WEIPA Town Authority chairman Peter McCulkin is encouraging all people from across Cape York to attend the Peninsula People’s Forum this Saturday and express their concerns at the Federal Government rush to secure a World Heritage nomination of the majority of Cape York by February 2013. To help facilitate Weipa residents’ ability to attend the Peninsula People’s

Forum the WTA is partnering with Serco to provide a free bus to Musgrave Roadhouse. Mr McCulkin said the forum, to be held at Musgrave Roadhouse from 10am this Saturday, November 3 is an opportunity for people to meet and demonstrate to the Federal Government their opposition to “the current levels of ‘gamin’ consultation and ludicrous time lines for World

Heritage nomination for the Cape�. “This is a critical issue for every person living on the Cape, and particularly for the residents of Weipa,� Mr McCulkin said. “The future of Weipa and its residents is very dependent on mining; a diverse economy underpinned by both the South of Embley Project and Cape Alumina’s projects to our north. Free bus for Peninsula People’s Forum attendees UU from page 1

“This forum is our opportunity to send a clear message to Minister Tony Burke, the rest of his Labour colleagues and the Wilderness Society. “There may be rocks in the ground here around Weipa, but the Wilderness Society has rocks in their heads if they think the people of Weipa will sit by and watch them cast doubt on our future,� Mr McCulkin said. The free bus will leave the WTA Council Chambers at 5am sharp to arrive in time for the 10am forum start at Musgrave. The bus will commence the return journey at 3pm, arriving back in Weipa at around 8pm. F O R M E R C a p e Yo r k Sustainable Futures President Bob Sullivan has labelled as clandestine, the Federal Government’s rush to secure a World Heritage nomination of the majority of Cape York by February, 2013. And he has nicknamed Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke as “Backdoor Burke�, because of his refusal to involve CYSF, seven councils, residents, business owners, leaseholders and pastoralists in the consultation process, stating the government only needs the approval of Traditional Owners. A CYSF foundation member with 25 years in the organisation and a former Cook Shire Mayor, Mr Sullivan said real consultation is talking to everyone. “Why the rush?� Mr Sullivan asked. “The Indigenous people have looked after the land for 40,000 years, and, between them, the pastoralists and residents of the Cape, we’ve done a pretty good job of

He voiced his concerns the economic development of the region would be stifled by a World Heritage listing. “I don’t believe World Heritage will allow the people of Cape York to engage in projects that will secure real jobs and real economic development,� he said. “The well-being of the people of Cape York is secondary to their agenda.� Instead, he accused the Federal Government of adopting the process for political advantage, securing the votes

So much land under UNESCO protection!’ To achieve this project before the next election, we need to proceed quickly but in a politically correct way. Clearly we cannot allow outsiders to interfere with our decisions, so we will not be consulting mayors and other politicians who just happen to live there. They are always banging on about themselves and their own limited lives, and I despair of them ever sharing the bigger vision of the Federal Government. They think that the Green vote is something that happens to other people, not a vital prop in our electoral process. Australia needs to make the Greenies happy

I have arranged for a consultative meeting with the right sort of people at a pub in a town called Musgrave on Cape York. The Minister will be represented by young Hodgkins, who is a junior member of this department and will have a bright future here once he grows out of his spots. This meeting will give you an inside view of government thinking, and we can get the whole consultation thing done and dusted by Christmas. DEAR Minister Burke, The proposition by the Federal ALP Australian Government to Heritage List, in effect close off, vast amounts of Traditionally Owned land in Cape York Peninsula is a travesty and is typical of the ALP’s attitude in approach to Indigenous Land Owners time and time again. Cape York has continuously suffered immensely due to inaction by the ALP at different levels of government due to various impositions, apartheid laws and general disregard to basic services and maintenance. Heritage Listing the Cape has little to do with actual environmental care. It is an excuse to continue to not pay attention to what really matters in the Cape. If it is Heritage listed, the Federal ALP Government will not have to look after gas lines, roads, town expansion and other viable employment opportunities and community needs. Even if there is not much call for it now, it should be kept an option in case locally driven business enterprises wish to make the most of the areas and also if the mining leases are extended and/or moved. Faith in the fact that the Cape will continue to be strong and will grow with vigour and passion, is something the ALP obviously do not have. It is money-saving and laziness disguised as Green Agenda. Heritage Listing the traditional lands which we, fellow First Australians, supposedly have “ownership� over, will see us no longer have rights to land use and land development. This stands as a pure cor-

