Prisoners to work preparing Garma site By MATT GARRICK A group of 30 Northern Territory prisoners will soon be chosen to assist in preparing the site for August’s Garma Festival - 40km from Nhulunbuy. The prisoners picked to be involved in the scheme - a partnership between the Yothu Yindi Foundation and the NT Department of Correctional Services will have proven their good behaviour while incarcerated in low security jails. Guarded by four prison officers, the men will undertake labour work such as removing white-ant damaged trees and snakes from the site, setting up the so-called ‘Tent City’, cleaning up and supplying firewood to nearby communities. General Manager of Yothu Yindi Foundation Denise Bowden said the prisoners would be working alongside the rest of the predominantly female Garma crew responsible for getting the event ready. “We’ll bring them in a month prior to Garma and house them, then they build Garma the City - the festival site - along with the rest of the crew.” She said once the festival had started, the prisoners would also take part in recreational aspects of Garma; including education and employment programs held during the three-day event. “We don’t just put them in the cupboard and pack them away - this is about helping them start to reintegrate. “Plus, it’s a bonding session for them.” The group will be most likely comprised of prisoners of different races from across the NT. “The visit is so appealing to prisoners; to be out in the open, under the stars. “Especially as there will be in-

digenous people involved who have connections to the land near Garma,” Ms Bowden said. The program has been on trial for the past two years, but this year there are plans to solidify a longer-term agreement for it to continue. Ms Bowden said Yothu Yindi Foundation would be signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Correctional Services at Garma this year, so the prison program could continue for a further three years. “For us it’s really productive partnership; to have their manpower is a real benefit to us, and for the prisoners to have so much space, and to be able to spend evenings around a fire under the stars, it’s almost priceless.” Minister for Correctional Services John Elferink said the work party would teach prisoners important workrelated disciplines as well as providing valuable community support. “Prisoners also receive training in the use of a range of small tools and equipment, making them more employable once they are released back into the community. “They acquire practical skills to enable them to get a job outside of prison, and it is hoped they use these for positive change rather than returning to crime and alcohol and drug abuse. “Last year, the work parties proved extremely beneficial to the community with prisoners completing more than $3.5 million in projects and contributing almost 250,000 hours of labour.” Mr Elferink said along with Garma, the work parties would this year assist with a range of community events including the Finke River Desert Race, Hidden Valley Drags and V8 events and the Henley on Todd Regatta.

THE region’s Navy Cadets program - a pathway for young adults to gain knowledge and skills into the defence forces - will be cut if more volunteers and cadets cannot be found to take part. A meeting was held in Gove last Saturday, where it was revealed the organisation needs at least double the number of cadets already enrolled for the program to remain viable in the region. Flotilla Commander Gill McKay, who oversees the Navy Cadets programs in place between Nhulunbuy and Broome, said more community assistance and interest was needed to keep the program afloat. Currently 10 cadets are enrolled in the program, which Ms McKay said needs to double to twenty to prevent the unit from closing. “There is need for this unit in Gove. “But we now need to grow the unit and integrate it a bit more into the community.” The cadets have for the last years been at the forefront in annual defence force commemoration events such as Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, which Ms McKay said were pivotal to the region.

“I’ve been involved with TS Melville Bay since its inception in 1992, and for a number of years we had from 35 to 40 young people here on a weekly basis. “It’s a doable proposition, there are youngsters out there who could get involved.” The Navy Cadets have recently proved as a successful pathway into the defence forces. 18-year-old Gove cadet Lindsay Wollin - who lead the cadets in their role at the region’s Anzac Day ceremony - signed up to the program in 2008, and is now preparing to join the Australian Army Reserves with a long-term view to joining the Army. Ms McKay said cadets were taught life skills and how to be good community citizens. “We teach them how to give back, leadership and give them confidence, and all those sort of things they can take out of the community and to anywhere in the country.” To get involved with the program, either as an adult volunteer leader or a cadet - those 12-20 years old - contact TS Melville Bay Commanding Officer Grahame Deppeler (0439 033 688). Navy Cadets meet every Tuesday from 6-9pm.

