2012 Debutante Ball - A Night to Remember

Local voices heard on fishing BY MARJO HALLOWELL

WHEN the Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club (NRSFC) first heard about the proposed Wessell Commonwealth Marine Reserve they busily worked to secure fishing off the Gove Peninsula. Members were urged to make submissions and the results of the proposed reserves around the Australian Coastline announced last week indicate their submissions were taken on board. Of the 25,000 submissions (many duplicated) over 100 were acted upon and three of those were the three submitted by the NRSFC and its members.

Last September, concerns were expressed that the area was too close to the current fishing grounds and the club made submissions for an alternative proposal. The NRSFC was not opposed to the Marine Park, but was concerned about its proximity to the local fishing areas. The Marine Protection Areas is a three-phase consultation process with this being phase one. The next phase will see the proposals going to the Minister for confirmation and endorsement with the Australian Government and the third phase will see the areas recognised by the Government. The NRSFC’s amendments to the

draft proposal for the Northern Territory were: * To extend the no trawling zone beyond Cape Arnhem; * To push the Green Zone further north and east; and * To increase the size of the Green Zone. Club member Peter Cox said they had asked for a much larger area for the Green Zone, but it was apparent there were pressures from commercial interests. “Being pro-active is to ensure the future of fishing for our children and grand-children,” said Mr Cox. “If we don’t look after it now it won’t

be there for them.” The efforts of the Amateur Fisherman’s Association Northern Territory (AFANT), Northern Territory Game Fishing Association and Game Fishing Association Australia have worked together for the best outcomes for all. “It is essential to join a club or Association so that your voice can be heard on the floor of parliament,” Mr Cox said. Of the boat owners in Nhulunbuy, only 10 per cent are members of the NRSFC and Mr Cox said the more people who join the club the louder their voice would be in issues such as this.

“The response to the first stage of the process was very good, but a lot more still needs to be done. “It is vital as we enter stage two for people to say exactly what they want. There will be a 60-day consultation on stage two and the club will announce when this period starts. We need to keep persevering through all three stages and the more members we have the stronger our voice,” Mr Cox said. The Club, which celebrates 35 years this year, has a track record of sustainable fishing and is the second largest fishing club outside Darwin with a large billfishing potential.

buy Corporation, who usually hosts the fireworks, will not be doing so this year. They will be hosting a fireworks display in conjunction with the Gove Peninsula festival later in the month. Fireworks will be available at the Captain Cook Community Centre, the Uniting Church function room (Nhulunbuy Scout Group) and IGA on Sunday. The general manager of East Arnhem trading Company Tim Broadbent said: “I have heaps (of fireworks) coming from Fusion fireworks. “We have licenses to sell at Yirrkala, Baniyala and here and we will be open from 9am-9pm unless sold out,” he said. “I think we will have plenty to cover everyone’s needs and there is a good range available. “We are running a tracker cracker promotion as well with Gove FM. Basically there will be three mock-up crackers hidden around town. “Clues to the whereabouts will be given to listeners. Whoever finds the crackers will win a $150 bag for free. “IGA Mitre 10 will hold a free sausage sizzle for the day. “ RSPCA Nhulunbuy president Sarah Howland would like to remind all pet owners that Territory Day is not as

exciting for pets as it is for fun loving Territorians. “Please Nhulunbuy, let’s not have the same terrifying situation those two dear little dogs found themselves in last year when they ran trying to escape the sound of fireworks only to be hit and killed by a car,” she said. “They had run almost to the refinery in their terrified state. It was one of RSPCA’s saddest hours when we were called to pick up those two little souls and we urge you to please ensure you pets are safe and secure.

“If you are going out and believe that your pet could escape their normal confines please put them inside or put them in a cage. “Those of you who stay at home with your bug eyed and hyperventilating furry family reassure them you are there however do not ‘over love’ them as it is only cementing the fact that there is something to fear. “RSPCA Nhulunbuy wishes everyone a wonderful Territory day and hopes that commonsense will prevail and cracker night will be a one-night affair.”

Eleven-year-old Chloe Baxter, a year six student, and NTMusic teacher Tim Webb attended the camp. Chloe had been learning songs with the concert band from Monday to Wednesday ready for the Thursday concerts. for these young people,” Mr Mison said. Many students have travelled to Darwin for music events in the past and Tennant Creek is ideally set up for an event like this with the community offering great facilities at the Tennant Creek High School, community hall and showgrounds. “The people of Tennant Creek are highly supportive of the performing arts - they love their music and they love their productions and it is a relatively central location,” Mr Mison said. The camp culminated in a free public performance showcasing what the students had learnt as well as a matinee performance at the primary school. Mr Webb was one of 13 DET music teachers with professional backgrounds working with the students to share a wealth of expertise across a range of instruments and vocals.

