Yamba and Gove compete for the Ashes THE battle for the ashes took an interesting twist in Gove on Sunday. Not contested between the English and Australian cricket teams but between the Yamba and Gove Peninsula Surf Club Lifesaving Clubs - the competition took place on Town Beach. Both clubs had suffered significant losses through fire - Gove in

February this year when their main building, housing the caretaker’s residence, equipment storage area and kitchen, and Yamba in February, 2011, when they lost their boat and storage area. Both fires were started from electrical faults. Yamba members heard of the fire in Gove and were one of the first to make a sizeable donation to the tune of $1000.

That donation, and the link through the fires, also created a bond between the clubs and they decided to get together and hold a competition for the nippers. That is how the ashes came about and it was great for the Gove nippers, who live 1000km from their nearest competitors. The Yamba nippers have more opportunities to compete, including competitions for the North Coast

Area, Country areas at South-West Rocks and a State competition which they will contest in Umina. There are no national titles at the junior level but even within the club they can compete with fellow team members as they boast more than 200 nippers. Andrew Morris, the Yamba Deputy Chairman, said it was a great opportunity to come up and see how the Gove club was progressing and

Patrol members are then tested in scenarios and are certified ‘ready’ for operations by a senior officer from outside the Squadron. Lisa Oosen was the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year; Helen Clark was runner-up in VET Teacher/Trainer of the Year; and Gabrielle Birch was runner-up in VET in Schools Student of the Year. Lisa Oosen, who completed a Certificate II in Business Administration, won her category which was sponsored by East Arnhem Shire and Banambi Wunungmurra presented the Award. Employed by Pacific Aluminium - Gove Operations, her Registered Training Organisation is Nhulunbuy High School. By her own admission, Lisa was a naïve, young kid fresh out of school with no confidence and no idea of her potential or the opportunities available to her beyond school life. After joining the Pacific Aluminium Arnhem Learning Education Regional Training (ALERT) program in 2010, the 19-year-old now says she is a determined, focused, skilled and confident young woman who knows exactly what she wants out of life. So far Lisa has completed a

Certificate I in Resources and Infrastructure, a Certificate II in Business Administration and has now started a Certificate III in Transport and Logistics (warehouse and storage) so that she can reach her goal to be a qualified warehouse operator at Gove Operations. A self-confessed ‘people person’, Lisa loves to swim, fish and go camping with family and friends. She is also aware that her young Indigenous nieces, nephews and cousins need positive role models so she spends time reading to them and encouraging them to attend school and continue with their own educations. Helen Clark is from the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education and has been a teacher for 33 years. Primarily focused on education in Indigenous communities she has, for the last 17 years,been devoted to vocational education and training (VET) teaching and training. Helen’s qualifications include a Diploma of Teaching, a Bachelor of Education, a Graduate Certificate of Teaching English as a Second language, a Master of Arts (Aboriginal Studies) and her recent Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

Helen’s passion for Indigenous education stems from her father’s involvement in training Indigenous trade apprentices many years ago. As she began her own teaching career, Helen felt that literacy skills would provide a just society and strong economy for remote communities to build on. She devoted herself to providing two-way communication by learning four Indigenous languages - Tiwi, Maung, Pintubi Luritj and Yolngu Matha - and living for long periods among her students and their families in remote communities. Helen has spent the last 13 years delivering VET training to the communities and Homelands of North East Arnhem Land. Limited resources and the tyranny of distance has made this a challenging role at times, often travelling for up to three hours to get to a student and then finding the place without power or supplies for teaching. However, Helen says any inconvenience is far outweighed by the satisfaction of helping a student learn and seeing their own sense of pride and confidence in their progress. Helen has used her skills to integrate English language literacy and numeracy into a wide range of

GABRIELLE BIRCH topics such as business administration, primary health care, housing and construction, environmental health, first aid and visual and contemporary craft. Gabrielle Birch has a Certificate I in Business, and Certificate I in Information Technology. A student at Nhulunbuy High School, Gabrielle is currently working on her Certificate II in Information Technology and in Business. The 16-year-old chose these particular courses because she really wants to work with technology in an office environment when she leaves school. Gabrielle finished first in the Information Technology category of the NT WorldSkills Competition and will now represent the Territory at the National WorldSkills Competition in September this year.