YIRRKALA residents will soon be able to access the resources and the benefits of the world wide web at a new digital learning centre. The Federal Government have announced that Yirrkala Art Centre (Buku Larrnggay Mulka) will receive $460,000 for the development of a multi-terminal digital learning centre. Member for Lingiari Warren Snowdon said this project would allow the local community to participate in digital and IT training and to access a digital library and cultural archive. “This centre is vital to the community because it provides the only public internet access available to the community.” “Increased access to the internet in the community will create an environment conducive to online consultation, education and employment. “This will have social and economic benefits for the Yolngu community.” Minister for Regional Services Catherine King said the project would deliver employment benefits to the region, creating 10 jobs throughout the project’s construction and sustaining a further two after its completion. “This project means jobs for the local economy now and lasting benefits for the community over the longer term.” The project is expected to be completed by mid 2015.

A NHULUNBUY man has scored a gong in the Northern Territory’s Volunteer of the Year Awards, for his dedicated services in supplying isolated youths with constructive activities. Donald McKinnon took home the Chief Minister’s Medal for Volunteering Service on May 16. Mr McKinnon has volunteered for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for 26 years. During this time, he has worked with and mentored over 500 young people in Nhulunbuy, regularly volunteering between 16-18 hours a month. Over the years, Mr McKinnon has increased participation to record numbers to the Duke’s program and enabled it to be accessed in remote regions by isolated youth in great need of

stimulating activities. Chief Minister Adam Giles said the awards celebrated and rewarded the valuable work volunteers contributed to their communities. “Each year thousands of Territorians give up their time to help others,” Mr Giles said. “Volunteers play an important role in the community and are the mainstays of support within many sporting and community organisations.” “The level of volunteering in the Territory is high, with 38 per cent of people volunteering in a formal capacity.” The awards continue to grow with 68 nominations received, 14 more than last year. The winners of the Chief Minister’s Medals each received $2500 to donate to a not-for-profit organisation of their choice.

YBE puts hand-up for pipeline work THE Gas-to-Gove pipeline project has the potential to bring boosts to the region’s job sector; and local company Yolngu Business Enterprises (YBE) wants to be part of the conversation. YBE Chief Executive Officer Glenn Aitchison said at this stage in the planning of the project, conversations taking place have been behind closed doors. “We fully understand and appreciate the nature of confidentiality around the initial discussions. “However, when the time comes for opportunities to talk about joint ventures, we would dearly love to be part of that conversation. “We believe we have a fully integrated system of training, education, safety and production performance, which will be beneficial to the project.” A spokesman from Pacific Aluminium said although the pipeline project was still in early days, there were

plans in place to try and maximise the amount of contracts which will be available to tender by local businesses. “That’s something that we’d be seeking to do, but we’re still in the process of development,” the spokesman said. Mr Aitchison said a main focus of the project should be on future proofing Gove’s local economy. “It should be about trying to stop the economic leakage from the region. “Every time we bring in someone else from outside or another state to get a contract here, the money leaves our region.” YBE is a privately run business, which employs approximately 100 people, a third of whom are indigenous. Pacific Aluminium have said they are pushing

Last week, the company awarded a major contract to local company Bunuwal Fuel - a joint venture between Bunuwal Investments and Cambridge Gulf Limited- to supply fuel to the mining business and to the community.

Brenden Marchesi High Voltage Supervisor - Town Ph 8987 5242 PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE: NT Health Minister Robyn Lambley and Director of Medical Services at Gove Hospital, Dr Peter Chilcott, last month. PLANNING for works on a new Emergency Department at Gove District Hospital is taking shape, with the scope of the new facility now finalised and the construction tender to be issued within months. Health Minister Robyn Lambley says the $13 million Emergency Department project will be a major boost to the delivery of health services in one of the Territory’s largest population centres. “The communities around Gove deserve to have this significant new piece of health infrastructure,” Mrs Lambley said. “About 5000 people live in Nhulunbuy and another 9000 live in the East Arnhem region stretching from Ramingining to the west and Numbulwar in the south.” Financed by the Commonwealth’s Health and Hospitals Fund and built by the Territory Government, Mrs Lambley said the new Emergency Department will benefit patients and staff. “The new Emergency Department will be designed to improve efficiencies and the delivery of emergency care to assist the hospital to manage future increases in demand.”

