Local policeman stars for Marlins Alf Wilson story & pics

WEIPA Constable Ben Forbes played a leading role for Far North Queensland Marlins side which reached the grand final of the Queensland Police Rugby League Championships in Townsville from May 7 to 10. Eight sides from around the State contested the championships held at the Brothers League’s Club Jack Manski Oval. FNQ Marlins was co-coached by Thursday Islander Barry Nona and Quentin Barba who is a relative of Sydney Bulldogs NRL star Ben Barba. Forbes shone in the FNQ Marlins 24-nil win over Southern Boars on day one. Strong defence ensured the Boars couldn’t cross the Marlin’s try-line and brilliant attack, sparked by Forbes and fellow back Nathaniel Bowman, enabled the side to score plenty of points.  continued page 2 Weipa policeman Ben Forbes, who starred for FNQ Marlins in their 24-nil win over Southern Boars in round one, playing at halfback.

An irreverent, satirical (and totally fictional) comment upon the issues of life, by our faceless correspondent. Isn’t the internet a wonderful thing? If I try hard, I can remember when news meant the ABC radio version. I don’t count the frothy stuff on the music channels - suffering through the presenter’s inane babble to hear a few rushed headlines is not worth it. And by the time the quality newspapers arrived here, whatever they had no longer qualified as news.

Second solar eclipse in six months CAPE York was one of the central sites for the second solar eclipse in six months in 2013 on Friday morning, May 10. Kuranda photographer Druce Horton took this spectacular photo (bottom right) of the eclipse. Druce was able to get this shot through a brief break in the clouds. “It was so cloudy this morning that I didn’t even bother to get the camera out,” Druce said. “But, as for the total eclipse earlier this year, there was a brief thinning of the clouds. “I made a frantic dash for the camera (without a filter) and I lucked this shot.” The Moon’s apparent size was too small to completely cover the Sun though, revealing a “ring of fire” along the central path of the annular solar eclipse. Near mid-eclipse from Coen, a webcast team captured this telescopic snapshot of the annular phase (top right). Taken with a hydrogen-alpha filter, the dramatic image finds the Moon’s silhouette just within the solar disk, and the limb of the active Sun spiked with solar prominences. The eclipse could be seen in an area lying across Australia, eastern Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Ocean. Still, after hosting back-to-back solar eclipses, northern Australia will miss the next and final solar eclipse of 2013. This November, a rare hybrid eclipse will track across the North Atlantic and equatorial Africa and the Gilbert Islands.

Now a few clicks of the mouse and my news is hot and fresh, and coming from such a variety of sources I ought to be able to distil a balanced picture of what is happening in our wide brown land. Yes, I ought to be able but . . . what is it between the newspapers and our Julia? She finally got around to doing something for Australians with disabilities, and I say - bless her little heart! I can totter around fairly well at the moment, but if I ever get stuck in a wheelchair and need continuous help . . . All over the country, thinking Australians approve and even accept a dollar-a-day levy to pay for it. (Except for presenters of those music channels who would prefer to spend their dollar at Starbucks.) So why am I whinging? Look at the

newspapers. Although our Julia has done something most us like – even Tony Ears supports the idea – the newspapers are still treating her like the Wicked Witch of Canberra. If she had decided to eat live fluffy bunnies for breakfast she would not have got a worse press. I happen to like Julia, mostly because she is clever and a woman. I would not go so far as to say I trust her – she is a politician, after all – but she must be very capable to keep a minority government running for three years. Why do the papers get so hysterical about her, and pour bile over everything she does? Because she is so very bad? Bad compared to whom, for goodness sake? Tony Ears? Oh, give me a break!

