Two rescued after boat sinks By MARJO HALLOWELL
TWO old school mates were rescued after their boat sank last Wednesday, July 11. Jeff Murray and Jason Reedy, who were out for a fishing trip, were in their tender (dingy) fishing in the mangroves at Ingliss Island when they spotted that their boat was listing at the stern (rear). They immediately returned to the boat and it sank within minutes of their return so they went ashore. The 26ft Blackwatch Flybridge Cruiser was being taken on its first big outing - a three-day extended fishing trip. Mr Murray said the EPIRB was triggered as the vessel sunk at about 4.30pm. “I had the GPS EPIRB unit as recommended by Jeremy Chrzanowski after his incident (last November),” he said. “While leaving the vessel I grabbed the EPIRB and a couple of other essential items, and triggered the EPIRB.” A fixed-wing ‘plane in the area was tasked by emergency services to look for the boat from which the activation occurred, and Mr Murray said it was about an half an hour before they were spotted. The pilot spotted the boat 600 metres from the shore and the two men on the beach. A helicopter from Jayrow Helicopters was dispatched from Gove Airport to pick up the men. They were taken back to the Gove airport where Kelly Murray, who was called out of a meeting to improve safety on the water, was waiting. The vessel was salvaged by Arafura Sea Charters and returned to Gove on Saturday. Mr Murray wanted to extend thanks to those who assisted in the rescue. “Thanks to the ‘chopper pilot and co-pilot who attended the scene and all of the people involved with the co-ordination of the rescue,” he said. Officer-in-charge of Nhulunbuy Police Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said the men had an EPIRB on board and the signal raised the alarm. “The ‘plane flying in the vicinity was able to spot the men on the beach and the helicopter was able to pick them up without much delay,” he said. “This was an excellent example of how having the right equipment on board has saved many hours of searching.” Snr Sgt Muldoon was also at a meeting to help improve boat safety as local groups discussed what could be implemented to assist emergency services to locate boats that were overdue. The next meeting will be at the Walkabout Lodge at 5pm on Wednesday, July 25, for feedback on some of the ideas put forward at the first meeting and possible solutions.

MANAGEMENT and staff at the Gove District Hospital took time out last week to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the official opening. A very low key event, they celebrated with a barbecue and the cutting of a cake on the hospital grounds. Gove District Hospital was opened on July 7, 1972, by Sir

Kenneth Anderson who was the Commonwealth Minister for Health. A news report of the time said the hospital covered 21 acres and consisted of a 64-bed hospital, ancillary buildings and staff quarters. In November, 1971, the hospital was noted as being a 10-bed well equipped hospital with three doctors
and 18 nurses. Some 48 nurses and three senior staff were to be housed in an attractive accommodation block which was not yet open. The first baby to be born at the hospital was Anthony Henry Willebrand who was born on April 23. He weighed 9lb 1oz and his mother, Shirley, was scheduled to fly
to Darwin the following morning. His father, John, was a cargo supervisor with Nabalco. The historical information was obtained from documents from local historian Phil Herdman. Ivor Alexander held a brief quiz to see how much the staff knew about the history of the hospital. More photos Page 10 >>

Encouraging indigenous health workers Laynhapuy administration extended
LOCAL relieving general manager at the Gove District Hospital Lisa Pullen (pictured right) has been chosen as a representative on a national board to encourage indigenous health workers. Lisa Pullen, who is currently relieving Doug Gilchrist, was appointed to the position on the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nursing and Midwifery Advisory Network (NATSINMAN) recently as the Northern Territory representative. NATSINMAN meets bi-annually to discuss recruitment strategies for
encouraging more Indigenous candidates into medicine through nursing or as health workers. “Currently there are about 37 Indigenous nurses registered in the Northern Territory and about 76 health workers. “We are constantly encouraging new applicants into a variety of fields. “These numbers do not include those employed through some of the Aboriginal Corporations and we are in the process of trying to get these figures as well.”
