Gove’s Biggest cuppa THE East Arnhem Chamber of Commerce (EACC) hosted an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea last week and raised $500.50. Chamber members set up in Endeavour Square and one of the highlights of the morning was the presentation of prizes to primary school students who had entered a colouring-in competition. Students from the Nhulunbuy Primary School and Nhulunbuy Christian College entered the competition. The first prize went to Shelbie
from Year 1 from NCC, second to Katie from Year 2 at NPS and third to Lukas from year 2 at NPS. The annual event raises much needed funds for Cancer research, prevention programs and support services. Special treats were donated by Rosebud’s Cupcake Factory who donated 300 small cupcakes for those stopping by for a cuppa. The EACC executive officer Mache Eloff said they had an excellent response.
“We had some very generous sponsors including Woolworths, the Nhulunbuy Corporation, Gove FM and Lisa and Craig Pullen which all helped make it so successful,” she said. “The Chamber wants to say a big thank you to everyone who donated to this special cause as well as all the volunteers who donated their time.” More photos Page 7. >>
Theatre tickets are selling fast THE current production for the Gove Arts Theatre is Barbecue which opened on Friday night. Director Chris Andrews said he was pleased with the performance on opening night and the cast of experienced actors and novices did an outstanding job. As the name implies the stage is set around the Aussie barbecue and follows the efforts of the Cooper family to settle into their new home in Grand Bay. The show will run on June 1-2-8-9 and tickets are selling fast with the closing night already sold out. Shelley Martin was outside Woolworths on Saturday morning selling the last of the tickets for that night’s production and said there were still a few tickets left for other nights. Tickets are $40 each and are available from Lynne Walker’s office.

Partnership to eliminate scabies as health issue BY MARJO HALLOWELL
AN historic Memorandum of Understanding was signed in Yirrkala on Saturday, solidifying a partnership in eliminating scabies as a health issue. One Disease at a Time, Miwatj Health and the Department of Health of the Northern Territory, signed an agreement to systematically target and eliminate one disease at a time. One Disease at a Time (ODAAT), founded by Dr Sam Prince, is a non-government organisation and he signed the agreement along with chair of Miwatj Health John Morgan and chief executive of NT Health Jeff Moffet. Scabies is a highly contagious skin disease caused by the human scabies parasite and, in some Indigenous communities in the Territory, about
seven out of 10 infants suffer from scabies at least once before their first birthday. If left untreated, secondary bacterial infections are common. These infections have strong associations with kidney failure and rheumatic heart disease, rates of which in the NT are among the highest in the world. At the signing, Traditional Owner Djwalpi Marika said there had been too many deaths among his people.. “This is the start of a new journey with effectiveness and sustainability,” Mr Marika said. “This will embrace the dreams and visions of Yolngu people - particularly in relation to primary health care.” Dr Prince said that they started the war against scabies a year ago. “The results have been nothing short of ground-breaking,” he said.
“I cannot commend the members more highly as the disease has already significantly been reduced. “We gain the insight of how to treat it only because the Yolngu people guided us every step of the way. “This is the first time in the Northern Territory’s history that these powerful stakeholders are side by side, working together in a co-ordinated approach to pit their collective wills against the common foe that is scabies. Miwatj Health is a shining beacon of hope in Aboriginal health,” Dr Prince said. Chief executive officer of Miwatj Eddie Mulholland also stressed the significance of partnership and the MOU signing. “Miwatj Health sees a partnership with the One Disease at a Time
Foundation as an opportunity to concentrate scarce health care resources on this problem,” Mr Mullholland said. “We believe this intensive focus, and the community development approach being taken by ODAAT, holds the greatest possibility of progress in addressing this affliction which has blighted the lives of so many Yolngu communities for so long.” The initiative has garnered support from Australia’s Governor General Quentin Bryce. “I am so proud of the leadership and determination of Dr Sam Prince, his supporters and team of professionals who are effecting profound change. I also want to congratulate Mitwaj Health on its 20thanniversary - a significant milestone,” Ms Bryce said.
Miwatji celebrates 20 years of service < < From Page 1. “In 2010 Miwatj received $2.1m to purchase, refurbish and fit out a property next to the existing clinic at Nhulunbuy. “This year the Australian Government provided $8.9 million to support Miwatj’s programs and we will provide a further $2.5 million for Miwatj to acquire additional staff housing at Nhulunbuy to accommodate health workers. “This investment recognises the leadership demonstrated by the Miwatj Health Aboriginal Corporation and the commitment to its growth as an organisation.”
Mr Snowdon acknowledged the forward thinking of NT Health and Miwatj in their approach to electronic records of patients which he said was the best in the country. “Miwatj has proved that regional health innitiatives are sustainable. “The Australian Government congratulates Miwatj on this significant milestone and its work improving the health of the Aboriginal residents of the East Arnhem region,” he said. Mr Snowdon was assited by two local boys to officially open the building and Makei Kuiha, 4, and Josiah Mununggurr, 8, officially declared the building open.

