Cooktown to get better weather service COOKTOWN and the marine community in Northeast Queensland are set to benefit from the Bureau of Meteorology’s improving marine weather services. The two large forecast zones from Torres Strait to Cardwell will be split into three smaller zones namely, Peninsula Coast (Sharp Point to Cape Melville), Cooktown Coast (Cape Melville to Cape Tribulation) and Cairns Coast (Cape Tribulation to Cardwell). Torres Strait will now get a separate 4-day forecast. The services started yesterday, Wednes-

Wind warnings will now be included within the Coastal Waters forecast. The forecasts will be updated every six hours whenever warnings are current to ensure boaters can plan the safety of their trips using the latest information. Adrian Davidson, AMSA Maritime Advisor said: “Torres Strait is set to get its own

weather predictions, which will be a great thing for Traditional Inhabitant Boat Owners as well as improving the safety of larger boats and ships transiting the area.” From mid-2014, detailed point and click marine forecast maps will become available on the Bureau’s website. The graphical viewer called MetEye will allow mariners to generate a 7-day forecast for any location. More information on the improving weather services for Queensland is available on the Bureau’s website.

 letters to the editor Group seeks more transparent process I was invited to attend the “Public Information Forum” that was advertised in last week’s Cooktown Local News to be held on Tuesday, October 8 at the Events Centre from 6 to 7.30pm and to speak on behalf of the Safe Water for Cooktown People. I do not see myself as an industry expert or group leader. I am one of many people who are advocates for Safe Water locally, as well as across the state. The Queenslanders for Safe Water Air and Food, FNQ Branch and its Sub Branch Safe Water for Cooktown, accepted the invitation to speak and we will appoint a suitably experienced person to speak on our behalf at this forum. (Also see the article in this week’s paper about the history of the Far North Queensland Anti-Fluoridation Movement.)

Premier Newman has made Fluoride non-mandatory for the people of Queensland, and has asked people to consult with their local councils on the issue of fluoride in their local water supplies. Many Councils, in response to their constituents’ concerns, have now taken steps to reverse the undemocratic decision that was forced upon them, and have decommissioned the fluoridation plants installed within their jurisdictions. It is unfortunate that this issue has generated comments from persons within Queensland Health, that denigrate the honest attempts of members of the community to protect their freedom of choice in relation to medication. I refer, of course, to recent statements by Dr. Michael Foley, who referred to opponents of fluoridation as, “scare mongering eccentric

fringe groups”. Whilst the Safe Water for Cooktown people accept the Cook Shire Councils invitation to speak on behalf of the 545 petition signatories that were lodged with the Cook Shire Council on August 13, 2013 we are unsure that the proposed forum will adequately inform people of the pros and cons of fluoridation, particularly when there is no provision for questions to

Call for rock art to be protected Photo: Tourism and Events Queensland Traditional and ancient rock art may prove to be at risk due to potential diamond mining by Gina Rinehart’s Jacaranda Minerals having been granted an exploratory license. As many people know often land owners, say of cattle stations, own the land but not always what’s underneath it i.e. minerals rights. This means that any prospecting firm or mining company who has been granted an exploratory license can search the land you own for minerals and then apply, if the find is successful, for a mining license which would mean your land being mined without you needing to provide consent. Nothing has been decided yet and Jacaranda Minerals have already said they have no interest in including the limestone cliffs and caves near the Laura and Lakeland regions, which are home to sacred sites and ancient Aboriginal rock art, should they ever commence mining. Traditional Owners have accepted this compromise, however, are skeptical that this decision will stand

be asked on the evening in response to the information given by the speakers. Surely people have the right to question what has been said, and/or seek clarification of various issues. By definition, a “forum” is an avenue for people to discuss issues and reach conclusions based upon these discussions. What you have proposed is a carefully orchestrated information evening with no avenue for people to explore the issues. Obviously we have reservations about the way this forum has been organised to deliver the community consultation/information evening, and would welcome a more open and transparent process. the test of time and they remain concerned that even if it does, that vibrations from controlled explosions and mining activity could damage and destroy the fragile limestone formations. Cape York definitely needs to diversify the local economy and provide more opportunities for locals to gain employment and enjoy a modern age quality of life. There are ways to utilise the environment in non-irreversible ways which can give back to the people of those regions. It is a fallacy to assume that UNESCO World Heritage Listing is the only process by which to secure the safety and sanctity of cultural sites such as areas where there are rock art paintings of tens of thousands of years old, as the Federal Government can nominate areas for protection themselves and more effectively by discussing one on one with Traditional Owners as to where in particular. Jacaranda Minerals need to come to the table and lobby the government in partnership with the Traditional Owners to ensure a compromise which

includes prospective mining but also the continued protection of ancient sites such as these are continuously protected and remain unharmed. The next few months and years could see a positive working and respectful relationship between mining companies and Traditional Owners but only if the big companies are prepared to accept cultural wealth alongside economic wealth. If this doesn’t happen then the Federal Government need to see that some things we cannot get back and ancient art is one of those things and without relying on UNESCO, to step in. Egypt has never jeopardised their ancient art which lives in the realm of the environment and neither should Australia. I call for industry and cultural preservationists to actively reach a compromise which is honest and will be upheld and I am calling for the importance of saving these ancient artworks to be paramount in any future planning. A question for the Fluoride Forum. There are many outdoor workers in tropical Cooktown (including Council workers) and they can consume upwards of 10 - 12 litres of water per day. If the water was fluoridated these workers would be receiving an overdose of fluoride and could expect to have some skeletal fluorosis within 20 years. What steps have the Council made to protect their own out-door workers and other community out-door workers? Barry Noyce Cooktown.

