New Lizard Island repeater station already saving lives WITHIN two hours of being switched to “ON”, Lizard Island’s new marine VHF radio repeater station’s Channel 82 sprung to life. A local boat that lost power while fishing in the deep water outside the reef, was drifting towards the reef edge, but they managed to call for help and gained assistance to avoid eminent disaster. Fabled resort location Lizard Island, the Ribbon Reefs, the Cod Hole and some areas of the Coral Sea are now no longer subject to a marine radio “blackout”, thanks to the installation of the station. It has also come just in time for this week’s, sevenday long, 27th Lizard Island Black Marlin classic, which started last Saturday. The event attracts anglers from around the globe to catch and release Giant Black Marlin. An initiative of some dedicated game fisherman, the project was completed courtesy of Peter Teakle who donated substantial funds to cover the costs of the installation, and the Cooktown Volunteer Coast Guard, whose radio licence allows the station to operate. Cooks’ Look, the 358m hill towering over the island now hides the almost-invisible VHF, solar-powered repeater station, which has a range radius of around 200 kilometres. Achieving the various gov-

“Incidents, accidents and prospective shipping disasters necessitated substantial improvement to marine radio communication across the whole area.”

However, proponent game boat skipper Daniel McCarthy, also President of the Cairns Professional Game Fishing Association, was able to establish a successful working relationship with Queensland National Parks to enlist their help to plough through the mountain of paperwork for the station’s approval.

He said before the radio-repeater was installed, the black spot meant virtually no radio reception over a vast area, leaving dozens of vessels ‘in the dark’ on any given day. “As search and rescue operations will undoubtedly be required in these waters, as they always have been, this radio link will greatly enhance marine safety,” he said.

McCarthy said he was grateful to the department for its assistance and congratulates them for having the foresight to see the huge benefits to the maritime community and to further enhance environmental protection in the magnificent region of the Great Barrier Reef. “There were reams of red and green tape that had to be unravelled,” said Dan. “The Environmental Protection Authority naturally wanted to preserve the island’s wilderness assets.” He said National Parks were understandably worried the pristine walking trail to the top of Cooks Look might be compromised, but are satisfied the modernity of the transmitter has been discreetly placed out of the sight of hikers. “Installed by helicopter, the station is the size of a suitcase and the photo-voltaic solar panel are virtually invisible,

islands, both of which have very narrow shipping routes through them. “Consequently dangerous navigation conditions are created when combined with bad weather, rough seas, the occasional cyclone, and treacherous tidal and current conditions are among the hazards encountered by sea-goers in the area.

“We have seen a few serious mishaps in the Coral Sea in recent times, should there more, or an oil tanker spillage situation, emergency response times and communications between response vessels will be much faster thereby reducing the threat to our environment and helping preserve lives at sea.” Mr McCarthy said in addition to Lizard Island Resort and Bob Lowe President of the Lizard Island Game Fishing Club, other sponsors who tipped-in generous support included Century Batteries and Cairns Battery World, Sky Safari helicopters, David Cantarella the electrician, the Cooktown Volunteer Coast Guard and the Cairns Professional Game Fishing Association.

 letters to the editor My view, lock the ‘fracking’ gate IN response to the news article by Mr Eric George, “Learn about ‘fracking’ at info night”, Cooktown Local News, (October 10) I would suggest that many people across the world have already made up their own minds as to what to expect from this fracking practice. It’s worth considering where the rural folks of Pennsylvania are today as a result of widespread fracking of some of the largest coal seam deposits in the United States. In this instance, there are 4000 wells with an expected 2500 new ones every year. The New York Times article, “The Fracturing of Pennsylvania”, would appear to give a rather frightening assessment of what has occurred in this region’s gas extraction regime. Severely polluted ground water and rivers, sickness in the community and more people with the ability to ignite methane gas from water taps than one may currently think possible. Employment has risen though. It’s not just Pennsylvania though, with Youngstown, Ohio running a close second. The Emmy Award winning documentary, Split Estate would seem an accurate account of the dirty side of the fracturing process. France has just banned the practice of fracking and cancelled all existing exploratory permits, so one could surmise they are a tad concerned about the process as well. If Mr George is going to state, “who knows what fracking does”, I’d suggest there is enough evidence in the electronic media to enlighten him. Surely the New York Times or the people who hand out Emmy awards for documentaries wouldn’t fall into the “bimbo” category as, Mr George puts it. The electronic media is drenched in horror stories of fracking environmental impacts. Surely they all can’t be faking it?