We write to extend our sincere apologies to the traditional owners of Wanuwuy (Cape Arnhem) and to Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation who manage the area on the Traditional Owners behalf. Over the Queen’s Birthday holiday long weekend June 8-11, 2012, we started a number of pandanus fires in the dunes around the camping areas, two of which got out of control and spread. We did not realise the full implications of our actions but we now realise that when we lit the fires we showed no respect to the Traditional Owners or to the safety of other campers in the area. We have also impacted on this fragile ecosystem by burning vegetative cover. In allowing Ngapaki access to Wanuwuy, Traditional Owners expect people to observe and respect their traditions and the importance of their area. We have upset and offended Traditional Owners by our actions and sincerely hope we have not threatened future access to the area for other locals of Nhulunbuy and other visitors. We have been informed that our actions in lighting these fires were all the more offensive at this time. We have been told that fire is used to cleanse country during sorry business after someone has passed away. Currently Traditional Owners and the community are grieving the loss of a senior Traditional Owner of Wanuwuy and our actions have impacted on this process. We thank the Traditional Owners and Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation for being reasonable in resolving this situation and apologise for our foolish and ignorant behaviour. We are sincerely sorry for our actions. Signed: Paul Dalton and David Heine 4 – Arafura Times

POLICE BEAT

Another major kava haul in Gove A 35-year-old woman, who was found to be in the possession of more than $50,000 worth of kava, has been charged by Nhulunbuy Police. Police seized approximately 52kg of kava secreted in five suitcases at the Nhulunbuy airport last Monday night (June 18) and will allege the woman transported the kava from Queensland to the Northern Territory with the intention of selling it in nearby communities.

Operation Rheingold seizes $80,000 in drugs DETECTIVES from the Northern Substance On The Abuse Intelligence Desk Beat concluded an operation this week, disbanding a with drug syndicate responsible for sending drugs into NT Arnhem Land. Superintendent Gavin Police Kennedy said Operation Rheingold was initiated to detect and disrupt the flow of illicit drugs and kava entering Nhulunbuy. “During the two week operation, members from the Northern Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk, Dog Operations Unit and Northern Investigations Section conducted searches of freight, mail and 28 flights entering Nhulunbuy,” said Superintendent Kennedy. The operation resulted in 13 arrests, four cautions and three people summonsed for a range of offences. A further four people were issued with Drug Infringement Notices. A total of 60.2 kilograms of kava and 202.4 grams on cannabis was also seized throughout the operation. “This has been a targeted operation that has led to a number of seizures and a comprehensive amount of intelligence gathered around the transportation and supply of drugs into Nhulunbuy,” said Superintendent Kennedy. “It is alleged that the drugs were being taken into Nhulunbuy for the purpose of selling within the Arnhem Land communities, where the combined sale of the drugs would be in excess of $80,000. “Police will continue to target individuals and groups that seek to profit from the harm that illicit substances cause in our remote communities.”

Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said some of the kava was already divided up into small deal bags ready for sale. “The kava had been distributed across all the bags, some wrapped in plastic bags and some wrapped in clothing. “The woman was arrested and taken to the Nhulunbuy Police Station where she was charged with possess a commercial quantity of kava and supply commercial quantity of kava,” said Snr Sgt Muldoon. The woman was bailed to appear in the Nhulunbuy Magistrates Court on July 3. This seizure comes almost two weeks after Nhulunbuy members seized approximately 50kg of kava hidden in two small suitcases and a backpack at the airport. Two men aged 54 and 32 were charged with supply commercial quantity of kava. RIGHT: Kava, weighing about 50kg and valued at about $50,000 seized at Nhulunbuy Airport on June 18.  letters to the editor IT was disappointing that the Arafura Times practised cheap journalism tactics by placing an inaccurate, out-of-touch waffle next to last week’s review of Gove Arts recent production, Barbecue. The volunteer amateur cast and crew spent many hundreds of hours practising, constructing sets and preparing to at least ‘have a go’ and put on what was a rare opportunity of local entertainment for the residents of Nhulunbuy. The Gove Arts Theatre has run many, many shows ranging