Solo adventurer rounds Cape York FORMER Paralympian and adventurer Dave Jacka touched down in Weipa on Sunday afternoon two weeks into his world record challenge, to be the first quadriplegic to fly solo around Australia. Dave started his daring adventure on April 29 (at Australia’s most southern point) and had originally planned to rest-up in Weipa for two nights after crossing Australia’s most northerly point after flying up the east coast, however bad weather delayed his schedule in Ingham. Wind and rain forced Dave and one of his support planes to divert to Ingham on May 8, while the second support plane had to spend a night at Dunk Island. The team were reunited in Ingham the next day but were unable to continue to Cooktown as planned as the weather had deteriorated. On May 11 the weather finally improved and the team flew to Cooktown (albeit three days late) where they discovered Dave’s plane (a modified Jabiru J230) had a flat tyre. “Firstly, we had to work out how to jack the plane up so we could remove the tyre and check it out,” Dave reported on his blog. “That’s when team work really helped. The team lifted the plane wing and we supported it with a ladder and protected the wing with (my wife) Linda’s yoga mat. “I was a bit apprehensive at first using this technique, as I hadn’t seen this done before but the good news is... the wing didn’t break off and there was no cracking so all looking good.” After enjoying the hospitality of Cooktown overnight the team flew to Lockhart River to refuel and enjoy lunch. Despite the windy weather Dave said there was a sense of

DAVE Jacka was involved in a motorbike accident when he was 19. He broke the fifth vertebrae in his neck, leaving him with quadriplegia with just six per cent physical function. Dave has limited arm function, no finger function and an inability to move any part of his body from the armpits down. “For me one of the greatest challenges was learning to get out of the wheelchair and into bed and into and out of the car on my own – that gave me my independence back. “It took me 10 years to get my life back”, he said. After his accident, Dave started the charity On a Wing and a Chair aiming to raise expectations of what people with disabilities can achieve and provide inspiration for people with or without disabilities to achieve their own challenging goals. “I want to one day live in a world where people look beyond the disability, and only see people’s capacity to contribute and achieve,” Dave said. Dave’s mantra is that with an open mind and determination, the impossible becomes possible.

eagerness amongst the team to get going as they were so close to Cape York. “When I got flying again, the thought occurred to me that it was so isolated that, if something happened, and you put the plane down, either in the water or on the beach, the only things to greet you would be the sharks and crocodiles!” Dave said. “I was down around 1000 feet as I rounded Cape York. It was pretty bumpy and I was swearing a bit as I was trying to get my GoPro cameras working so I could film my aircraft passing this most northerly tip of Australia.

“Both support planes and mine passed Cape York at about the same time. I did a couple of orbits while Linda took some photos from the Piper Lance.” After leaving the most northerly tip of Australia the team started heading west as it is a more protected area, the cloud base was higher and the flying was much easier. “It was interesting to fly into Weipa with all the bauxite mines visible from the air and to see how large they were! We landed with ease and got fuelled up and ready for tomorrow. “Thanks so much to Trevor Snodgrass from Weipa SES for all his help with our stay in

Weipa. Thanks also to Crazy Pete and Robbie at The Anchorage, and the Albatross Bay Resort for kindly assisting with accommodation – especially given all the changes to our schedule,” Dave said. Armed with sandwiches made by Trevor’s wife Pam, and ably assisted by Trevor, the team took off from the Weipa airport at 9am Monday, May 13 and were blessed with few clouds, light wind and perfect blue sky. hours to support their communities. But these heroes also volunteer their time in the delivery of everyday front-line services. From storm damage response, to firefighting and advanced first aid, volunteers across the State assist in protecting the lives and property of Queenslanders. National Volunteer Week will be held from May 13-19 and I encourage everyone to say ‘Thanks a Million’ to volunteers in their own community. The Department of Community Safety (DCS) recruits, trains and supports more than 40,000 volunteers, who last year dedicated more than 450,000 hours (or in excess of 27 million minutes) to supporting their communities. These men and women commit this time to a range of roles within the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS), State Emergency Service (SES), and Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS).