Meanwhile, back in Australia, the anti mining campaign “Lock the Gate” has witnessed protests from regular rural folks all over Australia, who are having their precious groundwater, local catchments and productive farm land under apparent threat from gas wells and associated fracking. A large proportion of some recent examples of prime land under threat would include Northern NSW and the Geelong Otway region in Victoria, some of the most fertile and productive food growing/grazing volcanic soil in the country. I’m not an expert in fracking geology, but it would seem a reasonable argument if you were going to pump “liquids” underground as Mr George describes it, and these liquids are substances like benzene, ethylbenzine, toluene, xylene, hydrochloric acid and formaldehyde just to name a few, one might reasonably be concerned about the long term ground water status. In fact, leaking well-bores have been a persistent and chronic problem for decades in the industry. Gas industry statistics from the USA state 5-7 per cent of new gas wells leak, and over time with aged units this leakage can be between 30-50 per cent. Even a 2003 article in Oil Field Review, a publication of Schlumberger, reported that, “Since the earliest gas wells, uncontrolled migration of hydrocarbons to the surface has challenged the oil and gas industry.” I personally believe many Australians have been, and are being, “mislead” as Mr George describes it in relation to the long term affects of fracking on our precious ground water, catchment resources and prime productive food growing land. People often say we are always ten years behind the U.S. Just my view... lock the fracking gate. David Cass. Cooktown.

Negative body language at fluoride forum “SCARE-mongering eccentric fringe groups” (as evidenced in a YouTube clip from an appearance on the Sunday Program), is what Dr Michael Foley called those of us who object to fluoridation of the town water supply. And that was before he got here to address the Council Fluoride discussion on Tuesday, October 8. There I heard him tell the meeting that the antifluoride letters and articles in our local paper are orchestrated by an international anti-fluoride group who infiltrate susceptible, small-population towns. As a “conspiracy theory” that takes the cake! A large percentage of

At that meeting, I saw the head of Queensland Dentistry display the most unprofessional body language - exhibiting boredom, sniggering, eye-rolls and disrespectful childish behaviour throughout the presentation by Ms Shepherd. Others at the meeting have told me they also witnessed that behaviour. And we are expected to trust their professional integrity and believe what they say? Trisha Allen Marton.

A farewell thank you from Guurrbi Tours MANY of you may know that we have been negotiating the sale of Guurrbi Tours for some time to enable Judy to return to the UK at the end of the year to be closer to her 88-year-old Mum. Sadly, last week, we learnt that Judy’s Mum has cancer, so we will now be operating our last tours this Saturday, October 19, so Judy can leave at the end of this month. We would both like to take this opportunity to thank Cooktowners for the tremendous support you have given us over the ten years we have been operating. By the time we

finish next week, an amazing 20,500 people will have walked with Willie on his country and gained a greater understanding of Aboriginal culture and spirituality. This would not have happened without you. And whilst we will always remember with pride what we achieved with Guurrbi Tours, what we will most treasure are the wonderful friends we made along the way. With our very best wishes and sincere thanks to you all, Judy and Willie Guurrbi Tours Cooktown.

Thanks to hardy trail riders THE Cooktown Horse Sports would like to thank all those who supported our trial ride at Alkoomie Station. Thanks also to those brave Cape York women and mothers, who, in spite

Council votes to continue adding fluoride to water

Police warn online scams on increase COOKTOWN police are warning that with it being tax time, there is usually an increase in the number of email and online scams. They cautioned against contacts originating from Nigeria and West Africa for fake lotteries and inheritances, and well as being very careful about sending money, especially if you don’t know any persons in Africa. In local enforcement action, a 56-year-old Hope Vale woman was arrested and charged last Tuesday for the

offence of creating a public nuisance. And a 45-year-old old male tourist had his holiday ruined, when he was intercepted and charged with having driven a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.132 per cent early on Saturday morning. More recently, a 30-year-old local female was arrested and charged on Monday morning for the offence of wilful damage of property at the Westpac bank branch.

the outcome, but was not surprised by it. “Having read the report that was submitted to Councillors about last week’s Forum, I expected the vote to go that way,” Ms Holland said. However, she said she was happy that the efforts of the local band of volunteers who struck a petition against the addition of fluoride to Cooktown’s water supply had expanded the knowledge of the subject of the broader community. “We’ve all been unpaid volunteers, going to the markets every week with the petition and answering questions about the negative aspects of fluoridation,” she said. “Do you know that

there were people who didn’t even know that fluoride is added to our water here?” Ms Holland said she was looking forward to a referendum on the subject being held before the next council elections. “Hopefully, people will continue to broaden their knowledge on the subject,” she said. “I’m sure there could be a different result by then.” But will Tuesday’s vote discourage the group in its campaign to have a choice about what goes into the water being consumed here? “We’re not going away,” she warned.