STAFF, parents and students declare Nhulunbuy Christian College’s new iPad program a success and Apple representatives have lauded the College’s program. At a recent meeting with Northern Territory Christian Schools Association’s (NTCSA) I.T. consultant Peter Kent in Darwin, Apple education representatives from South Australia were extremely impressed by the enthusiasm and pioneering initiative shown by NCC in their iPad rollout program. Principal Mr Steve Venour said NCC teachers worked with the iPad for much of last year to investigate how the device would work as an educational and learning tool and as a result the iPad program was implemented for years 6-9 this year. “Technology doesn’t replace what students learn; it’s a tool that can transform how they learn and this is critical in an education system that seeks to engage students every day,” Mr Venour said. “The quality of work the kids are producing on the iPads is extraordinary but it is watching their engagement with learning that is the most rewarding. “For instance in Year 9 mathematics, instead of telling students how to draw straight line graphs, the students did their own research and developed instructional video of their own to demonstrate their mastery. “Whilst this has been possible before the iPads make the process quick and accessible for the kids. “The recent development of interactive textbooks embedded with video and interactive activities will only enhance student interest further. “Increasingly the role of a teacher is not just about content; students can access content from the internet in seconds independently from the teacher . . . but we do have to teach them about wisdom, ethics, depth and critical thinking. “It’s vital they learn to critique and analyse.” Parent forums have been an important part of the implementation process. “We’ve spent a lot of time making sure parents are familiar with the technology and plan more forums to

continue the education of parents to help them with appropriate supervision of kids and technology. “We’ve also included a ‘digital discipleship’ project where we talk to kids about issues and concerns about cyberspace including online privacy issues and cyber bullying,” Mr Venour said. Middle school teacher Joanne Duncan is impressed by the productive time gained in the classroom. “In a practical sense the iPad is on and off instantly and there’s no wasted time waiting for laptops to start up or programs to load. So it’s easier for students to use the device naturally in the course of the lesson. “I’ve found this means students are able to focus on

improving core academic skills at a deeper level and the standard and quality of work being produced is certainly reflecting this,” Mrs Duncan said. Year 8 student Sally Sprague believes the apps are brilliant. “iPads are easier to use because it’s a touch screen and we can find information fast. We can flick between apps quickly so it doesn’t take a whole day for our word, powerpoint, internet or publisher to load. “And it’s good because we can put all our apps in separate folders and everything is on our desktop so we don’t have to search for the apps,” Sally said. Mr Venour acknowledges it will take some time for traditional teaching methods to change to suit the new paradigm and there is always
A PRECAUTIONARY advice for drinking water (water boil alert) was issued last week for the Gunbalanya Community following the detection of the E. coli bacteria in the community’s water supply. DoH Environmental Health senior program development officer Karen Beirne said that, in the meantime as a precautionary
room for improvement but it is a very rewarding time to be teaching at the College. “In the five years my family has been in Nhulunbuy, it feels like we’ve been a part of watching the school really mature. “It is not just the introduction of the iPads. “The addition of a learning enhancement coordinator, the reading to learn program for literacy intervention, a gifted and talented program and the embracing of the Kids Matters holistic approach to well-being are all needed steps we have taken to improve the College this year,” he said. “All teachers want to see kids succeed and having a group of people help unlock the barriers to accessing education is wonderful - in the end that’s what is most satisfying.”
measure, it is recommended that water for drinking, food preparation and oral hygiene is obtained from either packaged bottled water or by boiling tap water and allowing to cool prior to use. “Work is now underway by Power and Water Corporation to flush the water supply system, monitor the chlorine in the system and ensure maximum disinfection occurs to kill any bacteria present. Woman arrested on drug charges A 28-year-old woman was arrested at the Darwin Airport last week after allegedly being found in possession of a trafficable amount of methamphetamine.
Ramingining man flown to Darwin after attack by cow
Detective Sergeant Andrew Bedwell said the woman, who arrived on a flight from Perth, was arrested after information was obtained as part of an on-going operation dealing with drugs to Darwin and remote Arnhem communities. “Members from the Northern Investigation Section and the Northern Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk were made aware that a trafficable amount of methamphetamine was being transported by the woman,” he said. “Passengers on the flight were screened and the woman allegedly told Police she was in possession of methamphetamines.
“Police allege the woman had a trafficable amount of methamphetamine, approximately 50 grams, concealed. “Methamphetamine is a dangerous drug in the community and is having devastating consequences in remote communities. “Police will not stop trying to stop the trafficking of this illegal and life-shattering drug. “We encourage any member of the public who has information on people moving illicit drugs in the Northern Territory to contact Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. “The woman was conveyed to the

