RE-(re:) RE-do RE-think
APPROACH We develop architecture with an urbanism approach. Re-Edge has a responsibility to understand the effects of architecture and its environment based on keywords such as CREATION, URBANITY AND SUSTAINABILITY. Re-Edge stands for the creation of new edges by rethinking its norm and its new norm. Ultimately the space that we create is not only to offer the comfort of living inside and outside but also a shared space between architecture and its environment.

PRINCIPAL
Chansan is a registered architect, a member of Board of Architects Cambodia (BAC) and Cambodian Society of Architects (CSA). Chansan graduated with a Master in Architecture from Northeastern University Boston, Massachusetts and returned to Cambodia in 2009 after spending more than 15 years in Singapore and the United States. His first job in Cambodia is the Faculty Coordinator and lecturer of Architecture and Design at Limkokwing University of Technology Phnom Penh campus. Chansan is also a visiting professor at Pannasastra University School of Architecture and Design in which he shares and inspires about Design and Concept with his students. Chansan approaches his design process by seeking a storyline to be told to himself, his team of aspiring architects and his clients. He also views design constraint as an opportunity to explore an architectural intervention and as a mean to achieve an unexpected discovery in shaping the built environment. Since 2011, Chansan established Re-Edge as a continuation of his Master Degree Thesis project called “Re-Edging Retails where the architectural approach is a dialog between a building and its environment. Since then, Chansan has directed the design completion of many types and scales of numerous projects.

The Kingdom of Cambodia was once known as the Great Khmer Empire and now bordered by Thailand, Lao and Vietnam. Its current geographic location is the result of many era and periods of happiness, power, hardship and war. Cambodia is now a developing country, begins to flourish over time and blossoming to become the Pearl of Asia it once was. What makes Cambodia unique from its neighboring countries are its culture, its natural landscape, its people value in humanity and last but not least its largest fresh water lake in Southeast Asia, Tonle Sap Lake is a geographic depression which expands and contracts like the heart of Cambodia into the Tonle Sap River and the Mekong River that flows like the blood stream across the Tibetan Plateau, China’s Yunnan province, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Due to these unique characteristics of both the Mekong and the Tonle Sap River, our concept design is exploring life like the flow of water, up and down.
In order to remind that we are Khmer, we believe that it is not the cloth we are wearing or other accessories that we cover ourselves with, we are Khmer because of something inside all of us, it is our soul and we are unique. The river is the heart and soul of Cambodia, its formation and transformation is by the condition of its nature similar to the way we are born, we are born here so we are Khmer. The river is the source of our culture, our people’s daily activities and our history. The conceptual diagrams tell the story of the transformation of the curved wave into an architectural interpretation which forms the shape of the building. Thus the architecture becomes part of this unique nature that make Cambodia it is today. If the river creates landforms, architects create landmarks, drawing inspiration from its flow, its people, its culture and its history. In this case, designing a landmark building does not mean that the building is always the landmark; somehow, building is a transportation that carrying the landmark and the river itself is the landmark of the country.

Villa Town is a residential development project consists of 5 types of houses and a pool house. With 6HA of land, Re-Edge designed each houses with the consideration of comfort and style and the flexibility to rearrange the programs inside the space. Due to its marketability, the client requires a design that is modern and yet classic. Re-Edge is able to meet this requirement and incorporate contemporary design into some functions such as the shop house and the pool house. Re-Edge makes use of the urbanity of the shop house to design poetry of architectural language that faces the urban road. The pool house on the other hand has a relaxation approach and an urban resort feeling. It boosts an infinity swimming pool, shaded playground, information office, a cafĂŠ, a gym, a minimart and locker room.

A boutique hotel offers an intimate environment with luxurious amenities to its guests. Every thoughtful detail is considered into delivering a one-of-the-kind service and thus every square meter space inside and outside of the hotel. This initial layout and facade design options is to tackle contemporary building design in a sleek and thematic way, the way that a boutique hotel should be. A MOVEMENT theme answers to the urban that they are in such as views toward itself from the outside roads and views outward from the inside of itself. The concept is inspired by the movement of traffic surrounding the site and the other monumental places in the city that are related to the function of a hotel and hospitality business. The hotel houses programs such as: lobby cafĂŠ, conference room, office space and outdoor roof top bar, indoor bar and VIP lounge.