Tables turned on columnist Story and photo by COREY BOUSEN

The tables are turned for this airing of ‘My Home, My Future’, with the column’s creator, Eric George, interviewed by Cooktown Local News publisher Corey Bousen (who solemnly swears that Eric did not write this article about himself). Eric George is a man of many talents. He is a well travelledgeologist, a published author of 15 fiction and non-fiction books, a Morris dancer, and is someone who has a keen interest in the future growth and success of Cooktown. Like many of the people Eric has written about previously in his column, Cooktown would be much poorer without having him as a resident. Eric is prolific when it comes to offers to friends and acquaintances to “drop around my place for a coffee”, and as fate has it, Eric has a lovely new coffee machine. It’s orange and makes great coffee thanks to the proficient twisting of nobs by its proprietor, so I took Eric up on his offer and dropped around to his place for a coffee and a chat to learn a bit more about his life. Eric is the son of an English weatherman, John, who met his GreekEgyptian wife Nina Risou in Alexandria after John finished his North African service for the RAF during World War II. “My parents met after the war, before the Egyptian revolution [of 1952] which saw all the Greeks kicked out,” Eric recalls. “My mother spoke Greek at home, French at school and Arabic in the shops. She had to learn English when she met my father.” The newly created George family went to England in 1947, where John took up a post with UK Meteorological Of-

fice, where he stayed for the rest of his working life. Eric was born in 1948 in the village of Odiham, New Hampshire, with another son born shortly thereafter to complete the family unit. But John George’s job as a weatherman for the UK Met Office saw the family move to Libya in 1951, where a young Eric can “remember news reels of King George VI’s funeral and Britain setting an air-speed record from our airbase”. After the stint in Libya, the George’s again returned to the UK, this time to a little village in North Devon, where Eric says he had a normal education “more-or-less”. His senior secondary school education was as a boarder at the United World College in Wales, where Eric had “immense fun” and perhaps got a taste for world travel from the international mix of students who comprised the student body. For university, Eric’s mother, who was living near the capital at that time, recommended he go to London so he could visit his parents on the weekends but Eric’s contrary nature meant that he opted for the University of Liverpool, where he studied geology. “Geology is really fascinating. It is one of those sciences that are right there in front of you, but you never have all the information you need to give a coherent story of a place. I think I enjoy inventing the bits in between,” he explains. The contrarian in Eric saw him head to Northern Ireland in 1972 during “The Troubles” for postgraduate study. After six-and-a-half “long years” in Libya, Eric and Jola headed to Slovakia where he worked on a dream-job, but which came to an end when money for the project ran out. As Jola was registered as a nurse in the UK, the decision was made to head to Australia where she took a job in Port Hedland. But Queensland stood large in their minds and they made their way to the east, first arriving in Atherton. “We were looking for a place with coconuts. If it didn’t have coconuts it was too cold,” Eric explains. Atherton’s dearth of coconuts saw the travelling duo arrive in Cooktown at the end of 2004, where they have remained ever since. Having designed and built their house here, Eric fills his days pursing his writing career, often under

getting in,” he smiles. Eric’s life of international travel began in earnest after he graduated when Eric started out teaching his specialty of hydrogeology in Papua New Guinea, and then went on to be the PNG government hydrologist at the age of 29. “I got to fly around all sort of places, especially prisons and hospitals, that had water supply problems and needed bores,” he recalls. The years that followed saw Eric work for the Asian Development Bank in Indonesia, at which time he realised there was not much of a living to be made in water, and switched to oil. “I trained as a cementing engineer at a company school in a grapefruit orchard in Bolivia.” As an employer for oil services giant Schlumberger, Eric worked and lived in Singapore, Kalimantan, Brunei and Sarawak. His first taste of Australia was in South Australia, working on a project there, before he returned to Europe and worked in Paris. In 1984, Eric left the world of oil to start his own business renting horse-drawn gypsy caravans to tourists. “It was great fun plodding around England with a gypsy caravan and a horse. What could be better?,” he reasons. “Unfortunately it involves horses so you automatically don’t make any money.” It was a return to the oil business in 1987, for stints

the female nom-de-plume Jacqueline George, and conducting the odd soil test. With many well-reasoned views of Cooktown and the wider world, Eric has rejected the regular suggestions of friends that he would do well as a councillor for the Cook Shire. “I can’t think of anyone less suitable to represent the people of Cooktown than me but I do take an interest in what goes on in Cooktown and how it will develop. “I’m particularly interested in the change of attitude towards tourism which we’ve seen this year and I will do all that I can to encourage that,” he says. Regarding the federal election, Eric says he is “a great fan of the National Broadband Network”. “I think it’s vital for small Country town like Cooktown. Anyone who is in business is going to be hamstrung in the future if they don’t have good internet access and I’m very disappointed the Coalition remains so focused on the city and don’t understand that basic fact.” And what does the future hold for Eric and Jola? “No plans really. We’ve stopped living in other countries but we haven’t stopped travelling. There’s plenty of places in Europe and Asia that I would like to cruise slowly through.” And for Cooktown? “I think the Cooktown people are a great mix. There’s an incredible depth of talent in such a small population and although they whinge continually they take on new ideas quite quickly in the end. “I don’t think Cooktown needs a fundamental shift in direction. It does need some organic growth so that it can be self-supporting. At the moment the economy is too dependent on various government sources,” he concludes.

