AFTER 40 years of service, Jonetani Rika (OAM) officially retiredwith Layhapuy Homelands Aboriginal Coorporation on Friday, May 25. The surprise celebration retraced many unique moments in history as friends and colleagues shared their experiences and gave tributes to Jonetani, for supporting Yolngu people’s dreams of returning to their Homelands. Jonetani arrived in Australia in 1965 from Fiji under the Methodist Church Program to work as an agriculturalist in Yirrkala. In 1972, Mr Mununggurr (who became the first Chairman of Laynhapuy) asked Jonetani on behalf of an elder, Mr Mununggurr, to help their people move back to their tribal lands. This meeting was the birth of the Homeland movement and Garrthalala became the first Homeland. Many more clans followed suit and in 1985, Layhapuy Homelands Association

The Mission Statement established by the clan leaders supported Yolngu “To determine our own future, to manage our own affairs, to become self sufﬁcient so that homeland mala can continue to live in peace and harmony”. Jonetani made it his lifework to fulﬁl the Yolngu people dreams and on June 11 1990, was awarded The Medal of the Order of Australia in recognition for his service to the Aboriginal Community. AFL legends Robert “Dipper” DiPierdomenico and Shane Crawford were in Gove last week to promote the NAB AFL Auskick program in remote communities. The pair visited communities in Nhulunbuy and Gapuwiyak in

order to promote opportunities to play footy to all Australians no matter where they live. DiPierdomenico had youngsters doing push-ups and was impressed by the athleticism of some of the young players. He also demonstrated he had what it takes as he dropped for 20 (push-ups) after a young player, Murray, marked three of his kicks - no mean feat for any player. Some 185,000 children are in-

Artist in Darwin exhibition A TEENAGER has had her work included in an exhibition in Darwin. Kirsten Hill, 19, was one of 40 year 12 students whose works were selected at the end of last year for inclusion in the Exit Art exhibition with features contemporary youth art of the NT. The exhibition opened in March and will run until June 17 and, since its opening, Kirsten’s aunt, uncle and grandparents have travelled from Adelaide to see her works on display. AWARD-winning musician Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu was recognised for his outstanding contribution to the arts at this year’s 2012 National Indigenous Arts Awards, presented by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board (ATSIAB) of the Australia Council for the Arts. Croc spotted at East Woody This crocodile was spotted at East Woody last week. Is he inviting me to come in and play?

THE first thought was that there was a big stick floating in the sea but, just in case, the early morning walker moved away from the water. A few shots, with a camera, later it was realised it was not a log but a big crocodile going out for a morning swim. He was spotted at East Woody

heading toward the island and then turned towards shore before it headed back towards Middle Beach. Then he disappeared so the lone walker decided she too would disappear and headed up the sand. This was at low tide on Tuesday morning (May 29) at he was very clearly visible for six minutes from 8.15am.

Needless to say she did not continue walking along the water’s edge - because she could not see him resurface and wasn’t hanging around to wait for him

A wet start to the Dry season with 171.8 mm where the average for May is only 89.3 mm. The wettest single day was at McCluer Island with 90.6 mm on May 10, followed by Yirrkala Tropical Gardens with 62mm on May 25. Groote Eylandt Airport set a new May rainfall record with 76.4mm. “Djama was, me and him worked together the missionary way, Christian djama. God was working with him and helping him. Thanks again, very much.” East Arnhem Shire President Banambi Wunungmurra said in the early days they used to call Jonetani Tarzan, because he lived in the jungle. “He had a tough time in those days, it was a missionary days. “In those days, it was challenging for my wawa (brother), big challenges. “They (the people) said ‘are you going back home (to Fiji)?’ He said: ‘no, this is my home.’ ” Member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker said Jonetani’s name will always be synonymous with the Homelands movement and his passion to assist Yolngu to return to their traditional clan estates where they can lead culturally strong and healthy lives on the lands of their ancestors. Denise Fincham met Jonetani nearly 30 years ago. “Adrian Wagg had asked me to quote on materials to build Homeland houses. I was

