Shire ‘to benefit’ from new mine By GARY HUTCHISON
COOK Shire Mayor Peter Scott has welcomed last week’s announcement that Traditional Owners have agreed to a deal with a mining company for the development of a coal mine near Lakefield National Park. The Kalpowar people and Cape York Indigenous leader Gerhardt Pearson sealed the deal with Bounty Mining for the Wongai project. The mine is expected to produce about 1.1 million tonnes of coal for export annually, which will be trucked through nature reserves to the coast, after which it will be transported by barges to ships waiting in deeper waters for shipping overseas. Mayor Scott said he has been involved in a number of meetings with the proponents and was comfortable that
comprehensive environmental impact studies will need to be completed. “I have kept the Councillors from the past council, along with the current Councillors, informed of the progress of the project and the developments from these meetings as they have occurred.” Cr Scott said the whole project had been driven by Traditional Owners with consideration always given to minimizing adverse environmental impacts. “The process that will be undertaken is called ‘trans-shipping’ and is one which is designed to minimize the need for dredging and minimize any disturbance to the sea grasses off the coast,” he said. Mayor Scott said he sees the project as being one of a number of emerging projects that will benefit Cooktown and the Cook Shire in terms of social and economic development.
“Cooktown and Laura will be the main service centres for this project,” he said. “We would hope there is a higher degree of local level opportunity during the construction and ongoing stages.” In a recent ABC report, Bounty Mining director Rob Stewart predicted there will be between 250 and 270 jobs offered during the construction stage and around 200 jobs at the operation stage. “Indigenous owners will earn revenue from the sale of coal and they can also get jobs on the venture,” he said. The Queensland government gave the project significant project status last year. However, the state and federal governments, as well as the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority need to grant approval before construction can start.

TO the people of Cooktown. Firstly, thank you all for your wishes, prayers and cards whilst I was away in Brisbane Hospital. I am now home and have been for 6-7 weeks. I’ve tried to see as many people as possible to say “hi”, but, as I can’t drive and rely on Diane, I am fairly restricted. So many people want to know how my treatment and recovery

are going, so here is a short version. I have had eight surgeries, totaling about 26 hours. I have got rods, plates, screws and wires in my leg. I have had a muscle from my back grafted into my leg and skin grafts. The grafts have taken very well and the doctors are pleased.
The bones are taking their time knitting, but they believe that time will cure all. My treatment will be ongoing for at least the next two years and then hopefully I will be able to walk, drive a car and even ride a motorcycle again. We are lucky to live in this paradise and each time I go to town and see people who greet me
with such concern and interest only confirms this. So once again, thank you for all your wishes and words of encouragement, they really do make a difference. I hope to see you all in the near future. Regards Denniss Roesler Cooktown.
How public is a public forum? Senator’s ‘sour grapes’ - Entsch HOW can the Council hold a public forum (PCYC Cooktown Events Centre, October 8, 6-7.30pm) on the pro/ anti fluoride debate, but only accept questions beforehand by email? Twenty minutes discussion by each side and “no” questions from the floor. The boss can also close
the meeting if anyone is objectionable in her eyes. It could well be your emailed question may not be included, so “please explain” - what is a public forum? NB: Dictionary definition of ‘forum’ - “any public meeting place for open discussion” Trisha Allen, Marton.