Following her NT WorldSkills win, Gabrielle was offered a schoolbased traineeship with CSG - a business specialising in the management and maintenance of government computers where her natural abilities and enthusiasm has been encouraged and nurtured. Gabrielle’s busy life also includes working every Saturday at her local newsagency, assisting with fundraising at her BMX Club and studying tap, ballet, jazz and contemporary dance. Her dancing has seen her perform on stage at the Darwin Eisteddfod and alongside Jessica Mauboy and Icehouse at the Arafura Games Opening ceremony last year. Fellow Nhulunbuy High student Auston Boyd studying Certificate I in Engineering was also a finalist in this category.

Mr Patterson said he had his head under the dash of his car when he heard a noise in his office. “I went in to see what it was and there was Pal the Pelican sitting under my desk. I’m sure it was him because he was very friendly. “I had some pilchards in the freezer so got them out for him.

“He wanted them straight away but I had to defrost them in the microwave. “He was very funny as he just sat there watching the turntable go around and around and around as though he knew what was happening. “He looked funny as though standing on tip toes.” Mr Patterson said Pal left but he saw him on Sunday outside the bank in Endeavour Square. Viking boat just off course SEEING a Viking ship had residents on Elcho wondering if they were seeing things. The ship sailed past the remote Elcho Island last Monday, September 17, and caused a stir among the locals. Unlike the Macassans who were regular visitors to Arnhem Land, the

Vikings were considered being a little off course. Police said they received a report of residents seeing the unusual boat off the coast of Elcho. Officers said the boat was a replica Viking vessel on its way to Sydney with six Russians on board. The 15-metre vessel

is believed to have been the one which sailed into Darwin in September last year. The crew said at the time, according to the NT News, that they were looking to place the boat in dry dock for several months untl the currents and the winds were right to proceed again.

Scouts help clean up the Top End

Kids ready to get out there and fill their bags. NHULUNBUY Scouts and Cubs took part in the Northern Clean Up on Saturday, September 15. Joeys and cub leader Faye Brooks-Jones (aka Willow) said: “It wasn’t a great turn up but considering it was the school fete too; we had 11 which was OK. “We had two joeys, two scouts, one sibling and the rest were cubs. We just went on Town Beach as far as the creek so a few metres then walked down towards Buffalo Creek on the road and along the beach to the point. “In total we got 22 big bags full of mainly cans with the odd bit of rubbish thrown in - we also got two shopping carts, a bit of a car and a few unidentifables. “They did a great job and even got the guys camping on the beach to throw their rubbish in the trailer too,” she said. More than 1000 volunteers pitched in to clean up across the NT as part of the Great Northern Clean Up. Ian Kiernan AO, founder and Chairman of Clean Up Australia, said: “Volunteers at 24 sites across the NT demonstrated their commitment to the local environment by cleaning up ahead of the wet season. “In doing so they removed an estimated 52.8 tonnes of rubbish from the environment which would otherwise have been washed into our rivers, creeks and oceans, where it’s potentially lethal to marine life.”

Kids in Ramingining model the new shoes. SOME kids in Ramingining now have their first pair of shoes, due to the Robert deCastella Indigenous Marathon Project. Earlier this month, the Project launched a shoe drive at the Sydney Running Festival registration expo calling on participants and spectators to bring along their unwanted running shoes. The kids in Ramingining saw just how successful the drive was as 100 pairs have arrived in their town. Andrew Bagnall from the community said they are holding a series of fun runs with the local children, and using the shoes as prizes and incentives to get the kids participating. “These shoes will mean a great deal to the children in the school, and the families who will benefit from them, as I am sure they will be worn by all family members,” he said. “I have been at the school for nine months now and today (the day the shoes arrived) was my favourite moment - seeing the kids come into the classroom, try on a pair of shoes, test them out, see if they skid on concrete and grass and make noises on the loose boards outside. “None of the kids wear or own a pair of shoes up here, so they were greatly appreciated.”

