South of Embley approved
Senior Wik Waya Traditional Owner, Tony Kerindun, welcomes Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa Community Relations specialist, Scott Goodson, to Country on the South of Embley mine lease.
RIO Tinto Alcan has welcomed the Commonwealth Government’s environmental approval of the South of Embley bauxite mining project. The project was approved by the Commonwealth on Wedensday, March 15, 2013 with rigorous environmental conditions including measures to protect the marine and terrestrial environment. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s general manager Operations, Gareth Manderson said the approval of the project’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) by Commonwealth Environment Minister Tony Burke was a significant milestone. “This is great news for Weipa, as the project will ensure our Weipa operations generate employment and other benefits for the Western Cape for another 40 years,” Mr Manderson said. “We hope to start construction when we receive other relevant permits and authorities, and the usual Rio Tinto internal approvals.” Rio Tinto Alcan president and chief executive officer, Bauxite and Alumina, Pat Fiore said the EIS approved by the Minister and assessed by the Commonwealth Environment Department was the culmination of over five years of extensive research and community engagement, including significant input from Traditional Owners. The project will extend mining operations on an area of the company’s existing mining lease south of the Embley River. “The EIS outlines how we can sustainably develop the South of Embley bauxite resource while safeguarding the Cape and the Great Barrier Reef,” Mr Fiore said. “While our EIS already outlines a comprehensive package of measures to mitigate environmental and social impacts, the Commonwealth has required a number of additional, continued page 3 stringent measures.

Western Cape College students trying on the Police ballistic vests at the careers day.
Australia is not doing so very badly, although cash is tight and there will have to be some cutbacks. The Opposition, who live in the mirror Australia somewhere on Mars, are horrified by the wreckage of our once proud nation and don’t fancy the chances of us ever being able to afford a loaf of bread again. Unless we are smart enough to vote for Tony Ears in September, who will make everything better again. Pretty dull stuff, unless you listened carefully to Tony’s speech. Did you notice the cultural sensitivity he displayed? It brought a proud glow to my heart.

Weipa Police on display at school careers day WeIpa police officers recently highlighted the different roles police perform and types of equipment used by officers at a careers day at the Western Cape College Weipa campus. Over 250 students from years 7 to 12 took part in the careers day which also showcased a range of careers from other government organisations, local companies, contractors and apprentice-based organisations. The presence of the Water Police vessel on the day was a huge hit with the students. Police also took along alcometers, Police vehicles, protective body armour, handcuffs and speed detection devices which sparked interest amongst the students in pursuing a career in policing. The students came out on top as winners when Police conducted running speed trials between students and teachers using the hand held speed detection device. Constables Ben Forbes and Emma Wallace attended the careers day with Senior Constable Jacqueline Kissel. “The students were extremely positive and asked many questions about what was involved in policing. “After discussions regarding entry requirements for joining the Police service I could identify a number of future Police officers”, said Senior Constable Kissel. Everyone understands that in our multi-cultural nation, we must behave with consideration to other people’s deepest beliefs and history, and didn’t Tony display that wonderfully? He recognises that, for some people, money is not simple numbers in a bank account but a fundamental part of their make-up. He recognises that a dollar means totally different things in the hands of different cultural groups. There are some people for whom a dollar is at the core of their being. They have been brought up in households that really understand money in large quantities, and it hurts them deeply if anyone treats it

with disrespect. For others, it is simply something to spend on beer or cigarettes. Tony understands that taking dollars from the first group is culturally insensitive. On the other hand, the other people don’t care about money and don’t mind sharing it with the tax man. Tony understands about superannuation too. He told us that if a poor person is given the chance to save for the future, or take a superannuation dollar now, that poor person will always choose cash in his hand. Far better not to worry about super for people like that, and keep it to assist people who really appreciate it.