“It will have seven patient bays compared to the current four bays, critical care and resuscitation bays, reception and triage area, patient isolation room and secure care assessment room. “There will also be patient and staff amenities and administration areas. “The Department will be a single storey building, linked to existing ward areas which will be an enormous boost to medical staff that deserve a state-of the-art facility. “As far back as the 1960s, the current Emergency Department was the original Gove Hospital building. “While the old Emergency Department has provided excellent service over many years, the Country Liberals Government is proud to be value adding health infrastructure for the Gove community.” The construction tender process for the new facility is expected to begin later this year and it will be operating by early 2015. The NT Budget for 2013 has also allocated $465,000 for construction of a new pediatric ensuite at the Hospital.

Gillard and Gurrumul invited to Gove PRIME Minister Julia Gillard has been invited to the region for NAIDOC Week this July, to take part in celebrations for the fiftieth anniversary of Yirrkala’s Bark Petitions. It is expected that during her proposed visit she will formally open the new wing of Yirrkala Art Centre (Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre). Also set to take part in the celebrations will be Gurrumul, who media have reported will play a special concert for the Prime Minister and an audience that will include two of the original signatories of the Bark Petition. NAIDOC Week, to be held from July 7-14, is an annual nation-wide celebration of Australia’s indigenous

culture and heritage. This year the event’s theme will be; We value the vision: Yirrkala Bark Petitions 1963. The event will commemorate fifty years since the birth of land rights in Australia, when 13 Yolngu clan leaders signed a pair of bark painting and sent them to the Australian Parliament in protest of the establishment of the bauxite mine in Gove. It is also expected Ms Gillard will take time to visit the Yirrkala Church Panels which are housed in BukuLarrnggay Mulka, which the centre’s coordinator Will Stubbs said are the equivalent to Australia’s Magna Carta; an ancient English document representing the country’s birth of democracy.

Its aim was to provide additional skills and confidence to those most likely to be first on the scene with a patient, to help them deal with the emergency until the arrival of services such as St John paramedics, clinic nurses or CareFlight. Careflight founding director Ian Badham said the quality of the initial treatment which patients receive helps ensure their quick recovery. “When CareFlight ran the MediSim course last year in Gove, two participants were from Gapuwiyak and they suggested a course should be held there this year - which is what was delivered. “They certainly made our CareFlight team feel very welcome,” Mr Badham said.

Offender, victim and witness all arrested after assault POLICE were aghast last week after an alleged assault offender, his victim and a witness to the crime were all arrested on outstanding warrants after being brought into Nhulunbuy station for questioning. A 41-year-old man from Ramingining was arrested and charged after he allegedly assaulted a security guard outside the Walkabout Hotel. He then crossed the road to near Nhulunbuy’s taxi rank, where it has been alleged he severely assaulted his wife. Police arrested the man following the incident, and charged him with assault on a person who suffered harm, aggravated assault and breaching bail. After he was arrested, it was also discovered that he was wanted by police on five outstanding warrants. The man was remanded in custody to appear in Darwin Magistrate’s Court. Police said when they brought the victim and a witness into the station the following day to be questioned in relation to the crime, they were disappointed to learn that both were wanted on outstanding warrants as well. The pair were arrested and bailed to appear

in Maningrida Magistrates Court on June 4. LICENCE AND REGISTRATION PLEASE POLICE have been increasing their efforts in clamping down on unregistered vehicles and other traffic offences over the last week, with 14 infringements handed out and two people summonsed to appear in court. The majority of tickets were for speeding, and three for driving unregistered vehicles. Police said monitoring breaches of transport laws was one of their core duties in the region, and they would continue to remain vigilant in spotting offenders. Four non-traffic related infringements were also handed out, to individuals caught causing a disturbance in or around the region’s licensed venues. Alcohol was said to be involved in each of these incidents.

Rotary reaches out to our East Timor neighbours

Rotary helping paint a primary school in Dili.

IT’S fair to say the Rotary Club of Nhulunbuy are well-known for putting their hands in their pockets and helping out organisations and events around the community. But their efforts don’t stop in East Arnhem Land...or even in Australia. Representatives from our local Rotary Club returned to town last week from East Timor, where they had travelled to take part in a district Rotary meeting, and to search for charity causes suitable for our local branch to support. Rotary committee member Sean ‘Ocker’ O’Connor, who took part in the trip, said there was no shortage of worthy causes over there, as East Timor is still awash with poverty.

