Venus dots across the sun
By MARJO HALLOWELL STARING into space is not always encouraged among school students but last Wednesday was an exception. The planet Venus passed across the front of the sun and locals were prepared to witness this rare event. The next time the planet will be visible passing between earth and the sun with be in 2117. Gove residents were blessed with clear skies allowing excellent sightings for the entire transit across the sun between 7.49 am to 2.49pm. Local astronomer Ian Maclean visited the Nhulunbuy Christian College and students from the Nhulunbuy High School armed with his telescopes and special glasses so students, parents and teachers could safely look at the sun. “It was a great day and I think well over 500 people got to view the transit,” Mr Maclean said. “I went to Hindle Oval with other Gove Astronomy Club members for the start of the transit and then went on to the NCC. “The NHS was holding their swimming carnival so we took the telescopes to the pool so the students wouldn’t miss out.” The visitors to the Walkabout Lodge also got the benefit of Mr Maclean’s expertise and the use of the telescopes and special glasses.’ Mr Maclean said many had purchased the special eclipse-shaded glasses which can also be used for the upcoming near-total eclipse of the sun in Nhulunbuy on November 14. He warned the eclipse shades must be used strictly in accordance with the printed instructions on them and under adult supervision. They must never be used with any other optical device ,such as telescopes, binoculars and cameras. On an international level a Tesltra worker severed a fiber-optic cable preventing scientists from streaming live footage to the NASA website from one of the world’s best- vantage points in the Northern Territory. The wire was damaged during roadworks about 10 miles south of Mataranka on Tuesday afternoon, cutting off internet and telephone services across the region and would not be repaired until after the end of the event. The Australian webcast was to have taken place from a school in Alice Springs - one of only two locations outside the United States that was contributing to the live NASA broadcast of the event. Other feeds were believed to have made up for the disaster.

The Walkabout were finalists in three categories including the Best Hotel Refurbishment and the Best Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Practices. Hotel manager Tony Weldon said he was very pleased with the win. “This is the third time we have won this Award,” he said. “Further, we were also awarded the title of Best Regional Hotel and this covers the entire Northern Territory outside of Darwin so it was a big field to beat. “This award is not one you nominate for but rather one bestowed on you by key players in the AHA and other hospitality industry stakeholders. “It is a very prestigious honour. This is the second consecutive year we have won this.” The awards are benchmarks for recognition within the hospitality industry.

Training network benefits employers THE East Arnhem Training Stakeholders Network is a group set up for networking opportunities with training providers in East Arnhem. The network was originally established in 2010 and meets on the third Wednesday of every month. It was set up to collaborate with and bring together groups requiring and providing training. Andrew Peers, from the Department of Business and Employment, said there were training opportunities in remote areas that many groups were not aware of. The network utilises the ability to coordinate and maximise resources. “We look at providing training by locals for locals,” Mr Peers said. “The network give organisations in the East Arnhem region information about what is available. It also allows training providers to find out what is required.” Mr Peers said there were many staffing turnovers within groups and organisations in the remote regions and, by maintaining the network, new employees could see what is here and what is available. Wendy Gordon, from the Charles Darwin University and a founder of the Network, said many training providers flew in to the monthly meeting from Darwin always

