Cathie Watson It sure doesn’t seem like it’s been a year since I last sat to write my fall issue letter, but as I sit in my office against a backdrop of pumpkin décor, it’s abundantly clear the long, warm days of summer have come to a close. We’ve had a blast putting this issue together for you! As you’ll read in our exceptionally talented editor’s letter, we are proud to support our community and its many efforts to make Kingston the best city to live, work and play. We are beyond thrilled to bring you an interview with David Bastedo, the former official photographer of our beloved The Tragically Hip. He speaks to his time on the road with “the boys” and how it translates to a huge event planned in support of Hospice Kingston. Also, I was fortunate to spend some time with a wonderful friend and leader of our downtown Kingston retail scene, Maria Cronk, owner of Fancy That and The Roundstone, for a new feature called Publisher’s Picks. I got to play a little “dress-up” in order to present all the fun items we pulled together guaranteed to keep you cozy this season. Our team has worked countless hours from our offices and homes, but also from coffee shops, restaurants, hockey rinks and wherever else we needed to in order to bring you this issue. I would be remiss if didn’t give a very special thank you to the wonderful team who work tirelessly to bring this magazine to life each issue. We truly have the best group of people working together with fierce passion to produce ReFINEd Kingston. Finally, thank you, Kingston for all of your support and encouragement. Local business is a vital pillar of our community and as an independent, locally-owned business, we are passionate about sharing the stories of other small businesses. Whether we are introducing you to, or reminding you about a great product, service or business, we thank you for engaging in the stories and supporting those who make the Limestone City such a great place to be. Katrina Geenevasen Every issue our little team assembles comes with its own set of joys and challenges; a lot can happen in just a few months. But from the initial planning stages to the day we send the magazine to press, every one of us remains as passionate about our publication as we were the day we set out to make this dream of ours come true. I think it’s that very passion that sets small businesses apart. There’s a drive — an energy — you don’t find anywhere else. Just recently, Canada celebrated Small Business Week. It was fitting, I feel, that it took place the week we were getting this book ready to send to press. Sometimes, we need a reminder that the (really, really!) late nights hovering over a computer screen are worth it. What else makes the job worth it? Well, for me, anyway, it’s getting the chance to meet people that under normal circumstances, I wouldn’t. As you can see from Stephen’s incredible cover photo, I recently got the chance to sit down with David Bastedo, who served as The Tragically Hip’s photographer for 12 years. While I only got a glimpse into what must have been a wild journey, I was beyond honoured to share a drink with David at a downtown Kingston bar and hear just a handful of tales from his time with The Hip.
Stephen Wild Well, here we are! Three years in, and we keep pushing the envelope and striving to give you better content. This issue is truly is a collector’s edition. Throughout the following pages, we celebrate the life and times of our favourite sons through the lens of David Bastedo. For 12 years, David travelled with The Tragically Hip near and far. Now, he has assembled a photographic narrative; a compelling and provocative behind-the-scenes peek. The event, coming up in December, will serve a poignant reminder that Kingston is in need of a hospice facility. Be sure to check out Katrina’s story to learn more about Through My Lens: A Tale of Love, Hope and Admiration. But we don’t stop there! This issue is packed with amazing stories of local businesses. Kingstonians love shopping and connecting with good people that work their hardest to make their lives life better. So cozy up with a hot chocolate (I like mine with a wee dram of Baileys), a blanket and settle in for a good afternoon read. Cheers, Stephen
To David, I say thank you. Thank you not only for the chance to meet but also for bringing your event to Kingstonians to support a cause that’s so dear to our hearts. It’s a privilege to share a byline with you. To our readers, I hope you all take the time to read our cover story (page 42) to learn more about David’s upcoming event, Through my Lens: A Tale of Love, Hope and Admiration, and how funds from the event will be donated to Hospice Kingston’s THE TIME IS NOW Campaign.

Our team will be there; we hope to see you at the event, too.

As a final note: the morning I sent the final version of the cover story to Cathie, she was at the hockey rink with her daughter. The moment she finished reading, “Ahead by a Century” began playing over the loudspeakers.

ead to any nearby mall or downtown boutique and you may feel a hint of déjà vu while perusing this season’s styles. Many iconic 1970’s trends have found their way back onto the runway, but in new and righteous combinations. Quintessential patterns, fabrics, and shapes from the era have undergone a modern revival. 12
ReFINEdKINGSTON
But the penchant for creative expression remains, so don’t be afraid to mix various genres and styles to convey your individuality. Whether you resonate with punk rock, hippie, or bohemian aesthetics, it’s the perfect time to celebrate this diverse decade with your personal style.
Off the Hook Patterns and Hues The ‘70s are synonymous with flamboyant flare, and this is evident in the colours and patterns you’ll spot this season. Bold animal prints, bright colours, and fall perennials can be seen
on both men’s and women’s clothing. Perhaps it’s something of an ode to the androgynous fashion of the time, so don’t be afraid to be a bit of a rebel and step out of your comfort zone. Animal prints will help you to channel your inner wild child and pair easily with denim of any kind, always a popular choice in the ‘70s. Depending on the occasion, a simple leopard print coat or sweater can be paired with a distressed or sleek jean and will keep you on trend without much effort. But if you’re not ready to let your inner wildcat loose, opt for a printed belt bag
instead. After all, hands-free comfort never goes out of style. Bright colours are an obvious choice for warmer months, but hold on to the summer season a little longer by wearing a bold hue in the fall too. Millennial pink was seen everywhere earlier this year, but its daring fuschia counterpart has arrived to brighten these dreary days. Blend the seasons with a striking sweater, and if pink makes you feel a tad too girly, choose a chunky knit that can pair well with a loose-fitting boyfriend jean. Floral patterns don’t have to wither away with warmer weather either, as fall perennials and motifs of nature are printed on both men’s
and womenswear this season. Declare to wear patterns with flowers and petals and bring a little life to your wardrobe by mixing florals with fall favourites such as sweaters and hats. Black is easy to pair, but you can also look for pieces in earthy autumnal orange or olive-green for a seamless transition into cooler months. Prairie and paisley wrap dresses in darker tones can be worn with tights, socks, or boots as the temperatures dip. Whether you add a highneck top underneath, or an unbuttoned long-sleeve blouse overtop, layers will also add longevity to a flowy frock.

allowing the materials to build upon one another, increasing in thickness from one to the next. This not only creates detail, it allows you to shed or add layers to suit those chilly mornings or sunny afternoon temperatures. Add a finishing touch with accessories, just as the hippies did, but instead make it a colourful toque, baseball hat, bag, sunglasses or gnarly sock. Options are endless as accessories are made of a multitude of fabrics from lace to velvet and come in numerous colours and prints. Celebrate your inner wild child and let the details make your look truly unreal.
A Slammin’ Silhouette Tailored silhouettes and relaxed shapes learned to coexist in peace and harmony in the 1970s and the same rings true today. Men’s pants haven’t reverted to the classic bell bottom form but are
Funk-it-out with Fabric and Texture As was true in the ‘70s, no outfit is complete without plenty of detail, so add multiple pieces to your outfit and accessorize until your heart’s content. Combining typical fall fabrics such as suede and leather is always fashionable in autumn, but this is your chance to get a little funky and layer on various textures. Velvet, teddy, corduroy, and fleece are not only 14

practical options on colder days, they can be mixed and matched to create an interesting overall look. Fleece and plaid are once again appropriate for both home and work life and shirts can be worn singularly or unbuttoned overtop of lighter fabrics. Add warmth with a jacket or sweater in heavy corduroy and teddy materials, which can be found on many outerwear pieces this season. Layer your look appropriately by
worn in slim fitting fashion for the modern Casanova. Shades of deep blue, green, and burgundy are instead used to remind us of their colourful polyester counterparts and are simple to pair with corresponding shirts featuring some element of the same hue. For women, the opposite rings true as coats are oversized and lush in their composition, making it easy to include lots of layers underneath. Flowy and sheer fabrics create a relaxed look reminiscent of easy-breezy bohemian style. Lighter materials are rad transition pieces as well, easily taking you from summer to fall. Combining rich fabrics with light textures is not only smart layering, it creates one nifty outfit. So, can you dig it? Whether you’d like to dive headfirst into the radical style of the ‘70s or sport modern interpretations, you’ll be lookin’ good as long as you’re expressing yourself. Mix and match colours, patterns, fabrics and, textures, create different shapes, and layer on multiple pieces and accessories. As long as you’re feelin’ groovy, you’ll be turning heads as you boogie down the street.

