Search for missing sailor called off By MARJO HALLOWELL
THE search for a missing sailor was suspended on Saturday after his abandoned yacht was found last Wednesday. Bruce Edwards, 61, was last seen when he left the Gove Boat Club at 7.30pm on Tuesday, June 12, when he set off for Darwin. His abandoned yacht, Roxanne, was located by a passing vessel of pearl farmers during their change of shift about 35km from Gove last Wednesday. The hull was damaged causing the vessel to take on water. Aerial searches by Police in co-ordination with Australian Search and Rescue (AusSAR) were conducted after locating a yacht on the rocks of Cape Wilberforce. Police vessel Cadell, a chartered helicopter and SAR Dornier searched on Wednesday and, on Thursday, there were four helicopters, two fixed-wing aircraft and Dhimurru and Customs marine craft looking for Mr Edwards. Additional personnel were brought into the area and acted as spotters on the aerial and marine craft. Superintendent Michael White of the Arafura Division said: “Information suggests an EPIRB was on-board the yacht, however, may not have been activated prior to departure.” Police used information which had been downloaded from the GPS found on the vessel to ascertain where it had been and the likely search area. Datum (GPS) Buoys were dropped in the water to use tides and wind direction to indicate where anyone in the water might have drifted to. On Friday morning, Australian Marine Search and Rescue (AMSAR) handed the search back to NT Police and a CareFlight helicopter and AMSAR’s Darwin-based Dornier plane had been taken off the search. Nhulunbuy Police Officer-in-Charge Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said two foot parties and two boats searched the coast on Friday between Nhulunbuy Harbour and No Name Bay, the area indicated by the buoys. On Friday, Snr Sgt Muldoon said: “All our data is predicting if he was in the water he has been pushed toward the shore. “We’re moving our assets to focus on the coastline. “During this intensive search AusSAR, through their Rescue Co-ordination Centre (RCC) in Canberra, has provided enormous assistance by providing and co-ordinating both fixed and rotary-wing assets that have resulted in a massive coverage of the search area.
ABOVEl Photo of the stranded Roxanne. Photo courtesy of NT Police. RIGHT: Missing yachtsman Bruce Edwards. “Although the search did not result in a positive outcome no effort was spared to ensure that the missing person (Bruce Edwards) would have been located had he been in the water. AusSAR has also agreed to meet all the costs of the aerial search.” Snr Sgt Muldoon went on the thank the Northern Territory Emergency Service volunteers who assisted in the search and the Gove District Hospital who provided meals for all the searchers. The search was carried out during all available daylight hours before it was abandoned on Saturday. “This has been a tragic event for the family, but the dedication of those assisting in the search is to be commended. If further information comes to hand the search may be reinitiated,” Superintendent White said. Police are currently preparing a report for the Coroner.

FIVE residents became Australian citizens last week as they took their pledge of loyalty to Australia. The Zuglian family Fabio, Maria, Linda, 5, and Luca, 4, received their certificates acknowledging their citizenship along with Titesh Patel. The Zuglian’s youngest child, Leyla, two months, was born an Australian citizen. Fabio came from Italy and Maria from Finland. Linda and Lucan were born in Numbalwar. They arrived in East Arnhem Land in 2007 living first in Yirrkala, and then in Numbulwar for four years
before moving to Nhulunbuy last November. Fabio trained as a pilot with Mission Aviation in Melbourne before moving to the Territory. The children are multi-lingual as they speak Italian and Swedish at home. Mr Patel moved to Australia from India four years ago and has spent most of that time in Gove. He is a process engineer at Pacific Aluminium and enjoys the lifestyle in Gove. “I like it here and enjoy being part of the community,” he said.