introduced to the Homelands and it was to be the highlight of my working life,” she said. “Jonetani explained in detail the vision of Laynhapuy. It was written on the wall in his ofﬁce,” she said. “I hope it is still there today because it inspired me and many others and kept us focused on the purpose of the organisation. “Jonetani explained to me that it was not for us to lead, the Yolngu knew where they wanted to go. It was for us to assist and support. “I worked with Laynha for many years with champion men, such as Adrian Wagg and Paul Bird. These were ﬁne people, their leader was Jonetani and his example, dedication, and sense of justice inspired them. “This quiet and humble man is the strongest leader I met in my life and the one with the greatest integrity. “Enjoy your retirement and know that your work and your vision inspired many others. “I know you kept a diary and look forward to reading a book you must write, as it would be truly a great Australian story.”

story began . . .

Jonetani’s Story, where it all began . . . This story begins back in Fiji. At the young age of 25, Jonetani Rika arrived in Sydney in 1965. Having completed two different agriculturalist courses over seven years Jonetani continued his studies and enrolled in a Bible College course. Five months into the course, The Standing Committee of the Methodist Church of Fiji received a letter from the Methodist mission board in Sydney requesting the services of a qualified agriculturalist to work and set up a farm in Yirrkala. The heads of the College met with Jonetani to discuss his future and chose him to go to Australia. From humble beginnings Jonetani and his young wife, Losalini, said goodbye to their families in Fiji and embarked on a new life in a new land, to a place that God had chosen for him, to work with the Yolngu people of Arnhem Land. On a Saturday morning in August, 1965, Jonetani and Losalini flew into Yirrkala. That same evening he went with mission staff and Yolngu to Melville Bay to unload the community’s supplies that had just arrived from Brisbane. The superintendent told Jonetani he would meet the old people the next morning at Sunday school. At that first meeting, the old people liked Jonetani and the superintendent added teaching Sunday school to his job description. The Methodist Church Mission also appointed Jonetani to the role of Regional Community Development Officer. This involved a lot of travelling to help other community development workers establish their communities across the region, which included Elcho Island, Milingimbi, Ramingining, Goulburn Island and Crocker Island. In the early years the Yirrkala farm was a thriving enterprise supplying fresh food to feed the local community. Where the Yirrkala oval is now was once a thriving pineapple plantation and sweet potato plot. When Nabalco first set up its mining operation, the Yirrkala farm supplied fresh produce until the demand increased and the town of Nhulunbuy became self-sufficient. In 1972, Mr Mununggurr (who became the first Chairman of Laynhapuy), requested a meeting with Jonetani on behalf of an elder, Mr Mununggurr. It is then that Jonetani was asked to help the Yolngu move back to their tribal lands. Jonetani was a man they trusted and knew would do everything he could to make this happen. Jonetani, the two Djapu Clan leaders established the first Homeland at Garrthalala Soon after they began setting up Gurrumuru Homeland and Gawirrin Gumana (AO) was working with Jonetani on this project. Knowing that his Homeland of Gan Gan was third on the list, he could not wait for them to finish working at Gurrumuru and through initiative and determination was able to access funding for a Landrover for his community. As soon as Mr Gumana got the four-wheel drive he left Jonetani at Gurrumuru to take his people back to Gan Gan. Within the next two years, the Homelands of Banyiala/ Yilpara, Wandawuy, Djarrakpi and Gurkawuy were established and many other clans followed suit. It was a very exciting time for these tribal people to move back to where they belonged. The people’s dreams had come true. They built their homes out of bush timber, corrugated iron and used sand for the floor. In each Homeland Yolngu people made airstrips by hand using shovels and axes. An old house opposite the Yirrkala Church became a small office where they co-ordinated the work. In later years, Laynhapuy moved into a larger office at the site of the old Yirrkala Brickworks or (YBE), which is where Laynhapuy is today. The Incorporation of Laynhapuy Homelands took place in 1985 and it has kept growing to this day. The Mission Statement established by the clan leaders was: “To determine our own future, to manage our own affairs, to become self sufficient so that homeland mala can continue to live in peace and harmony”.

