welcome to regina

Message from the Mayor I am pleased, on behalf of my colleagues on City Council and our residents, to welcome you to Regina, Saskatchewan’s capital city. Regina is a vibrant city with a population nearing 200,000. The city’s generous spirit is infectious and its residents are known for being welcoming and friendly. As fall approaches, walk through our picturesque Wascana Centre — the peace, colour and beauty offered by a Regina fall is a truly captivating sight. Winter in Regina offers no less beauty or opportunity for outdoor fun and residents and visitors partake in a wide range of activities. Regina is home to the RCMP and features attractions such as the Saskatchewan Science Centre, the Kramer IMAX theatre, Casino Regina, RCMP Heritage Centre, Government House, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, and the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. We also have many unique shops and fine restaurants, and a bustling and attractive downtown. Anticipation and excitement in our city is building, as we have the privilege of being the host city to this year’s Grey Cup in November. We are eager to welcome football fans from across our country to fill Mosaic Stadium for the game. If this is your first visit to Regina, I hope it will be the first of many. If you are a returning visitor, you have already felt Regina’s inescapable attraction as you explore new adventures time and again. Sincerely, Michael Fougere, Mayor

Tourism Talk As the seasons change from summer to autumn and the temperatures begin to drop, we know you will find warmth in the friendly spirit of our city. This fall we are proud to welcome people from across the country to celebrate one our favourite Saskatchewan pastimes as we host the 101st Grey Cup Festival and Grey Cup Championship Game. Regina is renowned for its hospitality, and we look forward to making you feel at home. And please, do not be surprised if we say hello to you when we pass you on the street or offer a friendly suggestion of what to see and do while you are here in Regina — it’s just what we do. In November, the 101st Grey Cup Festival and the Grey Cup Championship Game will transform our city and truly become a Celebration in Rider Nation. There are many more events, activities, shopping, dining and unique experiences that you can indulge in throughout the fall and winter months. We encourage you to try something new and explore all there is to see here in the Queen City. Many ideas are found within the pages of this magazine, and many more can be found on our website at tourismregina.com. Watch a Pats hockey game, get your Rider pride on, sample the delicious wares and libations of a restaurant from a different culture, be a cowboy for a day, watch the RCMP Sergeant’s Major Parade, catch a fantastic performance at one of our many arts and culture venues, go antiquing, find a remarkable piece of First Nations art, or step back in time and learn about our history — the possibilities are endless. We are so glad you are here. Enjoy your time in Regina. Sincerely, Wanda Posehn VP, Tourism Regina

Regina celebrates Oktoberfest By Andrew Livingstone For L-P Specialty Products

D

espite being a traditional festival, Oktoberfest can incorporate elements that are not conventionally included. “This year, we are combining two events to celebrate the fall season,” said Kerri Van Loosen, president/manager for the Regina German Club. The club will pair Oktoberfest with another traditional German festival, Zwiebelfest (onion festival), on Sept. 27. The event starts at about 5 p.m. in the main hall. “You will experience a festive environment with live music while dining on traditional ‘Onion cake’ and side dishes,” Van Loosen said. “It is free to attend, so please come and check out a little piece of German tradition.” At 5 p.m. the next day, Oktoberfest celebrations will begin in earnest. “There will be tasty German foods to compliment any of our imported German beers,” Van Loosen said. “We will have two live bands. Len Gadica starts at 6 p.m. with more traditional Bavarian tunes and polkas, and The Pile of Bones Brass Band will commence around 9:30 p.m. and play throughout the evening. In between all the festivities, there will be dance performances; raffles, including our

famous ‘wheel barrel of Import beer’ raffle; and, of course, our team competition.” Oktoberfest will also be celebrated elsewhere in the city. The Casino Regina Show Lounge will host The Western Senators, a renowned polka band fronted by Brian Sklar. The show begins at 7 p.m. on Oct. 7 and runs until 9:30 p.m., including an intermission. Tickets are $10. “It is a tradition at the casino, and I think it’s important to continue to offer that opportunity to our audience,” said Karen Mondor, the casino’s manager of entertainment services. Agribition — What’s on your fork? L-P Specialty Products

T

he Canadian Western Agribition (CWA) is more than just an international cattle marketplace – it showcases all aspects of the agricultural industry, with something for everyone.

