An irreverent, satirical (and totally fictional) comment upon the issues of life, by our faceless correspondent.

It has been business as usual in Australian politics but there is a strange feeling in the air. Polies banging on about how wonderful they are, and how weak/dishonest/stupid/ incompetent or whatever their opponents are but somehow, it just does not matter any more. There is nothing anyone can do or say that is not put into the shade by the big question when will the election be?

Tony is at serious risk of harvesting all the discord and negativity he has been sowing but hopes people will vote for him anyway, even if they have to hold their noses while they do. wants to play in the Canberra sandpit. He has earned the enmity of the establishment and, as a result, has been having a very, very hard time in the media. Do an internet search of the news, and there are no positive stories about him and his new party. None at all. Now that is strange, because no-one is that bad. If you study his party platform and his speeches, he is quite presentable. The fact that he has no background of past political failures makes him look shiny and attractive, so why the relentless negativity from the press? I suspect some murky manipulation by the old guard.

Contrast his coverage with that of Oberführer Campbell Newman. Here is a polie who has taken time out from firing every Queenslander he can get away with, to give parliamentarians an obscene pay rise. He even wants to increase his salary to match President Obama’s. Sounds pretty bad to me, but you will search in vain for a negative story about him in the mainstream press. Instead, the Oberführer is praised because he is ‘going to sort out this mess’. Sometimes I feel like a mushroom; kept in the dark and fed on . . .

One scheme. One focus on individuals. One commitment to lifelong support. From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.

What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia? DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis.

Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.

Will I lose my current support? No. Your current arrangements will stay in place until you have met DisabilityCare Australia to discuss your needs.

Will it affect my Disability Support Pension? No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected.

When does it all begin? DisabilityCare Australia is being rolled out in stages because it is a big change to the current system. Locations that start from July 2013 Barwon region of Victoria ...................................People aged 0-64 Hunter region of NSW ............................................People aged 0-64 South Australia ......................................................... Children aged 0-14 Tasmania .......................................................Young people aged 15-24 Locations that start from July 2014 ACT .............................................................................................People aged 0-64 Barkly region of NT ....................................................People aged 0-64 From July 2016, DisabilityCare Australia will continue to extend to more locations and age groups around Australia, including Queensland.

Final Legionella testing completed at Weipa IHS

RESULTS from final Leigionella testing at the Weipa Integrated Health Service (IHS) won’t be known until next week. Early last week, testing for Legionella at the Weipa Integrated Health Service returned three positive samples from two low-risk sites. Ms Turner said the two sites – a cleaner’s sink in the hospital morgue and a little used patient assisted shower area in the Day Surgery – had been sealed off in preparation for cleaning and disinfecting. “We had hoped to clean the affected areas on July 3, the day after we received the results, but found we needed to order some additional parts for the hot water system that would allow us to flush the pipes

in both areas with very hot water,’’ she said. “Once those parts arrived, we were able to complete the cleaning and flushing on July 9. “The two affected areas were re-tested on July 15 to ensure the Legionella has been fully cleared before reopening them for use. “The return of final retesting results for Weipa from the laboratory in Townsville will take between seven and 10 days from the day of receipt of the samples by the lab.’’ Ms Turner said the Weipa Integrated Health Service had been tested in response to a request from the director general of the Department of Health for all public hospitals to test for Legionella.

Grant shines light on Coen SES

COEN SES volunteers will receive some new equipment, thanks to a Storm Heroes grant from NRMA Insurance. NRMA Insurance Storm Heroes grants, now in their sixth year, celebrate hard-working Queensland SES teams and help them secure essential equipment. Coen SES will use the Storm Hero grant to buy two Pelican lights for use in storm damage operations. The lights are portable, waterproof and eliminate the need for power cords and generators, helping reduce trip and electrical hazards as well as noise. They will also help volunteers work more safely and efficiently, reducing time spent setting up and packing up. Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) Northern Regional Director Wayne Coutts said the grant will help the unit play an even greater role in helping their community recover from severe weather. “SES volunteers are highly trained and work in difficult circumstances, often on roofs when it’s dark and wet, or in flood-impacted areas. Better equipment helps SES volunteers serve the community more safely and efficiently. We appreciate the difference grants such as NRMA Insurance’s Storm Heroes make in supporting our volunteers,” he said. NRMA Insurance, as the major sponsor of the Queensland SES, has provided almost $295,000 in equipment grants since 2008 to SES groups across the state supporting SES volunteers in their response to severe weather events.