Reaction to criticism from comedy, drama, musical and challenging theatre plays over its 40 years in operation. The author of the letter to the editor should have walked out if she was so disgusted, or had some backbone and approached the cast or committee on the night. The play was billed as adults only and. in fact, a disclaimer on posters at the point of sale resulted in no tickets sold to children. What was the point of the article other than to reflect how narrow minded

the author of this letter would appear to be? The play was about tolerance, accepting someone no matter who they were and not prejudging someone’s character. Pity this lesson was not learnt in this case by the complainant. To reference a section in the play that had the highest level of four-letter language and verbal abuse of a female, as being ‘the part which made her laugh the most’, would appear to be

Teacher offended by ‘lack of tolerance’ Vital road upgrades I WRITE this letter as an educator. facilitated religious education to take will improve access I have taken great offence to Maggie place in my classroom. Travers’ letter to the editor and her comments on Facebook. I am not overly concerned with the fact that Maggie seems to have missed the message contained in the play Barbecue that of tolerance. I am really concerned with the fact that she believes that, unless educators are of the same belief as her, they are not fit to teach. I am an atheist, have been since the realisation that religion was not for me. I didn’t choose to be an atheist lightly. I was exposed to and explored various religions during my youth and was born into a family of Lutherans and Church of England. I made an informed decision to divorce myself from any form of religion. I do, however, respect others beliefs, attend marriages, christenings and funerals in churches and as long as people respect my right to choose not to believe then I will pay them the same regard. I have taught for 26 years. I have never received a complaint due to my religious beliefs. I have never foisted my thoughts on others and, where my employer has required it, have

To suggest that I am an unfit teacher because I don’t believe in God is distasteful, however to suggest that I would, or that any of the teachers involved with Barbecue would unduly influence students with our own belief is the most offensive of all. I take my profession very seriously. I am well aware of the influence I have on children and am honoured that I have had the opportunity to work with children and families who appreciate what I do. I am also privileged to have worked with many fine educators over the years with a huge range of religious beliefs. It is a pity Maggie didn’t enjoy the play and I respect her right to voice her displeasure, however, I do dispute her statements that I am not a ‘pillar of the community’ (mind you, this is something I have never aspired to be) due to the fact I dare to believe something different to her. Yet again religion drives a wedge between people. The views expressed in this letter are my own and do not reflect the opinions of the Gove Arts Theatre committee or members.

contradictory in most people’s opinion after reading her letter, and questions the rationale of her thought process. To be ‘disturbed that several of the cast and crew are educators’ is a cheap shot at some of the talented teachers and staff of our local schools, who, if not already very busy in their profession, still found the time to volunteer and contribute to our community. If you did not realise it ?. . they were acting. Peter Cox Nhulunbuy

WITH the dry season and school holidays upon us and the first vehicles making their way out on the Central Arnhem Road through to the Stuart Highway, it’s encouraging to see at last that civil works for a new crossing over the Goyder is listed as a ‘Future Electoral News Tender Opportunity’ on the by NT Member for Nhulunbuy LYNNE WALKER Department of Business and Employment’s website. The Australian Government committed to $15 million in 2008 to upgrade three crossings on the Central Arnhem. The Mainorou crossing, 50km south of Bulman, has been completed and the Goyder will be next followed by Donydji Creek. Being on Aboriginal Land Trust requires extensive negotiation with traditional owners, the Northern Land Council and the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority to gain the necessary approval before any works can proceed. With clearances and approvals given to allow submersible bridges to be built at the Goyder River, the next step has been to scope the engineering works in readiness for tender. What the works will also entail is a realignment of around 14km of road given that the new crossing is several kilometres downstream from the current location. When finally completed, we can expect to see this vital transport corridor open for as long as 10 months in the year as opposed to the current six. TRANSPORT and freight costs are often raised with me as matters of concern to people and rightly so. I met last week (not for the first time) with a sea freight operator in Darwin who is very keen to bring services into Nhulunbuy. Having more than one operator is vital in driving competitive pricing and those of us who have lived here for some time will recall the honeymoon period when we enjoyed Gulf Freight Services in the market place before they were bought out by their competitor. ON the subject of boat ramps in last week’s paper I note two significant omissions in a Letter to the Editor. The first is that $250,000 of taxpayer money has gone into the boat ramp at Gove Boat Club and the second is that the boat ramp adjacent to Toll Marine, which NTG has put some $385,000 into, is not under any lease arrangement with Toll who are the leaseholders. Security of tenure is an imperative to see continued investment of taxpayer dollars. That said, I continue to lobby my ministerial colleagues to contribute to the upkeep and insurance costs of the ramp that is utilised by many parties.

