A pair of thongs and cast net abandoned af Trunding Creek sparked a search for a possible crocodile attack victim.

A CAST net and a pair of thongs left on the bank of Trunding Creek caused quite a stir in Weipa last Friday. A member of the public located the abandoned items while on an early morning walk and reported them to Weipa Police at around 7am.

As Trunding Creek has been the scene of crocodile attacks and sightings, Police were concerned for the welfare of the person who abandoned the ﬁshing gear. Local Boating and Fisheries ofﬁcers joined Weipa Police in a search of the creek by boat following the

report. Although several crocodile slides were seen they failed to ﬁnd any sign of the ﬁsherman. Weipa SES Volunteers conducted a search of both sides of Trunding Creek later that day but failed to locate any evidence of a missing person. Although Weipa Police

had not received any reports of missing persons at the time they appealed to the public for information regarding the abandoned fishing gear in the hope someone would claim the net and thongs and solve the mystery.  continued page 2

At 10.15am the following day two local males aged in their mid-20s attended the Weipa Police Station to declare ownership of the cast net and thongs. They stated they had been fishing Thursday night at the mouth of Trunding Creek with other friends when one of the two left earlier, and the remaining persons were unaware he had left the cast net and his thongs on the shoreline. “They were both informed of the unnecessary work and stress that was caused by their complacency,” Snr Sgt Jenkins said. “Both men had an appreciation for the concerns they had caused and were apologetic.” Weipa Police are urging all locals to be mindful of the situation that arose from this simple mistake, to please take care around the water. and always be croc wise in croc country. Weipa Police would also like to acknowledge the assistance of Weipa SES, Weipa Boating and Fisheries and Weipa Parks and Wildlife Services.

$24.5 million to progress Cape York Welfare Reform at Bowlies! MONDAY WHAT’S ON...

The Federal Government will invest $24.5 million over two years to build on the significant gains that have been made in improving Aboriginal people’s lives in the four communities participating in the Cape York Welfare Reform trial. This funding injection in the 2013-14 Budget will continue the Family Responsibilities Commission (FRC) and other key parts of the program, as well as introducing new measures to further support school enrolment and attendance, and re-engage disengaged youth with education, jobs and life skills in the communities of Aurukun, Coen, Hope Vale and Mossman Gorge. The Minister for Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, said the Australian Government’s funding includes provision to operate the School Enrolment and Attendance Measure (SEAM) in the participating communities, to help ensure children attend school every day. “The recently released

Commission will work with families, the schools and Centrelink to develop attendance plans. If parents do not meet their part of the agreed attendance plan, income support payments may be suspended. Payments will be reinstated once the parent complies with their responsibilities. Ms Macklin said that the evaluation also showed that there a number of young people who are not participating in education, training or employment.

“We want to see young people fulfilling their potential and learning the benefits of personal responsibility,” Ms Macklin said. “That is why we will also introduce a package of measures to support disengaged young people between the ages of 16 and 21.” Newly funded youth workers will be available to provide better support to young people in the communities. They will work closely with the FRC and with disengaged young people to help them develop an action plan to undertake education or training, address any barriers to participation, develop the skills needed to get a job, and where relevant, improve their parenting skills. The FRC will also have the option of referring them to income management.

The Family Responsible Commission will be made aware of parents of children who are not enrolled and will work with them to address any barriers to enrolment. If children fall below the set attendance benchmark, the Family Responsibility

Community advisory group to help manage crocodiles The State Government has given north Queenslanders an opportunity to have a direct say on crocodile management in their local area with the establishment of a community advisory group. Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection Andrew Powell last week announced the establishment of the North Queensland Community Advisory Group for Crocodile Management to provide the government with local advice. “We already have the scientists, now we’re looking for vital input from locals,” Mr Powell said. “I have asked 12 people including

local councillors, local Members of Parliament and north Queensland identities with significant crocodile management experience to become part of this community-focused group. “By including key representatives from the north Queensland community, the government will ensure its approach to crocodile management will be responsive, effective and well informed by local input.” Mr Powell said the role of the group would be to discuss with the department current and new crocodile issues and to suggest improvements and future management options.

