Candles possible cause of house fire INVESTIGATIONS are continuing into a fire which caused serious damage to a house in Nhulunbuy last Wednesday night, although candles are thought to be the likely cause. Police and NT Fire and Rescue members were kept tending to the fire. Officer-in-charge of Nhulunby Police Senior Sergeant Brendan said the fire was reported at around 8.45pm on May 16, however, upon Police arrival, the single-storey home

on Sinclair Street was fully engulfed in flames. “NT Fire and Rescue were in attendance and extinguished the blaze within a short time, however, the house was seriously damaged by the flames,” Snr Sgt Muldoon said. The Fire Investigator and a forensic photographer arrived from Darwin on Thursday morning. “Investigations into the exact cause of the blaze are continuing, however, at this stage we believe it

may have started from candles left lit inside the premises. “This again shows the need to install photo-electric smoke alarms in homes. “Thankfully, no one was home at the time but it could easily have ended in tragedy.” Office-in-Charge of Nhulunbuy Fire and Rescue Colin Snowden said the fire showed how imperative it was for homes to be fitted with early detection devices.

The Fire station in Nhulunbuy is not manned 24 hours a day although firefighters are always on call. Early detection ensures the crew can get to the station and attend the fire as soon as possible. Mr Snowden was on site and made sure there were no occupants inside the house, while the rest of his crew went for the fire truck. It was there within minutes and they ensured there was a containment line so adjoining homes were

The cast of Barbecue on a countdown to opening night.

GOVE Arts Theatre (GAT) is celebrating 40 years of entertaining the people of Nhulunbuy in 2012. One of the oldest associations in Gove it was started in 1972 by an enthusiastic band of volunteers eager to try their hands at amateur theatre. During the past 40 years GAT has entertained audiences with productions including dramas, comedies, musicals, theatre restaurants, movie audience participation nights, one act play festivals, theatre sports and variety shows. As with most clubs and associations GAT is a volunteer organisation and relies heavily on the involvement of its members and the community at large. Cast and crew for each production give generously of their time to ensure delivery of a polished performance every moment they step into the lights. For many cast members GAT shows are the first time they step onto the stage and perform while for the audience it is often their introduction to live theatre. Home to GAT is The Cell - a 65-seat theatre located in the Captain Cook Community Centre next-door to the IGA supermarket. Besides stage and seating this area also includes a lighting box, workshop, dressing rooms, props room and set storage areas.

GAT has accumulated some interesting items over the years and has an eclectic collection of costumes and props to draw from for productions. To celebrate this milestone Gove Arts Theatre is presenting three major productions to Nhulunbuy audiences in 2012. The first is a two-act comedy - Barbecue written by Australian playwright, David Peebles. Chris Andrews is once again taking the reins as director and has drawn together a cast of experienced actors and acting novices to the stage. The action centres round that quintessential Aussie social event - the barbecue - and follows the efforts of the Cooper family to settle into their new home in Grand Bay. The season will run on May 25-26, June 1-2-8-9 at the Cell. Tickets are $ 40 each and are currently on sale at Lynne Walker’s office. The final night is already sold out and other nights still have some seats left so be sure to get you ticket early to avoid dissapointment. Dinkum Assorted is an all female, singing and dancing musical written by another Australian, Linda Aronson. A new director to GAT, Barbara White, brings her theatre experience from Townsville to produce this exciting play. With a large cast of 15 characters this is a huge undertaking for GAT but promises to be a wonderful theatre

event for audiences. The season is scheduled for midSeptember and, if you are interested in joining the cast and crew, come along to an information evening on Thursday, May 24, at 8 Pandora Circuit starting at 7.30pm. Auditions will be held on Saturday, May 26, at NRSFC club rooms at the Captain Cook Community Centre from 9am - 3pm. For more information about this production please contact Bernice Cox (0407 783 345). The culmination of the year’s events will be a theatre restaurant in November. Always a great audience pleaser this restaurant comes with a twist. It is designed to tantalize all your senses and will be a completely new and fascinating experience for the theatre goer in Nhulunbuy. GAT is keeping the details under wraps for this one but you will not want to miss it. Planning has already commenced so watch this space for more information later in the year. GAT is always looking for new members. The monthly meeting is held on second Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm at The Cell. If you have ever dreamed of winning that Oscar then GAT is a great place to start - whether it be best actor, director, screenplay, lighting, sound, costumes - we can help you get there.

Crocodile shot at Elcho last week. Photo courtesy NT Police.

