Classic Weipa fishing Scott McCahon knew he’d landed a winner when he hooked this 7.325kg Blue Salmon on Sunday morning. The catch secured him first place in the Salmon category at this year’s Weipa Fishing Classic. Photo: Fiona Langsdorf.
Darren Lee was the winner of the inaugural Billfish category (catch and release) in this year’s Weipa Fishing Classic.
THE Weipa Fishing Classic has come and gone for another year and it has been described by many as a “ripper of a weekend”. The weather gods were indeed kind to the hundreds of fishers who took to the water in boats or wet a line from the beaches and jetties over the long weekend. An abundance of fish were weighed-in at the Western Cape College grounds on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons and huge crowds gathered for three nights of entertainment. Scott and Dan from Creek to Coast, along with MC Peter McCulkin, kept the audience captivated throughout the weekend with non-stop action and fishing yarns. There were lure casting and cast net throwing competitions and the tug-o-war battle attracted many vocal spectators. WCC students and Weipa Gym Club members entertained the crowds and toes were tapping late into the evening with live music provided by Rising Tide, Shandell Tosoni and Ryan Giles. Weipa Fishing Classic treasurer, Jay Murray, said the weekend was a success on many levels. “We had huge crowds at the WCC grounds on all three nights of the Classic and there were plenty of fish at the weigh-ins,” Jay said. “The committee would like to thank everyone who participated in this year’s Classic, and in particular the Creek to Coast crew for assisting us to present our event to the Weipa community and showcase Weipa to the rest of Australia.” The Creek to Coast Weipa Fishing Classic episode will air in September this year. Family pet taken by croc at Trunding Creek By Giembra Busmer
WHEN Adam Crossley and his 13-year old daughter, Tara, took their two purebred Staffies for a walk on the beach on the western side of Trunding Creek last Wednesday they had no idea the stroll would end in tragedy. As Adam and Tara approached Trunding Creek at 6.15pm their dogs, four-year old Polly and 14-month old Coco, raced ahead, stopping on the banks of the creek. Within seconds a large crocodile exploded out of the water, grabbed Coco from the bank and swam upstream with her. “It was the speed of the attack that was so frightening,” Tara said. “It was just so fast. One second Coco was standing there, and the next she was gone.” “We normally take the dogs to the Lakes in the afternoons, but that day it was getting late and the sun would have set by the time we got there, so we decided to go to the beach instead.” UU continued page 4

the Albatross Bay Resort, but nothing on the western side,” Adam said. “Tourists in particular walk up the beach on that side of the creek and they have no idea of the potential danger. “The afternoon Coco was taken there were probably 20 people on the beach, all of them close to the water’s edge, and when we told them what had happened they were shocked and asked us why there were no signs to warn them.” Tara also voiced her concern for small children playing at the edge of the water. “Tourists will eventually go exploring while they are staying in town, but they need to be made aware of crocodiles. If Coco could be taken so quickly it could easily happen to a child. “Maybe Coco’s death can help to save the life of a child. I hope so ‘cause she was a beautiful pup.”
Adam said he often walked the dogs on the beach but never took them down to the creek. “We always stop before the creek but this day the dogs just took off and wouldn’t come back.” Tara believes Coco’s death should serve as a warning to others “Nobody should be taking their dogs anywhere near Trunding Creek, and if they do they should be kept on a lead,” she said. “There are better places to walk your dogs, like the Lakes.” Although a temporary “recent crocodile sighting” sign was erected on the western bank of Trunding Creek following the attack, both Tara and Adam believe better, permanent signage needs to be installed. “There is a crocodile warning sign on the other side of the creek, behind

o Cyclone OH dear, us up north are just about to be dragged into a stand-up fight between Brisbane, Canberra and a lot of strange outsiders. The battle lines are being drawn, eager troops are forming up and the heavy artillery is being trundled out of storage and carefully aimed at the opposition. The root of the trouble lies in the fact that we live in a Very Nice Place. In the whole
of Australia, only around 2.5per cent live in places like ours and that includes all those strange people busy digging holes in Western Australia. There’s hardly any of us and the north eastern part of Australia is the place we live, a place where we are free to be as cranky as we like and no-one will care. Unfortunately, while the rest of Australia might not love us, they do love our countryside

