NEWS FOR EAST ARNHEM LAND, INCLUDING NHULUNBUY AND YIRRKALA

$2 – EDITION 888, 16 - 22 May 2012

A special day for all mums

Alicia Scobie and a very shy three-year-old Marlah celebrated Mother’s Day at the Walkabout on Sunday.

Man jailed for life for woman’s brutal murder

A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to jail for life for the murder of a 38-year-old mother of two in Nhulunbuy last year. Wayne William RobertsBarlow was convicted of slashing the woman’s throat from ear to ear, causing her to bleed to death on a deserted road in January, 2011. He has a non-parole period of 20 years. In the Darwin Supreme Court last Wednesday, May 9, Chief Justice Trevor Riley said

the victim was intoxicated, alone and defenseless. Justice Riley said she was attacked from behind and had no hope of escaping from the unprovoked and violent assault, and said there can be no doubt Roberts-Barlow intended to kill her rather than cause serious harm. He said the the prospects of rehabilitation are problematic in the absence of an explanation for the murder, even after a

physiological assessment. Crown prosecutor Jack Karczewski had told the court the motive for the attack remains unclear. Defense lawyer Rex Wild, QC, had asked that RobertsBarlow be given some credit for his compliance during the trial and remorse for the woman’s children and family. On January 6, the jury took four hours to find RobertsBarlow intended to kill her.

IF some of Nhulunbuy Christian College’s students seem even more helpful than usual it’s because they’re on a mission. Year 2, in particular, is working hard to raise funds for the Cancer Council and this year’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. Teacher Anne Fourie sees this as an opportunity to encourage her students to think beyond themselves and support others.

“It’s simple really, parents are encouraged to motivate the Year 2s to do chores around the house - from making their bed every day to washing the car and earn money to donate to Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. “In doing that, they’ll learn the importance of doing a job well and experience the pleasure of doing something good for someone else - a lesson for life

IT’S official - Gove has its own Living Legend. Linda Alexander has been named as the winner of the Living Legend category in the Northern Territory Government 2012 Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards. The award winners were announced on Friday night at Parliament House in Darwin, and Mrs Alexander and Gove District Hospital general manager Doug Gilchrist attended. Mrs Alexander said she was speechless when she was announced the winner. “There were four finalists from 15 nominees in my category, and I thought I didn’t have a hope against the other nominees. “It was a huge surprise and it is

nice to be recognised.” The nursing community in the Territory is very tight knit and Mrs Alexander said she knew many of the winners of the other categories. Arriving in Gove in 1987, Mrs Alexander has worked at the hospital, in area medicine and is now the Clinical Nurse Consultant and the Community Health Centre. She has a number of qualifications in nursing including palliative care, chemotherapy, breast care and community nursing. NT Minister for Health Kon Vatskalis hosted the 9th annual awards which recognise the outstanding contributions of Territory nurses and midwives. Clients, patients, family members and colleagues made 138 nominations for 87 nurses and midwives across 11 categories.

Linda’s triumph at N.T. Nursing, Midwifery Awards

Each category winner received $500 and a certificate from the NT Government. The overall 2012 Nurse or Midwife of the Year Award went to Cathy Chapple from Top End Mental Health Services. “The Territory has more doctors and nurses than ever before and the quality and number of entries this year is a true reflection of that,” Mr Vatskalis said. “The annual NT Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards give all Territorians the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the hard work of our talented Nurses and Midwives.” The awards night comes during a week marked by two major occasions, International Midwives Day - 5 May 5 and International Nurses Day May 12.

Bowel cancer screening extension welcomed CANCER Australia CEO Dr Helen Zorbas welcomed the Minister for Health’s announcement last week of a continued commitment to reducing the impact of bowel cancer in Australia through the extension of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program. Bowel cancer is the second

most-common cancer diagnosed in Australia in both men and women with an estimated 16,000 Australians to be diagnosed with bowel cancer this year. As the Australian population grows and ages the incidence of bowel cancer is projected to increase. In 2020 it is

estimated 20,000 Australians will be diagnosed with bowel cancer. “Bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in Australia with more than 4,000 Australians losing their lives to this disease each year,” Dr Zorbas said.

Yolngu Elder and International artist dies AN internationally acclaimed artist and Yolngu Elder passed away at her home in Gunyangara (Ski Beach) last week. Condolences are being paid in Gove to the family of Mrs Yunupingu who passed away last Wednesday night. Mrs Yunupingu was born in the 1940’s at Biranybirany, in north-east Arnhem Land. She is sister of Aboriginal leader Galarrwuy Yunupingu, former chair of the Northern Land Council, and Mandawuy Yunupingu, the singer from the music group Yothu Yindi and 1992 Australian of the year.

