(Re)Fresh
September 2008
Hello! It’s September already and I am struggling to fathom where time is flying to! One thing is for sure, we have to make every second on this earth count because time waits for no one! Even minutes spent stuck in traffic is time that we will never get back. I’ve started taking photographs, which I am sure must have some fellow road users baffled! I’ve been inspired by the concept of the ‘ Photo Walk’ (read about this below) and I have to say that I did noticed beautiful, interesting, and sometimes funny details, on my way home I never really took in before. This month’s edition encourages you to live life to the fullest by living the healthiest one possible, making a difference where you can and appreciating the small things that make life great. And the next time you are stuck in traffic, roll down your window and snap a few pictures for the ‘(Re)Fresh Photo Drive Home’ (only if it’s safe to do so), post them on the (Re)Fresh facebook group to show everyone how beautiful your trip home is! Here’s to capturing a fabulous month! Cheers

The Photo Walk This collective photography project, held in August, saw photographers around the world meeting up in their respective towns. In Cape Town photographers worked their way through the Bo-Kaap and down into Adderly Street, along the way capturing colourful, intricate details of the city one often misses in the hassle bustle of our busy lives. “I found great locations...places I probably wouldn’t have found had I not been looking through the lens,” said Mitch Wong Ho of I DO Photography. He said that although street photography was not one of his specialties, it was an opportunity to interact with other photographers and refine his skills. To see Mitch’s work, visit www.idophotography.co.za/blog/ The project was initiated to promote photography guru Scott Kelby’s digital photography book, The Lightroom 2. The real prize is the collection of photographs available on Flickr that remind us how beautiful our city is and allow us to explore others. Saving Open Spaces In the March of (Re)Fresh readers were informed about the Sea Front for All (SEAFA) petition to save Sea Point Promenade from development. Yes, that’s right, that lovely walkway along the coast frequented by runners, walkers, mothers pushing prams and little kids on bikes. It is encouraging to hear that there has been positive investment in the area with the Pavilion Park, situated next to the Sea Point Pavilion, having been restored thanks to donations from the Rotary Club. You only have to go there
Simple Savings Most of us are guilty of leaving change lying around, letting fall under car seats, vacuuming it up and losing it without much thought. This is money we are literally throwing away.

Good health is Priceless But it shouldn’t cost a fortune! Are you about to buy takeaways because you think it is a filling, cheap and fast? While it may seem like a great idea, it’s a costly one. Of course the real cost is the damage to your body, particularly your heart. It is Heart Awareness Month so what better time to get into a healthy habit! "It takes a few minutes of your time to make a healthy whole-wheat sandwich to take to work," says Shân BiesmanSimons, Director of Nutrition and Education at the Heart and Stroke Foundation SA (HSFSA) "and it costs a lot less than greasy fast food lunches." Heart Mark Manager, Alicia van Onselen, says that Heart Mark holders price their products competitively and in this way assist in providing the public with healthy and affordable foods. So there goes that excuse that that healthy eating is expensive eating. Biesman-Simons recommends purchasing products endorsed with the Heart Mark. These products are lower in fat, sodium, cholesterol, added sugar and where applicable, higher in fibre. In short, really good for you!