THE Registrar of Indigenous Corporations, Mr Anthony Beven, recently announced an extensions to the terms of the special administrations of the Laynhapuy Homelands Aboriginal Corporation (Laynhapuy). “A great deal of progress has been made with special administrations, and the corporation is in a much-better position now than it was at the outset,” Mr Beven said. “However, there is still some important work to be completed and, therefore, the special administration
has been extended for a short period to ensure the corporation is ready to resume the important services it provides to members and communities.” The special administration at Laynhapuy has been extended for two months and will end on August 31, 2012. The appointment of the special administrator has also been extended. Laynhapuy was placed under special administration for six months on January 23, 2012.
IGA promoting fresh food for the Yirrkala community A MAJOR revamping of the IGA in Yirrkala has seen the store more strongly promote fresh food for the community. Sales manager for the East Arnhem Trading Company Brett Hunter came on board a few months ago to improve the range and marketing of the store. Fresh fruit and vegetables, and fresh foods are now at the front of the store’s layout to highlight the need to use fresh produce. Fridges for juices, bread racks and fruit and vegetables have been relocated to the front of
the store and Mr Hunter said the sales of these products has more than doubled as a result. Extra lines have also been introduced including a seafood range and a larger range of fresh meat rather than frozen. Some 25 new lines were introduced to the range of baby products focusing on healthy living. Mr Hunter said they were taking what the community wanted on board and the effectiveness of this was reflected in the results of the increased fresh food sales. “We also have a new range of linen,

A TOUCH of the classics is coming to Gove as the Darwin Symphony Orchestra (DSO) tune their instruments. They will not only be featuring classic pieces, but they will also be playing a range of favourites and movie themes from James Bond to Star Wars and also a range of popular tunes. The spectacular, open-air concert will be at the Nhulunbuy High School oval on August 11. The sponsors are providing the stage, transporting the instruments and equipment, catering for the orchestra which is being flown in for the day. The 60-strong orchestra are all volunteer musicians who are based in Darwin and come from a wide range of
backgrounds. Leif Sundstrop, the conductor, will be collaborating with local schools and indigenous musicians in the lead up to the event with some guest appearances at the concert. The event is proudly sponsored by Gove Operations Pacific Aluminium, Airnorth, DSO, Sodexo, Giovenco, Toll, Charles Darwin University, and the NT Government. Gates will open at 5pm for a 6pm start and tickets are available through Lynne Walker’s Office, LJ Hooker and Gove Tackle and Outdoors. The cost of the tickets $30, or $15 for a concession and $70 for a family (two adults and three children).
Kids’ winning prize brings children’s author to Gove THIS year is designated the National Year of Reading and various programs, events and fun activities to expand literacy and reading are being highlighted throughout the year. One of the first programs at the beginning of this year was based on the Alison Lester book Are We There Yet? with various activities and events held around Australia and focused on the the artwork or the author of this work. In this book, the story line follows a family’s journey around Australia and the interesting places that they visit, things they see, and experiences that happen to them. Based upon this book as a starting theme, 2012 National Year of Reading held an Australia-wide promotion for children to develop and write their own postcard/s drawings on places that they visit on holidays, or the town that they live in, or things that they do. These artworks were then scanned and entered into the National Year of Reading program website and coordinated into an exhibition on our Nation and State/s (Territory) regions. The aim of this promotional activity was to offer the opportunity for children to develop their own creative artwork and photography and also expand their writing and literacy skills as a part of this creative exercise. Nhulunbuy Community Library Manager Robyn Theedom said, that during the Christmas holidays, in the first week of January, the Nhulunbuy Community Library held special children’s holiday activity based on this Alison Lester book and activity. “We linked with this theme to involve the children in a holiday activity, and to be a part of the National year of Reading campaign for 2012,” Mrs Theedom said. “Children produced some fantastic drawings, postcards and stories of their own travels and experiences for the activity. Entries were then submitted by the Library for those children at the holiday group activity wishing for their creative artwork to be entered in the Are We There Yet? competition.