Pool given a makeover AS little discruption to the swimming program at the swimming pool was the result of much planning . The pool reopened after just two weeks of closure which saw some major work carried out. Tiles were replaced and the pool thoroughly cleaned. Gove Aquatic Centre manager Rachel Verdel said putty on the expansion joints was also replaced. “If I was a kid, I’d probably be pulling at it as well because it feels good,” she said. “All the sand was sucked out of the filters and this process alone took two days.” Mrs Verdel said she was not sure but believed this

to probably be the first time all the sand had been removed and replaced. “The sand we used ensures the great water quality we have here,” she said. “It is a special sand mined in South Australia. “Previously the sand had been taken out and sieved and then replaced. This time it is being replaced with new sand.” She commended the maintenance crew of the Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited. “They made sure there would be as little disruption as possible,” she said. “There were people training for a half iron man event and Keith Weymes from the NCL made sure they could complete their training and also that the High School swimming carnival would go ahead as planned. “The carnival finished at 2pm on Wednesday and by 2.30pm we pulled the plug and the pool was empty by 6pm. All the sand was on hand and work started straight away. It took the sucker truck two days to get all the sand out .” “Keith and his team did an amazing job. They also checked out to see what improvements could be made around the pool in future” The pool reopened last week ready in time for the school holidays and the Territory Day celebrations on Sunday.

Liz moves on after 14 years IT IS with mixed emotions that Liz Stephenson and her family are moving on after spending 14 years in Gove. Ms Stephenson who has worked at the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in Nhulunbuy is moving to Darwin to work in the Tuberculosis unit. Over the years in Gove she has seen the outbreak of Swine Flu (2009) and smaller outbreaks of infectious diseases, “It is a field that has interested me since my student days,” she said. “TB and leprosy have been a particular interest since my early nursing days 22 years ago. “I was encouraged to do a rotation at the Fairfield Infectious Diseases hospital in Melbourne and it opened my eyes and was extremely interesting. Now I can focus on TB.” After qualifying as a nurse Liz spent some time in Nepal where she set up a massage centre which funded a medical clinic she set up. This was in Pokhra and she spent six months there in the early 90s. From there she moved to Thailand where she met her partner, Koon.

It has been a juggling process as there is no permanent studio for the Association so we have had to utilise whatever space is available. “There are 200 students over a variety of dance disciplines and the Association is growing every year.” Liz was first at Maningrida before coming to Gove . “I am lucky because the job I am moving to will see me coming back to Gove in a support role. “I have made too many friends here not to come back whenever I can.” Joy Pascall will come from Gapuwijak to take on the role at the CDC in Nhulunbuy.

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) At times, you may wish that your partner could be a little more flexible. Don’t push them too hard, however! Be patient and they will come around in time. Romance. A surprise visit may help to draw you out of your shell and give you a new energy for life. Be prepared for a pleasant surprise!

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) Home life may be a little tedious at the moment: you probably feel that you need a break. However, a pleasant surprise this week will be worth waiting for. Romance. Don’t worry if you have not felt at the top of your game recently. A romantic gesture from a person that you respect will help to boost your confidence.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

FOR KIDS

You have been unexpectedly successful, but don’t let the recent attention you have been receiving go to your head! It may not be anything you had any control over. Romance. You should be feeling very close to your partner at the moment. Make sure to share a special moment together this week. A helping hand will not go unnoticed.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd)

Recent changes in your social life will ultimately be for the best, but it may be a while before you can see their positive side. Change is never easy but this will benefit you in long-reaching ways. Romance. Take the first opportunity you can to go out and enjoy yourself. You badly need a chance to relax, unwind and get your mind off things.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd)

Hard times come to everyone eventually. Some money which you have put aside for a rainy day may have to be used. Don’t be too much of a martyr! Romance. Your intellectual powers will be in good form today. You will be able to express your ideas clearly and logically to other people. Someone you respect may take notice.

Provided you feel secure enough, you will be in a very romantic mood. Don’t let fear paralyse you: enjoy yourself!