FALL FOR FRAMES By Allison Grange
When I was a little girl, it was my dream to wear glasses. I remember sitting in my bed, in the dark, attempting to strain my eyes so that I would need to go to the eye doctor and get fitted for the most beautiful frames. Yes, that was the logic of a sevenyear-old, but it made so much sense to me at the time. My dad wore glasses, some family members wore glasses, and a couple cool kids at school wore glasses. Could you blame me for wanting to look like them? 16
ReFINEdKINGSTON
Unfortunately (or fortunately), the nighttime eye-straining of my youth didn’t work. But, by the time I was about 18, I began to notice that my vision was not as sharp as it used to be. Soon, I was wearing my very own pair of simple, modest, bronze-rimmed glasses. And, I hated them. It wasn’t their fault; there was nothing wrong with the glasses themselves. What was wrong was that I became bored with them very quickly. I felt like they looked fine in casual situations, but didn’t
look good when I was wearing a dress or sportswear. They didn’t always match what I was wearing. They didn’t have much style. They were meek and bland and when I wore them I felt the same. So, after a year of wearing them infrequently, I put them in a drawer and decided that it wasn’t really that important to see details on trees or grass or sunsets or people’s faces. Luckily, since then, I’ve learned a thing or two and matured a little bit. Today, I’m the proud owner
of four pairs of frames – each carefully selected for specific parts of my life. Oh, and most importantly, I can see very well. It’s taken me a decade and a half of trying on, testing out, experimenting with, and learning about purchasing the right frames for my face, personality and lifestyle. As with clothing, just because a certain style or trend looks great on one person, doesn’t mean it will work well for everyone. Plus, I don’t know about you but I would get bored wearing the same sweater every day of my life. Why would it make sense to own only one pair of glasses? Now, the last thing I’m suggesting you do is go out and buy 20 pairs of frames. I am the first person to
recommend being intentional in all purchases to avoid expense and waste. But, sometimes it makes sense to have a classic, round wireless frame for casual use, and a pair of red, acetate retroinspired frames for funkier wear.
As with clothing, just because a certain style or trend looks great on one person, doesn’t mean it will work well for everyone. Are you a runner or gymgoer? Why not sport a sturdy metal frame that stands up to your activity level and looks the part too? A quick Instagram or Pinterest search for “eyeglasses” shows
current trends leaning towards a variety of clear, tortoiseshell, rose-gold, turquoise and multi-coloured frames. What’s so fun about fall 2018 is that it seems truly anything goes when it comes to glasses, as long as the frames work for your comfort and lifestyle. Why not visit your local optician and try on some frames today? Not only will you be able to see what works for you, but it will give you the chance to speak with a professional who can suggest frames for your specific needs. Be open and have fun trying on frames that you wouldn’t normally gravitate towards. You’ll never know unless you try. And who knows? Soon you may be seeing yourself in a whole new style.

“I believe that all women are pretty without makeup – but with the right makeup can be pretty powerful.” Bobbie Brown, Professional Makeup Artist
By Kimberley Falk | Photos Stephen Wild Models Debbie Fredricks, Jeanette Somogyi & Jane Weston Saunders Strength. Confidence. Beauty. “Strength” and “confidence” come before “beauty.” These are the three words that hook your attention when first visiting make-up artist Debbie Goulding’s website. Debbie’s passion is “to encourage strength, instil confidence and help women to discover their beauty that exists both inside and out.” Debbie’s love of makeup started from a very young age. “From as far back as I can remember, I was always into my mother’s makeup bag, jewellery box, perfume, creams and lotions, and let us not forget the high heels,” she says. “I guess I was born with the makeup gene!” She grew up reading fashion magazines. “It was from those articles and photos that I started experimenting with makeup,” she says. 18

Debbie is also focused on reaching the younger generation of tweens and teens. “I feel it is important to teach these young ladies how to care for their skin and apply makeup properly, preventing them from developing bad habits,” she says. “Having healthy, youthful skin is a blessing and my hope is to help them keep it that way.” The makeup and skincare line that Debbie uses is exclusive “I love all the festivals and events and have participated in many of them,” she says. “I find people are very engaging and show genuine interest in what I have to offer. One of the easiest and most effective ways of doing this is to use an overnight resurfacing peel. It is gentle, safe and chemical free and works while you sleep! Let’s talk makeup. With a new season upon us, the colours are changing – not just the leaves, but also our wardrobe and skin. Skin: Dewy skin with minimal makeup looks healthy and natural. You don’t need to cake on makeup for striking results. A moisturizing foundation with a little concealer and natural brown eyeliner will have you covered during the day. For an evening look, highlight the points of your face where the light hits. Just a touch on your Cupid’s bow, cheekbones, and brow arches gives your skin a naturally beautiful finish. Touch up your lashes with mascara and your ready for an evening out! Eyes: Monochromatic colour with matching lids and lips and voluminous lashes will warm up any
cool fall day. Two-tone eye shadow is a simple application. Pick two shadows and combine them by applying one hue all around your eye, and create a smoky eye effect on top with the other. Copper brings autumn tones to your eyes with orange-red hues around your lash line. With the brilliant colour of fall leaves comes sunsetinspired gradient on your lids. Silver smoky eyes with a gray gradient effect on lids, keeping darker shades on the outer corners and bringing it in with cooler tones is simple yet eye popping and stunning! A little goes a long way with halfway eyeliner. End your liner before the inner corner of your eye for a fresh, bright-eyed effect. Jewel tones such as blue and violet will ad a pop of colour. Make it less ‘80s by blending a thin line of black or slate to tone it down. Don’t forget your brows. Deepen the color of your arches to enhance their shape, and frame those beautiful peepers! Cheeks: Subtle blush is a year-round must, but this season’s trend is inspired by the rosy glow you get in the exact same color your cheeks turn when it’s chilly outside. So natural! Lips: Current and plum are the perfect shades for transitioning from a warm to cool season. My go-to is Beautycounter’s™ Lip Sheer or Colour Intense lipstick. CITY LIFE
The Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning By Susanna Gordon, Volunteer, Kingston Association of Museums, Art Galleries and Historic Sites Photos Provided by Kingston Area Museums I remember seeing the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning for the first time. I had recently moved to Kingston and was eager to learn about the city’s history and culture and to become involved in the local arts community. I was struck by its design – a compelling balance between contemporary architecture and the features from the original 19th Century heritage building. At the front entrance, visitors can literally turn the pages of a Kingston Remembers interpretive plaque and learn the site’s history, starting from when Thomas Dalton purchased the property 34

in 1819 and built a brewery to James Morton’s “Mammoth Brewery” which an article in The British Whig on March 1, 1844, claimed to be “the best finished establishment of the kind in British America and the United States.” The building has served other purposes, including as the Sydenham Military Hospital and the Eastern Ontario Area Headquarters of the Army. In 1971, the City of Kingston purchased the property under the recommendation of the Director of Recreation, John K. Tett, who envisioned the old brewery and distillery as a future arts and
cultural hub in Kingston. In 2015, The Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning officially opened its doors. The heart and soul of The Tett are the creative people in our community. They are the little girls in pink tutus who skip down the hallway from the Kingston School of Dance to peek into the Modern Fuel Artist Run Centre. They are the potters, weavers, and metalsmiths who share ideas while working on their own projects. They are the artists who paint and teach in the Creativity Studios and the aspiring musicians who sign out instruments from Joe’s M.I.L.L. before heading to the waterfront café. While the City of Kingston owns the building, it is the small group of dedicated staff and volunteer board members of the charitable Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning who operate the building to foster an inclusive, creative community, and rents the affordable spaces to artists and arts organizations. Art educators are encouraged to rent the Activity Room for their artmaking classes. The Tett Gallery can be rented for a weekend, a week, a month. And unlike commercial galleries, the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning does not take a commission from the sale of artwork. The Rehearsal Hall is ideal for theatrical performances and meetings, and the Malting Tower, where Morton’s kiln toasted the grain, is now a light-filled space for special events where guests can enjoy spectacular views of Lake Ontario. The Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning offers its own highquality, accessible art programming for children, families and adults.

School Involvement Beyond Report Card Keeps Parents Informed The back-to-school season has come and gone, tests have been written, and homework has been handed in. Just as students and parents settle into the school groove, report cards arrive. Parents don’t have to wait for the first report card to find out how their child is doing in school. In fact, report cards should be only one part of the cycle of parent involvement.
Brooke Lewis B.A. (Hons), B.Ed. (OCT) Centre Director 793 Blackburn Mews Kingston, ON K7P 2N6 kingston@oxfordlearning.com
Often, the reason report cards can be so stressful is that it is the first time parents get any sort of feedback on how their child is progressing. By relying solely on the report card for school information, parents might set themselves up for unpleasant surprises. Luckily there are plenty of ways that parents can get involved in their children’s education, and most of them are pretty simple.