even if they only see it from the end of a TV remote. That makes us fair game for the southern pollies. They can use us like gambling chips on the blackjack table of State and Federal politics. The first shots in the impending conflict came for Oberführer Campbell Newman. He threw a challenge onto Canberra’s table: he is going to develop a coal mine in Queensland, and he doesn’t give a monkey’s what any outsider thinks about it. Our Julia is not going to stand for that, and lambasted the Oberführer for a shoddy environmental assessment. She also had a swipe at the Oberführer’s mates - the mining companies. Gina Rinehart and Clive Palmer, two zillionaire mining magnates, are under direct attack. They have appeared on
newspaper front pages looking rather like Tweedledum and Tweedledee caught pinching cookies. They had better run for cover now, before Julia really gets on their case. Overshadowing everything else is UNESCO and its World Heritage assessment process. Any day now, we could find ourselves magically teleported from being ordinary folks living in a pretty place, to joining the cane toads, wild pigs and other ferals damaging a pristine UNESCO World Heritage site by just being here. Will anyone stand up for us? Well... that depends on how much our pollies need the Green vote down south. Or Tweedledum and Tweedledee’s donations. Whichever way the battle goes, I don’t suppose our opinions will count for much.

Excellence award for Western Cape College WESTERN Cape College was honoured during State Education Week to receive a Regional Showcase Award for Excellence in Leadership for the Leadership Lounge initiative. The Western Cape College Leadership Lounge was originally established in 2006 to assist aspiring leaders to obtain classified positions but the program has evolved to recognize all members of staff as educational leaders within our school community, and has grown to include leadership development opportunities for the variety of leadership roles and types (classified and nonclassified) within our context. The program consists of three ‘stages’, with all participants beginning the leadership development journey in Stage 1. The stages progress from a focus on Personal Leadership, to School- Based Leadership, through to Systemic Leadership. One of the unique aspects of this initiative is the dual leadership opportunity that is
available to participants. As well as developing leadership skills through participation in the program, members have the opportunity to become ‘Stage Facilitators’ for the subsequent stage of the program. This approach ensures the sustainability of the program, and utilises contextually-relevant staff expertise. Guest speakers are also regularly invited, to ensure participants are exposed to a range of leadership styles, principles and frameworks. Each stage of participants develops a Team Charter, which articulates what the group would like to achieve from the program. This ensures that the integrity and rigour of the program is protected, and prevents it from becoming a ‘one-size-fits-all’ model. It also ensures that program content is relevant, and responsive to the needs of all types of educational leaders. The next step is to nominate for the State Showcase for Excellence Awards in Leadership. The winners will be announced at the end of July.

THE future is looking brighter for 11 women from Hope Vale and Kowanyama who recently spent a successful week learning about employment and educational opportunities at Tropical North Queensland TAFE (TNQT). The women are part of Tania Major Consulting’s Cape York Super Sisters, a group of 108 women aged from 14 to 60 from Hope Vale, Kowanyama, Lockhart River and Pormpuraaw communities brought together to re-engage in education, employment and training. The program is funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Education, Employment and Work Place Relations. “The Cape York Super Sisters are a passionate group of women who want to achieve real change in their communities,” Ms Major said. “During their five-day retreat in Cairns, the Cape York Super Sisters explored training opportunities available to them and visited a variety of businesses to experience life in the wider commercial world. “These women have dreams and the retreat has given them the confidence to know that with the right training, setting up and operating their own small businesses in their own communities is achievable.” TNQT Faculty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Manager Leanne Bell said their time at TNQT gave the Cape York Super Sisters the opportunity to sit down in front of a computer and profile what they wanted to achieve. “Some of the women had very little exposure to computers and welcomed the opportunity to learn and see where taking a business course could take them,” Ms Bell said. “The women especially enjoyed meeting past students who have gone on to further business studies and are on the road to achieving their dreams.” More Cape York Super Sister TAFE and Employment Retreats are planned. Tania Major was the Queensland Young Australian of the Year (2006) and Young Australian of the Year (2007).

