er than the rest of the world and that those studies should be discounted.

ATTENDEES at Tuesday night’s fluoride forum at the PCYC Cooktown Events Centre were presented with a raft of information, both for and against the inclusion of fluoride in the Cooktown Water Supply.

However, it was the subject of non-dental, healthrelated issues that drew most inquiries from the audience during question time, some of which Dr Foley was unable to answer because, “I’m not a doctor”. And it was those questions which left one attendee stating: “Last night’s fluoride forum has left me with many unanswered questions”.

But after 20-minute presentations by Annette Sheppard (against water fluoridation) and Dr Michael Foley (pro-fluoride) were any opinions changed?

So while few, if any opinions were budged by the evening’s presentations, it seemed the issue of “choice” over the perceived pros and cons, surfaced as a very important consideration for the locals opposing the practice locally.

And what decision will the Cook Shire Council make at its next ordinary meeting, which will be held from next Monday, October 14 to Wednesday, October 17? Bearing in mind that state and local governments have the mandate to decide outcomes they believe are in the “greater” public interest. Representing council at the forum were Deputy Mayor Penny Johnson and Councillors Kaz Price, Alan Wilson, Sue Clark and Russell Bowman, all of whom will deliberate over the information received and take their thoughts to that meeting. Unable to attend were Mayor Peter Scott who was on his way to Brisbane after receiving a late invitation from the Premier to attend the Queensland Plan summit, and Cr Glen Shepherd. About 40 people attended the forum, with the large ma-

jority being in the 45-plus age range, with few young parents in the audience. The meeting started at 6pm with its chairwoman, Cook Shire Economic Development Director Katrina Houghton providing a brief history of how the shire came to introduce fluoride into its water supply, its costs and its dosages. “The Cooktown scheme uses granular Sodium Fluoride, with the current dose rate applied at about 0.7

parts per million,” she said. “Cooktown’s Annan Fluoride Scheme has been audited three times by Queensland Health and on each occasion has passed the audit.” Ms Sheppard, a former nurse with post graduate qualifications in nutrition and primary health care, former councillor and currently a lecturer in Health Science – Complementary Medicine started the proceedings with her presentation, providing slides showing the negative

effects of fluoridated water and posing questions on its long-term dental effects, along with health-related issues outside the dental field. She warned that should long term discoveries be made of major issues be traced back to fluoridated water, the population would have no legal redress against the state, because legislation prevents litigation against the government. Queensland Health representative and member of

the Australian Dental Association, Dr Michael Foley countered Ms Sheppard’s arguments with statistics and the results of world-wide surveys from countries with similar climates and demographics to that of Queensland. He did express the opinion that a great deal of anti-fluoride arguments were based on studies made in China, where the fluoride found to be naturally occurring in its water was much, much high-

“No forced solutions, why can’t people who would like to drink fluoridated water, add it to their own drinking water?”, asked the same attendee. On the issue of “choice”, Cook Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Steve Wilton floated the option of a referendum, which could be available to council to further gauge the greater public’s acceptance or denial of fluoride in Cooktown’s water? However, the Cooktown Local News is left asking that if only the “passionate” people vote, would a referendum in fact be a true indicator of the public’s wishes?

 letters to the editor Locals benefit from Local Government Conference I WOULD like to publicly thank the Cook Shire Council for providing us with the opportunity to raise some funds through catering and providing our new “didge” player and Captain Cook and Co for the Local Government Conference last week. The delegates were very interested in our activities and we received many favourable compliments for the work we

do to promote the community. Apart from our association, there were many other local businesses who also benefited from this event by providing catering and accommodation for the 100 delegates for this three-day conference. Loretta Sullivan President Cooktown Re-enactment Association

Bolting bins down might stop vandalism EARLY every morning I walk my dog down Charlotte Street. Ever since the introduction of the new heritage-compatible garbage bin containers, I have witnessed the mindless vandalism of these containers – doors have been torn off and paintwork scratched and damaged. The worst act is the upending of these containers onto the roadway and the spilling of the contents across the road and footpaths. These containers from day one should have been bolted down to the concrete slabs. This would prevent the worst of the vandalism and eliminate the need for hours of hard work by council workers to move these containers every time

a cyclone threatens Cooktown. The worst results of these acts of vandalism are the threat to council workers who have to clean up the mess, putting themselves at risk of injury from broken glass and other sharp objects in the garbage and the risk of disease or infections from rotting foodstuffs and other materials in the bins. Surely council must have a duty of care for its employees under the Workplace Health & Safety Act? The small cost of bolting down these containers would be greatly outweighed by the benefits gained for all of Cooktown. Don Haskins Cooktown.