When we thought of ideas to re design the façade of the existing office for Cambodia beer we had to look no further than the brand logo and the brand identity for inspiration. We wanted the facade to embody the brand, the building to catch the eye; Convey and represent ‘Cambodia beer’ and it’s fresh, young and dynamic brand image. The main elements that we took from the brand identity were the company colour- RED, the Preah Vihear motif in the logo and the circular shape representing beer bubbles. Keeping these principals in mind we also wanted to ensure that the façade is easy to execute and cost effective

The site location at the prominent round about of TK was the beginning of our inspiration for the design of this office and retail space. The busy junction means the building needs to be eye catching as well as create a sense of calm and green oasis from the traffic. The circular round about also inspired us to think of a more sinuous and curved faรงade as a reaction to the location. This makes the building both dynamic as well as unique. 46

Wat Phnom is an urban heritage site located in the center of Phnom Penh adjacent to the Mekong and Tonle Sap River. The river that the city, the civilization and its economy. Due to its urbanization, Wat Phnom is a dot in the city that provide the local and visitors the much needed park and a break in the busy city. However, the neighborhood needs more than Wat Phnom to generate more interest and to accommodate the modern growth of its citizen. Re-Edge takes the initiative to search for the next urban life that combines heritage, culture, youth, economy and leisure. We propose the design concept for “Wat Phnom Water Front Village “on the riverbank adjacent to Wat Phnom. Wat Phnom River Front Village is a container village that consists of an elevated parking structure, lifestyle retail villages, Sisowat Quay Pub Street, open space, historical sculpture, park, boardwalk, elevated viewing deck, riverboat access, bus station and a co-working office. We believe this proposal can create a new identity for Wat Phnom, connect its people to the river, improve the economy of the neighborhood as well as a modern lifestyle village that revitalize the urban life and its people.

Shipping container architecture has been seen around the world as a new trend in architecture and design mostly because of its globally available. It has many advantages such as cost effective, eco-friendly, modular-ready for innovative concept and its strength and durability. However, using shipping container as a space, it needs to be considered for heat and sound insulation.

A container is a basic device creating a partially or fully enclosed space that can be used to contain, store, and transport objects or materials. In today’s world of trading, import and export, a container is a packaging tool for shipping goods across continents. Its main usage is storage with durable and rigid structure that can protect the goods inside it.

Firstly we have an industrial office design project, what come to our mind is limitation, budget, operational flow and confinement to the existing layout. Secondly, our design has to follow the branding and identity of the company’s history which are green and red of Chip Mong Group and Insee Concrete, we have to be very careful because we don’t want the design to feel like Christmas. Thirdly, our design decision is to focus on the entrance and the colors of the brand by keeping the rest of the form fairly simple.

Besides accommodating the various programs requirements the architecture and the interior design has to be ideal and on budget for the lifespan of the building. We separate the office into 2 wings, old and new and they are connected by the central lobby space that acts as a circulation zone. Re-Edge design the office building, management accommodation and team leader accommodation of the Winning Dragon Leather Ware factory. The master plan of these three buildings is designed in relation with the existing pond which plays an important role in the Chinese Feng Shui requirement. The main concept design of WDLW is sustainability by carefully understanding the solar orientation and wind movement across the site. The three buildings are equipped with shading devices, internal courtyards, abundant of green spaces, cross-ventilation systems as well as solar panel for hot water heaters. WDLW buildings are standing in modern structure and window design with minimal traditional Khmer roofs that hovering above and extending beyond the walls that also acts as walkway canopies and weather protection. Apart from the building designs, the landscape and water features create an atmosphere of no other factory accommodation had done before. These features create relaxation areas such as outdoor seating, public gathering and sport yard.

Our concept talks about: Symbiosis - Life begins from sharing. Symbiosis is the connection of the individual self, but they rely on each other to live (Heinrich Anton De Bary - German Professor). The first thing i want to say that I really respect the freedom and independence of the life of American. However, in our design, we want to begin a life by connecting and sharing.
76
SYMBIOSIS - a symbiosis design, a symbiotic life. It’s more intimate than the neighborhood, the brotherhood or relative relationship could be. It is likely considered as the life of a twin fetus, where each is influenced by the other. I did not force them to live in my way but the architecture will play as a director of their lives. “AND IT SHOULD BE A SENSE FOR HUMAN TO KEEP THE VALUE THAT THEY SHARED”

This project is located right next to the architectural masterpiece, Central Market, of art deco style yet its multiple functions such as the jewelry showroom; office and living space are compacted into a shop house layout. The many challenges for Re-Edge are to make a shop house not looking like a shop house, accommodate the modern classic requirement from the client as well as to seek some connection with the central market such as views and curve. Inspired by the Art Nouveau & Art Deco style that was formed within the beauty of vibrant colors, geometric patterns and elegant curve, we aim to reignite this design style in a touch of Khmer culture by using related motifs. What’s more, the incorporation of classical design principle such symmetrical curves and the contrast of material that are well and elegantly arranged in order to ensure the design that is filled with touches of details.

