Croc spotted at Putts Palms WEIPA social media was abuzz over the Easter break with the reporting of a saltwater crocodile in the creek at Putts Palms. The generally shallow creek is a popular place for locals to cool off but the sighting is a timely reminder that crocodiles can be found in any body of water in Cape York. A ‘recent crocodile sighting’ sign was erected following the sighting and Weipa Police Ofﬁcer in Charge, Senior Sergeant Brett Jenkins advised people not to be complacent around our waterways. “Local people of Weipa, Mapoon and Napranum; you must always consider a saltwater crocodile could be in any water source or location in this area. “Since I can remember here in Weipa as a young boy there has been reports of crocs in the Lakes, or behind Putts or at Vyces Crossing etc.  continued page 6

THE Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation is currently seeking Expressions of Interest from anyone who would be willing to help run and administer a Friends of the Foundation group in Weipa. The Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation is supported by a number of regional fundraising groups know as Friends of the Foundation (FoF). FoF group volunteers raise money through fundraising event and activities within their own communities. Every dollar they raise is spent on purchasing muchneeded equipment to improve health care services at their own local hospitals and other local health care facilities. Friends of the Foundation groups can make a real difference to the quality of health care in their communities. During the past ﬁnancial year, FoF groups at Innisfail, Cooktown, Mareeba, Gordonvale and Cow Bay raised a total of more than $140,500. A Commemorative Journal, 1974-2014, by branch founding member Colleen Taylor, (pictured below), will be launched by Member for Cook, David Kempton, during the night. Colleen said sales of the book had exceeded expectations, such has been the interest from the community across

L E O N Ye a t m a n , C h i e f Executive Officer, Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council has announced that Mapoon has reignited its housing and construction programme. The new housing for Mapoon is significant for the Shire as it is an added boost to the housing stock and general community infrastructure. In addition to the increased housing stock and integrated employment strategy, the project has also been designed to further benefit the community. These benefits include new assets, training opportunities for locals and economic spin-offs that will help boost the capacity of the Mapoon community. This is the first part of a five-year development plan for Mapoon. During this time the aim is to address housing and other infrastructure issues through significant programs (funded by the State and Federal

RSS have utilised a new initiative from the Govern-

ment called the Registered Trade Skills Pathway to offer an alternative to traditional apprenticeship but with a Certiﬁcate III outcome, offering flexible training solutions within community Mr Yeatman conﬁrmed that Bryant Constructions have been awarded the contract for the initial build and all partners are supportive of advancing Mapoon. “Bryant Constructions are very pleased to be given the opportunity to work in the Mapoon community on this project,” Jason Smith, Indigenous Partnerships Manager, Bryant Constructions said. Bryant’s company ethos for over 20 years is to engage local people to ensure employment and training on all their sites, and they will also be employing a local cook to supervise all catering for the work site.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian women (1 per cent of breast cancer is in men), with about 40 new diagnoses each day. Through research, supported by the $19.8 million funding to NBCF by Mother’s Day Classic since the event began in 1998, the five year survival rate for breast cancer patients has grown to 89 per cent. But, with research, more can be done. This year, organisers are encouraging participants not just to enter, but to try their hand at fundraising. A NEW James Cook University project is helping assess whether we are winning the war on informing people about plastic waste and its devastating impacts on the marine environment. JCU researchers are conducting surveys, both in person and online, to help gauge people’s attitudes toward disposing of materials, plastics in particular, and its impacts on tropical ecosystems. Associate Professor Mark Hamann, from JCU’s School of Earth & Environmental Sciences, said marine debris was a key conservation issue for tropical environments and a threat to many species, especially marine turtles. “The challenge is to find effective ways to change human behaviour with regard to the consumption and disposal of debris, especially plastics, “ Associate Professor Hamann said. “Social marketing offers frameworks and processes to encourage this kind of human behaviour change.” “The project will generate data that can be used in the

development of more effective behaviour change programs in environmental protection.” Associate Professor Hamann said the issue of marine debris had been identified by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the Federal Department of Environment and Water Resources as both a key conservation issue for tropical marine ecosystems and a major threat to species including marine turtles and dugongs. “The use of social marketing to address sustainability issues is growing and is particularly focused on linking the business sector and consumers to a range of environmental and social issues,” he said. The project is designed to help develop effective social marketing campaigns within the tourism sector in tropical Australia focused on wider aspects of environmental protection. “Over recent years, the problem of marine debris, speciﬁcally plastic pollution, has become a prominent issue concerning many government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and scien-