Local musicians hitting the right notes LOCAL musicians are among the 32 finalists in this year’s MusicNT’s Song Of The Year Awards. Alicia Scobie, Tim Webb, Kris Keogh and East Journey were named as finalists last week and the winners will be announced on Friday, June 15. Celebrating songwriting from across the Northern Territory, the NT Song Of The Year Awards recognises the extraordinary songwriters and songwriting emerging from the Territory. There are eight genres represented at the awards including rock, pop, folk, urban/ hip hop, blues and roots, dance and electronic, country, and heavy
as well as a people’s choice award category. Over 200 songs were submitted and 32 finalists have made it to the next stage of judging. Alicia Scobie and Tim Webb are finalists in the country category with their song Space To Fill. Kris Keogh is a finalist in the electronic/dance category with As You Held Your Hidden Hopes Up To the Stars and partnered with Gretchen Ennis in the folk category with their song Brightest Beginnings. In the pop category Rrawun Maymuru, Patrick White, Wulkuwulku Marawili, Susan Sandery Marawili and the band East Journey are finalists with Song of Arnhem. Alicia Scobie said she entered the
competition on the day it closed. “I only heard about it then so being a member of Music NT I thought ‘why not?’ and to my great surprise we are one of four finalists in the country section,” she said. “Tim wrote the chords and I wrote the lyrics, that’s usually how we collaborate. “We have some tough competition, the other muso’s being from Darwin and quite well known in the NT muso scene, so here’s hoping.” Winners from each category will be announced on Friday and each winner receives a cash prize of $500 and a pass to the iNTune music conference with the Overall Song Of The Year winner receiving a prize package worth over $4000.
ALMOST 100 Indigenous Territorians have earned their Learner’s Licence through an Australianfirst program delivering driver training and education in remote Northern Territory communities. DriveSafe NT Remote is a $3 million, two-year pilot program jointly funded by the Australian and Northern Territory Governments, National Road Safety Council and TIO. Senator Trish Crossin joined the Member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker in Yirrkala last week to meet with program participants. “A driver’s licence opens the door to better job, education and health opportunities,” Senator Crossin said. “This program is an important step to closing the gap on Indigenous disadvantage by creating access to economic opportuni-
ties and reducing the number of Indigenous Australians killed on our roads. “DriveSafe NT Remote will be rolled out across 14 Northern Territory Growth Towns over the next two years, providing at least 250 Indigenous Territorians in the bush with driver training and licensing as well as important road safety education.” One hundred and sixty-five people have enrolled in the program since it began in April in the first six communities - Yirrkala, Gunyangara, Angurugu, Umbakumba, Wadeye and Wurrumiyanga. All have passed the learner’s theory test and 98 participants have received a Learner’s Licence. “Sadly, almost half of those killed on Territory roads each year
are Indigenous, yet Indigenous Territorians make up only a third of our population,” Ms Walker said. “DriveSafe NT Remote is an Australian first tailoring the driver education and road safety program to meet the needs of the individual community and working in partnership with local organisations. “It’s helping break down the barriers to getting a licence, including supporting people to gain proof of identification, and access to appropriate driver training and education. “This approach ensures the community is directly connected to the program, providing ongoing, on-the-ground support for the participants.” Community-based learner driver mentors will be trained

Ms Yunupingu leaves us three things: Past, present and future By WILL STUBBS
WHEN the bulldozers came to knock down a sacred knowledge tree in Ski Beach, Arnhem Land, Munggurrawuy Yunupingu faced them with an axe. The young woman at his side, acting as his translator, was his daughter Ms Yunupingu. Construction on the Nabalco bauxite mine he had fought to stop desecrated large areas of rainforest on Munggurrawuy’s Gumatj land, but the tree was saved and is still standing. This was about 1971. Ms Yunupingu was working as a teacher’s aide at the time. She was one of a four-woman team that by 1985 had translated the Bible into Gumatj. In 2004, when she won first prize in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award after a relatively short career as an artist, she said it perhaps compensated for her previously unacknowledged Biblical labours. 24/7 Territory Wide When Ms Yunupingu died last month at her home in gove@barrieraviation.com Gunyungara (Ski Beach), she was surrounded by her family and serenaded by sacred songs of the whale. Ms Yunupingu, sister of Galarrwuy (former Northern Land Council chairman and Australian of the Year) and Mandawuy Yunupingu (lead singer of Yothu Yindi and former Australian of the Year)was born on Inglis Island, in the English Company Islands north of Yirrkala. A COLLABORATIVE collection of art work from private collections throughout Nhulunbuy will be on display this weekend. Private Collections is an art exhibition which has drawn on the numerous art collections from homes in the region and organisers are still looking for works by significant non-indigenous artists. The works on show will include pieces using a variety of mediums and has been organised by Wendy Troe. The opening of the exhibition will be on Friday night (June 16) at the Cell and tickets are limited and are available through Lynne Walker’s office.
The entry of $45 included a light supper. Background music will be provided by Jenny Heath and there will be a full bar service available. Ms Troe has been busy organising the works from individuals and businesses throughout the area and is pleased with the works she has uncovered. “We are still open to accepting works by significant non-indigenous artists,” she said. “The more diversity in the collection the better. “If the opening night sells out we will consider opening the exhibition for a short time on Sunday.”
Curator of the exhibition Will Stubbs said he was keen to see work that meant something to the owner. “We want works that mean something to someone,” he said. “This gives them the opportunity to show work to others and not just to close friend. “I know there are a lot more works out there. “An exhibition is like an orchestra and at the moment we have a million violins - we need a bit of a challenge and need to balance the exhibition.” For further information contact Ms Troe on 0457 785 050.