WeIPA’S hibberd Library will be participating in the National Simultaneous Storytime reading of “The Wrong Book”. The annual campgain aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books and proved very popular last year. The storytime reading, to be held simultaneously around the nation at 11am on Wednesday, May 22, promises to be a colouful, vibrant and fun event with prizes for best-dressed characters from “The Wrong Book” – elephants, monsters, pirates, a queen, rats and a puppet. This year’s picture book, written and illustrated by Australian author and illustrator Nick Bland, tells the story of Nicholas Ickle who is trying to tell a story, but he keeps getting interrupted by characters from other stories including a pirate, a queen and some monsters. To get a chance to tell his story, he has to convince the others that they are in the wrong book. Everyone is invited to head to the Hibberd Library, Rocky Point, at 11am, Wednesday, May 22 to enjoy the storytime reading.

Successful Indigenous Carbon Farming Fund projects announced ENVIRONMENT Minister Tony Burke and Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change, Industry and I n n o v a t i o n Yv e t t e D’Ath last week announced the 44 successful applications under the Australian Government’s Indigenous Carbon Farming Fund Capacity Building and Business Support stream. Mr Burke said through this program, the Australian Government is helping Indigenous Australians access carbon farming specialists, business development expertise and legal advice for their carbon farming projects. “These projects are s pread acros s A us tralia and range from

undertaking feasibility assessments to developing carbon farming project ideas and existing carbon farming businesses,’’ Mr Burke said. “This program will not only provide beneﬁts for our environment but also provide employment opportunities in indigenous communities.” Mrs D’Ath said the projects have received funding to assist Indigenous communities to beneﬁt from the Carbon Farming Initiative. “The Research and Development stream of this initiative provides funding to underpin CFI methodologies and the development of tools for estimating and reporting on emis-

sions,” Mrs D’Ath said. “Up on Cape York Peninsula, where the project area covers an area of up to 2,300,000 ha in Aurukun, one group aims to avoid emissions of approximately 30,000 tonnes CO2 per year.” The Fund will provide $22.3m over ﬁve years to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to participate in the CFI. The CFI enables Indigenous landholders and land managers to earn carbon credits by undertaking projects to reduce emissions or store carbon. Types of projects include early season savannah burning and environmental plantings. Successful category 1 applicants (up to $50,000) included:

• Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Shire Council - Investigating Potential Savannah Burning for Carbon at Pormpuraaw ($50,000) • Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council - Establishing the feasibility of a Carbon Market for Oriners and Sefton Country ($50,000) • Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council Mapoon Carbon Project ($49,500) Successful category 2 applicants (up to $300,000) included: • Balkanu Cape York Development Corporation - Savannah Burning Investment Ready Project – Cape York Pilot Aurukun ($300,000).

Pleasing response to Firies recruitment drive FOLLOWING an appeal in last week’s Western Cape Bulletin for volunteer’s to join the Western Cape Rural Fire Brigade, members of the local unit set up an information stall in the Woolworths car park last Saturday and were extremely pleased with the response from the public. The Brigade is actively seeking new members over the age of 18 to provide and maintain a regular and consistent pool of volunteers to help respond when needed to help protect our community. By volunteering your time you will be trained in all aspects of fire fighting, road crash rescue, Hazmat situations and structural fires, as well as leadership, teamwork and incident management. THE future is bright for Cairns’ AFL Cape York House following the ofﬁcial opening of the facility on Thursday, May 2. More than 70 people turned out to celebrate the milestone including the 31 Indigenous youths who now live and learn there. AFL Cape York House program manager Rick Hanlon said they had seen remarkable progress since the facility opened in January. “The kids are looking healthy and are far more engaging and conﬁdent in a social environment,” he said. “We have seen excellent school attendance.” The 48-bed house provides youngsters from remote Indigenous communities of Cape York Peninsula, Torres Strait and the Gulf regions with a place to live while they attend Cairns high schools. Work shadowing aids career choices DURING weeks three and four of the Indigenous PathWays Solutions Work Start program the team work shadowed in different areas of the Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa operation. The team had the opportunity to shadow with the Lorim Point bene plant and ship loader, Andoom mine operations and procurement. The Work Start team all enjoyed the opportunities they were given as the knowledge they gathered will enable them to make informed decisions regarding their future careers. Work shadowing also allows crew leaders to get to know potential employees and make better decisions regarding recruitment. The team were extremely grateful to the RTA staff and leaders who generously gave their time to assist with work shadowing. Following the successful two weeks of work shadowing on-site with RTA Weipa crews the work start team began week ﬁve of the eight-week Work Start Program with renewed enthusiasm. This week the IPS team has commenced their Certiﬁcate II competency. This competency will culminate with the IPS Work Start Expo that is being held at the Weipa Town Authority Chambers on May 15. The training also encompasses resume writing and team building. These skills will assist participants to compete for roles at the upcoming RTA Traineeship assessment centre.