tiﬁc communities around the world. “As productivity and consumer buying continues to increase, the amount of plastic that makes its way into the marine environment also continues to rise at an alarming rate. As such, marine debris is now a ubiquitous problem worldwide.” Associate Professor Hamann said synthetic marine debris such as plastic was increasingly recognised worldwide as signiﬁcant risk for many types of marine wildlife. “Although plastics have only existed for just over a century, by 1988, 30 million tons of plastic were produced annually, and their versatility has rapidly caused them to become a part of everyday life in developed countries around the world. “As plastic has become more prevalent in society and new uses have developed, the quantity of plastic debris entering the marine environment has undergone a corresponding increase. “Solutions to plastic pollution need to start with changes in consumer behaviours includ-

ing selecting products with less plastic packaging, avoiding single use plastic items, and more careful disposal of rubbish.” Associate Professor Hamann said traditional government and NGO responses in this area had relied heavily on information delivery and public education campaigns. “Information is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for behaviour change. Persuasive strategies such as social marketing have proven to be more successful than solely information-based strategies.” The project involves three stages, starting with a survey conducted in key locations in the Townsville region to collect data from local residents and tourists. It will measure awareness of, attitudes towards, and actions related to marine debris, threats to marine turtles and consumer behaviour related to plastics. WE are studying the book of Acts and we are looking at Ch 3 at the moment, carrying on from when the Lord Jesus rose from the dead, was seen by over five hundred people, and ordered his followers not to take out the gospel message just yet. They were to wait for the coming of the Holy Spirit, which happened after fifty days, an event that had great noise and signs. Ch 3 reports on Peter and John healing and addressing people in the Temple. Of God’s plan that the Messiah would be a Suffering Servant Messiah rather than a man of war like David who would lead the people to war against the Romans. Their very own Scriptures foretell of this if they would look properly. (Read all of Isaiah Ch 52 v 13 – Ch 53all).

Ch 53 v 10 says, The Lord says, “It was my will that he should suffer; His death was a sacriﬁce to bring forgiveness. And so he will see his descendants; He will live a long life, And through him my purpose will succeed.” They must see that the name of Jesus Christ is very important and powerful in the world and the spirit world, where when Christians and people genuinely seeking God call on that name for help, or for healing to happen, it does. And the devil and his demons ﬂee from that name. As Jewish people they must also remember that being God’s specially chosen people, they will be the instruments in bringing God’s blessings to the whole world. Cape York explorer: John Embley

OnE of Cape York’s early, but perhaps lesser known, explorers was John Embley, who was a surveyor with the Queensland Department of Lands. Mainly at the request of the Queensland Government, Embley made a number of journeys of exploration through Cape York from the 1880’s, adding to the information gained and recorded by various previous explorers. His journeys and surveys included inland from Princess Charlotte Bay (1883-4); Coleman to Kendall River (1884); Coen River (1884); the lower Mitchell River (1886); the Stewart River (1895-6) as well as the Weipa area. In 1891, Embley selected land at Red Island Point and built a homestead which he was to name Thornbury. His main aim was to take advantage of the developing cattle trade, with stock being killed and refrigerated at Red Island and then shipped to Thursday Island. In 1895, he became a partner in York Downs Station, which had just

been amalgamated from various previous land sections. In November of that year he navigated a new river in the vicinity of York Downs which was later to be called the Embley River. This newly navigated river was expected to improve access to York Downs with a landing place being established only some nine miles from the station. Embley’s business interests were diversified when he developed auriferous reefs on Possession Island, not far from where Captain James Cook had landed in 1770, raising the British flag. As late as 1913, Embley was still involved in exploring and surveying activities, this time in the Lockhart River area. During this later trip, he further surveyed the Lockhart as well as surveying farmlands which the government was keen to see developed. In addition to the Embley River being named in his honour, the Embley Range, located to the north of Claremont Point also bears his name.

t December 1864, in the first year of operation of the Queensland Police Force, there were 27 ordinary Police stations with 151 foot and mounted officers, and 16 native Police camps of 136 European officers and indigenous troopers. Twenty of the ‘ordinary Police force’ stations averaged four officers each, the bigger stations like Brisbane, Ipswich, Rockhampton and Maryborough had larger staff numbers. Native Police camps averaged between seven and 17 men, large camps like Rockhampton could have up to 27 men of both officers and troopers. As policing reached across the state more and more stations were opened usually in small towns of less than 300 people or in places that were growing due to the building of train lines or the discovery of gold. By December 1884, twenty years after the inauguration of the Police Force, there were 155 stations with 657 Police Officers and 182 indigenous troopers and trackers. There was also a growth in the number of single officer stations. In 1884, 36 stations were operated by single Police Officers, of these six were assisted in their duties by an indigenous tracker. Running a Police station with one officer was a daunting task. Often there was no station building and one had to be rented or moves made to purchase something suitable. Married officers were generally not sent to single officer stations as there was generally no accom-

Her tasks could also involve feeding and cleaning up after prisoners in the lock-up. The good will of the community was necessary if an officer was to be able to carry out his duties effectively while in town and then to be confident that nothing untoward would happen while he was away checking the rest of his beat by horse.