Charges alleging supplying drugs to Arnhem Land A 52 year-old man, who is accused of supplying of illicit substances into Aboriginal communities in Arnhem Land, will appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court charged with drug and robbery offences. Northern Territory Police arrested the man as part of a long-running operation targeting communities in the Arnhem and Katherine areas. Detective Senior Constable Luke Hoolihan said a series of warrants were issued last week resulting in

Mobile ‘phones the new drink-driving YOUNG drivers are heeding the safety messages around speeding and driving under the influence, but are putting other drivers at risk by fiddling with their phones while behind the wheel, according to new research from leading insurer AAMI. The 11th AAMI Young Drivers Index revealed that young drivers performed better in almost all of the ‘traditional’ risky driving behaviour indicators, but they are the most likely to be distracted by their mobile phone, GPS unit, iPod, radio or CD player. AAMI spokesperson Reuben Aitchison said that that ‘Nomophoboia’ – a fear of being out of reach of your mobile – seems to have set in, with over half (58%) of young drivers admitting to sending or reading a text message or MMS while driving. “The average text takes around five seconds to read. If you are going 100km/hr, you’ll hurtle along the length of a footy field with your eyes off the road, only one hand on the wheel and your mind elsewhere. “It’s an excellent sign that young drivers are less likely to drink drive and speed, but on the flipside it is shocking to think of relatively inexperienced drivers tearing down the road, not paying attention to what’s going on around them,” Mr Aitchison said. “Many of these drivers will be only a few years off their L-Plates and think they’re invincible. Amity Community Services Inc. has co-ordinated RGAW across the NT since 2004 and has once again engaged the services of Gove FM for this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event in Nhulunbuy.

Students write and illustrate own book

YOUNGSTERS from Galiwinku Community on Elcho Island and Milingimbi in East Arnhem Land have written and illustrated a new book entitled Northern Territory Animals. They are boarding students at Townsvilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Shalom Christian College where the book was launched before a large audience on May 29. The book was published by Indigenous company Black Ink Press and was written and illustrated by the Shalom pupils Lygel Brown, Pamela Wallace, Gerard Morgan, Denzel Baker, Jackie Gumbula, Martin Gurruwiwi, Caleb Gondarra, Merryl Nyikalawuy, Clinton Dhamarrandji and Vernon Dhamarrandji with support from Pamela Wallace and Cat Scanlan. It was written in both English and Djambarrpuynu words which were translated by Sandra Munyarryun, Shalomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s resident elder and liaison officer. The students, aged 14 to 16, board at Shalom College and come from Galiwinku Community on Elcho Island and Milingimbi in East Arnhem Land. The languages spoken at Galiwinku are commonly known as Yolngu-matha, and, in this case, Djambarrpuynu. These talented students chose to

MORE groups are joining the Yolngu nations call to scrap the federal Stronger Futures Laws. In May a group of traditional owners, Yolngu Nations Assembly, representing 8000 people in Arnhem Land demanded the laws be scrapped or they would refuse participation in land lease negotiations or on approving exploration licences. Central Australian Aboriginal communities have joined their counterparts in Arnhem Land by threatening a revolt against the Gillard Government’s continuation of the Northern Territory intervention. Labor’s Stronger Futures draft laws are before the Senate and likely to pass with bipartisan support in mid-June. The laws will continue the intervention policies for another

10 years and include jail terms for alcohol possession as well as a controversial program that cuts parents’ welfare payments if their children do not attend school. NT Aboriginal communities widely oppose the measures and say they were not properly consulted on the government’s plans and that the laws are racist. North-East of Alice Springs, Alyawarr homeland communities - including Lake Nash, Utopia and Ampilatwatja, covering 3500 people - have made their own pledge to fight the laws. “We call on our people to reject any meetings or discussions with government-appointed bureaucrats, or representatives of government agencies on Stronger Futures laws,” spokesman Richard Downs said in a statement. Mr Downs said communities

want the power to make their own decisions to shape their future rather than being bullied by the federal government. He demanded that the federal government subject the laws to a human-rights review and said his people would not cooperate until that occurred. The Gillard government has refused to allow a new parliamentary committee on human rights to review the draft laws because they were introduced to parliament before the committee was established. Last month, the United Nations office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights’ Pacific representative Matilda Bogner challenged the federal government to overturn that decision, to ensure Australia was meeting its obligations.