PEOPLE living in the remote regions of Far North Queensland face a greater chance of dying from a heart attack, a study has found. Research carried out by a national team, lead by Professor Robyn Clark formerly of the Queensland University of Technology. Professor Clark’s research found that increased remoteness is linked to a greater chance of dying from a heart attack. “Many Queenslanders live in rural, regional and remote communities which are naturally going to have more difﬁculty with getting access to major hospitals,” said Professor Clark. “However, there are also some real issues with places like the far north of Queensland. “It is great Cairns Base Hospital has now upgraded its cardiac services to include a primary catheter lab, but this facility is not available 24 hours a day and the secondary prevention and cardiac rehabilitation services are over-burdened, which is a concern as Cairns is the medical hub for people living in remote areas in the far north.” There are more than 30,000 hospital admissions for coronary heart disease each year in Queensland, and 4,314 coronary heart disease deaths; the second highest number in the country. More than half of heart attack deaths occur out-of-hospital and 25% die within one hour of their ﬁrst ever symptom. Most lives can be saved by getting people to “any” cardiac service within one hour (the “golden hour”) to open up the blocked heart artery. Queensland has the highest number of population centres (643) in the category with the lowest access to cardiac services before and after a cardiac event in the national study, based on distance to a major cardiac hospital and access to medical and rehabilitation services. Approximately 153,450 Queenslanders over 65 years live more than 1-3 hours from a hospital which is a concern as it is vital to seek help quickly. emphasised the need for a focused strategic approach for heart health services to meet the needs of Queenslanders in regional and remote areas. “It’s important that people know the warning signs of a heart attack and seek help quickly. People need to have access to triple zero (000) and emergency medical services as soon as they believe they’re having a heart attack because treatment starts with that call. People in the regions need to act even quicker than city dwellers when they experience the warning signs of a heart attack as they have got further to travel to get help,” said Ms Foreman. “Once triple zero is activated, Queenslanders want to know they and their loved ones will receive the best emergency care and be taken to the nearest and most appropriate cardiac care to avoid death and disability from a damaged heart.” Ms Foreman also urged rural Queenslanders over 45 to see their doctor for a heart health check, so they know what state their heart health is in. “A heart health check can pick up whether you need medication for high blood pressure and high cholesterol,” said Ms Foreman. “It will also show if you need to make lifestyle changes like losing weight or doing more physical activity to reduce your heart attack risk.” The Heart Foundation is also calling for greater investment in preventative health programs that encourage people to live healthy lives to take pressure off the hospitals and emergency services.