Cairns Regional Council / Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council Bloomfield River Briodge and approaches. CONSTRUCTION materials have already been shipped to Wujal Wujal in readiness for a start on the long-awaited Bloomfield River Bridge – expected to commence some time this week. Member for Cook David Kempton has advised that substantial completion is expected to occur by December, with an opening date for the structure planned for February, weather permitting. “The bridge will be built to Q2 – the height of the approaches,” Mr Kempton said. “It will only be flooded at high tide for a

short period in a Q2 flood event.” In the Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council newsletter, residents were advised that that more than $11M project will be completed by TCS Civil and Building Pty Ltd. A site office will be located beside the Bana Yirriji Arts and Cultural Centre, while there will also be a concrete batching plant located on spare land on the right side of the road near the batching plant for the storage of construction items. Construction items will also be stored on the former football field site.

The newsletter advised that Mayor Clifford Harrigan has already met with the contractor to discuss community protocols and the community benefit program. Council will also enter into agreements with the contractor for meal provision, plant hire, service delivery and a joint venture to extend the footpath program to the new pedestrian crossing on the bridge. Community information sessions will be held during the construction period. The old Bloomfield crossing will be removed when the bridge construction is completed.

Walker Bay “on the nose”

“I could see a lot more rubbish and a worse toilet situation further in front of where I took the photo,” said the local who asked not to be identified.

The spokesman said with a shire the size of Cook, council did not have the human resources at its disposal to properly supervise all of the camping sites and its camping laws. “We rely heavily on locals advising us of situations like this,” he said. “This is the first we’ve heard of it, but we’ve already sent officers down to inspect the site to decide what we need to do to clean it up.” And he said that council’s Environmental Health team are currently involved in other duties at Coen. The spokesman has asked the public notify them as soon as these sorts of occurrences present themselves.

“But I couldn’t get close enough to get other photos.

“If we get complaints like this, we will act on them immediately,” he said.

“The campers there have been there for over a week, but council doesn’t seem too worried about policing the area.”

“But if we don’t know about them, we cannot act.

With no toilet or rubbish facilities available at the location, it has not only been “eyesore issues” that have been brought under the microscope, but health concerns also. Alerted to the situation by the Cooktown Local News, a Cook Shire Council said it was the first council had heard about the situation.

THIS week’s winner of the $25 meat voucher in the Cornett’s IGA Cooktown and Cooktown Local News competition is yet another National Geographic quality image taken by one of our local amateur photographers using fairly basic equipment. Geoff Gerhardt’s spectacular capture of a Magpie Geese specimen left us in a quandary as to what to name the photo - “Magpie Goose of Magpie Geese” - with the gender of the bird unknown. In the end, Geoff decided on “Magpie Geese”. Asked about the colour in the bird’s feathers, Geoff said, “With the sunlight in the right place, it brings out the different hues in the plumage and I just had the right light.” Photographers are reminded they now have until 5pm today, October 3 to submit their entries for this week’s stage of the competition. Geoff’s winning entry will be printed and displayed in a gallery the IGA has prepared in their store.

Anti-fluoride group history explained By RHONDA-JOY HOLLAND MANY “Safe Water for Cooktown” members recently joined with the Queenslanders for Safe Water Air and Food, FNQ Branch, as a Sub Branch, and are now inviting people from the Cooktown area to join this community organisation. The formation of the QSWA&F, and the initial Far North Queensland Anti-Fluoridation Movement is an important story to tell about Primary Community Development. The Anti-Fluoride Alliance of FNQ was formed in 2005, when Bill Kilvert returned from Brisbane after attending the annual ALP State Conference as a delegate from FNQ. Worried that the oral health platform had been amended by adding the words “... and to encourage local councils to fluoridate their water supplies.” The Anti-Fluoride Alliance of FNQ formed in response to the change in direction of ALP policy to a Pro Fluoride stance and the Alliance began providing information to the public and all the ALP members in State Parliament about the true lack of effectiveness of fluoridation, potential risks and ethi-

cal concerns with forced mass medication. In 2005 -2006, Bill helped with the formation of the “Queenslanders Against Water Fluoridation” in Brisbane and the local Cairns group, which then became the Far North Queensland Branch of the QAWF. Later, more people were drawn into the organisation at a public meeting held in Cairns in February 2009, with over 150 citizens attending. The management committee then swelled to sixteen, consisting of two Cairns councillors, two naturopaths, a doctor, a nurse, a dental nurse, five business people and four public servants. The Brisbane group amalgamated with a Gold Coast group, and the name was changed to “Queenslanders for Safe Water Air & Food Inc.” and Ms Merilyn Haines is the current Director of this organisation. The FNQ group then became the FNQ Branch of this new organisation. Currently, there are more than 1000 members and supporters in the FNQ branch, with numbers consistently increasing. When the Newman LNP State Government came to power, Werner Schmidlin, Chairperson of the QSWA&F, FNQ Branch actively lobbied

the new State LNP Member for Barron River, Michael Trout. Michael then took up the fight inside the Government, which in late 2012, resulted in the end of ending mandated fluoridation, giving decision making on fluoridation back to communities. In December 2012, QSWA&F, FNQ members lobbied the Cairns councillors. Cr Linda Cooper was already a QSWA&F member. In late January 2013 , the Cairns Council voted 9 – 1 to end water fluoridation on the basis its decision on the policy of the Local Government Association of Queensland that fluoridation shouldn’t be forced on people. The QSWA&F is afilliated with the Fluoride Action Network in Australia and Internationally.

