Our RE:form programme
RE:form is a resource for potential, prospective and practicing councillors, and parliamentarians in all main political parties that broadly share the aims objectives, values and principles of the charity. We also offer RE:form to political groups, alliances and trades unions. The RE:form concept is based on the “Root Solution ‐ Listening Matters” approach to engagement and empowerment of citizens. It introduces the concept of the “politician as facilitator” who will promote an invigorated proactive and refreshed politics that inspires and re‐engages people on their terms ‐ and helps transform institutional behaviours. The proposition is to teach politicians to understand and apply the listening and transformation skills that RE:generate has developed over the past 20 years to find and grow leaders, customers, clients, volunteers and voters who support activities that develop local culture, economy, cohesion and environment within strategically developed and managed networks. A politician or community leader trained by RE:generate will become a key facilitator who can work very effectively with the activists and social entrepreneurs who emerge through a Root Solution ‐ Listening Matters programme helping them to implement the practical, public service and political change people need and want . A deeply rooted mandate for action grows and develops from the listening and dialogue process in neighbourhoods and communities, and programmes of activity are planned and developed. As social enterprises and projects emerge, people are supported to take actions to improve services and tackle key community issues ‐ and to work closely, assertively and professionally with agencies and authorities. People become steadily much more engaged in the running of their neighbourhood ‐ alongside their politicians. The Listening Matters analysis of people’s individual and collective concerns and aspirations informs all the activities and always reflects the views of between one and five thousand people. Financial and political sustainability are built into the strategy: almost everybody takes an action at some level. The very least people do within a Listening Matters network is to vote – and they do so from an informed perspective. The payback for the politician who executes the process well is that they will identify key leaders who will set up projects to tackle concerns. They will also develop a network of users, customers, clients and volunteers ‐ and people who promise to vote. They will find people who become interested in joining a political party and possibly even standing for office. A good politician will facilitate and never dominate the team and network. She will have access to a powerful database of names, addresses, emails and phone contacts for hundreds and often thousands of constituents – as long as she has built the trust, respect and relationships that lie at the heart of a successful network. © Action to Regenerate Community Trust 2011
A typical “Root Solution – Listening Matters” network gets behind its leaders. After two years work an accountable and facilitative politician will hold their seat ‐ or gain a seat by dislodging those who are failing to serve their community. “Root Solution – Listening Matters” dovetails well with party campaign plans – it’s a strategy to win and a strategy to hold a seat in the best interests of local people and the common good. It is worth remembering that Listening Matters develops trust, respect and relationships between individuals and across communities. A full time politician can connect and engage with 5000 people over 12 months.
Why RE:form : why RE:generate does this work with politicians In the last 20 years RE:generate has worked to develop a process of community and political transformation that is rooted in Britain. It is not imported from the America’s. It completely reflects the culture, concerns and aspirations of the people of these islands and it recognises the cry from the nation for a new political system that engages, encourages and leads. We have listened to over 300,000 people in inner cities, towns, villages, streets, pubs, churches, boardrooms, living rooms and fields. We have heard that people are deeply concerned, frustrated, worried and angry. We have built a process that offers the opportunity for people and politics to transform through actions and not words. That fits with the mission of the charity. People need much more from their politicians than representation. They want a particular leadership. Our listening over many years has made that clear and informed our strategy as it has organically developed. RE:generate is now offering this strategy and process to all the main political parties because they, and the wider public, all acknowledge that political renewal is vital for the transformation and sustainable development of our communities and nation. Peace making, community and nation building are at the heart of this strategy. We offer a one day RE:form presentation package ; a two day introductory workshop and ongoing support by arrangement. We will also work with local authorities and public agencies as part of a public engagement and equalities strategy to help up‐skill officers and councillors in the whole transformational process. These may then choose to deliver a full Root Solution ‐ Listening Matters programme themselves under license, or they may prefer to build a deeper understanding of potential impacts by commissioning an independent delivery agent. About RE:generate RE:generate is a charitable trust (Reg. No. 1078551) with an enterprising approach and social action ethos. Its objectives are to tackle the root causes of poverty and inequality. It does this by systematic listening that engages individuals and animates communities to develop and deliver solutions to problems they face; and by supporting and delivering personal and local development programmes, popular education and enterprising networked action that has a transformative impact on behaviours, public services and organisational structures. Over 20 years of holistic development experience in the UK and overseas the RE:generate team has developed a unique product and set of tools that are now increasingly in demand across the UK. The Cabinet Office is actively promoting Community Organising as a key plank in the promotion and support of an invigorated civil society, a transformed public sector and more local governance. RE:generate is now nationally recognised as a key organisation to train, support and potentially place community organisers across England. RE:generate’s Root Solution ‐ Listening Matter’s process builds community leadership and capacity, sustainability and resilience. Combining elements of Freire and Alinsky, social enterprise and ecology, the model, network strategy and tools take community development to the next stage – beyond informing and influencing to shared responsibility and accountability. RE:generate has worked with a range of organisations and agencies in a number of successful projects and contexts across the UK – most recently in Bath & NE Somerset and Wigan, but also Sheffield, Poole, Plymouth, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Glasgow, Leeds, London, Christchurch, Dorset. As well as the RE:form programme for political leaders, we offer consultancy and training programmes for schools (RE:educate), and faith groups (RE:congregate) and are developing special interest packages in relation to community planning (RE:plan), community and social enterprise, and health.