Licensed premises support Police campaign NHULUNBUY Police are conducting a road safety campaign for drink driving and the wearing of seat belts. The promotion started last Friday and runs until the promotional material runs out. Members from the Nhulunbuy Police Station hosted a barbecue at the Gove SLSC Surf Club last Friday night to simultaneously launch the campaign. Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said all the local licensed premises were supporting it. The Arnhem Club, the Walkabout Tavern, The Gove Country Golf Club and the Gove Boat Club all agreed to take part in the awareness campaign. Bar staff are encouraged to wear t-shirts and offer stubby and can holders to customers. Drink coasters, bar mats and posters also display relevant information. “It is an important message that we constantly try to get out to the public,” Snr Sgt Muldoon said. “If you drink - don’t drive. “The campaign is in line with our commitment to reduce the NT road toll which is the worst per capita in Australia. “About 70 per cent of all crime and anti-social behaviour in Nhulunbuy is alcohol related.”

represented and they came from Sydney, Bendigo, Darwin, Canberra and Broome. The university students discussed university life, the path they took to get there, the nature of studying in their chosen field and the things that sometimes get in the way of successful tertiary study. The session was informative, interactive and well received by those students who attended. The Rural High School Visits (RHSV) Program is co-ordinated by NT Health Workforce (NTHW), a unit of General Practice Network NT (GPNNT). Now in its 10th year, the program sees university students from around Australia visit NT high schools to promote opportunities for further education and health care career opportunities in a variety of disciplines. RHSV is under-pinned by research that indicates that students from a rural background are more likely to return to a rural setting to practice after graduating. As well as visiting Nhulunbuy the students also visited Darwin, Palmerston, Humpty Doo, Katherine, Alice Springs, Hermannsburg and Tennant Creek.
Chambers struck down by illness GOVE-BORN, Melbourne Storm rugby league star Will Chambers (pictured) faces an uncertain playing future following the diagnosis of a rare blood-clotting disease. The Storm centre was diagnosed with the rare blood clotting disorder ITP (Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia) last week. Chambers, 24, spent 48 hours in hospital after seeing the club’s doctor on Monday of last week, with symptoms and was sent to hospital to receive treatment and undergo further tests, the Melbourne Storm website reports. Specialist doctors have cleared Chambers of any other significant health concerns. The Melbourne media report his mother has flown from Gove to be with her son. At this stage he will be sidelined from football indefinitely as he recovers. “Will is undergoing treatment via medication to resolve the clotting and will be monitored for a safe return to football. “At this stage the time frame for recovery is unknown.” Melbourne Storm GM Football Operations Frank Ponissi said the health and well-being of Will was of paramount concern to the club. “The club’s focus is for Will’s welfare and health and we will continue to offer support to Will and his family,” Ponissi said. “It has been a difficult and very worrying past few days for Will, however he is very positive about his recovery.” He has scored 10 tries for the Storm after returning this season from a stint with the Queensland Reds rugby union side.