ruption over the land rights and sovereignty many of my predecessors have lobbied so hard for over the past few decades. With a very arrogant and head-strong approach by Tony Burke MP on this subject, and a very determined attempt to secure Green votes in the south; this is not a proposal I can accept or support. It will stifle existing mining opportunities and see no future opportunities. As everyone knows, mining benefits the world and the remote towns which house such operations in a number of ways- just ask the Weipa Town Authority.

I am not prepared to see the future of the Cape so quickly judged by any side of politics, especially not on the brink of pre-re-election campaigns. It is a bad decision and I am not happy with the lack of consultation of Aboriginal land owners, of which I’ve no doubt, a large majority do not want to see the futures of their jobs, towns and the future for potential and more diverse land use opportunities, and the futures for their children’s employment and education status in years to come, be so swiftly cast aside due the ALP’s proposition. The ALP may well put forward their alternatives to industry employment were mass “zoning off� of the Cape’s assets, resources and land were heritage Listing to go ahead, however it will not match the level of financial sustainability that is already propping up remote Far North Queensland.

By doing this they want to, not shut off the Cape to mining companies, they want to shut off the Cape to Traditional Owners and people who call it home. Me saying to keep the Cape open, is not me saying to keep it open to mining companies; it is me saying let’s keep it open to us and the people to use and enjoy, and to learn to make a decent life from and on, like every other land-owning Australian has the right to. I urge the ALP and the Federal Opposition to move away from this Heritage Listing rhetoric and make action on the much more urgent and pressing concerns to the Far North, namely: • The high cost of living; • The lack of diverse education and employment opportunities aside from the mining industry in remote FNQ; • The need for higher-education facilities and funding to allow children to remain in their home towns to complete schooling like any other child around the nation; • Sea-walls for the Torres Strait; • Investing in the arts in FNQ; • Linking the regional assets to other regions for the sake of a more united, financially sustainable and diverse eco-

nomic growth via a regional economic revival plan or strategy; • Agriculture and Agri-Business, and many other more pressing issues which this Heritage Listing proposition (and which I believe it is designed to) distract voters from advocating for these issues as well. I thank David Kempton MP, Member for Cook, the Assistant Minister for A&TSI Affairs, for his advocacy for the numerous other issues. As he knows the Cape deserves more varied discussion around it and knows that there is more to work on in these communities than just alcohol-related debate and Heritage Listing. Once again, I implore all Governments and all Oppositions to focus on these other issues as well. If one was in the more urban cities the political discussion would not be allowed by the public to focus only on a few pink elephants. Shame on the Federal ALP for not having the courage to truly address the immediate and long-term needs and challenges of the Cape. Paul (driving his car “Cape York Moke�) originally posted the idea of the Moke Cape Trip on an internet Moke forum 12 months ago and although seven people put up their hands to make the journey, only Spider and Tony were able to complete the trip. The three adventurous enthusiasts spent 12 months rebuilding their much-loved cars from scratch before attempting the month-long drive. “We tricked up the suspension on the cars to cope with the rough roads, and made a few little refinements such as interior lights and separate gauges, but other than that they are stockstandard Mini Mokes,� Tony, who along with Spider has a mechanical background, said.