Students trade big smoke for Bama camp fire smoke A GROUP of female students from Brisbane’s St Rita’s College Clayfield and Hobart’s St Mary’s College have left the cloistered halls of their educational institutions for a taste of Indigenous life and culture in Far North Queensland. Hosted recently by the Bana Yarralji peo-

“They’ve been immersing themselves in the day-to-day routine to maximise their experience here,” he said. “And it’s also been an interchange of cultures too.” Kate Sparshott, another Red Earth Connections Trip Leader

said their visit was not all one-way traffic, with the visitors prepared to give something in return for their experience. “We asked Mary what she would like us to do in return,” Kate said. “And she said she wanted a “chook” pen built, so that’s what we’re doing today.” After their stay at Shiptons Flat, the group will travel to Hope Vale for a day and then on to Elim Beach for some more camping. Bana Yarralji Elder Mary Wallace said that students have been hosted for about three years now. “We’ve had locals, James Cook University students, CSIRO researchers and high school students here,” she said.

Mystery surrounds unconscious man at Festival POLICE have been left at odds as to how a male person found unconscious on the access road into the Wallaby Creek Festival grounds came to be in that state on Saturday. The man was found in possession of a large amount of money, so an attempted robbery has been discounted as the cause. And with him either unable or unwilling to divulge the reasons for his state, the incident will remain a mystery. A police unit assisted Queensland Ambulance Service officers in retrieving the man and transporting him to the Cooktown Hospital. The nature of his injuries and his condition, is still at this stage, unknown. Other than the man’s injury, police reported an oth-

gowns, Nancy’s a gorgeous cascade of lacy frills and Paula’s an elegant silk that showed off her lovely young figure perfectly. Both Nancy Yi Sun and Paula Lu chose to play very difficult works from their large repertoires. Nancy, who arrived in Sydney from China only four years ago, included a brief eighteenth century Sonata by Scarlatti, followed by the fear-

somely difficult Spanish Rhapsody by Liszt and, after interval, one of Beethoven’s most beautiful compositions, the Waldstein Sonata. The audience was rapt. Paula Lu, who has lived in Sydney all her life, gave an outstanding performance of Schumann’s Kinderszenen (a collection of short pieces for children), and also his second piano sonata (which is rarely

performed). Schumann’s piano music is far more complex than is immediately apparent and requires intense study, otherwise it makes no sense to the listener. Paula has mastered a beautiful technique and her interpretation of Schumann’s compositions shows deep understanding and musicianship. A night to remember!

Water Fluoridation is Forced Mass Medication Water Fluoridation is the injection of fluoride releasing chemicals into public drinking water to treat people in an attempt to try to prevent tooth decay. Most countries (95% of world’s population) do NOT fluoridate their drinking water yet have equivalent oral health to the few heavily fluoridated countries (WHO dental data).

Fluoridation is mass medication with NO prior health assessment & NO informed consent by individuals. NO control over dose (only your thirst determines how much fluoride you ingest). NO follow up — ever! Water Fluoridation does to a whole community what a Doctor should NEVER do to a single patient—force a medication on them. When fluoride chemicals are added to everyone’s drinking water, it is difficult to avoid ingesting fluoride. Individuals are denied the right to Informed Consent with a medication.

HISTORY

140 Years On...

Buildings replace tents as rush heats up CONTINUING the story of the events which led to the establishment of Cooktown 140 years ago. On board the Leichhardt was a survey party under Mr Macmillan, the Engineer for Roads in the Northern Division, Mr Howard St George, the mining warden designate for the new field, with a party of mounted police, and between fifty to sixty miners. The steamer arrived at the Endeavour River the day after Dalrymple, on October 25, 1873. Within three days, the survey party began the survey of the route to the Palmer River, accompanied by St George and most of the mounted police and miners. Remaining at the Endeavour were a few police under the command of a sergeant, and possibly a few merchants. Within days, other ships began arriving with other miners, store keepers, tradespersons and the like. Once the harbour was surveyed on October 31, 1873 the Leichhardt departed for Brisbane. Dalrymple reported that when he left there was: “a lively little seaport gleaming with white tents and noisily busy with workmen, where a week before we had found a silent wilderness”. The intention of most who arrived on the SS Leichhardt, on October 25, 1873 was to move on to the Palmer River as quickly as possible. The miners were of course hoping to be still early enough to get onto “good ground”, while Howard St George was anxious to commence his role as the initial Gold Warden.