Pauls Smarter milk DES survey closes this week one-litre is recalled PEOPLE in the Northern Territory are being advised not to drink Pauls Smarter White Milk one litre bottles with a use by date of June 20, following the detection of listeria. “The listeria bacteria can cause illness especially in pregnant women, children under five years, people over 70 years and people with weakened immune systems,” Chief Health Officer Dr Barbara Paterson said. “For healthy people there may be no symptoms, however symptoms may include fever, headache, tiredness, aches and pains, diarrhoea or nausea. “Please do not consume this product. If you feel you may have been affected by this product please see your doctor.” Work is now underway by Pauls to locate and destroy 400 units of the product which were distributed in the Northern Territory through Coles, Woolworths, BP service stations and smaller independent outlets. No other product has been affected. Anyone who has purchased the recalled product should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
THE recent campaign for DES (diethylstilboestrol) awareness week, June 1-7, raised awareness of the anti-miscarriage drug, DES, given to women during pregnancy from 1938 to 1971 (and sometimes beyond). Women given DES and their children of that pregnancy are at higher risk of certain types of cancer and reproductive problems. There are about 740,000 DES exposed Australians yet many are unaware of the fact and the potential adverse health effects.
Beware of unregistered tax agents TAXPAYERS have been warned about using unregistered tax agents after a Queensland woman was ordered to pay a penalty of $30,000 by the Federal Court of Australia. The Tax Practitioners’ Board took her to Court for providing a tax agent service for a fee while not being registered as a tax agent with the Board. Board Chair Dale Boucher said: “The Court’s orders should send a clear signal to other people not to prepare tax returns for a fee unless they are registered with the Tax
WITH the onset of major projects in the Territory, led by the $34billion Icthys gas project, the Territory was hailed last week as the second-fastest growing economy in Australia, only narrowly behind resource-rich Western Australia which lost its bid for Icthys when former Territory Chief Minister Clare Martin stepped in four years ago and wooed developers. While the bigger picture for growth and an economy set to boom is an extremely positive story for the Territory, I remain very mindful of the challenges we face at a regional level. Rio Tinto’s decision to divest the Gove operations has understandably impacted on business confidence, but I know an enormous body of work is afoot with Pacific Aluminium looking to its own business backyard for increased efficiencies as well as working with the NT Government to secure a gas supply to Gove to reduce power generation costs. As Darwin positions itself to become the gas
hub capital of Australia, I remain optimistic that a gas supply can be sourced. In recent weeks I have attended three meetings in Nhulunbuy with the executive of the East Arnhem Chamber of Commerce and members of the region’s economic development committee with two Territory Ministers and Federal Minister Warren Snowdon to listen to business concerns and work through the issues. LAST week I attended a Ministerial Council meeting in Darwin with Employment and Training Ministers from around Australia. The meeting was preceded by a very valuable industry forum chaired by Skills Australia which focussed on the demand for skills in regions and rural areas Australia-wide. The Territory alone, with a population of 220,000 people, predicts that over the next five years an additional 20,000 skilled and semi-skilled workers will be needed to meet growth which is why

Hep. C threat from DIY tattoos warning
HEALTH workers say a growing number of young people in the Northern Territory are contracting hepatitis C from do-it-yourself tattoo and body piercing kits. The kits are readily available for purchase at online stores for as little as $15. The Northern Territory Aids and Hepatitis Council said people who use the kits risk contracting hepatitis or HIV.