Mrs Yunupingu was an internationally respected artist and at home was a senior women’s leader for the Yolngu people. Her art has been widely exhibited all around the world, and was the opening exhibit in the newly-restored $370 million Quai Branly Museum in Paris. Her work is also exhibited in the National Gallery of Australia and she has won many awards for her work. In 2004 she won the 21st National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award for

a piece entitled Garak, The Universe, which consists of three memorial poles, decorated in her own style, which combines traditional Yolngu designs with her own, modern interpretation. In 2012, a painting on wood titled Garrurru (Sail), weighing a ton and measuring7m by 3m, was installed at the Australian National University. At home she was tireless in her efforts to help her extended family constantly teaching cultural knowledge to the young as well as helping the sick and needy.

She was an outstanding ambassador for her people teaching non-Yolngu people about her culture and world view and in doing so breaking down barriers and racism. Minister for Arts Gerry McCarty and Member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker paid their respects expressing their sincere condolences to the Yunupingu and extended Yothu Yindi families for their profound loss. Crocs on the prowl: Reminder to take care WITH A number of sightings of crocodiles (baru) at local beaches, residents are reminded to be wary of these predatory creatures. Crocodiles were spotted at Town Beach near the Lagoon outlet last week and also at Buffalo Creek - and the sightings have been reported to Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation. Residents are reminded not to become complacent and to be cautious every time you go near or in a waterway. There are no safe swimming areas in Nhulunbuy and Yirrkala as crocodiles can be found in the region all year. All fatal crocodile attacks in the NT in the past 20 years have occurred when people have entered the water outside of designated swimming areas. Always be aware of crocodiles in the Top End. Crocodiles are common in our waterways and are dangerous. Attacks can be fatal and they move around. For many years Dhimurru has worked together with NT Parks and Wildlife to manage crocodiles around the townships of Nhulunbuy and Yirrkala and within the Dhimurru Indigenous Protected Area (IPA). In recent years trapped crocodiles were taken to the Garrangali Crocodile farm at Ski Beach for release. Unfortunately due to a lack of funding the farm is no longer operating which, in turn, causes problems with continuing the trapping of crocodiles. This is a major issue for Dhimurru and Parks and Wildlife as there is now nowhere to put the crocodiles once they have been caught in the traps. It is NT Parks and Wildlife Policy that trapped crocodiles are either taken to a crocodile farm or euthanised. Relocating crocodiles back into the wild is not

an option as they generally return to the area where they were trapped. The animals often become trap shy and aggressive and, therefore, more likely to cause harm. After much consultation with the Traditional Owners of the Gumatj and Madarrpa clans, it was decided euthanising the animals was not an option as crocodiles are a significant totem and cultural symbol for yolngu people. Dhimurru has had no choice but to suspend the trapping regime and close the traps. Discussions between NT Parks and Wildlife, Garrangali Crocodile farm, Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation, Pacific Aluminium, East Arnhem Shire, Laynhapuy and the Traditional Owners have taken place and an agreement has been made to look at each crocodile sighting on a case-by-case basis. It is also important to note that whether

or not a trapping program is conducted Rno one can guarantee an area is safe from crocodiles. Dhimurru is requesting that everyone continues to take extreme care around the coastline, inland waterways and lagoons. Remain vigilant for crocodiles. Do not take risks near waterways and stay safe. Appropriate Crocwise behaviours are dependent on the level of risk and the risks in any area are dependent on natural factors such as crocodile populations and crocodile management activities in the area. That risk is increasing due to changes in both crocodile and human populations. Phone Dhimurru on 8939 2700 (AH 0408 512 589) or drop into their office in Arnhem Road to report any crocodile sightings or if you have any questions regarding Crocodile management in the IPA.

CROCODILE FACT FILE Some things to remember: If there is no safe swimming sign, do not swim. Always obey warning signs, they are there for your protection. Don’t feed, harass or encourage crocodiles. Avoid the waters edge wherever possible. Don’t paddle, clean fish, prepare food or wash at the waters edge. Stand at least five metres back from the waters edge when fishing. Don’t hang arms or legs out of a boat when on the water. Don’t dispose of food scraps and fish offal in the water, use bins or bury at least two metres from the waters edge. Stay away from crocodile slide marks and nest mounds. Be extra vigilant at night. Be aware and act with caution. Do not place yourself at risk of a crocodile attack. Know the risks and make informed, sensible choices.

