China's 5G: Unity or Disunity By Briana Lu China is absolutely killing it in its advancements in fth generation cellular network technology — otherwise known as 5G network technology. This great feat brings about incredible change and achievements for the country, but is that all there is to the story? The answer is no. Much like all great actions caught in a web of international politics, the country’s progress bring about detriment on a global scale. Fifth generation cellular network technology, or 5G network technology, is the latest iteration of cellular technology. The rst ever launch of this technology was on November 1st, 2019, by and in China. The purpose of these networks is to increase the speed and responsiveness of wireless networks and allow larger quantities of data to be transmitted over wireless systems; this was all made possible with a larger bandwidth and a form of advanced antenna technology. There is no doubt that 5G networks are a great leap in technological, innovational, and economical potential for China. The advancements made in fth-generation networks is estimated to earn revenue in the trillions, greatly improve the country's already strong economy, generate 8 million jobs, inspire more innovation in the technological market, and propel China

forwards in an economical and technological arms race. But how far can the bene ts of 5G technology reach? If one were to analyze the e ects of 5G on a global scale, serious and concerning tensions between the United States and China begin to come to light. China’s 5G networks throw the country ahead in the US-China race for tech dominance. Arthur L. Herman, an American historian and senior fellow of the Hudson Institute, voices the country’s insecurities and goals in the matter, stating,
“If we concede leadership to the Chinese, they will set the standards as this technology becomes indispensable.” Herman also urges that the US adopt a four-pronged plan against China in the race for tech dominance. The plan involves the launch of “a new model for expanding access to spectrum through a wholesale market”, the need to “develop a truly global 5G standard to compete with China”, and the importance of “sound[ing] the quantum and post-quantum alarm”.
advancement, the future brings even more divergence and dissension to international relations. The main purpose of these networks and technologies is, and has always been, national and international communication. So, in the end, the question we all should be asking is: Why are they driving us further apart?
However, perhaps the most worrisome of the four prongs is the rst, stating the necessity to “expose the well-founded allegations about Huawei as a corporate wrongdoer and a tool of the Chinese military and intelligence agencies” and to “make allies understand that if they aren’t willing to work with us in this vital area, we aren’t going to feel compelled to support them where it counts for them.” This prong has already began to spring into action in the form of US citizens boycotting Huawei and claiming the company’s risk to national security. International security risks are being thrown into jeopardy due to the advancements China has made with 5G networks, triggering a response from the United States who fears the loss of tech dominance. As technology grows to become more and more crucial to human society and political matters complicate with every

Climate Strike: Is it working? By Catherine Lim On September 27th, 2019, over 800 000 people rallied to “Canada's largest climate strike ever” to urge political powers to take action on climate change – a movement sparked by Swedish student activist, Greta Thunberg, and taken up by students all over the world. Contrary to the multitude of previous strikes and movements regarding the environment, this strike is stunning in its simplicity: to take notice of the facts and to do anything we can to alleviate the dire state that the world is in. Signs with targets that range from recycling to global warming are paraded through the streets; the diversity of messages in the same movement stems from the culmination of decades of reckless use of resources with little regard for the consequences.
“We deserve a safe future and we demand a safe future. Is that really too much to ask?” Thunberg appealed to the thousands attending a Global Climate Strike in New York, including the multitude of students who had skipped school to attend the rally. Strikers have taken to social media, trending hashtags such as #climatestrike, #ClimateEmergency, and #FridaysforFuture in solidarity with fellow supporters.
Thunberg has met privately with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, who, despite his continuous professions of supporting the cause, has been called out for doing very little action to back up his statements. The demand for attention from political leaders concerning climate change has not been disregarded, but the call for action has yet to be fully embraced.