A near miss for child crossing the road near Primary School A PEDESTRIAN outside the Nhulunbuy Primary School was shocked when she saw a young child about to cross the street. The child had approached the bollards in Jasper Road and stopped to check for traffic. An approaching car stopped and signaled for the child to cross. As they did that another car behind the stopped vehicle
blasted its horn before the driver overtook the stopped vehicle. The woman said had the child stepped away from the kerb it could have resulted in a fatality. “My heart stopped because I thought the child was in danger,” said the woman who wished not to be named. “It is only a matter of time
before someone gets injured at these crossings,” she said. “I approached the Corporation and they said they could not change them because the Town Board did not want them changed.” “There is too much confusions about the bollards,” she said. “Cars are not required to stop and children and other pedestrians

PHOTOS by JASON KEMP A LARGE crocodile (pictured keft and below) has been shot on Groote Eylandt last week after it took several pet dogs and came within 100m of a popular swimming spot. The 4.4m croc was captured and destroyed by Senior Sergeant Tony Deutrom at Alyangula last Thursday morning. Snr Sgt Deutrom said local children like to jump from a crossroad on the Angurugu River and the 30-year-old croc was moving toward that area. He said there were safety concerns surrounding the reptile coming so close to the community with its history of taking dogs. “By what the locals are saying - it’s a considerable crocodile for Groote Eylandt. “It was being more regular with attacking animals so we thought best to get rid of it. “It was an interesting day for the East Arnhem Shire Council municiple service
crew. One minute they were doing the lawn rounds, the next minute the crew was called in to help retrieve the croc from the river.” A month ago, May 15, a rogue crocodile was destroyed at Mission Beach on Elcho Island after lunging at dogs and killing at least one. Crocodiles are ever present within local waters and residents are reminded to remain vigilant when on or near waterways.

$50,000 drugs, liquor seized ALYANGUA Police have laid charges against a number of people after more than $50,000 worth of cannabis and six litres of alcohol was seized at the local airport. Officer-in-Charge of Alyangula Police said two people will appear in court next month while another has been summonsed to appear following their arrests for drug and liquor seizures at Alyangula Airport last week. “Local Police intercepted a parcel which arrived via aircraft from Darwin last Wednesday and detected an amount of liquor in the luggage of one of the alleged offenders,” Senior Sergeant Tony Deutrom said. “A total of 380 grams of cannabis in 507 clip seal bags was found packed into a paper shredder. “The cannabis has a potential street value of $50,700. Police also found three 700 millilitre bottles of rum and one 1.25 litre bottle of rum. “A 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, both from Angurugu, were arrested, charged and bailed to appear at Alyangula Court on July 11.” The man was charged with:

The woman was charged with: Supply dangerous drug in community; Possess Cannabis - Trafficable quantity; Supply cannabis - adult to child. “A 17-year-old youth from Angurugu was also arrested in relation to the matter. She has been released pending assessment for Youth Pre-Court Diversion.” In a separate incident Senior Sergeant Deutrom said a 28-year-old man will be summonsed for possessing a dangerous drug and for bringing liquor into a prescribed area. “Police allege the man was found with 13 grams of cannabis, two litres of port and one bottle of rum at the Alyangula Airport.” Senior Sergeant Deutrom said it was disappointing that people continued to flout the law and bring prescribed substances into dry communities. “It is unfortunate that an element of the community has sought to gain from substances that have a devastating affect on their own community,” he said.

