“Never use the word “cheap”. Today everybody can look chic in inexpensive clothes (the rich buy them too). There is good clothing design on every level today. You can be the chicest thing in the world in a T-shirt and jeans - it’s up to you.” - Karl Lagerfeld

Annabel Lowe is a Fashion Design student from Cardiff University. She lets us in on her top tips to grab the latest trends while being kind on our pockets...
Being a student is a tricky thing, your mind is open to the wonders of fashion more than ever before. Here however, lies the problem; we all want to update our wardrobes as we find our signature style but we don’t always have the funds! This article is full of tips and tricks to help you all live out your fashion dreams without breaking the bank.
Student Discount This is the most obvious and easiest way to get money off your purchases. It can feel a little embarrassing to ask sometimes but every little helps. There are loads of big brands that honour student discount such as Topshop and New Look, so don’t be shy and always ask the question!
Charity Shops I will admit that charity shops are not my thing. However, if you find yourself in a ‘posh’ area and spy yourself a charity shop I urge you to enter. I have seen many designer bargains in various Oxfam’s around the country and you may just snap up something really special! Oh, and of course it’s all for a good cause.
Sales Sale shopping is extremely hit and miss but here’s something you might not know; store sales have certain ‘drop’ points. It is very easy to get caught up in the mentality of ‘OMG Urban Outfitters sale has just started! Let’s go buy EVERYTHING’. Do yourselves a favour and wait. When sales start they put a few items in at the first ‘drop point’. This means that they only reduce them a little. Every 2 weeks or so there is another ‘drop point’ where more items are added and prices are reduced further. Sales generally do this 3 or 4 times before the items reach the lowest price and stay there, this is where the real gems can be found! (don’t forget Topshop do student discount on sale prices too!)
Staff Discount If you’re willing to work for it, staff discount is probably the best way to save your pennies. If you’re course allows time for a part-time job and you manage to get one at your favourite store then you will be student savvy royalty. Most high street clothing stores offer their staff members around 25% off the retail and sale prices. This amounts to a huge saving over the course of a year. Not to mention, having a job will allow you to buy more in the first place!
The Internet If you are looking for something specific, don’t rule out places such as eBay and Amazon. There are some real bargains to be had if you’re willing to wait for (usually free) delivery. I know buying online can be a bit daunting and the terror of returns can put you off but trust me on this, you might be surprised. Also, online stores such as ASOS have the most incredible stock and also have YEAR ROUND sales! Not to mention they honour student discount with Unidays/NUS and they offer free delivery. That’s a student savvy hat trick right there!
I hope this article has given you a few ideas and sets you on your way to being professional bargain hunters.

“I’ve always been a fan of dark grunge/elegance but I think that influence has come from being a 90’s child and that usually, comfort is the main priority rather than aesthetics. It’s relatively easy to throw things together when you have the foundations of the same sort of colour tones in your wardrobe.” “I never pay over the odds for high street clothing and always wait for a sale, I’d rather spend a lot of money on an item that has been pre-owned and stood the test of time. I want to buy into a piece of history that has bags of character, not something that is massively expensive brand new, that will go out of style within the next season.”

Wishing you could add some new style to your wardrobe but don’t have the money... Then why not try a clothes swap? Take an item of clothing you don’t want anymore and swap it for a new one! Look out for events at your local community hall, university or even put one together with your friends. It is an exciting night out with music and a nice glass of wine alongside. While you’re having fun grabbing new clothes, you are also helping the environment by recycling. Photography by Elena Haydon