As Minister for Police and Community Safety, I would like to sincerely thank those individuals who are committed to the safety of Queenslanders. T h e D e p a r t m e n t o f Community Safety could not provide outstanding front-line services without the dedication of these wonderful volunteers. As well as recognising the tremendous work of volunteers, I would also encourage anyone who has thought of becoming a volunteer to explore the options available within DCS. From helping people after a storm or natural disaster, searching for a missing person, providing lifesaving advanced first aid to fighting fires, the opportunities are endless. 2013 WEIPA FISHING CLASSIC:

Only three weeks to go THE major prize has arrived registrations are open and there are only 23 more sleeps until the 2013 Weipa Fishing Classic gets underway. Classic committee members were busy last Saturday signing up registrations and handing out key-tags for this year’s event and they will be back there again this weekend if you missed out (also see registration form page 17). With over $100,000 in prizes to be won over the three-day event (June 7, 8 and 9) this year’s Weipa Fishing Classic is looking at being bigger and better than ever. First prize this year is a 5.45 Allison Arafura boat with safety gear, a four-stroke Yamaha motor and tandem-axle trailer.

GET YOUR KEY-TAG: Weipa Fishing Classic committee members Alex Knight, Tom Murray (president) and Justin Hyytinen taking registrations last Saturday.

Second prize is a powerful TRX420FPM Honda quad bike; third prize is a flawless Argyle whie diamond from Adamas Diamonds; plus there are 27 other amazing prizes on offer. Live entertainment includes Cairns bands Dirty Sanchez and

Downtime, along with local club displays and adults and kids activities for a fun-filled weekend for all the family. The Creek to Coast team will again be lending a hand during the event and will be onstage and around the grounds throughout the weekend.

Weipa Woolies gets on board WoolWorTHs Weipa has, for the first time, become involved with the Weipa Fishing Classic. After a major push from management and team, Woolworths have this year become a sponsor of this iconic event. While the company has backed its Weipa staff with this sponsorship, the staff and management at Woolworths Weipa are getting involved in a major way by holding a stall at the big event. All profits raised from the stall will be going to three groups – Fresh Food Kids Hospital Appeal, Weipa Wildlife Care and Weipa Girl Guides. Woolies also has a major raffle to be drawn at the Classic with prizes valued at $1000, and all profits again going to the three groups above. There have been donations from Tweed Bait, Woolworths Weipa and the Woolworths

Weipa Social Club and management and the team would like to thank them for all their help. However, along the way the Woolies team decided this wasn’t enough . . . with five in-store Saturday barbecues leading up to the Classic weekend already underway. Along with the weekly barbecues there is also an instant raffle drawn that day. Again all profits from the raffles will be going to the Hospital Appeal, Weipa Wildlife Care and Girl Guide groups. “We really hope that by doing these lead-up barbecues and raffles we might be able to double the donations we can give to these groups,” Weipa Woolworths manager Jenny Everist said. “If you would like to help us help others, and maybe win some great prizes along the way, please support our

barbecues and raffles and get behind our community.” Winner of the first raffle, who walked away with a $179 esky and $50 worth of Tweed Bait was Matt Feeney.

RFDS: changing lives for 85 years THIS week marks the 85th anniversary of one of Australia’s best known and loved organisations, the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The Flying Doctor opened its doors in the north west Queensland town of Cloncurry on May 15, 1928, and took off on its first flight two days later. During its first year, the fledgling service treated 250 patients and flew around 22,000 air kilometres. Today, it has grown to be one of the largest and most comprehensive aeromedical services in the world. The Flying Doctor was the dream of visionary Presbyterian Minister, Rev. John Flynn, who had seen first-hand the struggles of the pioneers and settlers in the Outback, where just two doctors provided the only medical care for an area of almost 2 million square kilometres. Flynn’s aim was to provide a “mantle of safety” for the inlanders and his aerial medical service was so successful that today the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) looks after more than 270,000 people in Australia every year – that’s one person every two minutes! In Queensland alone the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) has a fleet of 19 aircraft, and provides emergency medical retrieval and other health care services from eight strategically located Bases across the state. From a document or small parcel through to dangerous goods and bulk commodities, Toll has the experience, the infrastructure and the global networks to get your freight moving – across towns, across countries, across continents and delivered to your door in Weipa.