What Can You Do?
No matter how much political powers need to take action, change starts with you.
No Plastic Bags When you buy produce, you can simply put the fruit or vegetable into your basket; there is really no need for the extra layer of plastic.
14
Buy Bigger Bottles It is hard to find shampoo and soap in glass bottles. However, this does not mean that you can't be environmentally friendly in that sector. Buy bigger bottles so that you would not need to buy shampoo that often; this means less plastic!
U se Gl a ss Use glass containers whenever you can. Glass is much more environmentally friendly. Also, glass does not release microplastics into your food, keeping you a lot healthier.

Peanut Butter Allergy Cure By Stanford Guo
Although I personally have not been diagnosed with a peanut allergy, 0.6% of US citizens have. It may seem like a small percentage, but, in reality, it is 2 million people who live in fear of an allergic reaction caused by peanuts. First, let us clear up some common misconceptions about peanuts. Peanuts are legumes, similar to lentils and soybeans, and not tree nuts; this means that if one is allergic to cashews or walnuts, they are not necessarily allergic to peanuts. Another common misconception is that people who are diagnosed with peanut allergies have them for life. The truth is, 20% of those who are allergic to peanuts eventually grow out of them. That aside, we can finally delve deeper into what a peanut allergy may entail. Peanut allergies can include symptoms anywhere from swelling in the throat to anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction that may even result in death. Luckily, there have been many efforts to prevent such unpleasant reactions. Currently, many schools have created peanut-free zones or banned peanuts altogether. However, researchers discovered that these zones actually have little to no effect on preventing allergies;vthis is because, in most cases,
Are you allergic to peanuts? If yes, do you think you will try out this new cure?
in order for an allergic reaction to commence, the substance containing the peanuts must be directly eaten or touched. There is little evidence to support the idea that patients get sick from inhaling peanut molecules. Nevertheless, there are many ways to help prevent peanut allergies. Touching a peanut-based substance can be easily avoided by taking caution and making smart decisions. Frequent hand-washing and the use of hand sanitizer and can also help prevent unwanted reactions, such as rashes. In the case that an allergic reaction does occur, it is always a smart idea to carry around an EpiPen. EpiPens are easy to use and can help to subdue or postpone major reactions. There is an easy rhyme to help one remember how to use an EpiPen: “Blue to the sky, orange to the thigh!” The colors mentioned correlate with the blue tip and orange tip of the EpiPen respectively. You might need to remember this save to someone's life! There is another important issue that hasn’t been mentioned yet: the cure to peanut allergies. A study conducted in Seattle produced promising results that there may be a “cure” to peanut allergies. The study

comprised of 372 children who were given extremely tiny doses of peanuts in order to build up their immune systems through a process called immunotherapy. After 6 months of doses, the children were able to digest around 1 peanut daily. After a year, they were able to consume the equivalent of 2 peanuts, “with no more than mild symptoms” according to Healthline. However, this treatment did not work for everybody. Throughout the study, there were many injections of epinephrine in order to stabilize severe reactions. Currently, the FDA is still deliberate on whether or not to approve this “cure” due to the fact
that the research team was unable to speculate the severity of some reactions. Many people suffer from peanut allergies around the world and the demand for a cure has risen due to the magnitude of allergy symptoms. When a cure is finally developed, there will be a large demand for it. Until then, the best one can do is to take care of their personal hygiene and always be prepared!

These are tiny blue microplastics under a microscope. I took water from a large plastic water bottle and, with the help of my science teacher, magnified it to the point in which you would be able to see the tiny plastic particles. It's ironic how a plastic water bottle advertised as "the highest quality" would contain particles that could cause things like cancer and Parkinson's Disease. By Cindy Hu More in future issues!