Located in the heart of Phnom Penh City, Toul Kork Residence sits on a quiet street nested in between traditional villa and new development area that used to be Boeung Kak Lake. The land is divided into two, a residential building and an office building that houses a new and up-coming architecture and design office. The architecture is inspired by the environmental factors of the site, the views, vernacular Khmer architecture and the New Khmer Architecture style in the 1960s period. The goal of the house is not just a home; it’s a journey and a place for inspiring the future of Cambodian and architecture in Cambodia. The raised ground floor reflects the traditional Khmer house; the internal courtyard offers communal space, views and a break away from the solid building of the typical villas surrounding it. The loop connects all floors together by creating a visual dynamic to the space. The exterior façade showcases deep shadow lines and a rhythm of vegetable columns that answers to the style of the new Khmer architecture and at the same time speaks contemporary green architecture. Lastly, the barrel vault shape roof acts as a beacon that mimics the iconic Islamic mosque that situated in Boeung Kak lake area and boosts a very special sleeping space in the inside.

A contemporary home goes beyond the simple boundary of four walls. The indoor and outdoor living environments are designed to be part of a bigger living space; space that becomes an organic part of our spirit and which influences the way we live. Our design concept opens up the house and connects it with its surroundings. Intrinsic to this idea is the central courtyard which pulls together the internal and external elements into once complete space. The OPEN HOUSE takes in the landscape and pushes out the living functions using different design strategies such as: creating high ceiling volume, introducing continuity of materials and focusing on the views and vegetation. The OPEN HOUSE will create unique interior spaces for feature lighting, modern classic furniture and contemporary artwork.

Today’s HOME is no longer defined by its four walls. The adjacency of exterior and interior spaces describe the organic part of live which influence the way live. Our design concept is to blur the boundary between the outdoor and indoor space by pulling in the outdoor and pushing out the indoor space. We would like to call our concept for today’s HOME a LANDSCAPE HOME. A LANDSCAPE HOME living is the idea of garden living with greenery and landform that become parts of the views, outdoor terraces, ways of bringing in natural light and breeze, and creating a buffer zone between living spaces and the outdoor nuisance such as the moving vehicles. These part of a LANDASCAPE HOME are the components for each house.

Telling an Architectural Story
The explo inter a few betw this l tricit
HUN CHANSAN.PRINCIPAL
Architects are known to creating building and spaces inside it. Provide a story behind the design concept is an opportunity to explore constraints and tactics for an architectural intervention. Examples of constraints are the restriction of the site and operational requirements as an unavoidable limitation, whereas, the site movement, environmental factors, local context and economical mean of space can be viewed as catalyst for an opportunistic architecture. Directing an architectural story can arrive into an unexpected discovery of the architect’s role in shaping the built environment. In order to engage with the unavoidable constraint we look at it as a series of diagrams that set up the introduction to the overall story. Before the introduction ends we offer scenario through a series of speculative diagrams. These speculations will provide solutions to the constraints by offering various tactics to the design. In Cambodia, we look at constraints as site boundary walls, ratio of built versus un-built area, building heights and number of parking and so on. Other constraints would be the operational boundaries that define the functions, sizes and requirements of each space inside the building. Speculations suggest opportunities for design and enhancing the users ‘experience by looking at the environment surrounding it such as traffic movement, sun movement, views, natural light, natural ventilation and efficiency of the space and what would make it distinctively memorable.

The series of diagrams tell stories of various projects that explore constraints and generates tactics for an architectural intervention. Often time one tactic in design gesture can solve a few constraints. For instance, by adding a courtyard in between buildings can get more natural light into the space, this light can be indirectly entered and reduce the use of electricity yet transforming the interior spaces as well.