Indigenous disability project to change lives JAMES Cook University’s The Cairns Institute, Brain Injury Australia, and Synapse (Brain Injury Association of Queensland) have teamed up to help change the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with an acquired brain injury (ABI). The three organisations joined together on the national Practical Design Fund project to develop a culturally appropriate assessment process under DisabilityCare Australia (DCA) – the national disability insurance scheme. Dr Anne Stephens, senior researcher at The Cairns Institute, said the project, funded by the Federal Government, aims to ensure that for the first time, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians living with an ABI have the same access to DCA-funded support as any other Australian with a disability. “The national disability insurance scheme could change the lives of many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are living with an ABI,” Dr Stephens said. “But they will only get the support they need if they are given the right kind of assessment.” “The majority of these people

Cairns Institute senior researcher, Dr Anne Stephens.

living with an ABI will not yet have received a culturally acceptable and/or valid assessment of either their disability, or their care and support needs. “This project helps DCA to offer Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with an ABI the right kind of support, possibly for the first time, and in a way that respects both their culture and the correct assessment methods. “In the short term, the eligibility and support needs of these people living with an ABI will need to be assessed using ‘standard’ assessment tools. “However, our project gives DCA assessors best practice guidance and a support framework. “Once our prototype toolkit has been validated, DCA will be able to provide Aboriginal and Torres

Strait Islander people living with an ABI with an assessment that is culturally acceptable and scientifically reliable. “We truly believe it will change people’s lives for the better across Australia.” During their research, the project team spoke to more than 70 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with an ABI, and/or their carers and service providers, from communities in the Northern Territory, New South Wales and Queensland. Jennifer Cullen, chief executive officer at Synapse, said there had been many challenges in developing the project. “We had to build trust with communities, overcome the historical distrust of assessments, and educate people about the DCA and acquired brain injuries,” said Ms Cullen. “We’ve already seen some really positive outcomes from the communities we’ve engaged with, which has been highly encouraging.” The project team will now work with communities and services across Australia to pilot, refine and validate the instruments in community, rehabilitation and disability settings.

Investing in our health workforce for a better state of health.

The Queensland Government is committed to looking after our health workforce. That’s why we’ve invested $1.35 billion in pay-rises for Queensland Health employees over the next 3 years. This includes a 6% increase for nurses and midwives since April last year, with a further 3% next year making a total of $592 million. A 2.5% increase for medical officers, meaning an extra $300 million invested across the workforce. And a 3% increase for employees under the Queensland Public Health Sector Certified Agreement 2011, totalling a further $466 million. We’re committed to rewarding the people who help us to deliver a better state of health. NortherN Australia marine transport provider Sea Swift is celebrating after taking away top prize at a prestigious national award ceremony in Melbourne. The company clinched the Innovation and Excellence in Workforce Development (Maritime) Award at the recent 2013 Transport and Logistics Industry Skills Council (TLISC) awards. Sea Swift also achieved ‘highly commended’ in the category of Excellence in Industry Promotion. Sea Swift chief executive officer Fred White said the company, which has depots on Thursday Island and Horn Island, and in Weipa, Seisia, Gladstone, and Darwin, beat off fierce competition from across Australia to win the maritime category. “We’re absolutely delighted to have won this national award for the first time, and it is a tribute to each and every one of our incredible staff,” he said. “ I t ’s a f a n t a s t i c achievement, and great acknowledgement for all the hard work put in by our people over a number of years. “It’s also a great coup for the people of Far North Queensland and the Northern Territory to have northern Australia recognised at such a prestigious awards ceremony.” Mr White said the awards celebrated exceptional achievements made by national organisations in training and workforce development. “These national awards recognise organisations who are leaders in quality skills training and workforce development, which makes this recognition

even more pleasing,” he said. Sea Swift is one of the largest employers in the region with more than 300 staff, and makes a significant contribution to the employment and skill development of northern Australia communities, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. “Our company has a strong training ethos and we continually invest into our staff at all levels across all our divisions,” Mr White said. “This is illustrated by our commitment to all forms of training by a company of our size. “The vast majority of our commitment is not Government-funded, and is expended on more specialised and jobspecific training, from entry level core skills through to acquiring Masters tickets to sail the fleet.” Mr White said an example of Sea Swift’s commitment to its staff is through its innovative cadetship program, with the cadet intake now reaching 18. “It’s a totally unique program,” he said. “We are an established, dynamic and forward thinking company with a large growth plan and excellent employment opportunities, and this is just another example of what we offer. “As a company, our focus is about being strategically proactive and developing the capability of our entire workforce to support our ongoing expansion plans. “In particular, we are developing higher safety standards that not only attract a broader client base, but continue to attract and retain high calibre employees as well.”

THE Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland is once again searching for a Queensland bartender to be crowned U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year all in the name of a beautiful cause. If you’re an U.G.L.Y. bartender – that is Understanding, Generous, Likeable, You – then get on board with this fundraising event running July 20 to September 2 and help support people living with blood cancers. All you need to do is visit www. uglybartender.org.au, come up with some fundraising ideas and aim to win some fantastic prizes including an ice machine for the top fundraiser’s venue, thanks to principal sponsor Hoshizaki, and a $3,000 travel voucher. There are heaps of tips on the

website to help take traditional bar fundraisers like raffles and meat trays to the next level. Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland CEO, Bill Petch said the U.G.L.Y Bartender of the Year was a great opportunity for community-minded bartenders to host a fun event and in the process raise awareness for a serious cause. “The fun and relaxed atmosphere enjoyed at pubs and clubs creates an ideal environment for fundraising and even more so when you add a vivacious bartender with a heart of gold to the mix,” Mr Petch said. “Last year Queensland bartenders raised more than $228,000 which went towards providing vital support services

to patients and families whose lives have been devastated by blood cancer.” “The funds raised from the U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year competition assist the Foundation in providing a range of support services to patients and their families including free home-away-from-home accommodation for patients who have to relocate to Brisbane or Townsville to undergo lifesaving treatment.” So, if you’re a big-hearted bartender go online and register immediately to raise funds for Leukaemia patients and be in the running for some great prizes. Paul arrived in town over the weekend with his partner Collette to take up duties in the new posting here in Weipa. Paul’s appointment has been the result of over a decade of ongoing discussion between the Queensland

facilities within the Andoom Oval precinct in line with the Andoom Oval Master Plan. 