Communities were often loath to let an officer go when he was transferred away and often took up petitions and wrote letters to the Police Commissioner begging for the officer to remain in town. Long standing officers were often presented with gifts and highly decorated letters of thanks from their community. There are still a number of stations run by single officers, in small communities across the state, all be it in more comfortable circumstances than available in the past.

There was no word from you with Malaita so I can only assume and hope you are well and surviving the wilds of the islands and trade is good. I ﬁnd it hard to believe that it is now 18 months since you were at home. On my personal endeavours, my wanting to become a journalist with the Sydney Morning Herald has not eased but Mr Manning, who seems to control all editorial jobs at the paper, says persistence is the ﬁrst mark of a newspaperman. I applied again in January. I think he takes some joy in refusing me but I should continue to apply at each intake. I cannot understand why I should be made to wait; I feel my writing exceeds the abilities of many at the paper. Whilst journalism is my desire, Mr Manning pays considerable attention to my illustrations and says maturity of years only enhances the artist’s view. I would consider the life of an illustrator if that were my door to the newsroom. Nonetheless, I will keep trying and for the time will continue at the stock and station agents which although tedious, does afford me insight to the heart of our country, and the people I encounter are rich in stories of the bush and land. I will be 20 at the next newspaper intake and should

I fail I fear may be too old to start what will be four years as a junior. Perhaps I will be mature enough for Mr Manning to consider me as an illustrator. You will notice I have taken to typing my letter. This is a most exciting development. I have wanted a machine for some time. Father secured an almost new Corona 3 portable machine from an American tobacconist in George Street. The fellow supplies Father’s tobacco stock and recently visited America. He paid 50 American dollars for the machine, some £11, but found it completely unsatisfactory for compiling ledgers upon his return. Father, sporting my journalistic ambitions, offered £8 which the fellow jumped at. It is a splendid machine and accompanies me everywhere. I will repay Father at a rate of 5 shillings each pay. I have included a cutting from the Herald of 25 March which I hope brings a smile. The 18th Infantry Riﬂe shoot (seven shots over 500 yards) was won by Corpl. Holmes with 33 points. I recall his indignation with your last two shots at the Area Shoot. You would have thought the wager was £1000, not a couple of quid. When he marched off muttering “lucky bugger” we were all folded with laughter. You

are still regarded as the ﬁnest marksman. The Smallpox epidemic noted in my earlier journal continues to cause concern, and I urge caution if meeting passengers arriving from any port in Australia. It continues to spread and it is our good fortune only that the disease is considered by the health experts as mild. All in the family have now been administered the free vaccination. I look forward to again seeing you, and in the meanwhile trust you will ﬁnd the journal enjoyable and informative. What is ANZAC Day? From the City of Sydney RSL website AT dawn on April 25, 1915, the first of around 20,000 young Australian and New Zealand men landed on Turkey’s Gallipoli Peninsula, near the site of the ancient city of Troy. Instead of the expected flat beach, they found themselves faced with steep cliffs and an entrenched, well armed and determined enemy lying in wait. Those that survived the horrific carnage on arrival faced over eight months on the beaches and cliffs of Gallipoli. Conditions were appalling and they were under almost constant bombardment. Both sides pinned down the other with sniper fire and shelling, and quickly dug kilometres of trenches for shelter. These surviving “diggers”, as the Australians called themselves, hung on throughout the ensuing statemate until they were evacuated on December 20, 1915. In these eight months of World War One alone, 8,141 had died and more than 18,000 had been wounded. Unlike the European armies of that time, the “1st Australian Division” and the compos-

2014 marks the 100 year anniversary of the beginning of WW1, and 2015 marks the 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli landing.

