“I am proud and excited to deliver to you an innovative and comprehensive educational program”

“It is the final year of the Triennium, so this is the perfect chance to earn your last points for the year”

Dear General Practitioner,

Dear Delegate,

On behalf of Reed Medical Education, it gives me great pleasure inviting you to join us at the Melbourne General Practitioner Conference & Exhibition (GPCE) from Friday 15 November – Sunday 17 November 2013. The Melbourne GPCE will run in conjunction with the Practice Nurse Clinical Education (PNCE) conference.

On behalf of the GPCE Scientific Programme Team and Steering Committee it gives me great pleasure to invite you to participate in the GPCE Melbourne 2013.

The General Practitioner Conference & Exhibition is widely recognised as Australia’s premier primary healthcare event. The Melbourne scientific program offers a wide choice of topics including seminars and hands-on workshops allowing delegates to obtain category 1 and 2 QI&CPD points. In addition, the exhibition floor offers delegates the opportunity to interact with suppliers and pharmaceutical companies to see the latest medical products and technologies on offer, along with a number of interactive exhibition floor features. The GPCE provides delegates with valuable face-to-face learning opportunities with fellow GPs assisting you in obtaining education and accreditation. Please remember that this is the final year of the GP Triennium, so this is the perfect chance to earn your last points for the year, in addition to networking with Australia’s leading healthcare educators and suppliers. There are a number of special events available for delegates to attend, including the ALM dinner on Diabetes Management occurring Thursday 14 November before the GPCE. There will also be an invaluable networking drinks reception bringing together sponsors, educators, exhibitors and delegates, which I encourage you to attend. Demand for places at the 2013 Melbourne GPCE is high, so I urge you to register at your earliest possible convenience in order to attend the sessions of your choice. I look forward to welcoming you to the 2013 edition of the Melbourne GPCE.

Reed Medical Education is proud to present to you this year’s GPCE, a primary care conference and exhibition of unparalleled quality. As the Scientific Program Producer, I am particularly proud and excited to deliver to you an innovative and comprehensive educational program, designed with the needs of primary health practitioners in mind and addressing the latest developments in evidence based medicine relevant to general practice. This year we are presenting 16 innovative Active Learning Modules, including an evening ALM – Mastering Diabetes, where we will explore the latest developments in Type 2 Diabetes as a part of a continuing interactive panel discussion program. We have included in our program many dynamic topics including Mental Health, Sports and Orthopaedic Medicine, a dedicated Surgical/Practical stream, a 7 hour Emergency Management module, Ambulatory Gynaecology and a Skin Cancer ALM, providing you with significant choice of sessions and subjects with which to expand your knowledge and improve patient outcomes. The Melbourne GPCE will again run alongside the PNCE (Practice Nurse Clinical Education) conference thus expanding our exhibition floor to welcome all primary health practitioners. We also provide dedicated CPD education for practice managers at the GPCE event. To this end I would encourage you to call upon your practice as a whole to attend this unique educational experience. I wish you an enjoyable and rewarding experience and I look forward to meeting many of you during GPCE Melbourne 2013. Kind regards,

This session will introduce diabetes research currently being undertaken in the general practice setting. Dr Jo-Anne Manski-Nankervis, Prof Greg Johnson & Prof Merlin Thomas IPN

S7A Window of Opportunity – Associations between Diabetes and Men’s Reproductive Health Strong associations exist between diabetes mellitus and male reproductive health disorders, including erectile dysfunction and androgen deficiency, and treatments for advanced prostate cancer may increase the risk of men developing diabetes. This presentation will focus on a comprehensive clinical approach to the inter-relationships between a man’s reproductive and metabolic health. Dr Carolyn Allan Andrology Australia

S2B Integrative Cardiac Wellness at a Public Hospital – Complementary Medicine for the Heart Research undertaken in Australia has shown that cardiac surgery patients use complementary medicines and the majority are interested in hospitals providing complementary therapy services. Research has also shown that some complementary medicines and therapies can provide substantial benefits to people with cardiovascular disease, including those requiring surgery. This lecture will discuss the integration of complementary therapies within hospitals from an international perspective and then focus on the development of the Alfred Hospital Integrative Cardiac Wellness program, an Australian first, together with research findings from The Alfred. There will also be a mini-review of those CM treatments which can provide benefits for people with cardiovascular disease. Dr Lesley Braun BioCeuticals