“Nhulunbuy Community Library was recently advised that this activity at the library, with the work of a number of the children, won first prize for the group entry, 5-7 age category, for the competition in the Northern Territory. “The prize won includes a visit from an Australian children’s author; signed copies of Alison Lester’s Are We There Yet? book, and vouchers. The children of these winning entries are to be presented with the signed books and vouchers by the visiting author when he visits Nhulunbuy.” Garth Nix, the well know Australian children’s author of a wide range of children’s books, including The Old Kingdom Chronicles and The Keys to the Kingdom series, is the author who is now coming to visit Nhulunbuy on Tuesday, July 31, as awarded in this prize. The Library is working at creating an opportunity to involve as many as possible in this special day and 2012 National Year of Reading event. Students are being given the opportunity to attend special presentations given by Garth to learn about creative writing and hear of Garth’s experiences as a writer at sessions run at the schools during the day. As the date of this visit also coincides with this year’s Gove Peninsula Festival, the 2012 National Year of Reading and the Nhulunbuy Community Library is working in partnership to create an event with the Gove Peninsula Festival and Arnhem Writers’ Group, for Garth to attend and meet as many children and adults as possible in the time that he is here. Those interested in meeting with the author, both children and adults, will have this fantastic opportunity at the Cell between 5pm to 7.30pm in the evening on Tuesday, July 31. Winners of this children’s competition will be announced and awarded their prizes by Garth Nix at this event. Garth’s books will also be available for purchase and signing. This will be a great opportunity to meet with and listen to a wonderful author and speaker.

‘Chopper pilot crashes at Borroloola A HELICOPTER pilot had a lucky escape from serious injury when he crash-landed while mustering on a remote property near Borroloola last Monday, July 9. At the request of the health clinic in Borroloola, CareFlight flew the man to hospital in Darwin. The pilot told the CareFlight flight nurse the engine on his R22 helicopter quit during mustering operations on the Tanumbirini Station 230km east of Borroloola on Monday evening and he plunged 30m to the ground. The pilot escaped with back pain and facial cuts. Staff from Borroloola Health Clinic drove to the station to start treating the man. They called on CareFlight which sent an aero medical plane to the McArthur River
airfield overnight and met the clinic team to fly the man to Royal Darwin Hospital for assessment. The man remained in a stable condition on arrival at the hospital. CareFlight director Ian Badham said it was a lucky escape. “Considering that his engine quit when he was about a hundred feet in the air, had a heavy landing, from what he told our flight nurse he had a very lucky escape.” About an hour later, another R22 owned by Heli-Muster crashed at Phillip Creek Station, about 40km north of Tennant Creek. Both pilots escaped without any major injuries. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is waiting for more information on both crashes before it decides whether to launch an official investigation.

THE Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service are calling on the community to assist in preventing bushfires throughout the region. While fire authorities continue to respond to reports and contain bushfires, everyone can assist in preventing bushfires from occurring in the first place. Station Officer Peter Van Boxtel, of Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service, said fires can easily start at this time of year from sparks ignited by the use of tools or riding quad bikes. “The community can assist us by taking extra precautions when using equipment and tools to minimise the risk of sparks occurring. “This should including proper maintenance of quad bikes and safely discarding cigarette butts,” said Mr Van Boxtel. “People should also keep an eye out for any suspicious activity. If you see something, know something, then say something. “Sadly, deliberately lit bushfires continue to occur here in the Territory . “While the fire service works closely with Police to investigate the cause of such fires, we rely on the community as our eyes and ears. “We are calling on the community to report information on bushfire arson to Police on 131 444 or Crime stoppers 1800 333 000. “Information may include: photos and vision of bushfires which contain suspicious individuals; descriptions; times; locations; and the vehicle used by the person acting suspiciously, if any. “Arson is one of the most cowardly yet serious crimes and arsonists have no regard for the consequences of their criminal actions. “Arsonists are responsible for the full extent of the fire including the damage which occurs as a result of the