New subdivision opens in Galuwinku A NEW subdivision in Galiwin’ku was officially opened last Wednesday. Public and Affordable Housing Minister Chris Burns officially opened a new subdivision - Buthan. A total of 90 new houses, including 25 houses in the existing community and 65 new houses in the subdivision, have been constructed in Galiwinku as part of the $1.7 billion Australian and Territory Government National Partnership Agreement for Remote Indigenous Housing, which includes the Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure program (SIHIP). Dr Burns said the subdivision was named after a football oval which was in the area in the 1980s in legacy of the Gunbirrtji clan who are the Traditional Owners of the area, but no longer have any direct decedents. “These vital housing works will ensure more families are living in safe, healthy and secure housing in Galiwin’ku,” Dr Burns said.
“Importantly there is room to grow in Buthan which is an 89 lot subdivision that includes 28 fully serviced vacant lots for future construction and design for a further 36 lot development.” Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs Jenny Macklin said living conditions are improving for residents of Galiwinku. “This is the largest housing program to be jointly undertaken by the Northern Territory and Australian Governments, delivering 934 new houses, 415 rebuilds of existing houses and 2500 refurbishments across the Territory by June 2013. “As at the end of April, 2012, more than 630 new dwellings have been completed with a further 49 underway, and 2140 rebuilds and refurbishments with another 53 underway.” Minister for Indigenous Health Warren Snowdon said the works included infrastructure upgrades in the
township, as well as new infrastructure at Buthan. “In Buthan, infrastructure works included bitumen roads, curbing with surface drainage, above ground electricity and street lighting and town water and sewerage services. “Galiwinku headworks included equipping additional bores, upgrading water storage, including an elevated tank, installation of a new sewer pump station, linking pedestrian access to the new subdivision, and linking the water rising main to new subdivision. Dr Burns said gardens are springing up around Buthan and there is a real sense of community. “As well as providing safe, secure and clean housing, the program has been instrumental in providing employment and training opportunities for locals and they should all be very proud of the part they have played in the creation of this new subdivision,” Dr Burns said.
Remote painting team equals urban counterparts THE Indigenous Painting Team (IPT) working for Territory Alliance is led by local painter and mentor Gary Baker. IPT employs 10 local residents including four apprentices and six employees undertaking their building construction certificates. Gary Baker has lived and worked in remote Arnhem communities for 15 years. “This project has given Indigenous and non-indigenous people the opportunity to work shoulder to shoulder together,” Mr Baker said. “It’s given local residents the op-
portunity to acquire a trade and shown them what it takes. They now know how tough it is to build a house. “I tell the guys - it’s a ‘real job, real pay and real effort’. “I’m really proud of their achievements, they are quality workers and I would rate them against any other painter with their same qualifications in Australia. “I have managed painting teams in urban parts of Australia and these blokes would match their skills any day. “There’s a five year plan for us to
continue work in other communities in North East Arnhem land where these men have connection with family and blood. “We have been discussing future work prospects with New Future Alliance for work in nearby communities including Milingimbi and Ramingining. “The new and improved homes in Galiwinku have instilled a sense of pride and a dream that it might go on. “I always say to my team ‘don’t forget the big dream we’re all working for’.”

THE Wilderness Society say the Northern Territory Government’s three-year moratorium on seabed mining in NT waters is great news for marine conservation. The Society says: “In recent years, inter-state miners had begun targeting the Territory’s seabed for manganese, a mineral essential in steel manufacture. “The most-advanced proposal targeted the waters surrounding Groote