Police Service and the Weipa Town Authority (WTA) to relocate the Cape Inspector from Cairns to Weipa. The move further enhances Weipa’s reputation as a major regional hub for all government services. 

There has been a lot of discussion on social media in recent weeks about the old Lions Park. There has been discussion between the senior executive of the Club and the Weipa Town Authority for a number of years in an endeavour to incorporate community needs with those of the Lions Club to establish a ‘new’ facility. We are very hopeful that following a recent presentation from the Club that we are close to a resolution; and that it may see the Lions partner with the WTA and other organisations in establishing community ‘club’

The WTA has completed a $30,000 upgrade to the television transmission infrastructure to facilitate the digital TV upgrade. A further $24,000 commitment has also been made by the WTA towards the supply of spare parts for transmission by both Rebel and Breeze as part of the broadcast licence. This is in total a $54,000 commitment to maintaining a reasonable level of community access to both digital television and radio. We sincerely hope that all residents are now enjoying much better service. 

As local and visiting ‘boaties’ have seen the exten-

sive upgrades to Rocky Point recreational boating facilities have now been completed (pictured below). This project exemplifies the WTA support for the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce’s “Growing Sport Fishing Tourism on Western Cape York”. The relocation and construction of new public boating infrastructure at Evans Landing is a priority project for the WTA, RTA and North Queensland Bulk Ports due to inherent safety concerns with the current site. I can advise that the WTA has committed a further $50,000 to the project; which now brings total project contributions to $950,000. Discussions relating to site location continue, with a number of options being explored.

Changes to electricity prices. From 1 July 2013, all customers in regional Queensland on the general residential tariff are paying more for electricity. The general residential tariff is now 29.40 cents per kilowatt hour. The service fee on this tariff, which gets deducted from available credit on your meter, will increase to 55.24 cents per day. If you have an electric hot water system, you may be connected to one of the cheaper Super Economy or Economy rates, which have increased to 13.60 cents and 19.85 cents per kilowatt hour. This extra cost means that your power card will not last as long. A $20 card may last up to three and a half days, and a $50 card may last up to eight and half days*. Please remember this when buying new cards. Your card meter will be adjusted for this increase when your meter reader visits in the coming months.

If you have any questions, please call Ergon Energy on 13 10 46. *Calculated on an average usage of 20kwh per day

Second edition of popular Cape York book released THE second edition of the popular book “The Ghost of Cape York” by Richard G. Tomkies, has just been released with slight additions and photographs applicable to the story, along with a revised new cover image. Originally inspired by a persistent rumor, many years ago, of an almost entire crashed Japanese plane found above high water mark on the Cape’s east coast, this book will appeal to all those readers who appreciate the remoteness of the Cape York Peninsula along with a good yarn. The story, which has a supernatural twist, begins in 1942 during the Second World War when a Japanese pilot, flying the new Ki-61 Hien model Zero fighter and a member of a then newly-created Air Corps based in Rabaul, New Guinea, decides on a whim, after a quick and decisive dogfight with a couple of American Hellcat fighter planes, to scout the eastern coastline of Cape York looking for a likely enemy target before returning back to base. This he duly finds, but his plane is unexpectedly

fired on by an Australian Coast Watcher and some American Naval personnel. The story continues some 60 years later when ‘Blue’ Stevens and a companion, Alex Beatie, both keen hunters and fishermen, go on a fishing and pig-hunting trip to a remote part of the Cape. Here they make an unusual discovery which connects Stevens to the war-time experiences of his grandfather, Lieutenant Art Stevens of the North Australian Observer Unit. The story has an unusual theme and ends with a supernatural ending. Readers can purchase this book along with others from the same author, including the best seller “Cannibals’ Gold” now in it’s fourth edition also set on the Cape York Peninsula and the popular little book of true short stories, “Aussie Outback Yarns,” and the latest non-fiction release“Captured… B a s e d o n t h e Tr u e Story of the Crew of the Ill-Fated Schooner ‘Nightingale’” from Weipa News and Sports, Archer River Road House and Lakeland Coffee House.