could not afford the flow on effect of dental bills when they have to take their cavity-ridden children to the dentist to correct the damage done by the lack of fluoride in the water. Alternatively, this would become a cost burden on an already financially stricken Health Department and we would all share the cost of this additional health service so a few people can exercise their right to say no. The benefits of fluoridation heavily outweigh the risks of no fluoride and I say YES, keep it there and allow common sense to prevail. Loretta Sullivan Cooktown.

‘The days of passing on big rate rises must Apels be over’ – Crisafulli at LGAQ conference

Mayors and councillors from all areas of North Queensland from Mackay in the south, to Torres Strait in the north and Mt Isa in the west gathered in Cooktown last Wednesday for a threeday North Queensland Local Government Association conference. Held at the PCYC Cooktown Events Centre, the conference provided delegates with the opportunity to listen to a range of keynote speakers who talked on various topics reflective of current trends and interest in local government today. Local Government Minister David Crisafulli shared the State’s vision for a strong economy with strong councils. Joined by local member David Kempton, Mr Crisafulli told councils about the need to deliver projects on time, but to also find economic development opportunities and ways to cut costs to pass on savings to ratepayers. “The banana plantation at Hope Vale, which I toured is a classic example of a council looking for opportunities to grow its revenue source,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“By coming together, councils can share ways of improving their service to the community.” Mr Crisafulli also challenged councils to work together to deliver services to ensure ratepayers were receiving value for money. “The days of passing on big rate rises must be over,” Mr Crisafulli said. “We have a vision for Queensland which has a strong economy, but is still a place where people can complement having a job with affordable living costs.” Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott said the event had been a great showcase for Cooktown, which would give a great economic boost to the town. “It was extremely well-organised, thanks to the efforts of our Deputy Mayor Penny Johnson, council staff and the LGAQ,” Mr Scott said. “Not only were the delegates given a ‘taste’ of what Cooktown has to offer, but we were also able to showcase the multicultural involvement of our locals in the entertainment we provided.” Cr Scott said he was heartened

Use ANZAC Park entrance to arty bras and jocks parade IF you’re headed to Saturday’s “Mini Fun Festival” being run by the Cooktown Creative Arts Association, take the ANZAC Park entrance to the downstairs section of what locals refer to as ‘The Old Railway Building’, which houses the Association.

‘rather different’ have outdone past year’s events. With $100 on offer for each section winner, anyone still wanting to enter has until tomorrow, Friday, October 11 to submit their intentions. The cost for each entry is $5, but $2 of this is being donated to breast cancer and prostate cancer research. Entry forms are available from the Craft Shop in Charlotte Street, opposite the Chemist’s.

Organisers are concerned that those attending will go to the upstairs section of the building, which is accessible from Charlotte Street. Starting at 5pm and finishing at about 9pm, those with a liking for the “creative”, the “different” and even perhaps the “bizarre” will be delighted with this year’s array of ‘Arty Bras’, ‘Jazzy Jocks’, ‘Crazy Hats’ and ‘Dunny Art’.

PowerHouse under new management NEW Nature’s PowerHouse manager John Tritton knows full well he is somewhat “up against it”, having only recently taken over the enterprise at what is virtually the end of the 2013 tourist season. But John is hoping locals will take advantage of the ambient settings of the Cooktown Botanical Gardens to hold conferences, meetings and Christmas functions to see him through the early stages of his management. “The garden setting is just lovely and offers a perfect backdrop to our verandah area on which we can host functions of all sorts,” John said. “We’ll be offering the venue for night time bookings, which we hope the locals will take advantage of and support.” John, who is probably better known as the for-

Permaculture students get a ‘taste’ of the real thing from locals THIRTY permaculture students got a veritable “taste” of the ‘fruits’ of sustainable farming practices last Friday, when they were treated to a lunch consisting almost wholly from produce farmed at Peter Skipworth’s farm Zazen. From as diverse backgrounds as France, Italy, the Philippines and Australia, the students had earlier visited Dr Wendy Seabrook’s, Hilltop Farm where they had been given an insight into Dr Seabrook’s permaculture practices. Among the students were Bana Yarralji elders Peter and Marilyn Wallace who want to introduce permalture to their people for a more natural diet, which will hopefully see a reduction in diseases like diabetes.