Week of dog-related accidents TEN dogs have been involved in road accidents in the past week, said a spokesperson for the RSPCA Nhulunbuy. Sarah Howland, from the Nhulunbuy RSPCA, said seven of these beautiful animals have lost their lives. “We would like to express our heartfelt sympathies to the families who have recently lost their beloved pets in such tragic circumstances,” Ms Howland said. “We would like to take this opportunity to remind pet owners to please ensure that their animals are appropriately managed in accordance with Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited by-laws by ensuring their yards are securely fenced and that their dogs are

on a leash at all times, except in areas that are designated off-leash areas. “Dogs can be unpredictable so even in these off-leash areas we urge you to remain vigilant and always run your dogs with respect to other users of the area. “Another point to be made is that, if an animal’s owner is found negligent, that is, the animal was off the leash near, next to, or on the roadway and this then causes an accident, they can be held legally liable for their animal’s damage to someone’s property such as their vehicle.” If the RSPCA can be of any assistance regarding these matters please do not hesitate to contact them on 0437 526 502.

Milingimbi bombing remembered A LITTLE-known snippet of NT history - the bombing of Milingimbi was commemorated last week. The Japanese first attacked the RAAF aircraft re-fuelling base on the island 69 years ago and two people died in the first raid. Two Spitfire pilots were shot down and killed during the third attack. Last week the community said it also wanted to salute those who died at other times during the war.

week. Manager of Wildlife Use Keith Saalfeld said the surveys were in the western Top End from Monday to Friday. “The annual waterfowl hunting season is a huge part of the great Territory lifestyle for many Territorians and that’s why it’s important to keep a regular check on magpie geese numbers,” Mr Saalfeld said. “The survey was conducted with the use of a Cessna 206 aircraft flying

over the main flood-plains of the western Top End. “The survey results contribute to the monitoring requirement of the Management Program for the Magpie Goose in the Northern Territory, 2009-14 and form part of the advice to the Minister for Parks and Wildlife on the 2012 Waterfowl Hunting Season.” The annual waterfowl hunting season is likely to start in September with the exact timing yet to be determined.

Transit of Venus approaching NEXT month a rare astronomical event with huge scientific significance will occur and won’t be seen again for 120 years. On June 6 at about 8.16am, Venus will start its journey across the Sun. The Transit of Venus is not only scientifically important, but it also played a huge role in the history of Australia. The 1769 transit was the main reason for Captain Cook’s first voyage to the Pacific. After observing the transit from Tahiti, he opened sealed orders which instructed him to search for Terra Australis - and the rest, as they say, is history. The Transit of Venus is a shining example of collaboration on a global scale.

16 - 22 May 2012

Observations of transits of Venus helped scientists use parallax (the apparent position of something from different observation points) to calculate the distance between the sun and the earth. It also helped with calculating the size of our solar

system. So to use parallax, scientists had to spread across the globe, observe the transit of Venus and then get the data together and do the maths. For the 1769 transit not only was there Cook’s voyage, scientists travelled to Hudson Bay in Canada, Baja California, at the time under Spanish control, and Norway. The Czech astronomer Christian Mayer was invited by Catherine the Great to observe the transit in Saint Petersburg Members of Russian Academy of Sciences went to eight sites across the Russian Empire. The American Philosophical Society erected three temporary observatories in Philadelphia. ABOVE: Venus to journey in front of the sun on June 6.

Fraud Squad nets computer scammer MAJOR Fraud Squad Detectives have arrested a 19 year-old man in relation to obtaining money through deception.

On the beat with NT Police Police concerned at number of under-aged drinkers NHULUNBUY Police are concerned that there appears to be many young people gaining alcohol. Officer-in-Charge Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said this was reinforced on the weekend when a number of youths were stopped on Banyan Road and were forced to pour out the alcohol they were carrying. One 17-year-old male was charged with possessing and consuming alcohol in a restricted area. He was not the holder of a permit and allegedly told police his parents had given him the alcohol. “If that is the case, the parents are at risk of losing their permit,” Snr Sgt Muldoon said. “It is of great concern to police that there appear to be large numbers of youths obtaining alcohol and drinking it at the local skate park, parks and on the streets. “Hopefully parents are not encouraging them to drink by supplying them with alcohol,” he said

Police allege the man used computers and mobile phones to defraud an Australian corporation while he was living in the Northern Territory and continuing to do so while he traveled overseas. Detective Acting Superintendent Peter Schiller said the man had had set up sophisticated internet techniques in order to make the fraudulent on-line claims. “By setting up these accounts he was able to obtain up to $50,000 through phone systems and internet masking programs. “It is a shame that this young man has used his obvious talent for alleged criminal behaviour.” The man was arrested last week at the Darwin Airport with assistance from the Australian Federal Police. He has been charged with Criminal Deception and Attempt Criminal Deception and has been bailed to appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court at a later date.