Croc had appetite for dogs, nappies and footy A ROGUE crocodile that was killing dogs was shot at Elcho Island last Tuesday. Police notified rangers over two weeks ago that the large saltwater crocodile was lunging at dogs and had taken at least one at the beach near the Galuwinku community. Rangers shot the 3.5 metre crocodile as it lunged at another dog on Mission Beach on the morning of May 15.

Northern Watch Commander Greg Pusterla said the crocodile posed a threat to the community and had attempted to attack another dog the day before. “Out there yesterday afternoon the crocodile spotted a dog on the beach and started going towards the beach in the direction of the dog,” he said. “Fortunately someone called the dog away and the croc then retreated back out

into the water.” It had been deemed ‘a definite risk to human life’ by local police who set about finding the croc with the help of rangers at Elcho Island. A football, a pair of shorts, a fish, a nappy and the skeletal remains of a dog were among the stomach contents. The croc was taken and buried at a place determined by local people.

Work is underway to improve facilities at Garma

WORK has begun at Gulkula, the site of the annual Garma Festival, to establish the Garma Cultural Studies Institute (GCSI). Infrastructure development, repairs and maintenance work has begun onsite. The GCSI will serve as a public educational and cultural institution dedicated to the research and teaching of Yolngu knowledge and traditions. It will also showcase the inter-relationship to western knowledge and tradition through a broad range of perspectives which will include music, language and art by drawing on the heritage and resources of the East Arnhem region. The Yothu Yindi Foundation (YFF) is working together with the support and funding of the Gumatj Corporation, FAHCSIA, the Indigenous Land Corporation and John T Reid Charitable Trusts to ensure that work on site is tracking to enable the Gulkula site to be operational in time for the Garma Key Forum on September 1-2, 2012. YYF would like to remind the public that the annual Garma Festival this year has been severely reduced to enable YYF resources to establish the GCSI which will, in 2013, be made available for use as a facility to conduct community events to members of the public throughout the year. YYF has received much interest in corporate groups and government departments requesting the use of Gulkula for the purpose of management retreats, cultural awareness programs, departmental meetings, school camps and tourist visits to the region. Currently Gulkula is a construction site and public access is restricted. Security and signs indicating the area is not accessible has been developed in order to ensure OH&S measures are enforced for the safety of the general community. YYF would kindly like to request local residents avoid entering onto the Gulkula site as activity increases in preparation for 2013. Information regarding the Institute may be sought through the YYF office on 08 89 412 900 or admin@garmafestival.com.au

NEWS THIS year Miwatj Health Aboriginal Corporation (Miwatj Health) celebrates its 20th anniversary of providing comprehensive primary health care to the Yolgnu people of East Arnhem Land. The area they cover extends from about Ramingining in the west to Groote Eylandt in the east, and from Yirrkala in the north to Numbulwar in the south. Miwatj Health’s 20-year celebrations on May 26 will acknowledge the vision of Yolgnu leaders in creating a successful and region-wide health service controlled by Aboriginal people. Mr Eddie Mulholland CEO of Miwatj Health said: “Miwatj Health began life in 1992. “The concept of a health organisation covering this whole of East Arnhem Land was the creation of Aboriginal people from all communities and associations across this region. “Miwatj Health is proof that Aboriginal communitycontrolled health organisations are the key to sustainability and growth in delivering successful health outcomes within Indigenous communities. “The success of Miwatj Health also emphasizes the achievements of Yolgnu people in being able to determine their own destiny, within their own communities, for their own people,” he said. “It is also testament to Miwatj Health’s founding members - our former Chairman, the late Mr Djekurra OAM, and our current board member Mr Wali Wunungmurra - that Miwatj Health has continued to grow in strength, due largely to our steadfast and unwavering continuation of the vision determined by them all those years ago. “The forthcoming transition of the NT Department of Health clinic in Yirrkala to Miwatj Health in July of this year is further evidence that Aboriginal Community Control is an essential strategy in ‘Closing the Gap’.” In a joint statement with NT Health’s Tricia Wake, he said this historical agreement between NTG and Miwatj Health highlights the Government’s partnership commitment to Indigenous communities people and to closing the gap on Indigenous disadvantage in a concerted way. NT Health’s Director of Remote Health,Ms Wake said: “We have worked productively to build a partnership with Miwatj Health and the community built on trust and mutual respect. The transition of the clinic represents the Department’s remote policy commitment to actively supporting the ways Indigenous people are addressing health challenges.” “This commitment was outlined in the milestone document, Pathways to Community Control, involving AMSANT, NTG and the Commonwealth. The framework aims at supporting Aboriginal communities’ control in the planning, development and management of primary health care and community care services in a manner that is both commensurate with their capabilities and aspirations and consistent with the objective of efficient, effective and equitable health systems functioning.” Mr Mullholland said that they are pleased that Miwatj Health and the Department are working together and cooperating in a way that builds on community strength.