fire. “The NT Bushfires legislation supports this with penalties up to $25,000 and five years imprisonment. “Even illegally lit small grass fires in and around pastoral properties burns the food and habitat of animals and wildlife respectively” Police and Fire and Rescue Service recognise that there are situations in which fires are lit for traditional purposes such as for comfort and cooking. Such fires must be managed with care, supervised at all times, and fully extinguished before being left unattended. Those who light such fires remain responsible for that fire. THE Sea Fox is shown here stranded on the beach at Elcho Island by the great tides of the Arafura Sea in 1959. On board was Hollywood actor-magician John Calvert and also a chimpanzee, the animal star of the Tarzan series. The incident had a tremendous impact on the local Aborigines. This the second time the NT government has extended the deadline for the handout, which applies to new homes up to a value of $600,000. A REVIEW into the financial sustainability of shires has found that while shires are viable there are important issues that need to be addressed to further improve them in the long term. The review also confirmed that existing shire council structures are appropriate in continuing to meet the communities’ service delivery needs Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu was engaged to independently review the financial sustainability of shires in November 2011which included a steering committee comprising of local government sector representatives and senior Northern Territory Government officers. Local Government Minister, Malarndirri McCarthy released the first Review of Councils’ Financial Sustainability report, since the amalgamation of shires in 2008, and said a Taskforce will be set up to review and manage the implementation of the 32 recommendations. “The shires in this report and the Local Government Association of the NT are committed to working with the Territory and Australian Governments to ensure the financial sustainability of our shires into the future,” said Ms McCarthy. “The report identifies issues that need to be addressed to ensure the long term financial sustainability of shires, and specifically changes to their revenue and expenditure functions. “The report also provides recommendations to improve the operations and the legislative and reporting framework applicable to shire councils. “Despite this, the report does not recommend going back to the previous set up of smaller community councils - in fact it argues for further amalgamation. “Our shire councils have achieved a great deal over the last four years and this report provides a better understanding of the individual financial management of each shire to ensure the best possible delivery of grass-root services.” The review by Deloitte was completed in May this year and has resulted in a final report containing:
* Financial analysis of the Councils’ financial information; * Identification of the critical issues including a risk assessment; * Commentary on Council financial sustainability across core and non-core services and fee-for-service operations; * Commentary on the effectiveness of current funding arrangements; and * Commentary on whether the current structure of the Councils is appropriate to meet future service delivery requirements. A copy of the report is now available on the department’s website at www.localgovernment.nt.gov.au/local_government_reviews

letters to the editor / opinion Stay safe on the water WITH more than half the homes in Gove owning a boat and many newcomers not familiar with local conditions, safety on the waters is of paramount concern. Local fishing, boating and community clubs, along with emergency service representatives met at the Walkabout last week to discuss how safety issues can be addressed, especially in regards to knowing where to start searching for missing boats. A representative from the Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club (NRSFC), Peter Cox informed those present of a number of radio channels that are able to be used in the case of an emergency. Channel 16 is the National emergency marine, radio hailing channel. The NRSFC installed a marine radio repeater at the refinery in early 1980’s
to extend coverage of local recreational boating users. This is channel 80 and covers from Yirrkala to Higginson and up to the Bromby Islands. In 2008, the NRSFC installed another marine radio repeater on the Bromby Island that provides coverage from the Wessel Islands back to Nhulunbuy. This second repeater is available on marine radio channel 81. The Bromby Island Repeater was installed at a cost of $65k from funds provided by the Federal Government, Nhulunbuy Rotary and the NRSFC. Maintenance to date has been achieved by funding from the NT Government, Pacific Aluminium and the NRSFC. A further meeting is to be held at the Walkabout Lodge at 5pm on July 25 to review possible ways of ensuring the safety issues raised last week.