Four teenagers were cautioned for trespassing when police found them drinking at a vacated home in Banyan Road. Two males, 19 and 15, and two females, 15 and 16, were found on the premises at 10.30pm on Saturday. The 19-year-old was taken into protective custody because of his level of intoxication. Nhulunbuy Police are asking parents to be aware of where their teenagers are at night.

Drink driver

A man will appear in Nhulunbuy Magistrate’s Court next month after he was charged with medium-range drink driving. The 35-year-old was stopped on Matthew Flinders Road on Sunday at 5pm and recorded a reading of 0.1 at a random breath test. He was also charged with driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.

Call for witnesses to accident

Major Crash Investigators are asking for witnesses to the fatal crash last Tuesday, May 8, at the intersection of Stuart Highway and Amy Johnson Avenue, Marrara, to come forward. Senior Sergeant John Worrall said Investigators would like to talk to anyone who was in the vicinity of where the crash occurred between the hours of 1.40pm to 2pm. “We would like to hear from anyone who may have noticed anything out of the ordinary, particularly if it involved the behaviour or manner of driving of other road users,” he said. “In the event they saw anything unusual we would encourage them to contact Police on 131 444 or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.” Snr Sgt Worrall said investigations into the crash are continuing and due to the nature of the incident the result will take time.

THE Darwin Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is tuning up for a visit to Gove in August. As part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of Gove, the DSO will present a concert at Nhulunbuy High School on August 11. The 60-strong orchestra will be performing, not only the traditional classical music, but also theme music for the movies and the popular musicals. Guest performer will be country singer James Blundell (pictured right) along with performers from within East Arnhem Land. Last week DSO general manager Guy Ross and the artistic director and chief conductor visited Gove to see what talent was available locally by visiting schools and other groups of musicians. They have asked them to send recordings of their works and will select five individuals or groups to perform as part of the concert adding to the local flavour. They are also working with the Arafura Dance Association who will also be part of the concert. Mr Ross, who grew up in Gove, said the DSO prides itself on performing in as many locations as possible and each year attempts to

visit two, major regional centres. “We have come out to see how the community can engage with us in putting on this concert,” Mr Ross said. “There are some very talented people out here and we want to tap into the wealth of creative talent. “Per capita the DSO gets to perform before more people than any other state,” he said. “We try to have a varied selection of pieces with something for everyone showing people the

Symphony Orchestra is not restricted to the classics.” This will not be the first time the volunteer orchestra has performed in Gove with the last concert in 2005. They have also performed at Groote Eylandt. The orchestra consists mainly of volunteers, ranging in ages from their 30s with the oldest member being over 80. Among their number are miners, doctors, pilots, teachers, engineers and an industrial abseiler. No matter what their given profession they all come together to perform as the DSO. The concert in August has been billed as a familyfriendly picnic and all children attending need to be under adult supervision. The day before the concert five musicians will be holding workshops with school children in a ‘meet the instruments kids concert’. This will be part of an East Arnhem tour and more details will be available at a later date. Airnorth will fly the members of the orchestra over for the day and other sponsors include Gove Operations Pacific Aluminium, Charles Darwin University and the NT and Federal Governments.

Groote Eylandt Rio reviewing Aust. facility upgrade coal expansion plans BROWN Consulting has designed a 35m x 36m x 21m high extension to its heavy mining equipment servicing facility on Groote Eylandt. The extension caters for increased plant servicing requirements for a planned mine expansion. Because of the region’s cyclonic wind conditions, and the span and spacings of the frames required to suit the operation of the building, the normal range of rolled steel sizes are not large enough to provide the necessary strength and stiffness. This, coupled with the tight deflection criteria required to suit the facility’s 30-tonne internal runway crane, led to the use of specially fabricated columns and beams for the main frames. Internal and external pavements were engineered to handle the weight of heavy specialist mine equipment. The upgrade also features a new oil farm and tyre bay/store facilities.

GLOBAL miner Rio Tinto is reviewing its coal expansion plans as soaring capital and investor pressure to return more cash force it to reassess spending plans, the Australian Financial Review reports. Rio’s proposed $2 billion, 10.5 million tonnes of thermal coal a year Mount Pleasant Coal project in New South Wales State looks likely to be shelved, the paper said without citing any sources.