Join the 2015 ANZAC centenary commemorations SEVENTY Queensland students and 10 chaperones will now be able to witness the historic ANZAC Day centenary commemoration at Gallipoli in 2015, almost double the original allocation. The extra places are part of the Federal Government’s nation-wide allocation of 400 student and chaperone places to states and territories, based on their number of federal electorates. “These young Queenslanders will be incredibly fortunate to be part of the centenary celebrations – a moving tribute to the ultimate sacriﬁce made by ANZAC soldiers one hundred years ago,” Queensland Premier Campbell Newman said. “This special trip will be made possible by

$442,000 of funding by the Department of Education, Training and Employment to supplement my original $1 million, three-year election commitment.” The students and chaperones will join widows and direct descendants of ANZAC soldiers, the veteran community, ofﬁcial representatives, and 6,000 Australians and 2,000 New Zealanders drawn from a ballot. The 2015 Premier’s ANZAC Prize will determine who will be part of this unique experience and Year 8 to 11 student are eligible to enter the competition. Students are required to submit an original, two to five minute multimedia presentation addressing how the ANZAC tradition shaped Australia, why it is

still important and how future generations will keep the tradition alive. History experts will assist in shortlisting entries and representatives from the Returned and Services League, the Australian Defence Force and an ANZAC descendant will select the 70 student winners. WHAT a weekend of footy we had starting with the battle of the Big Cats on Thursday night. Our human Mum and Dad were still in Port Douglas so I got the felines that I am forced to live with on the couch (I shouted the treats) to see big Browny play his 250th for the Lions and he didn’t disappoint taking vintage marks and booting four majors. But without four of their stars and 10 kids with less than 25 games under their belts it was always going to be an uphill battle especially with Jumping Jack on fire at the other end. The Lions not only seem to have both hands firmly on the wooden spoon but have earnt the reputation of the only team in VFL/AFL history to never win a quarter of football in the opening month of the season. The big Travis Cloke made sure that the Roos were never in the hunt as he kicked 4.3 in the first half. Collingwood showed their spirit of old and actually looked the complete package on Saturday afternoon. One of the big talking points was on Saturday afternoon on the couch with my human Mum and Dad watching the Swans run over the Dockers at the SCG. This was one of the fastest games I have watched in a long time. Believe it or not but my human Mum was actually barracking for the 10 million dollar man. This is something that caught us all by surprise after the ranting that went on in the off season about Buddy (I had a canine friend named Buddy once). The Power travelled over to the West to take the four points from the Eagles and put themselves second on the ladder. I know that Kochie is very happy with this. It is amazing how you lift the financial burden and everything falls into place as they can now concentrate on footy and not are they going to get paid at the end of the week. I can’t believe that the Sainters knocked over the Bombers after being smashed by Adelaide last week. St Nick, Lenny Hayes and Leigh Montagna stood up and led the way as real champions of the game do. Sunday saw the Crows monster the Giants as Dangerfield showed how dangerous he can be and Scotty Thompson who played his 250th game showed he has not lost anything with 38 possessions. With the Suns looking like the collywobbles of old kicking 20 behinds in a eight point victory over the Dees it was once again the little master Gazza that showed the way for his young Suns who are growing each week. The Suns have now moved into the top eight and with GWS this week at Metricon they could very well cement their spot in the eight. The skivvy wearer steered the Blues to a win over my Doggies in a drama filled match seeing the six minute man Juddy rip his hammie after coming back from an Achilles injury (I think he needs to do preseason with us on the beach doing sprinting and species chasing the Frisbee). Curnow broke his leg and Bell did his finger. The hoodoo has broken after the Blues were at 0-4 for the first time in 25 years. I told you last week to book your seat for the Cats and Hawks battle and it didn’t disappoint. With Stevie J and the big Tommahawk at their best the game was an absolute specatacle with neither side giving in until the Cats kicked away in the last finally zeroing their radar as both teams kicked a heap of behinds as well as their share of out on the fulls. Sunday arvo is the next blockbuster with 1v2 again but this time it is the Cats v Power at Adelaide Oval. Front seat on the couch, Scoop The Newshound

