While the winter landscape is a vision of frosted beauty, it doesn't have quite the same effect on the face. Biting winds, rain, snow... It's all rather uncomfortable. But, did you know, discomfort is nothing to what cold weather actually does to your looks?

How to take care of your skin through the colder months

Winter strips our skin of essential oils, leaving it vulnerable to a range of skin concerns If you have ever felt a taught, tingling sensation or even itchiness, your skin was most likely reacting to the cold.

Winter Hydration

The best time to protect your skin from the cold is as soon as the mercury drops If you have been following our Autumn Skincare Regimen, you should now ensure that both day and night creams are rich and nourishing. During the day, you need a product that is going to protect your face and provide a barrier. Your evening routine should include a product that will nourish and revive the skin.

When it comes to cleansing, avoid using water that is too hot or too cold and stick with products developed to nourish the skin Be careful when using toners, too Invest in a product that will hydrate the skin

Of course, keeping your fluid intake up is essential You may not feel like a glass of water or weak squash, but your body will really need it

Lip Care

What is the point of having plump, hydrated skin if your lips are dry and cracked? If you wear lipstick, ensure it is enriched with moisturisers or switch to a tinted lip balm

As the UK government moves to shut down fake review factories, now is a good time to consider how much we trust beauty product reviews in general and what they really tell us.

With honest reviews often hard to spot among the millions of fakes, it should come as no surprise that confidence in online buyer feedback is at an all time low

If you take reviews with a pinch of salt, it is worth reminding yourself that major platforms invest serious cash in tech that can spot and take down fakes quickly.

Legislation, announced in April this year, makes writing, commissioning, hosting or facilitating fake reviews an offence.

So, it is in every brand's interest to keep websites free of manipulated product ratings and commentary.

New laws were deemed necessary to increase consumer confidence in online reviews After all, who wants to be persuaded to buy something that an honest reviewer would pan?

Currently, it is estimated that good reviews (fake or otherwise) convince us to part with, on average, £900 a year

Consumer champion Which? has welcomed the introduction of new legislation

Its director of policy and advocacy, Rocio Concha said: "It's very positive to see action to tackle the avalanche of fake reviews that undermine confidence in online shopping and tougher powers for the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to protect consumers from rogue companies that consistently flout the law including the ability to fine firms directly.

How much do you trust online reviews?

"The impact of these rip off practices is enormous. It is currently a far too complicated and lengthy process for the CMA to hold businesses to account."

Beauty Reviews

Let's face it, beauty products aren't cheap A simple moisturiser from a premium skincare brand can set you back up to £120 So, you want to know it is going to deliver noticeable benefits before you splash the cash

I recommend carefully checking reviews for all skincare goods and especially eye creams, dark spot correctors and serums That is because these lines should sell more than just a promise. You are not going to follow the crowd, I hope, if they are saying 'This product doesn't work' or 'It irritated my skin'.

I always check reviews for a product on more than one platform before I make a purchase decision.

That is because I don't always trust reviews on brands' own websites.

Devotees of a certain make can be fanatical in their support for all products, even if some are better than others. I know this because I am a fan of a particular brand myself and, in my eyes, it can't do any wrong. I am in love with their next new product already and I don't even know what it is. Get the gist?

Beauty brands can offer customers loyalty points for reviews, too. While there is no stipulation that reviews have to be good, my favourite brand has very few ratings below five stars on its website. Something to bear in mind.

When it comes to beauty products, you have to remember that all reviews are subjective This is especially true when it comes to reviews for products like foundation because choosing the right shade and coverage is 99 per cent of the battle when it boils down to customer satisfaction

Purchase errors are a leading cause of poor reviews. In this case, brands suffer because of their customers' mind boggling stupidity.

With fragrances, you have to remember that it is all about chemistry and scents can smell different from person to person.

I am always prepared to take a punt on something that isn't going to set me back too much. If I'm in the market for a new face cream and there is one on offer for £7.99 with a good rating, why not? If it isn't quite as good as some of the ratings led me to believe and doesn't bring me out in hives, I'm not going to have a meltdown. And, o course, it could be fantastic.

Even genuine reviews can be influenced Think of things like:

What other people are saying about a product, including influencers

Price if a product previously sold a £2999 is offered for £999 for a limited time, is that going to make consumers happier with a purchase? Postage and packaging speedy delivery in fancy packaging with a personalised 'Thank you' card always goes down well Loyalty points (as previously mentioned)

I don't take any notice of any review written by a man for a beauty product they have bought for a woman The 'performance' could be based on their fantasy of what the 'ideal woman' looks like

Do you trust beauty vloggers?

So, can we trust reviews? The simple answer is that we can get a fairly accurate overall perception of how a product will perform by taking into consideration ratings from more than one platform and by recognising reviewer types

I never pay any attention to vloggers' reviews or social media posts by 'influencers'

If a product you are interested in has hundreds or thousands of reviews with an average rating of 45 stars, you are most likely not going to be disappointed

REVIEWS

I've tried an awful lot of eye creams and treatments over the years including instant eye lift serums - but this one is different.