“Book of the Weak” reader giveaway IN “Book of the Weak”, Dr Moss Lane lives the so-called good life, with a busy medical practice, an attractive wife and a modern luxury home in the Melbourne suburbs. And yet despite all this, Moss is trying desperately to escape a reality many would aspire to. “Book of the Weak” examins the internal life of a man so weighed down by his past that he is cut adrift from his present. As the story, and Dr Lane’s life, unravels, a lack of attention to those around him has consequences for Moss, both comic and tragic. “Book of the Weak” is the engaging second novel from Melbourne author Joe Reich, and has wide appeal to lovers of comedic adult fiction. The Western Cape Bulletin has two copies of “Book of the Weak” (RRP $24.95) to giveaway to our readers. Just fill out the coupon on page 12 to be in the draw. Western Cape Bulletin July 17, 2013

Bowel cancer screening rates on the decline CaNCER Council Queensland is alarmed at new research showing bowel cancer screening rates declining, with only 33 per cent of eligible Queenslanders completing the free test. A cc o rding to fig ures released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare this week, participation in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program dropped in 2011/12, compared to the previous three years. In 2008-2011, 38 per cent of eligible Australians returned a completed bowel cancer screening test. In the latest report, 2011/12, participation dropped to just 35 per cent. The participation rate for eligible Queenslanders was alarmingly lower than the national average – at just 33 per cent.

About 980 people die from the disease. Queenslanders aged 50, 55, 60 and 65 are eligible to take part in the free National Bowel Cancer Screening program, while other Queenslanders can chat to their GP or pharmacist to access a test kit. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said bowel cancer screening tests were critical in ensuring early detection, and potentially saving lives. “In Queensland, bowel cancer is the third-highest cause of cancer death for both males and females,” Ms Clift said. “It’s crucial that if you are aged over 50, you participate in recommended bowel cancer screenings every two years, and discuss these screenings with your GP. “This simple test, known as a Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) has the power to save lives. “Bowel cancer is also known as one of the most preventable cancers.  Pioneering campaign to put a full stop to HIV in Queensland HIV DIAGNOSES in Queensland have doubled in the past 10 years and Ministerial Advisory Committee (MAC) on HIV/AIDS chairman Dr Darren Russell has launched a pioneering campaign to put an end to HIV in Queensland. Dr Russell said more needed to be done to stop rising HIV rates given the alarming trend of increasing diagnosis and to meet a target of 50 per cent reduction in HIV transmission by 2015. “We are determined to help drive the rate of new HIV infections down and this new campaign is paramount

to our work in this area,” Dr Russell said. “Putting a full stop to HIV is everyone’s business and we all have a role to play in the reduction of HIV rates in Queensland. “The E.N.D. YOU are never going to believe what happened to me this week! My K9 mum Crispy and I were foraging amongst the pot plants in our front garden when we happened across a long-dead skink. Boy, did it smell fantastic! We quickly took it inside and put it up on my mum and dad’s bed and proceeded to roll around on it – basking in it’s delicious odour. I wanted to make sure my mum and dad got their share of the perfume too so I paid special attention to rubbing the skink’s smell all over their pillows. Surprisingly, when my mum came into the bedroom she asked “what’s that terrible smell?” Even though I jumped up and down with excitement as I showed her the skink she seemed very unhappy with both myself and Crispy. Next thing I know, the skink’s in the bin and my

It is not a broad brush approach; it is about targeting specific audiences with tailored messages.” The MAC was introduced last year by Health Minister Lawrence Springborg to provide advice on

Five eminent indigenous Australians are being honoured by Australia Post in a new stamp issue. There are five domestic base-rate (60c) stamps featuring Shirley Smith AM, Neville Bonner AO, Oodgeroo Noonuccal, Eddie “Koiki” Mabo and Charles Perkins AO. This stamp issue honours five of these exceptional individuals who tirelessly campaigned for the rights of Indigenous people. Shirley Smith AM (1921-98), also known as “Mum Shirl”, was born on Erambie Mission, Cowra, New South Wales. She was a member of the Wiradjuri nation and was a committed activist for the justice and welfare of Aboriginal Australians. She was a founding member of several important organisations including the Aboriginal Legal Service and the Aboriginal Medical Service in the Sydney suburb of Redfern. Shirley received many awards for her work, and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) and a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). Neville Bonner AO (1922-99) was born on Ukerebagh Island on the Tweed River, New South Wales. In 1971 he became the first Aboriginal person to sit in the Commonwealth of Australia parliament. He also became the first Indigenous Australian to be elected to the parliament by popular vote. An elder of the Jagera people, Neville Bonner continued to be a strong advocate for Indigenous rights until his death in 1999. Oodgeroo Noonuccal (Kath Walker) (192093) was a descendant of the Noonuccal people of Minjerribah, North Stradbroke Island, Queensland. Oodgeroo was a poet, political activist, artist, educator and environmentalist. In 1962, she was instrumental in advocating for citizenship rights for Indigenous people. Oodgeroo received numerous awards in recognition of a life-

time commitment to Indigenous peoples and her outstanding contributions to Australian literature. She was awarded three honorary doctorates by universities within Australia. Eddie “Koiki” Mabo (1936-92) was born in the Meriam community of Las on Mer, known as Murray Island, in the Torres Strait, Queensland. In 1982 Eddie challenged land ownership laws in the High Court of Australia and won. The notion of terra nullius (land belonging to no one) was expelled from Australian law paving the way for the Native Title Act 1993 (Cwlth). In 1992, Eddie was posthumously awarded the Australian Human Rights Medal by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission. This year is the 20th anniversary of the Native Title Act. Charles Perkins AO (1936-2000) was born at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station Aboriginal Reserve in the Northern Territory. His parents were Arrernte and Kalkadoon people. In 1965 Perkins led the Freedom Rides, exposing racial discrimination throughout country NSW. From 1984 until 1988 he was Secretary of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, the first Aboriginal Australian to attain such a position in the bureaucracy. In his post-public service life Perkins played key roles on the boards of Aboriginal arts, sport and media organisations. He was a member of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC), serving as Deputy Chairman from 1994 to 1995, and was also a member of the Arrernte Council of Central Australia. The stamps were designed by Lynette Traynor of the Australia Post Design Studio, and are available from participating Australia Post retail outlets, via mail order on 1800 331 794 and online at auspost. com.au/stamps while stocks last.