 letters to the editor Suicide a major problem in Indigenous communities SATURDAY, May 26, was National Sorry Day, a day when we can say sorry for the past injustices experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It’s also a time to commit to giving the descendants of the first Australians a better deal especially when it comes to improving their mental health and helping to reduce the impact of depression and anxiety in their communities. Untreated depression is a major risk factor for suicide and sadly, depression, related drug and alcohol use and suicide remain a huge problem in indigenous communities, with rates significantly higher than in the wider Australian population. A recent report, “Gone too Soon” on youth suicide rates in the Northern Territory shows that indigenous suicides increased from 18.1 to 30.1 per 100,000, while the rate for non-aboriginal youth had decreased from 4.1 to 2.6 per 100,000. Statistics from other parts of Australia are equally worrying. This is absolutely not good enough and we should all be concerned about this situation - not just on National Sorry Day - but every day of the year. With this in mind beyondblue, in partnership with The Lowitja Institute, will shortly be convening

Also supporting the Yolngu Nations Assembly are former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, former Aboriginal affairs minister (late 1970s) Ian Viner, The Catholic and Uniting Churches, and St Vincent de Paul Attorney-General Nicola Roxon has the power to refer the issue to the human-rights committee. Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin has refused to comment on why the draft laws will not go to the human-rights committee but said the laws comply with the Racial Discrimination Act. Gove a centre of artistic talent THE size and isolated location of our remote location might present all sorts of Electoral News challenges, but, if there’s one by NT Member for Nhulunbuy thing I do know, it’s that we LYNNE WALKER have a diverse, lively and vibrant visual and performing arts scene here on the Gove Peninsula. We have nationally and internationally recognised artists producing and selling works through Buku Larrnggay Mulka Centre at Yirrkala and several artists once again selected to exhibit at this year’s National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art award. We have some fabulous artistic talent in our local schools and, if you haven’t seen the outdoor mosaics produced by students at Nhulunbuy Christian College, I’d recommend a visit. We have one of the largest dance schools in the Territory with Arafura Dance, offering a diverse range of genres under the direction of the very talented Rachael Wallis, who, along with her daughter Ineke and Dhalinbuy woman, Janet Munyarrayun, has just returned from London having performed at the Silver Jubilee celebrations for the Queen. And we have the entirely volunteer-driven Gove Arts Theatre - turning 40 this year - which is soon to conclude its highly successful three weekend season of Barbecue. The follow-up for the season is the much anticipated musical comedy Dinkum Assorted due to open in September. To cap it all off we have an exciting program of events shaping up for the community’s 40th year anniversary with Pacific Aluminium bringing us the Darwin Symphony Orchestra in August. The Gove Peninsula Festival will also be launched July 26 with a week’s worth of arts events with the theme “40 Years Past, 40 Years Ahead”. Competitions for writing, photography and art have been launched and the festival will culminate on Saturday, August 4, with a finale day of community celebrations: a float parade, stalls, live music and family fun. The NT Government has been a strong supporter of past festivals with $20,000 to GPF in 2011 and hopefully a similar contribution in 2012. Small and isolated our community might be, but we can still boast some incredible local talent and an arts scene which is as unique as it is enviable!

Smoking doubles cervical cancer risk

IT IS well known that smoking increases the risk of lung cancer and other illness, but Territory women are being warned that smoking also doubles the risk of developing cervical cancer. “The younger a woman starts smoking the higher the risk of developing cervical cancer,” Well Women’s Cancer Screening Program manager Karen Forster said. “It’s important women kick the smoking habit as one of the ways to protect themselves against developing cervical cancer. “It’s also extremely important women have regular pap tests to screen for early signs of the disease.”