18
Sue is a textiles artist and educator. She is very passionate about recycling clothing. Here we speak to her about the reasons why she loves taking part in clothes swaps and wants to encourage more people to try it...
Why would you promote a Clothes Swapping event? “The volume of textiles within landfill is going up. So, how do we stop the cycle of resource hungry consumption and disposal. One small tactic is the clothes swap. You can still have the thrill of new-toyou clothing, with the additional fun of having to battle for things, to hunt for them, and you get rid of the clothes you’re bored of in a good way.”
Do you believe it is becoming more popular now to wear second hand clothes? “The recent trend for ‘vintage’ rehabilitates old clothes into something desirable with a sense of uniqueness and history just the sort of things missing from the massmarket ubiquity of fast fashion. This trend is championed by certain actresses and models who are seen as ‘style icons’, and so become something to be copied. And of course, there’s also an element of green-consumerism in deliberately choosing second-hand over buying new, for many people. Fast fashion tries to conceal the facts of its production, but it is hard not to wonder how clothes can be produced so very cheaply, and many people are deeply uncomfortable with the environmental and human costs of these clothes.”
What do you love about these events? “When I watch people clothes shopping they rarely look happy, it looks such a chore, and yet clothing is an expression of our social identity. Clothes swaps are huge fun! People enjoy it, and there’s the thrill of the hunt and competition for ‘the good stuff’, and a bit of being silly and trying things you might not normally try. It’s social and you never know who will come or what they’ll bring, so there’s always that excitement. And it might get someone who doesn’t normally wear second-hand trying something new.”

Statement jewelery and nail colours are a key trend for 2014. It can spruce up your whole look and make your outfit look a lot more expensive than it is. Who says you need lots of money to make a statement? Statement jewelery may look expensive however there are a lot of bargains out there on the high street. Although statement jewellery and make-up may be daunting, it is fun to experiment and find out the key colour this year for eyeliner and nail varnish. Using mainly darker colours such as, black and khaki green mixed with lighter colours and accessories to create a new ‘pretty’ vibe. Red can really bright an outfit up even if its just some red lipstick. We are loving the Fedora Hats. Mixing their classic style with the punk trend is perfect for the ‘Pretty Punk’ look.
Punk trends are very popular this season. We all know leather is expensive but there is no reason not to fake it, especially with the great quality faux leather jackets on the high street!

Be dazzling on your night out by wearing a mixture of glam and casual. It is sometimes hard to know what to wear on a night out. You don’t want to look too over the top yet you still want to dress up and make an effort. The simple solution is to mix styles to create a new one!
Embellished Top - Vintage Stall - £5 Jeans - Primark - £10
Embellished tops are always a must for the evening. Sequins and beads will shimmer and catch the light making you stand out from the crowd. Too much sparkle may sometimes look slightly over the top if you are just going for a meal, or a drink with the girls. To tone it down pair with some skinny jeans and boots to give it that grundge edge. Alternatively for that ultimate dazzle, add as much sparkle as you wish, it’s up to you!

Bronzed Beauty A fail safe option for any occasion and any eye colour. For this look, I used Zoeva nude palette (£14). I have created a subtle smokey eye with this look using a darker brown blended into the crease and outer corner along with a dark matte brown eyeshadow across the lash line as a soft alternative to liquid eyeliner. To continue this subtle bronzed look, Charlotte’s skin is flawless with a soft glow from Sleek’s highlighter (£6.99) and the look is finished with Rimmel’s Apocalips lip lacquer in ‘Luna’ (£6.49).

Be Bold As with all three of these make up looks, we start with a flawless base on Charlotte, achieved through careful application of her chosen foundation and Rimmel’s Stay Matte Powder (3.49). The bold eye look was created using Maybelline’s Master Drama Chromatic Kohl Liner in ‘Turquoise Vibe’ (£4.49). A slick of black eyeliner completes the look, here I have used Seventeen’s High Drama Liquid Eyeliner (£3.99). To give the look even more drama we used a Babyliss boutique deep waver on her hair for volume and texture.
Maybelline Master Drama Chromatic Kohl Liner - £4.49
Rimmel Stay Matte Powder - £3.49

The final look combines two strong looks that can be used separately or combined for an intense look like we have here. Firstly we used Sleek’s Luminous pressed powder for her flawless skin. (£6.99) The purple tones we have used make Charlotte’s blue eyes stand out, with two MAC eyeshadows being used for the bulk of the look. I have blended MAC’s ‘Sketch’ and ‘Shadowy Lady’ (£12.50 each) through the crease, outer corner and the lower lash line to create a deep smokey eye. For a cheaper alternative we love the eye palette by Sleek (£6.99) The dark lip colour used here is Revlon’s Super Lustrous Lipstick in ‘Black Cherry’ (£7.49 which really pulls the whole vampy look together.