MacMillan on the other hand, had two choices first to let the other two groups go off as best they could while he and his party commenced to survey and build a road to the goldfield, or accompany the others and head directly for the Palmer. He chose the latter. His road making party remained at the Endeavour River assisting Sgt Armstrong and his five police constables in erecting pre-fabricated buildings that were to be used for government stores and the first police station, and also assist in clearing the mangroves to establish an initial landing site. While the rush from the Endeavour was being conducted, hundreds were streaming into the Palmer area from Georgetown and other places further south, such as Cardwell and Townsville. These people, miners and business people, were trekking overland, making their own roads as they went. By September 13, 1873, Mr Charters, the Gold Commissioner for Georgetown, reported that about 300 people had left for the Palmer, carrying about 40 tons of goods with them, including two billiard tables. By the end of September it was estimated that over 600 people were on the field. The situation on the Palmer field was developing as predicted, hundreds of people were now located in a very remote place, with limited provisions and with the wet season fast approaching. Ship after ship came into the Endeavour River, offloading mostly men,

horses, provisions and building material. Within weeks buildings began to replace the initial tents along the track to the Palmer. MacMillan’s survey only set out the initial street (Charlotte St). In 1874, another survey

was conducted, this time setting out town blocks and other streets, and many found their businesses in the middle of roads, or spanning two or more blocks.  continued next week

The source of peace From the Pulpit Philippians 4:6-7 IT is one of modern culture’s great tragedies: what many people seek and work so hard to achieve is, contrary to what they believe, not a product of all their accomplishments and effort. Millions of people

are turning the world upside down looking for peace, while never realizing that the “genuine article” is simply not of this world. Money can’t buy it; success and fame can never guarantee it. Until you have peace with God, you will never experience inner serenity at all. But here’s the good news: since genuine peace is not dependent upon outward circumstances, it is possible to experience a tranquility beyond our comprehension, even in the midst of life’s most difficult trials.

But this real peace isn’t possible unless there exists absolutely no impediment between us and God - and the only way the barrier of sin and self can be removed is by means of the cross of Jesus Christ. If we’d simply bring our struggles and needs to the foot of the cross, we would find an abundant source of peace. A heart at rest is not rooted in some worldly principle or philosophy; it can be realised only through an intimate relationship with the person of Jesus Christ (Eph. 2:14-16).

The Devil will take every opportunity to destroy our calm by drawing attention away from Christ to things that may seem important at the time but in reality have no purpose other than to distract. Don’t waste your life looking for peace in all the wrong places - just remember, the Prince of Peace is its only true source. Have week!

Australia’s heaviest drinkers are drinking more, study finds VERY heavy drinking among Australia’s most-frequent consumers of alcohol has increased over the past decade, one study has found, while women are drawing level with men in terms of consumption rates, according to another study, theguardian.com reports. A study by Dr Michael Livingston, a post-doctoral research fellow at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, found that the top 10 per cent of heaviest drinkers in Australia are

now consuming between 4-5 per cent more alcohol than a decade ago. This is despite an overall fall in drinking rates through a rise in the number of people abstaining from drink or cutting back on consumption. Australia’s heavy drinkers are classified as those who consume more than 3000 standard drinks a year, or around 60 a week. A separate study by Dr Catherine Chapman and associate professor Tim Slade found that longstanding differences be-

tween men and women have virtually vanished. The research found that while men born in the early 20th century drank more than three times the amount of women, this gap has narrowed dramatically. Women born in the

1990s are now almost as likely as men to drink alcohol. Chapman said that the shift is also evident in rates of heavy drinking and binge drinking. Livingston told Guardian Australia that the research shows a conflicted

pattern of drinking in Australia. “It goes against what we thought about alcohol consumption, where if the rate goes down, we all shift together,” he said. “The big question is why this is happening.

I think there has been a lot of media attention on the issue but it’s not quite sinking in with some people. “Overall, we are seeing a lot in the media about the harmful effects of drinking, as well as things like FebFast and Dry July. There has been

an overall shift in thinking about drinking. “We know that heavy drinkers respond to changes in price, so a minimum price or extra tax could have an impact. “Also, an intervention from a health professional can also be helpful.”

“The Time to Dream” They’ll say, “Your life has just begun! You’re forty now. Three cheers! Your troubles are all left behind. There’s no more time for tears! Your girls will soon be off your hands to live lives of their own. You’ve now got money in the bank and no more housing loan.” We both know that’s a load of naught but take the time to think. Just close your eyes and dream a while and have another drink. Then let your mind go for a drift, upon the starlight stream, And float along there with the moon. You need the time to dream. Just think about the good times that are gone and still to come. Just think about the work and play of life’s all busy hum. Just close those sparkling eyes of yours and wear that lovely smile. Then think about the years gone by and mediate a while. Your friends of yesteryear will come to cheer you on your way. Your old school friends will stand around with yarns of yesterday. Then as you quietly drift along, upon the full moon’s beam, That lovely smile of yours will prove you need the time to dream. Yes, dreaming is a pastime that our busy world has lost; With stress attacks and broken hearts all measured in the cost. So dream, my lovely lady, and don’t ever lose that smile. It’s so intoxicating, Dear, you’re winning by a mile! You’ve touched so many people with your kindness and your wit But now you’ve hit “the big four-o”, perhaps, slow down a bit But never tire of staring where the moon and stars all gleam. Then close those lovely eyes and smile. You need the time to dream. By JIM EGAN

IT can be challenging in the garden this time of year with the increasingly hotter and dryer conditions, but at the same time quite rewarding. Whilst water is at a premium for those on the town metered supply, if we water smarter, then the cost of keeping things growing can be minimised. Encourage deeper rooting by watering for longer, but perhaps not as often. For instance watering for 20 minutes every other day of the week is not as beneficial as watering once a week for a solid hour or more.