“Tony is from Wodonga in Victoria, and Spider is based in Sydney so they drove to Adelaide to pick me up and our adventure began from there on October 4,� Paul said. Leaving the big smoke the boys drove through Whyalla, Lee Creek and Marree in South Australia before hitting the Birdsville Track...something usually tackled by 4WD enthusiasts, not 2WD, four-cylinder Mokes. The boys said they had a great run up the famous Track, but it was rocky and bumpy, and the lack of airconditioning in the extreme heat (42 degrees Celsius) and dust had them thinking “it can’t get any worse than this, can it?� After the obligatory lunch at the Birdsville Pub the Moke Blokes headed up to Mt Isa, and encountered their first hiccup, breaking a driveshaft on one of the vehicles. “About a quarter of the gear we carry is spare parts, including spare driveshafts, so we were back on the road within an hour, and that included

Unable to find accommodation in Mt Isa they continued onto Cloncurry, Hughenden, Charters Towers, Townsville and eventually Cairns. “We only planned to be in Charters Towers for five minutes to fuel up and grab a cold drink, but we ended up spending several hours in the town as so many people wanted to talk to us, and look at the cars,� Spider said. “A fellow Moke enthusiast had received a phone call alerting him to the three Mokes driving into town so he jumped in his car and tracked us down,� Tony said. The boys had put an alert on the www.mokesinc.org forum trying to locate spare driveshafts and were astounded at the response they had to their SOS. “People were just so generous, it’s been very humbling,� Tony said. “We picked up the spares from all sorts of places, and people refused to accept payment for them. There’s so many good people out there who just love seeing this sort of stuff.� Having spent the best part of a week driving through the outback the boys were delighted to finally see the ocean when they pulled into Cardwell. “I just had to pull over,� Paul said. “The sea was so inviting, and after the dry and dusty conditions we’d been experiencing, it was an unplanned but beautiful stop.� Stopping in Cairns for three nights the boys hooked up with another Moke guru, Darren from Cairns British Auto Repairs, who went out of his way to sort out a few of the mechanical problems the cars had developed. “Despite the fact it was Sunday Darren welcomed us into his home, where he has a full workshop set up, and gave up most of his day to help us. It was just fantastic,� Paul said. “I had an engine problem which required part of the engine to be taken apart and Darren ended up having to make a custom tool to do the job.� With cars repaired the boys headed up to Cooktown via the Bloomfield Road, encountering their first creek crossings. “It was just spectacular and would have to be one of my favourite parts of the trip,� Paul said. From Cooktown the next stop was Hann River – an unscheduled stop as Paul broke part of his suspension in “a dust hole that had it’s own postcode� - but were back on the road within an hour again. Although the drive from Hann River to Archer River was hot and dusty the Mokes handled the road well, cruising between 80 and 100 kilometres an hour most of the time. Once the Mokes met the corrugations on the PDR they realised the roads could indeed get worse than the Birdsville Track. “It was better to drive in the ‘gutters’ than be shaken to death on the actual road,� Paul said. Just before arriving at their next camp spot, Eliot Falls, Tony’s Moke (affectionately known as ‘Gulliver’) broke a shocky mount as the Mokes tackled the Telegraph Track. “It was nothing major, just inconvenient,� Tony said. “The cars are so simple, they are easy to repair.� Spider described Eliot and Fruit Bat Falls as an oasis, and after a well deserved swim and a good night’s sleep the boys took their time driving to the Jardine River ferry crossing, saying the last seven kilometres before the ferry were the most bone-jarring they had expierienced so far. “I bought a winch in case we needed it for creek crossings, but we decided the ferry was a better option,� Spider said. “Once we crossed over the Jardine it was almost like entering another