From the Fresh Food People Careflight takes injured man to Darwin. A MAN attacked by a cow at Ramingining was flown to Darwin for further treatment last Friday. A CareFight doctor and nurse flew to Ramingining to transfer the 62-year-old man to Royal Darwin Hospital after adverse weather made an overnight retrieval flight unsafe. The man was attacked by the cow as he stepped from his truck to open a gate leading to a work shed on Thursday afternoon. The normally friendly bovine threw the man into the air then stomped on him inflicting chest injuries. Another man who went to his aid also was attacked as he distracted the cow from the injured man and luckily escaped with leg injuries. After overnight treatment at the health clinic at Ramingining the man was flown, in a stable condition, to Darwin for further assesment.

engage and attract their visitors including students from other year levels and parents and friends. “Some of the activities the students created were mini golf, pinatas, a ‘celebrity heads’ game and a surf photo booth. The Expo finished with a morning tea, in which each of the students had prepared a traditional dish from their country to share with everyone,” Mrs Stone said. “The Year 6 students did an amazing job throughout the day. “The stalls looked great, they interacted well with visitors about their chosen countries and the best part of all is that they all worked so well together to pull the Expo off. “I was really proud of every one of them.” A highlight for many students was a visit by NT member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker. “We want to say a huge thank you to Lynne for taking the time to experience the Expo and for having such fun with it.”