Obviously watering in the early morning or late afternoon and evening is far more beneficial than the evaporation that can occur during the heat of the day. Mulching is a fantastic way to reduce evaporation from the ground as the sun gets hotter and the wind gets dryer - it simply prevents moisture being drawn out of the earth. Build up the soil with organic matter, and use organic slow-

release fertilisers for best results. Chemical fertilisers will give a short sharp spurt in growth via the release of nutrients, then the plant will be searching for moisture. If none is available the new growth wilts. Slow-release enables a more even demand for moisture and a more measured growth consistent with the slower drip-like feeding. Grouping plants together that have similar watering requirements is also a good idea. Having a feature garden of succulents, bromeliads and dry land natives such as grevilleas that require less water is better than having them dotted out among other more water reliant plants. Other ideas that can minimise your water consumption in the garden include the use of grey water, although check with the local council regarding any bylaws that you may have to adhere to. Also, water crystals and wetting agents can help retain moisture for plants as well. Another problematic symptom

of the hotter and dryer conditions is that our plants are more susceptible to pests and diseases the more vulnerable and the more stressed that they become. Such things to look out for are mealy bug – little fuzzy white sticky hairy things, scale – small shell-covered sap-suckers, spiralling white fly – which is another sap sucker and not an actual fly and caterpillars and grasshopper can also get hungry this time of year. To deter such pests, white oil can do the trick, but a simple homemade remedy may be just as effective. A mix of vegetable oil, soap flakes and water can be used, but be sure not to spray foliage in the heat of the day as the plant will burn. Also, molasses can be added as lots of chewers and suckers of our backyard plants do not like the taste. The rewards are those fantastic flowering trees, the frangipani, and the yellow cassia amongst others, and I’ve noticed the first early poinciana flowers on the tree in the church yard next door to the IGA.

I’m so glad to have arrived here in Singapore, and to be part of - excuse me, my colleague is trying to tell me something... ah, I see... to have arrived here in Indonesia and to be part of a team focused on impressing you with Australia’s point of view. May I introduce Julie here No, I think you misunderstand. That’s not Mrs Abbott. Yes, it is rather

a relief, isn’t it? She’s a minister in my new government. Yes, really. Well, we had to appoint a woman you know, and she’s the closest thing we have. Not exactly, no. I haven’t appointed a Minister for buying secondhand fishing boats yet. Yes, of course. I quite understand. Indonesia has all the best deals in low mileage, used boats. No, I wouldn’t go anywhere else to buy one, and thank you so much for putting me in touch with your friend Mr Suprono. Now, I’m sure you don’t want to spend the afternoon talking about refugee policy... I see. You would be happy to spend the afternoon that way. Well - um - actually

I don’t know very much about refugees. Julie is the expert. Would you like to spend the afternoon with her? I thought not. So - let’s talk about other things, like trade. I have brought 20 leading Australian businessmen with me. Here is my friend Mike. He’s the head of our ANZ bank. What would you to talk about, Mike? I’m sorry Mr President. I’m sure Mike has had a small memory loss. What would you like to talk about Mike, and if you say refugees again I will personally give you such a ding around the ear... Of course, he would like to talk about trade. And corruption. Look, Mike, I’m sure Mr President does not want to talk

about corruption. Oh, he does. I see. Well, Senator Brandis and Minister Joyce are not actually businessmen. They’re politicians, so that’s all right, isn’t it? Our businessmen do not like corruption, do they, Mike? You misunderstand, Mr President. Mike is from a private sector bank. The one trying to deals with Saddam Hussein was the Reserve Bank of Australia. Completely different. Yes, I suppose I could pass Mr Suprono’s card on to them. They might be interested in used fishing boats... An irreverent, satirical (and totally fictional) comment upon the issues of life, by our faceless correspondent.

Along the BLOOMFIELD TRACK Pioneers on the Track

Story and photos by MIKE D’ARCY A memorial plaque was erected last Sunday on a rock alongside the Bloomfield Track overlooking the Coral Sea. The plaque was erected to commemorate the pioneers and their endeavours. A part of history.

“It took 10 weeks to build the Track, then it took the Council another 16 years to finish the job” the Track, then it took the Council another 16 years to finish the job”.

Forty-five years ago, the original Bloomfield Track was blazed and built by the Baileys Creek Cape Tribulation Development League. Last weekend at Cape Tribulation, the history was re-told many times over a happy campfire.

For most of its route, the Track took the same path as today’s iconic Track. However, it started on the Cape Tribulation Beach, climbed up a steep stretch to the existing road, then took a different path over Cowie Range, avoiding the dangerous Woobadda Creek, by going down a northerly ridge-line to Thompsons Creek.

Original road builder John Norris and two original pioneers Pat and brother Colin Mason, Wayne Mason, Greg Nicholas (son of pioneer John Nicholas) joined with original members and families at Cape Tribulation for a weekend of reminiscing and celebration. Pat Mason said that: “It took 10 weeks to build

Bloomfield River, looking at old grazing land, an early 1900 dairy farm at the top of Cowie Range, and the old sawmill and Sugar Wharf on the Bloomfield River.

“It was used by the Cape Trib residents as well as the Wujal Wujal community and people from Helensvale and Rossville as a quicker access route to the south and Cairns.”