THERE’S a distinct sense of ‘sour grapes’ from Jan McLucas (Nth Qld ‘dudded’ by the new Abbott Government). I’m absolutely confident that the Abbott Government will understand FNQ’s needs and challenges and in fact, I think it’ll be a vast improvement after Jan’s noticeable lack of advocacy and local achievements during her time as Queensland Senator. Jan has conveniently ignored the fact that as the Chair of the Committee writing
the White Paper for Northern Australia, I’ll have the opportunity to write our region’s future social, economic and environmental directions. And as for previous comments that I have been ‘demoted’, she is welcome to call the Prime Minister’s office to confirm that I was given a choice between remaining the Whip, or taking on this responsibility. After asking myself where I could make a lasting difference, I chose the North. Warren Entsch MP Federal Member for Leichhardt

NEWS
The mail must go through at Mt Carbine LIFE goes on in the aftermath of any tragedy and that was the case in Mt Carbine last week, as locals weighed the cost of the destruction by fire of their local roadhouse. Not only a source of fuel that was lost in the blaze, but their little general store and its postal services. Mt Carbine Hotel Motel co-proprietor Keren Bohm told the Cooktown Local News last week the real cost in the loss of mail for some locals would take a long time to sort out. “There were people who had mail waiting for them that would have contained valuable letters,” Keren said. “There’s one elderly gentleman who has been hospitalised for a while and had months of mail waiting for him and now that’s all gone.” Keren said her own son had lost important documents in the inferno. “He was waiting for papers to come
through from the army,” she said. “We’ve had to ring them to explain what happened and ask them to send them again. “But at least we knew what was lost, not like a lot of people.” However, the situation with the collection of mail and its delivery has, in the short term, been solved by Keren and her husband, Nick, who have taken over the role and are waiting for confirmation they will be providing the postal service for the long term. “I did my first delivery on Monday night and we’ve started handing mail over on Tuesday,” Nick Bohm said. And what about the general store. “What we’re doing at the moment is providing essential stocks for items like bread, butter, milk and some other lines,” he said. “It’s just a community service at this stage really, we have no plans of being a general store.”

Do you know how plastic is recycled in Cook Shire? All plastic containers disposed of in recycling skip bins or trailers are brought to Cooktown Waste Transfer Station for sorting. Plastic bottles are sorted manually. We separate plastics by their type. Our staff also remove all the bottle caps. You are welcome to come and check out the process. Unfortunately we have a high contamination rate and lots of plastic must be thrown out.
Please make sure that containers you want to recycle are empty and rinsed. Please also remove all the bottle caps and place them into recycling bins and trailers separately. Please also keep in mind that plastic and rubber toys, plastic furniture, glasses, dishes etc ARE NOT RECYCLABLE, so don’t put them into recycling containers but place them into your rubbish bins.
N
After plastics have been sorted by type, they are then baled. Once we have collected 20 bales of plastic it’s taken to Cairns recycling agents. Cook Shire currently recycles approximately 6 tonnes of plastic annually.

ON the edge of town lies one of Cooktown’s mostimportant tourist facilities, the Big 4 caravan park. Locals tend to drive past it without ever realising that, under the trees, there is a small town inside. It is quiet and shaded, a friendly sort of place with 72 caravan parking sites and 32 cabins. I sat on the wide verandah of the manager’s residence with one of the current managers, Tammy Martland, and she told me what it is like to run a spread like this. “I’ve only been here since July of last year. I was born in Brisbane, to a city family. “We always enjoyed camping and travelling. Now, everyone lives everywhere - America, Cardwell, the Territory. “I did not particularly enjoy school and I left in grade 10. I wanted to get into admin. “My mum was an admin person, and that’s what I wanted to do. I went to a TAFE course in Business Administration. My first job was as a junior in an accounting office.” Now, people have the idea that accounting is unbelievably boring, and so are accountants. Could Tammy tell us if that is true? Tammy laughs and says: “Well, I’m not an accountant! In the job I was in, I went as far as I could without studying, and that was not what I wanted to do. “So I headed off overseas and went travelling. “I had done a lot of accounting and pay roll accounts and it put me into a good position to do what I do. “It got me into hospitality and I always wanted to get into that. “When I took a job in the Territory, it was accounts and pay roll. “It was at Yellow Waters, Cooinda, in Kakadu.