The more involved a parent is, the less likely it is that they’ll get unpleasant surprises. Quick Tips to Get Involved in your Child’s Education 1. Take five minutes to say hello to the teacher and to ask how your child is doing in math/reading/ spelling/listening, etc. 2. Send a note to school with your child to schedule a phone chat with the teacher. Don’t wait for the teacher to call you to report bad news or slow classroom progress. 3. Follow up when a test is returned to your child. How did it go? Were the results what you were expecting?
4. Go online. The Internet is a wonderful tool to keep informed. If your child’s class has a web page, log on and get involved. 5. Get help. If there are any issues, you can seek help as soon as you learn of it rather than waiting to find out on the report card. 6. Remember to keep it in context. The first report card of the school year is like a check-up on how your child is adjusting to the new school year. 7. Look to the past. Last year’s school performance can be a big indicator of potential problems this year. Correct issues early and avoid repeats. Founded in 1984, Oxford Learning uses innovative approaches to learning that have helped thousands of students to reach their educational goals. Customized programs based on the science of cognitive development help children to develop the skills that they need to succeed in school while they develop the confidence that they need to succeed in life. FALLING FOR FALL TLTI Welcomes Cooler Weather, Expands Volunteer Base and Promotes Outdoor Recreation Submitted by the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands Photos Stephen Wild
Celebrate the Change of Seasons in TLTI As the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands (TLTI) welcomes the cooler weather of fall, it dares Old Man Winter to label this as “The Off Season!” Our communities thrive throughout the fall and winter with economic growth, service delivery and active programing. Our businesses are open and welcoming year-round. For example, 1000 Islands Helicopters will fly any season of the year. “Fall colour tours offer amazing sites, and great deals,” explains Amy Webb, economic development and marketing officer. 38

And, if taking to the air isn’t your thing, why not experience the change of season by bike? 1000 Islands Bicycle Company offers cycling tours along eastern Ontario’s portion of the Great Waterfront Trail, which stretches from Ajax to the Quebec border. The trail passes through TLTI along the Thousand Islands Parkway.
Connecting With the Environment through the Trails System The Township is proud of its natural environment. And, there is no better way to connect with the environment than through our amazing trails. To this end, TLTI will host the third annual Economic Development Summit with a focus on trails. This year, the theme is Discover Direction: The Business of Trails. “Come, join us November 1, when we will host area businesses and showcase many of the hidden gems within our Township that support experiential tourism. Whether it be hiking, cycling, paddling, or snowshoeing on trails, or arts and culture tours, or motorized adventures,” says Amy. “There is so much to discover here, and many of our trails go beyond formal borders.” The summit will have a guest speaker from North Hastings to discuss their trail strategy success story, a focus on upgrading marketing models that cater to trail users with Trish Manning Consulting, and understanding how partnering with the Ontario Trails Council can build capacity. “By helping our business community recognize the opportunities around them
and developing organizational and marketing skills, we will be better prepared to host tourists, no matter what time of year,” Amy says.
Outdoor Fun “It’s not all work and no play around here, though,” says Kim Goodman, manager of recreation and community partnerships. “We definitely know how to have some fun, too!” The annual Parkway Challenge, hosted on the National Day of Fitness, encourages participants to run, walk, wheel or cycle the route. “We also hosted The Great Waterfront Trail Adventure this year with an afternoon stop in Rockport,” says Amy. “The group of 160 cyclists enjoyed a wellearned break in the beautiful village, perusing galleries, filling restaurants and enjoying a Heart of the Islands boat ride from Rockport Cruises.” ReFINEdKINGSTON

The day was a success; many said they would like to come back again, especially in the fall. The Autumn Equinox sparks quite a few outdoor activities, but none more attended or enjoyed as the Seniors’ Picnic and Walk through Charleston Lake Provincial Park. The Friends of the Park work with the Township to partner with three senior groups and two retirement living homes in an active living exercise. “Since these groups are spread out across the Township, we organize busing, including an accessible vehicle,” shares Kim. “It is important that all members of our community have equal opportunities to enjoy the beautiful wonders here.” The group organizes multiple walks with varying degrees of difficulty, and the Ontario Parks staff are available to share details on the surroundings by describing the setting, including the sights and sounds.
Each of these villages have winter festivals to embrace the ice and snow. From ice skating to curling, wagon rides to making bannock, sledding to enjoying custom-made penguin chocolates, the villages welcome visitors to join in.
“All hearts were full after this venture,” says Kim.
Volunteers: The Heart of a Community
As the cold snowy weather approaches, this community isn’t slowing down. On the contrary, they are just gearing up to play away the winter blues.
Volunteers are key to the community. In rural locations, they are sometimes the glue that binds it all together. This holds especially true in Leeds and the Thousand Islands.
The Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands is fortunate to touch on two major Canadian waterways: The Rideau Canal and the St. Lawrence River. The communities of Seeley’s Bay and Rockport, which kiss the shores of these mighty mammoths, celebrate their wonder in winter, too. 40

“Our volunteers give their time, knowledge, and expertise in so many different ways, and each plays a part in this healthy, vibrant place,” says Amy. This year, feedback suggested more support is needed in recruiting volunteer forces.
“We took the leap as the first municipality to join the membership of the St. Lawrence-Rideau Volunteer Centre,” says Amy. This organization, over the last 35 years, has played a vital role in building community capacity by providing leadership opportunities, training and placement for volunteers in nonprofit organizations and creating a sense of belonging and inclusion in the community for volunteers. Non-profit agencies and organizations have been served through the promotion of volunteerism, the recruitment and referral of volunteers, and
education and networking support to agencies and individuals. “We understand how volunteerism is changing and want to work with our citizens to embrace new ways to ask for help and look at engaging younger participants,” says Amy. In partnership with the St. Lawrence-Rideau Volunteer Centre, the Township will offer a series of workshops on recruiting, micro-volunteerism, risk management, incorporation and grant writing skills. “Our plan is to help build capacity, knowledge, and supply tools and resources to allow our non-profit groups to flourish,” says Amy.
The success of our community events is due to the many volunteers and local businesses that contribute. “Please allow us to extend our heartfelt gratitude,” says Kim. “We couldn’t pull it off without the amazing volunteers, business and participants here!”
Did You Know? • Almost one half of Canadians volunteer • Raising money and hosting events are the two most common activities that volunteers engage in • 1.1 million fulltime equivalent jobs are represented by volunteering annually • 87 per cent of the Canadian population views volunteering as vital to societal and economic well-being Source: www.150statcan.gc.ca

THROUGH HIS LENS The Tragically Hip’s Official Photographer to Present a Tale of Love, Hope and Admiration to Kingstonians In Support of Hospice Kingston’s THE TIME IS NOW Campaign By Katrina Geenevasen Photos David Bastedo

ReFINEdKINGSTON
Last year,
millions watched as Canada’s iconic rock band The Tragically Hip walked off the stage for the final time, bidding adieu to an extraordinary career that spanned more than two decades. The tale of Gord Downie, Paul Langlois, Rob Baker, Gord Sinclair and Johnny Fay – collectively known to many simply as The Hip – may have ended after that final bow, but for David Bastedo, who’d acted as The Hip’s official photographer for 12 years, the story from behind the lens lived on. And it needed to be told.
The Beginnings With a background in marketing, digital media and advertising, David’s journey with The Hip began when the band brought him on board to improve fans’ online experience. “When I started working with The Hip, they were working on ‘Yer Favourites,’ and they needed someone new with fresh blood to push buttons and to change things a bit, and I had this idea of content.” He began mining data, sourcing fans’ videos of the band performing at countless venues, and pairing them with the set lists from the corresponding performance. It was a welcome challenge; one he enjoyed. But there was still a piece of the puzzle missing. David was a photographer at heart, so it seemed fitting that his role eventually shifted, and he became the official photographer for The Tragically Hip. ReFINEdKINGSTON

Through My Lens: A Tale of Love, Hope, and Admiration “A year after the final concert, after Gord died, I decided I was ready to do something,” says David. “I wanted to tell the story with the media I had. And to tell it a little bit differently.” Ultimately, it’s how the idea for An Abridged Exploration of Love & Admiration. Part 1. Gord., was born. He’s been hosting the instillation at various venues across Ontario since then, but now, it’s Kingston’s turn. 48

Through My Lens: A tale of Love, Hope, and Admiration is set to take place at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts on Dec. 13. The highly-anticipated show, set against the backdrop of a cocktail party, will feature 50 photographs that have been pulled from David’s archives; some of the photographer’s favourite images that perfectly narrate the story of Canada’s beloved band. An interactive, multimedia presentation chronicling Bastedo’s years with The Hip will follow. It will feature Paul Langlois, Gord Sinclair, Chris Koster, Jim Bryson, and Sarah Harmer, as well as interpretive dance by long-time Downie collaborator, Andrea Naan.

