Year 2 Busy Bees Autumn Newsletter 2012
PEACE The children will become familiar with the new routine in year two and we will spend the Week 1 (Back to school week getting to know each other. The children will be working with their peers to make some collage bees to decorate the classroom and in class we will be sharing their bags that 4th September) tell us all about them.
Week 2 (Beginning 10th September)
We will introduce our new topic ‘Peace’. The children will explore what Peace is and what it means through stories and class discussions. They will be encouraged to think of a place that is peaceful to them and they’ll be asked to describe it, towards the end of the week the children will create a poem on peace which will become part of a display. We will begin to look at some symbols of peace and make a Dove in the style of ‘Picasso’.
Week 3 (Beginning 17th September)
In maths we will be looking at shape and symmetry. In RE we will be listening to stories from the Bible e.g. ‘Noah’s Ark’. This Friday the whole school will be celebrating International Day of Peace. The children will be taking part in different workshops to celebrate Peace and harmony in our school and community.
Week 4 (Beginning 24th September)
On Monday the children will be celebrating Harvest Festival and the whole school will be going to St Hughes Church. This week we will begin listening to the story Dragon Rider which is a fantasy story about a brave young dragon and a boy that embark on a magical adventure to find a place of peace where silver dragons live without fear. Over the next 5 weeks the children will produce work based around the book and peace. This Friday the children will be asked to dress up for our Dahlicious Dress Up Day to raise money for a marvellous children’s charity. You can dress up as the BFG, Matilda or the Witches (the list is endless).
Week 5 (Beginning 1st October)
We will continue to look at Peace through the ‘Dragon Rider’ and the children will carry out different activities based on the book. In maths we will be doing calculations and number work which we will continue until the end of the term.
Week 6 (Beginning 8th October )
Over the next few weeks the children will be doing Yoga in PE. We will continue work on the Dragon Rider which will include map work and different geographical activities.
Week 7 (Beginning 15th October)
This week we will be finishing our Peace topic and the children will be creating their own version of the Dragon Rider which they will write.
Week 8 (Beginning 22nd October)
Our Final week is Italian Week. The children will take part in the whole school Italian project where they will be learning about a different culture. They will have the opportunity to learn a bit of Italian as well as learning about the Italian Cuisine. The children will visit Frankie and Benny’s to make their own pizzas and have some fun. Parent’s Evening will take place this Monday and Wednesday so please save the dates in your diary.
Non uniform day on Friday 12th to raise money for Henshaw’s Charity.
On Friday we will celebrate the end of our Peace topic with a day of exciting activities.