That is about 250km from Darwin.” Moving into the isolation of northern Australia must have been a big change for Tammy. “Yes. We lived in single-person ‘dongas’. Bit of a shock at the beginning, but that is where I met my now husband, Dave. “We got married on Yellow Waters, where we met. “Yellow Waters is inland, and it is a long trip by small boat to the sea. It is flat wetlands, with lots of things to look at - crocs, buffalo, wild pigs and horses. “There are rock art places like Nourlangie Rock. Kakadu has got quite a bit to see out there. Some people say there is not a lot there, but when you live and work there you find lots of out-of-theway places to see.” What was the peak time for visitors there? “Pretty much the same as we are here in Cooktown. I love the wet season, it is my favourite time of the year. “Over there the storms are just spectacular. The wet season is a lovely time of the year. “You can get into most places. Last week I attended the final planning and consultation conference here in the Brisbane Business Conference Centre, where the various interested parties consulted with each other. It was an informative session and Professor Bruce Eisenkopf laid out the various components of his proposed study, and we all agreed that this is an excellent way forward for Cooktown. Youth Arts Shed funding boost HOPE Vale Congress presented the Hope Vale Arts and Cultural Centre with a cheque for $80,000 on Wednesday, September 18, to contribute to the building of a Youth Arts Shed and the purchasing of a Toyota Troop Carrier for quickly expanding cultural programs. Congress representative Mr Brian Cobus presented the cheque to the Gamba Gambas after a community barbecue held at the Arts & Cultural Centre. The funding came from the Hope Vale community benefit fund, which is allocated to the community as part of royalties from Cape Flattery mine and managed by Hope Vale Congress. A number of community organisations such as the football teams, junior football and kindergarden etc. were presented with cheques of significant amounts to contribute towards costs associated with the growth of their organisations. The Arts & Cultural Centre would like to thank Hope Vale Congress for their ongoing support in their expansion and further business developments. The Centre hopes to commence building the Youth Arts Shed in
early 2014. The shed will be utilised as a contemporary art space for disengaged youth of the community. It is the first time in Hope Vale that a building would have been built solely for the youth of the community. The space will provide youth with an opportunity to develop their skills in contemporary arts as well as take part in regular cultural and recreational activities that are co-ordinated through the Arts & Cultural Centre. Centre’s Cultural Program Manager Mr Lawrence Deemal is responsible for engaging and co-ordinating a range of regular cultural and recreational diversionary activities for the Youth of Hope Vale. Lawrence is assisted by the Centre’s Youth Engagement Officer Lela Jacobs, and together they work with the youth of Hope Vale ensuring their Guugu Yimithirr culture is transferred down the generations from the community’s Elders as well as learning new ways of presenting their culture to the world through contemporary Indigenous
art forms. “Within the Youth Arts Shed we will run youth specific programs such as contemporary art residencies, textile workshops, music recordings, dance practices as well as daily recreational activities for the youth of Hope Vale,” said Hope Vale Arts and Cultural Centre Business Manager Tara Zaicz. “The youth will have ownership of this place and we hope that it encourages their engagement in artistic, cultural and community activities. “We are trying to encourage Hope Vale’s youth to stand up and be leaders for their community. Mrs Zaicz said contemporary Indigenous art is a great way for the youth to not only keep their Guugu Yimithirr culture alive but to also create sustainable economic opportunities for themselves and their community. “Regular engagement in these fun and productive activities will ensure the well-being of Hope Vale youth is maintained and they are presented with opportunities to better their future without having to leave their community.”

COMMUNITY By MARTY PATTIE THERE are some beautiful plants out there - some genuine tropical showpieces. There’s also a host of common garden plants, many of them native, that have inbuilt defence mechanisms that make them a little less than “user friendly”. Firstly, and most importantly, it needs to be stated that there are over a thousand species of plants in Australia that we happily co-exist with that are poisonous to humans and animals. Because plants cannot run away from predators, they develop toxicity as a defence.
Plants that make you go: Mmmm . . . or Aagh . . . or Ouch!
Datura flower. For instance, the leaves of the common passion fruit vine break down into cyanide. This is a natural protection against predators. Mango skin and sap contains “urushiol”, the chemical in poison ivy. Anyone having an adverse reaction to mangoes will more than likely be allergic to urushiol.

between toxicity and mild stimulation. Anyone who has travelled in parts of Asia or the Pacific would have witnessed people chewing the areca nut wrapped in betel leaf. This is supposed to be a mild stimulant. Another “toxic” plant that has been ingested for its hallucinogenic affects is the datura (brunsfelsia). Any attempt to ingest these is not recommended as an overdose can be fatal. Another interesting toxic plant is the strychnine tree. There are several species, strychnos lucida grows around Cooktown and contains (in all parts of the plant) a lethal cocktail of alkaloids, including strychnine. Used as rat poison, it can cause fatal convulsions, although Aboriginal people used parts of the plant in small doses as an analgesic, to treat eye disease and to poison fish. Also found in our backyards is the gympie gympie (dendrocnide moroides), one of the worlds most poisonous plants. Any bush walker will know it is one to look out for. Its leaves contain tiny hollow silica-tipped hairs that pierce
the skin, with the intense pain lasting weeks and sometimes months. Then there are the carnivorous plants which are native to the swamps and heathlands of Cape York, such as the tropical pitcher plant (nepenthes mirabilis), which grows along creeks and rivers. It is shaped as its common name suggests and has a cap to keep rain out. They are partly filled with a fluid that contains digestive enzymes which break down prey such as ants and other insects. Drosera is the botanical name for sundew, which was first collected by Joseph Banks on the Endeavour in 1770. There are many sundews, coming in all shapes and sizes - they have alluring and sticky dew-covered tentacles which trap and then embrace insects that land upon them. Digestion takes several days, then the tentacles return to their normal open position. All of the above would make a fantastic feature garden to introduce the Mother-in-Law to next time she visits. Happy gardening.