Proceeds from the event will go towards Hospice Kingston’s THE TIME IS NOW Campaign, which is raising money to help fund the building of Kingston’s first hospice residence and palliative care centre.
A Cathartic Experience Considering David had been with the band since 2004, there were thousands of images to comb through for the upcoming event, but it was a welcome challenge. Cathartic, even. “I’ve cried and I’ve laughed and there have been many smiles; as I remember the places and events surrounding each frame – a vignette of my life – a song in my head – each encapsulating a special moment shared with friends,” David says in his blog. David chose to sort through his archives out of order. There’s a certain beauty to randomness, after all. “It was like opening up these treasure chests, and remembering every photograph. There was something worthwhile about each and every one. It was like waking up, and remembering a dream.” It’s been two years of trying to figure out what it all means, he says. “To me, to other people, to fans. And I wanted to tell my story. This came out of my own process of grief.” “It’s a series of connections, experiences, observations and reflections I have had over the years and how they affected me and other people,” he continues. “It’s not the story of the band. It’s my story, and the band intersects with it.” ReFINEdKINGSTON

Joanne Langlois, Paul Langlois’ wife, is the driving force behind the show. She was the one who encouraged David to bring his narrative to a Kingston audience; back to The Hip’s home, where the story first began. “The void that Gord left in everyone’s life is huge, and we all miss him on different levels and people are not ready for the band to go away,” says Joanne, who stresses that she speaks for herself, not the band. “What I like is it will breathe more life into The Hip briefly; give a snapshot of all 12 years David was there, without coming from the band itself, so it’s not gratuitous. It’s not sharing inside stories, so much as David will talk about moments… personal reflections of his own. It provides a glimpse of The Hip 52
ReFINEdKINGSTON
that you wouldn’t get otherwise, and it serves as a tribute.” “At the end of the day, everyone knows the ending to this story; I can’t change it,” says David of the event. “I’m just adding a different perspective, a different set of eyes, a different colour commentary to how it all happened.”
Hospice Kingston’s THE TIME IS NOW Campaign Over the span of two years, the Campaign has raised more than $9,000,000 of the $11,000,000 goal to build the city’s 10-bed hospice facility. Construction is set to begin next spring. “There are 44 hospice residences in Ontario,” says Donna Dwyre, manager of resource development and communications for Hospice Kingston.
“Kingston is the largest community in southeastern Ontario that does not have a hospice residence.” The city is known as a leader in healthcare with premiere facilities, specialists, leadingedge researchers and innovative healthcare delivery, continues Dwyre, and yet, the choice to live one‘s last days in a hospice residence is missing from the continuum of care. “This Campaign is about our community supporting our community,” she explains. When asked, most people indicate they would prefer to die at home, and yet, almost 70 per cent of Canadian deaths occur in a hospital. “Most people want to die at home, however, it is often very difficult on the family and caregiver when the time is nearing,” explains Dwyre. “At a hospice residence, the
healthcare team allows the spouse to be a spouse and the son or daughter to be the son or daughter again.”
Finding Another Story At the end of it all, Through My Lens: A tale of Love, Hope, and Admiration simply comes down to David telling his narrative; all in support of a great cause. “It means a lot to me, and I hope it means something to other people. I didn’t set out to do anything like this, other than tell the story.” “It will be a poignant, heartfelt evening, and I hope everyone walks away feeling good, and inspired about something in their lives,” he continues. “But right now, there’s this unfinished story. I feel like I have to finish it for my benefit, and then find another one.”

HEALTH & WELLNESS
What is the
HEALTHIEST DIET? By Sue Corliss, R.H.N., C.N.E.
Ketogenic Diet
As a Holistic Nutritionist, one of the questions I get asked most often from clients is, “Which diet is the healthiest?” With so much misleading or conflicting information available today, it can be nearly impossible to decipher it all and know what is best.
Although the “Keto” diet seems to have gained a lot of popularity within the last decade, it is actually close to 100 years old. It was originally developed as a way to treat epilepsy, but is now commonly used as a weight loss tool, or to help those with diabetes and certain types of cancer.
There are many popular diets and dietary trends being followed today, each with their own benefits and challenges. Let’s start by breaking some of them down. 54
ReFINEdKINGSTON
What is it? The premise behind the Ketogenic diet is high-fat, lowcarb meals. The majority of
your daily intake is in the form of fat, while including moderate amounts of protein and very little carbohydrates. By depriving your body of carbohydrates, your body eventually stops using glucose as energy, and begins to burn ketones/fat as its primary source. Benefits Most people who follow the keto diet will experience some weight loss, especially very early on in their journey (this is the main reason people try the Keto diet today!). Thanks to the increased
amount of fat being consumed, you can also expect to have more energy and mental clarity, while feeling full for longer after each meal. Lastly, since you are eliminating sugar and all processed foods, inflammation and insulin levels naturally decrease. Challenges There are a number of challenges that accompany the Ketogenic diet. First and foremost, it can be extremely difficult to follow long-term, and is very limiting. Also, when eliminating fruits and many vegetables, you naturally decrease your fiber intake, which can have harmful effects on digestion, metabolism and other body functions.
With so much misleading or conflicting information available today, it can be nearly impossible to decipher it all and know what is best. Another problem is that many people following this diet do not consume healthy fats and proteins, and end up loading up on inflammatory, processed foods such as cheese, dairy products and bacon. Eating this way in the long-term can lead to deficiencies in key nutrients. If you’re going to follow the Keto way of eating, be sure to do so consistently and with healthful foods. ReFINEdKINGSTON
55
animal products into their diets, including eggs and dairy. Benefits The major benefits of following a diet that is free of animal products is the increased focus on eating whole foods that are full of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and fiber.
Paleolithic Diet The Paleo diet has also been around for hundreds of years and is based on the traditional “huntergatherer” diets of our ancestors. By eating foods that are close to those eaten in the preagricultural era, you are optimizing health while decreasing your risk of developing chronic and inflammatory conditions. What is it? The basis of the Paleo diet is plenty of meat, fish and vegetables, with no grains, sugar or processed foods. The goal is to consume primarily whole foods that our ancestors would have had access to in order to reduce the risk of modern day ailments, such as diabetes, inflammation and other chronic conditions. Benefits One of the main benefits of the Paleo diet is the elimination of inflammatory foods. It is also high in healthy fats and proteins – both of which contribute to balanced 56
ReFINEdKINGSTON
blood sugar, satiety, as well as healthy skin, hair and nails. Challenges This diet can be extremely restricting for some people, which makes it both difficult to follow and not sustainable. A Paleo diet can also be excessively hard to follow for vegans.
Vegan/ Vegetarian Diet Although there are vast differences between a vegan and vegetarian diet, both have become more and more common in recent years. There are various reasons that one would choose a vegan or vegetarian diet, including both ethical and environmental beliefs. What is it? The elimination of meat is the basis of both vegan and vegetarian diets. However, those who follow a vegan diet also choose to eliminate all animal products and byproducts, while some vegetarians continue to incorporate some
Challenges A vegetarian or vegan diet can pose certain challenges, including a lack of variety, and deficiencies in nutrients including B-vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids. In addition to being restricting, many individuals following a vegan/vegetarian diet rely on pre-packaged, processed foods to supplement their diet, which are typically full of sugar, additives and unhealthy ingredients. As you can see, there is no perfect diet for everyone. Everyone has unique needs, genes and starting points, all of which need to been closely considered before making any diet or lifestyle changes. The best diet is one that works for both your body and your lifestyle. Many people begin a diet as a way to lose weight, but it is important to understand that just because a diet results in weight loss, does not necessarily make it the healthiest option. You need to consider what you are giving up, which is often key nutrients that your body needs to function optimally. Aside from therapeutic diets that need to be followed to treat a specific condition or issue, I believe that you should find what makes you feel best, and don’t worry about putting a label on it! Living a healthy, balanced lifestyle doesn’t have to be complicated and by listening to your body, you can start to figure out what the healthiest diet really is – for you!

Kids love to say hello to Cataraqui Dental Centre’s pet fish, Norman.