S3A

Keeping Older People on their Feet – The Role of Nutrition This session will provide an overview of the role of nutrition in helping older people to maintain their health and independence. It will explore the impact of ageing on nutrition and why undernutrition may pose a more significant health risk than obesity for older people. The session will include some simple strategies for improving the nutritional status of an older population. Ms Jane Winter Nestle Health Science

S8A Preventing Weight Regain – Successful Weight Maintenance Strategies This seminar considers ways to prevent weight regain and suggests successful weight maintenance strategies. Firstly the issues and challenges with longterm weight management are considered, then identified behaviours of successful weight loss maintenance and finally how to prevent weight regain: successful weight maintenance strategies. The session will allow participants to gain an insight on how VLCD/ VLED’s can be used to maintain weight after reaching a weight loss goal via a number of case studies. Ms Michele Pink Nestle Health Science

The Benefits and Risks with ICS in COPD The benefits of inhaled corticosteroids in COPD range from improvement in symptoms, lung function, quality of life to reductions in exacerbations. The risks range from oral candidiasis, hoarse voice, skin bruising to an increased risk of pneumonia. Latest evidence will be presented. AstraZeneca

S4A Surgical Advancements in Hip and Knee Replacements for Better Patient Outcomes including Anterior Minimally Invasive Surgery Total Hip & knee Arthroplasty procedures are some of the most successful operations of the 21st century. In total knee arthroplasty ‘Patient Specific Approaches’ have been recently introduced as part of the surgical process. Preoperative imaging is used to manufacture bone cutting blocks specific to a patient’s anatomy. Proposed benefits of patient matched-technology include a decrease in operation time, instrument trays required and the ability to pre-operatively plan a patients implant size, position and alignment more precisely. The ‘Anterior Approach’ for Total Hip Arthroplasty utilises an intermuscular and internervous plane which respects the patient’s anatomy and vital structures. No muscles are cut resulting in a faster recovery with no post-operative restrictions. Medacta Australia

S5A 14 Essential Steps to Diagnosis and Management of Dementia As the patient population ages and as presentations of memory loss become more common, there is greater pressure on GPs to differentiate early dementia from benign age-associated memory loss. This presentation provides practical steps on how to diagnose, counsel and help patients with cognitive decline and how to assist their families in the process. Presented on behalf of Alzheimer’s Australia through an NQDCI funding grant

Child Supplements – Sorting Facts from Fiction Child Supplementation is a therapeutic area which is growing in importance, and is one where General Practitioners must have up to date knowledge to guide patients. The children’s range of products has exploded over the last few years, with ingredients ranging from Fish Oil to Vitamin C all attracting special formulas. This session will address what is most important when recommending supplements for children, including recommended dietary intakes, absorption and degradation of ingredients and common mistakes one makes in selecting the right supplement. Melanie McGrice Aspen Pharma

S9A GPs Role in Managing and Improving Bone Health in Australia – Strategies for Reducing Fracture Rates and Latest Updates on Calcium and Vitamin D Osteoporosis affects over 1 million Australians and GPs are ideally placed to combat rising fracture rates and manage patient bone health. This seminar will review classifying patients most at risk of osteoporosis, optimal calcium and vitamin D (the facts without the myths), existing treatments and new horizons, current issues with secondary fracture prevention. Also, what to do about patients with low bone density? Prof Peter Ebeling Presented by Osteoporosis Australia and supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Amgen, Merck Sharp & Dohme and Remedy Healthcare

S9B Prevention of Dementia and Cognitive Impairment – has the jury reached a verdict? In 2011 there was an estimated 298,000 people living with dementia in Australia. The scale of cognitive decline will dwarf almost all other social issues facing Australia by 2050. This seminar discusses current evidence for the prevention of dementia and cognitive decline as well as treatment of symptoms associated with these conditions. Blackmores