Australian miners are re-looking at some planned investments in the wake of weaker outlook for commodities particularly from top consumer China, rising government taxes and investor worries on overspending on projects. Rio Chief Executive Tom Albanese has told investors that huge cost increases from labour, carbon tax and construction inputs is weighing on marginal developments, the paper said.

Initiatives to preserve Indigenous languages A NUMBER of initiatives are being floated as new measures to protect Aboriginal languages and promote them among younger generations. Indigenous Development Minister Malarndirri McCarthy appeared before the Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs (SCATSIA) Inquiry into language learning in Indigenous communities in Darwin on May 3. Language maintenance and language revitalisation programs as well as the Aboriginal Interpreting Service (AIS) are among the initiatives. Ms McCarthy said the NT Government supports Indigenous and English language learning in Indigenous communities. “The Government is clearly focused on language learning in Indigenous communities, particularly as 32 per cent of the Territory’s population is Indigenous, with more than 100 Aboriginal languages and dialects spoken and many Indigenous Territorians speak English as their third and fourth language,” she said. The Government’s submission to the Inquiry referred to a wealth of programs and initiatives that are promoting and

preserving Indigenous language. “The AIS language program aims to ensure that all Territorians receive equitable access to government programs, services and information to promote social inclusion, Ms McCarthy said. “Indigenous languages and culture curriculum is found in the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework (NTCF) including Language Maintenance and Language Revitalization programs. “The NT is the only Australian jurisdiction offering a comprehensive Indigenous language curricula of this type. “Under this policy each school can determine what the priority of language learning is for the school and in consultation with the community and the school this can be achieved.” Other initiatives include a number of programs aimed at language documentation and preservation at the The NT Library and local implementation plans agreed under Working Future. The Indigenous Affairs Advisory Council is working with Government in the development of an Indigenous Language Policy.

Wild About Gove

MY COLLEAGUE, the Hon Malanrdirri McCarthy and Member for Arnhem, who holds a number of ministerial portfolios, including Minister for Indigenous Policy, visited the region last week. As a Yanyuwa woman from Borroloola in the gulf Electoral News country and as a former by NT Member for Nhulunbuy LYNNE WALKER ABC journalist, she is well qualified to understand first hand the issues Aboriginal Territorians face. Our visit to Galiwin’ku at Elcho Island last Friday included meetings with Mala Leaders who represent the local reference group as well as board members of Marthakal Homelands. Our discussions, both robust and respectful, included matters raised by the Yolngu Makarr Dhuni (Yolngu Nations Assembly) about the Australian Government’s Stronger Futures Bill and the deeper philosophical issues around marrying our Westminster system of law and democracy with Yolngu ‘rom’ (law) and culture. The Australian and Territory Labor governments have always held a firm commitment for Yolngu and Ngapaki (non-indigenous) peoples to work and walk together to address Aboriginal disadvantage. That is why in 2013 all Australians will be asked to vote in a referndum to change the nation’s Constitution to formally recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It’s also why the Territory Government has vigorously pursued Statehood to address the constitutional disadvantage we have which allows the Australian Government to overturn our laws or intervene in our affairs - as was the case in 2007 when then Liberal Prime Minister John Howard launched the NT Emergency Response without consultation or warning. Sadly, the quest for Statehood was derailed by the Country Liberal Party late last year on the floor of parliament. Plans for elected candidates to participate in a constitutional convention in April, 2012, to draft a Northern Territory constitution have been deferred until after the August election. MY sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Yolngu elder, Mrs Yunupingu, with news of her passing last week. She was an incredible woman of great wisdom, knowledge and strength and her loss is profoundly felt. In coming weeks there are funerals planned in several Homelands including Gurrumuru, Birany Birany, Yilpara and Mata Mata.My condolences to those families who are preparing to farewell their loved ones.

AUGUST Fri 3. Open Mic night at GAT - Gove Peninsula Festival - showcasing local perfromance. Sat 4. Closing Concert -Gove Peninsula Festival - Hindle Oval. Sat 11. Nhulunbuy Motor Cycle Club - working bee set up for enduro/pont - 9am until set up. Sat 11. Nhulunbuy Motor Cycle Club - Junior coaching.