LAST week’s special poem, “In Queensland Now”, by Nancy Francis, caused me to reflect on the fact that patriotism, the love of one’s local area, state or country, is (if not taken to extremes wherein we ignore the needs, hopes and dreams of others outside our own beloved backyard) a great creator of energy, producing a worthwhile and uplifting ‘esprit de corps’. Our Cooktown This breeze-blessed opal hugging the sea Is home to me and thee and thee. With rainforests green, river and ocean of blue, This tiny town our hearts did woo. The Night Sky (This verse was penned, sitting uncomfortably atop a huge rock under an inky-black, diamond-studded sky, by the light of the moon and just a smidgen of street lighting.) With The Southern Cross my anchor And a black velvet cloak above, I sit and savour the night sky Of the Queensland that I love.
Writers’ Corner
The eye of my mind sees the beauty Spread from shore to back of beyond; A landscape as varied as opals; Light of day the magician’s wand. Come sunlight, the coral will sparkle Like pearls ‘round an azure throat And the blue of the ocean mirror God’s creatures - the colours of Joseph’s coat. The green of the forest lies waiting For the finger of light to reveal Magic emerald and olive unsullied Hushed mantles of darkness conceal. Red ochre, the colour of desert, Burns ‘neath the blue of the sky But, now, all is silver and silent, Enamoured by a moon on high. With The Southern Cross my anchor And a black velvet cloak above, I sit and savour the night sky Of the Queensland that I love. by DIANNE KELLER
140 Years On...

e
140th anniversary coming up
WITH this October 24 being the 140th anniversary of the establishment of Cooktown, we thought we would recap on the events that led up to October 24, 1873. When the colony of Queensland was founded on December 10, 1859, the Treasury had a mere 7 ½d. with which to build a new future. Gold played a major part in rectifying the lack of money. There were minor strikes in 1858, at the Canoona Field, northwest of Rockhampton, at Peak Downs in the Bowen Basin in 1861 and at Calliope in 1863. Then another strike was made at Crocodile Creek, near Mount Morgan, in October 1867. The largest discovery of gold during this period was at the Mary River, at what later became Gympie, and this had thousands of miners scurrying to the new field. Another minor find, inland from Bowen, was the Cape River Field, however its importance was overshadowed by the Gympie field. The next find was at Ravenswood Station in
1868, then in November 1870, gold was found on the Etheridge River, and this led to the Gilbert and then the Ethridge fields. The next year the mighty Charters Towers field was discovered. Then only one year later, Hann discovered gold on the Palmer River, which was later confirmed as a major field by Mulligan in early June 1873. In all, in the 14 years since separation, there were in excess of ten gold fields found. Miners, who were not on good gold where they were, had a field day rushing to new fields attempting to get the best producing ground. Many had plenty of practice, and by the time the Palmer field was found, there was little that would hold them back. On September 4, 1873, Jim Mulligan and party arrived back in Georgetown with four kilograms of fine gold from the Palmer River. Mulligan, Watson, Ableson . . . and others. . . . . went to the Palmer as a result of Hann’s report, published in the Government Gazette in early 1873, reporting some gold
in the Palmer, but suggesting it was not a profitable amount. The alluvial samples Mulligan brought back proved the richness of the field, and when he returned to the Palmer a week later, it was reported that one hundred people followed him. The problem was, that the wet season was only a couple of months away, and there were no settlements anywhere in the district to assist miners
who were flooded in. Mulligan himself warned in the Ravenswood Miner that, “If you are doing any good. . . . for God’s sake do not attempt to come, as people caught out in that direction without rations must perish”. Government authorities too recognised the risks. They also realised that a rush would occur and there was nothing they could do to stop it.