Permits – A Need To Know It is a requirement for all Ngapaki (non-Yolngu) people wanting to access Aboriginal land to have an access permit in their possession. Dhimurru issues access permits for Designated Recreation Areas with delegated authority from the Northern Land Council, pursuant to the Northern Territory Aboriginal Land Act 1979. Close to Nhulunbuy these permit areas include Nhulun (Mt Saunders), Gayngaru (Town Lagoon), Gadalathami (Town Beach), Gumuniya (Buffalo Creek), Wirrwawuy, Middle Beach, Galuru (East Woody Beach), and Dhamatjinya (East Woody Island). For information on all areas Dhimurru issues access permits for, please go to our website www.dhimurru.com.au. ABOVE: Prize giving at the colouring in competition. BELOW: Children line up for some refreshments.
All Ngapaki must obtain an access permit from Dhimurru before entering any of the Designated Recreation Areas. Access permits are available for periods of 7 days, 2 months, or 12 months (renewable annually). Fees are charged for permits, and this income helps Dhimurru to undertake its management activities in the Dhimurru Indigenous Protected Areas. Special Permits are issued for areas that are under threat from overuse and/or where exclusive opportunities for single group camping is being provided – the number of vehicles allowed in these areas is limited at any one time. If you intend visiting any of these areas, you need a Special Access Permit in addition to your General Access Permit. Special Permits are issued on a day/day basis, meaning that permits must be obtained for each day that you intend to visit a Dhimurru Special Recreation Area. This includes the day’s during which you enter and exit the Designated Recreation Area.
A student presents Mache Eloff from the EACC with a donation on behalf of Nhulunbuy Primary School.
Liquor management arrangements in the Dhimurru IPA are organised so the holders of a Liquor Permit can carry and consume alcohol in some of the Designated Recreation Areas. Both the Liquor Permit and your Dhimurru Access Permit prohibit beer and mixed drinks in stubbies or glass containers in any of the Dhimurru Designated Recreational Areas. Note Gumuniya (Buffalo Creek), Lombuy (Crocodile Creek), Galaru (East Woody), Nhulun (Mount Saunders) & Gadalathami (Town Beach) are designated dry areas – No alcohol permitted. letters to the editor Sole survivor’s key role in re-centralising his country A RECENT edition of the Arafura Times briefly mentioned the bombing of Milingimbi. An accurate but brief story it was. Not so with the NT News edition of May 9 2012 that contained a brief article entitled “Salute to Milingimbi bombing” on page 9. This article mentioned the Naval vessel Patricia Camm and unfortunately contains a significant error. This article fails to indicate the full impact of the boat’s sinking on the Yolngu communities of the area of North East Arnhem Land. The Patricia Camm was a naval vessel called at Galiwinku aka Elcho Island on January 21, 1943. The following day after leaving the Island the Patricia Camm was bombed. In contrast to the version of history portrayed in the NT News article the Reverend Leonard Kentish who was aboard the Patricia Camm was not drowned
during the sinking of the boat. Rather he was captured by the Japanese pilot and taken onboard the attackers’ sea-plane. Reverend Kentish was later beheaded by the Japanese at Dobo in the Aru Islands. It is believed that this occurred about two weeks after his capture. Previous articles in the NT News have told the Kentish story more accurately than Wednesday’s poor attempt. The other issue with the story is that the survivors of the original bombing of the boat were then repeatedly strafed by the plane whilst they were struggling in the water. The casualties of this attack included two Yolngu men from the Yirrkala community. These men were members of a trio that included the subsequently renowned Yolngu artist and Manggalili leader Narritjin Maymuru. The men had
Nhulunbuy is not receiving adequate attention: Trudgen I have received some feedback about the Arafura Times article ‘Independent Sets Sights on Nhulunbuy’. A resident of Nhulunbuy was wondering what I felt about issues facing Nhulunbuy town itself. I replied that although I now live in Galiwinku, in the north west of the electorate, I grew up in Nhulunbuy and most of my immediate family still lives there. I am well aware that Nhulunbuy, as a strategic service centre, does not receive adequate attention from government. I will work to remedy this problem, especially in areas of health services, education, housing and basic service delivery (including food supply). I am aware of other concerns like dog and weed control. I will invest time to work with stakeholders and negotiate solutions for these matters and any other matters that effect Nhulunbuy residents. Nhulunbuy is a powerful town and, if we have a member that can cross all social divides, it will prosper. All the best. Kendall Trudgen (pictured), Independent Candidate, for Nhulunbuy.
paddled a canoe from Yirrkala to Galiwinku at the bequest of Mr Harold Thornell, missionary at Yirrkala Mission. Thornell was worried that the latest version of the coast watcher’s code had not arrived and he wanted the men to collect the Mission mail in anticipation that it would contain the new code book! Alas that was not to be. Narritjin, as the sole survivor of the Yirrkala group, played a vital role in guiding the other survivors through part of the Wessel Islands as they awaited rescue. He had to wait until February 10 before arriving back at Yirrkala to deliver his sad news of the loss of his two Yolngu colleagues. Narritjin went on to have a key role in painting various Bark Petitions that were submitted to Federal Parliament from the Yolngu community at Yirrkala in 1963. Later on he was Creative Arts