Independent sets sights on Nhulunbuy “There are many problems in the region that extend beyond the town boundaries and these issues need to be addressed.” WITH elections planned for the Northern Territory in August, a new Independent candidate is putting his hat in the ring. Kendall Trudgen, who is a 31-year-old and who has grown up in Arnhem Land, says there are many problems in the region that extend beyond the town boundaries and these issues need to be addressed. Mr Trudgen has been working in community development for about 10 years and feels he is well qualified to address the issues facing the Nhulunbuy electorate. “I will be supporting the Homelands and will be fight-

ing policies which take away self-management and selfdetermination for the Indigenous people of the region. “Too much policy making in the Territory is Darwin-centric . “The NT Government is taking away from the Traditional Owners rather than re-inforcing them. “We need local solutions for local issues and this includes looking at the policy of insisting the first four hours of school have to be in English,” he said. For more information about Mr Trudgen and his policies visit wwww.nhulunbuyindependent. com

SEAT OF NHULUNBIY PROFILE According to the NT Electoral division profile, there is one static polling station and 26 mobile stations. The seat is classified as rural, with the economic base of mining, tourism, business centre, urban residential.

SEAT OF NHULUNBUY FACT FILE FIRST created in 1974. and is named after the remote town of the same name. The only exception to the ALP’s dominance was Milton Ballantyne, who won the seat for the Country Liberal Party in 1974 when the ALP won no seats in the Assembly, and managed to hold on despite a strong swing to the ALP in 1977, before being easily beaten by the ALP’s Dan Leo in 1980. Nhulunbuy is currently held by Labor’s Lynne Walker. A NEW political party to reform Australian banks by introducing better regulation to protect all Australians is being established by the founders of Unhappybanking. The Bank Reform Party www.bankreformparty.com/ is in the process of being registered with the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) and will contest the next Federal election, due at the end of 2013, on a full senate ticket. Founded by former Bankwest customer Geoff Shannon and former Bankwest Head of Media Adrian Bradley, the party will be non-aligned and welcome Australians from across the broad political spectrum. “Surveys consistently show that most Australians favour stronger regulation of our banks to make them accountable and fairer to the Australian community,” Mr Bradley said.

A flexible approach will help you to get what you want. Don’t let other people’s standards prevent you from looking at a long-standing problem from a fresh angle. Romance. Your partner might appreciate a few more compliments. A powerful aspect to Venus later in the month will give you a chance to express your feelings more openly.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) Try to calm down a little! If you are not careful, you will waste a lot of energy just rushing around, without actually getting much done. A minor accident later in the week may slow you down. Romance. Your partner has much more insight into your needs than you probably realise. Trust them to make the right decision on your behalf.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) A seemingly intractable disagreement between family members will finally be resolved. Forgiveness will be needed on both sides. Romance. Your relationship will soon be in better shape than it has been for some time. A romantic trip sometime this week will go especially well.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) You may be a little less conscientious about your work than you are normally. This would be a good time to take a break. Romance. Your feelings for a new admirer may be much more romantic than you realise. Time spent alone together will help you to understand each other’s emotions a lot more clearly than before.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) A small concession will help you to get what you are after. Don’t be afraid to give up something of value. Romance. You will be seeing a lot more of a friend whom you were close to in the past. This person has changed in several ways since you last saw them, but still likes you as much as they did before.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) Chores will appear out of nowhere this week! Unfortunately there is a lot more to be done than meets the eye. Romance. A friend who wants to get to know your partner could stir up jealousies, possibly without realising it. There will be no need to worry.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) Your psychic abilities will be much more powerful than usual this week. You will be able to see events in a very different way. Romance. A surprise comment from a long-standing admirer will cheer you up. A phone call from this person later in the week will help to cement your relationship.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) A close friend may have some useful ideas about what you should do next. Listen to what they have to say, but make up your own mind. Romance. You may be feeling quite frisky this week. Don’t be surprised if your partner is rather slow to respond. A romantic get-away later in the week will put you both in the right mood.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) You are being bossed around too much at the moment. Try to find a way of making yourself a little more independent. Romance. This should be a very good week for romantic adventures. You will regret it if you do anything sneaky, however.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

A favourable aspect to Jupiter will help to bring a little more luck into your life over the next few days. Don’t miss an opportunity just because a friend tries to put you off. Romance. Your self-confidence will be especially high at the moment. You may need to be the one who takes the initiative in a new relationship.

You will be held accountable for your actions and must make sure that the decisions which you make are the best ones for everyone concerned. Don’t allow a friend to knock you off course with bad advice. Romance. Things will go much more smoothly if you calm down a bit. You may also have to be quite patient. A meeting which doesn’t work out may disappoint you.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th)

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th)

A favourable aspect to Jupiter will give you the confidence you need to sort out a long-standing problem. You need to deal head-on with an issue which you have been trying to avoid. Romance. Your partner will appreciate a few words of encouragement. You might not realise how much they value your support.

