Wabi-sabi philosophy knows that aging is inevitable and.
Custom metal lampshades hang in the dining area and one of the bedrooms, as a way of incorporating a contemporary element to the overall earthy and natural interior; their own imperfections also demonstrate how the ancient philosophy of wabi-sabi can find new applications in contemporary design. The main experiment here was to add a conceptual approach to the overall design, based on the theory of the four elements: earth is represented by the clay on the walls, fire and water are symbolised by various artworks, while the space between objects and rooms stands for air.

THE ART OF BONSAI | 盆栽の技術
THE ROOFTOP BONSAI GARDEN A passion for nature and man’s harmony with it has instilled itself into the garden culture for over a thousand years in Japan. Japanese garden art challenges the onlooker to intellectualize their own ideas. It is all about coming to terms with what ultimately it is that we are all seeking and what it is we wish to project into the design of our own gardens.

bonsai is governed by a set of aesthetic guidelines that range from an aversion to symmetry to a desire to accurately mimic the proportions of a fully-grown tree – all of which must be accomplished without any trace of the artist being evident. The desired effect is one that
asym metry
expresses the Japanese concept of beauty in imperfection, evident in the avoidance of symmetry. It is about appreciating the transient nature of existence and the impermanence of nature through caring for the bonsai plant.
THE ART OF BONSAI | 盆栽の技術
As with a vast array of Japanese art forms, bonsai is a complicated yet subtle process in which the desired gravitas of the plant arises from the simplicity of the aesthetic, the product of painstaking hard work and patience. As any one who is even vaguely familiar with Japan might expect,
TRANSIENCE OF EXISTENCE While wabi sabi is best understood as ‘beauty in imperfection’ (evident in the avoidance of symmetry), mono no aware can be translated as ‘the pathos of things’ and is about appreciating the transient nature of existence and the impermanence of nature through caring for the bonsai plant. Bonsai, therefore, is intended to posses a certain poignancy through which the viewer is able to reflect on some of the weightiest of philosophical considerations humans have found themselves wrestling with. 20