He said the livestock on the farm also had other purposes. “The theory of permaculture is that everything on the farm has three functions,” he said. “And in the case of the livestock, they not only provide food, but natural fertiliser and perform weeding functions. “One of the biggest

problems when we first started here was we didn’t have enough manure. “All our fertilising is natural – either with manure or mulch and you won’t find any chemicals here.”

Learn about ‘fracking’ at info night A HOT topic on the environmental circuit at the moment is the technique of “fracking” - or hydraulic fracturing as it is properly known. The aim is to open up splits in the rock below

AFTER weeks of advertising on Facebook and sharing posters around town, Cooktown Film Festival organiser Sarah Henderson is now desperately hoping video entries will be received to make this year’s event a competitive one.

skills, filming techniques and learn how to edit on professional software.

“Entries close tomorrow, October 11, and we still haven’t received any videos,” said Sarah.

The Cooktown Film Festival will be held on Sunday, October 27 in Endeavour Park. Food and drinks will be available from 5pm with community groups cooking for the crowds to raise funds for their non-profit groups. The event will officially kick off at 6pm with a combination of Australian touring short films presented by the QLD Touring Film Festival, short films created by the Endeavour Christian College and the four videos produced that weekend by the In The Bin educational workshops.

“It’s frustrating to think of all the hard work that our volunteers have helped with organising prizes, contacting sponsors and advertising, that the excitement we feel for this unique event hasn’t been reciprocated.”

She said that perhaps in typical “Cooktown time”, entries will come in on the last day, however an extension of time has now been granted to October 18 to allow for last minute entries. “This is the absolute cut off date, so if you have any short videos under five minutes in length, please contact me immediately,” said. “There’s some awesome prizes in five categories, and at this stage, anyone could win a prize simply by entering.” C/Town Asylum Productions were successful in obtaining funds through RADF earlier in the year to have In The Bin return to Cooktown to hold a three-day workshop in which participants will learn story board and scriptwriting

However, In The Bin were lucky also to receive funding to tour with the QLD Touring Film Festival and bring another four workshops to Cooktown.

Combined with in-kind support with Cook Shire Council, C/Town Asylum hopes to see big crowds in the park from 5pm. Being a Sunday night with school and work the next day, it won’t be a late night, but it will be an awesome event, so bring your chairs and blankets down and help with your vote in the ‘People’s Choice Awards”. Pubs and roads the benchmarks of success

MOTEL

Charlotte Street, Cooktown in 1875. Photo submitted.

ON February 14, 1874, the first Police Magistrate, Mr Thomas Hamilton reported to the Colonial Secretary that in the last week, 400 people had arrived on various ships from southern ports such as Sydney, Brisbane, Bowen and Townsville.

By the start of March 1874, Hamilton reported that the population of Cooktown had reached 2500. Hotels have often been used as a measure of commerce, as these were the accommodation houses as well as “watering holes”. Cooktown boasted four licensed hotels by Nov/Dec 1873, but by the end of 1874 there were 47. Construction of a road was always seen as the most important project in the first months of Cooktown’s development. The Engineer for Roads, Mr MacMillan surveyed the first road and blazed trees

along its route for others to follow, and follow it they did, in their thousands - either on foot or on horseback. No carts or drays could use this track initially, and packhorse teams were employed in carrying supplies to the goldfield. However, these carriers were unable to meet the needs of the expanding population in that area, as Hamilton further reported in March 1874, it would take upwards of 2000 horses, constantly on the road, to meet these needs. To solve the problem, every able bodied person who was available, was

pressed into building the road so that drays could be employed to supply the field. “Would-beMiners”, who had found no payable gold, and who had run out of money, were given the option of earning a passage south by working on this vital project. Others who were unfit to work, were provided a free passage back down south. Thus the road was extended toward Palmerville. The first person to take a horse-drawn dray through from Cooktown to Palmerville was Michael Flood. He successfully completed the trip

on June 8, 1874. Unwilling to wait for the road to be completed, Flood made his own road from the crossing of the Normanby River to Palmerville. He lost four of his twelve horses on the epic journey and subsequently attempted to gain a monitory reward for being the first to get a dray load of supplies through to the Palmer. In this he was unsuccessful. Last heard of, Michael Flood was committed for trial charged with manslaughter on October 6, 1874. He had shot and killed his dray driver, a Michael Ryan.