Therefore, it was decided to quickly establish a port to supply the new field. Without waiting for a report on the suitability of the Endeavour River from George Elphinstone Dalrymple, who had been sent to identify a suitable location for the port, the AUSN steamer Leichhardt was charted to convey a government party to the Endeavour River. Been on a trip lately?
CONSIDERING a trip can make you tired just thinking about it. There are the questions of destination, what to take, how to get there, how much will it cost, who in the family is going, will From the Pulpit it be worth it. . . ? Have you ever observed folks visiting Grassy Hill? Arriving at the top there are always the expected exclamations of delight and surprise as the panoramic vista of grandeur unfolds. It’s like one of the wonders of the world. There is the feeling that it sure has been worth it. Life’s physical journey reminds us we are also on a spiritual journey. There certainly is a destination and for Christian folk it is Heaven. The Bible encourages us to remember that while we are citizens here, our citizenship is in heaven. We are like the pilgrims of old, merely passing through. Just like the ordeals of any trip, we endure these. The Apostle Paul says, “I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” (Romans 8:18 ESV) including getting a new body like unto our Saviour’s. “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body. . . . “ Philippians 3:20-21. We have a hope and we are to rejoice in that hope.(Romans 5:1-2) Country gospel singers sing about being on the “Glorybound Train”. It’s great to be on it! Isn’t it great that anyone can embark on this spiritual journey because of God’s amazing grace, allowing all who come to him in faith and a contrite heart to be forgiven and become God’s children? The cost is free as Christ paid in full for us. We are not there yet. The journey will be worth it. The destination surely will be! Be encouraged today to “Press on”. NAIDOC CELEBRATIONS BEST IN YEARS MUCH-better planning has been attributed as the reason for the best participation in NAIDOC activities in more than five years. Gungarde Aboriginal Community Centre Chairman Warren Kulka said the efforts of the NAIDOC planning committee had been met with an enthusiastic response from sources within the community. Mr Kulka said that last Thursday’s march was easily the biggest he had seen in five-and-a-half years. “Not only did we have a lot more Indigenous adults and Elders involved, but we also had the schools involved too,” he said. “We owe a big vote of thanks to the students, teachers, parents and anyone else involved from the schools, their participation definitely added a real excitement to the march with flags and balloons.” He described this year’s NAIDOC celebrations had been excellent. “There has been an increase in attendances in all the activities, right across the board,” he said. “From the NAIDOC Ball last Friday night to karaoke to face painting and all the sporting activities. “I cannot heap enough praise on the planning committee, or on Sonya Robertson, the PACE Support Officer, who added so much energy into this year’s NAIDOC.” He said he hoped that now the local community had enjoyed a taste of what a special event NAIDOC can be each year, that everyone will get behind it for a bigger and better event next year. ABOVE RIGHT: Golden orchid at Wujal car park. RIGHT: Bottlebrush orchid at Marrdja Boardwalk. LEFT: Lily of the Valley orchid at Marrdja Boardwalk. ORCHIDS can be an obsession, but for most of us they’re just very pretty flowers. Right now and through October, it’s orchid time! A lovely specimen of the golden orchid is on a tangled tree near the Wujal Falls car park. On Thompson Creek, there’s a huge old horizontal strangler fig growing out over the Creek. It sports a few flowering white pencil orchids. However, the best place to spot orchids in their natural state is further away, down at Marrdja
Boardwalk, 10 minutes south of Cape Tribulation. The Boardwalk has enough elevation to grow big old rainforest giants, many exposed by cyclones to show the incredible proliferation of thick growing vines - pandanus, lawyer, and raphidophora. Check out the brilliant little strangler fig, with its host tree long gone, lying at a 45 degree angle near the start of the walk. Down near the junction of Olive and Noah Creeks, paperbarks and mangroves start to mix. Orchids love paperbarks. The paperbark
doesn’t flake off, but provides a nice base of fibre and moisture for the orchid roots to grip onto. Over the little bridge, start craning your neck and look up into the trees. You’ll see lots of bigger vines and epiphytes, but start looking also for little solo plants with tiny clusters of flowers - they’re the orchids. Last week, we recognised Lily of the Valleys, golden orchids, bottlebrush and pencil orchids all flowering now, plus the ubiquitous little clumps of button orchids,