Green light for mine expansion
Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s general manager operations, Gareth Manderson has welcome the expansion approval. from page 1
“In addition, the Queensland Government placed a range of strict controls on the project when it approved the state EIS in May last year. “Respect for the environment is central to the way we operate, and we will ensure all the conditions for the construction and operation of the project are met.” Mr Fiore said the Commonwealth Environment Minister had asked Rio Tinto Alcan to assess project shipping through the Great Barrier Reef. “The project does not substantially change the number of bauxite ships traversing the Reef and the EIS shows that potential impacts on the environment can be managed. In fact, the project will initially result in less bauxite ships traversing the Reef as higher quality ore is accessed. “We have been mining bauxite on the Cape – and shipping it safely through dedicated shipping lanes to Gladstone – for almost half a century.” The project will underpin the continued operation of Rio Tinto Alcan’s refinery operations in Gladstone, supporting the expansion of Yarwun and more than 2000 refinery jobs, as well as grow bauxite export capability. Mr Manderson said he would like to thank the community members who have taken the time to speak to Rio Tinto Alcan about the project. “I want to stress that even though we have spoken to hundreds of people about the SoE project, this will not stop as we head towards construction. Our stakeholders, and our ongoing engagement, is still as important as ever.” “We appreciate the support we have received for the Project from the community, and Traditional Owners and custodians of the land upon which we operate.” An average of 950 workers will be required for construction. During operation, employee numbers will range up to 1200 depending on production rates.
Battle not over yet: Wilderness Society DR Tim Seelig, Queensland campaign manager for the Wilderness Soceity said Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke’s approval of the South of Embley mine “will result in environmental vandalism on a grand scale” and expose the Great Barrier Reef to increased shipping threat. In a statement released on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 the Wilderness Society said the mine would wipe out 30,000 hectares of a landscape that a Federal Government-commissioned scientific report has only recently identified as being of World Heritage standard, land that can never be fully rehabilitated. “Minister Burke has given the green light to landscape destruction, land only just formally recognised for its World Heritage-standard values”, said Dr Seelig said. The Wilderness Society has also drawn attention to deficiencies in the Federal Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, where newly discovered species in the proposed mine area did not have to be considered in the approval processes because their discovery came after Rio Tinto’s original application. Species of crab, shrimp, and sea snake – all new to science – have been found in the area to be mined, and will now be threatened.
The new Rio Tinto mine will also result in 900 shipping movements through the reef, the Wilderness Society states, which UNESCO has already said is at great risk from new development and increased shipping. Rio was forced to resubmit its EIS to address reef impacts and come clean on the 900 shipping movements through the Great Barrier Reef. “Just weeks after UNESCO renewed its call on the federal and Queensland governments not to place further pressure on this fragile and stressed ecosystem, Minister Burke has done just that”, said Dr Seelig. However, the South of Embley project still doesn’t have final approval because the Queensland Land Court has yet to approve a new Environmental Authority. An action lodged by the Wilderness Society late last year objecting to the Queensland Government’s environmental approvals for the project has yet to be determined by the Court. “Rio will not be able to start any major works on this project until it has received the okay from the Queensland Land Court, and investors need to realise the project faces fierce and ongoing opposition. The battle over this mine is far from over”, added Lyndon Schneiders, National Campaign Director of the Wilderness Society.
QRC applauds federal decision ThE Queensland Resources Council has congratulated Rio Tinto Alcan on securing federal environmental approval for its South of Embley bauxite project on western Cape York Peninsula. “Last week’s announcement, ahead of the statutory period available to federal Environment Minister Burke, confirms the thoroughness of the company’s work in charting a sustainable economic and environmental course in the Far North,” Queensland Resources Council chief executive Michael Roche said. “Subject to final company approvals, South of Embley will
preserve a large number of jobs across the region, particularly on the Western Cape where the existing Weipa bauxite mine has an indigenous workforce of 25 per cent.” Mr Roche said that because of the higher quality ore available from the South of Embley mine, there would initially be fewer ships travelling through the Great Barrier Reef. “However, it’s also worth emphasising that there has never been an adverse shipping incident involving the transport of bauxite from Weipa through the Great Barrier Reef – a fact studiously overlooked in the ongoing campaign by anti-mining activists,” Mr Roche said.