Airport upgrade progressing well CONSTRUCTION of the new, air-conditioned departure lounge at Weipa Airport, which includes the installation of state-of-the-art security screening equipment, is progressing well, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa general manager operations Jo-Anne Scarini said this week. “The interior of the old Air Services building has been fully refurbished to cater for its new purpose and we expect to start installing the new security equipment next week,” Ms Scarini said. “Departing passengers will now go through a walk-through metal detector and an explosive trace detection machine before boarding their aircraft. Hand-held scanners will also be in place.” Ms Scarini said the additional security measures will bring Weipa Airport into line with other metropolitan and major Queensland regional airports. “Rio Tinto Alcan is committed to the safe, secure and reliable operation of Weipa Airport for the community, visitors to the region and the many employees who use the service every day,” she said.
Ms Scarini said national airport management company Aerodrome Management Services will manage the new security screening services at the Weipa Airport. “Aerodrome Management have started recruiting local staff and will soon begin training them on the equipment,” Ms Scarini said. “This new check-in process is an important step forward, but it is also a big change for our airport. “Passengers will need to ensure they allow sufficient time prior to the flights departure to be checked in.” Qantaslink currently operates 34 flights through Weipa Airport every week. As part of the airport upgrade, from July 1, 2012 Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa will introduce an operating levy for all operators of flights in and out of Weipa of $30 per adult and $15 per child. The levy will go toward the ongoing maintenance and operation of the new airport facilities. Ms Scarini said similar levies have been adopted at other regional Queensland airports such as Roma and Bundaberg.
Security upgrades to the Weipa Airport are progressing well and are on track to be completed by July 1, 2012.
While the operating levy will contribute to the continued maintenance and operation of the new facilities, Rio Tinto Alcan would continue to meet the large bulk of the costs of running the airport. Ms Scarini said the security upgrade will ensure Weipa Airport continues to meet new State government security requirements requiring the screening of all pas-
senger luggage, which become effective from July 1, 2012. The new departure lounge is the latest in a series of major upgrade works at the airport over the past 12 months, with the runway reseal and lighting upgrade completed last year. Plans are also under way to upgrade the airport car park, including installation of lighting, within
the next 12 months. “These projects were being delivered as part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining town services,” Ms Scarini said. For more information about the Weipa Airport security upgrade, please contact Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s community feedback hotline 1800 707 633.

Dancers Brayden Mudu, Dan Sagigi, Preston Babia, Asuelu Aniba and Francis Elu with mentors Vincent Babia, Brett Aniba and Charles Aniba.
AS travellers with dusty cars and feet begin to fill up the campgrounds of Cape York, some other dusty feet are getting ready to stomp up a storm. The spitting image of Saibai Island warriors, from their Dhoeri’s (head dresses) to their zazi’s (grass skirts) and painted skin, the Zugubaw Thithuyil Dance Group are ready to take on the night and will being regular performances in June. “They look deadly in their costumes, said mentor Vincent Babia, “the costumes they wear are the same as the traditional warriors from Saibai. “We’ve been donated an area on the boundary of the Seisia Campgrounds, said mentor Charles Aniba, “so we have set up an area where we can have huts and in the center our dancers can perform. The dances depict stories from their ancestor’s lives on Saibai Island as well as the journey to the mainland, a unique insight to the history of the Northern Peninsula Area. The dance pad will
be skirted by traditional huts showing locals preparing spears and weaving, to complete the cultural experience. “It’s a great way to raise funding for the dance troupe, and I hope that this encourages our other dance groups also, said NPARC Director of Community Services Russell Symons. “We will begin with a few shows at the Seisia Fishing Club, said mentor Vincent Babia, “then when we have the dance area fully ready we will move to the camp grounds. “The performances will raise funds for the group to travel to events outside of the NPA and to maintain the area and costumes. “We use a lot of props to tell our stories; boats, bows and arrows, drums and spears. We have adapted the old dances and put our own modern spin on them, it’s a great performance. Although the group has only been dancing together for just over a year, once they are in costume and begin to dance you would believe they are incarnates of the stories themselves.
The Zugubaw Thithuyil Dancers are performing regularly at the Seisia campgrounds from June.