Authorities talk big, but don’t act WHILE I’m proud of the fact that visually impaired people can become senior police and magistrates in this country, I think that some of them might need their seeing-eye dogs retrained. Otherwise, how could they fail to spot, highlight and act on the frequent crimes of child abuse, theft, social security fraud, tax fraud, money lender fraud, debit card fraud, speeding, racial hatred and abuse, insurance fraud, tail gating, reckless endangerment of life, talking on mobile phones while driving, conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, dangerous driving, coercion and demanding money with menaces? Authorities talk big in this country, however, unless it’s cheap and easy
pickings for them, they don’t really seem to do that much. Is it blindness, fear or ignorance on the part of the authorities that they can’t see that matters are reaching a crisis point? If I was the magistrate who was to sentence a hypothetical accused regarding an alleged assault on people that behaved as above, I would give the hypothetical accused a pat on the back, $10,000 and the key to the city. Also, if that hypothetical person were to contact me, I would pledge to maintain his anonymity and I’d be happy to make a personal financial contribution to his penalty. David Mitchell Nhulunbuy
An ‘act of justice’ to vote against Labor I WISH to thank the Arafura Times for printing the article Elders Declare Day of Mourning After Legislation Passed (July 4-10), following the passing of the Stronger Futures legislation in the Federal Parliament on June 29. Djiniyini Gondarra, of North-East Arnhem Land, was one of two NT elders to declare a day of mourning following this event. Djiniyini is a leader of high esteem whom I have assisted from time-to-time in his staunch advocacy for Yolngu people. Djiniyini is the spokesperson for the Yolnguw Makarr Dhuni (or Yolngu Nations Assembly) which is a Yolngu government body modernising to represent eight provinces of traditional Yolngu law. The body has spoken out clearly against the Stronger Futures legislation. The unacceptable aspects of this legislation are: 1: It denies the legitimacy of Yolngu systems of law by stopping mainstream courts considering ‘customary law’ in a client’s defence. 2: It allows Yolngu to be arrested on suspicion alone, and grants undue powers to interrogate. 3: It gives power to the Federal government to take direct control of Community Living Areas. These issues are about basic human needs - the need for identity, peace and order, the need for individual freedom from tyranny, and the need for security (in land tenure and cultural development). NT Labor has further denied such needs with their neglect of Homelands, indigenous languages and legalistic approaches to complex social issues (re: domestic violence and child protection laws). This stuff is worth mourning and, in my opinion, it is an act of justice to vote against Labor. I hope to provide a strong alternative. If your readers would like to hear more, they might attend my public meeting from 5.30pm on Tuesday, July 24, at the Uniting Church conference room next door to the East Arnhem shire office. I will give a short explanation of my reasons for standing in the coming NT elections and receive questions. Kendall Trudgen Independent Candidate for Nhulunbuy www.nhulunbuyindependent.com
Central Arnhem Highway continues to be an issue WITH the up-coming election just over a month away, I’ll continue to work hard meeting people in my electorate. This will be the start of a very busy and challenging time. While writing this letter, my wife and I are expecting the birth of our first child. By the time you read this, we should have seen the safe arrival of our baby at the Gove District Hospital. Talking to people during this last week, the Central Arnhem Highway continues to be an issue. We should not have to put up with the condition of this road, especially the first 100km out of Nhulunbuy. If elected on August 25, I will fight for improvements to this road on behalf of the community. You may have seen the witches’ hats on the airport road over recent weeks warning of a hazard to road users. Pacific Aluminum Gove has advised me they will repair these
areas as soon as possible. This shows, if you are willing to report and speak to people, things can be done. I will continue to look into these issues. Labor’s Banned Drinker Register has not stopped problem drunks from getting alcohol. They are able to walk into any pub, bar or restaurant and purchase alcohol or just have their mates purchase it for them. Under the Country Liberals plan, drunks will be taken off the streets. Anyone taken into protective custody more than three times in six months will be given a compulsory court order. These orders could include requiring attendance at a program in order to return to the community, or even a custodial sentence to sober up and get treatment. Alcohol is not the problem, misuse of it is. The Country Liberals was formed
by enterprising individuals and business leaders in order to fight Government intrusion and red tape which dominated the Territory prior to Self-Government. Fast forward to 2012 after Labor’s decade in power, it seems we are being dictated to by Canberra yet again and all Territorians are suffering. A Country Liberals Government will stand up for the Territory against Canberra’s interference. The current Labor Government is still the biggest purchaser of goods and services in the Northern Territory, but local businesses are not getting their share of the action. The tendering process is very time consuming, heavy on duplication and expensive. Labor’s 20 per cent, local-business weighting isn’t working because, by definition, any business with an address in the Northern Territory is considered a Territory business.