While cattle trade is at the heart of the CWA, people of all ages will enjoy experiencing the agricultural industry firsthand through various pavilions and exhibits. There are is also plenty of entertainment and dining options to take in. Educating people about where their food comes from has become a pillar of the CWA experience. With the explosion of interest in locally produced food, consumers are sometimes left wondering where to start. In response, the CWA, in partnership with the Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association and the Turkey Farmers of Saskatchewan, have produced What’s on Your Fork?, a food sampling and information station in the Credit Union Eventplex featuring locally produced products such as turkey, beef, eggs and chicken. “People come through the show [Agribition] and we can show them, ‘What’s on your fork? What are you eating these days?’ We showcase some of the good food that we grow in the province,” Rose Olsen, executive director of Turkey Farmers of Saskatchewan, said.

12 TR AVE L R e g i n a Fall/Winter 2013/14

“Most people perceive turkey as lean and healthy. We want to show people what they can do with that in creative ways,” she said. At its Agribition booth and on its website, saskturkey.com, the organization offers numerous recipes, many of which are tested in Olsen’s own kitchen. “We like to keep things fresh and healthy. Feeding your family and ensuring they have proper nutrition is important to all of us,” she said. The Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association, meanwhile is hoping to help consumers more fully appreciate the beef that is produced in Saskatchewan. For example, they are hoping to bring to light the nutritional benefits of beef, such as its high iron, B12 and zinc levels, and the fact that it is now being recommended for children as young as six months old. “We’re hoping to have somebody giving out some rubs and some recipes … but we’re really looking forward to sharing our knowledge about beef and connecting with the consumers,” said Patty Englund, project manager at the Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association. For more information on what to see, taste and do at this year’s Canadian Western Agribition, visit agribition.com. It is sure to be an informative and delicious few days!

Rodeo family fun By Carol Todoruk for L-P Specialty Products

F

rom its birth back in 1963, the Canadian Cowboys’ Association (CCA) has grown faster than a young heifer. Starting with only 60 members and 15 rodeos, it now boasts more than 700 members and is the largest semi-pro rodeo association in Canada.

The excitement builds throughout the season, reaching its peak at the Canadian Western Agribition with the CCA finals. Last year, the event drew a record crowd of almost 22,000 to watch the best in rodeo action. It’s also the kind of excitement the whole family can enjoy, both as spectators and participants, said CCA general manager Mark Bencze. “There are entire families that rodeo all year long,” he said. “It’s an amazing thing to go to the rodeo and see these families.” This year’s finals will see 110 competitors vying for more than $174,000 in cash and prizes in nine events. “There’s been increased interest from some of the top competitors in Canada. We’re looking forward to one of the highest-quality finals we’ve ever had,” Bencze said. For more information on the rodeo finals or to purchase tickets, visit agribition.com.

Old outside, new inside Regina’s heritage buildings make great attractions By Miranda Burski L-P Specialty Products

F

or some business owners in Regina, embracing the past is just as important as preparing for the future.

Take, for example, Casino Regina. The casino is housed in the old Union Station, originally constructed in 1911 and ’12. Union Station functioned as a train station until 1990, and in 1991 it was designated a national heritage site. The Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation bought the building in 1994, and it officially opened as a casino in 1996. Although the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation renovated the building, they wanted to keep as much history within its walls as possible. “For decades, Union Station played a central role in the development of our city and our province, so it was important to our corporation and the community to preserve its historic and architectural heritage,” said Twyla Meredith, president and CEO of the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation. “At the same time, we knew that