Yarrabah set to steal our crown View from the Hill WE had better look out folks, because someone is trying to steal Cooktown’s crown as Queen of the North Country. We have been complacent for far too long, relying on the fact that there is nowhere else

in Far North Queensland that anyone would want to visit.

It’s not so much that we have the best hotels and restaurants outside of Cairns and Port Douglas, we have the only alternative hotels and restaurants. Nice situation to be in because if anyone wants to see the North, they are going to end up in Cooktown at some point. All that is about to change, because Yarrabah has decided it wants

to take over, and it wants to do things properly. These guys are serious. They have big ideas and are talking serious money. They want to hit the ground running with a $250 million eco-village and cruise ship terminal. Their mayor is leading a delegation to Melbourne to offer various superannuation fund managers the chance to invest. He will be telling them that other far north resorts like Cooktown and Cairns, don’t have

the facilities to welcome cruise ships, but Yarrabah will. The mayor already has government backing. Brisbane has been making savings everywhere and now has pots of cash to spend on really worthwhile projects, like creating a paradise resort at Yarrabah. The jetty and cruise ship terminal are Phase 1; Phase 2 will be the creation of a tropical Hollywood. Film production companies

Remember to shine... AS kids we used to sing, “See this little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine..” The little light, we were told, was our lives as Christians. We had a job, “ shining our lights”, making an impact, being shining lights reflecting the light (and other qualities) of Jesus. The Bible actually reminds us to let our lights so shine that others may see and recognise the source of that light, Jesus. (Matt 5:16) Young Tom was sitting in church one Sunday. He looked up at the beautiful, stained

glass windows and saw faces in the glass. “Mum, who are those people in the window?” he asked. “Those are the saints,” she answered. The little boy thought for awhile and then said, “Oh, I know who the saints are. They’re the ones that let the light in.” Yes, Christians are saints - people called by God for a special purpose, to “let the Light of Jesus in” and to be lights in a dark world where many neglect the teachings of Jesus “the Light of Life”, indeed the one who said, ‘I am the light of the world. Who-

ever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ (John 8:12) It is from our relationship with Jesus Christ that we can be lights. A sunbeam is unable to shine if it is cut off from the sun. Neither is a person able to give light in this dark world unless he is a follower, friend, (and therefore a reflector of the light) of Jesus Christ. Cut the current and the electric light dies. So too, conditional to us being light is our keeping unbroken our communication/relationship with Jesus. Someone else once aptly

will be begging for the chance to film in Yarrabah, with its wonderful beaches and stunning tropical scenery. They have already made one film there - The Island of Dr Moreau with Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer. Although, now I come to think of it, that was a horror movie, wasn’t it? An irreverent, satirical (and totally fictional) comment upon the issues of life, by our faceless correspondent.

Quiz answers

Seven of the ships had arrived within the previous 24 hours and the population of the port stood at nearly 2000. While supplies were plentiful in Cooktown, concern was being felt for the people on the goldfield, as the last bullock had been killed over a week previously, and there was no way of resupplying these 2000-odd people. In addition, Hamilton was concerned about the 500 to 1000 people stuck on the road between the goldfield and Cooktown, who were unable to reach either center because of the flooded creeks and rivers, due to the wet season.

CROSSWORD No. 169

SUDOKU No. 169

Your  Lucky 



Stars  

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd)

A long discussion with a friend may create more questions than answers. A simplistic solution won’t work. You will need to put a lot of effort into solving this. Romance. Concerns from friends about your current relationship status may be over-blown. Don’t give it too much thought.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)

You need a clear, straightforward answer at the moment. A vague promise will not be enough! Jot down the details. Romance. Some changes are coming up and you will have to keep a clear head to decide on the best course of action. Include your mate’s opinion in this decision too.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st)

A letter addressed to someone else may be too tempting to ignore. You may wish that you had left it alone, however! Romance. A fleeting encounter with a person born overseas will prove interesting. Be careful not to get too involved, though. Do you have energy for a long-distance relationship?