MEN’S HEALTH WEEK:
Swap it – for your own good TWO-THIRDS of the nation’s men are overweight or obese, only five per cent are eating the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables and more than half have had a mental health condition in their lifetime. During Men’s Health Week, June 11 to 17, Queensland’s peak diabetes, cancer, heart and nutrition organisations, as part of the Swap It, Don’t Stop It campaign, are urging the average Aussie male to prioritise his health – for his own good. While two-thirds of Australian blokes participate in sport and physical activity, only 40 per cent discuss healthy lifestyle issues with a professional, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare – who say men could be doing more to protect and improve their health. Ambassador for the Swap It, Don’t Stop It campaign, Olympian Duncan Armstrong, says men are lagging behind in taking care of themselves – prioritising
career and family before their personal needs. “Often the last thing you think about is your health until you get a jolt, and end up in hospital – or something goes chronically wrong,” Duncan said. “We need role models to help men take care of themselves more consistently to avoid longterm health problems. Small changes like swapping fast food for fresh, an all-meat meal for a smaller serve of meat and extra vegies and swapping TV-time for treadmill-time are great ways men can start prioritising their health.” “My aim is to get more blokes to visit their GPs a little more regularly – for their own benefit.” A waist measurement over 94cm for men puts them at risk of a range of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, some cancers and heart disease. With cancer the leading cause of death in Australian men, Cancer Council Queensland
spokesperson Louise Baldwin is calling on all blokes to get into gear and visit their GP during Men’s Health Week. “Tragically, one in two Queensland men will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85 – it could be you, your best mate or a family member,” Ms Baldwin said. “The good news is, there’s plenty you and your mates can do to tackle cancer. At least one-third of all cancers are preventable with simple lifestyle changes, including eating healthily, moving more and maintaining a healthy weight.” Men can work toward losing their belly without losing out on the things they love, by committing to small swaps daily. A full list of swaps, plus a 12-week Swap It planner is available at www.swapit.gov.au. Diabetes Queensland, the Heart Foundation, Cancer Council Queensland and Nutrition Australia Qld collaboratively support the national Swap It, Don’t Stop It campaign.
Help ACT for Kids THE latest report on child protection from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare states that 31,527 children were abused or neglected in 2010-11; that’s one Australian child every 17 minutes suffering physical, sexual, emotional abuse or neglect. It’s a number so big it’s hard to fathom, break it down to 5,941 kids in Queensland. And those are only the reported, investigated and confirmed cases. The causes and definitions of child abuse are studied and debated, but the outcomes are clear. ACT for Kids Executive Director of Programs, Research and Education, Dr Katrina Lines, said it can lead to life-long impairments to children’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional development. “Children who have experienced trauma from abuse and neglect can be left with life-long psychological problems and various developmental delays. “But it’s overwhelmingly the case that prompt professional intervention and support can result in a positive outcome for children and young people; with the right help they can
overcome their experiences,” Dr Lines said. Dr Lines also urges individual and community action to support struggling families and report concerns about children’s safety to authorities. “It only takes one person to act to change the future for a child. Get to know your neighbours, offer support, if you have concerns about a child or family talk to Child Safety Services. You could be the person who makes a difference to a child’s life.” ACT for Kids, a charity providing free therapy and services to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect across Queensland for almost 25 years, has launched their annual tax appeal calling for donations to support their ongoing work. “There are so many vulnerable children and families that need help, and that little bit of extra support is often enough to prevent child abuse and neglect occurring in the first place. But we need to raise funds to enable us to reach out to more kids and families,” Dr Lines said. To support the ACT for Kids Tax Appeal and children they help, donate today at actforkids.com.au/taxappeal or call 1300 228 000.