 letters to the editor The NCL needs to be held accountable THE recent article in the Arafura Times (September 1218, 2012 The Party’s Over: NCL intimidation blamed) raises more questions about the current administration of the NCL(Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited). The NCL is a private not-forprofit company established to undertake certain municipal type services on behalf of its owners PacAl (Pacific Aluminium). I am also advised that the NCL is self-funded, in that its funds essentially come from rates, fees and charges. PacAl obviously needs to protect its interests in the town, but the town is the home of 4500 residents and about half of the properties in the town are privately owned (on sub-leases).

This means that most of the NCL’s income must come from non-PacAl sources. Why then does the community have so little say in the activities of the NCL, its decision making and its performance and particularly that of the Town Administrator? What input do we have into the operation of the town? Not much! It has a pretend ‘Council’ which cannot make any decisions and the normal reports and other documents that would be public and available for public scrutiny are not. Agendas and minutes of meetings are not available to the public to read and the public is excluded from meetings. There is no public questioning or question

First language is a basis for early years IT WAS great to see the recent release of the report, Our Land Our Languages, from the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs. The committee found that “the key to developing competency in Standard Australian English was for the child to be taught bilingually, with the first language used as the basis for learning in the earliest years.” After four years of the ‘English Only’ policy from the former NT Labor Government, this one statement is a welcome return to common sense. It also means that the last surviving bilingual schools in the NT, Galiwinku, Yirrkala and Areyonga, might have some relief coming provided the new NT Government listens. The committee also makes the recommendations that government: “Resource bilingual school education programs for Indigenous communities”, Use “alternative NAPLAN methods and reporting for students whose first language is not English”, “Develop a national framework of flexible and accessible training for indigenous people to gain limited authority qualifications”, and Make “compulsory EAL/D (English as an Alternative Language/ Dialect) training for all teaching degrees and mandatory EAL/D and cultural awareness training for teachers working in Indigenous communities.” This report has even linked the positive “contributions of Indigenous languages to Closing the Gap”, a no brainer, but something ‘Interventionist’ ideology has missed for many years. Groups from Galiwinku, Yirrkala and Nhulunbuy all gave evidence to the committee and I believe they would all be happy with this outcome. Congratulations, Kendall Trudgen.

Can it charge fees at all? How can the NCL adopt policies without consulting the community that lives here and how can it implement a policy

Public servants should be worried TERRITORY public servants continue to have good cause to be worried about their jobs which is why Leader of the Opposition Delia Lawrie has launched the Job Watch website which invites public servants to lodge information confidentially. A freeze on recruitment is one thing, but a freeze on renewal of temporary contracts is the source of a good deal of anxiety for many public servants who are uncertain as to whether their job is regarded as ‘frontline’ or ‘essential’ and are waiting to see if they have a job by the end of the year. TEACHERS with the Department of Education should greet with caution the announcement last week from the new CLP Education Minister that, from 2013, those on temporary contracts longer than six months will be offered permanent contracts. The glitch comes with the fact that permanent contracts are not attached to a school meaning in accepting permanency, a teacher could be sent anywhere in the Territory - that’s hardly providing people with confidence about their future and job security.

Shepherdson College, Baniyala, Gapuwiyak and Nhulunbuy Primary are among them and that’s fantastic to see. I’LL be away for part of the upcoming school holiday week taking a break with my family and advise that my office will be closed October 1-3 to enable maintenance works to be done. Birthday celebrations at 3C’s Cafe

OWNERS of the 3C’s cafe think the time they have been the proprietors of the cafe has just flown by. Trish and Paul King, who are always keen to support local groups and sporting bodies, took on the lease as independent operators two years ago and, on October 3, will be celebrating that birthday by offering customers free coffees for two hours from 9am. “It is just a way of saying thank you to our many good customers,” Trish said. “We came across the cafe quite by chance. Paul and I were travelling around Australia and I was working in Katherine cutting someone’s hair and she told me there was a business for sale here.