This program has given me lots of ideas for what I want to do in the future and what I can do to help this community out. It’s boosted my self-confidence a lot, and it has helped me to speak in public. I’d like to see a lot more young people in the community do this program. – Student participant

Workshop enhances WESTERN Cape College and Napranum recently collaborated to implement The Student Leadership and Capability Program which is a further step in Napranum’s acclaimed ‘Whole of Community Change’. ‘Whole of Community Change’, designed by Annalise Jennings of Dynamic Exchange provides an opportunity to every indigenous community to develop its own unique blue print and is attracting the attention of government in relation to infrastructure and service delivery. The student’s program commenced in April of this year, with a motivational session where students stepped through goal setting and self development skills. Leaders of the Future is the title students selected for themselves at this session. Over 35 students undertook personality and career profiling, complemented by tailored coaching,

where they developed action plans to transition into employment or further studies. The object is to match years 10, 11 and 12 students to the most appropriate career path with input from the student, parent and teacher with progression being mapped from year to year. The three-day workshop, conducted last week, built on the assessment and coaching phases by developing each student’s potential and self belief. Students identified school improvements and initiatives and their ideas included healthier food options at the tuckshop, more support for extra curricular subjects, anti-bullying, more job options, and more discipline. To celebrate the program, about 50 people including students, parents, elders and teachers, gathered on Saturday at Bouchat with Rangers for a day of spear making, story telling and fishing.

LEADERS OF THE FUTURE: Student Leadership and Capability Program participants get creative while identifying school improvements and initiatives during the three-day workshop.

Annalise will continue to work with students, alongside their parents and teachers in three-way coaching sessions, facilitating life skills and specifically employability skills essential to achieving success, personal potential and contribution while at school and most importantly in the workforce. “I’m very excited about the progress these talented young people have made and emphasise the importance of the ongoing support of parents and educators to build on their success,” Annalise said. “I commend the initiative of the Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council (NASC) in the support it has shown to its community and its students.” NASC deputy mayor Margie Adidi said she had seen changes in the community. “People are happy and they are talking. “The student program is about

the creation of successful dreams. By understanding the dreams of our students and the importance of trust and bonding, the Western Cape College can add value to its relationship with the Napranum community. “This must happen for our community to move forward. It’s a bright future. It’s starting now, and it can only get better.” Leon Proud, Western Cape College principal said the changes he had seen in the students involved in the program had been exceptional. “This program, in partnership with the NASC, has made an impact greater than any other before it,” he said. “There is nothing better than hearing the students articulate the future they want and their plan in how they are going to achieve it. “All of our students would benefit from being involved in this program.”

The workshop was creative, interactive and good fun. This program has helped me a lot, it’s taught me a lot of values about myself and about others and how to respect them. I’d recommend this program to anyone – it’s great, and you have a lot of support. – Student participant

The Financial Worries of a Critical Illness It can take years of treatment to recover from serious illnesses such as cancer or heart disease. This is long enough to put you into financial hardship. So if you think that life insurance alone is enough life cover for you, it may be time to rethink your insurance needs. Your chances of getting a critical illness Unless someone in your family has been diagnosed with a critical illness such as cancer, heart disease or stroke, you may think that it won’t happen to you. So what are your chances of suffering from a critical illness? The following facts and figures from Australian national health organisations reveal that the chances may be higher than you’d like to think: • 1 in 6 people will suffer a stroke in their lifetime and it is a leading cause of disability [1] • 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85 [2] • 2 out of 3 families will be affected by cardiovascular disease, and disability resulting from the disease prevents 1.4 million people from living a full life.[3]

Many people now survive serious illnesses that used to be fatal thanks to advances in medicine and technology. For instance, the National Cancer Council has reported that the survival rate for many common cancers has increased by 30% in the past two decades. It may not cost you your life, but it will cost you Significant costs of treatment and time off work have the potential to put you into financial hardship, especially if you’re finances are already stretched by mortgage or rental repayments and day-today living expenses. Get cover for peace of mind Trauma insurance, which is also known as critical illness cover, pays you a lump sum benefit when you suffer a critical condition specified in your insurance policy. This benefit is paid regardless of your ability to return to work. For more information on personal insurances, call Adam Woodhouse, your local Infocus Financial Planner, on 0405 708 201 or email adam.woodhouse@ infocus.com.au. Mark Ch 15 v 33: When they crucified Jesus the soldiers gambled for his clothes using dice, a common practise where the soldiers on duty at the time of the crucifixions gets first claim to the clothes stripped off those being crucified. From midday until three o’clock the Bible reports that, “the whole country was covered in darkness”, and Matthew is the one who reported, “the curtain hanging in the Temple was torn in

two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split apart…” (Matt Ch 27 v 51). Now if nothing else had caused people to realise that Jesus was someone special to God, these weird happenings would have had them thinking real hard. In their Hebrew Scriptures, darkness appearing at odd times, and earthquakes was God’s way of showing that he was angry and placing judgement on his people. Amos Ch 8 vs 7-9

reads: “The Lord, the God of Israel, has sworn, “I will never forget their evil deeds. And so the earth will quake, and everyone in the land will be distressed. The whole country will be shaken; it will rise and fall like the Nile River. The time is coming when I will make the sun go down at midday and the earth grow dark during the day. I the Sovereign Lord have spoken.” Fear the Lord in reverence.