Fellow at ANU in 1978. Along with numerous Yolngu leaders of the times Narritjin had a key role in re-centralizing his country in his life in what is often referred to as the Homelands Movement. Another survivor the Patricia Camm’s First Lieutenant, SubLieutenant John Leggoe, RANVR went on to serve in senior roles at “The West Australian” in Perth for decades. What about their comrades? This tragic story, I believe, is the sole time that a capture by the Japanese occurred in Australian waters. With the seventieth anniversary approaching in early 2013 the NT News editors might now devote some time to adequately researching the story of the World War 2 era in this North Eastern part of the NT and to then to accurately tell it. Australia has hottest 60 years in a millenium, scientists find
Study of tree rings, coral and ice cores finds unnatural spike in temperatures that lines up with man-made climate change
DR JOELLE GERGIS From THE GUARDIAN
THE last 60 years have been the hottest in Australasia for a millennium and cannot be explained by natural causes, according to a new report by scientists that supports the case for a reduction in manmade carbon emissions. In the first major study of its kind in the region, scientists at the University of Melbourne used natural data from 27 climate indicators, including tree rings, corals and ice cores to map temperature trends over the past 1000 years. “Our study revealed that recent warming in a 1000-year context is highly unusual and cannot be explained by natural factors alone, suggesting a strong influence of human-caused climate change in the Australasian region,” said the study’s lead researcher, Dr Joelle Gergis. The climate reconstruction was done in 3000 different ways and concluded with 95 per cent accuracy that no other period in the past 1000
years match or exceeded post-1950 warming in Australia. The study, published in the Journal of Climate, will be part of Australia’s contribution to the fifth Intergovernmetal Panel on Climate Change report, due in 2014. As part of the study, climate modellers used the natural data to analyse the impact of both natural events, like volcanic eruptions in the pre-industrial era, and the impact of human-induced climate change such as greenhouse gasses emissions on temperatures in the last millennium. Dr Steven Phipps, from the Climate Change Research Centre at the University of New South Wales, who carried out the modeling, said the study demonstrated strong human influence on the climate in the region. “The models showed that prior to 1850 there were not any long-term trends and temperature variations were likely to be caused by natural climate variability which is a random process,” he said.
Woolies staff committed to Hospital Children’s Ward
“But [the modeling showed] 20th-century warming significantly exceeds the amplitude of natural climate variability and demonstrates that the recent warming experience in Australia is unprecedented within the context of the last millennium.”
WOOLWORTHS staff are continuing their strong commitment to raising funds for the Children’s ward at the local hospital. Every Sunday a different department will host the barbecue outside the store in Endeavour Square with all funds going towards their contributions to the Gove District Hospital. It was decided last year that the annual Kids’ Fresh fundraiser would stay local

and go to benefit the children in Gove. The staff, under the direction of Bev Wheeler, have carried on the fundraising at whatever opportunity arises and have made several of their own opportunities including the Sunday morning barbecue. A cheque for over $7000 was presented to the Hospital for a play area outside the children’s ward as a result of last year’s efforts and they hope to raise more this year.
POOR mobile coverage across the nation is the biggest telecommunications concern for regional Australians, an independent review says. The businesspectator.com.au website reports the government released the 2011/12 Regional Telecommunications Independent Committee Review last week. The report said the adequacy of mobile voice and broadband services was raised in all 20 regional locations and in around two-thirds of the 222 submissions. “The committee accepts that there are commercial limits to expanding mobile network

‘Forgotten Australians’ asked to take part in research A SOUTHERN Cross University PhD candidate would like Forgotten Australians to participate in his research so that future government policies can be developed to meet the special requirements of this population as they age. A Forgotten Australian is described as an Australian-born, non-Indigenous person, who as a child lived at some time in institutional out-of-home care within Australia before 1974. It is estimated there were as many as 500,000 Forgotten Australians. In 2009 the then Prime Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd, apologised to
the Forgotten Australians for abuses they suffered in institutions at the hands of government and non-profit organisations. As part of the apology, Mr Rudd identified this group of Australians as a special needs group, or people who may require special services as they age. To better understand what some of these needs might be PhD candidate Gregory Smith, himself a Forgotten Australian, is researching how a Forgotten Australian may experience feelings of belonging or of not belonging in relation to communities, families, relationships and work places.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) A dream will tell you everything that you need to know about a new friend. Your feelings towards this person may be ambiguous: if you go through your dream carefully you will be able to piece everything together. Romance. Your partner may be behaving a little strangely at the moment. Try to find out what is going on.
VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) Don’t give a secret away too soon! An air of mystery will make your friends believe that you are hiding more than you really are. Romance. Be careful not to be influenced too much by your emotions. You need a clear head at the moment.
LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) A move which is not really in your best interests should be forgotten about. You want to make a change in your career but this is not the right time. Romance. You might be feeling a little bit unloved. Let your partner know that you would like more support before this issue starts to create tension between you.
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) A surge of will-power is all you need to finally break a bad habit. Do your best not to slip back into your old ways! Romance. Your romantic life could be a little low-key at the moment. You may have to wait a week or so before things liven up. Be patient, and don’t make any rash moves in the meantime!
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) A more positive attitude will help you to get over a frustration which has been dogging you over the past few weeks. Romance. You will be surprised when someone whom you were introduced to wants to get in touch. This person may not have made much of an impact on you at the time, but they will do so soon!
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) Someone will let you down rather badly this week, perhaps without meaning to. Be careful of a situation which seems too good to be true. Romance. Your friends will be intrigued to find out more about the person you have been spending so much time with recently. Keep the mystery up as long as you can.
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th) A friend whom you have not seen for a long time will shortly come back into your life. This person has changed a lot since the last time you saw them. Romance. Your emotions will be especially strong at the moment. You will respond well, so long as your partner treats you gently and with respect.
PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) A friend whom you can normally rely on may suddenly let you down. This might not be the best time to put pressure on them, however, as they have other problems which you are not aware of. Romance. Your relationship will gradually strengthen over this week, so long as you are patient. If you try to rush things you will lose more than you gain.