Make it a habit
Queensland Depots: Humbug Wharf, Weipa 24 Tingara Street, Portsmith
HOW do you achieve long term results and reach your goals? Make exercise and good nutrition a habit! It takes 30 days to create a habit. After a month your habits will take over and push you into your regime rather than you having to motivate yourself to get out of bed and get moving. It is already mid-year and if you are not close yet to reaching the goals you’ve set yourself on New Year’s Eve, NOW and TODAY is the right time to change your habits. Here are 10 tips to help you on your way: 1. Set compelling goals Confidence and self belief brings results. Setting yourself fitness goals each week will help you gain confidence as you achieve them. Aim for a 30 minute brisk walk every day, if you can, add two resistance training sessions each week. The most important thing is to get moving. 2. Plan Write your exercise time down as an appointment in your diary, Outlook calendar or put it into your mobile phone. Make it a rule that you can’t cancel that appointment, your health is too important Record your training plan in your diary, it will keep you motivated and help you to stay on track. 3. Read your goals and training plan regularly Keep them in a place that is easy to see to remind yourself of what it is you intend to achieve. 4. Give your pantry and fridge an overhaul Good nutrition is one of the most important parts of better health, so stock your pantry with nutritious and healthy food to ensure that you eat well throughout the day. Plan your meals in advance, and when you are at work or away from home take your food with you if you can.

It is important that you: • Eat three to five small meals a day; • Reduce your fat intake – cut out junk food, biscuits, cakes, butter; • Increase your intake of fibrous fruit and vegies, and drink lots of water. 5. Exercise first thing in the morning After a tough day at work, exercising is often the last thing you feel like doing. Exercise first thing in the morning, you will feel energised for the day and never feel guilty for missing out. 6. Surround yourself with others who have good exercise habits already You will be lifted by their energy and enthusiasm. 7. Get the family involved Jump up from the couch and take your kids to the park. Remember the fun you had as a kid playing simple games like “statues”, “tag” and “stuck in the mud”? Why not sign-up your family for a local fitness event and share in the excitement of competing together? 8. Clean out your wardrobe Don’t hold onto a bunch of clothes you are keeping ‘just in case’ you need these bigger sizes again. Streamline your wardrobe, and keep the essential items. Set a goal to replace one out-of-date or oversized clothing item when your body shape starts changing. 9. Have fun Where’s your childlike spirit? Remember ‘playlunch’ and ‘playtime’? Make your workouts, ‘playtime’ and you’ve got it made – it’s all in your attitude. Don’t give up on yourself. It is never too late to be the healthy person you might have been, and deserve to be now. 10. Just show up Keep your exercise commitments - whether it’s a run at the park with a friend, a session with your personal trainer or a group exercise session. Once you’re there, it’s hard to say no. Ninety eight per cent of life is showing up.
WHEN the teacher of the Law asked Jesus which was the greatest commandment of all, the Lord said that we must love God with all our hearts and our neighbour as ourselves, showing that all the Laws could be put together under the one word- love. Notice that we are not asked to get a “feeling” for loving God and others, but are commanded to love others, an act of the will. You will love because God commands it!
By Rev. Michael Connolly
Never mind about your feelings! The Lord was zeroing in on wanting inward change, an attitude change, something that all the outward ceremonies of sacrificing of bulls and goats and so on, could not do for his Jewish people. As a Jew, the teacher of the law was far quicker to pick up where Jesus was coming from than most of his people, and agreed with him wholeheartedly, so that Jesus commended him on being so close to understanding what the
Law and the prophets, and now the gospel, was all about. How are your Bible studies going? The verses for these commands were stuck in different parts of the Old Testament, but it was obvious that he knew his Holy Scriptures. (Deuteronomy Ch 6 vs 4-5; Leviticus Ch 19 v 18). Notice that this verse ends with the point that nobody dared question Jesus anymore. The Lord is our Shepherd. Rev Michael Connolly