A favourable aspect to Mercury later in the week will help you to communicate your feelings clearly to the people around you. Don’t take “no” for an answer: you have some good ideas and must push through until your colleagues accept them. Romance. Your partner will have a pleasant surprise in store for you! A recent misunderstanding should soon be behind you, but you will have to uncover the reasons why it happened in the first place.

Gove Girls touch triumph OVER the May long weekend, Gove Touch Association was represented by an Open Women’s Team in Darwin for the NT Touch titles. The ladies trained extremely hard on their fitness and ball skills in the lead-up to the titles, and this showed through their competitiveness playing against Darwin and regional teams from Alice Springs and Ramingining. Lead by their team captain Rachel Blundell and vice-captain Hailey Williams the team played two games on the Friday, with both matches being against two highly rated Darwin sides. The first game was closely fought and only in the second half were the girls beaten 5-3 and, in the second match, the girls were defeated 8-2. However the score didn’t reflect the closeness of the game. On Saturday the girls had a challenging line up of four games within six hours. The first game in the heat of the afternoon was against the overall competition winner but the girls gave their all. The matches throughout the day were closely followed by leg ice baths (much to the girls’ horror and the coaches’ enjoyment) and minor injuries being assessed and treated. The final game of the night was played at 9.50pm, against a talented and fast paced Ramingining side. This was hard fought with a pleasing outcome of a tie - 4-all and a ticket into the Regional Finals the following day. Based on overall competition points scored, it was a rematch from the previous

night of Gove versus Ramingining. For the final time, coach Scott Morris and manager Stacy Griffiths gave words of encouragement and pride and the ladies took to the field. The ‘Gove Girls’ showed their skill and commitment along with awesome team work and triumphed with a 9-2 victory. Their win was celebrated with the attempted traditional water cooler over the coach (ice bath revenge); the team song sang proudly, photos, presentation function and a few bevvies. Thank you to the Darwin Touch Association for putting on another great competition - the best yet. Our appreciation to Jan O’Shea and Les Worger for their fantastic efforts as our two volunteer referees for the competition. To the Gove Touch Association committee and manager Stacy, the number of hours that were required to guarantee a stress-free trip beforehand and during so the ladies could focus only on their training and games - your efforts are deeply appreciated. To coach Scotty - your patience, persistence and guidance no doubt helped us secure the Regional Trophy. A huge shout-out to the Gove community for their support with our fundraising efforts as well. Finally to the ladies - they should be so proud of the way they conducted themselves on and off field and we look forward to them continuing to fine-tune their touch skills and fitness ready for 2013 Titles.

Ms Forrest said she snapped a few of Dale while she was doing some maintenance on her boat.

“I have a couple of photos taken of him just after he had fallen off and very quickly jumped back aboard, and

then skimmed past us where I snapped my favourite shot of him with the sun glistening on the water,” she said.

Bull riding to land in Darwin

THE Professional Bull Riders (PBR) was founded in 1992 by 20 accomplished bull riders who decided to develop bull riding - the most-popular event in traditional rodeo - into a stand-alone sport. Today more than 1200 bull riders hold PBR memberships and compete in more than 300 PBR sanctioned competitions around the globe for a total prize pool exceeding US$13 million. In November 2005, PBR announced their plans for worldwide expansion. Since then, PBR has opened offices in Canada, Mexico, Australia and Brazil and is rolling out major live events in key cities in each of these countries. PBR president and former world champion Troy Dunn said: “Darwin has always been on our radar and we are keen to establish this as one of our top 10 Touring Pro Series events for years to come. “We already have established events in other major capital cities and it just made sense to include Darwin as part of our international pathway to the multi-million dollar PBR world finals in Las Vegas in late October. “Our organisation is the only one of its kind in this country that allows riders to compete on our tour with all points and money they win counting towards a legitimate international pathway that includes the USA, Canada, Brazil and Mexico. “The stand-alone sport of professional bull riding is still relatively young in Australia but we are experiencing a huge growth in attendances and media interest like all the other countries. “PBR events are not like your traditional rodeo, each PBR event features the top 40 bull riders in the country who are then matched against the toughest pen of bulls from a number of different bull breeders. “The show itself features many great match Phone: (08) 8987 3191 • Email: manager@gcgc.com.au ups, choreographed music, PO Box 370, Nhulunbuy, NT 0881 • Fax: (08) 8987 1707 pyrotechnics, instant replays and educational Please take note of our new fee structure video clips that gives the and pass onto anyone interested: audience a unique bull