l l e W g n i v i L
which are not actually orchids at all. And spiky antplants, which look like orchids but are not. The weather’s great. The scenery along the Bloomfield Track is beautiful at this time of the year, so make sure that you take the opportunity to head out and share an experience with your family, friends and visitors. Happy travelling. Mike and Trish D’Arcy D’Arcy of Daintree 4WD Tours Phone: +61 7 4098 9180 www.darcyofdaintree.com.au

I THOUGHT I’d introduce a change of pace into the column with the addition of some very tasty, but most importantly, very healthy recipes, which are simple and easy to make. I’m certain if you give them a try, you will be looking for the new one each week. This week, I’m starting with a doubly whammy - something for lunch and dessert. For lunch, try this Rice Salad 1 cup cooked brown rice ¾ cup kidney beans
¾ cup any nuts you like (including sesame seeds - brown in a hot pan to bring out the flavors) ¼ cup poppy seeds/chia/papita (pumpkin seeds) 2 x cup sultanas/currents/raisons 1 cup of various chopped herbs and anything else you fancy adding - I have added sundried tomatoes, black olives, beetroot, anchovies, a bit of boiled potato and cooked pumpkin. Dressing Juice of 1 lemon ¼ cup cider vinegar ½ cup oil (I use extra virgin olive oil) 1 dessertspoon curry powder (or a bit more if you like it a bit punchy!) Salt & pepper to taste Mix it all in a bowl together and enjoy! And now, what you’ve been waiting for - dessert. But who would have guessed you
could mix chocolate and avocardo in a dessert? Chocolate and Avocado Tart The following dessert recipe is one I tried over the weekend from the website www.wholelotahealth.com by a nutrition, lifestyle and mindset coach, Ngaire Stephenson. I was amazed at the simplicity and richness of this tart. The website is also worth checking out for the ‘Top 20 Healthy Snack Ideas for Women (and men) On The Go”. Base 200g desiccated coconut 200g almonds 1 to 2 handfuls of pitted dates Toast the coconut on a hot pan. Add to a blender or food processor with the almonds and dates. Blend them all together and add honey if required. Press into the base of a cake/ slice tin (preferably shallow).

Diggers’ stand-in skipper Stallan saves the day ‘Boy in Blue’ captures By WAL WELSH THE Queens Oval was the venue on Sunday for a match between the Council Diggers and the Marton Invitation XI. Due to the school holidays, both teams were struggling with only eight a side and it was agreed the match was to be reduced to 25 overs per innings. The Diggers won the toss and elected to bat with Craig Wason and Billy Dukes opening. Craig was out in the second over of the day, caught by John O’Neal off Zane Stallan’s bowling for a duck. Steve Law was next in and the score reached 34 when Billy was caught and bowled by Dom Aprile for 12. Shaun Law joined his
New shooter does well
LAST Wednesday’s Sunset Shoot was a 45-shot Service Pistol Match. Mal scored 407 to take out first position, second went to a new shooter Steve whose score of 313 was very good for his first pistol match. Peter took out third with a score of 310. old man in the middle and made seven runs before hitting a catch to Mick Serginson off the bowling of Adam Snell. This brought stand-in skipper Scott Stallan to the crease, who along with Lawsy, belted the Marton attack all over the park for an amazing 172 run partnership. Steve was finally out for 57, stumped by Brett Pickup off the bowling of Ray Willis with the score on 218. Dana Law joined Scotty for the final over and took the total to 229 after the allotted 25 overs. Scott remained not out with a brilliant 109. After a delicious lunch courtesy of Katrina, Helen and Carol, Marton opened with Dom and Snelly. Five overs had been bowled before Dom’s luck ran out as he was caught by Adam Egel off Lawsy’s bowling for 12. Mick was next and along with his skipper Snelly, started to get the run rate back on track. Dana was the bowler who struck next, having Mick well caught by Adam for 19.
Zane joined Snelly in the middle and together put on a very healthy partnership. Billy took a good catch to remove Zane for 23, off the bowling of Steve. Snelly was eventually out for a fighting 75 and the chase was over, bowled by Craig. The last couple of batsmen were clean bowled by
Shaun, giving the Law family a total of five wickets. Marton simply ran out of overs as they reached a total of 187. Scott was Man of the Match with his batting heroics. A great day was had by all yet again and a big thank you to all who helped around the ground to make it such.