Eylandt, a region which Anindilyakwa Traditional Owners believe contains significant reincarnation sites. “The Traditional Owners are deeply opposed to any activity that threatens the cultural and environmental integrity of their sea country. “Seabed mining involves open-cut strip mining of the sea floor. It has no real precedent in Australia, but is an emerging threat throughout the Pacific.”
A REPORT has found just under three million, or 17.2% of Australians, are now either fully or severely financially excluded from affordable and appropriate financial services. The study discovered 43 per cent of Australia’s Indigenous population do not have basic financial services, such as bank accounts. Indigenous Australians, young adult Australians, and those living in low-income outer suburban and regional areas are cited as some of the most-vulnerable to financial exclusion. Those include 43.1% of Aboriginal or
The Society said Northern Manganese Ltd, which holds exploration rights for eight tenements covering 1723 sq km of shallow areas and two islands around Groote Eylandt, also welcomed the moratorium. It says Company chairman Doug Daws acknowledged the offshore area of the Northern Territory was “pretty sensitive” and recognised that the moratorium allows decisions to be made with the clarity and transparency
Torres Strait Islanders (ATSI) are considered financially excluded, while 49.2% of 18-24 year olds are now considered financially excluded. Funded by NAB and conducted by University of NSW Centre for Social Impact, the study measures exclusion based on lack of access to appropriate and affordable financial services and products - the key services and products being a transaction account, general insurance and a moderate amount of credit. CSI Lead Researcher and Author Chris Connolly says this year’s study gives an even-greater insight into the extent of financial exclusion in Australia.
of proper scientific understanding. “Notably he stated: ‘To be perfectly blunt, if you dig a hole in the seabed, that area is destroyed, but we are not talking about very big areas.’ “The proposed sea-bed mining sparked a broad range of community opposition in the NT. Following an effective campaign by Aboriginal Land Councils, recreational fishers and environment groups, including the Wilderness Society, the
Factors leading to financial exclusion: Cost: The cost of motor vehicle and home insurance has increased at a rate higher than inflation, bringing the average premium up to $898 (compared to $855 last year). When combined with the annual cost of a credit card ($808 average) and basic bank account ($88), this represents 15% of the income for 12.7% of the country’s population. Demographics: Indigenous Australians, young adult Australians, and those living in low-income outer suburban and regional areas are cited as some of the most vulnerable to financial exclusion. 43.1% of Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islanders (ATSI) are
NT government announced a three year ban on all seabed exploration and mining activities in NT coastal waters. Note this does not include petroleum exploration and production or port development. “With this threat on the back burner, the Wilderness Society is now keen to see large marine sanctuaries to protect the seabed and its wildlife more permanently,” the Society said.
considered financially excluded. 49.2% of 18-24 year olds are now considered financially excluded. Language and documents: Communication difficulties and a lack of appropriate identification documentation were also cited as key barriers to credit. Most study respondents seeking credit did so to cover basic household necessities, such as food, rent and utility bills. NAB Group CEO Cameron Clyne says the increasing number of Australians excluded from affordable and appropriate financial services is alarming and unacceptable

SPORT CLUB manager and regional development officer of Tennis Gove Nicky Mayer has been delivering tennis in remote communities including the Laynhapuy Homelands. Working in partnership with the youth leadership program run at Laynhapuy, Mrs Mayer has taken tennis to Dhalingbuy, Garthalala, Gangan, Wandawuy, Yilpara and Barkirra, Gapuwiyak, and Groote Eylandt. The focus of the program is to establish a relationship with the youth leaders, sport and recreation officers, and the community. “We are trying to deliver the program through educating those that live in the community to run tennis, so that there is some kind of sustainability, said Mrs Mayer. “I then follow up with further visits to see how they are going and provide more up-skilling to them. The communities over time are encouraged to have ownership of the delivery of the program. So far Mrs Mayer has provided each of the communities she has visited with modified equipment that includes mini nets, junior racquets, and low-compression balls. “It is so much fun getting out to the remote areas. In particular I enjoy the Homeland regions as the kids just love having the chance to do something different. “They are just really welcoming, and they just love it. “We recently ran a course out at Dhalingbuy in March. It was the first time that we had done something like this, but we brought in senior students and youth leaders from Garthalala, Gangan, and Wandawuy into Dhalingbuy. “We all camped for the weekend and conducted a very lengthy course that included lesson progressions and teaching the kids. “Support for the program has also come from Kevin Bird from Miwatj. Kevin has integrated nutrition into the program and this has developed into a really great team working together, and the best part is that it is the communities that benefit. “We are in the process of visiting the above communities in the coming months and looking into introducing more homeland communities by the end of the year. “Thanks must go to Diana and Peter at Laynha for doing the logistics and organising the communities. Power and Water and Sport & Rec for sponsoring the RDO program, and Kevin from Miwatj for his support.