MAPOON Land and Sea Ranger Jocelyn De Jersey has had three photographs selected in the finals of the WIN (World Indigenous Network) photo competition. The judges reviewed more than 300 photos from 36 countries, and they received the photos and descriptions without names or country so there could be no author or location basis. The winners of the photographic competition will now be decided by on-line voting. The images are split into two categories and Jocelyn’s photos are featured in the under 27 years category. Entrants were amateur photographers who shared their perspective on land and sea management, knowledge sharing, communities, families, youth and culture. The theme was ‘through your eyes’ and aimed to showcase the work, expertise and knowledge of Indigenous and Local Community land and sea managers across the globe. To vote for Jocelyn’s photos go to www.worldindigenousnetwork. net. You can vote for as many images as you like, and the winners will be announced on the final day of the WIN Conference, May 29, 2013.

JESUS Barrabas the murderer was chosen over Jesus who called himself the Son of God. Jesus was a model citizen compared to Jesus Barrabas. These same accusers of Jesus saw him do good time and again for the people, healing the sick, raising the dead, and bringing hope to the poor and oppressed. But in their legal and hard religious hearts, they could not see God at work but rather some self-important conman and fraud that was a threat to their religious rule.

Jocelyn De Jersey is a finalist in the WIN photographic competition.

By Rev. Michael Connolly

Of course Pilate knew why. Verse 10 of Ch 15 says that the chief priests were angry with Jesus and Pilate knew that they were jealous of Jesus. The original Greek lingo there for “jealous” was the word “envious” but meant someone who was so envious that they would do all in their power, even murder, to get what the person they are envious of, have got. They were murderously envious of the Lord’s popularity and success with the people, and wanted him removed from the scene, permanently.

Pilate asked for a bowl of water and washed his hands in it, saying that he wanted nothing to do with the death of Jesus and he washed his hands of the whole affair. That saying is still used in our society today for example, when we want nothing to do with anything that goes against our conscience, our moral and ethical views. Or when we want to ease our conscience a bit because we did not take an honest stand on a matter. Jesus is truth.

SNAPSHOTS @ Mothers Day Walk / Run

SCOOP

The Newshound Sniffing out the stories about our four-legged friends...

WHAT an exciting Sunday morning I had last week! My Mum and I attended the third annual Mother’s Day Classic with around 80 other adults, children and dogs. There were so many new people and dogs to meet I’m afraid I got a bit carried away at first, but once I’d sniffed everyone I could I settled down for the walk. My K9 mum Crispy accompanied us and looked smashing in a bright pink tutu, while I was very proud to be wearing a pink bandana. Apparently the Mother’s Day Classic is a fun run/walk (every run/walk is fun if you ask me) to raise money for breast cancer research, and judging by the number of mums and dads running, walking and pushing those wonderful little humans around in funny buggy things with wheels this is a very good cause and I was proud to be a part of it. One of the event organisers, Bianca Graham told my Mum the event raised over $1600 for the national breast cancer research foundation, and also that the Premier of Queensland Campbell Newman was very impressed that Weipa held it’s own Mother’s Day Classic. Bianca also said: “This is the third year we have held the Mother’s Day Classic and it continues to be a great community event.

“I would like to thank all my volunteers: Siobhan, Kris, Maree, Shane, Mitch, Michi and Anna. For all three years they have helped out and made sure everyone was safe and enjoyed themselves. “Also the Weipa Police and Fire and Rescue who attended the event.” At the end of the walk my nose detected a bacon and egg barbecue breakfast but despite my best efforts to drag my Mum in that direction she insisted I jump back on the ute and have my usual breakfast of bony-ohs when we got home. I hear the NAIDOC organising committee raised $400 from the barbecue which was a great effort – even if I wasn’t allowed to contribute. Guess I’ll have to be content to walk on the beach or around the Lakes for another 12 months but I have a sneaking suspicion my humans are already working on a pink outfit for myself and Crispy for next year’s Mother’s Day Classic! – Scoop The Newshound

Stars  

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)