AFL wrap-up with Dallas DING Dong, the witch is dead, Richmond finally get a win in the tropics, albeit a close one! After selling six home games in as many years to play in Darwin and Cairns, the Tigers are sixth time lucky! With a 9 point victory in a wet and windy Cairns over the injury ravaged Suns, Richmond finally look the goods for finals this year! They managed to grind out the win in a difficult low scoring game, one which they probably would have lost in recent years. Not before giving their coach and fans (one in particular who drove down from Weipa and would have almost needed an ambulance if they capitulated again) yet another scare with 3 minutes left, giving a relatively easy free kick which should have got the Suns to within 3 points. They sprayed the shot, the Weipa Richmond Fan Club rejoices and the Tigers have cemented 6th spot on the ladder heading into the latter part of the season! The Brisbane Lions had yet another come from behind win at the Gabba, this time downing North Melbourne, who at one stage held a 30 point lead. Many are calling this the end of the Kangaroo’s finals chances. However there is only two wins separating 8th to 13th on the ladder. North are still in the race if they can lift mentally after so many demoralising close losses. The Lions are now on 24 points with North and Adelaide and they have a soft run home so they are also still a chance of finals action. Port Adelaide hold 8th spot on the ladder but they can’t afford a slip up with Carlton, West Coast, North, Adelaide and Brisbane breathing down their necks. Collingwood had a good win over Adelaide and the Hawks were too strong for Port. Geelong decimated the Demons while Carlton got over the top of the Saints. Essendon were too strong for the Bulldogs. In the Derbies the Swans flogged GWS by 130 points and Fremantle took the bragging rights over the Eagles in the West. Round 17 bounces off with North and Carlton desperate to keep their finals chances alive. The Hawks take on the Bulldogs and GWS will struggle against the Bombers. The Gold Coast will need extra police with the Collingwood cheer squad coming to town and St Kilda visit Port Adelaide. Melbourne could do us all a favour and upset the Lions for a change. The Tiger army will be out in force to see them play Fremantle at the MCG. The Adelaide Crows will almost be out of the finals race if they lose to Geelong and Sydney travels to West Coast to continue their rivalry. My tips- Carlton, Hawthorn, Essendon, Collingwood, Port Adelaide, Brisbane, Richmond, Geelong, Sydney. (And I’ll tip that I’m going to cop a lot from Richmond fans with years of frustration and suffering as the Suns ruined their previous seasons, despite my kindness in not rubbing it in at all. No doubt the resident Lions faithful will be back to their smug selves this week again too). That’s the wrap! Dallas

THE weekend leading into the State of Origin decider has seen some teams suffer the consequences throughout the round. Friday night’s match was a close encounter, seeing the Sharks beat the Broncos by 1 point. Then on Saturday the in-form Panthers kept their run going with a win over the luckless Eel’s. Sunday’s game was the upset of the round, seeing the Bulldogs smash the Storms quite convincingly. The Storm were without some key players due to Origin duties. Then Monday night’s game bought the round to a close with the Sea Eagles running away with the win over the struggling Cowboys. The State of Origin decider will lead into round 19, with the Mighty Maroons looking for another victory over the NSW Blues. Round 19 opens on Friday with one game being played between the Tigers and the Warriors. Then on Saturday there are two games being played, with the Raiders versing the Eels and the Roosters taking on the Sharks. Sunday will also have two games, as the Panthers take on the Knights and the Sea Eagles go head to head with the Titans. Monday night’s game will be between the Rabbitohs and the Dragons. Spectators and competitors thrilled by Weipa Dirt Kart titles LAST weekend’s inaugural Queensland Dirt Kart Titles attracted thousands of spectators to the Weipa Speedway to enjoy three days of fast and furious action. Interstate competitors were blown away by the kind of event our small remote community was able to produce. Even at their largest titles (events of 300-plus karts) their spectators are made up simply from the family and pit crews of the competitors. They could not believe the support from the community who just came to see the racing. This event was a massive undertaking for the Weipa Dirt Kart titles committee and could not have been done without the generous sponsorship upon which our town relies for these kinds of events. Seaswift and Northline freight companies combined as our naming rights and platinum sponsors to get the 10 interstate competitors and their karts from Western Australia and South Australia and return, as well as provide freight for all those items needed from out of town. Without this sponsorship the event could never have been what it was, so thank you very much to these companies for their amazing support our appreciation knows no bounds. Thank you to our gold sponsors Qantas, Weipa Caravan Park & Camping Ground and Weipa Rent a Car for flying, driving and accommodating the members of the AIDKA executive committee who came in for the weekend to support Weipa Dirt Karts with our first titles event with their organisation. Matty from NQCEC built a track that amazed the southern competitors and ensured their return next year. Hopefully you were out on Saturday night to see Westy’s much pined for fireworks, provided for us by ENZED, and greatly appreciated by the massive Saturday night crowd. Gold sponsors Goodline assisted with the amazing custom trophies while BIS Industries helped us with our event merchandise. Thank you Stretch and Giembra from the Western Cape Bulletin for putting us in front of everyone and saturating the town with promotion for our event. Our silver sponsors where Hastings Deering, Programmed Integrated Workforce, Rio Tinto Alcan, Carpentaria Contracting, Kowari and Cleanaway who helped us with all the smaller but crucial items that make sure an event runs smoothly such as lighting, sanitation and cash support. Our bronze sponsors, Weipa Gifts & Music, Weipa Hardware, and Weipa Real Estate helped with our raffle prizes. Thank you to Weipa Business Equipment for printing some programs for us, and also Weipa Bakery and Weipa