THEATRE REVIEW
Barbecue: A romp on the patio PHOTOS By LYNDSAY VANDERSTOK Review supplied by GAT from an audience member. TAKE a few paper plates, an esky full of coldies, snags on the barby, a bucket of non-alcoholic punch, a lotto win, some pot pourri and a mid-life crisis, add a couple of members of the Church of the Latter Day Saints and a bloke called Col, and it’s a pretty funny romp on the patio. Gove Arts Theatre’s sell out season of Daryl Peebles Barbecue had local audiences guffawing (and blushing) in the aisles. Under the directorship of Chris Andrews, a cast made up of tested old hands and enthusiastic newcomers spun out this rollicking Australian “two act sit-com”, blending some backyard humour with the pathos of suburbia and the age old battle to fit in. Sue Nash as Connie was a vibrant, lovable mixture of Kath, Kim and Mrs New Money, and played a delightful role as loving wife and wise mother in a new and not-quite-comfy environment.
New comers Lauren Ritchie and Tiffany Kynigopolous, as teenagers Krystal and Kylie bounced through the script with a maturity beyond their years and held the line of the new generation dragged up to Grand Bay. The unhappy childhood and youthful dissatisfaction of Marian, the girl with all the money but none of the soul, came to life through Lucy Clarkson, whose off stage canoodling provided many of the laughs. Robyn Pellenat and Dave Maiden held a strong line as “old money gone bad”, with Robyn winning a few local brownie points for her colourful anti V8 commentary. Jason Dyson as straightlaced Kevin, the financial planner, kept up his record as a reliable and wholehearted player for GAT, with his cockroach sandwich adlib taking his profile to new heights. Greg Williams proved the power of the non-speaking part, with excellent timing and precise mutterings. The Mormons - Rob Povey and Nathan Singh added an hilarious combination of naivety and freshfaced-ness, and deserved the laughs they got. Shining through was the talent of Lawrence Walker, a man we see too rarely treading the boards these days, who took on the role of Col, and coloured it with his own keen sense of comedic timing and buffoonery, saying much about the place of love and family in a world too possessed with money and social climbing. Chris Andrews is an able director, giving free rein to the dramatic intent, and holding his cast together. He was strongly supported by Shelley Martin as producer, Bernice Cox as stage manager, and Graham Hanks, Herc Kynigopoulos, Colin Stiff and Eleisha Sloane in the tech box.

letter to the editor No AO for uncouth play WASTED - $120 on Gove Arts Theatre production of Barbecue. I was disgusted by the script and the production. I found it offensive, uncouth, rough - the sexual connotations, references, gestures, actions and smut. But it was the attack, ‘knocking’ and undermining of religion that I found most offensive. Furthermore I am disturbed that several of the cast and crew are ‘educators’, presumably pillars of our society, who have a great influence upon the younger generations. Is ‘knocking’ religion encouraged in 21st century schools? I think that the only time I laughed during this so-called ‘comedy’, was during the very good performance of David Maiden, whom I do not know, at the end of the play when the character, Len McKenzie, stands up to his wife and tells her his truth. In my opinion, Barbecue was a very poor choice of play to celebrate ‘40 years of entertaining the people of Nhulunbuy’. Why not choose a play that fits into the category of ‘good wholesome family fun’? I wish I had donated my $120 to Caritas Australia (the international aid and development organisation of the Catholic Church in Aust), to help alleviate hunger in Africa, or provide education to willing students overseas. I did not see any warning that it is an
‘Adults Only’ show, or that people may find it offensive. I have been informed since, that ‘This play was advertised with a disclaimer contains language 15+ recommended’. However, I did not see any disclaimer in either the article or the advertisement in the Arafura Times, (May 23-29), nor on the tickets, nor on the program. I went along to support local people, and to enjoy a comedy, to be entertained. Not to be insulted by the anti-religion and the crudity of gestures and language. What really disturbs me is the ‘knocking’ of religion and fixation on sex. Gove Arts Theatre please bring back ‘good clean family fun’ entertainment. Maggie Travers (pictured), Nhulunbuy.