Sebastian Pascoe

TWO locals have been selected among 50 Indigenous leaders of the future to meet in Canberra this week from May 23-29 to debate issues affecting their communities and country at the first National Indigenous Youth Parliament (NIYP). East Arnhem Shire Council sport and recreation officer Sebastian Pascoe and Belicia Baird, of Gapuwiyak, will represent East Arnhem Land. The NIYP aims to promote youth-led advocacy, active community leadership and the development of a group of future Indigenous leaders. Run by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) in conjunction with the YMCA to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Indigenous right to vote in federal elections the Youth Parliament is designed to help close the gap on Indigenous disadvantage in electoral participation. Sebastian and Belicia will join fellow members in Canberra to learn how government works, how laws are made and have workshops in public speaking and honing their media skills. They will also have an opportunity to meet with political leaders, MPs and senators. Adding to an eventful 2012, Sebastian has this year also received an award from the East Arnhem Shire Council, Youth Sports and Recreation for outstanding leadership. He works with children and young people between the ages of five and 25 years in programs such as the after school care program, vacation care, sports and youth mentoring. Sebastian is also involved in a community driven youth group that mentors young people with substance abuse problems. EASC youth, sport and recreation regional manager, Mrs Cherie Forbes said: “Sebastian is a positive role model within the youth services program and promotes living a healthy lifestyle and the importance of education with the participants of our programs.” Belicia Baird works as an assistant teacher in her community of Gapuwiyak which is in the East Arnhem Region. She will represent Yolngu people and give a voice to her community. She is involved in local sports and cultural activities. She is passionate about issues that affect her community, for example, housing shortages, training for health workers, and people dying at a young age. She is confident and open and is multilingual. They will be joined by fellow Territorians Nateesha Collins, Dwayne Jones, Chanston Paech and Tara Liddy to form the historic National Indigenous Youth Parliament from an impressive field of more than 180 applicants.

MAGNT curator brings new perspective A TERRITORIAN with significant curatorial experience locally and interstate has joined MAGNT’s Curator of the Museum and Art Gallery of Aboriginal art John the Northern Territory (MAGNT) Waight. as the popular institution’s new curator of Indigenous Art and Material Culture. MAGNT acting director Darlene Lion congratulated John Waight on his recent appointment saying it will bring a new and different perspective to this year’s Telstra Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award (NATSIAA). “John was born in Darwin and has spent most of his adult life directly involved in the arts, more recently as Darwin City Council’s curator of the Bombing of Darwin exhibition at the Chan Contemporary Art Space in Darwin,” Ms Lion said. “Other past experience includes three years as manager at Maningrida Arts and Culture and at the Australian National Maritime Museum, where he worked for seven years as the institution’s Indigenous curator and liaison officer. “With this year’s 29th Telstra NATSIAA held once again in August, John’s role will be to exhibit the 63 art works that were recently pre-selected to contest this year’s NATSIAA and be in the running for the main prize of $40,000.Art works are set to start arriving in coming weeks with this year’s Awards ceremony taking place on the MAGNT lawns on Friday, August 10.”

A COMMENT on our facebook page added some additional information to a photo on the front page of the Arafura Times on May 2-8. The photo (left) was that of William Macgrath and the comment was from Jan Macgrath “William’s great-great-grandmother’s brother, Private William Charles Tooney, fought in France in WW1 at Poziers, Fromel and Ypres. He was wounded several times, gased in the trenches but returned to Sydney in 1919 where he died of the gas’s damage to his lungs, six months later in that September at his mother’s house. “I have a very sad letter he wrote to her from the trenches.I have grown some rosemary on his grave at Rookwood Cememtery (Sydney). “Yesterday I put some white flowering ground cover vine in the same pot on his parents’ grave; they are buried together. Nice link of the William’s don’t you think?”