A good bag can give the illusion of an expensive outfit all round. It can spruce up your whole image while giving you the confidence to strut your stuff! Here we have picked out the top bags perfect for the office! Structured and neutral coloured bags will never go out of style. They are classics and go with most outfits. A top tip for getting your perfect bag is to head down to your nearest TK Maxx. Although they may not all be to your taste, there is often the best bargains to be found for over half the price of their usual price. You will find designers such as Michael Kors, Nine West, Edina Ronay, L.Credi and many more for under £30 The only reason they are cheaper is because they may be from last season. However a classic bag will never look outdated. Although Primark may not be many peoples first option, keep your eyes peeled for the one off bag which will look 5 times more expensive. This does happen! Structured bags are neat and chic and although great for work, they are also great for everyday use too. Try finding a similar shape while adding a dash of colour. This will jazz it up and add some fun to your outfit. A bag can be the number one accessory for most of your outfits. Pick wisely and make sure it matches with your coat in the winter months!

The 1960’s style will never go out of trend. The classic shapes and cut are both sophisticated and chic while perfect for any occasion. 60’s style clothing is available everywhere at the moment, old and new. Collars, shift dresses, shirts, along with big hair and sunglasses are a must for this sleek feminine style. eBay, charity and vintage shops are great places to buy statement pieces for this vintage look. There are many old 60’s items for cheap which you can then mix with newer high street clothing to modernize the look.

Bristol Fashion Week happens twice a year showcasing the latest and upcoming trends for both, Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer. This show was for the spring/Summer 2014 trends. The event goes on for five days and has a combination of 18 catwalk shows, pampering sessions and style advice inside The Mall at Cribbs Causeway. Tickets are reasonably priced starting at ÂŁ8.95 for standard tickets or you can spend a little extra to guarantee front row seats while the money raised goes towards the Bristol Breast Cancer Care Centre. The fashion show its self is presented by both the well known TV fashion stylist, Mark Heyes and celebrity hair stylist Andrew Barton, who definitely complete the show with their witty sense of humour.
92
Bristol Fashion Week is different from other fashion shows. It is more of a casual and fun event with models ranging from size 8 to plus sizes. You are able to enjoy free Marks & Spencer refreshments before watching the upbeat show, including dance routines and a free prize draw where you could win a luxury handbag. One lucky local also receives a makeover from Mark Heyes and get to strut down the catwalk embracing her new look.
93 The main trends picked out from this seasons show were, bright bold patterns and colours, bold paint strokes and bright tropical florals. Mix and matching different patterns and colour blocking was popular along with the 60’s style shift dresses. If you are not wanting to wear such bright colours, luckily we saw a lot of pastel colours down the catwalk. Lilac, mint green, sky blue and baby pinks are all must have colours for this season! If you are wondering what to do with your hair this summer, low ponytails were popular throughout the show. An easy casual and sophisticated look which will also get your hair out your face to catch that tan!
94
Bristol Fashion Week is all about real people and affordable style while having fun. The fashion items included are all from high street stores and although some clothes may be expensive, there will still be the more affordable shops included such as River Island and New look. This is a lively and enjoyable event in which you leave with new knowledge of the latest trends. It also gives you the perfect excuse to go shopping with your friends after and grab those new styles you’ve been lusting over!