“We found two or three such possible projects. “One involved piping and getting flowing water into a village which suffers from a lack of fresh water.” Mr O’Connor said Nhulunbuy Rotary have wanted do something for their greater Rotary District, which takes in the Northern Territory and East Timor - the third largest Rotary district in the world. Having taken trips to East Timor as a member of the military involved in border protection in 1999-2000, and again in a business context in 2010 - when he visited the region to train East Timorese people to be ready go out on gas rigs - Mr O’Connor was ready for what lay before him. “I’m impressed with the advances there,

but there’s still a hell of a long way to go. “I still have concerns over the general health and well-being and education of the youth. “Hence the reason we were in there; looking at schools and projects we can put our money into and help out with.” Prior to their visit to the independent nation, Rotary had been holding fundraising activities in Gove to help get a kindergarten up and running; the construction site of which the crew had a chance to visit while in the country. Nhulunbuy Rotary are always looking for new members, so to get involved phone Club Secretary Stephanie Freeman (0400 172 599) or Sean O’Connor (0488 141 435).

Like father like daughter on plans to deliver drinking water NHULUNBUY Christian College student Serina O’Connor should be applauded for her initiative. While her father Sean ‘Ocker’ O’Connor was over in East Timor, researching possible charities to help funnel fresh water into a tiny Timorese village (see story on page 5),

his daughter in Year 7 was conducting a safe water project of her own. After her class was given the task by their teacher to make as much awareness as possible about unsafe water around the world, Serina chose to utilise the power of print media. She sent a message through to the Arafura

Times, asking us to come have a chat down at NCC. “Lots of people die each day in Africa, Asia and countries in poverty because of this. “There are not-for-profit organisations such as the Thankyou water charity, where if you buy a bottle of their water the funds go to

helping a country receive clean water.” Serina said when she gets older it’s one of her goals to travel to Africa and help underprivileged kids in orphanages. For now though, the Arafura Times reckons she should get full marks for her project’s top marketing strategy.

months, they’ve announced work will begin on strengthening, widening and straightening sections of Central Arnhem Road. In the same time period, they’re planning to construct new concrete bridges over the Goyder and Donydji rivers. The Feds have also allocated cash to be splashed on the road systems of greater Arnhem Land, with $90 million worth of works expected to begin in 2014-15. This plan includes work on the Roper Highway, Port Keats Road, Rocky Bottom Creek on Central Arnhem Road and the Arnhem Link Road. They’ve also promised $20m to strengthen and widen the Arnhem Highway between the Stuart Highway and Jabiru. Federal Minister for Infrastructure Anthony Albanese said the Government knows there’s more to be done. “But this Government is making the right decisions for the nation’s future and across the length and breadth of the Northern Territory, building the infrastructure which will stand the test of time.” Whether the bridges stand the test of time or not; judging by recent polls predicting the results of the September election, the same can’t be assured for the current Federal Government.

Budget better spent on those who really appreciate $$ WHAT a big week it has been for Australia and for once, I’m not talking sport. Not much of interest has been happening in sport, apart from a cycling Aussie climbing improbable mountains in Italy. For once, the important stuff has been happening in Parliament as we chew over the Government’s budget. The Government thinks Australia is not doing so very badly, although cash is tight and there will have to be some cutbacks. The Opposition, who live in the mirror Australia somewhere on Mars, are horrified by the wreckage of our once proud nation and don’t fancy the chances of us ever being able to afford a loaf of bread again. Unless we are smart enough to vote for Tony Ears in September, who will make everything better again. Pretty dull stuff, unless you listened carefully to Tony’s speech. Did you notice the cultural sensitivity

The

Eye f the

o Cyclone he displayed? It brought a proud glow to my heart. Everyone understands that in our multi-cultural nation, we must behave with consideration to other people’s deepest beliefs and history, and didn’t Tony display that wonderfully? He recognises that, for some people, money is not simply numbers in a bank account but a fundamental part of their make-up. He recognises that a dollar means totally different things in the hands of different cultural groups. There are some people for whom a

dollar is at the core of their being. They have been brought up in households that really understand money in large quantities, and it hurts them deeply if anyone treats it with disrespect. For others, it is simply something to spend on beer or cigarettes. Tony understands that taking dollars from the first group is culturally insensitive. On the other hand, the other people don’t care about money and don’t mind sharing it with the tax man. Tony understands about superannuation too. He told us that if a poor person is given the chance to save for the future, or take a superannuation dollar now, that poor person will always choose cash in his hand. Far better not to worry about super for people like that, and keep it to assist people who really appreciate it.