Employers to bear burden Queensland Law Society has warned proposed changes to the state’s workers’ compensation scheme risk its financial viability and would increase costs to employers. CEO Noela L’Estrange said instead of introducing an impairment threshold for employees to sue their employer for negligence, WorkCover’s annual profit could be used to reduce premiums. “WorkCover’s 2012-13 annual report is yet to be published, however their 2011-12 report showed an operating result of nearly $200 million, after tax,” Ms L’Estrange said. “The 2012-2013 results are, we understand, likely

to be even more favourable and this profit could be used to achieve significant premium savings. “In conjunction with other modest measures, this would easily make premiums for Queensland employers the lowest in the nation. “It’s not rocket science – if there are fewer payouts, WorkCover makes more profit, as recent results show. “If employers are financially incentivised to improve systems, reduce the numbers of injuries and promote good return to work outcomes by timely premium reductions, everyone benefits. “This gives employers the power to positively

influence premium outcomes. “Business groups are urging the government to introduce a 5 per cent impairment threshold that would rule out more than 50 per cent of claims by injured employees. “Other states that have made such moves have seen disputes increase exponentially and scheme costs rise significantly resulting in employers paying higher premiums. “The use of thresholds is a blunt instrument that would destroy Queensland’s record of having the best workers’ compensation scheme in the nation. “Queensland has enjoyed the nation’s lowest average workers compensation premium over the past decade. “The current WorkCover premium is below the average premium rate of the last 16 years and is expected to be in line with 2005-06 rates this year. ”Currently there are disputes in only 3.1 per cent of workers’ compensation claims, which is well below the Australian average, and 81.6 per cent of disputes are settled within three months, a rate almost twice that of Victoria and New South Wales. “Queensland also boasts a 98 per cent return to work rate. “The proposed changes risk our great track record, the envy of the nation, and intensify the risk of further cost imposts on business. “It would be a significant threat to a currently healthy scheme.”

d 140 Years On... e Late surveys a problem THE first thing that should be done in a new town is a town survey, however this was seldom the case in early times. As far as Cooktown was concerned, the town survey was started in February 1874, but by then there were many business houses, homes and other town facilities built along the road to the Palmer Goldfields. The Engineer for Roads, Mr MacMillan, had conducted a survey for the road to Palmerville, but he did not survey other streets in town, nor did he set off building blocks. Therefore, when business people arrived in town, it was a case of the first into the town got the best blocks. In addition, the average town blocks of that time had a frontage of approximately one chain, or about 20 metres. Thus, when taking up positions along the road, buildings were set off on the expectation that this precedent would continue. However, this was not the case, the initial surveyor set off blocks

Needless to say, some people found that their buildings spanned two or more blocks, or were located in the middle of a street. The original Sovereign Hotel being one, and Mr Poole was obliged to move his hotel to the block on the corner of Green and Charlotte Streets, which fortunately he also owned. Not so lucky was Mr Charles Bouel. This gentleman built a restaurant, “Cafe de Paris”, a store and a hotel called

“The Exchange”, all in a prime position near the government wharf. He spent some money benching out the hill in order to give himself sufficient level ground on which to build. This was one of the first establishments that a person arriving in Cooktown would see. Mr Bouel was justifiably proud of his establishment and was mortified when told that it was located in the middle of Webber Esplanade. He complained to many colonial officials and to the local newspapers to

little effect, and was finally moved on in early 1875. The size of the blocks can be gauged by viewing the early buildings that still exist around town. “Jacky Jacky’s”, on the corner of Banks Street and Charlotte Street was an early store in Cooktown, and the building opposite the RSL, that now houses the RSL Sub Branch, is all that remains of an early hotel. Both are typical of early buildings.

PARENTS are being urged to ensure their children are immunised against the potentially deadly measles virus in a first-ever used communication method by Queensland Health. Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young has written to 13,117 parents in the state, whose children have not received their scheduled vaccinations. This is the first time the CHO has worked with the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register to approach families to urge them to vaccinate their children. Dr Young said the recent outbreak of measles had prompted her letter. Since August 13, people had contracted measles as a result of the outbreak, with a total of 21 people contracting the virus in Queensland so far this year. “With a measles outbreak it is imperative as many people as possible are vaccinated,” Dr

Young said. “The Australian Childhood Immunisation Register has told us that 13,117 Queensland children aged between four and six years old are not properly vaccinated, so I’m urging parents to make an appointment to speak to their GP now.

That’s 26 scheduled flights between Cairns and Cooktown from Monday through to Saturday. Fortnightly Sunday flights now available. For a reliable service, you can count on Hinterland Aviation to get you to where you need to be.

