college and sailed as crew, still return today with their families and are sailing on their own boats.

Do you know… • we attract over 5000 visitors annually to the island exclusive to the regatta? • regatta visitors spend over 35,000 nights in total on the island annually? • the 2016 event represented captains from 37+ different nations?

As this event has grown, the people involved, the participants, the volunteers and the island itself has grown with it. We’re extremely fortunate to have had such great success; we owe this success to the continued support and patronage of the people I’d like to call our extended family.

• regatta visitors spend over 7 million USD on accommodations annually? • regatta visitors spend over 5 million USD on food, drinks and transportation annually? • we are the largest warm water regatta in the world?

I hope this year’s event will meet all the expectations of our long term friends and family, that we impress new friends and get them hooked, keeping the legacy of this event alive for generations to come.

• the regatta grew from 12 registrations in 1980 to over 200 boats last year? • the Gill Commodore’s Cup, the warm-up race of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, is

SXM FUN & FAST FACTS ST. MAARTEN & ST. MARTIN: ONE ISLAND, TWO COUNTRIES Christopher Columbus sailed by St. Maarten in 1493 and although never set foot on land, named it and claimed it for Spain; however the Dutch wanted the island and eventually pushed out Spain only to discover a French settlement had been established.

LEGEND HAS IT A DUTCHMAN AND A FRENCHMAN, BOTH INTOXICATED, SETTLED THE LAND DISPUTE

BY MEETING AND WALKING IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS UNTIL THEY MET BACK TOGETHER TO MARK OFF THEIR COUNTRY’S BOUNDARIES.

BEFORE THEY STARTED, THE FRENCHMAN DRANK WINE WHILE THE DUTCHMAN DRANK THE STRONGER DUTCH GIN, ALLOWING THE

FRENCHMAN TO COVER MORE TERRITORY AND CLAIM MORE LAND!

Today there is no physical border or border controls thanks to the 1648 Treaty of Concordia which allows both countries to remain peaceful neighbors and share 37 white sandy beaches!

SXM is located at 18N, 63W and is approximately 144 miles southeast of Puerto Rico. The land mass of St. Maarten/St. Martin is only 37 square miles; the North side territory is referred to as the “French side” and the Southern half is referred to as the “Dutch side.”

On October 10th, 2010 (also known as 10-10-10), Dutch St. Maarten officially became “Country St. Maarten” and is one of the four constituent countries which form the Kingdom of the Netherlands. WHILE ST. MAARTEN IS PART OF THE DUTCH KINGDOM, MORE PEOPLE SPEAK ENGLISH THAN DUTCH. THE FRENCH SIDE IS CONSIDERED “FRANCE.” ISLAND WIDE, PEOPLE SPEAK ENGLISH, DUTCH, FRENCH, PAPIAMENTO AMONGST MANY OTHER LANGUAGES. THE DUTCH SIDE’S POPULATION IS APPROXIMATELY 39,000 WHILE THE FRENCH SIDE HAS APPROXIMATELY 35,000 RESIDENTS.

In Dutch St. Maarten you can pay with two different currency units; the US Dollar and the Netherlands Antillean Guilder, (Naf). In French St. Martin the currency is the Euro, but the US Dollar is also accepted. The Dutch side uses 110v (60Hz) while the French side is primarily 220v (50Hz). Having a completely duty-free port, St. Maarten serves as a center of trade for neighboring islands and visiting yachts. The island’s marine sector has grown throughout the years and is currently recognized as the yachting capital of the Caribbean, mainly due to the large amount of yacht support and marine trade businesses as well as the largest regatta in the Caribbean!

The island boasts the most amazing sunsets, which can be seen every day between 5.35pm and 6.52pm and is at GMT-4 hours Atlantic time, 1 hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time.

Princess Juliana International Airport has a runway of 7,659 feet, which makes it the 2nd shortest runway in the world and is on the “Top 10 most dangerous airports in the world” list.

COME BACK AND VISIT US ANYTIME; WE’D LOVE TO SHOW YOU ALL THE SIDES OF OUR FRIENDLY ISLAND! ST. MAARTEN HEINEKEN REGATTA 2017

LLOYD THORNBURG

AT THE HELM OF TEAM PHAEDO

Forbes calls him sailing world’s ‘thrillionare’ but we call him friend and neighbor! In St. Barths and around the world, Lloyd Thornburg has been pushing the limits, breaking records and taking yacht racing to the highest of levels.