‘Terrible’ Territory budget delivers more pain THE Territory budget handed down in parliament last week was described as “terrible” by Treasurer Dave Tollner, with ongoing pain to be delivered to Territorians through cuts to services and jobs, especially in health and education, while the cost of living continues to increase. For the north east Arnhem region, there is nothing new on offer. The capital works program for infrastructure will deliver projects which are predominantly federally funded and had been flagged in previous budgets, including the $13 million for the Gove Hospital emergency department upgrade plus $6 million for a new primary health clinic at Galiwin’ku (Elcho Island). Health funding to the region has actually declined with a cut of $7 million to acute and non-acute services. Add to that the CLPs decision to return $5.3 million to the federal government which would have delivered a medi-hostel on the campus of GDH for patients travel-

ling in for health care. And for any of us who have had to accompany a sick child to the RDH children’s ward, Labor’s plans Electoral News to build a new by NT Member for Nhulunbuy kids ward has LYNNE WALKER been scrapped and that money also returned to the federal government. Further, the government’s decision to take the new and as yet unopened $18 million medi-hostel on the grounds of Royal Darwin Hospital and turn it into a lock-up facility for problem drinkers tells us two things. First, unlike the federal and Territory Labor governments, the CLP don’t see a need for accessible affordable accommodation for people from the bush, indigenous

and non-indigenous. Second, they seem to think forcing people into mandatory rehabilitation (at a cost of $45 million in the 2013 budget) will actually work in the face of overwhelming expert and stakeholder advice which says it simply won’t work. Health aside, the 10 per cent cuts to education announced in the December mini budget continue. The budget confirms that 130 teacher positions will be cut across the Territory and with the announcement of a new student teacher ratio in secondary schools, Nhulunbuy High will have larger classes and fewer teachers. To add insult to injury, the Treasurer’s office has confirmed that there will be no budget roadshow presentations around the regions, no opportunity to attend a presentation and hear first hand from the Treasurer and ask questions unless you live in Darwin or Alice Springs. Listening to and supporting people in the bush? Not this government.

beginning and end of each day. Nhulunbuy Primary School and Nhulunbuy Christian College are getting involved this year, with principals, teachers, parents and carers walking with their little ones to show just how fun feeling fit from a morning stroll can be. For the first time ever, kids can build up excitement for the day by checking out a new Walk Safely to School Day App for Apple and Android phones. The App will allow children and parents/carers to track their kilometres travelled to and from school, their time spent walking, their average walking speed in the lead up to the day and beyond. Those interested can get the free App in the App store, or from www.walk.com.au. The national event also promotes reduced cardependency, cleaner air, improved diets and road safety to primary school children throughout Australia.

THERE’S few better ways to spend a Saturday arvo than relaxing with a few mates at one of the region’s ovals to watch the GFL. Which was exactly how plenty of locals from the region enjoyed last weekend, when Saints battled Gopu and Djarrak took on Nguykal at Yirrkala’s Oval. The last game ended right on a spectacular sunset, and most of the crowd went away smiling. All the footy results and action on page 19.

ALTHOUGH most of the action for the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest was happening far away in Sweden, a bad-taste buzz was felt at Gove’s own Eurovision Party on Sunday night. Guests dressed in drag or wigged-out to watch the television for the silly anecdotes of the dozens of weird countries performing lamentable techno anthems in big dresses and stiff suits. Denmark walked away with the crown on the day, leaving a bunch of former war-torn nations to be disappointed until the festivities return next year. Alex Bowen and Ali Thorn wiggin’ out.