Start your child’s healthy dental routines from the root. “It’s important to start good dental habits even before the first teeth erupt,” says Dr. Patrick McDonough at Cataraqui Dental Centre. “Wiping your child’s gums with a wet cloth after feeding can help develop a routine while also preventing bacterial or fungal infections.” 58
ReFINEdKINGSTON
When the first tooth erupts, you should begin brushing the teeth with a soft-bristled infant toothbrush to remove plaque.
Water is okay if needed.”
“A smear of toothpaste is recommended” says Dr. McDonough, emphasizing that “it’s important to brush after their last feeding [of the day], and to avoid milk or juice in the bottle, especially at night.
“They help with speech, chewing and provide a path for permanent teeth to erupt,” he says.
Maintaining baby teeth can have many positive effects on your child.
You should keep an eye on your child’s teeth as you help them brush to make sure they are
coming in healthy. If your child is in pain, children’s acetaminophen can help as long as your child is okay to take the medication, says Dr. McDonough. “Pain, swelling, redness or discoloured teeth are all signs of potential infection and should be assessed immediately by a dentist.” If your children are playing sports, have them wear a wellfitted protective mouth guard. Parents and dentists know that it’s impossible to keep children from the trips and falls that come with a normal day of play. “If there is trauma to a tooth, keep any fragment or the tooth itself in a liquid such as milk and take it to the dentist as soon as possible,” says Dr. McDonough. “A dentist will assess the damage to the tooth. Oftentimes an X-ray will help detect any damage to the root or to any adult teeth below the baby tooth. The sooner the child is seen, the better the prognosis for the tooth going forward.”
It is recommended to schedule your child’s first dentist appointment when their first tooth erupts on or by their first birthday. At the Cataraqui Dental Centre, children have their initial visit with a certified dental professional in the “kid-friendly” room filled with bean bag chairs, toys, books and, of course, everyone’s favourite fish, Norman. “It is important to get your child used to the dental chair, mirror and what it means to come to the dentist for a check-up,” says Dr. McDonough. “We also provide information for parents and answer their questions regarding their child’s oral hygiene.”
significant pain or discomfort to the child,” he says. Easing any fears your children have of visiting the dentist should be an important lead-up to their first and continuing dental visits. Although sedation is sometimes used to help calm a child with extreme anxiety or nerves, Dr. McDonough stresses it’s important to remember that parents have a big influence on how their child perceives going to the dentist, so do your best to make it a positive experience.

How does CoolSculpting work? Fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than surrounding tissues. CoolSculpting technology safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), and then die. Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted you. Am I a good candidate? Good candidates have noticeable bulges in certain areas they’d like to get rid of. The CoolSculpting fat reduction procedure is specifically designed for those who have unwanted fat that resists diet and exercise. Unlike gastric bypass surgery, the CoolSculpting procedure is not a weight loss solution for people who are obese. It is, however a non-surgical alternative to liposuction.
Is the CoolSculpting procedure safe? The CoolSculpting procedure is Health Canada-approved for treating any area under the jawline. Most popular areas treated include the abdomen, love-handles, arms, bra fat, inner and outer thighs and double chin. With more than six million CoolSculpting treatments performed worldwide, it is proven to be a safe and effective treatment for non-surgical fat reduction. What does it feel like? As the cooling begins during the first few minutes, you will feel pressure and intense cold. This soon dissipates. Many people read, watch videos, work on their laptop, or even take a nap during their treatment. When will I see results? You may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after your treatment, and will experience the most dramatic results after two months. But your body will still flush out fat cells and continues doing so for up to four to six months after treatment. At Kingston Laser, we offer a complimentary consultation with our highly experienced staff. We will walk you through the treatment process, answer your questions and let you know if CoolSculpting is the treatment for you.

1. Mental strength for optimal performance 2. Mental strength for return to sport post-injury or concussion 3. Biomechanical and functional sport specific exercise prescription (teaching individuals and groups on proper mechanics in movements to maximize performance)
4. Academic and Business seminars (teaching strategies that athletes use to help clients focus on improving their performance in school and work). There are many obstacles and mental blocks that can appear at any age, both in a sport and post-injury, and with Forza Consulting’s coaching and strategies, young athletes can learn the proper methods to build their mind, overcome their fears, and get their heads into the game stronger than ever.

Microbiome Balancer The microbiome is the ecosystem that lives in and on the human body. For years, we've been hearing about how important the gut microbiome is to health, but your skin microbiome is just as crucial. Scientists are now exploring how the skin microbiome may play a key role in the appearance of the visible signs of aging. We now know that due to many factors including how we live and aging, our skin microbiome becomes unbalanced, contributing to a weakening of the skin barrier, one of our first lines of defense against pollution and the environment. With less natural protection, our skin loses more and more moisture leading to the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles. That's why we are obsessed with Joyome, the ultimate product combo that balances the skin microbiome. Added bonus? It's powered by supercharged age-defying actives that mean a younger looking you.
------------------------------------------------------ ,
Joyome is the brand that we can't get enough of. It's a super simplified beauty regimen, with just two products that are powerhouses. Working together synergistically, the Joyome Illuminating Day Serum (your AM must) and Intensive Overnight Repair Serum (your PM ritual), work to correct the visible signs of aging while expertly balancing the skin microbiome through a patent-pending complex. And the delivery system? Revolutionary. Joyome's HydraLipid Delivery System is first-to-market, patented technology that is scientifically demonstrated to enhance the absorption rate of active ingredients. We've been using it and our skin is positively glowing. Looks like you can bottle youth after all.

Let's talk prebiotics A prebiotic is a food that helps to promote the growth of benefical microorgansims. Keep in mind your gut and skin microbiomes are different, with different organisms, so skincare that works with your microbiome needs to have a targeted approach. One category we've heard a lot about is probiotic skincare, which uses microbes from soil, food byproducts and even 'inactivated' (dead) microbes. Obviously, these aren't naturally found on your face! At best, these products do nothing to affect the facial microbiome. At worst, they introduce non-native populations with potentially harmful outcomes. That's one of the reasons we love Joyome. It's chock full of a clinically validated prebiotic ingredient that feeds the skin microbiome superstar, S. epidermidis.

Fructooligosaccharides are a prebiotic ingredient. Joyome derives its FOS from chicory, or Cichorium intibus, a plant in the daisy family that stores inulin.

n order to start living a healthier lifestyle and achieve your health goals, “you don’t have to give up everything you love,” says Sue Corliss, a Registered Holistic Nutritionist and certified Culinary Nutrition Expert living in Kingston, who has recently started a new approach to nutrition coaching and services in town called Homemade Healthy.
With her goal of educating as many people as possible on the benefits of understanding that much of our overall health can be directly attributed to the food we eat and the connection that exists between our mind and body, Sue has begun her Homemade Healthy program by focusing on people who are just getting started on their health-conscious journey.
Sue believes that in order to truly change your unhealthy habits, it takes more of a gradual approach.
“As long as you are informed on the impact what you are choosing to eat or not eat has on your body, you can make the right choices depending on what works for you.”

“I offer individual, couples, and family nutrition coaching,” she says. “I come up with meal plans, lifestyle suggestions and supplements based on each individual’s goals. Some people prefer to get a couple of friends together and come to a workshop or learning program, whereas individuals might have one specific issue and want to focus more on their specific needs.” Sue also offers community and corporate workshops and has a group cooking program starting in the fall. There are many misconceptions that people have about the foods they eat and how they can affect each person’s body, she says.
Many don’t realize their struggles with their body can actually be a sign of something else. With the Homemade Healthy program, Sue studies the symptoms that her clients are having and then finds the ties these have with their goals and health issues. “For example, sometimes weight loss problems can be linked to digestive issues in the body,” says Sue. Kingston has quickly grown into a hub for health-inspired individuals and many businesses have thrived by focusing on offering an alternative, yet still quick, option to fast food and services and activities that promote a healthy lifestyle. “I think that a lot of people in Kingston are very health-conscious and I think there’s a lot of success out there for different gyms and yoga studios and restaurants. I think I can add to that,” she says.
There are many different approaches to nutrition among other great practitioners in Kingston, and Sue’s focus is on making it accessible for someone who wants to start making healthier habits, especially those who want to learn more about making these changes with holistic nutrition and without cutting everything they love out of their life.