FOR KIDS

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th)

A colleague you haven’t worked oneon-one with before seems to know you surprisingly well. Perhaps you are too closed off at work? Romance. A friend’s advice will help to get you back on track after a recent disappointment. Don’t be afraid to go out and make new acquaintances.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

A surge of energy will help you to push through an important change. Don’t stop trying until you get everything that you need. You deserve the best! Romance. Your partner will be very impressed by your positive attitude. They may begin to be more optimistic than usual and you are to thank.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th)

You may be surprised at something that happens to you this week. Perhaps it has been destined all along. Romance. Your love-life may need some “sprucing up”. Your friend will have a suggestion which helps. Be open to their ideas as you need to do something out of your realm.

FINDWORD No. 169 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th)

A full-scale clear-out will be worth the effort. Something which you find by chance could lead to a pleasant surprise. Romance. You get annoyed when your partner creates a mess and expects you to clean up after them. This week, you may have to be a little more stern and assertive.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)

For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au

MUDDY RIVER

Contact with your father may be helpful. However, he won’t realise how you have changed recently. Update him on all aspects of your life. Romance. You should be careful with money this week. You will soon have a much better idea of your financial situation. What is your mate’s situation?

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

A long conversation will contain just one important fact. Don’t miss the “rose” hidden amongst mountains of “weeds”! In all, you need to remain optimistic. Romance. You will be surprised how willing your partner is to discuss their troubles with you. They will see you as a “sympathetic ear”.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd)

This will be an extremely good time for meeting new friends, provided you can avoid any misunderstandings. Be clear with who you are. Romance. You may be a little surprised with how much energy you have this week. Your positivity will be noticed immediately by your mate.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

We become what we think about.

–Earl Nightingale

SOLUTIONS No. 169

Don’t overreact. You will be surprised how forceful you can be if you are annoyed. Cool off before making any rash moves. Romance. Try not to bring up any topics which have caused problems in the past. You don’t need to avoid them forever, but this isn’t the week to dig up old dirt.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)

This will be a good time to take a gamble. You will have to trust to your gut instincts, however. It is important that you know when to call it a day. Romance. Your partner will be grateful for your support through a difficult period. This may be fairly stressful for you at times, however.

TODAY I made a resolution, deciding that I shall not let a week pass without convening a meeting of “Us Three”, the river, the sea and me. I shall choose a vantage point, a speck on the far northern map, where this confluence of two waters can be admired

and offer the Lord thanks for such a treasure. No baggage shall I bring to this meeting; no niggling worries regarding financial shortfalls, no grumbles about ill health or any other such woes; and attending shall be only “Us Three”- and Thee. Have you turned your “Endeavour Dreaming” into verse or prose suitable for our column? Email it to: either editor@cooktownlocalnews.com.au or thekellers@bigpond.com or send it to : P O Box 645, Cooktown, 4895. Dianne Keller Cooktown Writers’ Group.

Reversing my stance, I gazed back at the tiny town; Red, yellow, pink blooms were jewellery on an emerald gown. Elegant palms, feathery fronds, moved in stately sway. Contentedly I sighed, now ready to face my day.

I tried not to think of crocs cannily lurking there And fixed my smile on blue skies, lapping water, clean air. It’s Spring so life-filled leaves and blushing blossoms were seen. Shoes abandoned, I wriggled ten toes in grassy green.

This morning I rebelled and I ignored all my chores And, sun-kissed, took a short stroll along Endeavour shores. A seagull, plus mates, approached in arrogant display And a fisherman, friendly in dinghy, waved, “G’day.”