This weekend should be Hope Vale against Marton and is the last game of the regular season. The semi final between BMP and Council will be played on October 13 due to the Rainforest Cup the week before. The Grand Final will be on the following weekend, all things going well.

Elite Hashers kept happy with gravel pit run WET Check and Titus decided a gravel pit run on toilet paper would be enough to keep the small band of elite Hashers happy. A recent fire made travelling through the bush easier and the trail markers of good old toilet paper could be spotted a mile away. The only other life forms apart from Hashers were the spiders with webs like cargo nets slung everywhere around the bush. Apart from a few washouts, the run was on the flat and you had the feeling that you were miles from anywhere it was so quiet and peaceful. Back at Titus and Wet Check’s we
had nibblies and a bonfire, and with Titus as GM, we had charges galore. Archives, Hot dog and Goldylocks had a welcome back. Nostrildumass had one for his rhino charm, Cracklin for pawing Titus. Titus for having issues, Oyster for a demolition derby, Granddad for red eyeing Oyster. Fakawe for her black boa cockup. Sew Easy for a counting black out, Xmas for a bit of spouse abuse,. Last of all Wet Check for being grumpy.Titus had a nerve to charge that,
but he likes living dangerously! Then the food was served chicken, mash and veg followed by sweets to die for. Diets were abandoned and waist bands expanded as another Hash night came to an end. Next week, Hash is at Sew Easy’s and it is a 65 carton run. Hash meets every Monday at 5.30 pm. The run (walk) lasts about an hour if you wish to join us. Contact 4069 5180 for more details. stableford competition
LAST week’s Italian Restaurant Weekly Stableford competition attracted a small field of members and our local “Boy In Blue”, John McArthur was the winner for the week with his score of 38 points. In the Runner-up was Ron Beacroft with 35. Bunker The scheduled Honeycombes Cairns 2-Person Ambrose competition was changed to a Stableford, which saw a 3-way count back for first place between Andy Daly, Steve Butler and Marilyn Clark who all finished their round of 18 with a score of 33 points. Andy Daly was deemed the winner with Marilyn Clark the runner-up. All the nearest-the-pins were landed with new member, Logan Idiens taking out 2/11, Andy Daly for 14 and Steve Butler for 9/18. All of the winners, including the NTP winners, please see me to select your prize as the prizes were donated by Honeycombes Cairns. Logan Idiens and Steve Butler were the only members to compete in the Cape York Tyres Sunday 9-Hole Stroke competition. Steve won the day with a nett score of 33 for the front 9. This week’s Italian Restaurant Weekly Stroke competition is being played off the white tees and no one has played as yet. This Saturday’s competition is being sponsored by the Cooktown Newsagency and the competition is a Par. Thanks Carol and Ian for sponsoring the event. All sponsorship provided by businesses and individuals is very appreciated. Just a reminder to members the Club currently has a raffle going and you can purchase tickets from the Club House. The raffle is valued at over $120. Up for grabs is a $100 Cleveland Classic HB Putter and a dozen TaylorMade RocketBallz. Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5. This raffle is being drawn on October 26, so get your tickets now. Also available for purchase is a $2 ticket in the 100 Club. We have only filled half the numbers, so as soon as all numbers are purchased, $100 is up for grabs for the winner. Happy golfing everyone. Kelly Barnett, Manager Cooktown Golf Links.
Was that a drive or dribble?
Guess who? A player who had a round during the week, teed off the 14th and managed to hit the dead tree on the right, dead centre - only to have the ball come flying back towards the tee and land about 15 metres in front! The player then took a second shot at ball, only for it to do the same again! Another guess who? Player teeing off the 15th thought the stroke was fantastic and was looking way into the distance to see the ball but couldn’t locate it. Reason why you ask? The ball had just managed to roll off the tee and not go anywhere!