incorporating that history, coupled with the building’s simple yet grand design, would help make Casino Regina a truly unique entertainment destination, one that the people of Saskatchewan would enjoy for years to come.” The historic elements incorporated into the modern casino include the façade, the terrazzo flooring, the ticket booths, the art deco chandeliers and various elements of the washrooms. More family-oriented heritage-building attractions include Government House and the Saskatchewan Science Centre. Government House was originally constructed in 1891 to serve as the residence and office of then lieutenant-governor Joseph Royal. Today, the building has been restored to the period of former lieutenant-governor Amédée Forget, who was in office from 1898 to 1910. It features a museum with restored bedrooms and offices, an interpretive centre, a conservatory, and Edwardian gardens. Government House is also home to the offices of the current lieutenantgovernor, as well as the staff who run the site. Visitors

the Kramer IMAX Theatre was added to show a variety of documentary and Hollywood-style films.

“What we’re trying to do … is to bring that history to life,” said Carrie Ross, executive director of Government House, “to educate our youth so that they have a sense of pride, of place, of being from Saskatchewan, knowing where they came from and where they’re going to be going.”

“When it was originally built, Regina’s city council wished that the building would become ‘an ornament to the shores of Wascana Lake,’ ” explained Sandy Baumgartner, executive director. “Through our partnership with SaskPower [which also has operations within the building], we are proud that the Saskatchewan Science Centre has become such an important cultural landmark in the city, and that it can serve both as a reminder of our past and a lens through which we can view our future.”

Throughout the year, Government House also plays host to Victorian teas, an old-fashion Victorian Christmas and a Halloween event featuring the spirits that are believed to inhabit the building. The Saskatchewan Science Centre, meanwhile, has taken a different approach to the use of a heritage building. This attraction is housed in Regina’s old powerhouse, which was originally built in 1914 and supplied at least some power to the city until 1978. That same year, the Junior Service League of Regina proposed that the building become the Saskatchewan Science Centre.

For more information about each of these attractions, visit casinoregina.com, governmenthouse.gov.sk.ca and sasksciencecentre.com.

Now housing an ever-changing collection of more than 150 interactive exhibits and frequently featuring fascinating travelling exhibitions, the Science Centre gives visitors a chance to learn about science through the lens of Saskatchewan. It first opened to the public in 1989. In 1991,

s Saskatchewan’s largest public art gallery, the MacKenzie Art Gallery has played home to exhibitions of historical and contemporary art not just from Saskatchewan, but also from across Canada and around the world.

Originally a university-run gallery, the MacKenzie Art Gallery opened in 1953. It became a public gallery in 1990, moving to its current location at 3475 Albert Street. Since then, the MacKenzie has been true to its mission to bring art to life for the thousands of people who visit every year. To celebrate their 60th anniversary, the MacKenzie embarked on a large-scale exhibition to mark the event. “How We Filled the Vault: Sixty Years of Collecting” is the largest display they have done of the Permanent Collection since they opened the Albert Street location. In addition, the MacKenzie Art Gallery will be presenting “7: Professional Native Indian Artists Incorporated,” running from Sept. 21 to January 12. This exhibit features the work of the Professional Native Indian Artists Incorporated, one of Canada’s most important early artist alliances. It will include more than 100 works from both private and public collections. The MacKenzie Art Gallery presents their exhibits in a large and interactive facility that includes the gallery, conference rooms, a theatre, the vault and an art conservation lab. They provide awardwinning art education through school tours and student resources, and they promote a fun and inviting atmosphere for friends and family to share in the art experience. For 60 years, the MacKenzie Art Gallery has maintained its vision of transforming the community by connecting people with art in Regina and throughout Saskatchewan. Pumpkins, — Oh my!

hen the spooky season arrives, Regina has plenty of thrills, even for those who outgrew trick or treating years ago. Whether you’re looking to communicate with real ghosts, or be part of a Thriller flash mob, this Halloween - try something different.