“Paul is a qualified chef so we came over to Gove to have a look for ourselves. He had worked here as a FIFO years ago and was working as a chef at G3. “Paul said they had lived in Alice for three years and came to realise smaller towns were the place to be. “We offer an extensive menus and have introduced evening take-aways on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. “We also offer gluten-free alternatives and target vegetarians as well. Catering is also something we provide. “We provide employment for full time, permanent part-time and casual staff and always encourage local teenagers to apply for positions.”

He said they see the Three C’s as a meeting place and knows his regular customers on a first name basis. “We always like to see a smile on someone’s face and that is what we encourage with our staff as well. “We have a great team and invite people to come along and help us celebrate our birthday.” An added bonus to being in Gove is that the couple has now started a family. “We had been trying for a number of years and now we are here it happened and we have a beautiful nine-month-old daughter - Shavaun. “I hope it won’t be too long before we have another - let’s hope it’s in the water,” Trish joked.

No shooting around Nhulunbuy as hunting season opens NHULUNBUY residents are reminded that, although the waterfowl hunting season officially opened last week, there is no shooting allowed in town. This included the area of the Town Lagoon, which is home to many Magpie geese, as it is part of the town lease and as such no shooting is permitted The Dhimurru Abooriginal Corporation Board do not allow hunting within the Dhimurru IPA. Batchelor father-of-one Gary Battaglene is this year’s Number One permit holder ahead of the 2012 Northern Territory waterfowl hunting season, which started last Wednesday. Mr Battaglene, 57, won the Number One permit through a raffle at last week’s Goose Fever Expo held at the Darwin Clay Target Club. “I probably won’t be able to go out hunting for a while, being flat out with work, but once I find the time I’ll be getting out to wherever I can get to,” Mr Battaglene said. Almost 900 people have been issued with waterfowl hunting permits in preparation for the 2012 season and the Parks and Wildlife Commission of the NT is once again urging hunters to return permits so that decisions about future hunting seasons are further supported by wider evidence. Keith Saalfeld, manager of wildlife use, said: “We encourage

permit holders to submit a return at the end of the season, as it provides key information for declaring the season and ensuring the sustainability of the magpie goose hunting season for the future. “Daily bag limits this year will again be the same as last year, which is 10 magpie geese and 10 ducks per hunter per day. “The Parks and Wildlife Commission of the NT will be doing random checks of hunting reserves to ensure hunters have permits and are doing the right thing by others and the environment.” Hunters are reminded of a number of conditions related to waterfowl hunting in the NT: The use of lead shot is prohibited on all Northern Territory land including Parks and Wildlife Commission hunting reserves. The ban on lead shot has resulted from lead shot poisoning waterfowl that exist at many wetlands being identified as a serious problem and is a part of an overall national strategy to combat the problem. Waterfowl hunting permits are available prior to the opening of and for the duration of the season - all hunters are required to obtain a permit whether hunting on the Hunting Reserves, Crown Land or private property. Lodgement of a permit return at the end of the hunting season is not mandatory.

THE Nhulunbuy High School annual surf carnival was held at Town Beach on Wednesday, September 12. Students experienced a range of surf rescue techniques through the guidance and coaching of our own students who are qualified surf lifesavers. These students hold either a Surf Rescue Certificate or a Surf Bronze Medallion.

These students were: Pia Lynch, Gabby McGrath, Grace Chamberlain, Meagan Morris, Sarah Pickett, Bella Marrable, Sam Smith, Maddeline Barnett, Sally Naughton, Molly Osborne, Tom McGrath, Jesse Chamberlain, Savanne Canobie, Alex Parfitt and Jack Pitkin. A huge thanks to these students who did themselves proud by showing

