Founded in 1608 as the Seat of the Imperial Mughal Viceroys of Bengal and known the world over for centuries for its fine silk and muslin, Dhaka as the capital of Bangladesh has grown into busy city of about four mi lion people. Attractions of Dhaka Mosques: Dhaka has several hundred mosques. Prominent are Baitull MukarramNational Mosque, the seven Domed Mosque (17th century), Star Mosque (18th century), Chawkbazar Mosque and Huseni Dalan Mosque. Hindu Temples: Dhakeshwari Temple (11th Century), Ramkrishna Mission. Churches: Armenian Church (1781 A.D.) St. Mary's Cathedral at Ramna, Church of Bangladesh or former Holy Rosary Church (1677A.D.) at Tejgaon. National Memorial: It locates at Savar, 35, km. from Dhaka city. The memorial designed by architect Moinul Hossain is dedicated to the sacred memory of the millions of unknown martyrs of the war of liberation. Lalbagh Fort: It was built in 1678 A.D. by Prince Mohammad Azam, son of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The fort was the scene of bloody battle during the first war of independence (1857) when 260 sepoys stationed here backed by the people revolted against British forces. Outstanding among the monuments of the Lalbagh are the tomb of Pari Bibi, Lalbagh Mosque, Audience Hall and Hammam of Nawab Shaista Khan now housing a museum. 1857 Memorial: (Bahadur Shah Park) Built to commemorate the martyrs of the first liberation war (1857-59) against British rule. It was here that the revolting sepoys and their civil compatriots were publicly hanged. Bangabandhu Memorial Museum: The residence of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi has been turned into a museum. It contains rare collection of personal effects and photographs of his lifetime. Mukti Juddha Museum: Situated at Segun Bagicha area of the city the museum contains rare photographs of Liberation war and items used by the freedom fighters during the period. Ahsan Manzil Museum: On the bank of the river Buriganga in Dhaka the pink majestic Ahsan Manzil has been renovated and turned into a museum recently. It is an example of the nation’s rich cultural heritage. It was the home of the Nawab of Dhaka and a silent spectator to many events. The renovated Ahsan Manzil is a monument of immense historical beauty. It has 31 rooms with a huge dome atop which can be seen from miles around. It now has 23 galleries displaying portraits, furniture and household articles and utensils used by the Nawab. Curzon Hall: Beautiful architectural building named after Lord Curzon. It now houses the Science Faculty of Dhaka University. Old High Court Building: Originally built as the residence of the British Governor, it illustrates a happy blend of European and Mughal architecture. Dhaka Zoo: Popularly known as Mirpur Zoo. Colorful and attractive collections of different local and foreign species of animals and birds including the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger are available here.
National Museum: Located at the central point of the city, the museum contains a large number of interesting collections including sculptures and paintings of the Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim periods. Botanical Garden: Built on an area of 205 acres of land at Mirpur and adjacent to Dhaka Zoo. One can have a look at the zoo and the botanical garden in one trip. SWOT analysis Strength Lots of visitors are from inbound so this is easy to communicate. Bangladesh is a small country so it is easy to move from one district to another. The cost of living is not too high. Weakness Lack of government support. Tourism industry lacks marketing professionalism, which is severely crippling the industry’s inbound tourism growth. Lack of knowledge about the demand, supply and competitors in the Bangladeshi tourism business. Opportunities Inbound people are interested visit foreign countries. Bangladesh is a fairly new and rarely visited inbound tourist destination, which can attract an adventure searching tourist market. Threats Political vulnerable may be hamper tourism business. Climate change throughout a year so people are little uninterested to visit that season. Global warming can affect the inbound travel market in Bangladesh, as the country is one of the 10 countries most vulnerable to a rise in sea level. Tourism Word Associations: The adjectives that is most commonly associated with the experience of visiting Bangladesh. Bangladesh is most associated with the positive attributes of fascinating (42.0%), exciting (31.0%). Although some view the visit in Bangladesh are stressful (15.0%) and Risky (12.5%). Source: Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation The table shows that the number of tourist arrivals in Bangladesh has increased to 271,270 in 2004 from 113,242 in 1991 which shows an average annual growth rate of 7.79 percent. The tourist arrivals increased in 2003 by 17.98 percent and 10.94 percent in 2004 over its preceding year. In general, the statistics shows a very good and positive trend.

On the other hand Chart reveals that increase promotional activities to create awareness about the tourist spots of Bangladesh and increase security are ranked first by 29.4% of the foreigners respectively that are followed by improvement of hotel and transportation systems (14.7%) religious and cultural liberty (11.8%) , ensuring neatness (8.8%) and create tourist friendly environment (5.9%).