Virgin Australia pleased with transport review
Formal attire.
By Mark Bousen
VIRGIN Australia believes some of the regulated air routes in Queensland, such as Weipa-Cairns, are now capable of sustaining competition, saying air fares would be reduced by as much as 30 per cent. A Virgin Australia spokesperson told the Western Cape Bulletin that, while, the airline was disappointed with the Queensland Gove r n m e n t ’s d e c i s i o n to extend the current contracts for the routes until December, 2014, it is pleased, however, that the Queensland Government is currently undertaking a review of long-distance passenger transport services in the State, including the potential deregulation of air services routes. The carrier says Vir-
gin Australia has lodged a submission to this review, underscoring that competition brought about by deregulating selected routes would bring lower fares, delivering better access for regional communities to essential services, reducing costs for businesses, particularly in the mining and resources sector, and boosting tourism to regional areas. The airline has stated previously and repeated it during the official launch of Virgin’s regional airline Skywest this month in Perth that fares would be cut by 30 per cent. “Our recent acquisition of Skywest has enhanced our capacity to expand Virgin Australia’s regional operations, and we stand ready to bring competition to a number of regulated
routes as soon as market restrictions are lifted by the Queensland Government,” the spokesperson said. Virgin Australia said that, at the time the Queensland Government late last year granted an extension to QantasLink to December, 2014, for the regulated Weipa-Cairns air route, it would urge the State Government review the allocation process. QantasLink was awarded a five-year contract in 2008, with that due for re-tendering early this year. Torres Shire Council which owns the Horn Island Airport strongly condemned the decision without public consultation, saying it was in the process of compiling its submission when informed by the Torres News (Western Cape
Bulletin’s sister ‘paper) of the State’s decision to bypass community input. Virgin has told the Western Cape Bulletin air fares would drop as much as 30 per cent if it was allowed to operate on the Cairns-Weipa routes. Member for Cook David Kempton has never replied to any of the ‘phone or email inquiries from this writer to explain the State’s decision to ignore the community’s input. At a recent QantasLink community meeting on Thursday Island, the Torres News was not given the opportunity to ask any questions about the decision and was forced to leave the meeting when the State Government official was to address it.

The long-term direction of Queensland’s tourism industry is under the spotlight at workshops across the state to discuss how the industry will be more competitive and successful over the next 20 years. Local tourism operators, regional tourism organisation leaders and council representatives are coming together in a series of workshops to help develop a 20-year plan for Queensland tourism. The 20-year plan will focus on making Queensland Australia’s number one tourism destination, and reaching the Queensland Government’s target of doubling annual overnight visitor expenditure to $30 billion per year between 2010 and 2020. The plan is an opportunity for industry and government to work together to review the current environment that the tourism industry is working in, assess how the future trends and consumer needs will change the tourism landscape over the next 20 years, identify goals, and provide a pathway to achieve them. The Queensland Government has engaged
CSIRO to identify the most important trends, or ‘megatrends’, that will shape the future of tourism in Queensland over coming decades. Seven megatrends have been identified. The CSIRO Futures work has been developed to provide context for discussions about the future. You can download the draft report, or read some thought starters on the trends can be turned into opportunities and build a preferred future. A short survey is available for you to provide feedback on the likely impact of these megatrends and our preparedness for these, as well as what you think are the most important things for industry to focus on in order to prosper in this future environment. The results of this survey and discussions in region will inform the framework for the 20year tourism plan to be presented for discussion at the 2013 DestinationQ forum on August 27-28 on the Gold Coast. The final plan is expected to be released in late 2013 or early 2014. To p a r t i c i p a t e i n the survey go to http:// www.destq.com.au/20year-plan/online-survey
Western Cape College Weipa campus will be presenting Annie the musical for three nights on May 23, 24 and 25 the Performing Arts Complex. Students in Years 8 to 12 have been rehearsing all year for this much-anticipated event (pictured above). Tickets are $10 a seat with doors opening at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Mining lease – no public access A SECTION of Rio Tinto Alcan’s mining lease near RAAF Scherger has been closed to public access until 31 December 2013. During this time, Rio Tinto Alcan will conduct mining activities such as cultural heritage and environmental surveys and drilling works in the area. Only authorised personnel and Traditional Owners can access the area, about 30 kilometres north-east of Weipa. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa general manager Operations, Gareth Manderson, said public access has been closed to ensure community safety while the work is undertaken.
“We ask that community members respect this closure and understand that employees can be working in any part of the lease at any time, including in areas that may look unoccupied,” Mr Manderson said. “Unauthorised entry to this section of the lease poses an unacceptable risk to the safety of our employees, and to the community member.” For any questions, phone Rio Tinto Alcan’s freecall feedback hotline 1800 707 633, or visit the Community Relations building (located behind Weipa Bowls Club).