Ac t i o n p a c ke d Easter EASTER weekend was full of action packed footy for everyone, starting with a few thrilling match-ups on Good Friday. The Bulldogs beat the Rabbitohs in a close encounter, the Broncos showed a dominant display against the Knights, and the Sea Eagles narrowly beat the Cowboys. On Saturday there were a couple of close battles with the Dragons getting a win over the Warriors and the Roosters holding out the Sharks to get the win. On Easter Sunday the Raiders produced some form with an upset over the Storm. Then on Easter Monday there were two great match-ups with the Tigers beating the Eels and the Panthers winning against the Titans in very entertaining battles. Looking into Round eight we will see three games played on ANZAC Day, three on Super Saturday and two on Sunday. On Friday the first game is the Dragons and the Roosters, then the Storm play the Warriors, and lastly the Broncos take on the Rabbitohs. On Saturday the Sharks look for a win over the Panthers, the Cowboys will look to wrangle the slithering Eels and the Bulldogs look to hold their magnificent form against the Knights. Local clubs help shift focus from alcohol LEICHHARDT MP Warren Entsch has highlighted the great work of local sports clubs in Weipa who are helping to reduce binge drinking in the community and make clubs more welcoming to families. More than 40 clubs in Leichhardt are registered with the Australian Drug Foundation’s Good Sports program, which works with community clubs to help change their culture so they are more focused on young people and families, and less about drinking alcohol. These include the Weipa BMX Club. “This is a fantastic initiative and one that the Australian Government is pleased to support,” Mr Entsch said. “New research shows that the program really helps to reduce excessive drinking at sports clubs while keeping them financially viable. “It’s also a good investment for government, because for every dollar invested more than $4 is saved

The program grew by 18 per cent in 2013 and there are now 6300 Good Sports clubs in Australia. “In Leichhardt, these include a whole range of

clubs, representing sports as diverse as BMX, rugby league, Oz tag, hockey, surf lifesaving, soccer, bowls, athletics, dragon boating, netball and judo, located from Edmonton to Cairns, Port Douglas, Mossman, Weipa and the Torres Strait,” Mr Entsch said. “I congratulate these clubs for the leadership they are

Wonder what it was like in Blowen Bowen over easter? Couldn’t imagine it was any better than here. It was tent city at Penne and Mapoon but those who held the fort had a great break over Easter, including myself. Barra seems to be the flavour this week. There have been some top bites in the wee hours of the morning, and as they say the early bird gets the worm. Andoom, Big Bridge, Rocky Point, Evans Landing and Hornibrook are producing good catches of Barra on live bait, that’s if you can get past the Blue Salmon, as they are just about in plague proportions at the moment. I saw one visitor, fishing off the pad at Rocky Point, catch a Blue Salmon without any bait on his hook. Now that’s something you don’t see every day. Not only are the Blue Salmon harassing most anglers, the Threadies are also on the chew. Heresay has some over the metre – would love a pic emailed to me! Most Salmon will take just about any lure or bait you can throw at them but the biggest problem is they have very soft mouths, so use sharp hooks and don’t let slack line give them a chance of jumping off. If fishing from a boat Salmon usually swim against the tide after eating a bait, so don’t be surprised if you hear one jumping out behind you or your rod bends under the boat. Many rods have broken in this manner. Live Herring are the best especially if you can get onto some Cooktown Herring, easily recognised by the black spots along their lateral line. Some anglers braved the elements and wet a line in the

C A R P E N TA R I A G o l f Club will be hosting its annual Open with 36 holes being played over the weekend of May 2 and 3. Club Captain Brett Elms said it was great to have 2014 Club Patrons John and Catherine Kennedy on board as sponsors for the event. “This is a major event on the FNQ golﬁng calendar, and it is the sixth year of the Weipa Goodline Open,” Brett said. “The support and sponsorship John and Catherine, and Goodline provide not just to the Carpentaria Golf Club, but a lot of events in Weipa,

is exceptional, and greatly appreciated by all”. Golfers from Weipa, FNQ, other parts of Australia, and as far as Tasmania took part in the event last year, and most are expected to return this year to compete for the Overall Weipa Open trophy, as well as fabulous daily and overall prizes for both men’s and ladies divisions. Players, spectators, and members are set to have a good time beginning with player registration and a calcutta for the A grade players on Friday night which will be held at the club commencing from 6pm.

Play will commence Saturday morning, and will conclude with a Tropical themed “Tee to the 19th Hole” party, including a casual dinner, and presentation of Saturday’s daily winners. Dinner and presentations will commence at 6.45pm, followed by entertainment until 11.30pm. Following Sunday’s play, presentations to the daily and overall placegetters will occur. Members and visitors to the club not competing in the event are invited to come down and support the players and enjoy the facilities over the weekend, including Friday and Saturday nights.

Anyone who is not playing but would like to attend the informal tropical dinner on Saturday night prior to the presentation is required to RSVP with payment to the club by April 28. Cost for the dinner is $30 per person. Nominations close on Tuesday, April 29, and can be either emailed to mbelms@bigpond. com or left in the box at the club. The draw for the weekend will be on the noticeboard at the club, and on the club website Thursday evening. Enquiries regarding the open can be directed to Club Captain Brett Elms (0412 752 534).
