FABRICADEMY FINAL PROJECT
An artistic approach where people are connected with colors, memories, music and festivals in a natural environment. The starting point was based on a previous project I made, where people meet in a colorful festive environment. I wanted to recreate the marbling technique, I used in my paintings and prints to make a canvas with natural colors and techniques. An important aspect for the creation of my design, was the color so I went into researching the theory of colors, what they express and how they were made. Some key words that helped me develop the project were: MAYAN COLOR THEORY, NATURE, EARTH, PIGMENTS, WATER, EMOTIONS. The Greek Islands and the Aegean Sea, brought up memories from my country, leading to the creation of the storytelling through my design. I would describe it with the phrase ‘Wear your own Canvas’in a festival.
I thought of presenting my work in an artistic way that reflects on my personality and feelings. I decided to start in reverse direction of the pages to reveal the abstract pattern of
THE ABSTRACT PATTERN OF MARBLING THROUGH WOOL FELTING FINAL DESIGN, THE EXHIBITION, THE FELTED GARMENT, BIOMATERIALS WITH WOOL, THE MAKING, MY COLORBOARD, LET’S PLAY WITH SHAPES, INSPIRATION, ABSTRACT, REFERENCES
The ideation behind the photoshoot was to showcase the ambiance of the Aegean Sea.
I imagined scenes of Greek islands such as watching sunsets and the way the waves interact with rocks and their forms.
Therefore I pictured the model having a wet look style to portray the feeling of being in that natural environment in the Greek Islands.
The marbling pattern is connected with water and the form of the garment is influenced from my abstract paintings.
During Finals, there was an oral exhibition which was great to interact with the audience and open discussions. I placed some of the materials I used throughout my journey of creating the final piece.
the felting Box of naturally dyed wool and all the color combinations that turned out. Experiments with natural dyes on paper and the creation of it
Pure Merino wool and silk naturally dyed. Biomaterial samples such as sodium alginate mixed with wool, agar agar to reflect upon the marbling effect.
Followed the wet and needle felting technique to create the garment and all the connections. Playing with shapes on the mannequin, helped me find different ways to wear the textile and decide on the final look. I wanted to present an ‘unfinished look’ with materials such as pure wool combined with silk and create a handmade textile that can be adjustable , hanged and worn, representing the CANVAS that turns into a garment.
Sodium alginate is waterproof. Experiment with spirulina, trumeric and coffee

Clleaned the wool, open and comb the fibers and mordant in a dye bath with Alum for lighter hues and Iron for darker hues. Vinegar changes the PH so I could get some orange tones. Left the fibers for 24 hours at least but in cold water otherwise they will shrink. Placed the wool fibers accordingly on top of a bubble wrap and filled up all the remaining holes. Olive oil soap is ideal and acts as a glue to the fibers. Mixed the soap with water and sprayed on the piece. With another sheet of bubble wrap I rolled over the material from both directions to make sure the wool fibers are well connected in one piece.
Used spices, roots and plants to dye the wool. Placed madder root , hibiscus flower in boiling water. Then I separated the remaining pieces of roots and dyed the wool fibers. Made sure that the water was not too warm otherwise the fibers will shrink. The madder dye bath creates a dark blue and black color and if the fibers remain in the water for longer, then you can get a great deep blue tone.
Raw wool is not very easy to work with and when it comes to dying it wasn’t very easy to get the exact color I wanted with natural dyes and remain soft. Although it has many beneficial properties for example it is durable, insulates even when wet, is stain resistant, has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties and has natural UV protection. As it is the most prelavent natural fiber known in Ancient Greece, I wanted to connect wool felting with colors, nature and music to tell my own storytelling through art with different patterns.
Nature expresses itself in a wide spectrum of colours all around us. The alchemy of colours started from an early time. I looked up about color theories back then and an important aspect to develop my colorboard was the Mayan color theory. Natural dyes are inviting and satisfying to use. Most are familiar substances that will spark creative ideas and widen your view of the world. You can get natural dyes from animal and plant sources. Many plants and some animals have been identified as potentially rich in natural dye contents, and some of them have been used for natural dyeing for quite some time. Various parts of plants like roots, stems, barks, leaves, fruits and seeds may contain colouring matter which can be exploitedroots, stems, barks, leaves, fruits and seeds may contain colouring matter which can be exploited. I experimented with madder roots, mallow blue and hibiscus flowers, trumeric and spirulina pigments and earth minerals. Different tones of blue, yellow, brown and green symbolize the Aegean Sea, sunsets with music, nature and earth.

Sketches and forms describe the transition from a canvas to a textile and then to a multifunctional garment
The ambiance of the Aegean Sea, the sunsets and the nature of the Greek Islands, brought up memories from my country
‘PELAGOS’ meaning higher sea and forms of water and rocks led me to create the shape of the garment
Photos taken by me at the Greek island Skopelos reminded me of the summer memories, listening to my favorite music while creating the pattern
Colors are connected with memories, music and feelings. The Aegean Blue, sunsets in the Greek islands, shades of the rocks led me to create my own color theory
This photo was taken at Skopelos islands where I spend the summer, at the magical Kastri(the famous rock with the little chapel, scenes from the Mama Mia movie where the wedding took place). It would be a great place for the photoshoot of the garment.

Acrylics and Paints are toxic, your paints may contain toxic chemicals san titlos
Paint products also contain high VOC content that are hazardous air pollutants. (Volatile Organic Compounds) VOCs react with oxygen and form an ozone layer in the presence of sunlight. This ozone is thought to be a contributory factor to global warming and air pollution as part of the greenhouse effect. Propylene glycol, for example, is safe enough for use in the food and cosmetic industry, but has a disastrous effect in aquatic environments, meaning that pouring acrylic waste water down the drain is damaging to waterways.
Plants have a wide array of colors in different parts of their body and have been used for multiple purposes. Several colored components (secondary metabolites) such as anthocyanins, carotenoids, apocarotenoids, anthraquinones, flavonoids, etc., were investigated for their potential therapeutic efficacy as antitumorigenic agents. These colored molecules have the ability to interfere and involved in multiple cell signaling pathway such as cell death, cell survival and cell cycle pathway. In this article, we review the different colorants and their role in killing cancer cells.