‘A chance for change’ COUNTRY Liberals candidate for Nhulunbuy Allen Fanning (above) says the August 25 election gives families, workers and businesses a chance to bring real change to the Arnhem Land electorate. Mr Fanning said after more than 30 years of Labor representation a change is needed to bring fresh ideas and a new approach to communities in Nhulunbuy. “After 30 years, Labor now takes Nhulunbuy for granted,” Mr Fanning said. “The best way to end Government inertia and to get things done is to vote for the Country Liberals at the next election. “We are ready to govern and have a plan to bring responsible decision making to improve the lives of all Territorians.” Mr Fanning said the latest Labor Budget contained a glaring example of the extent of Labor’s complacency. One of the infrastructure projects contained in the budget - $1.2million to construct six two-bedroom units at Gove Hospital - has already been completed. “The Country Liberals will bring a fresh approach to tackling some of the issues facing community’s in the electorate,” he said. “We are committed to tackling the law and order issues in the town including taking steps to stamp out ‘fridging’, which is a direct consequence of the Government’s alcohol laws. “I am committed to fighting for upgrades to Gove Hospital and the Country Liberals are opposed to licensing and permits for recreational anglers.” An electrician Allen moved to Nhulunbuy in 2005. He and wife Wendy are expecting their first child in July. “I have been an active participant in community events over the past seven years and will continue to do so if elected to Parliament,” he said. “The upcoming election isn’t about political parties and candidates - it’s about Nhulunbuy residents and the issues that affect them.”

AN amazing photo. This photo was taken at an ANZAC Day picnic at the Granites. Lynda de Gruchy said it was her favourite photo. “It was such a fluke that I caught the reflection of the beach in the bubble,” she sad.

NEWS

School wants your dockets for more supplies THE Woolworths earn-and-learn program was a huge success last year and effectively raised close to $4000 for Nhulunbuy Primary School. Principal Matt Watson said that, in partnership with Modern Teaching Aids, a leading supplier of educational resources, they were able to redeem the points for classroom teaching resources. “Public schools rely heavily on fundraising and this is a great community partnership and a brilliant way for community members to support their school with high quality resources. “Last year we exceeded our target of 36,000 points by 6000 points,” Mr Watson said.

“This year’s target is 50,000 points which should equate to about $4500 worth of fabulous new learning resources. “Last year we purchased hands on maths resources. “These resources have arrived and are out in the classrooms. “I would urge all parents and community members to get behind this initiative and support Nhulunbuy Primary School and our commitment to high quality public education.” RIGHT: Children enjoying some of the resources they received after last year’s program - from left Levi Norsworthy, Zali Furhmann and Bailey Monteiro.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th) A dream will help you to sort out your feelings about a new acquaintance. The person you dream about won’t be quite the same as the person you know in real life: the dream person will be a reflection of your true feelings. Romance. A new relationship may suddenly become more serious this week. At times, though, you may not be comfortable with the pace.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) Your energy levels will be very high at the moment. This will be an excellent time to make progress on jobs which you have been putting off. Romance. AFL legends coming to town FOR the next two weeks there will be a strong AFL presence in Gove. This week NT Thunder is making an appearance on May 23 and 24 and next week AFL legends Shane (Crawf) Crawford and Robert ‘Dipper’ DiPierdomenico will be visiting on May 30 and 31. Gove Operations Pacific Aluminium is bringing six NT Thunder players to town and they will be conducting clinics at local schools. On Wednesday they will be visiting schools in Nhulunbuy and then have a run with the Old Codgers at Hindle Oval at 5pm. On Thursday then will tour the town before heading out to the Clontarf Foundation in Yirrkala fro a clinic and in the afternoon there will be a football match at Yirrkala Oval at 2.45pm. They will then visit the Auskick players in Nhulunbuy at 4.30pm. The following week two big names in AFL Football will be visiting Gove. Crawf and Dipper will be visiting Gapuwiyak on May 30 and Nhulunbuy on May 31. They will fly into Gove on May 30 and head to Gapuwiyak for activities that day and then head to Nhulunbuy that evening to prepare for activities on Thursday in Nhulunbuy before flying back to Darwin. On Thursday they will visit the Auskick practice session at Nhulunbuy Primary School oval where they will work with the youngsters during training. It is hoped as many kids as possible will attend both clinics so neighbouring communities are invited to attend. This is a chance for young players to mingle with the football icons as well as get their autographs. Robert ‘Dipper’ DiPierdomenico is a former Australian rules footballer in the VFL/AFL Dipper was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2007. Beginning his career with the Hawthorn Football Club in 1975, DiPierdomenico, or the ‘Big Dipper’ as he is affectionately known, kick-started his career in 1978, culminating in a best-on-ground performance in the 1978 VFL Grand Final. He went on to play 240 games and kick 130 goals with the Hawks, retiring in 1991, including five day and five night premierships with one of the most successful eras of domination a club has ever seen. DiPierdomenico was initially assigned guernsey number #53, but subsequently wore number #9. He was known for his toughness, and the moustachioed Dipper was one of the much-loved and most media-covered characters in the VFL during the 1980s. DiPierdomenico won the Brownlow Medal, tying with