country� Paul reflected. “And it was spectacular.� Making the Loyalty Beach Camp Ground and Fishing Lodge their base camp the boys spent the next five days exploring ‘the top end’, including making the journey to the most northern part of Australia. On the way back from the tip Paul’s Moke suffered a broken shock mount, forcing a weekend-stay at Loyalty Beach until it could be repaired by Mark at Top End Motors in Seisia. “That’s when it started raining,� Paul said. “Being from South Australia I saw more rain fall in one day than I would in a whole year!� “During the rain I woke up in three inches of water and everything we possessed was wet, so we decided we would pack up and move to a motel. “Debbie Francis wouldn’t hear of it and insisted we stay in the ‘dongas’ which was just brilliant.� While at Loyalty Beach Paul and Spider drove to Robinson Creek to go fishing and managed to bog the car. “It only stopped us for an hour as we dug the car out with our hands, and using old conveyor belt I keep in the car for traction under the wheels we were able to carry on,� Spider laughed. After spending a couple of nights at the Weipa Caravan Park and Camping Grounds in the relative luxury of a beachfront villa Spider, Paul and Tony were back in their Mokes and headed to Tamworth for the ‘Moke Round-up’ (organised by Newie) where around 50 Mokes, accompanied by support vehicles, will meet for their bi-annual gathering, and I’m quite sure the three of them will be regaling their fellow enthusiasts with stories from their “trip of a lifetime�.

MORE than 200 people gathered at Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal on Friday, October 19 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Sea Swift, Australia’s largest privately owned shipping company. Torres Strait musical legend Seaman Dan was on hand to provide the entertainment alongside another worldclass entertainer in Daryl Braithwaite. Long-service awards were handed out to Sea Swift staff, and Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch, National Party leader Senator Barnaby Joyce, and other key politicians and business operators from across Far North Queensland, also attended the event. Free mine tours for residents at the final quarterly community forum will provide an inside glimpse into the Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa mining operations.

RIO Tinto Alcan Weipa will run free mine tours as part of their final quarterly community forum for 2012. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa general manager of operations Jo-Anne Scarini said that the tours were extremely well received by the community as a part of the last forum for 2011. “At the end of last year we received some really positive feedback about seeing an inside glimpse into our operation, so we will run the tours again this year,� Ms Scarini said. “The tours are a great way for residents and their families to learn more about the mining process and see some of the equipment we use up close.� The upcoming community forum will be held on Saturday, November 17 at the Western Cape Cultural Centre, located in Evans Landing, from 9.30am. The mine tour will take residents

onto the mining lease where they will travel along side haul trucks, see the beneficiation process and learn about the final process stages from the train to the ship loader. “The tour will finish back at the Western Cape Cultural Centre for a barbecue lunch and we will provide an update on the operation for the year,� Ms Scarini said. “As always, we will ensure there is an opportunity for attendees to provide feedback or ask questions on any other aspects of our business, such as production, environmental programmes, and employment opportunities.� There are limited spaces on the tour so residents will need to register their attendance by phoning the freecall Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa community hotline 1800 707 633 or email RTAweipafeedback@riotinto.com. CONCERNS have been raised in recent months over an increasing number of people accessing remote parts of the mining lease without the required authorisation. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa Health, Safety and Environment manager Holly Wallace said employees and contractors have heard gun shots and/or have come across individuals with fire arms in the broader lease area. “We have had incidents where personnel have been forced to cease work and leave the area when they heard gun shots,” Ms Wallace said. “There have also been occasions where personnel operating heavy equipment have come across individuals camping or hunting. When they have spoken to the individuals, they were surprised that anyone would be working at such a remote location.” Ms Wallace said these sorts of incidents are a timely

Work Start participants prepare for graduation THE participants of the Indigenous PathWays Solutions Work Start are preparing for their graduation. In the past six weeks the participants have been very busy increasing their skills and opening up opportunities to bring their goals of entering into a traineeship with Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa closer. Participants have studied workplace practices and will receive a Certificate I and II at the end of their eight-week program.

They have focused on health safety and environment, communication skills and team building activities to name a few. The participants were also very lucky to work at the mine for a full shift which gave a great insight into the role. This week they will stage an event to introduce themselves to the management team of Rio Tinto and to other local business owners to show how they have increased their employability skills.