There are plenty of experienced businesses in town who are losing contracts to multi-national companies. How are young people supposed to gain apprenticeships, traineeships and experience if work goes to businesses outside the region? It is very disappointing to see the Labor Member for Nhulunbuy not using local business for goods and services. Nhulunbuy needs strong, committed representation. A local member needs to be prepared to get stuck into Government and have a real go. Nhulunbuy needs people who are prepared to speak the facts and make strong decisions where required. Anything less will see our region fall into further decline. It’s time for change - no more Labor for Nhulunbuy. Allen Fanning CLP Candidate for Nhulunbuy

NEWS FAR LEFT: Students working on their cooking skills as part of the RALPA program. LEFT: Woodwork a component of the course.
Helen Summers Optometrist
14 graduate from RALPA program FOURTEEN graduates from four indigenous organisations graduated from the RALPA program last Friday. The RALPA program is an extension of the Gove Operations ALERT readiness program. The Concept of RALPA was the combined initiative of Gove Operations and Traditional Owner groups, and has been instrumental in strengthening the opportunity fro local indigenous people to acquire relevant working skills. Launched in January the second group of graduates has finished their eight-week intensive course. The programs are variable and training has been mapped to employment outcomes.
Women focus on food preparation, handling and presentation, infection control and cross contamination. They undertake a weekly cooking class at the ALERT Facility. However, the women are still completing wood-work projects, small plant and equipment, planning and design as part of their training. They also developed skills to operate a horticultural nursery and community store, incorporating a coffee shop and learnt how to cook wholesome meals. The men have an extended program with wood and metal work outcomes, small plant and equipment, planning and design. The men have already built the coffee shop and
have plans to construct a small abattoir in order to provide meat from the Garrathiya cattle station. Both groups have accredited training outcomes; HSE and manual handling. The graduates from Marngarr Council were: Sharon Gurruwiwi, Erika Schebeck, Jennifer Yunupingu, Elaine Yunupingu, Janelle Yunupingu, Rosina Dhamarrandji, Sonya Yunupingu, Douglas Yunupingu and Roy Munungurr. From Gumatj Association; Sam Bukulatjpi; From Dhimurru Land Management: Gathapura Mununggurr and Grace Wanga Mununggurritj; and From Bunuwal Industrial: Jerome Dhamarrandji and Wali Burarrwanga.
Jobs in the Homelands include eco-tourism MY travels around the electorate in the past fortnight have taken me to the beautiful and very industrious communities of Mata Mata, Nyinyikay and Mapuru which are serviced by Marthakal Homeland Resource Centre based in Galiwin’ku on Elcho Island. I also visited Gikal which is currently unoccupied. These Homelands are testimony to the strength of Yolngu culture where families are living healthy and productive lives and, where a school is present, such as Mapuru, kids are attending that school and learning both English and Djambarrpuyngu. Talented artists reside in each of these homelands and work incredibly hard in a range of mediums; painting, weaving and jewellery. I was delighted to have been able to provide transport to market (Buku Larrngay Gallery at Yirrkala) for a dozen or so stunning baskets from Mapuru which provide good income
Apology DUE to a production problem, unfortunately, the last sentence was omitted from Lynne Walker’s column in last week’s edition of the Arafura Times. “Not surprisingly, the decision was overturned due to public outcry.” was omitted from the discussion on the CLP’s attempt to close the maternity ward at Gove District Hospital. The paragraph should have read: “In my 20 plus years in Nhulunbuy, the only thing I can recall the CLP government doing for Gove Hospital was announcing the closure of the maternity ward and a plan to co-locate mothers and babies with patients in the general medical/surgical ward. Not surprisingly, the decision was overturned due to public outcry.” The Arafura Times sincerely apologises for this error.