First European contact to be commemorated at Mapoon ON Monday, May 27, 2013 at 9am the First Contact Memorial will be officially opened near Cullen Point, Mapoon. The First Contact Memorial has been established by the Parliament of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in partnership with the Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council and the Queensland Government, to commemorate the first contact between Indigenous Australians and Europeans. The following is an extract of a paper produced by Geoff Wharton which is to be included in a booklet to be published by the Netherlands Embassy to commemorate the official opening of the memorial... By Geoff Wharton
THE First Contact Memorial is a project to establish a monument and gardens area at Mapoon on western Cape York Peninsula, Queensland. The memorial has national and international significance and is being developed to commemorate the first contact between the Indigenous people of Australia and Europeans which occurred in 1606, probably somewhere near Mapoon, possibly on the shores of Port Musgrave or in the Wenlock River. The Europeans were the crew of the Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie – VOC) sailing vessel, Duyfken, meaning Little Dove. The memorial also records later Dutch expeditions to the Gulf of Carpentaria during the 17th and 18th centuries. Although a small monument was erected at Duyfken Point in 1957 by a Royal Australian Navy crew on behalf of the Royal Australian Historical Society, its location is very inaccessible and largely forgotten. Between 1606 and 1756 at least four Dutch expeditions sponsored by the VOC visited western Cape York Peninsula on the shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria, including: Janszoon (1606), Carstenszoon (1623), Tasman (1644) and Gonzal and Van Asschens (1756). Unlike other parts of Australia, the Indigenous people of western Cape York Peninsula have long been aware of the Dutch contacts with their ancestors. The First Contact Memorial project was established by the then chair of the Australia on the Map Queensland committee, Peter Henneken and the Honorary Netherlands Consul in Queensland, Captain Kasper Kuiper R.O.N. in 2006. Following a review of possible sites for the memorial it was decided that, subject to the community’s approval, Mapoon on the western shores of Port Musgrave would be the most suitable site. Lengthy discussions ensued among the Netherlands Embassy, the Queensland Government and the Mapoon community to determine the project scope, culminating in agreement by the Mapoon community to host the First Contact Memorial on a site to be chosen by the Tjungundji elders within the Mapoon Deed of Grant in Trust (DOGIT) lands. The proposed site for the First Contact Memorial was nominated by Tjungundji Elders Mrs Harriet

On March 28, 2011, a ceremony was held by the Elders and Mapoon Rangers at the proposed site near Cullen Point to welcome to country the former Netherlands Ambassador, His Excellency Willem Andreae, and to confirm the site’s suitability. The Trustees of the Mapoon Deed of Grant in Trust (DOGIT) lands gave formal approval for the use of the site for the Memorial on 30 August 2011. The site is located approximately seven kilometres north of the Mapoon township. The memorial gardens cover a fenced area approximately 30 metres wide and 30 metres deep. The monument design has been developed in consultation with the Traditional Owners and the Mapoon community, and will include a silhouette of the Duyfken sailing vessel which has been manufactured in Brisbane by Urban Art Projects (UAP) using a single piece of 20mm thick marine grade aluminium plate measuring 2400mm x 1200mm. It will be mounted on the concrete block structure designed for cyclonic
conditions. The silhouette was transported to Weipa courtesy of Rio Tinto Alcan’s Community Relations Department and has been installed by the Mapoon building works crew recently. It is proposed that the monument will be high enough to be seen from the approach road, silhouetted against the waters and skyline of Port Musgrave. The view on arrival will be the starboard side of the vessel, anchored off shore in the harbour with the bow pointing south, just as the Tjungundji People would have seen the Duyfken when it first anchored at Mapoon in 1606. A set of twelve cast bronze plaques which include cultural and historical information about the Mapoon people, their country and the First Contact history, as well as the official opening plaque will be affixed to the base structure. Community artists Daphne De Jersey, Diane Nicholls and Sandy Toeboy have all contributed artwork to the plaque designs. There will be six plaques on the walls of each side of the monument.
The First Contact Memorial will be officially opened at 9am on Monday, May 27, 2013 by the Governor of Queensland, Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensely AC, and Mr Fred de Graaf, President of the Senate of the Netherlands, and the Elders of the Mapoon community.