Taskforce aims to sustain turtle and dugong numbers

FULL bans and hunting quotas are among some of the measures supported by a taskforce of Cape York community leaders aiming to protect and sustain turtle and dugong numbers in the Far North. The Cape York Turtle and Dugong Taskforce, a group comprised of elected community members and traditional Cape York custodians, held its inaugural meeting in Cairns on October 26. During the meeting the group discussed their commitment to the sustainable management of turtle and dugongs according to traditional indigenous lore. The taskforce outlined the systems they would endorse to sustain the animals, which included implementing permit systems, temporary hunting closures (when dugong are most vulnerable), full bans and traditional hunting quotas. Members of the Yuku Baja Muliku, Lama Lama, Apudthama, Kuku Ya’u Kaanthanampun and Wuthathi communities of Far North Queensland said they would work alongside government agencies such as the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the Department of Environment and Heritage to achieve such commitments. will stretch from Cooktown to Princess Charlotte Bay, Lockhart River and Shelbourne Bay, Raine Island and across the northern section of Cape York. Taskforce member Roger Williams, from Injinoo, said the group aimed to try and cut down numbers of the dugong and turtle being caught. “We will try and start to share the catch so if you feed the next fella he won’t have to go for another one, try that and if it doesn’t work then we can close it down. “We want to work with the government to try and make it good, and also with our own people,� said Mr Williams. Taskforce member from Coen, Jenny Creek, said it was imperative to protect turtle and dugongs so they can remain there for future generations. “I don’t want my great grandchildren to say to me ‘what does this turtle and dugong look like that you are talking about.’ We don’t want to see that happen,� said Ms Creek. The taskforce also aims to address impacts on turtle and dugong populations from seagrass die off, commercial boat strikes, feral pig predation and erosion. This process has been funded and supported by the Federal Government and implemented through Balkanu Cape York Development Corporation.

Harsh drinks like cola and even diet cola are very acidic and can cause damage to your teeth. Juices, wine and other sodas are as well. Never have acidic foods or drinks just after or just

before you brush your teeth, that will allow the acidity to go and “eat upâ€? your teeth. I asked my dentist Shane Hearps, “if you had one suggestion for the people of Weipa, in regards to oral health, what would it be?â€? He suggested bringing forward the topic of the linkage between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease which can lead to heart attacks and/or strokes, as he ďŹ nds it one of the major health problems in regards to his profession as a dentist in Weipa. “The issue is not so much the actual physical damage caused by the periodontal disease; it is the enzymes and toxins released by a couple of speciďŹ c bacteria associated with advanced periodontal disease,â€? Shane said. “There is also a strong link between these bugs and pregnancy problems, for example low birth weight, premature birth and foetal death as well.â€? After doing some research it seems to me a bit hard to know which one comes ďŹ rst, however scientiďŹ c research has found that “people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to have coronary artery disease (also called

heart disease)â€?. š Well if that is not a good reason to grab your toothbrush straight away and make sure you get rid of those nasty bacteria I don’t know what is! Here are some tips to beat both cardiovascular disease and periodontal disease at the same time: • Brush your teeth two to three times a day and make sure you get in the corners which are less visible and harder to reach • Floss • Change your toothbrush regularly, every six weeks • Stop smoking: Smoking plays a significant role in bacteria build up that lead to gingivitis. ² • Reduce alcohol consumption • Avoid drinks and foods high in sugar and acid (they generally go hand in hand) • Go for regular check-ups at your dentist (once a year) even if you are not experiencing problems • Control diabetes which goes hand-in-hand with gum disease • Eat a balanced diet with plenty of vitamins and minerals from fresh vegetables and fruit. ANOTHER month has quickly passed and, because of this, I find it both exciting and somewhat startling that I am writing the third column of ‘Chamber Chatter’ on behalf of the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce. As a community group we are already discussing options and ideas for our next meeting, which will include guest speakers and Christmas celebrations for our members in appreciation of their participation and contribution to the Chamber throughout the past year. A general meeting as well as the annual general meeting was held on October 17, 2012. Members were informed and enlightened after a presentation from Cape Alumina representative Neville Conway, (general manager, external affairs) and Colleen Fish (manager). This same presentation focused largely on areas of progress and development in the Cape and of Cape Alumina’s involvement and support with this. The general meeting moved on