This courtyard offers internal views that external might be limited to due to its neighbor and at the same time encouraging natural ventilation that happens only through design intervention. This move also transforms the architectural form as opportunities to intermix between built form and nature might result in cantilevered structure, big balcony and internal voids. At another instance, in order to maximize daylight into deep spaces such as an underground passage, garage room, or basement spaces can involve in the exchange of dialog between structure, level changes, materials, forms and faรงade of the architecture. For example, the use of glass will allow natural light to seeps into deep spaces but the set back and the large overhang control the amount of light and heat that might be conducted into the building. The obligation to provide a spatially efficiency plan means that the focus of design prioritizes on maximizing the economical and contextual symbol of the site. In this case, the most important programmatic requirements of the plan is shifted towards the most marketable location, the corner end of the block or the end where views are maximized and its formal expression is vital. By treating this corner differently from its adjacent spaces, a new volume is created thus intensify the architectural opportunity into exploring other means of design such as materials, light, and color.

While telling a story through architectural moments in a space, a site and an environment is a critical matter in dissecting the constraints and arriving at a design invention, in a bigger moment for an opportunistic architecture we can look at constraints at a bigger impact on society such as global warming, rising urban population, infrastructure, rapid development and urban pattern etc. In this case, speculations, tactics and opportunities have to tell stories of a built environment that has impact on the society at large. The Alley Bar takes its name from its location. While the alley itself is often associated with rustic and industrial quality, the design concept of the bar marries both the themes of urban chic and industrial retro. The curviness of the entrance, the main bar and the back shelving display sum up the chic-ness of the bar with the used of wood veneer and polished plastering surface. The main bar curves and folds from the front leading towards the back of the space, revealing the other parts of bar with urban dining and cocktail seating area. A house by definition is a shelter built to house people from its harsh environment that it is in. A house usually has four walls with clearly defined functional spaces such as entrance foyer, car porch, living room, dining room, kitchen and bedroom etc... and outside the house there are the outdoor spaces with some landscape design. The indoor and outdoor spaces are clearly separated by plastered walls with tradi- tional or European molding details and punched-in grilled frame windows and doors. This boundary shares so little or has no sense of transitional space between what is inside and outside of the house. “Pushing the Boundary of Today’s Home” tells the story of how today’s home is no longer defined by its four walls and the adjacency of its exterior and interior spaces that defines the organic part of life which influence the way we live. In all of our residential projects, we make it an urgent look into how transitional spaces, green spaces and func- tional relationship of space are working together to enhance the activi- ties of the home owner. Transitional space is a threshold that reflects the position at the border, it can be a small landing before entering a house, a deck that connects the inside and the outside, or a balcony that allows the space to flow from inside to outside and vice versa. The principle design concept is to make material continuously flow in and out, allowing its texture, color and pattern to go through these transitional spaces. Green spaces and outdoor views are most desirable in our today’s houses, interior space layout must be carefully planned to maximize the view towards it as well as controlling the movement around it. Thus, the architecture of the house takes shape and its materialization from choosing the right materials and locations for the views. The interior spaces of all levels can be designed around an internal courtyard making it the focal point in the house or it can be positioned to face the owner of the house when he/she opens the main door which is also making this green space to be the main view of the living space inside. The functional programs of the exterior spaces can be purposely designed to offer the overflow of activity from inside to outside of the house. In this case, the dining room with open kitchen is an ideal space for a family to interact while the outdoor deck can also be easily acces- sible by opening the sliding doors. These two functions are now connected and they can accommodate more people and transform its functions from semi-private to a public space. Sometimes vertical spaces can offer more than just a grand interior it can also allow spaces to be related to one another in a different level and at the same time allowing natural light to indirectly illuminating most part of the interior. While the double-height living room cans have ample of natu- ral light, grand interior it can also offer the glimpse of outdoor space beyond their sitting level. Pushing the Boundary of Today’s Home is a concept design to connect the interior and exterior of the house together through layout design, selection of materials, scale of activities, positions of views and the way natural light is ideally controlled inside the house. ¬

Mito Hotel Lobby Renovation
153
A new interior is needed for Mito Hotel as part of its rebranding effort into the boutique hotel market. As a design hotel, the idea of the old and the new, rustic but elegant at the same time are used to contemporize this new lobby space. The challenge is the existing old structure and its low ceiling. The design process includes creating new spaces such as additional office, a server room and a small meeting room with the goal of achieving flexibility of these functions. The ornate tile is rustic yet elegant and soft, the world map is made of metal mesh to create the focus of the lobby and the softness of collage artworks of Phnom Penh gives a glimpse of glorious architecture of the city to the hotel guests.