ANZAC Day funds donated to RSL PROCEEDS from crown & anchor and two-up games played on ANZAC Day at B Company 51st Battalion and the Weipa Bowls Club have been donated to the Weipa RSL sub-branch. The funds will be used by the local sub-branch to finance the 2015 Gallipoli 100-year anniversary trip to be made by Western Cape College students Tyra Fraser and Ben James. The College ran a competition for Year 9 students and from this Tyra and Ben were selected to take part in the trip, accompanied by head of campus, Leon Proud. Weipa RSL sub-branch president, Neil Dickinson said the full deposit had been paid for the nine-day trip and the students were already looking forward to their Gallipoli experience. “Tara’s whole family has decided to join the tour also (at their own expense). I’m sure it will be an expierence the students will never forget.” B Company 51st Battalion’s WO2 Tony Harris said the support from the local community on ANZAC Day was tremendous. “We were overwhelmed with the support at all ANZAC Day events this year – from the dawn service, to the Bravo Coy breakfast and onto the Weipa Bowls Club luncheon. It was fantastic.” “We would also like to thank the Weipa Bakery and Sodexo, Kenny Pappin for conducting two-up at the Bowls Club, and Goodline for our new flagpole,” he said. A total of $1828 was raised at the B Coy ANZAC Day crown & anchor and two-up, and a further $1000 was donated from two-up at the Weipa Bowls Club.
Corporal Lloyd Williams (RAAF) and Corporal Phil Beaver (Army) donate $1828 to Weipa RSL sub-branch president Neil Dickinson for the WCC students 2015 Gallipoli trip.

NEWS Fauna Friday fundraiser
Log in to facebook, go to Western Cape Bulletin and share your thoughts!
WESTERN Cape College celebrated Fauna Friday last week to raise money for Weipa Wildlife Care Inc. The day was an absolute success with students sporting animal outfits big and small. There were frogs, lions, elephants and lady beetles in the primary school. In the high school onesies were the rage with students braving the heat in full body outfits. The school raised a total of $300 for the wildlife association. Without support from the school and community, it would not be possible for Weipa Wildlife Care to provide assistance to injured wildlife, and your support is greatly appreciated. If you missed out on giving a donation there are drop boxes at Cape York Guardian Pharmacy and Weipa Real Estate. Haylea and Kelly Farber.

A nimal Tales First of all I would like to thank everyone for their amazing fundraising efforts. It is a wonderful thing to see our community step up and help out our magnificent native wildlife. What we have in care at the moment: Agile Wallaby: Maya, she is a just-furred Joey that was found on the Mapoon Road. She is eating well and quite healthy. She is a very lucky girl as the people that found her only saw her because she was out of the pouch. We try to stress to people that if you do see a dead Wallaby on the road please check because Joeys can live up to seven days in their dead mother’s pouch.

Osprey: Schnitzel was found in Boyd Bay by researchers. She was kept in an open box until I could go down there two days later to pick her up. She has been in Cairns since last week getting a full check-up from wildlife vet Annabelle and it was confirmed she has severe head trauma. She is slowly getting better but it will be a long process.

Pandanus Parade paradise wins garden competition THE annual Weipa’s Cleanest Street and Best Garden Competition was held last month and the winners have been announced. Judged by Weipa Town Authority staff the competition was again hotly contested and Weipa’s top garden prize was this year awarded to Kerry Bennett and Geoff Bryant for their beautifully presented Pandanus Parade property. The couple’s garden is a tropical paradise which is kept lush all year round with permanent sprinkler systems run by a bore. “We’re very fortunate to have the ability to keep the water up to all our gardens,” Kerry said. “There are a lot of natives planted along the back fence for privacy, which don’t require much water, but because of the bore water we are able to plant a greater variety of plants in our garden beds. “We’ve also applied mulch to most of the garden now which helps enormously.” When Kerry and Geoff purchased the property two years ago they set about creating a garden that was cool, inviting and relaxing for both humans and birds. “We have several bird feeders and baths in the gardens and the birds they attract are phenom-

enal,” Kerry said. “It’s so soothing to sit on the back patio and enjoy the garden with the birds.” After reconstructing the front entrance to the home Kerry and Geoff have established an inviting entry bordered by an impressive cycad feature on one side and a beautiful collection of tropical palms, bird’s nest ferns and bromeliads on the other. “Not being really sure about what would grow here in Weipa it’s been a bit of trial and error in the gardens,” Kerry said. “I’ve had success with a lot of things, and some that were not doing so well responded to re-planting in
other parts of the garden, but I’ve lost a few plants too!” There are few harsh lines in the Pandanus Parade garden with curved beds surrounding outside areas, which are more an extension of the garden than separate areas. Beautiful potted plants on the back patio ensure the garden does not stop where the house begins. “Our intention was to create a tropical paradise here in Weipa and we’re very pleased with the results so far,” Geoff said. Kerry and Geoff received a Mitre 10 voucher from the WTA for their award-winning garden.

