Year 1 Busy Bees Spring Newsletter 2012 Happy New year and welcome back, I hope you all had a lovely holiday. I would just like to remind you that your child needs a PE kit for Thursday which should consist of a pair of shorts, a t-shirt and trainers/pumps. In addition to this can you please ensure your child brings a bag to school so that they can take out or exchange their library book on a Friday. If they wish to exchange this more often the school library is open after school on Tuesday and Thursday. Thanks

Anthony Browne Week 1 (Back to school 4th January 2012)

This week the children will have the opportunity to share their experiences with the class about their holidays and they will also be setting themselves a goal which they would like to work towards in class for example to write a sentence independently or to form their letters correctly. We will be starting our new topic which is focussed around the author Anthony Browne who was the children’s laureate 2009-2011. We will be reading the book ‘Gorilla’ and taking part in lots of discussion about the story and it’s characters. The children will also be learning to draw in the same style as Anthony Browne.

Week 2 (Beginning 9th January )

The children will be looking at the characteristics of a Gorilla, then choose an animal that represents them. The children will listen to another fabulous story called Zoo. We will be looking at the authors style of writing and what they like/dislike about him as an author. Throughout the term the children will take on the role of a conservationist (Jungle Explorer) to learn about Gorillas. They will be learning about the differences between things that are living and things that have never been alive through this topic.

Week 3 (Beginning 16th January)

On Monday 16th the children in year 1 will be going on an educational visit to Seven Stories to see the exhibition on Anthony Browne. The children are to use their knowledge from Seven Stories and other sources to create a biography of Anthony Browne.

Week 4 (Beginning 23rd January)

This week we will be looking at where Gorillas are located in the world using maps and globes and the children will begin to understand that there are very few Gorillas left. In the role of conservationists the children will learn the importance of caring for their environment and how peoples action effect the animals around them. The children will also be making 3d gorillas using felt and other materials.

Week 5 (Beginning 30th January)

This week we will be learning to measure using cm’s and metres. Towards the end of the week the children are going to compare themselves to gorillas. They will measure their height and compare this to an average gorilla. They will also be looking at similarities and differences in their characteristics and movements to a gorilla.

Week 6 (Beginning 6th February )

To end our topic the children are to put all their knowledge together to produce a non fiction book on Gorillas. On the final day of term Wizadorra will be visiting the children to show them her new magic tricks.