“While 90 per cent vaccinated sounds good, it is important to remember that leaves up to 10 per cent of children who aren’t properly protected against measles,” she said.

“This is the first round of letters and we are working with Immunisation Register staff to identify children below four years of age who are not properly vaccinated.

Dr Young said measles was a very serious disease, which could have potentially life threatening consequences. Around one third of adults who contract it require hospitalisation.

“Immunisation is the most effective way to prevent measles and two doses of measles vaccine are needed to provide a high level of protection.”

Early symptoms of measles include runny nose, cough, red eyes, aches and pains and then fever.

Dr Young said most areas of Queensland had more than 90 per cent of children fully vaccinated. The Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast are

slightly below 90 per cent with the Torres Strait and Cape York areas having the highest percentage of vaccinated children.

“If you have these symptoms, even if you don’t have a rash, you may have measles,” she warned. “Stay home and talk to your GP about getting tested and diagnosed.”

Tony takes up dreamtime Dear Diary, I went to bed so upset... It is months since I was Prime Minister, but I still wake up worrying about that obnoxious Mr Rudd and all his dirty tricks. You would imagine that now he has made a complete fool of himself in front of the entire electorate, I would have banished him from my dreams all together. Mind you, he is only taking some of my dreamtime. What is really giving me sleepless nights is the continuing disaster of Tony Abbott. Now it is true I have no time at all for him. He is no “gentleman”. The difference between him and Mr Rudd is that Tony, at least, does not pretend to be friendly, intelligent or good for Australia. Now he is embarrassing the nation by going on foreign visits to people who are well aware of the things he has been saying in parliament. I would have been very ashamed to stand before the Indonesian President and say, “Yes, well, I did say certain things about asylum seekers and people smugglers, but that was just to get elected. The Australian people made me say them; no-one else

actually believed them. You didn’t, did you?” My toes would have been curling to meet the Malaysian Prime Minister after sinking the Malaysian Solution to boat people. Honestly, the things he said about Malaysia - it is just as well he has the Murdoch press as part of his coalition. If I had still been steering the country, they would have been holding my feet to the fire, as well as accusing me of having a pear-shaped figure. (Sometimes that sort of thing really put me off my breakfast for a day or two.) In the early hours, I turn over and over in my bed thinking about what I might have done but, realistically, I know it was impossible. The small mistake would be punished mercilessly in front of everyone. Tony is much luckier. He can do all sorts of things and no-one notices. Did you know he has been using public money to attend weddings? Or to enjoy himself competing as an Iron Man? I thought not. If it had been me, I would have had to pay for everything myself and the only press coverage would have been commenting on the size of my bum...

In her sixth exhibition at NPH, “Full Circle – Cooktown to Cairns”, Louise takes a retrospective look at her artwork over the decade since her first ever exhibition was held at the same location. Her love of landscapes and rural scenery is evident in these works in pastels, creating vibrant images of our tropical world. Some paintings are of familiar landscapes like Archer Point, Finch Bay and other local scenes, but there are also more ambiguous eye-catching images of cloud, sea and sky that she works with so well. Her sense of colour and space are remarkable Louise has mastered the skill of capturing light and shade and beauty in our natural world and is now looking to other ways of expressing her art so this may be your last opportunity to see this stage of her evolution as an artist. “I’m moving into new areas and a different part of the world, so who knows if and when I will re-

The privilege of knowing God Philippians 3:7-11 GOD wants people to know Him. If He had preferred anonymity, He wouldn’t have inspired the writing of a multi-author book about Himself. But since He did, our becoming devoted followers and friends of the Creator requires us to delve deeply into Scripture. First, we learn about God from His word. In reading the Bible, we accumulate facts about His character, principles, and

The second step is to meditate on Scripture by thinking about God’s words and allowing the Holy Spirit to interpret them. The only way to rightly understand this divinely inspired text is with the Spirit’s guidance. Finally, we must apply what we learn. Suppose you read that God

Number of bras and jocks entries not up to expectations

BRAS and jocks are instruments of bodily support, but the number of “arty bras” and “jazzy jocks” entered for judging in Saturday night’s “Mini Fun Festival” let the team ‘down’ in their aspirations of donating to breast and prostate cancer research.

of the categories.

Entrants in the “Arty Bras”, “Jazzy Jocks”, “Crazy Hats” and “Dunny Art” in the event being run by the Cooktown Creative Arts Association paid $5 to enter, $2 of which the Association intended donating to cancer research.

“It was a fund raising venture that allowed people to call on their creative juices and have a bit of fun.”

However, the number of entries was well-down on past years and what was expected, which means the Association will be looking for alternatives at its next meeting at the end of the month. Association member and one of the organisers, Betty Clarke said they were delighted with the quality of entries they did receive, as well as the enthusiasm of those who entered and/or modelled. But they were disappointed with the actual number of entries in each

“We had hoped for more community support with respect to the number of entries for us (the Association), but thought with the added incentive of the donations we wanted to make, we would get more entries,” Betty said.