GPCE Seminar SYNOPSES S10A The GP’s Recipe for Concussion Management – Quick and Easy Concussion in sport is a serious public health issue. 2 /3 athletes in a contact / collision sports team have concussion in a season, 90% of these occur in matches. If athletes choose to play sport, ignoring concussion symptoms, there is a risk of them dying suddenly on the field or having long term problems at work or school. In a study investigating community rugby players with concussion in Sydney, 78% did not receive return to play advice after concussion. All those who received the correct advice failed to comply (Hollis BJSM 2011). GP’s have a duty of care to manage athletes with concussion according to the new Zurich Concussion Guidelines. The transfer of concussion information to the under resourced sports community requires energy and dedicated commitment by GP’s & private sector initiatives. Attend this seminar to be confident in any concussion situation by understanding: the minimum diagnostic criteria for concussion; what to do with suspected concussion; sideline & office concussion assessment tools; rehabilitation approaches; concussion risk reduction and effective information transfer. Dr Ryan Kohler Presented by Herron Sports Concussion Australasia and supported by Aspen Pharma Pty Ltd

S12A Osteoarthritis of the Hip – Surgical Treatment Options for Better Patient Outcomes including Anterior Minimally Invasive Surgery Total Hip Arthroplasty is one of the most successful operations of the 21st century. Traditionally a total hip replacement would be performed through either a posterior or anterolateral approach. These approaches require the splitting of muscles which are essential for hip stabilisation. The Anterior Approach for Total Hip Arthroplasty utilises an intermuscular and internervous plane which respects the patient’s anatomy and vital structures. No muscles are cut resulting in a faster recovery with no post operative restrictions. Medacta Australia

S13A Demystifying the Differences between Antiplatelets and Anticoagulants amongst a Changing Landscape This seminar will provide guidance on: • the differences between antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapies (mechanism of actions and indications approved for use) • revisit current therapies as well as emerging therapies • the clinical application of these therapies with respect to each other and those in the same class • strategies for key management issues and considerations AstraZeneca

S10B The Evolving Role of Adipose Derived Stem Cell Therapy in Musculoskeletal Medicine Worldwide medical research continues to investigate the therapeutic potential of stem cells in cellular repair and tissue regeneration. Translation of adipose derived stem cell (ADMSC) research into the clinical setting has already occurred in Australia. With over 2 years of clinical experience treating musculoskeletal conditions such as osteoarthiris and tendinopathy, we discuss the treatment void ADMSC therapy is filling, including safety and efficacy in symptom reduction, disease regression and tissue regeneration. Regeneus

S11A Using the Kidneys to Manage Hyperglycaemia – An Introduction to the SGLT2 Inhibitors This session aims to educate clinicians about a new class of type 2 diabetes therapy which has been shown to be as effective as SUL and MET at lowering HbA1c but with a low risk of hypoglycaemia and the additional benefit of weight loss. Amongst other things, GPs will learn about the common and uncommon adverse event profile of the SGLT2 inhibitors, the correct patient in whom to prescribe this new class as well as the appropriate monitoring and follow up that is required. Clinicians who attend this session will be well positioned to prescribe this new class of T2DM therapy responsibly. Bristol-Myers Squibb & AstraZeneca – Working Together in Diabetes

S11B Is this a New Era in the Treatment of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

S13B Early Childhood Health and Development – The Role of Nutrition Good nutrition is the cornerstone for children’s health and development. This presentation covers how the behaviour and development of children from toddler to school age impacts on their diet. The role of nutrition in managing the common health concerns and challenges seen in children in this age group will be discussed. Kristin Mellett Nestle Health Science

Management of Medical Emergencies in the General Practice “Good emergency medicine is 10% clinical skill and 90% good logistics” Successful management of an unexpected medical emergency in your practice demands a quick and well co-ordinated response by the practitioner and the whole support team. To obtain the best outcome requires a range of skills, knowledge, equipment and a system that everyone understands. This professional training course not only provides clinical skills and knowledge but provides the systems and processes needed for the practice team to provide a high level of care to the stricken patient. This course outlines the science underpinning current resuscitation practices before being introduced to the risk assessment approach which underpins the treatment algorithms that have been developed to manage the emergency. Based upon these algorithms, simple and easy to use equipment to enable the practitioner and the team to manage airway, breathing and circulation will be identified. Techniques taught include team CPR, defibrillation, the use of laryngeal mask airways, monitoring of SpO2 and CO2, use of first line medications and packaging of the trauma victim. Participants will be broken into groups where our paramedics will step them through the equipment and protocols giving consolidation of skills and techniques required to manage a serious medical emergency to the highest possible level. Practical scenarios will bring the logistics and processes of managing a serious medical emergency to life.