You may have to make a difficult decision. Make sure that you get your priorities sorted out first. The rest will come together. Romance. A chance meeting with a friend of the same sex this week could be significant. This could be the first step in meeting a very attractive new partner.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

Work which you did recently has impressed your boss. You will be rewarded, but not in the usual way! Accept what you can. Romance. You may find yourself taken in by a comment from your partner that was meant to mislead you. Make sure to get to the bottom of this matter.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd)

FOR KIDS

A friend has been holding you back recently. You will be much more successful without this person’s advice. Romance. A massive improvement in your love-life is just around the corner. While you’re waiting for this change to take place, take time to focus on your own needs.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd)

A somewhat over-enthusiastic approach will stand you in good stead this week. You may have to inject some more energy into the people around you. Romance. Time spent socialising with friends will not be wasted. Don’t miss an offer that won’t come again! Take down phone numbers!

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)

Be careful to look behind the façade. Things aren’t exactly as they seem. Unfortunately, the person presenting you with this offer is a close friend. Romance. A minor inconvenience mustn’t be taken seriously. Your partner is trying their best to please you, but is coming up short.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd)

FINDWORD No. 148 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

You need to be at the top of your performance at work this week. Take the weekend to prepare yourself. Romance. Stop analysing other people’s thoughts about your partner. They simply may not be seeing all of the great things about them that you are able to see. Defend them!

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)

Don’t expect opportunities to seek you out. You will have to take the initiative if you are to get what you are looking for. Be assertive! Romance. There is no need to try to impress your partner. Certainly, if they were not impressed with you they would have left you long ago!

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st)

For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au

MUDDY RIVER

You will be full of life. You will see so many opportunities in front of you that it may be difficult to know where to start. Choose one and go from there! Romance. Your partner may be feeling a little under the weather. Try to cheer them up with something they would not be able to afford.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th)

Don’t get into a confrontation with somebody in authority. You will be able to get what you want, but only if you choose a more subtle approach. Romance. What seems to you to be a casual flirtation could be very serious for the other person. Don’t flirt if you are not interested!

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

This is not the time to follow other people. You need to make your own decisions and take the initiative in getting what you want. Romance. Your love-life will be especially improved by your new take charge attitude. Allow yourself to make plans for a small getaway for the two of you.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Love is, above all else, the gift of oneself.

– Jean Anouilh

SOLUTIONS No. 148

A change in your circumstances may be more of a good thing than it seems at the time. Allow time for the benefits to reveal themselves. Romance. This will be a very rewarding time, both for you and your partner. Be selective with what you choose to do with your new status!

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th)

You will have a difficult time motivating your colleagues this week. Make sure you can follow through on your promises or they may lose confidence in you. Romance. Your partner may not trust you. Have you given them reason to doubt your loyalty? You need to confront them.

Cape York boys lead the way in Queensland Police Rugby League Championships  from page 1 “I used to play first grade rugby union in Brisbane,” Forbes said. The only fault in Forbes’ game was his failure to kick the ball over the sideline several times after Marlins penalties. Another Marlin with Weipa connections to shine was centre Stephen Tillett who was born on Palm Island and grew up in communities such as Weipa, Bamaga and Thursday Island. Lockhart River Snr Constable Matty Male also stood out, being tough and dangerous every time he touched the ball. Lockhart River Constable Al Taylor was a Marlins trainer at the carnival. Cape York was well represented in the Marlins side with Aurukun Constables Luke Russell and official and Liam Doherty a player.

Doherty was injured in training before the first game and could not participate. The Marlins defeated Mount Isa 44-nil in round two before losing 20-10 to South East Queensland 20-10 in a rain affected grand final on May 10. Tillett is a member of the ARL Commission’s Rugby League Indigenous Commission and was also a foundation squad member of the NQ Cowboys in 1995 and 96. He played reserve grade but never got a first grade call-up and along with other team members visited the Cowboys 1800Smiles Stadium during the Police carnival. Tillett was one of the prime movers behind the highly successful ‘Weed It Out’ project which has greatly reduced the use of Cannabis in the Torres Strait and Cape York which went from 2007 until June 2012.