JUST BREATHE Integrating Meditation Into Your Daily Routine By Kimberley Falk
From the moment you wake up, your mind is a hamster pumped up with caffeine, running its never ending race on that wheel. You need to get to work on time, make sure you meet that deadline, the babysitter hasn’t confirmed yet, and your car needs to get to the dealer for a tuning by this afternoon. 68

The National Science Foundation says each of us has up to 50,000 thoughts in a day and yet for many of us, very few of those thoughts are focused on not thinking. Meditation is important for stress and anxiety relief and is a contributing factor for daily happiness and minimizing those negative thoughts that pop up outside of your control. If you’re wondering what you can do to help slow down those thoughts and incorporate some meditation into your day, here are some simple things you can add to your daily routine to get you started.
Start With An App-etizer Smartphones are the centre of many of our daily tasks; use them to your advantage by adding a meditation app to yours. There are apps out there that can remind you to breathe, drink water, and can play therapeutic music to help you sleep at night. The Mindfulness App and Calm are both great choices that allow you to develop a meditation schedule around the rest of your day.
While You Commute, Communicate With Yourself Have you ever gotten lost in thought during your travels to the extent that you don’t even remember getting to your destination? It’s scary. No matter how you get to work each day, use that alone time to practice meditation and focus on your mind.
Try to think of one line/mantra that you can say to yourself whenever you find your stress levels are rising. Even simply saying, “Eliminate the worry” can make a huge change on your thought path.

Instead of letting that traffic jam be a chance to worry about arriving late, focus on everything going on around you. The university student outside walking her dog, the seat belt against your chest, the sound of the air vents and your breath. Letting your thoughts clear allows you to embrace your day with positivity instead of bogging it down with everything that could go wrong. 70

When You’re Waking Up Invest in an alarm tone that will peacefully wake you up 10 minutes before you actually need to get up, turn on some calming music, and spend 20 minutes doing this exercise: Put your hand on your stomach and take in a deep breath through your nose, letting your entire chest fill up with air and your stomach
push up against your palm. With your lungs full of air, take five seconds to focus on your toes. If they’re tense, give them a wiggle and relax. Let out that breath slowly through your mouth. On your next breath, focus on your calves, then your knees, and so on. Do the same meditation exercise when it’s time to sleep at night.
EXPERT ADVICE CHIROPRACTIC CARE
Baby’s here, now what? You would think that having the baby was the hard part, right? Not so much. Pain after having a baby is common, but not normal. Too many moms are suffering with neck and midback pain, tailbone pain, and even headaches.

Congratulations, you had a baby! While becoming a mother has been an incredible experience, once the euphoria of the birth wears off, you begin to realize what a toll the pregnancy has taken on your body. That’s okay. Chiropractors get it. And they can help. Your body is an amazing thing, especially in its ability to recover and rejuvenate. All it needs is the right kind of convincing. Easing your transition into motherhood is always a chiropractor’s top priority.
Going into mama bear mode is only accepted in extreme situations, not in your day-to-day operations. Self-care is an integral part of being a new mom. Sadly, self-care is commonly over-looked. Did you know? Recent research has found that new moms spend a mere 17 minutes to themselves each day. As my beautiful, brilliant wife reminds us, “Just like when on an airplane; the flight attendant will tell you if the air masks fall down, put yours on first before you put on your loved ones.” You can’t help anybody if you are down and out. Postpartum chiropractic care can mean different things to different moms. However, the most common concerns it can help with are: to alleviate the pain of childbirth, bring your core muscles back, allow for comfortable breast or bottle feeding and encourage long-term wellness using your body’s natural mechanics. Recovering from labour isn’t always easy, especially since you now have a little one to take care of all day and night. If you’re in pain or having trouble reaching, lifting, or sitting, postpartum chiropractic can help. My wife has always mentioned how “pregnancy can bring out all your weaknesses.”
Let postpartum chiropractic care help strengthen those weaknesses and increase the joy of motherhood. Postpartum chiropractic care targets and addresses the root cause of your pain. Chiropractic adjustments will decrease the pain associated with pelvic and hip misalignment and postpartum exercises will start to increase your core muscles, helping your body strengthen and recover. Remember, chiropractic adjustments are safe, gentle and very effective, even for your newborn. Being born is a big job. Even with a gentle vaginal birth, the passage through the pelvis can be long and tumultuous. Then if instruments are needed to assist the birth like forceps, vacuum, or manual neck traction, they can make things tougher on mom and baby. Cesarean-sections are no walk in the park either; it is major abdominal surgery and babies are pulled out by whatever is closest to the incision. All this mechanical stress is tough on your little baby’s spine and developing nervous system. Getting your kids looked at by a chiropractor with a special interest in pediatrics shortly after birth is a great idea! Whether you are a first-time parent or adding onto a growing family, you deserve to enjoy a happy, healthy start just like your little bundle. Call today to book your wellness check with your local chiropractor. They look forward to meeting you. ReFINEdKINGSTON

Members are also eligible for additional discounts on much-needed courses.” There are other firms in the area who offer to help companies set up policies after an incident has occurred, but very few take the same approach to help businesses set up their programs so that the incident never needs to occur before changes happen. “My team and I pride ourselves on becoming a partner with our client firms, helping to mentor the management team and get our face out into the community to let them know we’re here to help with the complex, everchanging legislation. What should I make for dinner? Why is that question sometimes so hard to answer? Typically, we stare at the fridge and hope that something will come to us. But what if your spice cabinet could guide your decision making? Your spice cabinet can be used as a tool to empower you and help you narrow down what type of cuisine you would like to make the most. It starts with two simple exercises: simplifying the spice aisle and understanding what types of spices fit certain types of cuisines.

ith the holiday season quickly approaching, I thought it might be the perfect time to chat about sparkling wines. While often reserved for special occasions, in the wine world, we love sparkling wines because they are arguably the best wines to pair with any dish. With a lively body and refreshing flavour, sparkling wines always enhance the dish without ever dominating it. The question for you as a consumer is, “What are the best sparkling wine options for me based on quality and cost?” 82
ReFINEdKINGSTON
Let’s start by distinguishing the differing styles of sparkling wine and thus a bit more information on what gives the various styles a fizzy structure. After the fermentation process is complete, the wine then goes through a secondary fermentation in some form of closed environment, either in a bottle or a tank. The secondary fermentation occurs by exposing the existing wine to active yeast and sugar. When this occurs, carbon dioxide is captured, creating bubbles and its effervescent style.
Champagne is the most popular of all sparkling wines, named both for where it comes from — Champagne, France — as well as how it is made. Known as the “traditional method,” the final wine is captured in bottles, thus creating a powerful mousse. As it is quite labour intensive, the traditional method is typically a more expensive option. Note that it is not just the method that creates a higher price with champagne, it is also due to the fact that there is a high demand for it, coupled with a limited amount of production given the defined geographic location. My tip for buyers: look for small champagne producers when shopping rather than the bigger, well-known producers, as they are generally priced lower and are of excellent quality.
Sparkling wines such as Cava from Spain, Franciacorta from Italy and Cremant from various regions in France are fantastic options and could be priced as low as 25 per cent of the cost of commercial mass-produced champagne houses. Further, if you want to support local producers, there are many excellent options. In fact, in Ontario, we produce world-class traditional method sparklers at fantastic prices. Do you enjoy Prosecco? It uses a more utilitarian method called the Charmat method. Instead of using a bottle for the second fermentation, it uses a large pressurized vat with carbon dioxide added to the entire tank. Prosecco is certainly the most popular selling sparkler in our
market due to its easy drinking style. Stylistically, Prosecco can range from Brut (bone dry) to Extra Dry (slightly sweeter) and Demi-Sec (a dessert style wine) so best to read your labels to ensure you settle on a style that suits your palate. While Prosecco is often thought of as a good-valued sparkler, my advice is to branch out this holiday season and taste a few other options. Head to the LCBO vintages section; you’ll typically have better options than the everyday shelf items. You will be pleasantly surprised at the pricing of these “Champagne method” sparklers – especially given their excellent quality. Me…I am shopping for a lovely Rose sparkler to pair with my holiday bird!
Are the higher prices for champagne getting too out of reach? The good news is that winemakers around the world also employ this traditional method. These are the wines that stock my fridge and cellar because they really outperform, especially given their lower prices.