riding experience as well as spectacular high point rides and as equally spectacular buck offs as these guys give it their all as they strive to climb the PBR rankings ladder,” Dunn said. With over $15,000 up for grabs in Darwin, this particular event is the second last qualifying event for riders to earn one of the 14 Australian spots available for the International Cup Series events taking place in July. The 2012 Australian Champion will also go onto receive an automatic wild card entry into the October World Finals in Las Vegas where they will join the best bull riders from around the globe and do battle against the world’s rankest bulls on the biggest bull riding stage and compete for the biggest pay day of their career. Come Friday May 25 and Saturday May 26, 40 of Australia’s best will converge on Darwin for what is shaping up to be one of the most grueling and anticipated events of the year. Both nights are going to be spectacular, with a special Friday night PBR discount ticket offer available to celebrate the inaugural Darwin event. Tickets will be offered for pre-sale via www. ticketmaster.com.au or by calling 136 100.

Billets wanted for N.T. Soccer titles THE School Sport Arnhem Cluster is seeking the support of families in Nhulunbuy who would be able and generous enough to host students as family members during the School Sport NT Football U12 championships. The championships are being held in Gove from Wednesday, June 13, to Friday, June 15. Some students will be arriving on Tuesday, June 12, and leaving on Saturday. Host families will be expected to provide suitable sleeping arrangements, a nutritious breakfast and the evening meal. Lunches will be provided at the games each day, but you may need to assist with snacks. Ian Darlington, from School Sport NT Arnhem Cluster, says it is hoped that families who have had students involved in the School Sport NT program, either locally or interstate, and other families involved in football will be able to assist with the provision of accommodation for these travelling students. “This is generally a most-rewarding experience and leads to lasting friendships,” he said. “If you are able to assist please contact Nicole at School Sport Arnhem Cluster, Nhulunbuy Primary School, or ring the office for more information.” Alternatively email arnhem.ssnt@ntschools. net

Future of Lifesaving Club ‘in safe hands’ 18 graduate from three-week course GOVE Peninsula Surf Lifesaving Club is in safe hands after the completion of a three-week course. A record 18 participants took part in the course and graduated with either a Surf Rescue certificate (SRC) level or a Bronze Medallion. Club President Greg Whelan said: “This is the biggest group to have ever gone through at the surf club. “Our future is in safe hands,” he said. Each of the courses completed required a complex set of studies and physical capabilities. There were pre-set swimming requirements as well as run/swim/run components with time restrictions on each as well as surf awareness and skills. Basic first aid included, but was not limited to, stinger management. Participants had to show they were competent at unconscious and conscious tube rescues and board rescues. They also had to learn various signals and radio operation and management. Resuscitation and live-person assessment, including the use (and safety precautions) of oxygen and the semi-automatic defibrillator was another aspect of the training. They also had to learn how to carry victims including wet and dry spinal retrievals and carries. Patrol work included working in a team, stinger sweeps, surveillance techniques, communication skills, OH&S, safety and well-being. The SRC’s do all the above except the radios, carries, oxygen and defibrillator. The six students to receive their Bronze Medallion/ Certificate II in Public Safety were: Jack Tracy, Alex Parfitt, Jesse Chamberlain, Sam Smith, Jeremy Kee and Pia Lynch. The 10 to be awarded their Surf Rescue Certificate were: Connor Tracy, Savanna Canobie, Holly O’Neal, Grace Chamberlain, Molly Osborne, Jade Kelly, Holly Marrable, Gabbi McGrath, Sarah Pickett and Tracy Kelly. Benn Prowse and John O’Neal have achieved their Certificate II in Public Safety, to add to their pre-existing Bronze Medallions. Denise Marrable and Bernie Whelan were the trainers for the three weeks and the assessors were Emma Putland (chief assessor), Deanne Castelli, Sally Putland, Denise Marrable, Alan Cross and Bernie Whelan and the patrol captain is Steve Castelli. Netball juniors kick off

JUNIORS finally kicked off with a great crowd gathering at the Netball courts to try out their skills. The weather held out and everyone was keen to get onto the courts. The girls warm up at 4.30pm and the coaches run them through an hour of skills, drills and games. Energy was high and all who took part enjoyed the chance to get back onto the court and participate. Any girls interested in taking part in Junior netball are encouraged to come down to the netball courts (behind the tennis courts) on Wednesday afternoon starting at 4.30pm. The juniors are also always looking for assistance with coaching, so if you have an interest in netball and can spare an hour to help out, please come forward and either talk to Donna-Marie on Wednesday afternoon or email: gove.netball@hotmail.com.