A voyage in Young Endeavour is an amazing experience, and one which develops skills for life. Youth crews participate in all aspects of sailing a tall ship, including learning to set the sails, take the helm, navigate using the ship’s charts, and climb to the top of the 30-metre mast. As each voyage draws to a close, youth crews have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills by taking command of Young Endeavour and sailing the ship to their final destination. The hamilton Goldfield was officially proclaimed on July 13, 1900, following the discovery of gold by John Dickie the previous year. The Hamilton field was named for gold miner, investor and member of the Queensland Parliament, John Hamilton. The township of Ebagoola was surveyed in September 1900 to service the newly proclaimed goldfield, with the first Ebagoola camp located close to the site where John Dickie had first made his gold discovery. The surveyed allotments were quickly taken up and within a short period a number of businesses were operating, including a butcher, general store and a hotel. By November 1900 the population had grown to more than three hundred, with a post office and a few years later a school being established. With this rapid growth, other businesses were established to meet the needs of the town’s increased population. These included two

cordial manufacturers, a chemist, baker, barbers, blacksmiths, confectioners, a dressmaker, tobacconist as well as a tent hospital run by the chemist’s wife. However, this rapid growth, heavily propelled by gold mining, was not to last and the rush had ended by 1913. In 1900, the official return of gold was 806 ounces of reef gold and 12,000 ounces of alluvial valued at more than 35,000 pounds, but by the beginning of the First World War this output had dwindled to a trickle. Most of the businesses closed as a result of the resultant fall in population as residents moved away. Ebagoola was virtually deserted by the 1920s with only a few fossickers and prospectors still around. The last resident of the town was said to be Tom Miller who passed away in 1958. The photograph below dates back to 1900 and was taken not long after the original surveying of the Ebagoola township.

Bats in the belfry in Western Cape Western Cape microbats are currently in a feeding frenzy as they fatten up on insects to see them through the coming winter. If they have taken up residence in your roof or walls, autumn is a good time for a gentle bat eviction before they bunk down for their winter hibernation. The Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife’s Backyard Buddies program is all about getting more enjoyment from native animals in your backyard. It provides tips and advice on how to make your backyard a haven for our insect-controlling microbat mates. “Microbats are much more common than you may think,” says Ms Susanna Bradshaw, CEO of the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife, which runs the Backyard Buddies program. “Right now, bats are eating as much as 40 per cent of their own body weight in a single night or several hundred insects per hour.” “Many of our microbat species are hollow-dependent which means they live during the daylight hours inside the hollows of trees or branches. Competition from birds, possums and gliders, along with the clearing of many old trees, means that microbats may find the roof or walls of your home the perfect roosting place,” said Ms Bradshaw. The smallest microbat weighs

only three grams – about the same as a single-serve sugar sachet or a single A4 sheet of paper. If these tiny bats cannot find a suitable hollow, they can slip into gaps as small as 5mm and snuggle down in your roof and walls. This is why artificial roost sites are important as they provide an alternative that everyone can be happy with. Fortunately for the little bats, there are humane ways to evict them and now is the time. In Australia, microbat babies are born in late spring and remain with their mothers until the end of January. Gentle autumn eviction attempts after February and before June make certain that the young are independent. After all, the little bats deserve no harm for taking advantage of ‘faulty’ homes.

“Western Cape microbats are fully protected which might raise the issue of offences and penalties if any are in fact harmed,” explains Ms Bradshaw. “If you want microbats out of your walls, first provide an alternative roost site outside such as a nest box. Then, if done correctly, your walls can become bat free and the

Nail-biting action in soccer round three

WEIPA soccer club’s third round saw some nail-biting action with two draws and some other very close matches. The excitement on and off the field made for a fantastic afternoon of soccer. Game of the week: Tykes Gold v Green A very exciting and closely contested match with many battles between Sean (Green) and Riley (Gold). Gold was impressive in their striking and ball skills and Riley, Reef, Toby and Isaac passed well down the field, but unfortunately had trouble converting their great effort into goals. Gold’s goal scoring was made even harder by some awesome defence from Green. Fantastic kicking and team-