History and Coffee Culture Meet at
Qrio Antique Shop & Café By Marina Darling Photos Stephen Wild
There’s a new café in town and it’s the place to go for organic coffee, fresh food, and Canadian antiques and artifacts. Born out of a love for modernday coffee culture and history, Qrio Antique Shop & Café is a destination unlike any other in Kingston. Located at 671 Montreal St., Qrio will enthrall you with history and culture. Vidyut (Vid) Banerjee and his wife Mitali, owners of Kingston Coffee House in the Kingston Centre and Springer Market Square, opened Qrio as a passion project. “It’s a combination of all my passions,” Vid says, explaining 84

his love for history and historical artifacts from Kingston and the 1000 Islands. When Vid moved to Kingston, he was keen to learn more about the area. Interested in history in general, he wanted to know what made Kingston unique, noting that his time spent in Mumbai and Toronto left him feeling disenchanted with big cities. In the process, Vid became fascinated with Kingston’s history and he began collecting antiques, books, and Canadian artifacts. Eventually, the idea for Qrio was born. Qrio Antique Shop & Café is a place where Vid wants people to learn more about history in a cool and casual café setting.
“It’s a café that will spark conversations,” he says. “The setting makes Qrio unique, since it is the first vintage café in Kingston.” Vid is excited for his customers to spend time in a coffee shop where everything from the decorations to the furniture is vintage. “Everything has been repurposed and has history attached to it,” he says. Although history is a large component of the cafe, Qrio also encompasses Vid and Mitali’s love for cooking and gardening. Qrio’s location includes a café area, a fully-licensed kitchen, and a private, enclosed patio. Vid’s excitement for the kitchen and the patio stems from the
potential to expand his food offerings at his other café locations and to cultivate an herb and vegetable garden. “Mitali and I love plants,” says Vid. “In three years’ time, we would love to be self-sustainable with the veggies in our sandwiches.” Vid’s philosophy with Qrio Antique Shop & Café is similar to that of the two Kingston Coffee House locations: he is eager to share knowledge, stimulate conversations, and foster community. “We want more and more people to know that we are about community first, not the coffee. Coffee you can order, but not community.” Vid and Mitali are particularly excited to support community by displaying work from local artists in addition to serving up great coffee. “We started an ‘Artist of the Month’ series last year,” Vid explains. “We choose a theme and support local artists that people can connect with.” It all comes down to connection at Qrio Antique Shop and Café — whether over art, coffee, food, or history.
“I have to share this,” Vid says. “Qrio is going to be that place where you can sit on an antique piece of furniture and have a conversation. I want people to experience history and absorb the different environment of Qrio.”

ot Brand, manager of Lakeland Plant World in Dartmouth, says the primary benefit of indoor plants is they absorb carbon dioxide while releasing oxygen. But indoor plants can also improve the air in other ways. A study on the benefits of indoor plants comes from a rather unlikely source. In 1989, the NASA Clean Air Study published a comprehensive list of indoor plants that remove toxins such as benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene from the air. The study was looking at ways to improve the air quality for astronauts in its space stations, but its list also provides great suggestions for plants that homeowners can use in their own spaces. Brand says while all plants clean the air, some are better than others.
Brand says mother-in-law’s tongue is a good plant for those who don’t think they have a green thumb. She calls it a “tough-as-nails” plant. “Some people love it and some people hate it, but I know for a fact it tolerates missed waterings and lowlight conditions,” she says. Factors to consider when shopping for indoor plants are how much light is in your home, the space where you want to display the plant, and the amount of moisture it will need. Succulents are also a good option for those without a green thumb. Over the winter months, succulents go pseudo-dormant.
Succulent
“From that study came a lot of knowledge about what cleans the air the best,” says Brand. She suggests Sansevieria trifasciata, commonly known as mother-in-law’s tongue, as a good starting place. It’s on the NASA Clean Air Study list. Its leaves are dark green and structured and could fit well into any space. The NASA list also included peace lily, spider plants, a number of dracaenas, aloe vera, and Boston ferns. Besides cleaning the air, Brand says indoor plants provide a sense of calm, improve general wellbeing, add additional humidity to the air, and create a buffer against noise. Use plants on a windowsill to cut down on noise from outside, or place them along the wall in an office to lessen the noise from common rooms in your home. Not all plants on the list, however, will be suitable for every home. There are other concerns with indoor plants, such as the amount of maintenance required and if the plants are toxic and harmful to pets and children.

“As long as you have a nice sunny, bright spot for them, you can let them go bone dry and they do just fine,” says Brand. Some indoor plants are toxic to cats and dogs, so if you have pets, you’ll have to be careful. While the peace lily will clean your air, it will also make your cat sick. Dracaenas are toxic to cats and dogs. There are a number of ways to display your indoor plants. Basic terrariums made with a glass vase and lid or even a mason jar is suitable for succulents. Brand says keep terrariums in brightly lit spot but not direct sun. You can use old china or dishes or a decorative crate for a rustic look, just simply drill a hole in the bottom for drainage. “All plants are best when there’s drainage,” she adds. You can even make your own living wall. Brand says it’s as simple as mounting several pots on the wall, arranging them in a design, and deciding which plant to drop into which pot. Pre-designed living wall units are available for purchase, or if you’re handy, you can make a living wall out of a wooden palette; just check out Pinterest. The key to a successful living wall is in the plants you choose and where you place them. A kitchen or bathroom is a good location, as the rooms offer extra humidity. Succulents work well in this climate. “You have to choose plants that are easygoing and like that situation,” says Brand.

“Every great building once began as a building plan. That means, sitting in that building plan on the table is a mighty structure not yet seen. It is the same with dreams.” - Isrealmore Ayivor Sitting at a table with dreamers is how Kristian Vincent of Paradise Construction begins each job that he commits to. He may sit with potential homeowners a dozen times before his crew puts a shovel in the ground because every project must be built first on paper. Plans are presented, designs are drawn, potential hurdles are anticipated and the project 90

is prioritized from beginning to end in order to fulfill every detail of the homeowners dream. Now reaching its seventh year in business, Paradise Construction has just completed a full startto-finish custom designed and
built home. Located on Brady Road in Napanee, this custom home began with a floorplan specifically designed to meet the homeowner’s needs. Using a wheelchair and walker, the home owner needed specific
dimensions and an accessible layout. The one-level bungalow is an open concept style with spacious living areas and barrierfree elements throughout, such as walk-in shower stalls, sliding pocket doors and wider than average hallways. The kitchen is a custom design build and features granite counter tops. As licensed ICF installers, Paradise Construction was able to meet the homeowners desire for an energy efficient home by using insulated concrete form construction. ICF holds heat better than traditional framing. Combined with infloor heating and a forced air furnace, this house is ready to withstand any Canadian winter. To enhance energy efficiency, all indoor and outdoor lighting are LED lights. The exterior of the home is handsomely accented with modern stone and features an enormous finished garage. All entry ways are level with the surrounding exterior. Upon completion, homeowner, Anne Marie expressed their gratitude. “Ron and I are very grateful for the house,” she says. “Kristian and his guys worked hard to make sure all Ron’s needs were met for his health. He also enjoyed talking and watching the boys work. Thank you. Everyone that’s been here loves the house. Be proud Kristian and guys.” ReFINEdKINGSTON

While certainly able to complete big building projects, Paradise Construction is also eager to take on smaller, unique home enhancements like the sunroom and deck recently added to a Clipper Court home in Kingston’s east end. Paradise Construction built a beautiful, spacious addition off the back of the home. Finished with hardwood to blend into the existing space, this room more than doubles living area during the spring, summer and fall seasons. Flooded with light through functional skylights and enhanced with LED lighting, this room can be used for multiple purposes throughout most of the year.

The deck is a level walkout constructed from maintenancefree composite material featuring a criss-cross pattern and double border trim. Paradise Construction builders added a privacy wall to match the decking and skirted the perimeter. A light valance was added featuring LED light strips to extend deck use into the evenings. Aluminum railings with tinted glass inserts add a modern touch and provide both privacy and wind protection without obstructing vision. To ensure years of use, the framing is protected on the top edge with “G tape which guards against standing water. The structural members will last the life of the composite decking. If you are dreaming of ways to expand your living space, or enhance what you already have, Paradise Construction can make your dreams come true. Kristian will be eager to sit down and discuss designs
with you whether your project is a bathroom renovation or a start-to-finish custom build. He has the knowledge and experience to take your plans from paper to the building site. His crew will complete the construction efficiently and exquisitely. Visit the Paradise Construction

piece of wood can create something both powerful and intricate with smooth craftsmanship that will last for many years. It was the art of bringing together one of the world’s most readily available resources that launched the partnership of two small woodworking/millworks businesses to put down roots in the Kingston community. With more than a decade of experience each, and six years of working together, Philip Dube and Justin Tetzlaff started Cubit Housing & Design – named after the ancient unit of measurement used by civilization’s first woodworkers – in the fall of 2015. “The market for cabinetry was a little low here. We thought since 94