The Western Cape Chamber of Commerce is now ready to support and assist business houses in and around the Cape for another year. As part of the Chamber ’s ongoing service to local and surrounding area businesses within the Cape the Chamber has encouraged and supported the emergence and engagement of a tourism sub-committee known as ’ Western Cape Tourism’. This same committee met on Friday, October 26 2012 and

discussed related topics, possible options and explored ideas to connect and support business houses with the financial, environmental and social aspects connected to tourism. Several advantageous opportunities and ideas were addressed with a view to supporting current businesses in the Cape. Rangers are requesting any sightings of the Snubfin Dolphin be reported to the Mapoon Land & Sea Centre.

WEIPA Volunteer Marine Rescue held a successful monster raffle last Friday night at the Weipa Bowls Club. Local VMR members have been busily selling tickets in the raffle which boasted a $10,000 cash first prize, with only 200 tickets available at $100 a ticket. All 200 tickets were sold prior to Friday night’s draw and the lucky first prize winner was Dick Foster. Second prize of $500 went to Claire Wilson and the $100 third prize was won by Peter Siegmeier. Weipa VMR skipper Crazy Pete said the money raised from the raffle would be used to complete the VMR shed currently under construction at Evans Landing.

Bomber and Nette eagerly awaited the draw.

Cape York hit by rugby league blitz ALMOST 1000 young rugby league players from Cape York Peninsula have enjoyed spending some time with the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys’ development team during a week-long stay in the north. North Queensland Toyota Cowboys game development manager Ryan Mahoney and Cowboys under-20 squad members Brady Williams and Thomas Ketchell, joined up with Cairns-based QRL development officer Cameron Miller, Weipa-based ARL/QRL development officer Karl

Adams and Northern Pride’s Chey Bird and Josh Sailor to visit a range of towns and communities on the Cape. The highlight of the trip, funded by the Department of Sport and Recreation, was a two-day camp, including coaching clinics and matches, held last Thursday and Friday in Weipa to select the under-11 Weipa development squad. The tour group started off at Laura State School and also visited schools and communities in Coen, Lockhart River, Arukun and Mapoon before

arriving in Weipa to attend the Western Cape College sports presentations. “Over the course of the trip, we came into contact with hundreds of kids who love rugby league which made the week very enjoyable for all of us involved,” Mahoney said. “It reinforced to everyone in our group how popular rugby league is on the Cape and how much talent there is in the region. “We’ll definitely be back in 2013 where he hope to have even more kids be part of our visit.”

THE Kowanyama side which contested Queensland’s biggest Allblacks carnival in Cairns last weekend lost their three games which gave them no chance of winning. A huge 30 men’s sides contested Queensland’s biggest Allblacks carnival. First up the Cape Cluster premiers lost 24-16 to Mareeba team Western Bulls after leading easily in the first half. Then Kowanyama came up against the star-studded Kulpiyam side from Badu Island and went down 18-6. Kulpiyam included star Weipa-based forward Jimmy Baira and after the siren players from both sides posed together for a pic. Kowanyama had a side consisting of local players from the Cape York community.