Gourmet Meats for their support with our fundraising. Thank you to Weipa 4WD & Camping for displaying our standard setting promo video and Serco for providing buses and drivers to help get people out the event safely – this service was greatly appreciated. To all the community groups that came along in some capacity or other to help – Weipa Wildlife Care Inc and the Weipa Fishing Classic committee – as always, community groups keep our town thriving. Hopefully the weekend was a success for our stallholders – Weipa Kindy, Fun Food Fairy and Weipa Gymnastics, and we will see them again next year for bigger and better things. The list of individuals that assisted over the weekend is just endless. The Weipa Motocross Club volunteered to stand on the track all weekend, waving flags and keeping the racing smooth. Chas, Jordy, Cameron and Michael – you guys were impressive. Jarrod McCombe and Tony Smith were also on the track making sure AIDKA were happy with our racing. In the grids, Kori, Redman, Lobs and Jordan kept the ladies sorted into racing order and made sure the racers hit the track safely and smoothly. Others such as Mary Hindmarsh, Laurel Smith, Vicki Jaensch, Ken McCombe, Nadja Pilkington, Trent and Rachel Gordon went above and beyond the call, considering that most are not even club members. Thank you Peter McCulkin who kept the crowd informed and entertained for the three days – I believe it may have cost him a kart or two though! If we have missed you from this list, we apologise profusely – your support is not unnoticed or unappreciated – thank you. Special mention to Western Australian driver Wade Ingerson (kart 82) who broke Weipa Dirt Karts no roll-over record with a very entertaining flip and turtle slide. “It’s like a carnival and I’m the ride” Wade was heard to say. Finally, thank you to those in the community who came out and supported us – we ‘ll be back next year as Weipa Dirt Karts works to return Weipa to the great motorsport tradition that has fallen away over the years, when we were in the spotlight for events such as the Queensland 500 and Croc Run Motocross Enduro. Congratulations to all those who now hold an inaugural Queensland Dirt Kart title and plate – display them proudly and loudly. – 2013 Queensland Dirt Kart titles committee

Raiders’ road trip to Cape Cluster round

WELL-DESERVED BREAK: The Weipa Raiders side take a break at the Mitchell River on their way to Kowanyama. Alf Wilson story

AN under-strength Weipa Raiders side travelled 600km to Kowanyama last Saturday for round two of the Cape Cluster rugby league competition. A large crowd turned out at the Aboriginal community to see home side Kowanyama Wallabies, the Raiders, Lockhart River Scorpions, Coen Colts and Pormpuraaw Crocs compete. Napranum had withdrawn before the day. Weipa Raiders spokesman Karl Adam, also the locally based QRL Northern Division Development Officer, said his side made the eight hour trip over mostly rough dirt roads in three vehicles. “It was far from our best side and we only had 11 players. Last Friday we drove a long way and camped overnight before arriving at Kowanyama on game day,” Mr Adams said. Some of the usual Raiders players could not make the trip

because of work commitments. Mr Adams said although Raiders lost their two games to Lockhart River and Pormpuraaw he was encouraged by the effort put in by the boys. “Our second game against Pormpuraaw was a close loss and we had three fill-in players from Kowanyama to make up numbers. We arrived back in Weipa on Sunday,” Mr Adams said. Mr Adams lined up at halfback with the liability of an injured ankle and he was amongst the best Raiders players according to some opponents. Other good Raiders players were centres Stewart Pryce and Walter Convent, forwards Andrew Sampson and Ryan Kemp along with fullback Chris Namok. Youngster Sampson represented Cape/Torres in the Foley Shield competition at Townsville back in 2009 and will be an asset for Raiders in coming rounds and the finals series if they qualify.