Drug detector dogs clean up in Gove
Rollover sparks wasted search POLICE and Emergency services were deployed on Monday morning last week following the rollover of a vehicle. The driver appeared to be missing and the Police, NTES and Ambulance were at the location near the Giddes turn off on Central Arnhem Road and all enquires failed to locate the driver. The accident happened at 5am when a 25-year-old male, who had been camping with mates, decided to drive home early. He had borrowed his father’s vehicle and lost control. The man then left the vehicle and walked back to camp and stayed there until about midday.
ABOVE: The north and south SAID units in East Arnhem on a previous visit. RIGHT: Archie the Drug Detection Dog.
He returned to the crash site after having had a few drinks with his mates. Officer-in-charge of Nhulunbuy Police Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said he was not impressed by the man’s actions. “Volunteers were called in and extra personnel were recalled to duty on a public holiday to conduct the search,” he said. “These volunteers gave up their time because of the man’s irresponsibility. “We were concerned he had been injured and wandered off into the bush. “In the end we are happy that he was safe and well.”
From the Fresh Food People Archie with his handler Senior Constable 1st class Peter Henwood came to Gove last week. POLICE drug detection dogs have been busy in Gove over the last couple of weeks. They featured in the Channel 7 show Border Security last week which showed them locating a man bringing in 20kg of kava into the airport late last year. The dogs featured in the program were Archie and Leo. Over the last two weeks Nugget and Archie have been performing their duties in Nhulunbuy and the surrounding district. The visits are random and the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk (SAID) which has been operational since 2009 travels wherever they are needed to stem the flow of illicit drugs into the Territory. Detective Acting Sergeant Ken Bradshaw said since the inception of the department they have seized about four tonnes of kava. “We travel to many of the communities where kava and other drugs are an ongoing problem,” he said. “Kava is usually brought into the area by Pacific Islanders and the money made from the illegal sales then goes out of the area. “There is not sufficient research into the health effects of kava, however there is a significant economic effect on the communities.” He said SAID focused on detecting illicit alcohol, kava, drugs and petrol sales. “At one stage kava was being sent to Gove by mail in five kg bags and in one month 140kg was intercepted.” Archie was the first DDD trained to detect kava along with other drugs. His handler, Senior Constable 1st class Peter Henwood, said he went to Canberra in 2008 for training and was teamed up with Archie. “The biggest quantity he detected was in Darwin when he located 15kg of cannabis with an estimated street value of $450,000,” Snr Const. Henwood said. “For him it’s a big game and he never knows how much he is finding.” SAID turns up unannounced and does spot checks on passengers and freight coming into Gove and also in outlying communities. On June 8 Police issued infringement notices to a 39-year-old woman who was detected with cannabis on a MAF flight and a 21-year-old woman who was detected with cannabis on the flight from Darwin. On June 9 a business premises was searched under the Kava Management Act and two kg of kava was seized along with $3200 in cash. A 24-year-old man arriving at the airport was found to have a small quantity of cannabis in his possession. Four kilograms of kava was located at Wallaby Beach. They also located a number of items in the air freight during their time in Gove. This is on top of the 50kg that was reported in the Arafura Times last week. The two men aged 54 and 32, appeared in Nhulunbuy Magistrate’s Court on Friday, June 8, and were remanded in custody for a further court appearance in Darwin.

The late Dr Marika provided this explanation: “In Yolngu culture it is a courtesy to the deceased and the deceased persons family not to go onto their country. Some Yolngu are not allowed to go there at all until the land has been through a process of fire and ritual purification. Brothers and sisters and close relatives cannot go there nor can they eat anything caught or harvested from that area. The land represents the person who has passed away. In a sense the person is the place. Yolngu also have totems being plants and animals to which the person is related through their ancestors. The totems belonging to a person who has passed away are also forbidden to some Yolngu such as the mother’s brothers and sisters and the father’s brothers and sisters (gurrutu eg wawa ga yapa). Dhimurru would once again like to thank the public of Nhulunbuy for their understanding and respect in regards to this country and apologise for any inconvenience. Please do not hesitate to call into our office or phone the Permits Officer on 8939 2700, if you have any questions regarding access to Dhimurru’s Designated Recreation Areas.