On more recent news, Professor Reynolds and a team of Queensland scientists claim that after many years of research, tea tree oil has a positive effect both in preventing dengue fever and in stopping the spread of the dengue virus. It does this by building up the immune system. The product is specifically from Melaleuca Alternifolia and has been approved by the Australian and US Therapeutic Goods Authorities.

The group drove along the current Track to the

However, please be aware that the research

model has also been questioned by other scientists. Naturally, paperbarks/ melaleucas have had many traditional uses (colds, wounds, coughs) by Indigenous people, including the Kuku Yalanji Rainforest people. There are over 130 species in the Melaleuca family. Five of these have been found to have beneficial properties and are used in the preparation of treatment oils, often referred to commercially as “tea tree oil”. Some of these have toxins and are definitely not suitable for human consumption. Therefore, don’t even think of distilling your own tea tree oil as a dengue cure, as it will probably not have the correct ingredients or be

processed correctly. Keatings Lagoon is getting better for bird life as it slowly dries up, and birds, including the magpie geese range further along the lagoon. The waterlilies have matured and are flowering strongly. The Bloomfield Track has been extremely dusty - the beautiful sunny weather and the Wallaby Creek Festival have turned the trees an eerie shade of red. Parts of the Bloomfield Track, especially up Donavans Range from the north, are very corrugated. Be aware! WHAT is the connection between “Hannibal Lecter” and ‘Bara Brith’ fruit loaf? Bara Brith translates to ‘speckled bread’ and is a traditional welsh fruit loaf made with tea. I had the good fortune to live for over ten years in the beautiful part of North Wales called “Llandudno”; pronounced ‘Clan dudno’ with the 3560 metre peak of the Snowdonia range as the backdrop. “Hannibal Lecter” played by Sir Anthony Hopkins in the Silence of the Lambs - a Welsh-born Oscar winner has donated millions in saving the Snowdonia range and making the 4000 acre site a national trust instead of being sold off to developers. So, on behalf of the Welsh heritage and the delightful Jen Hall, (Art teacher, Cooktown State School) who loves everything welsh... I would like to share with you this week, a traditional, easy to make and delicious to eat recipe for “Bara Brith”. “Mwynhewch eich bwyd (moin+hay+oock aikh boo+eed) “Enjoy your food”, and “Iechyd da” (yech+id dah) “Cheers!” (Good health). 350 ml cold strained tea 350g self-raising flour 350g mixed dried fruit 175g muscavado sugar 1 tsp. mixed spice 1 medium sized free-range egg

2 tbsp. orange juice 1 tbsp. orange zest 1 tbsp. honey (extra honey for glazing) Method: Place the mixed fruit into a bowl; pour over the cold tea and sugar and leave to soak overnight. I find any tea works, but the stronger the brand the richer the cake tastes.

Everything you need for the land, your business and home

The next day, mix together the egg, orange juice, zest and honey and add to the soaked fruit.

Pour the mixture into a greased/non stick/lined loaf tin.

All your building and construction needs including PPE  Plumbing, irrigation and spray equipment and products  Full range of quality brand tools and hardware including Makita  Everything mechanical including pumps, generators, mowers, home appliances.  Small and large scale farming – crop protection Animal health and nutrition products

Bake in a pre-heated oven on gas 3/160c/325f for about 1 ¾ hour.

TGT TRULY IS YOUR ONE STOP SHOP!

Sift in the flour and mixed spice, and then gradually mix all ingredients together.

The loaf should be golden in colour and firm to touch in the middle. Baste with honey whilst still warm. Allow to cool thoroughly before storing in a cake tin. You can substitute the orange for lemon, or replace the honey and orange juice with 2 tablespoons of marmalade, alternatively replace 2 tablespoons of fruit with chopped stemmed ginger. Hope Vale fails to win a game at Gordonvale Story by ALF WILSON A Hope Vale Dhurrbil side contested the Gordonvale Indigenous Rugby League carnival from September 20 to 22.

With little football played during the 2013 Three Rivers’ competition, players were understandably short of match practice and lost all four games. The Hope Vale Dhurrbil

Coach was Dwayne Bowen and trainers were Brenton Bowen and Regan Hart. Hope Vale did perform well though in patches and lost 34-16 to Yarrabah side and ultimate carnival winner Bukki Buna in an early game. For Hope Vale, North

Queensland Cowboys Holden Cup star Javid Bowen scored two tries and booted two goals with Clive Connolly also getting a four pointer. Carnival runners up Descendants rolled Hope Vale 44-20, with Hope Vale scorers in that game being Keithean Bowen, Javid Bowen, Clive Connolly and Richard Ford. Nigel Bowen kicked two goals. In the game against Innisfail Waru, Hope Vale lost 34-16. Hope Vale scorers were Dareen Cobb, Steven Murgha and Keithean Bowen (tries) with goals kicked by Javid Bowen and Nigel Bowen. At the end of the qualifying games, the points total was Bukki Buna 16.5, Descendants 14.5, Innisfail Waru 10, Black Cockatoos 7 and Hope Vale 3. scendants rolled Innisfail Waru 28-18. Bukki Buna beat Descendants 24-20 in the grand final, whilst Innisfail Waru won the plate decider over Black Cockatoos 36-32. Queensland Rugby League Northern Divi-

sion Regional Co-ordinator David Maiden said Hope Vale “had a tough day at the office”, but they did play patches of good footy and troubled teams at times. “They struggled as they haven’t been playing regular footy in Three Rivers this year and they also had to play four games on Saturday as they didn’t get there on time on Friday night,” Maiden said. “Javid Bowen is a class player and was very dangerous all weekend, but didn’t see enough footy.” Carnival awards presented were: Best Back – George Toby, Best Forward – Brandon Tatipata, Top Pointscorer – Fred Koraba, Player of the Carnival – Charles Murgha.