And fun they did have, despite the disappointment, with a good crowd attending the function to enjoy the “fashion” parade, the barbecue and free entertainment. Betty said they were very grateful to all those who did enter, those who attended and also extended a big vote of thanks to local songbird Lek Jantrarat and the bands, Rough ‘n Ready and Barefoot Belles who provided their services free of charge. “The food was good, the entertainment excellent and the items on display wonderful,” Betty said. “Everyone had a great time.”

For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au

MUDDY RIVER

You will have to spend some time dealing with chores around the house this week. Don’t let a friend’s visit throw you off course. Focus! Romance. You will be in a very practical mood and will finally succeed in sorting out a financial problem in a way that pleases you and your mate.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

An emotional outburst will help you to get what you want, but it may create some unexpected tensions. Make sure that you don’t make a “mountain out of a molehill”! Romance. If you hide your feelings too much, you will become cut off from your partner. You need to open yourself up!

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd)

You will instinctively know the best course of action. Don’t let other people push you off track. You will go far if you stay true to yourself. Romance. Your relationship may be flagging a little. Do something to spruce it up. Check out local magazines to find a fun activity you’ll both enjoy.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.

–Chinese Proverb

SOLUTIONS No. 170

A risk which seems unlikely at the time may nevertheless pay off. Don’t expect to get out more than you put in, however. Romance. You will be bombarded by a new love interest with questions about your past. You don’t have to divulge all information, but giving some insight is a good idea.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)

An age gap may be less of a problem than you believe. You may have much more in common than you think. Team up more often and you’ll see improvements in your daily life. Romance. An admirer will be pleased with your recent work. You may be a little surprised at their reaction!

Why didn’t “Popeye the Sailor” eat kangaroo instead of spinach? “Eat your spinach, you no good infink. Eat it. Eat it!” This is more of a statement than a question. Kangaroo is an amazing ‘power’ food because: • It is a terrific source of high-quality protein; • It is low in fat, with less than two per cent fat; • It contains low levels of “undesirable” saturated fats; • It is a source of heartfriendly omega-3s; • It contains CLA, which has antioxidant properties and may help reduce body fat in humans; • It is a particularly rich source of the minerals iron and zinc; • It is an important source of several Bgroup vitamins, namely riboflavin, niacin, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12; and • It has the Heart Foundation Tick of Approval. Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA): is a “desirable” fat found in kangaroo meat. Research shows that CLA has antioxidant properties and may help reduce body fat in humans.

Iron: Due to a misprint, spinach was mistakenly scripted to be ten times the amount of iron it actually had, hence why poor Popeye was condoned to eat so many tins of the stuff. It wasn’t until a publication in the British Journal of Medicine in 1981 that this little “slip-up” became widely known! Yes, spinach is a super food, and contains high levels of calcium, folic acid, potassium, iron, magnesium, vitamins C and A, lutein and zeaxanthin, which help to steady our heartbeat and blood pressure, produce red blood cells, and help with bone, eye and neural tube health. Broccoli according to Men’s Health is more densely packed with vitamins and minerals than any other food and kale is equally as good if not better. Kangaroo meat is a particular rich source of iron. In fact, a 150g serve of kangaroo steak or fillet provides 41 per cent of the recommended dietary intake (RDI) for iron. Zinc: Kangaroo meat is a good source of this important mineral. Indeed, a 150g serve of kangaroo steak provides over

a quarter (28 per cent) of the RDI. The other good news is that zinc found in animal foods, like red meat and seafood, is better absorbed than the iron from plant foods. B-Group vitamins: Kangaroo meat is an important source of several B-group vitamins, namely riboflavin, niacin, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12. For example, a 150g serve of kangaroo loin fillet typically provides 36 per cent of the RDI for riboflavin, 63 per cent of the RDI for niacin, 80 per cent of the RDI for Vitamin B6 and over 100 per cent of the RDI for Vitamin B12, which helps to break down fats and proteins to produce energy. So if there are any Popeye fans out there, sorry to disappoint, but you can be a little more adventurous than eating just spinach for your extra surge of “power”, and if you are a man and wanting to impress the delightful “Olive Oyl” in your life, why don’t you cook her a fillet of kangaroo on the barbecue tonight with some nice fresh, vibrant salad?

Kangaroo meat is a real surprise packet as a healthy eating option for humans. Photo: MICHELLE HODGKISS.

Keatings Lagoon is brilliant at the moment. A family of three brolgas - Mum, dad and offspring - dropped in to show their grace and delicate colours to Ron and Christine Barrt who come from the Netherlands.

Bottom left: Brolga family at Keatings Lagoon. Bottom right: Ron and Christine Barrt from the Netherlands with James Cook.