A TALE OF TWO HULLS

AN INTERVIEW WITH BERNARD SILLEM What was it like racing beach cats in the regatta for the first time?

Bernard Sillem has raced the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta for more years than he can remember, but what remains fresh in his mind is his first regatta, a memory which still brings a smile to his face now, many years later.

S

ailing is as much a part of Bernard’s life as eating and breathing but when beach cats were no longer on the entry list, Bernard took to the seas in a mono hull although his heart always remained with his trusted beach cat. So much so that when beach cats took their rightful spot back on the entry list last year, he was there, ready to race. The thrill of Beach Cat racing will forever be in his blood.

Check out www.heinekenregatta.com for exclusive all-in Beach Cat packages to the 37th St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. Different packages, including entry fee, a welcome party, security for the boats, safety on the water, accommodation and transportation. The Beach Cat class is proudly sponsored by:

What was it like all those years ago, when beach cats became popular?

It was something new! One hull in the air, hanging on the trapeze, gliding past the shores of the popular beaches. We caught the attention of all the girls on the beach and it was something everyone wanted to try because it looked so cool! What made you decide to race in the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta?

We quickly discovered the beach cat was a very fast machine close to shore, so of course we wanted to take it to the next level and see what it would be like to sail out on the rougher ocean; we wanted to see if we could handle it. At the time, windsurfers weren’t allowed to take part in the regattas, but lucky for us they accepted the beach cats. They probably thought the windsurfers spent too much time in the water and not enough time on the boards, but we didn’t care; we were just happy they let us race!

Day one of our first St. Maarten Heineken Regatta was the ‘Around the Island Race’ and the course went clockwise around the island. The start horn blew and we set off from the Fort Amsterdam area. Usually at that time the organizers would take a nice break, relax with some ice cold Heineken beers while enjoying lunch at Chesterfields in Great Bay close to the finish line. After rounding the island, we left Pointe Blanche on the right (on starboard) and entered into Great Bay for the supposed finish, but there was no finish line; That’s how fast we were! I had to dig under my wetsuit below my harness to find the VHF, which was completely soaked even though it was in my waterproof bag and call the race committee. “Regatta Committee, Committee, Committee its P19, P19, P19. We can’t find the finish line, where is the finish line…? After quite a while a sweet sounding voice answered, “P19, where are you?” “We are in Great Bay!” “P19, take your time now, right where you are.” Again I had to dig into my wetsuit; I had a Casio 100m waterproof watch. It was only around 1PM! We finally got back to the beach and the regatta director ran up to us and asked us to kindly not shout out the news that the finish line was not dropped in time. I would never do that! The regatta committee is excited to have the Beach Cat fleet out on the starting line again this year and thanks Bernard Sillem for his continued dedication to the event and the beach cats. His assistance and experience is invaluable!

THE GREAT DEBATE

WINDWARD/LEEWARD VS PASSAGE & DISTANCE RACING

W

hat makes the Gill Commodore’s Cup different than the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta? It’s all about Windward/Leeward (W/L) racing! I’ve always had a passion for racing. I’ve flip-flopped my entire career between love for W/L and love for distance/ passage racing; I could never make up my mind which way I like better.

“ Passage and distance racing is beautiful. If you have an island, you use it!” For years I had a huge distain for distance but couldn’t get enough of W/Ls. Years later I abhorred W/L (what a waste of time and energy!) and wanted only to race as many miles away as possible in as many distance races I could, dreaming of a time I could escape to the sea forever. I’ve never loved both at the same time and I seemed to never be able to make up my mind; which one was favored.