COOKTOWN Crocs are drawn to play Townsville side Ghungalu Warriors, Innisfail Sameway and Barambah from Cherbourg in their first matches of the 2013 Rainforest Cup Indigenous Cricket Carnival at Tully. Twelve sides have been accepted for the carnival which kicks off on October 5 with the finals to be played the following day. The other competing sides are Mareeba, Townsville Falcons, defending champions Mandubarra, Cardwell, Jumbun, Djiru, Yarrabah and Ingan. The draw was conducted at the Tully Support Centre by Tully Cricket association President Allan Payne and a fellow

committee member.

To be played under the exciting Twenty20 format, each team will play three games on October 5 to determine which will participate in the finals.

Which fields the games will be held on has yet to be decided. In the morning games between 8am and 11am, Cooktown will meet Ghungalu Warriors.

reside in Townsville,” Mr Lenoy said.

“The Sameway team is predominantly made up of players from the former Innisfail Redbacks team that played Cooktown in last year’s semi final. “Cooktown won that

match in the last over of that game when Selwyn McIvor hit a six to win. “Barambah are from Cherbourg and made the semi finals last year as well, they are well drilled and probably present Cooktown with their hardest game of the day.”

Last year the Crocs side qualified for the grand final before losing narrowly. They will rely on stars like Selwyn McIvor, Tim Rosendale, Preston Deemal, Errol Kulka, Geoffrey Kulka and Errol Ross-Kelly to go one better this year.

The Crocs take on Sameway in the match which starts at 11.30am, then the Crocs will meet Barambah in the games stating at 3pm. Cooktown Local News asked carnival spokesman Stan Lenoy for a form guide on the Crocs’ three opponents. “Ghungalu Warriors are a team originally from Central Queensland and although most players are from around Rockhampton, they now

School holidays and the wharf is packed!

Main pic: Dillon Glmore on a solid Spanish Mackerel. Inset: Conditions have been picture post card perfect for diving and snorkelling off the reef, with the water clean and clear. Photos submitted. Their better captures have been barra around the 80cm mark and mackerel to 8kgs.

ANGLERS on the Wharf this week have enjoyed some great fishing with mackerel, queenfish, barra and trevally.

Live bait has been the better performing option for most good catches, while mackerel continue to be strong performers off the Wharf, primarily on the morning flood tide using a fine short wire trace with fresh live bait. There have been two outstanding landings of a 125cm and 120cm barra using lures on the upper reaches of the Endeavour

River. The warmer weather is really stirring up the big fish. Please be aware of a reef closure up to and including this Sunday, October 6. The wind has been kind to us over the last few weeks, with many locals getting their boats wet and venturing out to the reefs and their favourite snorkelling sites. With the wind predicted to stay under 15 knots for the short term, offshore conditions remain favourable for boaties as the

reef fish are starting to bite well. People have come back to port with good sized coral trout, red emperor and large mouth nannygai. With the reef waters predominantly clean and clear, anglers and swimmers have been enjoying the famous spectacle, which is our great barrier reef.

Hash Trash fan club – just ring Tanya NOW I have some remarkable news for you - the Hash Trash has a fan club. Well, perhaps it’s not so surprising. After all, you and I know that the Trash is the best thing in the paper. Only the Editor feels the rest is interesting, but he’s paid to think that. So, we have a fan club. If you would like to join, contact Tanya the Membership Secretary at the number below. Or the President (Tanya), General Secretary (Tanya) or Treasurer (also Tanya). Sewezy set this week’s run, which started off up Racecourse Road and went around by Buhmann Street. Everyone commented on how well the trail had been laid, and how there was so much shredded paper that a blind man could not get lost... Ha! That did not last long. The paper density declined as we went down hill to approximately one strand per half kilometre until, somewhere near the cemetery, it disappeared all together. I am surprised the less visually gifted Hashers found their way home at all. Back at the bash, Titus volunteered to act as GM, which was a bit like handing the asylum keys to the inmates. He got into a stand-up argument with Soggy about ignoring the ‘Cut the Dust’ road sign on Buhmann Street (Soggy claimed she did not ignore it because it was obscured by, well, dust). Then he beat up Sweet Xmas for singing a boring song. And Sewezy for running out of paper on the trail. And back to Soggy for checking into a five star hotel in Cairns, but sleeping in her clothes because she had to catch an early plane in the morning. I tell you, we were all relieved when Titus finally sat down and we could get on with the tasty food Sewezy and her daughter had prepared. Tasty tuna for Offal, who has been in the wars and deserves a little coddling, and very tasty chicken curry for the rest of us. Mmm - couldn’t do better in any restaurant in town. Next week’s run will be set by Oyster. Just turn up on Monday at 5.30pm to join in. Call Moses on 4069 5854 or 0409 686 032 for details (and to contact Tanya). On-on! Lye Bak

Beno’s big golf weekend In the Bunker ONLY three members managed to compete in last week’s Italian Restaurant Weekly Stroke competition with Wayne King the winner with a nett score of 63.