By LYNDA McCAFFERY A CHARLES Darwin University staff member and Indigenous mother of two thinks she was the “proudest student everâ€? to don a gown and mortar board and receive her under-graduate degree at the University’s mid-year graduation ceremony. Yvette Carolin (right) was the ďŹ rst in her family to start undergraduate studies and she now holds a CDU Bachelor of Commerce, having also picked up four scholarships to help her along the way. After completing her secondary education in Darwin Ms Carolin got a traineeship in another city. “I went to Canberra and started with the Federal Government in the Social Security department, (now Centrelink) and part of my training was to write a departmental newsletter we called Jumbana. I think it is still going,â€? she said. When she transferred back to the NT she was placed in the Nhulunbuy ofďŹ ce. She worked in the housing and enterprises section, which she said allowed her to help community people with their stores, market gardens and sewing centres. “It’s where I learned a lot about my culture,â€? she said. From there, Ms Carolin returned to Darwin and undertook a Field Office CertiďŹ cate in Aboriginal Services at the then Darwin Institute of Technology. “It was awesome and that is what got me to continue on my study pathway,â€? she said. “I feel really proud as an Indigenous person who grew up in Darwin, to have graduated from our own university in the Northern Territory. “That’s a significant thing. To show that the Territory has a good education system.â€? Ms Carolin is Yanyuwa on her father’s side and Jawoyn and Torres Strait islander on her mother’s side and a passionate advo-

She works within the OfďŹ ce of the pro vice-chancellor for Indigenous leadership at CDU and wants to help Indigenous people living in remote communities to develop an economic base. “I hope to contribute to research and development around economic frameworks that have a social and cultural imperative, to balance the capitalism,â€? she said. “(My) people want to keep their culture and they need an income in order to do that.â€? Ms Carolin said CDU has the framework, structures and support systems to assist Indigenous students in their learning journeys. “As a person growing up in Darwin, CDU is like an extended family, set up to help us. It’s advantageous for local people to study at CDU, Indigenous or not,â€? she said. With Ms Carolin’s Bachelor degree in hand, she is about to embark on postgraduate studies, but also hopes to provide other Indigenous students with the academic cultural mentoring she received. “I’m really looking forward to having a long relationship with the University. I’m not sure in what capacity, but I really want to continue with Charles Darwin University,â€? Ms Carolin said.

IN the Arafura Times of May 23-29 the current member for Nhulunbuy Ms Walker, in the context of school NAPLAN tests, commented “there’s no doubt that these tests are important tools to assess how students are progressing...” Can this be true when Professor Hammond-Darling in The Australian newspaper (03/05/11) says Australia’s NAPLAN tests are not “intellectually ambitious” but “bubble” and provided only limited information about students’ capabilities”. In contrast the professor says: “Tests that make you think and display knowledge in ways which are more rigorous are much better preparation for college and life
and careers.” Furthermore, Finland which is consistently measured as having the top system of education amongst wealthy countries doesn’t engage such testing and certainly does not put teachers and school to shame with My Schools type ranking. Instead the system in Finland promotes a high standard of teacher training and subsequent trust in their teachers abilities. Personally, I believe greater community level control, more appropriate educational philosophies and improved teacher training are all better answers to the Territories educational needs than NAPLAN testing. On another note, in the
Arafura Times of the same date, CLP candidate for Nhulunbuy Mr Fanning says: “We are committed to tackling the law and order issues including taking steps to stamp out fridging, which is a direct consequence of the Government’s alchohol laws.” I’d like to know what the CLP can do that the police are not doing. Also can Mr Fanning provide us with some clarification on how the so called “Government’s alchohol laws” are responsible for “fridging?” Finally, Mr Fanning’s says that the CLP “are opposed to licensing and permits for recreational anglers.” Does this mean that if the CLP
is elected to government that they will pay Traditional Owners in all the North-East Arnhem area for public access to tidal zones? If so what services will be cut to make this possible? Or will a CLP government be seeking something for nothing? All the best, Kendall Trudgen (pictured), Independent Candidate for Nhulunbuy.
Strong voice needed in Nhulunbuy DAVE Tollner MLA and Country Liberals bush seats co-ordinator travelled to Nhulunbuy to see firsthand the issues I have raised with the party. Dave shared my concerns that lower commodity prices, higher living costs and the new carbon tax will all affect the quality of life for workers and families in Nhulunbuy. The Country Liberals are at the forefront of the campaign against the carbon tax, but the Henderson Labor Government supports the tax, even ignoring the Northern Territory Parliament’s push for a 50 year moratorium on the introduction of the tax in the Territory. And it’s not just the carbon tax that threatens our great lifestyle. Last week I met with Peter Cox, Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club Project Officer, to discuss what needs to be done to complete the wharf precinct/ public boat ramp - which is used by various Government bodies and the majority of boat owners of Nhulunbuy. This facility is a credit to the club and their work to maintain and improve facilities for our community is way above any other