excellent leadership and surf skills. Students had a fantastic day on the beach and were kept safe by a group of volunteer surf lifesavers who either gave up their day off or were allowed by their employers to take the day to enable the carnival to go ahead. NT Junior 8-ball titles for Gove THE Junior 8-ball NT championships are being held in Nhulunbuy in October. The titles will be held at the Arnhem Club from October 3-5 and, although there are now only two Junior players, the club is sure to put on an excellent competition. There will be between 20-25 players from Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Litchfield and Darwin playing against the local players for the chance to represent the NT in the Australian titles in South Australia early next year. The Territory competition rotates between clubs annually and it is the turn of Gove to play host this year. There are categories for the Under 12s, U15s and U18s as well as a single competition. This will be for the best player from each team and is not depend-

ant on age. The competition will start at 9am on Wednesday and go all day with the presentation on Friday night. The competition is on during the school holidays and anyone interested is welcome to come along and offer support to the players. As part of their fundraising effort for the Junior 8-ball club to put on the event they were at the Nhulunbuy Rotaryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Beach Volleyball helping out. The Junior 8-ball club has been in Gove for over 20 years and participant numbers have varied during that time. Jack Richter has been playing for a number of years and has played in the Australian titles five times. He will again be playing for the chance to do so again at the titles.

Volleyball results ROUND six of the Gove Volleyball competition was played on September 18. Results were: Energizers defeated Mad Hatters 3 set to 1 -best players were Tash, Chavon, Paul and Brett. Congo defeated Some Spike it Hot 2-1- bext players Cherie, Abbie, Jamie and Jason. Techo Tigers defeated Raggae Rockets 4-0 - best players Tara, Marilla, Justin

Student participation was very high with eight different activities ranging from rescue boards, flag relays, tennis ball retrieval to beach volleyball. Staff supervisors joined in and had a great day too. Thanks to Denise Marrable for overall organization. In the afternoon, house competition was fierce. The winning team was Roper.

Billfish event to launch season

THE Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club 2012 Walkabout Lodge John Jones Memorial Billfish Challenge will be contested on October 13 and 14. This year will see teams competing for the coveted title of Champion Team along with the major prize of a Shimano Tiagra 30W game fishing reel awarded to each angler of the winning team. Teams consisting of two, three or four anglers will fish the waters around Gove for two great competitive days and this Billfish Challenge will showcase the regions highly regarded billfish fishery challenging both angler and teams. Entry fee for competing anglers is adult $60 and juniors $30 and includes tournament entry, the 2012 John Jones Memorial Billfish Challenge presentation dinner and tickets for the lucky door prizes and giveaways at the Walkabout Lodge.

This event is a sanctioned tag and release billfish competition and all entrants are required to be members of the Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club or affiliated game fishing club and the Northern Territory Game Fishing Association. The purpose of this tournament organised by the Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club is to encourage responsible game fishing. This event will be conducted in accordance with the NRSFC constitution and NRSFC tournament guidelines. Report – Meeting 18 September, 2012 The Town Board met on Tuesday, 18 September 2012. Topics discussed at the meeting were – • Digital TV: The Board was informed that the installation of the digital TV rebroadcasting equipment was planned for the last week of September / first week of October 2012. This was dependent on delivery of the equipment via the barge. This will mean that the commercial channels would be digital. SBS and ABC would still be available on analogue. Generally, if residents were able to view these channels now, they should be able to receive them digitally, as long as their TV set had a

digital tuner. Residents should ensure they were prepared for the switchover as the end of September was football finals weekend. • Road Issues: The Corporation will programme the recommended changes around roads / traffic in town around the operational work of the Corporation. Dr Ross Theedom explained to the Board that the proposed reseal of the airport runway has been postponed as the runway was deemed to be in good order. This affected the roadworks that were scheduled for the town roads as these works were dependent on the equipment and material being available

in town for the airport reseal. • Election for Town Board: The dates for the election to fill the current vacancy on the Town Board were tabled. The closure date for enrolment to vote: Thursday, 27 September 2012; closure date for nominations: Friday, 26 October 2012; election day: Saturday, 10 November 2012. • Chlorine / Fluoride Systems: The Board was told that the chlorine and fluoride systems are not working at the moment, but was reassured that the town water was still within safe parameters. By HAMISH SIMPSON The GAFL grand final between Gopu and Nguykal attracted a large boisterous crowd who witnesses Gopu run out comfortable 55-point winners against Nguykul. It was great to see the amount of work that had gone into the supporters’ outfits, and likewise good to see so many friends from the outstations and surrounding communities were able to make it in to watch what turned out to be a good clean and skilful game of Yolngu football. Nguykal had had a week’s rest after beating Gopu two weeks earlier and this showed early in the match as they jumped out of the blocks to eventually kick the first two goals of the match into the wind. Nguykal’s ruckman Bilo Bourne was the catalyst for Nguykal’s start; his centre tap