First the ‘Hummus’: Ingredients and method: One can of cooked chickpeas or even better, make your own raw “spouted” chickpeas. (It is really easy to sprout, just wash out an empty glass jar and place about a third full of the chickpeas inside. The main points to sprouting are the initial overnight soaking, then rinsing thoroughly 2-3 times a day with water for two days. You can cover the jar with some cheesecloth and a rubber band if you don’t have a sprouting lid. Sprouting unleashes their full potential. Once sprouted, the protein content will increase by as much as 20 per cent, nucleic acids by 30 per cent and many vitamins by as much as 500 per cent.) 2-3 garlic cloves, process chickpeas and garlic together. Juice of 2-3 lemons, add lemon juice (to taste) and process again. 2 tbsp. light tahini paste (sesame seed oil) add tahini – process. 150ml (approx.) extra virgin olive oil, with

Hummus and Humour processor going, add olive oil gradually to get a thick creamy paste. Add pinch of salt, cumin, (optional). Check seasoning. Make sure the hummus is quite smooth and lemony. Put hummus in a dish and spread evenly. With the handle of a wooden spoon make a spiral swirl and dribble olive oil into the hollow. Parsley or mint (finely chopped) sprinkled over hummus with a dash of cayenne pepper.

nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. The guitarist felt bad and apologised to the men for being late. He

went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. He didn’t know what else to do, so he started to play his guitar.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. The guitarist played his heart and soul out for this poor man with no family and friends. He played like he’d never played before.

And as he played Amazing Grace, the workers began to weep. They wept, the guitarist wept, they all wept together. When he had finished playing, he packed up the guitar and walked

toward his car, his head hung low and his heart was full. As the guitarist opened the car door, he heard one of the workers say, “I never seen nothin’ like that before and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years!” The guitarist realised he was still lost…

A guitarist was recently asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. The deceased man had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper’s cemetery in the backcountry. As he was not familiar with the backwoods, the guitarist got lost. He finally arrived an hour late, saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was

Bloomfield River. At the river, it’s been mainly about setting up offices at this stage, but we’re assured that real work will soon proceed. The bridge is due for completion by February 1 next year, weather permitting. The good news is, that the State Government has found some money to upgrade the design to make it more resilient. Not that we’d expect otherwise. The action at Woobadda is more obvious. Seed collection for later plant re-establishment took place a few weeks ago. A fenced area for offices and accommodation is in place, trees have been felled and a start to clearing the bridge alignment has been made. The alignment will be alongside, and on the high side of the existing crossing. In the long term, Woobadda will be safer, give better access to business and the local communities and ensure better water quality downstream. Forty-five years ago, the original Bloomfield Track was blazed and built by the Baileys Creek Cape Tribulation Development League. Original road builder John Norris and two original pioneers, Pat and brother Colin Mason joined friends last week to commemorate the work of the pioneers, via a memorial plaque. For most of its route, the Track took the same path as today’s iconic Track. However, it started on the Cape Tribulation Beach, climbed up a steep stretch to the existing road, then took a different path over Cowie Range, avoiding the dangerous Woobadda Creek

by going down a northerly ridgeline to Thompsons Creek. Most of our travellers have interesting backgrounds, but how about the Morel family from Perth? Of French background, they’re true internationals. Dad works in the resources area, so they’ve lived in USA, France, Dubai, Turkey, UK and now Australia. The kids go to international schools, so education is pretty well seamless and languages are diverse. International contact also builds bridges between people. As true travellers, they spent as much time in the Daintree area as possible absorbing nature, and stayed away from the tourist fleshpots. But here’s the catch. At their Perth International School, none of their friends had actually stayed in the Daintree before. We’ll all have to sharpen our marketing act a little - international and independent schools are good business. The excitement continues with wildlife. Torresian pigeons, metallic starlings and buff-breasted paradise kingfishers have all returned to the area. Look around for the beautiful white (with black tail and wing markings) pigeons as they fly from the Hope and Low Isles in the morning to feed in the forest, then return in the afternoon to their breeding spots in the mangrove islands. At least they don’t need bridges. Happy travelling, Mike and Trish D’Arcy D’Arcy of Daintree 4WD Tours Phone: +61 7 4098 9180 www.darcy of daintree.com.au

The misplaced drinks mystery I HAVE a very unusual Hash to report on this week. It was hosted by Oyster, and started off completely normally.