Greg Williams, who was playing for Sydney at the time. Later in the week, he would win his third Premiership medallion as the Hawks defeated Carlton by 42 points. Late in the first quarter of the 1989 VFL Grand Final, DiPierdomenico was running backwards to take a mark when he was met solidly from behind by Geelong star Gary Ablett. The force of the collision broke several of DiPierdomenico’s ribs and punctured one of his lungs. Despite the pain and unaware of the extent of the damage, DiPierdomenico continued to play until the final siren. Shane (Crawf) Crawford is a former Australian rules footballer having played for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League. He is currently an Australian television personality who appears regularly on the AFL Footy Show. Crawford spent his childhood in Finley, New South Wales and played his junior football with the Finley Football Club. He attended boarding school at Assumption College in Kilmore, Victoria and was selected by Hawthorn with the 13th pick in the 1991 AFL Draft. He made his debut in 1993 Crawford played 305 career AFL games. He is also a four-time AllAustralian player and played in three International Rules series’ for Australia. He became Captain of Hawthorn in 1999 and that season also won the AFL’s top individual honours, the Brownlow Medal and t h e L e ig h M a t th e w s Trophy. He has won four Hawthorn Best & Fairest Awards (1998, 1999, 2002, 2003) and came second in the Brownlow in 2003, losing to the winner by one vote. He was also a member of Hawthorn’s 2008 Premiership side. He played his 300th game for Hawthorn against Brisbane in Round 19 in 2008 in Launceston. On September 27, 2008, Crawford won his first Premiership in his 305th AFL match, aged 34. He played more AFL games before receiving his first Premiership Medal than any other player. He ended his career after Hawthorn won the 2008 Grand Final, and is now remembered as one of the greatest midfielders in the modern era of AFL football. Auskick organisers are looking for sponsors to assist with a barbecue and fruit. For further information contact Mel Foggin a.h. on 0077 060 168.

2 Gove golfers Nominations for East Arnhem Sport’s Award winners at NT men’s titles Nomination for Junior Sports person ANTHONY QUAYLE

Anthony Quayle and Allen Fanning take out prizes at NT Men’s golf titles. FIVE members of the Gove Country Golf Club took part in the NT Men’s Open Golf in Alice Springs recently. Anthony Quayle took out the resident’s trophy and Allen Fanning won the B Grade competition. Players converged on Alice Springs from across Australia with 156 entrants in the competition. Damian Sanders finished mid field in the A Grade and Dave Rossiter and Graham Baulch finished midfield in the B Grade competition. ANZAC Day was a practice day for the players and April 26 was the first day of play and the windy conditions proved challenging for all players. Fanning said: “The greens were like putting on mirrors.” Quayle scored 76 on day 1, 71 on day 2, 76 on day 3 and 71 on day 4 with Fanning scoring 86-89-86-93 and winning his section by 13 strokes. Fanning said: “Alice Springs is the best course in the NT with the McDonnell Ranges proving a perfect backdrop.” He reminded players in Gove that nominations are now open for the Airnorth Golf Open to be held at the club on June 9-11.

SEVENTEEN-year-old Anthony Quayle has been playing golf since he was six-years old and now attendeds the Hills Golf Academy in Queensland. Anthony is currently ranked 12th in Australia. At the age of six he decided he wanted to play golf and started to ask his parents for a set of golf clubs. The size of Nhulunbuy allowed Anthony to never be far from the golf course which gave him the opportunity to develop a practice regime which involves commitment and hard work. This is a practice he still embraces to this day. After encouragement and recommendations from his first coach Tony Albon, who visited Nhulunbuy regularly to run coaching sessions, he attended his first junior clinic held in Darwin. What made this so significant for him was that he was only eight-years-old and the official minimum age for the clinic at that time was 10. He also went on to be the youngest person to represent their home state at a national event in Australia. He went to Queensland to attend a boarding school but continued with his golf. 2008 which saw him claim the overall men’s gross and nett, the junior overall gross and nett, the longest drive, nearest the pin and he made his first eagle. This had never happened in the history of that tournament and he found himself enjoying some notoriety with interviews and newspaper articles. He has competed in the Chief Minster’s Cup on two occasions representing the country team as a captain’s pick based on his performances. On the first occasion he won three of five matches and defeated the NT’s number one amateur. On the second occasion he won four of the five matches and again defeated the NT’s number one amateur. After twelve months back in Nhulunbuy and continued efforts with his golf, Anthony’s parents made a commitment to support his goals to be a touring professional. This commitment came with the proviso that he also secure a good education. After considerable research and establishing what was practical Anthony applied to Hills International College and Golf Academy and, was accepted into the talented golfer The East Arnhem Sports Awards are being program. held in October and each month finalists will Anthony has completed three