Rhys had made such and impression in the short time he has been playing in the Brisbane competition that the University club has arrangedfpr Queensland Reds fullback Johno Lance to work with him to future his development. Until now Rhys has played his entire rugby union career as an East Arnhem Rugby Union player. In an extract from the University of Queensland media website ‘Prem Colts power over Norths’ by Jarrod Willis, Rhys’ efforts were noted: ‘A high-class effort from flyhalf Rhys Mulholland in the second-half made the difference in the end, giving a few eye-catching, no-look inside balls to put his team-mates through the advantage line on several occassions pushing his side out to a 38-7 win. “Rhysy (Rhys Mulholland) is originally from the Northern Territory and hasn’t really played much structural footy, but is a good talent and coming along really well,” coach Cameron MacIntosh said.’

New musical career for grannies The Eye of the Cyclone WERE you watching the build up to the Eurovision Song Contest last week? It has been a carnival to put all other carnivals in the shade. It has everything - politics, beautiful people, a venue more glitzy than Las Vegas, revolting students, invading geriatrics, television teams, radio teams, security teams, all that was missing was a flying visit by a well-groomed but brain-dead American Presidential Hopeful. Oh, I was forgetting. And music. Well, sort of music. Any Eurovision song has to be a hit with the jury in milliseconds, or it will be dumped in the rush to get through all the other songs. It needs instant impact, or nothing. It will make it, or be forgotten instantly like yesterday’s Tweet or SMS. For the winner, there is the immense satisfaction of standing in the spotlights, holding a golden prize and crying through their national anthem. Australians would be absolute
naturals for a competition like that. We love glitzy, we love competitions, and we hunger for those golden prizes. So how come we were not there? The stars of the show were the babushki from Buranovo, a group of older ladies from the Udmurt Republic of Central Russia. They have a problem. Their village of 658 souls lacks a church, and they lack the money to build one. They decided to raise funds by forming a pop group. They are not young - the six of them have 486 years between them - and they do not seem to have grasped the basics of stage presentation for female pop singers. No spray-on clothes and highkicking dances for them. They wear colourful head scarfs, and many layers of traditional dresses (to keep the Russian cold out), topped off with their best pinafores - beautiful patchwork designs in red plus all sorts of other colours.
They keep all 12 feet firmly on the ground as they sing, but they do bob vigorously up and down in time to their music. They look wonderfully like a line of Russian dolls on springs. The point is not whether they win (they didn’t, they came second) but that they have competed. And where were our grandmothers? Sitting on the veranda with a dark’n’stormy, no doubt. Australia deserves better. So Granny, go buy yourself new traditional daggy shorts and tee shirts, sew sequins onto your thongs, and start practising! I expect to see you up there next year.