WELL, it all kicks into action this Saturday night for the Weipa Dirt Kart Club. This is the first official race meeting for the year that counts towards the 2013 Club Championship and also marks just three meetings left until the running of the 2013 Queensland Dirt Kart Titles. It looks like our juniors drivers are taking things a little more seriously this year with new karts being driven by Rachel Brooker and Ben Batterham. These two will battle it out from the start but they better look out for Jasmine Hyytinen who is showing some good race pace lately and I reckon she is on the verge of an upset. In our adult classes, the racing will be even fiercer this year as they all start preparing for the Queensland title, with all drivers looking for that little edge to put them at the pointy end of the field. Newcomer Phil Lewis from Kowari Motors reckons he’s ready to go and shake it up with his more experienced rivals and will be a real force this year as his confidence builds. So there you have it, Saturday night is racing night so get your backside trackside. Racing starts at 7pm and the canteen will be open from 6.30pm but we will not be selling alcohol on the night. – Mowlesy

Kyle performs strongly at Brisbane tennis tournament DURING the recent school holidays Kyle Hunter played in one of the strongest Queensland junior tennis tournaments of the year, The Brisbane Age Open, at the Queensland Tennis Centre in Brisbane. He played in the 10 and under age group and after winning his first round in singles was quickly beaten by the top seed. His small stature was less a of a disadvantage in doubles, where he and his partner eventually finished fifth, winning all their matches after a very narrow third set tie-breaker defeat to the team that came third.

AFL wrap-up with Dallas GEELONG continue to impress and sit alone on top of the table. Yet to drop a game they are still the team to beat, now with a new bunch of talented youngsters being led around by their wily old warriors. They downed the Dons by 30, in the top-of-the-table clash to assert their authority over all in the early stages of the season. Richmond have found their feet again in a strong showing in Adelaide over a Port Power side beginning to show cracks now they have to face the tougher teams. Jack Riewoldt bagged five majors in a confidence builder that should see the Tiger’s season back on track after a few losses. West Coast had a good away win over the Lions in Brisbane and the media pressure is building with calls for Brisbane to sack coach Michael Voss. North Melbourne look to be upwardly mobile again after easily beating the Western Bulldogs. The Hawks steam-rolled the Swans in the grand-final replay and are rightfully entrenched in the top four. Fremantle had another solid performance despite injury woes, this time over Collingwood at Subiaco. Collingwood were below their best on this long road trip. The Crows not unexpectedly, smashed the Giants in Western Sydney by 135. Adelaide’s fill-in forward Tom Lynch snared a lazy 10 goals in this rout. Meanwhile, the Suns, even with a few key absences due to injury, added further woes to the dismal Demon’s season. Walloping Melbourne by 60, the fledgling Gold Coast achieved their first ever victory at the MCG. St Kilda led at every change to cause an upset over Carlton in a low-scoring Monday night match. Round eight bounces off Friday night with North Melbourne taking on West Coast in Perth. This could be a real entertainer with the likes of Nic Natanui and Majak Daw facing off and in full flight. Michael Voss doesn’t have his job prospects looking any brighter with the lowly Lions taking on Essendon under the roof at Etihad. Hawthorn should rack up a cricket score in Launceston over GWS if they decide not to rest their stars after Buddy was injured in this lop-sided clash last year. The Suns will be pumped up to make a record fourth win in a season over a struggling Bulldogs side at the Gold Coast. A big crowd will be out to watch the Cats take on Collingwood at the MCG. The Sydney Swans play the Dockers at the SCG and this could be a close and tough defensive game. Port Adelaide will be tested by an improved Carlton outfit in Melbourne. The Punt Road faithful will be out in force to watch Richmond decimate the Dees, who, are also in real financial strife to add to their on-field troubles. The Crows and Saints face off in the last game of the round.