clearances were accurate and subtle whilst his vigour in open play kept the ball in Nguykal’s attacking half for the majority of the opening term. Gopu scrapped a couple of late goals to make it a one-point game at the first break. Gapan Yunupungu, Gopu’s full-forward, came into the match at the beginning of the second quarter, kicking the first two gaols in quick succession and putting a real spring in the step of the Gopu boys. ‘ Quentin Gurruwiw and Danny Bromot, Gopu’s engine room, compliment each other very well. Bromo does the grunt work in close and Quentin uses his agility and starting speed to conjour some midfield magic. The second quarter was where the game was opened up, Gopu’s kicked five goals to Nguykals single major. The second half was a tough tussle in which Gopu always

seemed to have the answers to Nguykal’s repeated questioning. Marradakthun Marika, Darryl Lacey and Robbie Clements battled valiantly all day for the Yirrkala team and were easily the pick of the Yirrkala boys. Gapan Yunupingu kicked gloriously to finish with seven goals from all angles. But Dongga Maymuru, Gopu’s 19-year-old full back, was voted as the best player on the day. He repelled many an attacking thrust and countered with classy switches of play and long open runs done the Gopu wing. After quarter time, Gopu kicked 14 goals to Nguykal’s five to run out convincing winners:L Gopu 16.9.105 to Nguykal’s 7.8.50. Well done to the Ski Beach boys and administrators, Lisa Yunupingu must be singled out for her tireless devotion to the Gopu team.

Eagles win women’s final

THE women’s football grand final started at midday under a blazing sun. The girls have likewise had a successful season. Comparing their first game of the year to the proficiency, fitness and agility of the grand final is like comparing apples with orange helicopters. Again Biyamarr Mununggurr was a standout. She dominated the NT athletics titles for her age and was impossible to catch and is also beautifully skilled and balanced at top speed. Lara Poupard battled well across half forward for the Lions and dished out a

few big hits (and some friendly fire) to have the other women looking sideways at the contest. Emma Kennedy and Phillipa were an excellent ruck and rover combination and lots of the Eagles’ forward movements were a result of their great clearance work in the middle of the ground. Well done to all involved with the successful inaugural season of women’s football here in Nhulunbuy. The Eagles ran out winners on a sweltering day 3.4.22 to the Lions 1.2.8, but, as evidenced by the dancing at the Arno that night, there was obviously plenty of gas left in the tank!

A massive congratulations must be extended to all players and officials who played the match in excellent spirits. It was nice to see the excellent sportsmanship post match where Nguykal’s players and supporters graciously joining the presentations. Des O’Sullivan and Damien Djerrkura must be congratulated for developing a bunch of raw but talented footballers into a fit and disciplined outfit. Things are certainly moving in the right direction for Nguykal as Nathan Djerrkura makes his way back from carving them up at the Western Bulldogs to Yirrkala. \They will be a formidable force in 2013. Thanks you to the GAFL sponsors Miwatj and Lynne Walker for helping to make the 2012 season a great success. Have a great summer everyone, see you next year.

Juniors kick off GF day YIRRKALA Oval saw the culmination of all things AFL on Saturday. The juniors kicked things off with their first full-ground match for the year. The four teams that have made up the 10-a-side competition all year were combined to chase the sherrin on the wide expanses of Yirrkala oval. They acquitted themselves manfully with some awesome teamwork and skill. These boys have been training all year as a group and their skill development has been noteworthy. At the start of the year there was much to learn, but these youngsters were eager to learn and by years-end their movements were instinctive and crisp. The friendships that started this year will hopefully develop as will their football.