Halloween is a scream at Pumpkin Hollow For people who love Halloween, Pumpkin Hollow offers up an impressive menu of fun events to kick off the spooky season. Kim Haring, who owns Pumpkin Hollow with her husband, Matt, says Halloween is one of their favourite times of the year. “We love it. We’re all completely into it, and every year we seem to get more into it,” she said. Photos courtesy of Lisa Mitchell

The seasonal events begin on Oct. 13 with the Pumpkin Princess Pageant. The following week is the Screaming Pumpkin Race — a fun run that raises money for Dallas Valley Ranch Camp. On Oct. 27, the real Halloween Extravaganza begins, including the Miss Teen Scream contest, a Halloween parade led by the Headless Horseman, a costume contest and a Thriller flash mob. There is also trick-or-treating through a very “spooked up” pumpkin maze, and a few other surprises. Haring said the variety of events is the best part of coming to Pumpkin Hollow, not only at

If you’re looking for a more authentic g h o s t experience, Eco-PARTY! Tours offers

“Ghost Tours of Regina.” According to Brad Zakreski, who co-owns the company with Scott Carson, these hands-on tours provide an experience like no other. “Other tours around North America will take you past haunted locations or briefly through them, but Eco-PARTY! Adventures does their best to offer the opportunity for you to experience them,” said Zakreski. The tours, which last approximately twoand-a-half hours, make several stops, and participants have the opportunity to see, touch, hear and feel ghosts. “One of Canada’s top psychics, Robyn Carissa, accompanies the tour as an expert in dealing with spiritual energy, and it provides a very authentic experience,” said Zakreski. Because many of their guests return each year, the company tries to vary their tour stops so it is a new experience even for frequent participants. Guests receive a brief tour inside several landmarks, ghost/spook education, ghost detecting devices, a ghost seminar with psychic Robyn Carissa and plenty of fun, hair-raising adventures. Tickets for tours go on sale in September. Group tours are also available year-round. For more information, check the website at ecoparty.ca.

Get your fish on By Jenn Smith Nelson

W

inter activities in Saskatchewan are abundant, and there is no greater outdoor activity as synonymous with our province during the cold months as ice fishing.

As early as late December when the ice is usually thick enough to drive on, fishing enthusiasts make their way out to frozen hotspots in the Regina area. Some choose to fish from a stool and take the opportunity to sit under, and appreciate, the big prairie sky; others fish from the open door of their truck; and then there are the serious types who put up seasonal ice shacks. Many even get creative, choosing to make and decorate their shacks or put up temporary seating (for example, envision a couch on ice). Lasting three months, the season ends in mid to late March, which is when thawing often begins.

you should be set. Oh, and most importantly, remember to buy a fishing license and pack a camera to capture your record-setting trophy fish! If you need guidance, hire an outfitter. They can offer a range of services and make your ice fishing experience easier and more enjoyable. Try embracing winter this year and give ice fishing a go. Two great resources that will provide you with all the information to make your ice fishing adventure a great one are fishing-in-saskatchewan.com and ifishsask.com.

There are several lakes in and around the Regina area where perch, walleye, burbot, pike, whitefish and trout can be caught, including: Long Lake, Mission Lake, Echo Lake, Pasqua Lake, Buffalo Pound Lake and Katepwa Lake, to name a few. Since Tatanka Boutique opened this spring, BigEagleKequahtooway has been overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response she has received from the community, observing a renewed interest in and awareness of Aboriginal artwork blossoming in young and old alike. BigEagle-Kequahtooway explained that the most rewarding feeling is knowing that Tatanka Boutique is “supporting First Nations and Métis artisans and their artistic spirit and endeavours, which in turn supports the artistic community and helps to nurture it and to keep it growing. There is a profound ripple effect in both the aboriginal and non-aboriginal community of appreciation of the value our artists bring to Saskatchewan. I am most proud that Tatanka Boutique is building and nurturing values within our communities.” Tatanka Boutique is looking forward to further building upon those values, with art workshops planned in the near future to teach traditional Aboriginal arts to new generations of artists. BigEagle-Kequahtooway encourages those interested to stop by Tatanka Boutique during business hours Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., or to visit tatankaboutique.ca for more information. Holiday shopping in Cathedral Village By Lori Wiens For L-P Specialty Products