ENGINES roared and dust filled the air when riders hit the red dirt for Nhulunbuy Motorcycle Club’s Laynhapuy Aviation Enduro last Sunday morning. While the senior riders battled it out on the main track, to try and win a share of the $600 of prizes up for grabs, Juniors, and even the Junior-juniors, went hell for leather on the other track, getting air off jumps and honing their skills. A barbecue kept the spectators in good spirits, and a dash of rain cooled the riders down. Results of the Enduro in next week’s edition of Arafura Times.

The Arnhem Land girls were boarders at Shalom College in Townsville, and were from Numbulwar, Elcho Island and Milingimbi. Utility player Chimika Ganambarr from Elcho Island was a real star in the game, a highlight of which was her having more than a liberal sprinkling of sportsmanship, or perhaps that should be sportsGIRLship. One instance was seeing opponents marking each other with their arms around each other and laughing after the play

Dave flies solo into Gove on a wing and a chair Dave Jacka during his day-off in Gove.

Dramatic landscape scenery during pilot Dave Jacka’s landmark flight as the first quadriplegic person to fly solo around Australia.

Former Parolympian Dave Jacka has touched down in Gove last week - midway in becoming the world’s first person with quadriplegia to fly solo around Australia, writes Matt Garrick. SOME people have trouble getting out of bed in the morning after their alarm’s gone off. For Dave Jacka, a complete quadriplegic, it can sometimes take him a couple of hours to get out of bed, and that’s when being helped by a carer. But when he’s up, he’s really up - flying solo around Australia in a specially engineered plane that he designed, which caters for his limited mobility. The remarkable Mr Jacka is a former Paralympian, and great-grandson of Albert Jacka, the first Victoria Cross recipient. He is also now well underway in becoming the first quadriplegic person to have flown around Australia. This all to drive his charity, named Wing and a Chair; a not for profit, volunteer driven organisation that aims to challenge the limits of disability. Stopping off for a rest day in Gove last Wednesday May 15, he talked of how the trip’s

been anything but easy. “There have been lots of challenges along the way, such as weather conditions and fatigue.” His trip started down in chilly Melbourne, where he hails from, before winding around Tasmania then up the east coast, across Cape York and the Gulf of Carpentaria, until touching down on what he described as the “lush and unique” landscape of east Arnhem Land. Mr Jacka has spent the last 25 years of his life in a wheelchair, after breaking his neck in a motorbike accident when he was 19. Since then, he has been busy proving the sceptics wrong, and raising public expectations of what disabled people are capable of. When he first decided he wanted to take lessons to learn to fly, he was told it wouldn’t be possible, because he couldn’t use the controls. Dave wasn’t to be stopped. He redesigned the controls and had them approved by the authorities so he could fly the plane.

Gurrumul book out

A new book has been released delving into the life and music of Gurrumul. Photo courtesy: Adrian Cook Photography. A NEW book has been released providing rare and otherwise unpublished insight into one of the most famous and intriguing identities of East Arnhem Land. Gurrumul: His Life and Music documents in words, pictures and song the story of one of Australia’s most original performers; Geoffery Gurrumul Yunupingu. Part road-trip and part biography, awardwinning biographer Robert Hillman takes readers from the world’s great concert halls and recording studios and into Yolngu heartland - to reveal the story and inspirations behind Gurrumul’s international success and fame. The book tells of how three people - the former drummer from Yothu Yindi, a double-bass

player from Melbourne, and a wool classer from everywhere - met on Elcho Island in 1996 and combined talents to reveal an astonishing musical gift that has left audiences across the world spellbound. The story is told through lyrics, interviews with family, friends and fellow musicians, and anecdotes from Mr Hillman’s time spent on the road with Gurrumul himself. It features previously unpublished images from Gurrumul’s childhood and of the man taken by some of the world’s best rock photographers. Galiwin’ku’s Gurrumul has achieved levels of fame in his musical career equaling Australia’s most popular musicians; he has performed for Queen Elizabeth II, US President Barack Obama, Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary of Denmark, and was one of only three Australian performers at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert. Legendary performers such as Elton John and Sting are among his fans. Rumour has it that East Arnhem Land fans may get a chance to catch Gurrumul performing in the region sometime in NAIDOC Week, from July 7 to 14. His book is available now through ABC Books.