Chat with Matt G’day again, \ Well, after three seasons, this will be my last “Chat”, because next season I’m off to the Old Dart to play for Wigan. While I’ve made it clear before that I would have preferred to have played out my career as a one-club man with the Cowboys, I’ve also had it in the back of my mind that if that wasn’t possible, I’d enjoy a stint playing for an English club. So getting a start with a club with Wigan’s pedigree is a huge bonus, one I’m very excited about. Even though our NRL season only finished a couple of weeks ago, I’m feeling really fresh, almost like a kid starting my career all over again. Although my contract there is for a year, with a year’s option after that, playing there offers me a whole new set of challenges like dealing with the weather, the different sorts of playing fields, different coaching techniques and playing styles, and, of course, different refereeing. We’re not heading to Wigan until January next year, so we’ll have plenty of time before I meet coach Shaun Wane and my new team mates to have a rest and catch up with family and friends. Hopefully, I’ll get home in time for the John Bowen Memorial All Blacks Carnival, that’s always a great time for me to be with family in the environment we love so much - rugby league. And it’s a great carnival, with lots of entertaining football for the families, supporters and spectators who get along to watch. Talking about family, I’m very lucky to have my partner, Rudi, who has supported me for so long in my footy career, and once again she is whole-heartedly supporting the move to England. In fact, she’s really looking forward to it. It’s going to be a great adventure for her, me and our kids, Diaz and MJ. Back to the NRL, and I’ve been asked who my tips are for the grand final. Well, I have to say I think the Roosters are going to be very hard to beat. You cannot discount the Rabbitohs who were the season’s benchmark for so long, but the Roosters have proven to me in recent times that they’re the team to beat. Anyway, before I go, while I’ve only been having a chat with the Cooktown Local News for three seasons, I’d like to thank everyone up there for all their support during that time and since I first started with the Cowboys way back then. I’ve really appreciated it; it’s meant a lot to me. - Matt Bowen.

Meet our footy tipping winner Wayne Hunt < aka Wombat_101
Above: Cooktown Local News/ Hinterland Aviation/Inn Cairns footy tipping competition winner Wayne Hunt. RIGHT: Hinterland Aviation sent their congratulations as well. AN early good start to the Cooktown Local News/Hinterland Aviation/Inn Cairns NRL footy tipping competition is what Wombat_101, also known as Wayne Hunt, attributed to his win. Wayne’s first prize is three nights’ accommodation at Inn Cairns and a return flight from Cooktown to Cairns with Hinterland Aviation. “I got off to a good start and was able to stay in front after that,” Wayne said. “It got a bit close towards the end and I was a bit worried, but it all worked out in the end.” Successful footy tipping runs in the Hunt family though, because hot on Wayne’s heels was his wife, Jacynta, aka The Fantastic Mrs
Fox, who just happened to be the winner of the 2011 competition. Jacynta actually tied for second with Beagleb2, but was awarded the $250 cash prize, from Cooktown Local News, for second on a count-back. But Chris Vela, whose alter-ego is Beagleb2, will not leave the competition empty handed, with the Cooktown Local News deciding to award him a $125 cash prize which would have been his share of the second prizemoney. “That’s very generous, I’m really thrilled,” Chris said when he was advised of the decision.
Crocs win Three Rivers title in a thriller
THE Cooktown Crocs have taken out the title as the 2013 Three Rivers Rugby premiers after a real “nail biter” at John Street Oval on Friday night, when they defeated the Wujal Wujal Yindili 38-32. Originally scheduled as a round-robin competition to be played between the Crocs, the Yindili, the Hope Vale Red Soil Rebels and the Hope Vale Backstreet Warriors, the “grand final” tournament was reduced to a two-team, one-game affair when neither Hope Vale side turned up - again without advising organisers or the other teams of their intentions of forfeiting. But rather than dwell on what has been a bitterly disappointing season for the competition, Three Rivers President Peter Scott preferred to highlight the positives of the grand final. “It was an absolute ‘pearler’ of a game,” he said. “It was fantastic attacking football at its
best, with play flowing from end to end, with neither side really gaining the ascendency until right at the end.” Scott said that with little football played this year because of forfeits, it was not long before the fatigue factor set in to both teams. “Those blokes didn’t worry about not being fit,” he said. “They started the game at a cracking pace and tried to keep it up the whole way through. “Just when you thought one side was down and out, they’d pick themselves up again and get right back into it.” He said that not only was the game a real showcase for senior rugby league in the region, it was an inspiring display of raw guts and determination by the combatants. “They played themselves into physical exhaustion. It was a real display of courage from all who played, a real pleasure to watch.”