Friendships were made. NHULUNBUY High School students from years 8 and 9 have had the opportunity over recent years to participate in a 10-week course in Yolngu Matha. With resources from Charles Darwin University, involvement from local elders and excursions, it is hoped that students gain a meaningful insight into the language (Gumatj) and culture of their local area. In week six this study group accepted an invitation to visit the community of Dhalinbuy, about 1 1/2 hours 4WD away. Accompanying the students were teaching staff Lawrence Walker, Don McKinnon and Tara Canobie. Also accompanying the group were parent volunteers Lynne Walker and Shaun Canobie. For most of the non-Indigenous students this was their first visit to a Homelands community. After an initial period of ice-breaking and some prompting from teachers it was pleasing to see students getting to know each other and forming friendships. They had a classroom session and NHS students shared some of the work they have been doing and were given a strong lesson from Yali on aspects of Yolngu World View and Malk, Bapurru, Likan Yaku, Gurrutu and Yirralka. A game of volleyball was organised as a barbecue lunch and fruit was prepared in the background thanks to Lynne, Eirini, Don and Shaun. This was followed by a short walk over to the (Cato) river where everyone gathered for group photographs. Unfortunately, it was soon time to return as they had planned to make it back for the buses at Nhulunbuy around 2:30pm. Everyone agreed it was a great outing and looks forward to participating in something similar, perhaps more extended, again. Special thanks went to Rhoda Shine, Tara and Shaun, Lynne and Don at NHS, and to Ruth, Garumma Marika, Sonia Munyarryun, Eirini Mbouti and Yali Mununggurr at Dhalinbuy Community School. Thanks were also extended to Banul Munyarryun (community elder) as well as the Yirrkala Homelands Schools for the invitation.

Last week AFL legends Robert ‘Dipper’ DiPierdomenico and Shane Crawford visited the Auskick training session to offer their expertise much to the delight of the youngsters.

REMOTE JOBS AND COMMUNITIES PROGRAM

Jobs and stronger communities for people in remote Australia Invitation to Information and Consultation Sessions The new Remote Jobs and Communities Program will provide a simpler, more integrated and ﬂexible approach to employment services and participation in remote areas of Australia from 1 July 2013.

The program will assist people to get the skills needed to find and keep a job and help build stronger communities. The Australian Government has already talked to a lot of people and organisations about these changes and the new service responds to the needs of people living in remote areas. Information and consultation sessions will be held in regional centres and remote communities across Australia from late May to mid-July 2012. Come and find out how the changes will benefit you, your organisation or your community. You can also talk to the Government about how the new service should operate in your area. B11_0734

Human Resource Administration Ofﬁcer

Renal Care – Community Worker

This position will provide administrative support to the HR Manager with duties including coordination of recruitment processes, maintaining HR systems and providing timely reports on HR activities. To complement this position we are looking for an individual who has attained qualiﬁcations in business administration and/or 2 years’ experience within the related ﬁeld of Human Resources.

Miwatj is currently expanding on our service delivery to our wider community supporting renal care clients. We are seeking to recruit a community worker to work closely with our Renal Care Coordinator. This person shall have a good understanding of the issues impacting on clients that are undergoing renal care. In addition, this person will act as an advocacy to client needs.

Asset Maintenance Ofﬁcer

Health Information Administrator

We are currently looking to appoint a self-motivated individual to fill the position of Asset Maintenance Officer. The key responsibilities will be the effective administration of Miwatj maintenance systems, completeness and accuracy of asset data and coordination of all maintenance services such as property (buildings, vehicles etc.) and contract works. This individual should have the ability to relate to both internal and external stakeholders, have technical knowledge of maintenance planning, preferably with related trade qualification and demonstrate excellent organisational and computer skills.

This is a newly created position. The Health Information Administrator’s (HIA) primary role is to maintain management of communicare systems - extracting, analysing health information data for the purposes of Miwatj Strategic and Operational Planning. This position also provides ongoing support and training to clinical staff utilizing communicare. The preferred candidate shall have an excellent understanding of a population approach to healthcare, experience in database maintenance and operations and possess proﬁciency in Microsoft applications. A tertiary qualiﬁcation in nursing, health science or similar will be considered favourable.