we were close to both Ottawa and Toronto, there’d be an open market for the kind of work that we wanted to do,” says Justin. For the past two years, Cubit Housing & Design has been working alongside Mark McGrath of McGrath Millworks here in Kingston. Mark realized his passion for woodworking upon starting his career in Hawaii. With an education in heritage restoration and timber framing, Mark has been working in the field for 20 years and has grown a reputation in Kingston for his unique and creative woodworking abilities. With a plan of officially merging into one business “down the road,” both Cubit and McGrath Millworks have begun growing together at a fast pace, doubling the number and size of their projects.
A piece of wood can create something both powerful and intricate with smooth craftsmanship that will last for many years. Focusing on high-end residential and commercial work, and with large projects such as The Duchess Pub on Highway 15, where both Cubit Housing & Design and McGrath Millworks did all the interior carpentry work, Cubit and McGrath have grown a strong reputation, relying on mostly word of mouth and referrals alone. “Our level of quality and the size of projects we are capable of doing sets us apart, and we each bring skill sets that complement each other,” says Philip. Mark’s specialization in heritage restoration, Philip’s background
in cabinets and kitchens, and Justin’s dedicated skills in renovations and contracting has created an unstoppable team. “We like to put customers first and find out what their needs and wants are. We don’t just say ‘let us deal with it.’ We want to get as much input from our customers as possible so we can really give them the best finished product that we’re capable of giving them,” says Justin. When it comes to woodworking, it’s a passion and something that Philip has been surrounded by since a child growing up working with his father who is also a cabinet maker. “I love that the things we build are things that get used and enjoyed every day in somebody’s home,” he says. “I enjoy working with clients to figure out exactly what that is and how it can come together in their house.” From small to large, cottage work to fireplaces, staircase to dresser, Cubit Housing & Design and McGrath Millworks have proven that their passion for woodworking is rooted in every project they take on.

The finishing touches are what you see when you walk into a brand new or newly renovated home, and Don Hogan Carpentry’s interior designs are no exception. Specializing in interior stair and railing manufacturing and installing, Don Hogan Carpentry also builds and installs exterior stairs, aluminum maintenancefree exterior railings, exterior PVC columns, interior trim, interior shelving and closet designs and fireplace mantles. The business started with Don wanting to branch out on his own three years ago, leaving his job of 29 years in the construction industry. Says his wife and business partner Lorie Hogan, “He even put a new steel roof on our little 10x12 storage shed at our home to help store the overflow of tools and materials from our garage. Within a week of leaving his job and fixing up the shed, we quickly realized it would never work.” 96

Don’s reputation in the stair and railing industry far exceeded his expectations. With only word of mouth as advertising, the start-up business quickly swelled in demand. “His phone never stopped ringing from the time he turned it on,” says Lorie. “He quickly grew and trained a team and secured a 1250 sq. ft workshop with an office and doubled that in the next year. We currently have six full-time employees not including Don, myself and our daughter, Eva,” she adds. With an impeccable attention to detail and an “old school” hands-on method of design, the small business feel of Don Hogan Carpentry keeps Don and team in control of the quality and craftsmanship that must go into every piece, ensuring his name continues to build a stronger reputation with each project. “Stairs and railings in your home are a showpiece, something you want to last forever, so they should be beautiful and suit your personal decorating style,” she says. “There are so many choices now. The possibilities are endless.”
The variety of projects that Don Hogan Carpentry can engineer are limitless. “We love doing different and unique projects,” says Lorie. “I never thought I would say this, but I love shopping for wood! There are so many different species of wood. Each is beautiful in its own way, and Don knows which wood will work the best and achieve the desired look the client is going for.” Don Hogan Carpentry is located in Odessa, minutes to Kingston and Belleville. “We love the custom home builders in this area,” Lorie says. “We work with some of the best builders who take pride in their homes. Stairs and railings need to last for a long time — if not forever — and with Don overseeing it, they will.” “We can’t thank our team enough,” she adds. “It is a joy to work with people you can trust and who you enjoy being around. We are a family.” The Hogan team is excited to continue serving their customers with the quality and dedication they have come to expect from Don Hogan Carpentry.

EXPERT ADVICE LANDSCAPING
Fall & Winter Landscapes spring seeding, and as such, should germinate at the same time or sooner than many weed seeds. Grass seed will germinate in the dark while most weed seeds need sunlight. So, seeding before you mulch your leaves on the lawn will be very beneficial.
Terry Childs President
613-382-1207 or 1-866-382-1207 www.natureswaylandscaping.net
Should I remove the leaves from my lawn? Yes, but if possible, mulch them as much as possible to allow the mulched leaves to fall between the grass blades. This will provide a decent amount of organic matter for the soil and will help reduce the weed count in the spring. When is the latest I can fertilize my lawn? Natural fertilizers are broken down by microbes in the soil, so anytime the microbes and the plants are taking in nutrients is a good time to fertilize. The fall fertilization is really the first fertilization of the spring, so anytime you can safely walk on the grass is a good time to fertilize. Will my grass seed that I have just applied germinate this fall? Grass seed typically needs a temperature above 15 degrees to germinate, so like your fertilization, a late fall seeding is your first
Should I remove the leaves from my garden beds? If you can leave the leaves on the beds, you will be providing a little extra protection to the perennials in your beds as they will act as a mulch. These leaves will also provide an overwintering home for many beneficial insects. However, you will probably want to remove the leaves in the spring. Should I cut back the perennials in my garden? No, many overwintering pollinators will use the “dead” stalks etc., as a home for the winter. Many perennials will have seed heads well into the season and provide a food source. Plus, the leaves from the perennials will house many beneficial insects. Can I plant in the fall? If the ground isn’t frozen, yes, you can plant trees and shrubs. When planting, always remember to dig the hole twice as wide as the ball of the plant. Don’t dig it any deeper, as the root ball must sit soundly on existing soil. If planting an individual plant, backfill with a combination of native soil that you took out of the hole, compost and new soil. Make sure these newly planted shrubs and trees are watered when you plant, as this will ensure there are no air pockets. Watering is not
needed for the plants as they will be dormant, except Evergreens. Evergreens will need to be watered until the ground is frozen. Vegetable Gardens Some plants may still be growing, but many others are ready to have their remains removed. It is important to remove these plants, so you are not overwintering any diseases, fungal infections etc. in the dead foliage. This is also a good time to add compost to the top of the soil and allow winter to help incorporate it into the soil. Preparing for Spring Take the time to realistically look at what you want and what you are prepared to do or hire others to do. Perennial beds can give months of pleasure but need maintenance. Annual beds will provide a flower show all season, but again, will need to be maintained. Do you have areas of your lawn that never grows grass? Perhaps a ground cover will work better. Is your deck showing signs of age? Perhaps next year is the time to replace or reface it. But, before you do ask a few questions: • Is it in the right location? • Does it suit our family needs? • Is it too big? Small? Are you thinking of an addition to your house? Perhaps this is the time to look at outside rooms. We can construct an outside kitchen with built in barbecues, sinks, refrigerators, and yes, even televisions and music speakers! And, of course, don’t forget outdoor lighting! ReFINEdKINGSTON

Cushions… the final touch to the design aesthetic of your room Styled and written by Heather Waugh Pitts Photos David Muir

n the late 90s, walking up Yonge St. Toronto, I walked into Putti Fine Furnishings, a Europeanstyle home décor boutique. The shop owner had a display of antique vintage textile pillows brought over from France — a plethora of cushions made from tapestries and velvets, and ornately trimmed. The experience was transformative in how I imagined cushions could be. They were jewels… pieces of art.

Functional and beautiful, cushions can update and change the way a space feels. As well as offering layering, texture, colour, soul, luxury and comfort, pillows can be an extension of your art collection. Constructing an art pillow is a multistep process, as pillows themselves are transformative. I want to discuss just
how far you can go to produce a work of art. When it comes to shapes, everything needs to be taken into consideration, from geometric form to the outline of the image itself. The cover may have original artwork that is hand screened, or photographed and digitally printed. The textiles may be vintage, loomed, hand hooked, made of pure silks, velvets, mohair, linens or wool. The back

2 may be a mirror image, or one of the textiles mentioned. The pillows may be hand cut, lined and seam serged. They can also be zippered and tagged with an original logo design. There are various embellishments that can be added, such as playful pompoms, brush fringe, tassels, braid, lace and cord trim. The cushion insert expense will depend upon the ratio of down to feather — from a mainstream Ikea $15 range to $100 (plus). The range in pillows from mainstream to handmade luxury cushions is vast‌ adding either just a fun burst of colour or a unique piece of art. Scatter your cushions on daybeds, beds, sofas, chairs, or stack on the floor for lounging.