“That was a very creditable performance as Kulipyam had many of the better players at the carnival,” coach Dave Kennedy said. Best Kowanyama players on day one were Fitzroy Lawrence, Elron Lawrence, Dale Brumby, Evans Possum and Damien Greenwool. In their third game Kowanyama lost to

the reigning champions Argun Warriors which included NRL player Chris Sandow (Parramatta Eels). “We lost key forwards to a memorial side and did well against tough opposition. The young fellows will gain great experience,” Kennedy said. A side from Napranum and Mapoon

called the Kookathii Natives did very well at the carnival reaching the finals series before being eliminated by Hope Vale’s Dharrabah Bulls. Curacao Crusaders with players from Townsville and Palm Island won the grand final beating Mulga Tigers 32-10.

Kyle shines at tennis tournaments DURING the September school holidays, Kyle Hunter travelled to Townsville and Cairns for the 2012 North Queensland Junior Age Tennis Championships and the 2012 Far North Queensland Age Tournament respectively. Kyle did really well in the 10 yearsand-under sections, which were run as round robins. In the singles at both tournaments he won 75 per cent of his matches and was runner-up with his partner in the boys doubles in Townsville.

Crocs seek redemption after Sri Lankan victory

THE Weipa Cricket Ground was the venue for the first of a series of 40-over games between the Weipa Crocs and Scherger Sri Lankan cricket side last Saturday. The Weipa boys are getting ready for the Gold Field Ashes to be held in January and the Scherger players appreciate a ‘real’ game of cricket with a real leather cricket ball. Weipa Town Authority chairman Peter McCulkin said it is also an important initiative of the WTA to build a solid relationship with Scherger

staff and clients on the sporting field. The Scherger side scored 165 in 40 overs, and routed the Weipa lads for 100 in less than 30 overs. “It was a case of the old bull and the young bull,” Mr McCulkin said. “They were the young bulls and they could bowl flat out on the stumps and the old bulls reflexes couldn’t adapt.” “They caught every catch and we dropped five catches, and the old adage ‘catches win matches’ certainly applied on

Saturday. In fact we also hit the stumps twice without the bails falling,” he said. The best batsmen for Weipa were Aaron Johnson and ‘Bart’, both scoring 25. LAST week saw the end of round two of Weipa Squash fixtures after which the four A grade teams vying for top spot are Han Solo versus Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader versus Luke Skywalker. B Grade teams contending for top position are Princess Leia versus Yoda and Jabba the Hut versus Chewbacca. A Te a m B o b a F e t t narrowly defeated Team Obi-Wan Kenobi when A2 Jeff Berry alternated victory during the five-game marathon with Tom Murray but Tom won (2-3). A3 Jarrod Stockman easily defeated Steve Lugsdin in the first two games but struggled to keep his winning status in the third game (3-0). A4 Justin Hyytinnen was on a downhill slide against Cole Dalton, beginning well in the first game, but could not keep up the pace (0-3). Team Darth Vader were the winning team when confronted by Team R2-D2 and the latter did not disgrace themselves, forcing most of the matches to five-games. A1 Dave Edward defeated Owen Witt by only two points in their marathon match (3-2). A2 Rod Bielby defeated Aaron Schleich in their pre-played match (3-2), and A4 Jay Murray lost by only a few points to Sherie Hinschen in their five-game

Chrisden Russ (as sub for A4 Ben Tantau) defeated Wenty Long by only three points but what an incredible match this would have been to witness as the last two games went to “long” and one went each way (3-2),. Stephen Borg (as sub for A5 Michael Cridland) proved to be a worthy adversary again Joe Buckley forcing the third game to “long” (0-3). Ned Brown secures PGA PUMP selection