The Cooktown Newsagency was the sponsor for last Saturday’s Par competition, which saw a good field of members turn out to compete. Andy Daly was the winner for the day with a score of +2, while a three-way count-back was required between Steve Butler, Marilyn Clark and Beno Welsh for the runner-up place, with Beno being declared the winner. Nearest-the-pins were landed by Andy Daly for

2/11 and Steve Butler for 9/18. No one landed on the green to claim the nearest the pin for 14. A good field turned out to compete in the Cape York Tyres Sunday 9-Hole competition last weekend. Beno Welsh blitzed the field to win the day’s competition with a nett score of 26. A count-back for runnerup was required between Wayne King and John McArthur, who returned nett scores of 30. Wayne was ultimately declared

the winner. Beno is also leading The Italian Restaurant Weekly Stroke competition with a nett score of 60. Wayne King is currently in runner-up place, one stroke behind him. This Saturday’s competition is sponsored by Inn Cairns and the competition is a Stableford. The main prize up for a grabs is two nights’ accommodation, valued at $350.00.

Don’t forget - there is only a couple of weeks to go for you to get your tickets in the raffle. Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5. The raffle is being drawn on October 26. Also available for purchase is a $2 ticket in the 100 Club in which $100 is up for grabs for the winner. Happy golfing everyone. Kelly Barnett Manager Cooktown Golf Links

Hope Vale triumph over Marton in warm up for Rainforest Cup

Reef fin closures now in force

CORAL reef fin fish will be off limits from midnight this Tuesday, October 1 as part of the first of two annual closures that protect these fish during spawning season. Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol acting district manager Geoff Fergusson said the closures were vital to protect fish at an important time in their life cycle. “Closed seasons are vital to allow stocks to replenish to ensure there are healthy fish stores for current and future generations of Queensland fishers,” Mr Fergusson said. “After an extensive scientific review, two five-day closures each year for five years were announced in October 2009 to provide certainty and long-term planning for fishers. “This year, the first closure will run from midnight on October 1 to midnight on October 6 and the second, from midnight on October 30 to midnight on November 4.” Mr Fergusson said the dates for the closures changed each year depending on the new moon phases. “The closures coincide with the new moon when key coral reef fish species aggregate to spawn,” he said. “October and November have been found to be months of high effectiveness for closures to protect coral reef fin fish, particularly the key target species. “Tropical snapper and other coral reef fin fish may be more susceptible to concentrated fishing when spawning and these closures help ensure the sustainability of the fishery. “Fishers need to remember that they should not take and possess coral reef fin fish species during the closure period. “Coral reef fin fish include cods and groupers, emperors, parrotfishes, sweetlips, wrasses, coral trout, fusiliers, surgeonfishes, tropical snappers and seaperches.” A reef fish web guide is available online at www.fisheries.qld.gov.au to help fishers identify fish listed as coral reef fin fish. Mr Fergusson said the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol will be conducting regular patrols during the school holidays to remind fishers of the closures. “Recreational fishers caught doing the wrong thing during the coral reef fin fish closure risk an on-the-spot fine of $440 and a maximum penalty of $110,000.” The closures are in place from the northern tip of Cape York to Bundaberg in the south (the southern boundary is at latitude 24º50’S). The eastern boundary of the closure is the same as the eastern boundary of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Follow Fisheries Queensland on Facebook and Twitter (@FisheriesQld).

It was steady going for the Marton openers as the Hope Vale boys bowled tightly and runs were hard to score. At the first drinks break Marton were 0-85 and cruising along nicely. However, after the break the wickets began to fall. In the first over after drinks, Snelly was caught by Selwyn for 32 off the bowling of Leroy. This brought Johnno to the crease and he and Dom took the score to 110 before Dom was caught and bowled by Selwyn for 52. The Hope Vale boys then continued to take wickets in fairly quick succession. Wilco was dismissed for one, Johnno fell soon after for 11 and Scott for two.

Zane Stallon and Wal Welsh steadied the ship for a while, playing some nice shots and taking the score to 151 before Zane was stumped by Preston after trying to dance down the pitch to the bowling of Timmy. Wal continued on playing some nice shots whilst being well supported by Brett Pickup before he too fell, being caught behind by Preston off the bowling of Darren. At the end of the 40 overs, Marton had scored 193 with Brett Pickup remaining not out on 13 and Billy Harrigan not out on one. After a quick lunch break, the Heroes started their innings, making a quick start with Preston scoring 17 off the first

At this stage Hope Vale were 3 for 57 with Selwyn and Phillip at the crease. This pair then took the game away from the Marton XI with some steady batting taking the score to 149 before Selwyn was caught by Johnno off the bowling of Zane for 44. However, just when Marton thought they were out of the game, the wickets began to tumble. In the space of a few overs, the Marton boys took three wickets with Dom bowling Phillip for 36 then picking up Coley for four and Darren falling, caught and bowled by Snelly for one. This left Hope Vale at 7 for 159, and once again it was game on. Eril and Leroy steadied the ship taking the score to 188 before Eril was caught by Wilco for 22. This bought Clive to the crease and he and Leroy picked off the remaining runs to give Hope Vale a well- earned victory. Once again we would like to thank all those people who volunteered on the day for making it another enjoyable day down at the Gardens. Also, we would like to wish the best of luck to all the Black Mountain Panthers and Hope Vale players who will be competing in the Rainforest Cup this weekend. Go get ‘em guys!