NRL wrap-up with Karl Storm suffers second consecutive loss, giving the Rabbitohs the top of the table! Round nine kicked off with a clash of the giants in the Cowboys and the Rabbitohs, with the Rabbitohs proving to be too strong on the night. The other Friday night game between the Sharks and the Tigers, saw them get an easy win. Saturday’s games were close with the Bulldogs beating the luckless Warriors, and the Eels holding out the Broncos to get a victory. On Sunday, the Raiders continued their great form at home with an easy win over the Knights. The Titans snuck home against the Dragons, and the Panthers pulled the upset of the round over the Storm. Monday night’s game bought the round to a close with the Roosters continuing their fabulous form and beating the Sea Eagles. Round 10 will start on Friday with a Queensland derby between the Broncos and the Titans. Then the current leaders the Rabbitohs play against the injury plagued Tigers. Super Saturday has three games, with the Dragons playing the Eels, the Panthers verse the Warriors, and the Cowboys battle the Roosters. On Sunday we have the Sharks playing the in-form Raiders, and the Knights taking on the Bulldogs. The Monday night game is shaping to be another big game between the Storm and the Sea Eagles. In local news, this Saturday Weipa is hosting a trial match for the Northern/Central Cape Men’s team, that will compete in the Remote Area Challenge in Cairns on the 25th and 26th of May. Other teams taking part in the Remote Area Challenge are Torres Strait, Southern Cape, Three Rivers, Bowen, and Palm Island. From the weekend a Remote Area team will be picked to play against the Outback Team as a curtain raiser for the Northern Pride on June 29 in Cairns. Team spirit shines in local soccer matches ROUNd four saw huge improvements in skills and a massive effort by our Weipa soccer stars. Team spirit shone though with teams really working well together and we saw some very close matches resulting, once again, in two drawn games. The competition is fierce. Game of the week: Teens - Red vs Green Wow what a match. There were some great battles between these two impressive teams. The girls shone for the Green team - Isabella showed amazing speed

resulting in some excellent goals. Enid and Pheobe worked hard in defence and gave the Red team a run for their money. A big thank you to Nick and Zachi from the Green Team for lending a hand to the Red team and filling in for them - this shows fantastic sportsmanship. Cousins Caleb and Jess teamed up with Jaylen and Nick/Zachi for the Red team to have a fun and very closely contested match resulting in a fourall draw. Game results, Saturday, May 11 – Tykes: Red 4

Green 4 draw; Gold 2 def Blue 0. Teens: Red 4 Green 4 draw; Blue 5 def Gold 4. Titans: Red 7 def Blue 4. Next games, Saturday May 18 – 2.30pm Squirts: Gold vs White; Teens: Blue vs Green, Gold vs Red. 3.30pm Tykes: Blue vs Green, Gold vs Red; Titans: Blue vs Red. Next Saturday’s games are sure to be even more impressive - so parents, grandparents, carers and friends please come down and show your support to our soccerstars as it really makes the games fun and exciting. The Weipa Soccer

Club committee really appreciates any assistance so please offer your help or assist by helping to lead a game, especially in the Squirts and Tykes division. Coaching is Wednesday afternoons at the oval - Squirts/Tykes at 4pm and Teens/Titans at 5pm. A big thankyou to our coaches, referees and the very hard working committee. Only two games remaining until finals - so give it your best effort and good luck to all players.

Adrenaline pumps at BMX sign-on night Weipa BMX Club are gearing up for another great season of BMX racing with their annual sign-on day held last Friday, May 10 when plenty of riders and their families returned to the track for their first hit of weekly adrenaline-filled family fun. BMX enthusiasts are still able to sign-up but will need to join or renew their membership with BMX Australia online before coming to the track by going to www. bmxaustralia.com.au and following the link to online memberships. It is a simple process and should only take about five minutes. Previous members should have received a login number, but if you have lost it you can call the club treasurer Robyn on 0427 697 741. The track has recently undergone annual maintenance and we would like to thank all those members who donated their time, their sweat, their rakes and their 4WDs to getting the track in pristine condition. During the off-season the shed underwent an internal facelift due