Book Review: No Friend But The Mountains By Catherine Lim
In fear of detainment for his journalism, Behrouz Boochani, an IranianKurdish journalist, ees from Iran to Australia in search of asylum. He is turned away and shipped to an o shore detention center in Papua New Guinea run by the Australian government. For ve years, Boochani painstakingly types out his story and the stories of his neighbors on a mobile phone –accounts of those who have lost hope and resorted to selfmutilation– in thousands of Whatsapp messages sent to his translator, Moones Mansoubi. "One of the main questions that the people in Manus Island ask — and it is my question for years and years — that what is my crime? What is my crime?" No Friend But The Mountains is not simply an autobiographical novel: it is a rst-hand account of someone who has been subjected to the darkest truths of the Western world and survived. This book is a harsh critique of the way that politics has surpassed basic human compassion at Western borders. With its captivating prose and stunning poetry, No Friend But The Mountains can take its place amongst the elite of prison literature and dissident literature

Bilingualism By Nora Zhu How did you learn to speak? You connected sounds with objects and feelings. Through reinforcement, you gradually learned to reproduce those sounds and form words. But what happens when you can’t make those connections in the rst place?
Nora Zhu recently won BC speech provincials. The speech on the right side of the page was Nora's awardwinning speech on Bilingualism.

Let’s take a monolingual kindergartener...we can call her Emma. To Emma, the words “Ornament” and “Omelette” are di erent. Now let’s look at me, a bilingual. To 5-yearold me, the words “Ornament” and “Omelette” were the same. I thought they were both “ornament”. I never made the distinction between the two because in my world, 装饰(ornaments) is what you hang on Christmas trees, and 煎 蛋 (fried eggs) was my favorite food. So, when my teacher announced that the cafeteria was serving Omelettes, I was terri ed that they would serve colorful, glass balls for lunch. Similar cases happened with other words. Sword became Thorn. Drawer became door, and my kindergarten teacher, Ms. Caroll, well, I called her Ms. Carrots. Bilingualism is a tremendous ability for people to have but being raised bilingual is a challenge. When children grow up hearing not one but two languages, they face enormous barriers in education and development that society has not yet found a solution to. My name is Nora Zhu, and this, ladies and gentlemen is the overlooked struggle of bilingualism.
Today, we are facing a population more diverse than ever before. According to Statistics Canada, 1 in 5 Canadians are foreign-born. Add their 2nd generation children, and bilinguals take up over a quarter of Canada’s population. Because of this, we are starting to see a rise in simultaneous bilingualism in our population. But first, what exactly is simultaneous bilingualism? There are two types of bilingualism. Sequential bilingualism occurs when someone already has a base language in which they function and think, then builds upon that by learning a second language. In contrast, simultaneous bilingualism occurs when a child is not raised in an environment with one dominant language but instead comes to understand what language is by being exposed to more than one at the same time. So how does simultaneous bilingualism impact a child’s language development? First, young children struggle with differentiating between the languages they are exposed to. With no base language to think in, a phenomenon called code-mixing becomes common. This is where a child might combine words from two languages to make their own, or mix up languages while speaking or writing.
A Princeton Professor conducted a study on 5,262 2nd generation children whose parents both spoke the same home language. Out of these children, only 30% said they were fluent in both languages. It’s easy to blame bilingualism for these issues. But the real problem is that simultaneous bilingualism is being overlooked and poorly managed in society. How does this problem come to be? First, for many children who are simultaneously bilingual, it starts at school. Think for a moment, you have a kid, a 2nd grader. She has a hard time following directions and her reading ability is below average. Her teacher notices and recommends she be tested for a learning disability, and her tests show she is in the bottom 10% for reading, writing, and speaking. Mistakenly, her teachers think she has a learning disability. Then we come to the 2nd part of this problem: The treatment. The most common misdiagnosis for learning disabilities in bilingual children is ADHD. The harms of misdiagnosis are vast. First, children go on medications that are not meant for them. Ritalin or Adderall, common medications for ADHD, which can have serious side effects.
25
In addition to pills, schools force students to have assisted learning blocks that replace important classes. Such course schedules remove opportunities for growth. Moreover, students are often encouraged to drop their home language. As a result, we are putting these children at a further disadvantage. The last part of this problem is the impact on the child’s mental wellbeing. When a child constantly feels like they are underperforming, has a worried parent and is being tested for a learning disability, they feel the stress of that too. These children can recognize that bilingualism sets them apart from their classmates and holds them back, causing self-hatred and resentment of their language and culture. Loss of culture is already so prevalent in our world, that to have children reject their culture because of resentment is a devastating waste we can’t afford. I have come up with a 3-part solution to help bilingual children, and teach them to embrace simultaneous bilingualism. The first solution is Early Awareness. We need better training for specialists to differentiate between the symptoms of simultaneous bilingualism and a learning disability. The second solution is to create a Positive Academic Environment. Schools should encourage
26
code mixing as a learning tool instead of shaming it. When a child doesn’t know a word in English, they should be allowed to use their home language as a substitute, which allows the teacher to identify holes in a child’s vocabulary and help them improve. The 3rd solution is to provide Resources in the community. Libraries and bookstores should offer common children’s books in 2 languages, to allow a child to read a book in both their home language and English. Together, we should embrace the advantages but prepare for the challenges of a diverse community. By following the 3 part solution I laid out, I am convinced that we can take one more step towards our shared multicultural future. When I was a child, I struggled with balancing 2 languages at once, and sometimes even resented it. But now, here I am, feeling nothing but grateful, that I have the power to connect with people in both the country I call home and the country that my ancestors called home. Now, I’m watching my little brother go through the same struggle I did, and I want him, and other children like him, to have the resources I didn’t. I want to give all kids regardless of their background the chance to learn, to grow and to thrive.
Feminism Misinterpretation By Cindy Hu
In the 19th century, the su rage movement jumpstarted the feminist movement; this was followed by numerous debates on gender equality, the role of women in society, and the supposed pay gap. Though many feminists claim that feminism means equality for both men and women, the feminist movement often exclude men in the ght for equality. Firstly, the very word “feminism” is confusing. The de nition of feminism is the equality between men and women; however, many interpret it as in the ght for women's rights. The word itself comes from the latin word fēmina, meaning female. Would it not be more “equal” to call feminism the ght for gender equality instead? On the topic of gender equality, statistics used to support women's rights are gained through con rmation bias, the tendency to interpret evidence in a way that con rms one’s beliefs. One prime example of such is the gender pay gap. Most have probably heard of the often cited statistic “that a woman earns 80 cents for every dollar earned by a man.'' Though it is widely believed that this is the di erence in pay between two people in the same job, it is actually taken from the national annual earnings of men and women in the American economy. Statistically speaking, more men are in jobs involving STEM and business, jobs that generally pay more than common female jobs, such as teaching and retail. Of course, females should be encouraged to go into STEM and entrepreneurship; however, at the moment, the reality is that some are still vying for more traditional female jobs. The commonly cited statistic in pay gap fails to take into account these di erences.