TO thank the individuals and organisations who support the Yirrkala Clontarf Academy, a golf day was held recently with 40 players taking to the course. The supporters got to play a round of golf with the students who range from years five to 12. The Foundation caters for 2600 boys across 47 schools in four states. In the NT there are 16 academies catering for 1055 students. The Foundation recognises that participation in 12 years of education has a major impact on the life outcomes of any person, including improved health, employment options and emotional well being. Robert Clements, from the Yirrkala Academy, said they were developing leaders by giving them life skills . This year there are 37 students at Yirrkala and their average attendance rate is 67 per cent. They had participated in two camps so far this year and they had introduced a ‘tucker trooper’ which has seen the boys deliver 220 meals to members of the Yirrkala community. He thanked the Buku-Larrnggay Mulka art centre at Yirrkala, for donating the framed print which was awarded to Lynne Walker for the straightest drive, the Water Front Kitchen for donating meal vouchers which were awarded to Kelly Nottle for the longest drive and Bianca Barling for the shortest drive. East Arnhem Butchers donated a meat tray which was awarded to Bilapinya Mununggurr for closest to the pin kicking competition and Qantas donated golf umbrellas. A special thanks was also extended to Al Fanning from the Gove Country Golf Club for his assistance throughout the day. Other awards went to Djawa Burrawanga for the best golf style, Rupu Maymuru for most potential and Marradakthun Marika for closest to pin. Mr Clements thanked Dhimurru Corporation, Sodexo, Pacific Aluminium, DET, Miwatj, East Arnhem Shire Council, local Police, the local fire station, Lirriwi Tourism, Lynne Walker, Anglicare and Forwaard Aboriginal Corporation for their ongoing support of Clontarf.
Bukutkpi Wanambi, Ace Rabukawaqa from Nhulunbuy Corporation and Marayala Yunupingi teamed up on the day.

Local players do well at Under 12 NT titles THE School Sport NT Under 12 Championships for rugby league took place in Palmerston recently and a team of students from the local schools represented Arnhem, with Nhulunbuy High School, Nhulunbuy Primary School and the Nhulunbuy Christian College all participating. The tournament was played at a new complex in Palmerston that provided perfect playing conditions for the boys. Teams from all over the Northern Territory participated and the boys represented Arnhem with distinction finishing joint second in the tournament. School sport co-ordinator for the Arnhem Region Ian Darlington said all the boys gave 100 per cent effort and were a credit to themselves, their schools
and the community. “Vic Epiha did a great job as coach and emphasised not only playing to the best of your ability but also the importance of team work, being enthusiastic and making every effort to improve yourself as a player,” he said. “All the boys played well and at the end of the tournament Tom McGrath, Caleb Epiha and Mali Martin, all of Nhulunbuy High were chosen in the NT squad. “After extra training sessions Tom and Caleb were chosen in the final team to compete in the Australian championships in Mackay and Mali was chosen as a reserve for that team.” The soccer U12 championships are being held in Nhulunbuy this week.

Junior golfers guided by a pro Article and photos by ESTHER RIKA DURING the weekend of May 26 and 27, Gove Country Golf Club junior members participated in a junior golf clinic. It was hosted by PGA professional Graham Sheppard from the Capricorn Resort Golf Club in Yeppoon, Queensland. On Saturday, despite the wet and windy conditions nine juniors were invited to attend one on one coaching lessons with the pro. The rain did not deter their spirits and the Club bar was transformed into a space where juniors worked on their short game and putted balls into cups. Sunday’s session was open for all juniors and another 18 turned up for a great day of golf. “I was very impressed with
what junior golf has achieved here in Gove despite not having any Pros. The juniors were enthusiastic, well behaved and displayed positive attitudes towards golf”, said Mr Sheppard. The youngest player, aged four, was Brianna Mery and young Darcy Colquhoun stood out in the crowd, wearing his Loudmouth disco ball golf pants, in admiration of his coach Al Fanning. After lunch Mr Sheppard presented all juniors with a Capricorn Resort Golf cap and golf ball. This event could not have taken place if it were not for our sponsors, LJ Hooker and Pacific Alumina. Greg Taylor from LJ Hooker provided his support and once again enjoyed spending time with Gove’s junior golfers. Future clinics will take place
The rain didn’t stop the clinic later on in the year and PGA as youngsters practised member Graham Sheppard is their putting. looking forward to coming back to continue providing mentorship for the juniors. This event will also include a visit by the legendary golf coach, Charlie Earp, who is looking forward to meeting and working with our junior club members. Junior golf sessions are on every Sunday, 10 am at the Golf Club, during the school calendar timetable.