work from Conner, James, Ethan and Sean in the Green team. Amazing speed from Sean and lots of fancy footwork left him exhausted. The game concluded with a draw – Sean kicking the goal for Green and Riley for Gold. Well done boys. AFL wrap-up with Dallas AND then there were two….. Essendon and Geelong remain unbeaten and their eagerly awaited top of the table clash is this weekend…..! Round 6 was reasonably predictable with most of the top sides defeating those lower down. North were about the only exception as they knocked off Port Adelaide and finally start their climb after a horror draw to start the year. This was a must win game for the Kangaroos to salvage their season and they didn’t disappoint over an in-form Power. Collingwood accounted for St Kilda while The Bombers got one hell of a fright against GWS. Essendon rested some of their stars but at around 40 points down in the second quarter it wasn’t looking like a wise move. They fought their way back into the match and steamrolled over the top of the young tiring legs of the Giants in the second half. Geelong were way too classy for the Tigers who have now dropped three games and will need to regroup and find their early season form. Fremantle, despite missing a heap of stars with injury played really well to beat the Suns on the Gold Coast. The Hawks juggernaut continues to roll on, this time in a close one over Adelaide while the Swans embarrassed the Brisbane Lions. Carlton found it all too easy against the Demons and West Coast destroyed the Bulldogs. Round 7 should have some closer contests and none will be better than the much anticipated top of the table clash on Friday night between the Cats and Bombers. Another game which should be a ripper is Port Power hosting Richmond. The Lions play West Coast at the Gabba in what could also be a close affair. North finally get a lowly opponent in the Western Bulldogs and if the Kangas don’t choke should see their season looking brighter again. The Grand Final replay will be a beauty between the Hawthorn and Sydney while in the West, the injury toll at Fremantle may cost them dearly against Collingwood. Adelaide hope to find some form against GWS in the Giants first “real” home game of the season at Skoda Stadium in Sydney’s west. I’m not sure how the busy western freeway will cope with the extra 2 busses needed to ferry the 40 fans to this sporting extravaganza. The Suns will be looking for their first ever victory at the MCG over the struggling Demons in another likely sell-out. I have heard rumours that the MCG cleaning staff have been told to come in early so it doubles the gate figures. St Kilda and Carlton battle it out to complete the round on Monday night. NRL wrap-up with Karl AS origin nears, some individual performances from outside players are throwing out question marks to selectors for a blue or maroon jersey! Friday night brought us a cracker of a game with the Broncos falling short and the Rabbitohs running away and continuing their great early form for 2013. Then the Bulldogs were finally playing to their best, thumping the Tigers in a convincing win. Super Saturday’s matches were all nail-biters with few points between them. The Raiders pulled the upset of the round, beating premiership favourites the Storm. Then there was another close encounter with the Cowboys beating the Eels. Super Sunday had a few matches; the Warriors beat the Titans in a close game. The Sharks beat the Knights in a hard fought contest, and the Roosters continued their great run with a win over the Panthers. Monday night’s match saw the Sea Eagles hold out the Dragons second half run to take the win. Round nine will kick-off on Friday, with the Rabbitohs taking on the Cowboys and the Tigers playing against the Sharks. Then on Saturday there are two games, firstly the Warriors take on the Bulldogs and the Eels verse the Broncos. Super Sunday has three games with the Raiders and Knights battling it out, the Titans and Dragons playing for a win, and the Panthers versing the Storm. Monday night will bring the round to a close with the Sea Eagles taking on the Roosters. I am tipping this will be the match of the round with both teams being very consistent so far in 2013. In local news, the Weipa Rugby League competitions are up and running with the Central Cape Sun’s Junior Rugby League being kicked-off last Thursday and the Weipa Wet Season Senior Rugby League competition being kickedoff last Saturday. Cape York Motorcycle Club fires up for 2013 Things have fired up again out at the Moto X track, with three practice days and a national Come and Try day already behind us. Averaging 30-plus riders at every meet and boasting well over 50 members in the club, there’s a definite buzz in the air within the Moto X scene. The National Come and Try day held in March was a huge success with a massive turn out and signing up half a dozen new riders. This was an Australia-wide event that saw clubs all over the country sign-up hundreds of new riders. So, with a new year of riding ahead of us, the club has been to the polls and elected our new committee: Chas Reinhardt, president (0413 620 727); Dave Hill, secretary (0417 658 897); and Siobhan Carroll, treasurer. If anyone wants to find out

more about the club or how to get involved, don’t hesitate to call Chas or Dave to get pointed in the right direction. Thanks to Weipa Bobcat and Tipper Hire, Goodline and Matt from NQCEC, the club was able to carry out some much needed track repairs and maintenance in preparation for the year ahead. Without the generosity of these local businesses, running the Moto X facility would become very difficult. Riders of all ages and ability are welcome, and with a number of qualified level 1 coaches in the club and a Motorcycling Queensland-approved track layout, there’s no safer way to get into the sport. The Moto Track is open for practice this Saturday, May 11 from 7am. Hope to see ya at the track.