Congress says keep door open for more substantial native title reform THE National Congress of Australia’s First People will continue to advocate for more-substantive changes to the Native Title Act, including reversing the onus of proof for claimants, following the Government’s announcement of a raft of reforms last week. Congress Co-Chairs Les Malezer and Jody Broun welcomed the positive reforms as the first stage in the Government’s incremental approach to making the Native Title Act stronger and more workable. The reforms cover taxation, goodfaith negotiations, agreements for historical extinguishment, and a new easier way to vary land use agreements. Co-Chair Malezer said these are positive changes but do not go far enough for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. “Congress will negotiate with the Government about the detail to ensure that it meets our expectations,” he said. “Our agenda absolutely includes the reversal of the onus of proof, consistency with the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and greater protection of our cultural heritage. “Congress will remain focused on protecting our rights and interests and looking at how we can continue the
conversation about more reforms,” he said. Co-Chair Jody Broun said the changes deliver on some of the many issues identified by First Peoples since the Native Title Act was passed almost two decades ago. “Our members are saying that one of the critical factors is how long it takes for claims to be determined and how expensive the process is,” said Ms Broun. “There are more than 400 registered claims in the system and the National Native Title Council says it will be decades before they are concluded. “Many of our old people, as central witnesses in these proceedings, will be gone before these claims are determined. “It will continue to be a tragedy if, like Eddie Mabo, our elders do not live long enough to see their property rights protected. “The Government’s commitment to continue to consult is a good start but we will continue to push for more extensive reform that has the endorsement of many - including Chief Justice French. “The Government is talking about incremental change but 20 years on we think it is also time for bolder moves on Native Title,” she said.

New Aurukun bauxite lease strategy to be formed THE Queensland Government has announced it will present a new strategy to be put in place for the Aurukun bauxite leases, with Deputy Premier Jeff Seeny saying it will put the leases back on the market in the near future, according to the website resourcescareer.com.au “I will take a new strategy to cabinet over the next couple of months and we will look at putting the leases on the market to get value for Queenslanders,” Mr Seeney said. Mr Seeney said in the interim the Government would focus on getting major projects in the Galilee Basin up and running. “The South of Embley bauxite and Alpha Coal mines remain top priorities for the Government and we need to get these projects up and running for the benefit of the Queensland economy.”

Bianca Ambrum selected in State side Alf Wilson story
THE North Queensland ladies rugby league team, performed well at the State Championships held in Ipswich from June 1 to 3, reaching the grand final before losing to the powerful South East side. North Queensland was defeated 26-4 in the grand final, and had performed well to remain undefeated during the qualifying matches. In those games North Queensland Marlins defeated the Barbarians 28-14. For North Queensland Elsja Mosby from Cape York and Mackay’s Naomie Bobongie each scored two tries, with one try to Iesha Lui, who also kicked four goals. On day two North Queensland beat Centrals 26-4 with two tries apiece to Cape York’s Bianca Ambrum and Elsja Mosby, and one to Iesha Lui who kicked two goals. Ambrum also chipped in with one. Points going into the final
were: South East 14.5, North Queensland Marlins 9, Central 5 and Barbarians 1.5. In the decider South East was too good for North Queensland winning 26-4 with Va Cole scoring the only try. Ambrum was recognised for her good form by being included in the Queensland team which will play the NSW women’s team at Centrebet Stadium, Penrith on Saturday, June 23. The game will be played as a curtain-raiser to the Penrith Panthers versus Parramatta Eels round 16 NRL match. The North Queensland side was selected after the North Queensland Championships on May 5 and 6 in Cairns, which was dominated by a Cape United side which included players from Bamaga and Weipa. Five teams including grand final winner Cape United contested the champiosnhips along with Mackay, Cairns, Townsville and Three Rivers.
Cape York girls: Lucy Bond, left, and Bianca Ambrum. Bianca was selected to play for the Queensland side against NSW in June.

Florrie King-Smith (back row second from left) and coach Sam Reuben (back row middle) at the State Championships with the NQ ladies side. Alf Wilson story
SAM Reuben, the coach of the North Queensland ladies side which contested the State Championships at Ipswich has been glowing in his praise of Weipa star Florrie King-Smith. The North Queensland side won two qualifying games at the June 1 to 3 carnival and lost the grand final 28-4 to the powerful South East Queensland outfit. Reuben said that King-Smith was a standout at the carnival and was very unlucky not to gain selection in the Queensland team. “Florrie King-Smith and Elsja Mosby were very unlucky not making the Queensland women’s team after their awesome performances in every game over the weekend.” “A special mention has to be made about Florrie King-Smith, who showed
undeniable ability to play in several positions and do each position so well at 110 per cent. She was also the winner of the North Queensland Marlins team coaching staff and players awards,” Reuben said. Reuben said his side had four selected for the Queensland Women’s Rugby League Team in Heather Ballinger (Cairns), Katie Haren (Cairns), Bianca Ambrym (Cape York) and Deanne Turner (Mackay). “We once again made the grand final against a formidable side from the South East Queensland, who has not been defeated for a very long time.” “The ladies had represented the North Queensland Region at a very high standard and should be very proud of their efforts after putting in a massive effort over the weekend. “One of the main highlights of the weekend was the ability of the ladies to
have a never give up attitude; because there were times we were against it all and would fight back. This was shown in our first game, being down 14-nil at half and then fought back to win 28-14 against a very big and mobile Queensland Barbarians team,” Reuben said. Reuben said that the side has a good future with the new stock of players coming through the region, but this has to be supported by the local footy clubs and community. “There is no doubt women’s rugby league in North Queensland can become very dominant over all other teams in Queensland, if support is strong,” he said. Reuben paid tribute to the other coaching staff Colin Doolah, Kerri Ritchie and Debbie Gallop. Florrie King-Smith was one of the stars for the Cape United which dominated the NQ Championships in Cairns last month.