Truthfully, they are both wonderful! W/L is attractive; there is something about the ritual and routine. Rounding to port, hoisting the kite, tactical decisions to either bare-away or gybe. Take down the kite. Go upwind again. Do the same thing over and try to get it right, every time. At a certain level of competency, the team who makes the least amount of mistakes is awarded the win. W/L is also ideal for one-design racing fleets. It’s designed to show us who the better sailors are, not the better boat. Passage and distance racing is beautiful. If you have an island, you use it! What’s better than utilizing the lands-end of your island as a turning point to the range and bearing of the next mark? As the Caribbean continues to be the worldwide favored sailing and racing destination from February until April annually, many Caribbean regattas tend to use passage distance racing to give the racing sailor the full show of the natural beauty, tropical scenery, wildlife, skyline, weather and all that comes with racing in the Caribbean.

of course some fast reaching legs. After so many years racing both ways in non-tropical destinations, I can recall sitting on the rail around 3am in 25+ knots of breeze and 30F/0C, in full foul weather gear and saying to myself, “I could be doing the same thing I’m doing right now, but in a SO MUCH warmer place.” The light went on above my head; I’m moving to the Caribbean permanently! Now I can do my W/ Ls and passage races all the time, year round and race to my heart’s content in endless summer! This year, the Gill Commodore’s Cup on Thursday, March 2nd is included for everyone except Lottery Class. It’s a separate regatta (windward/leeward courses with two to three races are planned) with separate prizes, so competitors can choose to race this day alone or combine it with the rest of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta experience. There is also an option for one-design classes to include the Gill Commodore’s Cup results to make a four-day regatta that suits the class. Good luck to all competitors! By the editor

For me today? A favored course would be a coastal course with a few windward leeward legs thrown in and

he St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and I will always be connected in a special way; we have both existed for the same amount of years. If I ever happen to forget my age, all I’d have to do is find out what year the regatta is in! We’re connected in many other ways too!

reggae band. It was the biggest concert of our young careers so far and we were seriously stoked! Our performance was on the Port de Plaisance stage and I was nervous! We had to prove our worth and prove we belonged on such a big stage. I remember how great it felt to see the huge crowd of locals and tourists together, all enjoying the show!

Being born and raised on St. Maarten, I attended many of the regattas during my youth. I never took part in the races even though my dad was an avid sailor, having sailed himself from South Africa to the Caribbean in a 25 footer, back in the 60’s. He also helped build a few of the famous Spronk catamarans when he first settled on St. Maarten, together with Peter Spronk himself.

It was all over before we knew it and the following day we were enjoying Steel Pulse’s epic performance to close out the event. Since then we have performed at eight other St. Maarten Heineken Regattas, sharing stages with legendary artists like the Wailers, The Commodores, Damian Marley and numerous others, while having the most amazing weekend of the year with friends, old and new, from all over the world.

However it was the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta of 2002 that suddenly gave the event a completely new meaning to me; the first year my band Orange Grove was booked to play the event! At that time I was living in the Netherlands and we had just started up Orange Grove, our rock-

THE ST. MAARTEN HEINEKEN REGATTA BOTTLE The unique Heineken “Regatta” bottle is back for the 37th edition of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta! In December 2015, Heineken officially launched a new packaging and label designed specifically for the island of St. Maarten. The iconic 25cl green Heineken bottle is featured with the event’s logo, commemorating the longstanding involvement of Heineken with St. Maarten’s largest sailing and music event. “We are super excited to be recognized by Heineken globally and have a special front label designed for St. Maarten. I have only seen global events like the UEFA Champions League and the James Bond movies commemorated in this way,” says John Leone, Commercial Director at International Liquor & Tobacco Trading NV, the official distributor of Heineken beer on St. Maarten. He proudly adds, “The design is progressive and iconic and will be clearly recognizable on the retailers’ shelf.” The special ‘37th edition’ St. Maarten Heineken Regatta bottle will be launched across all outlets (bars, restaurants, supermarkets etc.) on the entire island, starting December 2016. Quantities of the special St. Maarten packaging are limited, so pick up this collector’s item while supplies last!

ALWAYS KEEP AN OIL SPILL PAD HANDY WHILE SAILING, FOR LEAKS AND SPILLS. Oil spill pads are the perfect absorbent for any location which requires fast response to small spills. They’re specifically made and designed to quickly absorb oil while repelling water and other liquids.

2

Taking into account the racetracks around the island and the period of the year, the probability of a large humpback or sperm whale strike by a vessel is particularly high during the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta.