After we attended both Bristol and London Fashion week it was clear that bright colours, bold patterns and animal print was going to be the top trend this Spring/ Summer 2014. Either if you all out from head to toe or add just hint, this style will suit most people. To help you out we decided to search the high street and find the best deals out there! We found that George at ASDA and Primark had a great selection all for £15 or under! Although ASDA may not sound like the most glamorous place to get your clothes, it is surprising what you can find there. Jackets for £12 which you may mistake for being from Topshop. I won’t tell if you don’t!

Be daring with bold clashing colours this spring/ summer 2014. Colour popping is a great way to express your personality and is an excuse to wear your favourite colours together. The best way to achieve this look is to use plain block colours as patterns will look too busy and mismatched. Most importantly have fun with it!

Wanting to spruce up your nails for the summer? We hear from nail art lover Sarah Gazzard about her secrets on achieving the best manicure while on a budget.
Okay, so I'll admit it. I have a problem - I'm obsessed with painting my nails. There, I've said it. For some girls it's shoes, others it's handbags - but for me it's nail polish. I always have painted nails - if I don't, I am either ill or majorly busy. It seems from the minute I sit down patiently to wait for them to dry I want something new! But how do you fund such habit on such a tight budget? Here are a few of my top tips:
Invest In A Decent Base Coat - I know it's boring, and spending money on a layer that no one will see is not exactly my idea of an exciting purchase but trust me it will save your nails in the long run and get the best wear out of your polish. A good base coat can make a 99p polish look like one of the best in the store.
Seek Out The Best Bargains - I could say over and over that the cheap nail polishes are great but let's face it we all know that the majority of the time you get what you pay for (quite often I find the cheaper brand polish look great but there is rarely a huge colour selection - I mean you can only buy so many nudes or pale pinks!) But wait, what if you could get your favourite, branded polishes at a fraction of the cost. Make use of 3 for 2 or buy one get one frees in your local drugstore or head to your nearest TK Maxx to pick up a bargain. They are one of my favourite places to shop as although you might have to fight your way through, sometimes feeling like you're at a jumble sale but you always come out finding a bargain. Be sure to pop in at end of season as stores send them their extras that haven't made it into your collection yet!
Buy A Gel Top Coat - I love these high shine, gel manicures that are bang on trend at the moment but re-buying all my favourite polishes in the high shine format seems such a waste. So recently I purchased the Maybelline Forever Strong Super Stay 7 Days Gel Nail Colour in Crystal Clear. Use it on top of your existing polishes and voila you have an instant high shine mani for a fraction of the cost.
Be Wary Before You Buy Into The Latest Trends - I love to be on trend with my nails, and love to make my fingertips match the rest of the style that is out there but there is nothing worse than buying an expensive bottle of nail polish, then realising you hate the colour on your nails. Fluorescent green, sunshine yellow and electric blue are to name but a few of my faux pas. However, if you want to give them a go, or need a polish for one specific outfit, find a less expensive version, try not to overspend, then if you change your mind you've only lost a little.
So there we have it, a couple of my top tips to help keep to a budget and still fuel your habit, okay or maybe just my habit - I'm off for a manicure!

“I’ve committed myself to a year of not buying anything new to try and involve myself in a more sustainable way of creating a continually exciting wardrobe. I don’t shop in actual shops, I find my clothes from charity shops, vintage markets or eBay. You have to be creative, i’ve never been satisfied buying things off the mannequin anyway. I love clothes, fashion and dressing up and I don’t think I should have to compromise on this just because i’m going through a poor spot we also need to learn to recycle fashion more. I was really scared of colours until recently. Now I enjoy experimenting.”
Meet Sabrina Dallot-Seguro, who only shops in charity shops, vintage stalls or on eBay, yet still manages to wear designer clothes! How!? Well, if you have a good eye and are willing to search hard enough you can do this too! Here we speak to her about her opinion on affordable fashion and why she decides to wear only second hand clothes.