fishing club in Australia. My job as the Country Liberals candidate is to shame the current Labor Government into honouring its promises to the club, which pays for all maintenance and up-keep costs. Labor committed to footing the public liability and up-keep bills, but no invoices have so far been paid to date. The Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club has managed the $1.5million project to date with $100,000 from the Federal Government, $384,000 from the Territory Government and $750,000 from local businesses in the form of donations, in kind and engineering support. The NRSFC itself has raised and contributed over $190k for construction and ongoing maintenance works. The community is in desperate need for an all tide, all weather facility and it is a real concern that the Territory Government has failed to help finalise its completion. Only 10 per cent of recreational boat owners are club members, but the NRSFC continues to maintain and improve this facility for all boat owners as well as operators from Territory and Federal Govern-
CHARLES Darwin University has once again featured prominently in a list of the world’s leading universities. CDU came in at 48th on the Times Higher Education’s “100 Under 50” list of the world’s best
ment. Labour has treated the seat of Nhulunbuy with contempt despite the high levels of payroll tax and GST we pump into Government coffers. This election is about ‘You’ - and to bring real change we need a strong voice in Nhulunbuy to stand up for our people and our community. On another matter, the Gove Touch Association had their Grand Finals on Friday with good sportsmanship a feature of the day’s play. The Ladies game between OMG and All-Stars was of a high standard and I would like to congratulate the winners All-Stars with Deltareef taking out the mens in a closer game than what the scorce suggest. I look forward to the Dave Langridge Memorial Day on July 14. The long weekend saw a number of Gove sports people travelling to all parts of the territory to participate in tennis, shooting and Finke. The Gove Country Golf Club held their annual tournament, which attracted visitors from all over Australia as well as one player from overseas.

This is great for our region and a credit to organisers. Well Done Liz Pickett who won the weekend beating the field of 90, also the number of juniors playing was pleasing to see with Katelyn Rika coming fifth in the Ladies comp. even though she is only 10 years old. Hopefully some visitors will bring family and friends back to our region. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all volunteers who put back into our community as events would not occur without you and I’m sure there will be no shortage of help for our 40th anniversary celebrations. “This speaks as much about our future potential as it does about current excellence and it reflects positively on the variety and quality of the cutting-edge research programs taking place under our banner,” he said.

Aust./U.S.-trained Indon. forces stand accused of leader’s killing SENIOR Papuan leaders have accused Australian and U.S.-trained Detachment 88 of being behind the execution of West Papua National Committee (KNPB) leader Mako Tabuni, Domi Surabut, a senior Papuan Tribal Council leader from the Central Highlands told West Papua Media: “Mako Musa Tabuni was shot dead by Densus 88 with three bullets. Twice in the thigh and once in the stomach. “His corpse is still being held at the Bhayangkara Police Hospital. His death will cause blood to flow. Please pray and urge peaceful intervention in Papua. West Papua Media reports the Indonesian police were refusing to release his body to Tabuni’s family saying that they will bury him themselves. As outrage builds church, tribal and independence leaders from the non-violent movement are urging their followers to maintain discipline fearing that a violent reaction will give the TNI and Indonesian police all the justification they need to crush the independence movement. In a text circulating around activist circles Selphius Bobii, a political prisoner, writes: “The killing of Tabuni is part of a scenario to destroy the Papuan struggle’s commitment to a peaceful path and push Papuans towards violence. “So let’s control ourselves. Don’t get caught in this scenario which will only weaken our peaceful struggle that right now is echoing across our country and up to the UN. The killing of the KNPB leader comes just days after