“I have a mission to provide inspiration, and to send a message to everyone - whether they have a disability or not - to get out there and achieve all the dreams they have in life.” Accompanied by his biggest fan, his wife Linda, Mr Jacka is a vehement believer that one should never judge a book by its cover. “He’s the most capable person I’ve ever met in my life,” Linda said. She also mentioned his passion and inspirational mission were the reasons she agreed to take this trip around the country. “I’m not a particularly big fan of flying,” she laughed. Two additional planes carrying six support staff stay within a five to ten kilometre radius of Dave’s own throughout the 16,000km journey, in case any trouble occurs, and to be there ready for when Dave touches down at the end of each day. When the crew hit Gove soil last week, Dave said he was treated with true local hospitality.

“The guys from Pacific Aluminium have been really good to us, supplying us with accommodation and food. “And I must say, they’ve really got good facilities and rooms for disabled people.” Dave’s inspirational journey continued onwards to Darwin the next day, where he planned to rest and prepare for the next chapter; flying off towards the Western Australian coast. He plans to reach his finish point, back home in Melbourne, by early June, but said one never knows what trouble might be encountered which could cause a delay. “If someone gets sick, or if there’s a problem with one of the planes, then it may take longer than we planned.” One expects that whatever the troubles may be, however bad, Dave won’t let them stop him. Yothu Yindi to reunite for NIMAs LEGENDARY Yirrkala rockers Yothu Yindi will reunite for a performance and to be celebrated at the 2013 National Indigenous Music Awards (NIMA) concert in Darwin. Their songs will also be performed on the night by some of the country’s top indigenous acts. In 2012, the ARIAs recognised Yothu Yindi for their groundbreaking contribution to Australian music and inducted the band into the ARIA Hall of Fame. A special performance featuring Gurrumul, Dan Sultan, Jessica Mauboy, Peter Garrett and Paul Kelly was a highlight of this ceremony. This year, the National Indigenous Music Awards dedicate the event to the musical legacy of Yothu Yindi with a concert featuring some of the country’s top musicians paying tribute at the Darwin Amphitheatre on Saturday August 10, covering the band’s greatest and most recognised songs. To launch this concept concert, the NIMAs last week brought together Rrawun Maymuru - the grandson of Mandawuy Yunupingu and lead singer of East Journey - soul-father Kutcha Edwards and the country’s most outstanding didjeridu player William Barton for a special showcase at Melbourne’s Art Centre. Yothu Yindi’s lead singer Mandawuy Yunupingu said his heart was full of joy. “I am so happy to see that in my lifetime Indigenous music has come such a long way. “And to have these talented artists come together to honour the groundbreaking work of Yothu Yindi makes me proud beyond words.” While most of the line-up will be announced mid June, it has been revealed that original members of the Yothu Yindi line-up will perform.

Lead singer of East Journey Rrawun Maymuru will perform in the tribute to Yothu Yindi at the National Indigenous Music Awards in August. Several artists will step into the shoes of Mandawuy Yunupingu, including grandson Rrawun Maymuru, lead singer of Yirrkala’s East Journey. Manager of Music NT, the presenters of NIMA, Mark Smith said it was a very exciting time with so many indigenous artists doing so well. “With so many artists across the country we look forward to an amazing celebration of Yothu Yindi and the band’s legacy.”. Head online to nima.musicnt.com.au to nominate for acts for the national categories of Act, Album, Song, New Talent of the Year, Film Clip and Cover Art of the Year. Nominations close on June 15.

Gangan style

WITH a population of around 80, the remote community of Gangan is today seen as one of the notable success stories of the Homelands movement. The community was set up proper in the 1970s by local elders, as part of the movement to bring Yolngu people back to their country. One such elder, although having his body nearly crippled by leprosy in the 1960s, still managed to build an airstrip out in the wilderness

with a shovel and an axe. Today, Gangan is a wellkept, friendly community featuring a school with good student attendance rates. Chief Minister Adam Giles visited Gangan earlier this month, where he said it was fantastic to see all the kids going to school. “We want to have the right programs and policies in place to support people who want to live out here, so that the children here can continue to get good

education, better living and better housing opportunities for the future,” Mr Giles said. Gangan is also home to a number of famous and revered Yolngu artists, including Telstra Art Award winner Djirrirra Wunungmurra, who won the 2012 Bark Painting of the Year. Here are a few photos of the fun and uniqueness of Gangan, taken by the Arafura Times.