Retailing at under £10, this small pot goes a long way and, in my experience, delivered a noticeable result in just under a week

I've currently been using the cream for about a month and still have plenty of the product left in the jar

What the brand says about the cream Revolution claims the cream hydrates and re energises delicate skin around the eyes It says the product brightens and firms the skin for a more youthful appearance in four weeks

What I noticed:

Reduced puffiness

Diminished fine lines Brightened the skin

Like most modern miracles, there is always a drawback. For me, the only issue with this eye cream is that it is not really suitable for wearing under make up. That is because it can 'pill'. However, it is perfect for night time use or on days when you don't wear foundation.

The best thing about this product is its price just £8.

Because of its popularity, it often sells out and you may have to add your name to a wait list on Revolution's website. The way around this, I have found, is to buy a couple of jars at a time.

The cream is so good, I panic if I forget to apply it.

A spa bar was the last thing on my mind when I recently oversaw the revamping of my bathroom. But... the XcE bathtub caddy tray happened to be on offer when I was searching for bathroom shelving.

What drew me to the product was its smart design and natural bamboo materials It comes with two removable side trays and a fabric tablet/book stand There's also space for a mobile phone

Extendable, this product is designed to fit most baths It came fully assembled and was in place in about a minute

I was worried it would slide away from the bathtub sides and slip into water However, it grips very firmly and has proven to be a sturdy place to store all the things I want to hand from shampoo and conditioner to a soap dispenser

Of course, the urge was always going to be there to give it the full spa look so I've added a mini waterwall ornament, candle and some cheap flower arrangements bought in Poundland.

It looks absolutely fab and makes reaching for things while I'm in the bath so much easier. If I'm using the shower, which is over my bath, I simply move the spa bar out of the way.

The only drawback and it's a big one has been lying down in the bath to rinse my hair. There isn't quite enough legroom. I've contorted myself into some really weird shapes to try and achieve the impossible.

It gets my vote purely for its sleek aesthetics.

This make up set by UCanBe retailed at more than £50 when it was launched. It eventually settled at £19.99 - but soon sold out.

I managed to get my hands on one just before UK stocks ran low Attracted by the sheer range of products inside the gold coloured case, I literally could not wait to give them a try

Pros and Cons

I have got to say straight up, the case is plastic and it feels like it too. However, when you open it up... What a glorious sight to behold.

Since getting the kit, I've used the blusher, bronzer and highlighter every day.

The eyeshadows include mattes, shimmers and glitters. Being a bit of a Glitter Girl, I went for sparkly pigments first.

The eyeshadow is easy to apply and just as good as much more expensive brands. While there is some fallout on the glitters, it's mostly during application.

I rate the lip colours but have yet to try the brow products. The brushes are a useful addition to the kit but, for pro looks, you will need more. Purchased from Amazon.

After thinning the bottom layer, move onto the middle layer and finally the top Be careful to concentrate mainly on the ends of the hair when you get to the last stage of the process

A modern take on the Snow Queen theme

Not all breast cancers have a lump

Inflammatory Breast Cancer is the breast cancer most women have never heard of. It is extremely rare, accounting for less than two per cent of all breast cancers. It is also deadlyespecially if it is not diagnosed quickly.

What sets this breast cancer apart is its aggressive nature, presentation and, more often than not, lack of a 'lump'.

Of those unlucky enough to be given a diagnosis of Inflammatory Breast Cancer around 50 per cent do not survive, data suggests

Undetectable until the cancer is stage 3, this is a disease that develops quickly often over a period of just weeks So, unlike many other breast cancers, it does not take years to form In addition, it is always present in at least one lymph node at diagnosis

This is a breast cancer that has no known genetic markers, meaning it is not hereditary There is also no known cause, although medics often cite a raft of 'common denominators' such as smoking, alcohol consumption and being overweight This cancer is commonly initially misdiagnosed it can look like a myriad of benign breast conditions such as mastitis

Symptoms can include one or a combination of the following: redness, swelling, feeling hot to the touch, pain, a rash, the appearance of orange peel like skin, and an inverted nipple The cancer grows like a spider's web in the skin and interferes with the lymphatic system For some, this can lead to overall hardness in the breast

Advances in systemic treatments over the past decade, however, are giving more women and some men, too real hope

A trimodal approach has seen survival rates increase Those diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic disease are living longer due to newer treatments

These advances have put chemotherapy drugs first on the list of treatments Neoadjuvant chemo is crucial to shrink the cancer and make surgery viable Clear margins is the aim but some patients have the best possible start, experiencing a pathological complete response meaning the drugs have killed all the cancer This is not a cast iron guarantee that it will never come back, however

Following surgery (non skin sparing mastectomy with lymph node clearance), radiotherapy should commence in four weeks

Depending on the cancer's 'sub type', its HER2 status, whether or not there was any residual disease after chemo and a person's age, further drug treatment is likely to be required often for at least a year and in some cases for up to five or 10 years

Additional treatments can include targeted cancer therapies such as Herceptin and Perjeta, hormone receptor antagonists such as Tamoxifen, more chemo and/or a three year course of drugs to help prevent bone metastasis and osteoporosis

Because Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) has different treatment pathways to most other breast cancers, patients need to be their own advocates The only specialist centre in the UK is in Birmingham and it is important that those given a diagnosis of IBC know the correct treatment schedule

Thankfully, the Inflammatory Breast Cancer Network UK offers support and advice to all those going through treatment In addition to sharing international treatment protocols and offering emotional support, it has a team of world leading experts, based in Birmingham and at a university cancer centre in the US, to offer free second opinions.

While a diagnosis of IBC is devastating, more and more patients are either surviving it or living with it.