Final programmed golf event for 2012 LAST weekend was the final Carpentaria Golf Club programmed event for 2012, however we will be continuing with competitions each weekend, so please see the monthly sheet on the board at the Club for the weekend events. A Single Stableford, sponsored by Jen and Lee Grainger, was held last Saturday. There was a three-way countback, with all three players having 35 points. The winner was Peter Hill from Lee Grainger and Vesa Hyytinen. The NTPs went to Lee Grainger and Mick Fleming. Sunday’s event was a Single Stroke sponsored by the Club and the winner,

with 74 nett, was Gregg Cairns from Ash Wilkinson with a 75 nett on a countback from Kris Brooks. The NTPs went to Peter Hill and Jock Constantine. I would like to thank all the players that participated in the 2012 programmed events and to remind you that presentation night will be held on Saturday, November 17. Please put your name on the sheet by November 11 so catering can be finalised. Don’t forget the AGM is on this Saturday, November 3 at 10am. LAST weekend a large number of Carpentaria Golf Club juniors tee’ed off for the first of two championship Sundays, the next being this Sunday. There will be no results posted for two weeks and the winners of the championships will be announced at the presentation luncheon

on Sunday, November 11, after the parents versus kids match. So Mum and Dad, warm up the golfing practice so we can flog the kids. Don’t forget to get to the Club 15 minutes before tee-off. Congratulations to Ned Brown on his selection for the PGA PUMP - you will

WELL, another week has flown by and the wind has again restricted fishing offshore and made it mighty uncomfortable for shorebased anglers and the estuary boaters, so not many reports have come to me this week but the ones I received show promise for when the winds abate. Locally there are some good ďŹ sh coming in from the close reefs to the north and south of the entrance leads with Fingermark, Trout, Emperor and Tuskies dominating the captures, and they seem to be taking fresh baits and soft plastics. Out around the leads there are still Trevally, Cobia and the usual bottom ďŹ sh being caught on bait and lures. Trolling the leads you could expect to catch Mackerel, QueenďŹ sh and Cobia on Halco Laser Pro’s in the qantas and bonito colour. I haven’t had any reports of BillďŹ sh captures this week, but I was talking to a prawn trawler skipper who said that when he was sorting his catch he had up to 30 SailďŹ sh feeding on the trash he was tossing overboard. Fishing in the rivers the same story is unfolding, with the wind dictating where you can ďŹ sh, and if you ďŹ nd somewhere

Up at the Seisia Fishing Comp there were 138 entries and the champion angler was Glen Martin with a bag consisting of Trout, Trevally, QueenďŹ sh and Mackerel. I will have a more comprehensive listing next week. Tackle World has a range of Twin River lures from 75mm to 135mm and would be suitable

out of the wind there are ďŹ sh to be caught. Off the rocks around the shoreline, using peeled prawns, Phil from Weipa Electrical has been getting Grunter to 4.5 kilos. Grunter will now get more prevalent as the wet approaches and can be caught by boat and shore-based anglers. The Mission River bridge has QueenďŹ sh, Grunter,Salmon and small Jewfish. Rui from Tackle World got a nice QueenďŹ sh at the Mission River bridge, and his wife landed a lovely Grunter. Red Beach has a few Trevally

Nostalgic Allblacks carnival for Baira boys Alf Wilson story

FOR Weipa rugby league player Jimmy Baira the Cairns Allblacks carnival on the weekend was a nostalgic event. Jimmy, aged 30, and his brothers Roy, 33, and Royston, 34, lined up for Badu Island side Kulpiyam. It was the last time the brothers will ever get to play together, as former Canberra Raiders player Royston has indicated he is hanging his boots up and retiring. In their first round matches Kulpiyam beat 2011 champions Argun Warriors 22-nil, then defeated Mareeba 32-4 and Kowanyama 18-6. Argun Warriors had won the recent Murri Knockout at Ipswich and their side at Cairns included NRL player Chris Sandow (Parramatta Eels). Another Badu Island side Mulga Tigers defeated Kulpiyam 18-6 in the quarter finals. Jimmy and Roy’s mother Maria Baira were in Cairns for the carnival and said it was nostalgic for the brothers. “The brothers have played four times together in all the years of Allblacks which goes back to when Roy was 15. Jimmy started at age 15 too,� Maria said. “They played once for Dolphins in Townsville and once for Kulpiyam in Townsville and twice in Cairns, including this