Aurukun community celebrates healthy eating launch MORE than 600 Aurukun residents had a fun and healthy time as they celebrated the launch of Island & Cape’s new healthy eating project on May 7 and 8. The Healthy Choices launch and Health Expo, run by Island & Cape and supported by health providers in Aurukun, included a free healthy barbecue and fruit, competitions and prizes, face painting, store walk ‘n’ talks, apple slinkies, balloons, and lots of fun activities and games. Island & Cape Retail Operations Manager Craig Oxlade said the community had a great time at the launch of the healthy badging project, run in conjunction with Apunipima Cape York Health Council. “The launch was a fantastic day, and the kids especially had a great time,” he said. “The children were all given a healthy lunch and fruit, including cups of fruit salad, and played fun interactive games with nutritionists. “This included guessing how much sugar is in which foods, and there were some prizes handed out to those who guessed correctly. “The community participated really well, and the event brought together a number of organisations that operate in Aurukun, pooling resources for a happier and healthier outcome for local residents.” Mr Oxlade said Island & Cape really appreciated the support of Judith Aliakbari and her team at Apunipima. “I’d like to say a huge thank you to Apunipima, and I know this is just the start of an exciting, ongoing relationship,” he said.
“It was fantastic to see two of their nutritionists take children around our store and educate them on what the healthiest foods are. “It’s extremely cost-effective for private and government organisations to be able to work together to achieve a common goal – namely, improving the health of Indigenous people in Far North Queensland. “We’re proud to be leading the way on this front, but with the ongoing support of key partners such as Apunipima,” Mr Oxlade said. “I’d also like thank all our fresh food suppliers, who really got on board with this program and assisted with food donations as part of our giveaways.” Mr Oxlade said the project aims to help the Aurukun community to recognise products which are the healthier choice by their badging. “We want to promote good health, nutrition and physical activity, and Apunipima has provided wonderful support to help us get this project off the ground,” he said. “We’ve also been training our staff on how to read labels, so they can also help customers make the right choice when they buy food and drink from our store. “The nutritionists will continue to work closely with our staff to ensure there are highlighted products in the store recommended as healthy eating. “The launch was a great way to celebrate this exciting new initiative.” For more information on Island & Cape’s remote stores, visit www. islandcape.com.au

AFL wrap-up with Dallas A MIX of huge upsets, a draw and winning goals after the siren to win a game, round eight certainly was a lively one. The round started with poor old North Melbourne all-but winning the game against West Coast, only to see an Eagles blitz late in the last term. The end result was excitement-machine Nic Natanui taking a great pack-grab and slotting the goal after the siren for a spectacular two-point Eagles win. The Lions defied the odds by downing Essendon in Melbourne. Some are calling it the upset of the decade. I’m not so sure about that but it may give Michael Voss some breathing space from the media hyenas calling for his scalp. Hawthorn probably disappointed many by only beating GWS by 80-odd points when most were expecting an even greater toll. Meanwhile the Swans were probably lucky to get away with a draw against Fremantle. If the Dockers had kicked straight they would have won easily. The Suns recorded their first back to back wins in their brief history, overpowering the Bulldogs. That will most likely be the end of the record for now though as the Suns face-off against all the top sides in the next month. Collingwood caused another boil-over by knocking off the undefeated Cats. Carlton continued their rollercoaster year with an “up” this week over Port who are sliding down the eight. Richmond had to work in their win over the Demons and although pushed for much of the game their class showed as they ran away with it in the last quarter. Adelaide was too good for the Saints. The top eight is getting interesting with Hawthorn now on top and both Geelong and Essendon starting to show signs of stress. Port Adelaide has dropped out of the top four now that they have had a taste of the teams at the top. Collingwood and Richmond have found much-needed form to hold on to the bottom of the eight. The Eagles, Carlton and the Crows are all pushing for top eight if anyone falters. North should join them in this quest over the next month. The pressure is on in the middle of the table! Round nine is Dreamtime Round to honour Indigenous Australians and their contribution to the game. The highlight will be the traditional Saturday Night Dreamtime at the “G” featuring Richmond and Essendon. With Essendon dropping a couple of games and Richmond back on track this could be a close and entertaining match. Collingwood and Sydney will put on a tough physical encounter that could go either way. Port will find it tough taking on a wounded and even hungrier Geelong. GWS play a strengthening West Coast outfit while St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs battle it out at Etihad Stadium. The Lions will be confident and a real chance at the Gabba against Carlton. On Sunday the Hawks host the improving Suns and the Kangaroos have a tough one against the Crows. Fremantle are at home to the Demons who will be lucky to even afford the airfares.
My Tips- Collingwood, Geelong, West Coast, St Kilda, Brisbane, Richmond, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Fremantle. That’s the wrap! Dallas