in large part to the hard work and organisation of our illustrious leader, Steve Lugsdin. The kitchen has been overhauled and now sports new kitchen benches, cupboards, lined walls, new flooring and looks brilliant. The kitchen now reflects the awesome quality burgers that come out of it! We’d like to give a big thank you to the following business for their support in upgrading the shed and supporting us through the annual track overhaul. • NQCEC for donating the kitchen and machinery • Goodline for the use of machinery • Slade Painters Weipa for the painting • Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa for labour • Weipa Bobcat & Tipper Hire (machinery) • Bluedon Flooring • Weipa Town Authority for a $2000 grant to go towards the flooring BMX racing starts this Friday, May 17, 6pm for registration and 7pm the action starts. Send your fishing photos to: brettchina@me.com THE sou’easters just keep on blowing, keeping most anglers in the estuaries, but there was the odd occasion that you could get out and Chris from Tackle World Charters took a crew out and they got amongst the Spanish Mackerel. A point of warning though, while taking a photo of one of the fish it slipped from the client’s grasp and its mouth hit Chris in the leg and it required stitching. Dead or alive, the teeth of the Mackerel are dangerous. Another boat that made it offshore was Screamin’ Seaman and the boys got some goodsized Tuskies. They lost a few to Sharks and then the wind forced them in close, where they landed some nice Fingermark. There are heaps of Mackerel on the Nine Mile Reef, but watch the wind. Dave Donald fished this week with his godson from Yeppoon, Drew Pearson and his mate Greg Exeter. The boys had a fantastic four days landing 31 different species all on lures. Although the wind was strong most of the time, the boy’s managed to get out on some of the wider reef patches, using Gulp soft plastics landing some quality Fingermark and Gold Spot Cod, plus a couple of Spaniards on metal slices. Fishing in the rivers for a couple of days there were plenty of small Barra about plus some very nice Mangrove Jacks in their daily tally of 50-plus fish.

The Mission River has had some very good Prawns on the flats and small Barra and Blue Salmon are feeding on them. Over at the bridge the Barra are taking live Mullet with some of them getting up to the high 70s. There are small Prawns around here as well and they are very tasty or make great baits. The Pine River has a lot of Barra and Jacks taking lures and the Jacks are of a good size, but take care on the trip back as the wind can be a problem. In the Embley and Hey system there are plenty of small Barra taking live bait and lures. I fished one of the creeks of the Hey and scored my first Threadfin Salmon on a

Dave with a hefty black spot cod taken last week on a soft vibe lure.

There are still seats available for the pre Weipa Fishing Challenge Sportfishing Workshop run by local guide and outdoor writer, Dave Donald, next Sunday, May 19 at the Council Chambers. Dave has spent much of the past month working in local waters so he knows where, when and how to find a few fish around the traps, and is ready to pass on some of the finer points just in time for this years Challenge.

The workshop will look at all aspects of fishing locally including how to ‘balance’ your fishing tackle; how to tie knots in both nylon and braid; some tips on how to throw a cast net and what types to buy; a hands-on session tying doubles, leaders and hooks; an in-depth look at local species and how to catch them; a session that looks at the different types of lures and how to use them, with a focus on how to rig soft plastics; tips on trolling for Spanish

Mackerel and other Pelagic species - and much more. Participants are encouraged to bring along their favourite rod and reel so that Dave can offer some personal hints as to how to ‘tune’ the outfit for better performance. He even reckons he might be persuaded to give away a couple of his ‘secret’ spots to those hoping to bag a species trophy at the Fishing Challenge. Each person attending will received a small sample bag

including line, scissors, soft plastic lures and other goodies. There will also be plenty of lures and line to be given away during the day. The Sportfishing Workshop, is on this Sunday, May 19 8.30am for 8.45am start, Council Chambers (behind the Library), morning tea and lunch provided, cost $60 adult, $45 student under 17yrs, book at Weipa Bait & Tackle, more info phone Dave Donald (0427 699 064).