NHULUNBUY High School’s long anticipated swimming carnival was a great success on June 6. Waking to a fine sunny day, students from Year7-12 braved the chilly morning to plunge into a frantic round of activities competing for house points. The day started with a triathlon setting a new tradition. The winning team from Roper (swim-Harry Walker, bike-Kaleb Hedges and run-Ben Saukuru) set the pace for the rest of the day. After a cork scramble and wade relay, some serious swimming took place with 50m freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and an open butterfly race. More fun was had with house teams competing in the clothes change relay, board relay, and the train relay- always highly entertaining. The teaching staff were very competitive this year with some heroic efforts although they succumbed to the pressure in the relay challenge with year 12. To cap it off the astronomy club brought two telescopes to the pool so students could observe the transit of Venus across the Sun. A memorable day all round. Thanks to all NHS staff and students, with special thanks to the PE staff and Ms Marsh, the pool managers and Nhulunbuy Corporation for another very successful swimming carnival. Go Latram. Romance. A misunderstanding could create problems later in the day. Be careful with your words and make sure that you don’t rely on a message which may be inaccurate.

MUDDY RIVER
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) This is not the best time to get into a dispute. Try to stay away from areas which you know might cause an argument. Your skills as a peacemaker will be needed this week. Romance. This would be a good day to take stock of how things have gone over the past few weeks. Try to look objectively and don’t be blinded by your emotions.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) Advice from a colleague may not be welcome. They do not know as much about the subject as you do but may be trying to make themselves look better. Romance. You may be expecting a little too much from your partner. You may need to be more realistic, at least for the time being. A small, caring gesture will be reciprocated.
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)
QUOTE OF THE DAY

Courage is grace under pressure.

SOLUTIONS No. 103
You may be a little impractical this week. Don’t spend too much time trying to do something which is unlikely to succeed. Keep your attention focused on your main task. Romance. The Moon/Pluto Midpoint moving through your sign will make your emotions much more powerful than they have been for some time.
PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) Someone that you met recently through a local social club could become a close friend. You have a lot in common with this person than it will appear at first. Romance. You will need to be ruthlessly honest this week. Although someone may be hurt initially, your friends will see you in a much more positive light if you tell them the whole story.

Volleyball finals decided Some men By FRED ROWE ANOTHER season of volleyball has come to a close. Thank you to all teams for your help throughout the year with umpiring, scoring, setting up and pulling down of the nets. Also to those that did more than one duty on the night to help out. It was greatly appreciated. The finals were a great success. It was the first for us to have all finals, barbecue, presentation and drinks at the High School. I think it was a great atmosphere and hope that next season will be the same if not bigger. Those that helped behind the scenes to set everything were up: Lyn Mitchell, Nathan Singh, Lara Broeckel, Tom Gasiorowski, Elvio Casteneira, Davin Blundell, Geoff Howell, Mark Keogh, Mackie and my wife, Tash, for doing all the last-minute running around while I was at work. Thank You - without these people helping out the night wouldn’t have gone as smoothly as it did. RESULTS C Grade Final: Billwhacked d Caustic Jocks: 3 set to 0; 25 - 15; 25 - 21; 25 - 15. worse off than others SOME groups of Aussie men worse off than others when it comes to health. A report into the health of Australian men has found the life expectancy of Indigenous males is 11.5 years shorter than non-Indigenous counterparts. Factors that contribute to this poorer health status include higher rates of chronic diseases (such as lung cancer, diabetes and kidney disease) and health conditions that are uncommon in the general population (such as scabies, trachoma and acute rheumatic fever). The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report found certain groups of Australian males are at higher risk of poor health than other males. The report examines the health of Australian men in different population groups, characterised by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status, remoteness, socio-economic disadvantage, region of birth and age. It also found males in remote areas also generally have shorter life expectancy and poorer self-assessed health status. As remoteness increases, so too do several health-related factors, including rates of obesity, tobacco smoking and risky alcohol consumption. Males in remote areas also have more new cases of lung cancer, hospitalisations for Type 2 diabetes, and deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and suicide. Rates of obesity and tobacco smoking among men also increase with socio-economic disadvantage, as do new cases of lung cancer, hospitalisations for Type 2 diabetes and deaths from coronary heart disease, lung cancer, coronary obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and suicide. In contrast, the report shows that some population groups enjoy better health in some areas. Males born overseas have fewer risk factors and lower overall mortality and hospitalisations compared with males born in Australia, and older males (aged 65 and over) are living longer than ever before, and have fewer risk factors such as overweight/ obesity and tobacco smoking than younger males.
NEWS
Plumes of smoke from fires in Australia’s Northern Territory blow towards the north-west. Most of the fires are burning near the coast, and there are two main clusters: to the east, in Arnhem Land, near the Gulf of Carpentaria, and to the west, near the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf. Such blazes are typical in the region at this time of year, as the dry season runs from May to October. This image was taken on June 11. Photo courtesy of eosnap.com