Rugby league is a game of highs and lows

THE game of rugby league experiences many highs and lows in an action-packed season. NSW State of Origin coach Ricky Stuart really has a dose of the blues. All he does is cry, week in week out. It’s time for him to start letting results do his talking for him. Outgoing NRL CEO David Gallop has moved on and I really think the game is heading in a positive direction ,with many more big decisions coming in the near future. As I keep saying each week, rugby league is the greatest game of all, as it just keeps providing so many opportunities, on and off the field for so many great people. With State of Origin being played in Sydney on Wednesday night round 14 had only five games played this week , but they sure were interesting. The Tigers overcome the benchmark of the competition by beating the Storm in Melbourne which is a massive victory for the Tigers as they have now won six in a row. In a topsy turvey week somehow the

Raiders thrashed the Knights, and I think they might just need more than supercoach Wayne Bennett at the moment. The Sharks put a stop to the Titans three-game winning streak to consolidate their position in the top eight. The baby Broncos outclassed the Roosters and I think the Broncos are just getting ready to really take off for a midseason onslaught. The Warriors and Panthers went to battle in the rain on Monday night and the Warriors came out comfortable winners in the end. Northern Pride played against their mighty arch rivals the Mackay Cutters in Cairns on Sunday which was televised live on Win TV and Imparja. It was very pleasing to see a crowd of around 3000 attend and showcase how good rugby league is up here in Far North Queensland. The local boys didn’t let anyone down by trouncing the cutters in a convincing 36-10 victory. I can’t wait until tonight when Queensland win another series against NSW,

It’s one thing if the kids hold up ears from the bell around her neck that makes sure I know where she is at 3 in proceedings by taking their time, it’s the morning; the need to wear my steel another to have a feline thief park in caps inside all night due to the constant there and watch the drama unfold. attack regime she applies to all bare Eventually she got things sorted out and feet in her range; and the general lack vacated, allowing normal transmission of attention heading my way from the to resume. The split round coincided with the entertainment. The Litter Quitter is a device that sits on the most important fishing comp this year and in between seat in the house in the smallest room, the festivities and a couple of barbecues and is designed to train the cats to use there was a bit of footy caught on the tele. I saw the score in the Swans Bombthe toilet. Now, while it seemed funny at first ers game at half time and predicted a (the mental image of the cat trying come back and the Bombers to win. and there will be emotional tears of joy and heartbreak. It will be exciting to see Queensland’s star players such as Thurston, Slater, Smith and Inglis terrorise the NSW Blues and send them home disappointed, with their tail between their legs, once again.