Meet Shimmer. After being abandoned by her last owner, she is now looking for her forever home. She is very affectionate and loves to chat and follow you around for a cuddle. Being an older cat she is litter trained and not super active, loving to lounge around close by. She comes de-sexed, wormed and in good

FOOTY TIPPING

Pleb joint leader for AFL

Arafura Times

Trio of tipsters lead for NRL

Two tipsters score perfectly

Upsets undermine AFL tipsters

ONLY two tipsters had a perfect score after seven of the eight games in round 10 of Arafura Times/Arnhem Club NRL footy tipping competition on the weekend. Kaffir and Forbesy had seven from seven, with the Monday night fixture between the Storm and the Sea Eagles not completed at the time the Arafura Times went to press. Killer, Wayno and Marlinman scored six before crashing along with the Bulldogs in their loss to the Knights. On five were Jez, Halwes, Malkzok1, Joseph Benn, Luke Cole, Shaun Dennis, doodlesuckernobagch and Andres Hoffman all bombed out with the Knights’ win, while Travis Dehnert, Graham Hughes, KaRon1, broccoli, Tracey xxxx rose to five on the back of the Knights’ victory. Marlinman and Kaffir have joined Andres Hoffman with 59 to share the lead.

TIPSTERS had a difficult time on the weekend with significant upsets in round eight of the Arafura Times/ Arnhem Club AFL footy tipping competition on the weekend. In fact, so telling were the results, no one got all nine correct, nor did anyone get eight. The best result was seven, shared by 19 tipsters. No one chose the Lions to upset the Bombers, while only three - Darren Nunn, reverend and Woodsgal - nominated the Magpies to down the previously unbeaten Cats. The Suns’ win against the Bulldogs also upset tipsters’ forecasts. Those with seven were pleb, Darren Nunn, renae forbes, Kaffir, hayden4x, Maggie May, 43, Spudly, crackers, Rose Becker, KaRon1, David Gibson, dixienormus, Dobbo, crocbait, Agron, Travis

The trio has a two-win break ahead of Malkzok1, Wayno and doodlecuckernochc. Tanya Hoffman sits on 56. Shaun Dennis occupies 55, with waggy and Luke Cole on 54. Killer, Graham Hughes and Duggie are on 53. 52: Jez, VanDam, Putty, Halwes, KaRon1. 51: Joseph Benn, broccoli. 50: Jeremy 4X, grimmus8u. The winner of the Arafura Times/ Arnhem Club NRL tipping competition wins $500.

Nguykal downs Djarrak in spirited local derby

VICTORIOUS: Nguykal with a few of their young fans after their 19 point win over Djarrak. Teams Djarrak and Nguykal were neck-

Gove Junior Golf Clinic 2013.

DESPITE continual downpours of rain, the Gove Country Golf Club Junior Golf weekend Clinic and GolfNT schools visits went ahead on May 17 and 19. PGA Member Tony Albon travelled from Darwin and enjoyed introducing the basics of golf chipping and putting to a total 52 students from Nhulunbuy High School, Nhulunbuy Primary School, Yirrkala School and Nhulunbuy Christian College. Mr Albon said the Yirrkala School children showed great enthusiasm in learning something new and were keen for a follow-up visit next time. In the afternoon, Tony met with 19 junior golfers from the Gove Club who spent their time refining their chipping and putting skills on a very soggy ninth green. Sunday’s session had a massive turnout of 33 participants with many children trying golf for the first time. “The day’s attendance showed that Gove Junior Golf is on track in promoting junior golf, with a lot of budding potential future Adam Scotts and Karrie

Webbs in the making. “The Territory’s country clubs seem to be a lot more open in allowing juniors to utilise the course and its facilities. “The large number of girls attending over the weekend was encouraging for the future of women’s golf,” said Mr Albon. Juniors coach Jason Lane said it was encouraging to see the number of kids turn up to participate in Tony’s clinic. “Being able to tap into Tony’s wealth of knowledge and the ability to ask on the spot questions will be of benefit for the beginner and more experienced juniors. “It was a very successful weekend and we look forward to Tony’s next visit in the coming months.” Junior golf sessions are on Sundays 9.00am, during the school calendar timetable.