for the three generations of women who create them. There’s no doubt that the jobs market in Homelands has limitations, but the microeconomies of these particular communities are alive and well when in addition to vibrant traditional arts you Electoral News Member for Nhulunbuy add eco-cultural tourism with by NTLYNNE WALKER Mapuru’s Arnhem Weavers business a case in point. NEWS last week of Lirrwi Yolngu Tourism’s success in attracting an $825,000 Federal grant to grow tourism enterprises on Homelands is fantastic news. Timmy Djawa Burrarwanga is to be congratulated on this outcome, recognising also the strong support of Matt Grooby and John Morse in developing the strategic vision which will provide opportunities for Yolngu wanting to establish or grow existing businesses and provide real employment and build community capacity. During a debate in parliament last year about the strength of the Territory economy, I delivered a speech about the economy of the Nhulunbuy electorate and spoke of the diversity between a global mining company and the fibre artists at Mapuru. I was lambasted and ridiculed by the CLP’s David Tollner during my speech who queried what baskets had to do with the Territory economy. His complete lack of understanding about Indigenous people, his labelling of communities as ‘hell holes’, his support of ‘urban drift’, make the Darwinbased Member for Fong Lim (who has twice challenged Terry Mills for the leadership), a most unlikely coordinator of
the CLP’s bush campaign. I certainly look forward to hearing what Allen Fanning, the CLP candidate for Nhulunbuy, has to say about Homelands and trust he does not hold the same views as his mentor.

CROSSWORD No. 107
SUDOKU No. 107
Your Lucky
Stars
CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) You may be feeling a little bit “hemmed in” emotionally at the moment. You need more room to develop other interests. Work on developing yourself personally. Romance. A person who has been admiring you for some time will suddenly pluck up enough courage to talk to you. It may surprise you who notices you from afar!
LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) A meeting with a stranger may last much longer than you expect. Don’t try to brush them off: this person may have a surprise in store for you! Romance. If other people don’t take you seriously there could be trouble this week. Avoid getting angry and don’t let your feelings become too intense.
VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)
FOR KIDS
You will find the need this week to charge ahead despite people who want to hold you back. Put your recent burst of energy to good use and don’t worry about those who can’t keep up. Romance. Your partner will be quick to say how much they appreciate you. Be grateful for their support and be sure to reciprocate their gesture.
LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) A very long conversion with a friend could leave you exhausted. While you may want to hear how they are getting on, you will not have enough patience to listen to all the details. Romance. A new romance may start to liven up a bit. You will still need to be very patient, however. It will pay off in the end if you give it some time.
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) Try not to become too jealous about something which a friend of yours has bought recently. You will soon have something even more impressive yourself! Romance. Some romantic changes will be coming into your life. Apart from one change, these will be important improvements. It will take some time to get used to your new circumstances.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) Make sure that you don’t get involved in a situation which could be difficult to get out of. Avoiding getting entangled in the first place: it will save you a lot of trouble. Romance. A person whom you met recently may have a stronger hold on you than you think. This bond is worth examining more deeply.
FINDWORD No. 107 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th)
Your ability to be flexible will help you to pull through. A change in plan may work out much better than you anticipate. Inflexibility will only hurt you this week. Romance. Your partner will be in a suspiciously good mood this week. Try to find out why! You will have to dig deep: things may not be as they seem.
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)
For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au
MUDDY RIVER
A personal remark may seem a little overthe-top. Try to find out what your friend thought they would achieve by making it. However, confrontation could create more problems than it solves. Romance. Your partner will appreciate your confident mood. Be careful though: they will not be the only one who notices.
PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) Don’t let other people impact you with a defeatist attitude. Try to brush off their comments and keep a positive attitude. Someone important will take notice if you do. Romance. You may find it a little heavy-going at times. However, your determination and strong will will be enough to see you through.
ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) A recent boost to your career will give you the chance to focus on your future finances. Keep an eye on your investments: the situation will soon become much clearer. Romance. Make sure that you don’t miss an exciting opportunity. Take the initiative: you won’t regret it if you are the one to take the first step.
TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)
QUOTE OF THE DAY
“
“
Walking with a
friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light.