ROUND 12 – Thu, JUNE 14 - Sun, JUNE 17 THU, JUNE 14 West Coast v Carlton @ Patersons Stadium FRI, JUNE 15 Adelaide v St Kilda @ AAMI Stadium SAT, JUNE 16 GWS v Richmond @ Skoda Stadium Gold Coast v North Melbourne @ Metricon Stadium SUN, June 10 Hawthorn v Brisbane @ MCG Western Bulldogs v Port Adelaide @ Etihad Stadium BYE Collingwood, Essendon, Fremantle, Geelong, Melbourne and Sydney Lucky I didn’t get too carried away, as the Swans just snuck home. I love the fact that the clock doesn’t count down at the ground, it adds another element of unpredictability to the game and that can only be good. I wish they didn’t show the clock on the tele the way they do as well. I saw the Cats get up on Friday night and the thing that stuck with me the most was that these days when the umpire blows the whistle I have no idea what is going to happen next. The free kicks that get paid leave me scratching my head more than they ever have before. It must be difficult for people new to the game to make much sense of it all. The Suns are looking ordinary, to say the least, and I think the second year blues are kicking in big time. I hope the pressure doesn’t get too great too early and they can hold it together as best they can. The Tigers missed an opportunity against the Dockers who proved too clever on Saturday. The poor old Tigers
fans have a roller coaster ride ahead of them again this year. Speaking of struggles, the Demons and the Power both had weekends they’d rather forget. You can really see the difference between the established, mature teams and the others in terms of how they bring in new players. If you look at the Geelong and Collingwood sides from the weekend there would be about a dozen new faces from the grand final last year, yet they all seem to fit into the team and play their role well. The teams lower down the ladder really struggle to introduce the new faces and maintain a winning, or at least competitive, structure. Next week the round will conclude and some of the teams have a weekend off. The Pies look like they’ll be in Port Douglas for the week, so if you’re down that way keep your wallet and car keys close by. Chat next week. Scotty

BE CROC WISE!
How to be Crocodile Wise • Be aware of crocodiles – keep your eyes open, you might not be able to see them, but they are there. • Do not feed or otherwise interfere with crocodiles, small or large. • Avoid areas where large crocodiles or their nests have been seen • Camp at least 50 metres from the waters edge • Stand at least a few metres back from the waters edge when fishing and don’t stand on logs overhanging deep pools. • Do not clean fish, prepare food or engage in other activities on the waters edge and adjacent banks. • Dispose of food scraps (including fish) away from areas where people gather. • Keep arms and legs inside boat hulls.
Send your ďŹ shing photos to: weipabaitandtackle@bigpond.com EUREKA! I finally got out on the water and it felt damn good. The ďŹ rst trip was up the Mission River with Chris Allwood. and we ventured into one of the creeks to score a few small Barra. The next trip was with Gary Mclean and we hit a purple patch, landing Trevally, QueenďŹ sh, Jacks and Barra. I also lost a Barra that would have been over 80cm The lure that was doing the damage for me was a 15a bomber in gold with the orange back, and in the end I never changed it all day. The Weipa Fishing Classic was upon us last weekend and everybody came into the shop to replenish their supplies. I
look forward to hearing all your Fishing Classic yarns, and seeing your pics, for next week’s column. A ďŹ rst-time y ďŹ sherman, ďŹ shing with one of the local guides, cracked it for a SailďŹ sh and to say he was happy would be an understatement. There are plenty of fish offshore, both surface and bottom dwellers, but the Sharks are driving everybody crazy. The leads have been holding Fingermark and Cod with the odd Trevally. In the area adjacent to the mouth of the Waldron there has been some very large Queenfish, so it would be worth a cast or troll on the run out tide. Even after my warning about working the flats there was
a boat stuck on the sand and would have been there ‘til after dark. When ďŹ shing these areas please take care. The carnival atmosphere of the Weipa Fishing Classic is something to behold, with plenty of good food, music and prize giveaways. The boys from Creek to Coast were up here to ďŹ lm an episode of their show and do some MCing and were very entertaining. Things are slow up the creeks, but if you persist there are Barra, Jacks, Fingermark and the odd Grunter with live bait working better than lures. On the beaches it’s quiet as well. Some anglers are getting a few, but on the whole not much is happening.
The Mission River bridge has been going okay after dark for Barra, but don’t bother casting if you can’t hear them hitting the baitfish. The odd Grunter has been coming in from here also. Who was it that went to the Evans Landing jetty before daylight on Saturday morning, taking cookers, bacon, eggs, rolls and coffee so they could stay longer, only to find a sausage sizzle happening? Gee, I haven’t a clue but I could have Streched it out I suppose. I still haven’t received any photos for the junior capture contest or for the column. Please send them in to: weipabaitandtackle@bigpond.com Until next week, tight lines