Findings: Security: Security emerged as the strongest factor in terms of degree and magnitude affecting the tour intention of Bangladeshi tourists. The security issue is significant as people go for tour for pleasure and amusement. The amusement or entertainment is not possible if the place is not secured. It is thus an important aspect to be considered by the government of Bangladesh to ensure the security in various tourist spots in order to gain the tourist attention and acceptance. Poor quality management: provided quality of services are not sufficient. Visitors expect the service elements to demand their expectations with full satisfactions. Regardless of the type of tourism management tool used, it does not contain enough local identity of the destination. Lack of promotional activity: Bangladesh, although, having the longest sea beach of the world at Coxes Bazar, the largest mangrove forest, the Sundarban, attractive hilly areas in Hill Tracts cannot attract sufficient number of foreign tourists. Multifaceted problems are causing the frustrating scenario of the country’s tourism sector. In Bangladesh, insufficient infrastructural development at various tourist spots, lack of proper facilities for the tourists, scarcity of skilled and professional tour service providers and poor promotional programs are responsible for the lower response from the foreign tourists. Dissatisfaction of hotel and transportation system: Many resorts and hotels were simply developed in locations with natural beauty, favorable climates, and easy transportation access. In this case the local transport and hotels are not providing satisfactory services. Therefore air transportation can play a vital role for tour sector, in this case Bangladesh has not sufficient airport. Shopping facility: tourist has naturally some interest in local product. They want buy some local product. But in this case Bangladesh has not proper organized shopping mall. And sometime we see that seller get some extra profit from outbound tourist. They are not showing proper loyalty. Food: naturally habit of consuming are vary from country to country. And in Bangladesh it varies in region. Maximum time restaurants are not able to serve the right food for the
customer. Actually they are not conscious about the menu of food. So outbound tourist are not satisfied on choosing food. Language: language is one of the great barriers to improve tourism sector in Bangladesh. And local tour operator also cares less at this segment. Language is one of the main ways to express to understand something and we are very much week in English. In that case outbound tourist are not eligible make better communication. Recommendation: As tourism is one of the main possible sectors to enhance the image of Bangladesh. So, to improve the tourism of Bangladesh the following steps should be implemented. Improvement in the security systems of the tourist spots is given the most importance by both the native people and foreigners. Improvement in the hotel and transportation systems should given priority for the improvement of the tourism sector. One of the main obstacles for the improvement of tourism sector is that the foreigners are not aware of the tourist spots of Bangladesh. Promotional activities can improve the situation by creating awareness of the tourist spots. For this reason, like India, internationally famous celebrities and spokespersons should use in the promotional campaign. Cricket World Cup 2011 will be inaugurated in Bangladesh. T-20 will be held in Bangladesh in 2013. On these occasions, many foreigners will come here. We should utilize these opportunities and these can be the platform for promoting the tourism of Bangladesh. The website of the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation should be developed and up to date. As the website promotes the slogan of “discover Beautiful Bangladesh”, the information provided in this website is not sufficient. It should narrate all the important information as well the low cost of travelling in Bangladesh. Having an international airport in Cox’s Bazar will ensure that foreigners can fly there directly without having to go through Dhaka. Besides, hotel and transportation systems should be developed to meet the taste and income of every tourist. Cox’s Bazar can be branded as other international cities such as like Bali, Goa etc. Separate entertainment policy may be formulated so that a strong PPP can be implemented. Ecotourism in Bangladesh should be introduced. Ecotourism refers to tourism that is based on the natural environment but that seeks to minimise the harmful impacts and better still, seeks to promote conservation. It focuses on local cultures, wilderness adventures; personal growth and learning new ways live on our vulnerable planet. Responsible ecotourism includes programs that minimize the adverse effects of traditional tourism on the natural environment, and enhance the cultural integrity of local people. Therefore, in addition to evaluating environmental and cultural factors, initiatives by hospitality providers to promote recycling, energy efficiency, water re-use, and the creation of economic opportunities for local communities are an integral part of ecotourism. Make some training session for our local guide. Participate in international tourism fairs. Govt support to the private tour operators is necessary for the development of this sector. Conclusion The government of Bangladesh has declared tourism is one of the thrust sectors of the country. The indigenous culture, climate, geographic location, currency exchange rate, price of essential commodities and services; and price and convenience of lodging and quality of
food are extremely favorable for developing an organized and professional tourism industry in Bangladesh that can contribute a substantial amount of money each year in the national exchequer. It will also generate huge employment opportunities that will ultimately help develop country’s overall economic environment. Although the tourism industry has the potentials of contributing a substantially large amount of money in national economy, the government’s initiative, people’s perception on the tourism, and country’s culture hinder the development of the sector. The political instability, strike, blockage and ban in different issues and the emergence of Political and religious rebellions and terrorism are to be considered as major barriers of emerging tourism industry in Bangladesh. Infrastructures like technological, legal, financial, human resources are also to be considered as important influence in Bangladesh.