The trail took to the bush behind Oyster’s house and headed east to reach the ghost of Keable Street. A little searching here and there, and eventually the pack reached the new “Highway to

 from page 20 Also some of the original workers, Phil Witheridge (who is now the course superintendent) who made the steel stumps for the club house, Paul Bielek lent machin-

ery and labour, Barney Clark earthmoving, Tim Guzsely and Bill Anderson who made and donated the President’s Board and was also a president and who also worked on the course and maintained all the machinery

A golfer accidentally overturned his cart on the course. Elizabeth, a beautiful golfer who lived in a villa on the golf course, heard the noise and yelled over to him, “Hey! Are you okay? What’s your name?” “Willis,” he replied. “Willis forget your troubles. Come to my villa, rest up and I’ll help you get the cart up later,” Elizabeth said. “That’s mighty nice of you,” Willis answered, “But I don’t think my wife would like it.”

Oyster had laid a trail through the wastelands of town and carefully arranged for it to climb the new mountain highway the Shire has carved out of the foot hills of Mount Cook. This is an exciting new development, a new road winding this way and that carved into the living flank of the mountain. As a reward for the Hashers’ efforts, a drink stop was planned at the terminus of the new road. Fair enough, you might think, no worries. Except there is always someone who manages to get hold of the wrong end of the stick. This time it was Cracklin, aided and abetted by Matchbox. They volunteered to pre-position the 4WD with the drink stop. Off they went, left the car at the drink stop and returned in time to start the run. They gave the keys to the car to Moses as he was likely to be among the first of the pack to get there, and could be trusted to mix the punch.

Golf Club’s early history for many years. To all the people who have worked on the course over the years and I have not mentioned be proud of the result as testified by all the excellent comments made by many visitors, I say thank you.

“Aww, come on,” Elizabeth insisted. She was very pretty and persuasive. “Well okay,” Willis finally agreed and added, “But my wife won’t like it.” After a hearty drink and putting lessons, Willis thanked his hostess, “I feel a lot better now, but I know my wife is going to be real upset.” “Don’t be foolish,” Elizabeth said with a smile, “She won’t know anything, by the way, where is she?” “Under the cart. . . . “

Get well soon ‘Dizzy’ Cookown Hashers struggle with the new Mt Cook trail. Photo submitted. Heaven”. We sweated and climbed, not deterred by dust or boulders or dogs until we reached the turning circle cut into the mountainside where the drink stop should have been waiting. It wasn’t there. We had gone all that way in the hope of refreshment, and Cracklin’s car was not waiting for us. A pretty disgruntled bunch of Hashers walked back home to find that - guess what - Cracklin and Matchbox were nowhere to be seen.

Where had they gone? Who knows? We only knew that they had announced they would be short-cutting to the car. Of course, once they had reached it, they could not unlock it because Moses had taken the keys to the right place, and wherever they were was wrong. They caught a taxi home... GM Thermo had a surplus of sins to deal with, but guess who had the most attention. Cracklin and Matchbox were feeling very insignificant by the time Thermo had finished

with them. Never mind, everything was made happy again by Oyster’s excellent spicy casserole, followed by two desserts. Next week’s run will be at Moses and YoYo’s, and Cracklin will not be trusted to position the drink without help from older and wiser Hashers. Just turn up at 5.30pm next Monday, October 14, to join the fun. Contact Moses on either 4069 5854 or 0409 686 032 for details. On-on! Lye Bak

CAPE YORK SSAA members are wishing Range Officer Darryl, “Dizzy” Wain a speedy and complete recovery from an injury sustained in a recent work mishap, which has seen him in hospital.

“Dizzy’s” misfortune forced the cancellation of last Sunday’s advertised pistol shoot. Earlier on Saturday, Pete Roberts took the opportunity to try out his new Tikka .223 rifle while Toby tried out a

Crocs make Rainforest Cup grand final By ALF WILSON THE Cooktown Crocs performed strongly in last weekend’s Rainforest Cup Indigenous Cricket Carnival in Tully, making the grand final, but going down to the home team, Ingan XI.

News on October 7 that his boys put up a great effort. “It was a six-hour drive down last Friday and we brought 14 to the carnival,” Selwyn said. “Six were from Hope Vale and the others from Cooktown. “The boys did really well.

Jumbun and last year’s winners Mandubarra took on Townsville Falcons. It was the 10th annual Rainforest Cup, which has been described as one of Australia’s toughest Indigenous cricket carnivals.

Ingan with a score of 8/197 triumphed over the Crocs’ 10/122 to take the trophy on Sunday.

“Adrian Kulka, Tim Rosendale, Errol Kulka and Preston Deemal shone.”