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) You recently borrowed something from a friend, and have forgotten to give it back. Your friend may need this sooner than you think. Try to return it as soon as possible. Romance. A dream about an exotic trip which you once made will cheer you up. Try to remember all the details of the dream. Start to think about how you can recapture that feeling again.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)

MUDDY RIVER

This will be a great day for you - provided you don’t get into any long discussions. People will try to trap you in your words. Avoid contentious issues if at all possible. Romance. This is not the best time for joint activities. You will enjoy being with your partner, but will need to make your own decisions and to spend some time by yourself.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) Your partner may seem to be a little too interested in someone that they have recently met. Don’t get too suspicious: things are more innocent than they appear. Romance. Try to get advice from a trusted source on your relationship. You need to see this situation from a different perspective.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th)

Recent events may have taken their toll. You need the chance to unwind, and should not feel guilty about taking it easy for a while. Now may be the ideal time for a holiday “away from it all.” Romance. Do something special to help your partner this week. They have been very considerate recently.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Education is when you read the fine print. Experience is what you get if you don’t.

The Moon/Mars Midpoint now in your sign will give you a burst of energy, just when you need it. You will need it to complete a project which is very important to you. Romance. You will be a little under the weather at the moment, and will not be in the mood for going out. Use this time to reflect on recent events.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) A word of advice will help you, so long as you are prepared to follow it to the letter. Don’t be afraid to trust to your friend’s judgement. Romance. Someone that you have been fantasising about recently will be much less interesting in real life. Don’t lose sight of what is right in front of you!

Successful Auskick season comes to an end By MELISSA FOGGIN ANOTHER season of Auskick has come to a close and what a season we had. With record numbers of volunteers and a new home on the Nhulunbuy Primary School oval, the season kicked off to a flying start. During the nine weeks we were fortunate enough to have some very special visitors. They included some NT Thunder players who the kids (and many parents) idolised. Thanks to Gove Operations Pacific Aluminium for making their trip to Nhulunbuy possible. We then had Dipper and Shane Crawford take Auskick for us and what a fantastic visit that was, No one wanted to go home and we had record numbers of mums down at the oval to get a glimpse of Shane, who is the new NAB Auskick Ambassador. Each week saw the kids develop their skills, improve their game and most of all have fun. This would not be possible without the assistance of many. I would like to personally thank all the participants - without you kids, Auskick would not exist, and to the parents who bring the kids down, support and encourage them, thank you. To the volunteers and coaches, the kids and I thank you so very, very much, without you there each week to coach them, where

would we be? ABOVE LEFT: Favourite team jumpers were worn by some Auskick players. ABOVE RIGHT: Auskick season ends. I have been fortunate enough to have been BELOW: Bibs remind the youngsters what position they are playing. involved with the Auskick program for three years running and each year the program gets better and better. By the end of this season the improvement in all the kids was amazing and boy do we have some ripper talent out there - boys and girls. To end the season we put on a sausage sizzle, with the fantastic barbecue trailer being supplied by YBE - thank you very much - would love to have one of these for every camping trip. See you next year for Auskick 2013. Enjoy the rest of the AFL season and I look forward to seeing who is going to be in the Grand Final.

year’s National championships. There is also the Club teams event incorporated into the proceedings. Individual members of the team achieved some good results and personal bests during the competition as well. Tom Niven started off well winning the State Skeet Championship with a personal best, 50 out of 50. The next event on the program was the State Skeet Doubles Championship which was won by Ray Niven, giving Arnhem claim to both of the skeet titles. The first event in the Trap compe-

tition was the State Double-BarrelL Championship. Shot over 60 targets, there were 10 shooters who got all of their targets and had to shoot off against each other for placings. Ray Niven missed a target early to drop out of the shoot off which was ultimately won by South Australian shooter Bronte Evans. The next event was the State Single-Barrell Championship that was won by Darwin shooter Pat Coogan. Steve Walker was placed second in AA grade and Phillip Trudgen was placed second in C grade bringing home more medals for Arnhem. Arnhem member Paul Drennan took out first in AA grade in the State Double-Rise championship while Shane Guiney shot a personal best to get himself in a shoot off for second in A grade which he unfortunately lost to place third. Shane was regraded from B grade to A grade during the weekend’s competition and has been rapidly improving since he attended the Na-

tional championships earlier this year where he placed second in C grade in the National Single-Barrell championship. Arnhem Gun Club will once again have members representing the NT at the National championships next year with Ray Niven qualifying for the Skeet team and Paul Drennan and Steve Walker qualifying for the Trap team. The five member Open Trap team that represented the NT at the 2012 National championships contained three Arnhem members being Paul Drennan, Rob Yeo and Ray Niven. The team was placed equal second out of the seven teams. The next major event for most of the club members will be the two day Club championships in August. While this event will only be open to experienced club members anyone who wants to have a look or a go at clay target shooting is most welcome at our normal monthly shoots which are on the second Sunday of each month starting at 10am.
