Case Study - Whiteway, Bath and North East Somerset ‘Before RE:generate I wasn’t doing much - there was nothing to do. I got in trouble, was with the wrong people. Now i’ve moved away #om them, set up my own project, volunteered and going back to co$ege’ ---------Stephen* is one of the top offenders in Bath and North East Somerset. Stephen has a long criminal record and has been targetted by the police for a number of years due to a significant number of crimes that he had committed. RE:generate’s Community Animator met with Stephen 10 months ago who expressed a real concern at the lack of opportunities that he had been presented with that led him into leading a life of crime. He was desperate to get out of the situation that he was in but his peer group were exacting a significant amount of pressure on him that meant he was unable to do so. The Animator built trust with those around this young person and with the young person. They were able to identify their various needs in relation to the development of skills and qualifications. Since building this relationship the young person has effectively engaged with RE:generate by volunteering on local projects, trying to develop his own project with others as a diversionary activity from crime. He has achieved Literacy and Numeracy at a level 2 standard and has explored college courses and the application process for Art and Graphic Design. The commitment of the young man to transform his personal situation has had a significant impact on his community. By engaging Stephen and his peers there is clear evidence that show that there has been a 21% reduction in total recorded crimes in the ward in which Stephen and his peers live meaning 233 less victims of crime.
