A Trip Around Regina Here’s a quick trip around our city.
Getting Here Regina, Saskatchewan is located in the centre of the nation, making it easy to get here. And getting in and out is easy – Regina’s International Airport (YQR) is only a 10-minute trip from downtown. YQR is only minutes away from the main venue of Evraz Place, minutes away from a majority of the downtown hotels, and about 10 minutes from all potential venues. YQR is serviced by partners such as Air Canada, WestJet, Delta, United, SkyService, Air Transat, Express Air and Purolator, offering over 200 direct flights per week to Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto, Minneapolis, Denver and more. The city is situated on the Trans Canada Highway, which extends east and west connecting all of Canada. Once you’ve arrived, getting around Regina is simple. Safe and efficient transportation of participants, VIPs and visitors are always a concern for any special event. The majority of attractions, venues, and hotels in Regina are no more than ten minutes away from each other, allowing for easy navigation of the city.
The new bus depot in downtown Regina offers daily Greyhound and provincial bus line service. This means you can transport larger groups and get packages and deliveries daily. By car – Regina is only 90 minutes from the U.S. border. City buses move people seven days a week and the city’s online Trip Planner helps riders travel from any destination within the city. Downtown hotels are just steps away from shopping, event venues, art galleries, restaurants, bars, libraries, parks and Regina’s business district. Many cab companies operate in Regina and limousine service is available. Budget about $30.00 (plus tip, of course) for a cab ride from one side of the city to the other. Buses and drivers are also available for hire and trucks, cars and vans are available for rental at the airport. The city planners did a great job here. Well-planned, wide roads and Regina’s Ring Road (which circles most of the city) allow travelers with a car to get where they need to be within a half hour.

Did You Know? Originally called Pile of Bones because of the huge piles of buffalo bones left in the area by First Nations hunters, the community was renamed Regina (Latin for queen) after Queen Victoria, who was the monarch at the time. It has been known as the “Queen City” ever since.

Festivals Regina has over 100 festivals and annual events. You’re destined to find a festival, concert series or jamboree in Regina that fits your groove. Uncover new indie vibes at the annual three-day Regina Folk Festival, or heat up the summer with the smooth sounds of JazzFest Regina. Celebrate a winter wonderland at an event that celebrates winter sport and activity – SaskTel Jibfest – or beat the winter blues with soulful and rousing tales at the Mid-Winter Blues Festival. Whatever you do, just make sure to pace yourself, because there’s always a new party, like the Regina Fringe Festival, Mosaic Cultural Festival, or the Craven Country Jamboree, just around the corner.

Shopping There are five large shopping malls in the city and two larger retail parks in North Regina and East Regina. The artsy Cathedral neighbourhood (an eight minute walk from downtown Victoria Park) offers several one-of-akind finds created by local artists and shop owners. The historic warehouse district boasts pubs, nightclubs and shopping.
Dining There are over 200 restaurants and 30 coffee shops in Regina. Innovative chefs have created astounding new tastes by pairing prairie sensibilities with world-infused flavour. Ethnic food, family favourites and fine dining are just a walk, drive or reservation away.

Volunteers Residents don’t think of Regina as a small town, but being good neighbours makes the city feel friendly and closeknit. It’s a good feeling, knowing that the people you live with care about you and how you’re doing. This could also be why Regina has one of the highest rates of volunteering in the country. Over 45% of Reginans volunteer on a regular basis.

Sport in Regina Just play. We get sport and sporting events. Regina’s long, outstanding history of hosting sporting events and being able to quickly recruit armies of volunteers is a benefit to any event planner – and then add to that our firstclass facilities. Sport event hosting in Regina can be a small, or one of national or international proportions. It is important, therefore, that the city has the proper facilities for every level of play and participation. When Regina plays host to a major athletic event, something is left behind that benefits residents, and the city as a whole.

The Sport Corridor Many of Regina’s premiere facilities are in what is becoming known as the “Sport Corridor”. Phase two will add more temporary seating to bring the stadium capacity up to 50,000 for the Grey Cup. CURLING
AQUATICS Aquatic pursuits are encouraged at Regina’s indoor and outdoor pools. The local water polo teams, Regina Optimist Dolphin Swim Club and synchronized swimming clubs and competitions keep Regina pools busy and well maintained.
Regina is the proud home of the late Sandra Schmirler. Sandra and her team won the inaugural Curling Gold Medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics, bringing glory to the sport and to all of Saskatchewan. That legacy lingers with three outstanding curling rinks in Regina — the Tartan, the Highland, and the Caledonian. For large-scale curling events, such as the Brier and World Championships, the Brandt Centre played host.