Back in 1865, John Gould noted that they were called “native companions” by the locals. Brolgas mate for life and are part of the crane family with their close relatives, the Sarus crane. The brolga’s blackish dewlap differentiates it from the Sarus crane, which has a longer red marking on its neck. The brolga family will breed again towards the end of the wet season. We didn’t see the wonderful ritual mating dance of the brolgas this time. The Barrts are interested in history and love wildlife, especially birds, so Cooktown was a natural spot to visit. They lamented the fact that the Dutch presence in Australia, starting in 1606 with the Duyfken on the East Coast of Cape York, and forged by the commercially minded VOC (Dutch Trading Company) is not more used in tourist publicity. The Barrts graciously stood alongside Cook’s statue to show that they bear no grudges at English James Cook claiming Australia for King George and Mother England. Darren

and

Fiona

Earnshaw come from Gosford and are passionate about wildlife. In fact, the whole family are nuts about it. Fiona’s uncle famously took a year off his other responsibilities to break the 12-month record for bird-spotting in Australia. Such obsessions make us interesting! We saw some beautiful pelicans gliding among the waterlilies at Keatings. Now, pelicans can be a bit like rats down south, but seeing them at Keatings in their unique setting, with cormorants, royal spoonbills, magpie geese, pacific black duck,

hard head duck, pygmy geese and a greater egret around them was pretty special. The pelicans at Keatings Lagoon are healthy, sparkling clean and have beautiful feather colouring, especially alongside the water lilies. Darren and Fiona reckon that Cooktown should annually promote a three month bird festival at Keatings, but is that really such a good idea? It might make the place too busy, just when businesses are looking for a rest. Wujal Wujal (Bloomfield) Falls are, as always, running well, and had an extra aura of colouring

with its annual burning last weekend. The Wujal council did a great job removing the two subsequent tree falls across the track to the Falls first up Monday morning. Work at Woobadda Creek and the Bloomfield River are in a consolidation phase, which means that offices are in place, gear is being transported, but not much else is happening at the moment. Despite rumours, there are, apparently no particular obstacles, such as permits, to the major work commencing. Expect longish delays along the road around

Ayton and Cedar Bay, as loads of rock are being dumped and converted to something more decent and trafficable. The Bloomfield Track is generally okay, babout 300 metres of corrugations up Donavans and Cowie Ranges from the north are disgraceful! So let’s hope that a little work will be done before the rains set in. Happy travelling, Mike and Trish D’Arcy D’Arcy of Daintree 4WD Tours Phone: +61 7 4098 9180 www.darcy of daintree. com.au

Fish and anglers excited by warmer conditions THE warmer weather has excited the fish, which is exciting for us all! The conditions for offshore fishing have been good, although a few days were rather windy. Although middle part of this week has been reasonably calm for reef fishing, the offshore winds are predicted to increase from late in the weekend, which means the best places to go after barramundi are the coastal and inland rivers and streams, including Lakefield National Park. The season closure for barramundi is midday, November 1, but the best time to maximise your chances are the six days before

a full moon, and the six days before a new moon. Our next full moon is Saturday, October 27, while the new moon will occur on Sunday, November 3. The Endeavour River and the Wharf have continued to provide anglers with fish and fun. Mackerel in the mornings and reef fish through the day with barramundi included in the fish landed over the last week. Live bait continues to lure the big ones from off the Wharf, with queenfish, golden trevally and mangrove Jack doing well. The opening in the rock wall that is being built adjacent to the Cooktown Wharf is

Crocs’ players win cricket cup awards

a new hot spot. Lure casters are having fun working the opening in the wall as the bait fish have been using the shelter of the wall, thus attracting the big fish. The Bertram Eagle Yachts 27th Black Marlin Classic 2013, Lizard Island Tournament is currently running through to Saturday, October 19. It is providing excitement for the anglers chasing the famous game fish and for us here on land, as we are able to see some of the finest sports and game fishing boats tie up at the Wharf. Singing like cane toads a family trait THIS week’s run was hosted by Yo-Yo and Moses and was all the more special because Yo-Yo had imported two family members from Poland who wanted to study the folkways of Australia. Of course, the Hash is an excellent place to start because it is where you can see the true Aussie spirit at work. We started with a traditional argument about whether it was 5.30 and time to begin the run, or whether the hare’s enthusiasm had led him to start at 5.29 instead. That’s the Hash - like herding cats. They were herded to the bottom of Moses’s road, and the chaos started. The hare had made the mistake of setting a simple check and false trail. Three quarters of the pack reacted by standing at the road junction and bleating like sheep. The rest wandered aimlessly around all the places where the real trail wasn’t. Thank goodness Cracklin found paper and they were off!