On Friday, May 3 Weipa swimming Club had 51 swimmers partake in the Ribbon night which was a huge success and it was lots of fun seeing many swimmers taking home a ribbon. The results from the season’s last “timed” club night (April 26, 2013) saw Natalia Nash break the eight-year old girls record for the 100m breastroke by over 10 seconds, which has been held since April 2000. Sabrina Koina had another successful meet with breaking four club records for 12-year old girls. Sabrina now proudly holds the records for 50m butterfly, 100m individual medley, 100m freestyle and the 400m freestyle. Other swimmers of the week for the April 26 meet are Kyle Hunter and Alissa Koina both shaving over 40 seconds off their 400m freestyle, Alex McInnes taking 28 seconds off his 400m freestyle and Matthew Ah Shay for beating his 25m backstroke PB (Personal Best) by 22 seconds. Four PBs were swum by Kyle Hunter and Alex McInnes. Three PBs by Katelyn McCahon; two PBs by Kristyn Pilkington, Amy Bakker, Kirra Koina, Millie Marshall, Tiffany McDougall, Alissa Koina and Katie Pilkington. One PB by Mia Williams, Molly Toomey, Zarli Millard, Lilly Nash, Alyssa Taare, Matthew Ah Shay, Elle Toomey, and Natalia Nash. Send your fishing photos to: brettchina@me.com Well, another week has gone by and the wind was blowing its head off from the small cyclone on the east coast, and the offshore reports were zero. So this week’s effort will be all rivers and bays. Louise Pearce and Michael Prychidczuk AKA Chook took their children up to the Wenlock River and had a great time, with the kids catching some good fish. Young Matty started the day by landing a Blue Salmon and big sister Mataya nailed a 60-plus Barra, and then followed that up later in the day with a huge Shovelnose Ray. This is the future of fishing - if you saw these pocket rockets their dedication to the sport is unbelievable for children so young. Later that day, while having a little trolling session, Chook thought he was snagged-up but when the snag came to the top and tried to jump he could hardly believe his eyes. A huge Barra surfaced and with the help of net-girl Louise the Barra was finally landed. After a quick photo and measure a beautiful 126cm fish was returned to the water to hopefully continue breeding for future stocks. It will be your turn next time Lou. Swimming fundraiser exceeds expectations On Saturday, May 4 the Weipa Lightning Swimming Club members successfully completed their 20km Weipa Wildlife Challenge swim. The 20km (800 laps of the pool) challenge swim was completed by the young swimmers in four hours and 35 minutes and the swimmers raised the phenomenal amount of $1871.50 for Weipa Wildlife Care which was triple their set target of $500. Organiser of the challenge, 12-year old Katey McCahon, said she would like to extend a huge thank you to all the community members who came down to support the swimmers, as well as every single parent/ community helper who donated time and resources to assist in this huge achievement. “The community support was overwhelming and it just shows what a generous and caring community Weipa is and part of what makes it such a great place to live,” Katey said. “I’m especially grateful to my fellow Weipa Swimming Club team members who helped raise much-needed funds for Weipa Wildlife Care, especially those who swam the gruelling 20km: Morgan and Maddie McCulkin, Alyssa Taare, Donald Tyson, Alex McInnes, Elle and Molly Toomey, Rachel Brooker, Natalia Nash, Tom McCahon, Kirra, Sabrina and Alissa Koina. “We wouldn’t have been able to do it without you guys!” Katey said. “Let’s see if we can make it even better in 2014 – we might even issue a challenge to other teams for next year.”