Coordinator – Child and Maternal Health RN The above position will be working within a team environment that caters for mothers and babies program; which will work toward improved access to child and maternal services. The applicant must be registered to practice in the NT as a Nurse or Aboriginal Health Worker Grade 4. Postgraduate qualiﬁcations in population/public health, midwifery, child health or a similar ﬁeld with be considered favorable. Work scheduled to start in 2013 at Roper mine MINING is expected to start next year at Western Desert Resources’ Roper Barairon-ore mining project following two major developments last week. The Northern Territory Government has given Major Project Status for the project following the signing of a Mining Agreement with the Northern Land Council and Native Title Holders earlier in the week. The project is located about

60km south of Ngukurr. In addition to the native title agreement, WDR has entered into a 20-year agreement with Mount Isa Mines which will provide access to export iron ore through a loading facility at Bing Bong. Four Yirrkala athletes for Deadly Fun Run at Uluru FOUR Yirrkala athletes will be competing in the inaugural Indigenous Marathon Project Deadly Fun Run championships in Central Australia on Saturday. Two boys, Marshall Gurruwiwi, 16, and Bukutjpi Wanambi, 9, and two girls Biyamarr Mununggurr, 15, and Dhimurru Mununggurr, 17, will be among the 26 athletes ranging from ages seven to 56 representing six Indigenous communities from across the country. They will all descend on Uluru to

take part Australia’s first Indigenous running festival held at Uluru. A number of communities in the surrounding Uluru area will also be involved. The Deadly Fun Run Series, part of Rob De Castella’s Indigenous Marathon Project, was launched late last year in a push to promote healthy living and increase participation in the sport of running in remote Indigenous communities where it was not previously recognised. Scrutineers will have a check list to use and any rule determinations on bike safety will be decided by the race steward (This is only for the pre-race checks). “The Club would like to have a Major Enduro every year for the senior riders, and we are reviewing the program looking at a dedicated mini bike event later this year,” Mr Foster said. “As you all can appreciate there is a bit of pre-work and running of the day required to ensure the riders safety from other vehicles using the bush tracks. “The north-west sector of the track is long and flat with speeds up to 130 kph. “There will be a meeting of all support personnel and committee on Thursday June 7 at 12 Mimosa Ave at 7.30pm. “Make this a memorable, fun and safe event. Lifesavers team nominated for the East Arnhem Sports Award THE Gove Peninsula SLSC Open Patrol Team has been nominated for the East Arnhem Sports Award. The Open Patrol Team consisted of captain Emma Putland, Alan Cross, Scott Whelan, Mitch Putland, Harry Parkinson and Madelaine Barnett. The Patrol competition consists of the team drawing from a ballot to receive their position on the day of the competition (this system means that all six competitors must train for all positions but don’t know which event they draw until the day). Events include a written examination, live patient assessment, resuscitation assessment, a beach patrol scenario, a full team swim, a tube rescue and board rescue race. In July 2011 the team competed in the NT Lifesaving Championships winning the gold medal, which saw the club qualify for the Australian Championships. Training started in January 2012 with pool sessions, some night theory and resuscitation work and when possible ocean work at Shady Beach (Yirrkala). Training was severely interrupted following the tragic fire at the Surf Club which saw the club lose all it’s water craft and raised the question of whether it was still viable to travel and compete. A decision was made by the team that it was even more important to attend the event and present the Gove Peninsula SLSC on a national level. In March 2012 the team travelled to the Gold Coast with the titles being held at the Broadbeach SLSC. In order to compete the

team was first required to borrow essential rescue equipment from nearby Surf Lifesaving clubs. Given the disrupted preparation, very difficult surf conditions and the level of experience in this competition the team performed commendably throughout the competition finally finishing in seventh

place. This team showed other surf clubs from around Australia that the Gove Peninsula surf club are certainly made of the right stuff and throughout the stay on the Gold Coast did the club and the town of Nhulunbuy and themselves proud.