The trail wove along field breaks to the far end of Brown Street, and then back to a friendly nurse’s house for a drink stop. Yes, this was where Cracklin and Matchbox had left the drink stop last week. Luckily, it still tasted nice and fortified the pack for

the run (walk) home. Back at the bash, GM Thermo was quick to welcome the return of Lunasee, and then welcome the two virgin runners from Poland. Great, we now had two singers to support Yo-Yo’s Polish party piece which, believe it or not, translates as “I have an old hat”. Unfortunately, it seems that singing like cane toads runs in Yo-Yo’s family and the resulting song was simply three times worse than normal. Thank goodness Yo-Yo can cook, and all was forgiven when she produced a pork banquet fit for a king (but not for a Soggy, who cannot stomach pork or kangaroo). This was followed by “szarlotka z budyniem” (apple cake with custard), which silenced the even greediest hashers. Next week’s run will be hosted by F*&t and Thermo, but will start at Culvert 271 on the Lakeland road, 5.30 on Monday, October 21. The last time F*&t tried this arcane method of positioning was a disaster, so just drive up and down the road between the Annan and the Archer Point turn-off until you see him waiting beside the road. New boy Geoff shoots well despite windy conditions

NEW Cape York SSAA club member Geoff came along to Saturday’s Shotgun shoot as a spectator initially, but ended up shooting three events of 25 targets with credible results. The windy conditions were quite a challenge, which made Geoff’s results pretty good for a first time effort.

Shooting is very much a family affair for Cape York SSAA members, Jim, Kristin and Jason Williams, seen here ready for Saturday’s shoot. Photo: GARY HUTCHISON. This weekend’s schedule of events at the SSAA Cameron Creek Range will see a Service Rifle practice on Saturday, October

19 at 1pm, which will be followed by a Pistol Shoot at 3pm. Then on Sunday, a Service Rifle shoot will

start at 9am. For details contact your Discipline Captains. Anne Williams Secretary

Panthers prowl into final in 7-ball, heart-stopper victory total on 258. Lingy remained not out on 13, while Scott top-scored with 85 not out. After a hearty lunch courtesy of Helen and Dom, BMP set about the chase with Clive and Glen Kulka. The score reached 36 when Clive was caught behind by Wal off Craig’s bowling for 18. Adrian was next, but was soon out, bowled by Craig for four. George joined Glen in the middle and together they added 47 runs before Glen became the first victim of the wily bowling of Steve “cracked ribs” Wilton, bowled for a well-made 40 with the score on 93. Stumpy Kulka was out next ball, well caught in the outfield by Shaun. With the last ball of his first over, Steve had George caught, again in the outfield by Shaun, for nine. BMP went to the first drinks break at 5 for 112. Eril and Asho steadied things and got BMP back on track, not losing a wicket and putting together a 132 run partnership to go to the second drinks break with the score at 227. The Diggers needed wickets and they needed them quick. Straight after the break, Brodie broke through, getting Asho to pop one up and Lingy took a great catch to dismiss him for 29. Wilbur joined Eril and took the score to 251, when Eril nicked one behind to Wal off the bowling of Brodie for a very well-compiled 99 runs. Wilbur was out, four runs later and BMP still had four runs to get for victory and the Diggers needed just one more wicket to book a ticket into the grand final. Fortunately for BMP, Brett Pickup was able to take them across the line with seven balls to spare. Eril was Man of the Match for his batting heroics. Both teams are reminded that with the grand final being a 50over affair, they are required to report to the Queens Gardens at 10am. Best of luck to both teams. See you there.

By WAL WELSH THE Black Mountain Panthers booked their berth in this weekend’s cricket final with a heart-stopping seven-ball victory over the Council Diggers last Sunday. Facing up against BMP in the 50-over grand final, will be the Marton Invitation X1, who were first into the decider after a solid season saw them atop the premiership ladder. However, it was Sunday’s 40over semi final that occupied the focus of those who attended the Gardens to see who would relegated to spectator status for next weekend’s match. In misty conditions, BMP won the toss and elected to field, with Billy Dukes and Shaun Law opening for the Diggers. The boys got off to a great start and amassed 34 runs before Shaun was caught by Eril Ross-Kelly off the bowling of Clive Kulka for 12. Billy was out for 18 a few overs later, bowled by Billy Harrigan. This brought Mark Whitman and Steve Law together in the middle and these two managed to get to the first drinks break without losing another wicket with the score at 75. Steve was out with the total at 101, stumped by Adrian Kulka off the bowling of Wilbur Kulka for eight. Mark was next to go, bowled by Eril for a well-made 53. Brodie Welsh and Scott Stallan added another 20 odd runs before Brodie was caught by Ashley Lyall off Adrian’s bowling for six. Wal and Scotty put on another 47 runs before Wal nicked a Billy Harrigan delivery to be caught behind by Adrian with the score at 197. Craig Wason was next and made a couple before he was caught by George Kulka off Billy’s bowling. Thomas Ling joined Scott, and together put on another 47 runs in the next five overs to see out the Diggers innings with the