NITV covered the carnival which will give it national exposure.

To make the decider, the Crocs had to win their first five games.

Selwyn himself got amongst the wickets.

Ten sides battled it out for honours at the prestigious Rainforest Cup, which was played under the exciting Twenty20 format.

The Crocs beat Innisfail Sameway twice, including once in a qualifying final, on their way to the grand final.

The players returned home on Monday and stopped off at Cairns for a break after two hard days of competitive cricket.

Crocs spokesman Selwyn McIvor told the Cooktown Local

In the other qualifying semis Ingan played Mareeba, Yarrabah met

Organising committee’s Stan Lenoy described the carnival as a huge success.

Fin fish are open for business again THE weather has been kind for the school holidays and the fish have been keeping all ages entertained, with the anticipation of the big one always drawing them back to try again and again. The quality of the fish over the past few couple of weeks has been impressive as the Fishing Guide says, “it’s a great time of year, it not really work!”. A bait meant for either a queenfish or a Spanish mackerel was taken by this giant herring, but it still put up a good fight.

Spanish mackerel, coral trout, red emperor and large mouth nannygai will be back on the target list for the next few weeks until the next closure.

your fix as midday on November 1 will start the closed season for Barramundi on the east coast. As you see from the photos, the estuary or offshore is a great place to play at this time of year. The weather forecast has the wind staying around the 15 knot marl, so it will be OK for larger boats. But there is always a change if they have it wrong and we get a “glass out”, so be ready! Otherwise, a few barra and “Jacks” in the estuary will still be ok.

Cooktown Golf Club’s early history is told By NORM NEILL I didn’t arrive in Cooktown until 1984, but the Cooktown Golf Club had already been formed in 1982. At that time, Jim Waters was the president, but the other members are not known to me. The five fairways were by then cleared by Kevin Miller using Abbey Seagren’s D9 Dozer. During the following years the presidents changed. In 1983, there was Des Hill and in 1984 it was Jim Waters. The members had lost interest and the course became overgrown. When I arrived in 1984, I happened to be in the Top Pub and was introduced to John Sorrell, who was then president. A lasting friendship started and as well, all the hard work. The fairways were all overgrown with regrowth trees, bushes, wild mint and blue top snake weed.

With the help of non-golfers Kevin Ward, Fred Lypsch and Vic Cummins, we sprayed all the fairways using a trailer loaded with 44 gallon drums of weed killer and a small petrol pressure pump fitted with garden hoses. As the course improved some locals became more interested and helped. Cook Shire Council donated $500 per year to the club. We then used the money to hire their tractor and slasher to clear the fairways. We paid the driver with a carton paid for out of our own pockets, each time he slashed for us. The greens were built using a borrowed tractor (John Peard’s) and a scraper blade I had. Grass for the greens we acquired from the side of the roads around town, and also the car park behind the council offices - all dug out by John and Norm and carted to the course in John’s ute and my trailer. The government gave us two men and two

women on a CEP Scheme for six months which was a help. During 1984-1985, Cooktown had a new hospital built, part of the building contract the builders, Leighton Construction had was to remove the old hospital and the matron’s house from the site by the end of 1985. It so happened that John Sorrell and I were in the Top Pup again and happened to be talking to the managers of Leighton Constructions about the new hospital and what was to happen to the matron’s house. A hint was dropped about a golf club that was broke and needed a club house very badly. After a few rounds of the good cheer, a hard deal was struck. We could have the house but had to remove it before the end of December. The all-up price being a not inconsiderable sum of one carton of beer - full strength of course! We considered the afternoon’s work well done.

Tide times – Cooktown

The fun starts again: how to lift a house and transport it to the golf course? We borrowed every jack in town and a lot of 44 gallon drums, also a small low loader from the council and a lot of old bridge deckers to make a large platform to sit the house on. The wet had started and we were nearly out of time so we moved the house one block away. The road to the club was too narrow for the house, so it had to be bulldozed in places. In the meantime, it was Christmas and a cyclone was off the coast of Cooktown, everyone was doing the proverbial! It if hit the town, away would our club house go, certainly not the desired spot on the course, but our luck held. Photos indicate some hitches we had with the big move. I must say it was a challenge to our meagre resources, but it ended up successful. Unfortunately in 1988, John