Kowanyama coach David Kennedy said that about 1000 people were at the local school grounds to witness some top class football. “We didn’t lose a game but the other sides all had good players. The morning after everybody here was talking about the football,” Kennedy said. Mr Kennedy said that rugby league was the undoubted winner. The Wallabies had an enormous advantage as most of the visiting sides had to travel long distances to get to Kowanyama. Kennedy rated Kowanyama’s best players of the day as props Dale Brumby and Terry Tommy, five eighth Stanley David, halfback Elron Lawrence and winger Tyson Smiler. David represented Northern United which lost the recent game to Queensland Outback in Cairns and is a classy footballer. Round three of the Cluster competition will be at Lockhart River on August 10.

Pride players selected for Queensland Residents side TWo players from Northern Pride’s table-topping Intrust Super Cup team have been selected in the Queensland Residents side to take on New South Wales Residents in a curtain-raiser to State of origin 3 tonight (Wednesday, July 17). Fullback Hezron Murgha has been named in the backline, while Pride teammate Ben Spina has been included in the second row for the annual representative clash. Four other Pride players were also initially selected for the Queensland Residents side, but had to withdraw from the game due to various reasons. Pride coach Jason Demetriou said Murgha and Spina fully deserved their call-ups after impressing during the 2013 Intrust Super Cup season. “Their selection is reward for not only the players, but for the team as a whole, so it’s a great honour for everyone associated with the club,” he said. “We’ve been going well this year, and it’s fantastic those players have now been given the chance to play rep footy.”

Fullback Murgha, 27, has had a memorable season, scoring 13 tries in 15 games and signing a two-year NRL deal with the North Queensland Cowboys last week. “Hezzy has consistently been our best player this year and probably the player of the competition, so it’s good reward for his performances,” said Demetriou. Spina, 25, has played in all 16 Pride games this season, and won two XXXX Man Of The Match awards out of the Pride’s four live WIN/Channel 9 TV games in 2013. “I’ve got a lot of time for Benny Spina, who is one of the most underrated players in the Intrust Super Cup,” Demetriou said. “He’s excellent with the ball and in defence, and is a workhorse but without a lot of quality. “I’ve said it before, but Benny certainly wouldn’t look out of place in an NRL side.” Former Wynnum-Manly Seagulls and current Sydney Roosters under 20s mentor Paul Green will coach the Queensland Residents.

Remote region players selected in under 14 AFL representative side PRomISINg Aussie Rules talent is emerging from Queensland’s most remote communities with six players from Cape York and the Torres Strait selected in the Queensland Country Kookaburras under 14s team recently. The Cape York Crusaders won three out of four games at a regional carnival held in Mackay in early July, narrowly losing to the Cairns Lions in their final match by two points in what was an exciting grand final. The Crusaders had never played as a team

before and held their first training session in Cairns on Thursday before embarking on a 10-hour road trip to Mackay early Friday morning. The trip was the first time Saibai Island’s George Wosomo had ever been further south than Weipa and several players had not travelled as far south as Mackay before. Coach Kane Richter says the team’s effort was outstanding throughout the trip. “The group was fantastic and really exceeded my expectations

as far as performance,” he said. “It was one of the best under 14 groups we’ve had for a while. “It’s a hectic trip but it was a relatively easy group to work with because their leadership and attitude was fantastic.” Myron Ahwang, Jonah Lui, Justin Hill, Laken Pearson, Lewis Fauid and Charles Gibuma will play for the Queensland Country Kookaburras. Jonah Lui and Lewis Fauid won the Crusaders Most Valuable Player (MVP) medal.

 from page 32 Colour wise, when I was working in at Tackle World Nuclear Chicken and white were the biggest sellers, but I think any colour would work as long as you have it in the fish’s face, so don’t be afraid to experiment with other colours. Another by-catch can be Cobia and Mackerel which will take the plastics as well, but you can be bitten off by the Mackerel sometimes. In the rivers there is a chance to nail a few Barra taking live baits and out on the flats with drains running into them as this is where the warmer water will be. As well as Barra there have been some hooter Blue Salmon in the 90 cm mark. Up on the rock bars you should find Grunter and Jacks taking baits and soft plastics as well and there is all ways a chance of a Barra. Mission River Bridge has been the most reliable spot in the rivers and some nice Barra have been taken by Josh Garnet, Craig Elphick and Stuart Russell on live bait and cut bait. There have been some Bream here also taking small pieces of Prawn and they put up a good tussle on light line. As I said there’s not much to report so I wanted tell you that if you can’t fish you should be checking your hooks and split rings so that when you hook a big fish the tackle you are using is up to the challenge. Sharp hooks penetrate better than rusty ones. Check your line to make sure your leader knots are up to it, and most of all make sure your reels are serviceable. When cleaning your reels don’t drown them in water, just lightly rinse and wipe down with a cloth that has Inox sprayed on it to protect the reel. So get to it . . . if you can’t service your own reels get it done by an expert. ‘Til next week, smooth seas, calm breezes and tight lines.

Now is the time to check your tackle THERE has been no change in the current weather patterns and consequently the fishing reports have been thin on the ground. So, this week I will give the reports and then talk about fishing and tackle. I haven’t had any briefs from outside but when the winds and seas drop I would expect some good fishing out on the reefs with Mackerel and Tuna on the surface and Fingermark, Tuskers and Trout starting to make a better showing. There should be some good Jews around on the deeper reefs and one method that has been successful is to use seven-inch Gulps on an appropriate weight jig head.
