FIBERSHED Fashion Gala 2013

THE EVENT

THE LOCAL MILLING SOLUTION

The Fibershed Fashion Gala explores the Golden Era of California and reimagines a new Golden Era for fashion, demonstrating the beauty cultivated on the California landscape. Held at a private 1930’s estate in Woodside, California, the event presents a 30’s themed runway show with garments designed by talented local designers and made entirely of wool and organic cotton grown on local farms, and dyed with locally grown natural dyes.

Since January 2013, Fibershed has been working with researchers from UC Davis and UC Berkeley to develop an economic feasibility study for a California wool mill. The 2013 Fibershed Fashion Gala will be supporting the third and final phase of this feasibility study. The purpose of the study is to develop an economic and business framework for building a sustainably sourced local textile economy in Northern California, as well as establishing a local cooperatively owned mill that could process at least one million pounds of raw fiber annually.

Taking place October 13, 2013, the Fashion Gala will also include a live auction, and a shopping marketplace for sustainable goods and services from local Bay Area businesses. In addition to regionally sourced fashions, guests will enjoy organic appetizers and locally distilled beverages derived from our very own bioregion.

For those who would like to be a special part of this event, we have designed a variety of tax-deductible sponsorship opportunities, described on the following page. If you would like further information, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Our work in this third phase of the feasibility study is to calculate the demand for local fiber, prototype California grown cloth, and assess the environmental impact of that cloth with a ‘soil to skin’ full life cycle analysis (LCA). Using 100 percent California wool, we plan to produce three different prototype fabrics defined by our demand calculations. Our LCA will be the first soil-based life cycle assessment quantifying the greenhouse gas emissions from producing and processing sheep’s wool into garments. To assess the potential for greenhouse gas savings through regionally farmed and processed wool garments, we will also estimate emissions from standard garment production (e.g., conventional wool, organic cotton, conventional cotton). This ‘soil-to-skin’ LCA will set a new standard for how greenhouse gas emissions are measured in garment production, by including land and animal management.

THE TRUE COST OF CLOTHES

ABOUT US

There are many compelling reasons for a return to locally made, natural fiber clothing, including environmental and social costs to current industry practices that most of us are not aware of.

Beginning with a personal commitment to wear locally farmed and crafted clothes, Fibershed founder Rebecca Burgess started a global movement.

An estimated 17 to 20% of industrial water pollution comes from textile dyeing and treatment and an estimated 8,000 synthetic chemicals are used throughout the world to turn raw materials into textiles, many of which will be released into freshwater sources. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the textile industry is the fifth largest contributor to CO2 emissions in the United States. Synthetic garment fibers, released through laundry-based sewage runoff, accounted for the greatest share of plastic pollutants on the world’s beaches in a 2011 study. As aging sheep ranchers (70% are over 55) look toward retirement, young would-be farmers can’t afford to raise sheep. The challenge is that rising land values, diesel prices, and the cost of feed have risen disproportionately to sheep rancher and farmer income. California produces 3.1 million pounds of wool annually, making it the largest wool producing state in the United States. Northern California’s milling capacity is only 10,000 lbs. per year, processing only three-tenths of one percent of total wool production. California’s lack of wool processing has prevented consumers from accessing local wool. At the same time, clothing manufacturers, such as The North Face, Patagonia, Ibex, SmartWool, and smallscale designers, are requesting to work with domestically grown wool textiles.

In just two years, Fibershed has grown from a handful of farmers and designers into an organization with 18 affiliate organizations around the globe. Fibershed’s mission is to develop, support and promote local natural fiber systems. We are decentralizing textile manufacturing to empower regional economies and enable small and midscale farmers and artisans to engage directly with the marketplace.

Thank You for Supporting Our Local Textile Economy

This regionally based model includes publishing research and data on innovation for milling facilities, developing education on best management practices for soil carbon sequestration, and providing public education on the social and environmental benefits of locally produced garments. Our outcomes include: innovation in natural fiber processing, increased local jobs and farm income, helping consumers make better textile choices, and driving demand for healthier fiber systems. Visit fibershed.com for more information about our non-profit organization.