LOCAL tennis club coach Nicky Mayer was recently invited to attend a two-day workshop at Tennis Australia to be a part of a new program being released in October. A selected few from around Australia were invited to put their ideas together to extend the MLC Hot Shots program. Included in the room was NAB coordinator of the Auskick program, MLC Representatives, and a mixture of coaches, club/centre managers, club presidents and community tennis officers from only a few states. “I felt very privileged to be invited to be a part of the team. I was the only representative from the NT,” said Mrs Mayer. “It is not something that happens every day. “As we had won two national categories at the Newcombe Medal Australian Tennis Awards, they considered that we have a great club and wanted to tap into what we do well. “I found it interesting to listen to other coaches who were also club presidents, who have a completely different spin on things, but it was not long before I realised that there is a conflict of interest for some of the people in the room. And I guess narrow mindedness of not looking at a sustainable future for their club was obvious. “That was not what we were there for so I moved on with the agenda. “The two days was about getting more people to play tennis and how we can make it a non-threatening environment and a great place to interact with your kids. “I think a lot of people struggle with the concept of playing tennis, or having a hit, because there is some skill required, but you know what, if you are not out there having a go, it’s never going to happen. “We don’t have to be good to have fun with our kids. “The idea is to provide something that volunteers can deliver or it can be coach/centre manager driven. Providing a great environment for parents and kids to play together with no focus on coaching. Parents getting out and having fun with their kids. “How can this not fail?” The program will be piloted among some 150 clubs in its initial launch in Ocotber this year. Then Tennis Australia will review it and go national with the concept being promoted at the Australian Open. Tennis is for everyone and anyone of any age and any ability. It is a game for Life. At Tennis Gove the club provides the following: Cardio Tennis - Monday and Thursday nights at 7.30pm; Social comp. - Tuesday nights at 7.30pm; Junior coaching - Monday to Thursday,

YIRRKALA has been named the 2012 Deadly Fun Run Champion community following the inaugural Deadly Fun Run Championships held in Uluru this month. Runners from five Indigenous communities crossed the finish line on Saturday morning with runners from the National Indigenous Training Academy also taking part. The Deadly Fun Run Series, new initiative of Rob De Castella’s Indigenous Marathon Project, aims to promote healthy living and increase participation in running in remote Indigenous communities. De Castella is hopeful that the event will grow to become a major event on the running calendar with participation increasing annually. “The enthusiasm shown by every athlete who ran on the weekend was incredible and if they can take that enthusiasm home and help it grow then we are going to end up with something really amazing,”
The 2012 Deadly Fun Run team. he said. “Communities are already planning their next series of fun runs and I have no doubt that the level of community participation is going to get bigger and bigger.” A number of outstanding performances were recorded over the three and five kilometre course with Yirrkala taking out the overall community championship closely followed by Yarrabah in Queensland