Gove Closed Tennis titles great start to the year TENNIS Gove has hit the ground running in 2012. Following on from winning National awards with Tennis Australia, the club is continuing to grow and develop, and to hit the year into gear the Gove Closed tournament was played with 96 competitors competing over two weekends of tennis. Starting with the juniors, 53 competitors played in red, orange and green ball events and 12’s and 16-and-under singles and doubles. With the weather conditions somewhat rain affected, match formats were reduced. A record number of entries in the green ball and orange ball divisions made for great junior tennis. With 20 competitors lined up in the green ball, there was a mixture of the regulars but the highlight was the number of new competitors. With 34 matches played to get an eventual winner, it took 242 games and 1102 minutes to play.
A very close contest in the orange ball singles with Jaylee Johnson, Jamie Jones, Jacob Meersbergen and Charlie Miller making it through to the semi-final. Some great tennis and rallies from all players but it was Jacob over Charlie and Jamie over Jaylee that made it through to the final. A great contest between Jamie and Jacob with the boys chasing every ball. Finally Jacob got over the line with a very close 4-3 win. Palak Bangia and Mackenzie Asplin went through to the orange ball consolation final. Palak was too strong and took the consolation final 4-0. In the orange ball doubles, Charlie Miller and Remi Grieve were too strong for their opponents not dropping a match or a game having convincing wins, three wins, 12 games for and 0 games against. Coming in second place was new players to the club Josh Blundell and Laughlan Merrett. The boys did a great job for their first tournament and will be tough to beat in future events. In the green ball singles of the semifinals were between Zachary Scott-Jones and Chloe Grieve and in the opposite
semi, Anthony Miller and Jack Kirby. Zachary accounted for Chloe in short time but it was a very close match between Anthony and Jack. Jack coming from a swimming background was competing in his first tennis tournament. Not having the same experience as Anthony took it right to the wire with all parents on the edge of their seats. The boys were pretty exhausted by this stage but hung in there to play long rallies and some very close line shots. With the score see-sawing finally Anthony got over the line with 7-6 (8-6) tiebreak score to meet Zachary in the final. Again this was a great match and a very tactical game, but Zachary had a bit more in the tank and took out the final 6-3. In the green ball doubles the match format was amended to catch up on time due to rain delays. Remi Grieve and Zachary were too strong for their round robin pool making into the final against Jack Kirby and Luke Jardine. Luke and Jack lacking in court awareness were competitive and will be very strong juniors in future events. Zachary and Remi were too strong and took the green ball doubles title 6-3. In the 12 singles Zachary had a great event making it through to the semis again, against Anthony Miller. This was
a very close game and could have gone either way ending in a tie break. Both boys put their body on the line diving for balls that most would not have even tried for. Sore and tired bodies at the end of the three days saw Zac just hang in there eventually winning the semi 7-6(7-5). In the opposite semi, Brendan O’Sullivan was too strong for Eytahnyia Scott-Jones moving into the final against Zachary. This match was postponed to later in the week. What all thought would be a win to Brendan, Zachary was in form and took it right to Brendan playing some great tennis. Brendan, two years older than Zach, kept his composure and just got a narrow win 7-6 (7-5). The 12&U doubles was also very close with a tie on points. Brendan and Jack teamed up together and were pipped at the post by Zachary and Anthony. With both team three wins and one loss in the round robin it was down to their match against each other. Again it was another tie break match but this time Zachary and Anthony got this one 7-6(7-4). In the 16&U singles, Jake Larsen, Harry Walker, Joseph Mayer and Brendan O’Sullivan made it through to the semi. Some great tennis from Harry but he
was no match for Jake. Harry allowing emotions get the better of him could not stay focused. Joseph and Brendan had a great match but Brendan was too strong going through to the final to play Jake Larsen. This was a good game with both boys playing some great forehands. Jake having a bigger serve took out the match 6-3. Jake Larsen and Joseph Mayer were too strong for their opponents in the 16 doubles going through the round robin un defeated. Finishing in second place was Eytahnyia Scott-Jones and Harry Walker. Continued Page 19 > >

Nicole Hovelroud during the tournament. But the orange ball level out did these stats with 26 competitors and 51 matches. In our red ball singles, seven competitors matched it out on the red-ball courts having some great rallies and, most of all, fun. Isaac Meersbergen had a great red ball event not dropping a match, winning his six matches and a score line of 126 points for and 55 against. Coming in at the runner-up position was Bridget Keehne, playing in her first tournament. Bridget won four and lost two matches and finished up with 104 points for and 91 against. In the red ball doubles Jacob Mery and Noah Blundell went through undefeated, but just got through with a very close win over Kassidy Willmott and Bronte Lane 21-20.
Jason Bower ready to serve.
Men’s social singles: Paul Augustin and Ben Jones.