Christmas Gifts By Andy Liao
Christmas is a sacred holiday that has been celebrated worldwide for Millenials. The holiday originated from the birth of Jesus Christ, but has evolved into a holiday devoid of Christian elements and celebrated by Christians and nonChristians alike. On every December 25th, families and friends would come together to celebrate the end of a year and welcome the beginning of a new one. One tradition that distinguishes Christmas from other holidays is the act of exchanging gifts; this tradition has been passed down for centuries and was popularized by famous works such as A Christmas Carol and The Gift of the Maggie. Such stories reminds us of the importance of expressing our love and gratitude towards our friends, families, and loved ones who have selflessly sacrificed themselves to benefit our lives. The meaning and significance of a gift goes beyond the object itself, and the purchase of the gift requires thoughtful consideration. Giving gifts are clearly a significant gesture. What are you going to 34 purchase this Christmas?
Chocolate is the most popular sweet worldwide during holidays such as Easter, Valentine’s Day and Christmas. Chocolate represents your care and love for the other person and its sweet taste makes it irresistible. Chocolate would be best if it is gifted to someone you are less familiar with.
If you are having trouble thinking of a gift, you can never go wrong with a book. Whether it is a memoir, fiction, or fantasy, the knowledge within a book could have life-changing implications on the individual.
Regardless of what gift you have decided to pick for that special someone, remember that a gift is merely a representation of your gratitude and love towards that special individual. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