O

n Nov. 16, Cathedral Village will come alive with the holiday spirit as local businesses celebrate Christmas in the Village. According to Brad Kreutzer, vice-president of the Cathedral Village Business Association, this annual event showcases all that is special about Regina’s Cathedral neighbourhood. “It is the perfect time of the year for us to celebrate the community atmosphere that sets us apart from anyone else in the city,” said Kreutzer. “It really is a small-town feel in the big city.” The festivities begin when shops, restaurants and other businesses take part in Light Up the Village. During this kick-off event, Santa and his reindeer pay a visit, and visitors can enjoy hayrides, hot chocolate and carolers. Local chefs create ice sculptures that add to the beautiful displays

throughout the area, and there are prize draws throughout the event. “Christmas in the Village is great because it draws in people from outside Cathedral who are looking to explore the neighbourhood, do some Christmas shopping, indulge in treats and get into the holiday spirit,” said Kreutzer. This event launches the holiday season for the many independent retailers who will be keeping their doors open late into the night. Businesses in the area appreciate the event not only because it increases traffic, but also because it gives them a chance to create an atmosphere that lets them acknowledge their customers and participate in the fun. “It’s harder to create the old-fashioned feel of Christmas in a mall,” Kreutzer explained. “When entire neighbourhoods get into the holiday spirit, it brings communities together.” shopthevillage.ca.

hopping in Regina’s Warehouse District provides a wealth of options – both old and new.

Regina’s Warehouse District is a business improvement district totalling 80 blocks, all nestled within the boundaries of Albert Street and Winnipeg Street,

and 4th Avenue and the Canadian Pacific Railroad (CPR) tracks. The Warehouse District is home to both modern and historical Chicago-style buildings, which were built in the early 1900s. The area was hit hard by the 1912 Regina cyclone, and many of the original turn-of-the-century buildings had to be rebuilt.

shop & stay The area now features an eclectic blend of those structures, combined with new construction, all offering a wealth of services and shopping for every budget. Antique aficionados, especially, will appreciate the shopping opportunities the district offers.

The Warehouse District is home to both modern and historical Chicago-style buildings, which were built in the early 1900s. Antiquing becomes extra special at the Antique Cellar, 1350 Rose Street, and A to Z antiques, located in the Antique Mall at 1175 Rose Street, which are both located in converted early-1900s warehouse buildings. “It’s appropriate to have the antiques in antique buildings,” said Audrey Price, executive director of the Regina Warehouse District. “It’s quite interesting — you feel like you’re right back in the era,” she said. A third antiques store, Affinity’s Antiques, is located at 1178 Albert Street. While each offers a full range of antique items, the three stores do specialize to some extent, said Price. Affinity’s Antiques, for example, carries a lot of glassware, including Carnival and cranberry glass, as well as toys. A to Z Antiques carries a lot of furniture, lamps and old clothing, while the Antique Cellar is “a mix of both. It’s kind of fun to see everything they have,” according to Price. Old or new, you’ll be blown away by the shopping experience in Regina’s Warehouse District. warehousedistrict.ca.

ith the recent growth in Saskatchewan, the hotel industry in Regina has also grown. The addition of new hotel rooms to the city is one of the reasons Regina has become a strong competitor in the Canadian event market. As Regina’s hotel room supply continues to increase, the city will be positioned to accommodate more visitors and support larger events and conferences. “Almost 1,000 new hotel rooms have entered the Regina market in the past 10 years,” said Tracy Fahlman, CEO of the Regina Hotel Association. “This increase now provides our city with a key asset to acquire large and prestigious national events that require significant hotel rooms, such as the JUNO Awards, Skate Canada Challenge and the Grey Cup.”