Gove Closed Tennis Titles < < From Page 18. SENIORS The following weekend saw the seniors take to the court for their first tournament on the calendar. Again entries were good with 43 players competing. There was no rain around this weekend so matches flowed without interruption. Scotty Sims dusted off the cobwebs once again to contest the singles making it into the semis. Paul Augustin, playing in his first tournament, had great matches also making into the semi. Ben Jones had missed a few tournaments due to knee surgery but hadn’t lost any form also into the men’s singles semi. Making up the fourth player was Bintang Daly. Bintang worked hard against Ben pushing Ben to his limits. Ben having a stronger serve and ground strokes just got through with one service break moving into the final at 6-4. Paul and Scott also a very hard fought contest. Shot for shot was a great game to watch. Scott not having much left in the tank couldn’t hold on and lost out to Paul also 6-4. The show down was now on between Ben and Paul. A great game but Ben finally got through posting the win over Paul. In the women’s social singles Donna-Marie Grieve was missing from the line up with a shoulder injury so the title was open to anyone to take. Also a lot of newcomers to the club making it through to the finals. First in was Vanessa Stacy. Sarah Carlile did well also making it through to the semi along with Darcie Hockings and Eytahnyia Scott-Jones. The semis were one sided with Vanessa and Eytahnyia getting through to a final showdown. Eytahnyia may be overwhelmed by her older counterpart, was no match for Vanessa going down 2-6. The men’s open singles was going to be a great contest with all the Tuesday regulars entered. Seeded number 1, was Christo Esterjuyse in pool 1, and Derrian Rungun the second seed in the opposite pool. Both guys went through to the final but were struggling with soreness. It was a great final with some big blows up and down the court. Only playing one set to six Derrian got a service
break and took the final 6-4. The ladies social doubles was a great contest and saw some close matches. Playing in her first tournament Nicole Hovelroud seemed a little lost on the court (used to the netball court) but settled into her matches and was quick at the net. Catherine Jones teamed up with
Scott Sims in action.

daughter Eytahnyia but could not keep the ball in play and missed out on the top two. Also playing with her daughter was Michelle Hockings and daughter Darcie. Making up the other doubles teams was Sharon Mery and Maria Muldoon and Anna Harris and Jackie Willmott. There was lots of fun and laughter on the court, but it was Vanessa Stacy and Nicole Hovelroud getting a narrow win over Anna and Jackie in a tie break 7-6(7-1). In the men’s social doubles it was a one -sided affair with Brendan Muldoon and Scott Sims going through undefeated. Coming in in second place was father and son team Des and Brendan O’Sulllivan. Also giving it a go in their first tournament was Sean and Tony O’Connor. Enjoying themselves and giving it ago, the ball would not do what they wanted to do. It was a very tight men’s open doubles with three teams finishing equal on points. Going right down to the very last point, it was sheep stations on the line. Christo and Derrian had lost to Michael Mayer and Scott Sims, but Paul and Jason Bower had lost to Christo and Derrian taking it to a
count back to get a winner. The results finished with: Christo and Paul : sets 2-1, games 17-14 Paul and Jason ; sets 2-1, games 17-14 Michael and Scott ; sets 2-1, games 14-14 Stuart and Rob ; sets 0-3, games 9-18 The mixed doubles is always the fun events of any of the club’s tournaments. With entries down on previous tournaments in the social, it was Jackie Willmott and Brendan Muldoon taking the title marginally over Madeleine and Jake Larsen. In the Open doubles Murray Knyvett dusted the cobwebs off his racquet and dragged his body onto the court to go through undefeated with partner Nicky Mayer. Runner up went to Vanessa Stacy and Derrian Rungan. The club would like to thank all the players that entered and the volunteers that helped in the kitchen and with umpiring the junior matches. Don’t forget the BP Gove Classic is commencing soon, June 1-3 for the seniors and June 15-17 for the juniors.