ROUND ten was the Harvey Norman Women In League Round, recognising all women associated with the game with teams donning pink jerseys, shoes or socks. Friday night brought us games that ended up being quite easy wins; with the Rabbitohs beating the Tigers and the Broncos beating the Titans. Super Saturday followed suit from the Friday night games, with the Dragons getting up against the Eels and the Panthers smashing the Warriors. Then was a hard fought match seeing the Roosters beat the Cowboys. On Sunday the Sharks beat the Raiders in a tight contest and the Knights ran home easily against the Bulldogs. It does look likely that Krisnan Inu will have another spell on the sidelines after the match review panel look at the leg twist he put on Knights James McManus. Not good after he just did five weeks for a spear tackle on Greg Inglis. Monday night’s game proved to be the match of the round, with the Storm and the Sea Eagles settling for a draw after golden point could not seperate the two teams. In breaking news from down south, the Storm has been sold by News Ltd to a Kiwi consortium led by Bart Campbell a former barrister from New Zealand High Court. Also Mark Evans CEO of British Halequins will take over as CEO of the Storm from Ron Gauci. State of Origin is starting to be all the talk now with game one only two weeks away. Can Laurie Daley turn the Blues around and win the series especially with two games at ANZ Stadium. Well, Laurie only has 6,397 players to pick from for his team so can he stop the Queensland juggernaut. ...QUEENSLANDER... Excitement builds as soccer finals approach
SOCCER SPORTSMANSHIP: Red team player Charlton generously played for the Blue team in last week’s Titan Blue v Red match, scoring a goal for the side.
Round five was a very hot day of soccer but everyone was in good spirits and played some fantastic games. Finals are getting closer so the excitement is building. Game of the week: Titans Red v Blue. An awesome game full of fun, laughter and at the same time skill and competitive battles. Liam was the Blue team captain and he did a fantastic job also, scoring two goals. Chelsea, Charlton and Kaidace scored one skillful goal each. Team captain for Red was Rayesh, with William scoring three brilliant goals and Kyle, after engaging in many competitive battles, scored one great goal. The final goal - a penalty shoot out - was scored by Liam in the final minute. This was nail-biting stuff as the score was four-all at
this stage, so victory was Blues by the skin of their teeth! A special thanks to Charlton from Red who very kindly agreed to play for Blue as the Blue team did not have enough players this week. What a great bunch of soccer players - you should be proud of yourselves and your sportsmanship. Game results, Saturday, May 18: Tykes: Green 10 def Blue 0; Gold 1 Def Red 0. Teens: Green def Blue – Forfeit; Red 4 Def Gold 0. Titans: Blue 5 def Red 4. Next games will be played on Saturday, May 25 – 2.30pm: Squirts - Gold v White; Teens - Blue v Red; Gold v Green. 3.30pm: Tykes - Blue v Red; Gold v Green; Titans - Blue v Red. Please arrive 20 minutes prior to your game start time.
Coaching is Wednesday afternoons at the oval - Squirts/Tykes at 4pm and Teens/Titans at 5pm. The grand final will be played on June 1 and games will be played at the usual time slots. For Squirts and Titans the two teams will play as normal. For Tykes and Teens, we will refer to the points ladder with 1 v 2 playing in the grand final and teams 3 v 4 in a friendly match. After your child’s game on June 1, please return your child’s jersey (dirty) to the committee in the P&C Shed and you will receive your $25 jersey deposit back. Please bring a shirt for your child to change into. A sausage sizzle and trophy presentation for all players will be held immediately after the last game at approximately 4.30pm. Please bring a chair or blanket to sit on. – ‘Til next time, keep strikin’

While Cape York Motorcycle Club was conducting its first coaching day of 2013, Mike Cooper was turning heads in Cairns. The Weipa local showed class as he went 2-2-1 on his way to win round two of the TNQMX Championship. With excitement of the previous day fresh on his mind, the newly nicknamed ‘Bauxite Bullet’ then raced round three in Mareeba. Securing second place in the first moto Cooper showed day one was no fluke. A poor gate and start in moto two was enough to hold Cooper to a sixth after working hard to come through the pack. Unfortunately, the last race didn’t work out as planned either. Whilst running in second after a much better start, Cooper was clipped by another bike and found himself cartwheeling down the track ending in a tenth place finish, which resulted in fifth overall. Greg Taylor, another Weipa local, also made the long journey down and did well in both

the veterans and lites support classes, as well as passing on some valuable knowledge to the up-and-coming youngster. Well done lads. As the boys raced down south, there was plenty to like about the next generation of riders at the club’s coaching day. With kids of all ages and skill levels in attendance, Rod, Brian, Gus and Davo ran a very professional session, teaching the juniors valuable skills and handy tips on riding a dirtbike. More than 15 junior riders made for an exciting practice session as the kids roared away from coaching and put their new skills to the test. It was evident there are a lot of talented juniors coming through the ranks. Thanks to all involved in a great weekend of motocross and we’ll see everyone at the track Saturday, June 1. Good fishing despite unsettled weather Well, another week has gone and the weather is still very unsettled with strong winds one day and a zephyr the next. On the days that the wind didn’t blow the boats that ventured offshore found some good fish on the bite. Chris from Tackle World charters had a half-day charter and they trolled up some nice Spanish Mackerel and then fished the bottom for some excellent Tuskers and Fingermark until the Sharks moved in and it proved to be the pattern for the day. The leads have produced some small Cod and Trevally and again the Sharks are a problem, taking hooked fish and usually the better ones and leaving the little ones alone. Up the coast out of Pennefather the reefs up there are producing some good fish for visitor Paul Falzon and his mates with Cod, Tuskers and Fingermark. Robert Armitage-Slark fished the lagoon with some co-workers for some very nice Mangrove Jacks, Bream and Cod with first-time angler Eleri Rossiter, who works at the Albatross Bay Resort landing her first-ever fish, a nice Cod. I ran into Dave Newman from Weipa Fishing Adventures

who was telling me that he has been taking out a chap by the name of John White. On the face of it this is nothing unusual, but John fishes out of a wheelchair and never a keener angler you will ever meet. He has been landing Mangrove Jacks and Barra whilst under Dave’s tutelage. The Mission River is still fishing well with Steve Fanias, using live Mullet landed a good Triple Tail while fishing for Barra. The Prawns are still around and causing a Catch 22 situation, with enough for a feed but the fish are tuned in to the Prawns and leaving lures alone. Under the Mission River bridge I witnessed the capture of Bream, Blue Salmon and Grunter on the run-out tide. On the northern side of the bridge there was a large Barra lost when the hooks pulled when the fish was close to the boat. Phil Manion landed some large Queenfish on the drop-off in front of the Waldron using live bait. I had a fish on Saturday up the Hey and found the Barra very co-operative, taking a liking to the new Shimano World Stage lure in the gold colour. The lure fish’s best on the stab and pause and you could fish this lure to fast. I also noticed
that if there wasn’t any bait hugging the shore then there wasn’t any action on the lures. All in all I was quite impressed with the lure, catching Mangrove Jacks, Barra and Threadfin Salmon. It has been 12 months since I arrived in town and I will be
going back down to the Gold Coast for my big sister’s 80th birthday. I will be gone for a couple of weeks but be back in time for the Fishing Classic. ‘Til next time smooth seas, calm breezes and tight lines. – Cheers, China