– Helen Keller
SOLUTIONS No. 107
You should be in top form at the moment. You will have no problem winning an argument with your superior logic. Don’t let it go to your head! Romance. Despite pressure to the contrary, you may want to keep a recent friendship on a purely platonic level. It may be a good idea to keep things the way they are.
GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) You have not been told the whole story about recent events. You may need to delve a little deeper beneath the surface to find out what’s really going on. Romance. You will be surprised how quickly your relationship with an old friend warms up. Don’t be afraid to step out and take a chance.

NEWS
Taking a slow boat to PNG By MARJO HALLOWELL ONE might think that anyone was a little crackers if they attempted to travel to Papua New Guinea in a 4.5 metre (15 foot) boat. That could be how Craig Hand got his nickname - Crackers - as he is making his third such visit and called in to Gove last week. He gave a presentation at the Gove Boat Club last Thursday night to highlight what his first trip in 2008 started. His current voyage - which will take between six to eight months - is also about enjoying the experience of the trip with some appointments at schools along the way. The ‘Cracker Tracker’ has been set up to let followers know where he is at any given time as he enjoys the fishing and experiences along the way. He was met by customs and the Maningrida Rangers who saw him on the Cracker Tracker and school kids from Maningrida came down to the boat when they saw (on the tracker) that he was there. “I am absolutely overwhelmed by the coastline hospitality. I thought country people were the most hospitable but along the coast I fell like the red carpet
has been rolled out for me.” Never one to stand still for too long he has been around Australia twice, up and down it 20 times, traveled the world three times, been a courier driver on the freeways of California, managed a pub in London where the the locals called ‘Guv’. Crackers said, “I was at Unification Day in Berlin (Pink Floyd, U2 , Jo Cocker, etc) and saw the wall come down with tear gas in my eyes and I have met Bob Geldof, he shouted me three beers and we had a great chat. “I am a 10 time Territorian adventurer and for the last three years I have been caretaker at the Fannie Bay equestrian club at East Point in Darwin.” He first set off from Lismore in 2008 where he repaired a boat that had been sitting in a paddock for years and set off for an adventure up north driving and taking his little boat to some remote areas on Cape York. His first crossing of Torres Strait was in 2008. “My adventure into the remote heart of Western Province was by chance, following a return trip from Seisia in Australia to Papua New Guinea across the treacherous Torres Strait in a 4.5 metre fishing boat, the smallest to have
Breaking news AS the Arafura Times was going to press on Monday, a search and rescue operation is in fullm swing in the Gulf of Carpentaria after an EPIRB was activated during the morning. It was activated from the catamaran Nebula at 8am and search and rescue teams scrambled to the area.
The Darwin man and a mate were sailing between Weipa and Gove and the EPIRB was activated in the middle of the Gulf of Carpentaria. The Dornier Aircraft has been dispatched for the search and there were strong wind warnings and high seas on Monday.

ABOVE: Crackers with the Sibidiri Tribe in PNG. RIGHT: King Targai with a bow and arrow gift. completed the return trip solo and to another country from Australia without any backup or sponsorship. “I stumbled across the village of Sibidiri, population around 200, of whom only about a handful spoke some English. I was their very first tourist.” The Tribe hadn’t seen a white man for two years and they had none of the comforts of home we are familiar with. They caught or gathered all their own food and had no electricity “I gave the king’s son the shirt off my own back. I gave the elders golf lessons on the riverbank in front of the whole tribe who were laughing and having a great time. “There are no roads or airports and travel is by dugout canoe or foot through the jungle. “I spent five months living in my Little Red Boat in the Torres Strait, Cape York and the remote islands in the northern zone of The Great Barrier Reef before crossing the Gulf of Carpentaria.” For his second 50 day trip in 2010 he towed his little red boat from Darwin to Seisa driving 4000 kilometres in four days before preparing the boat for the crossing of the Torres Strait. He held a fundraiser before this trip and took with him tools, equipment and clothing which were distributed to the tribe by their king. It took him 16 days to reach the remote tribe of Sibidiri where his first task was to connect them to the outside world. “I installed VHF emergency radio communications that relay from Thursday Island, 200 kilometres away and to Cairns, around 1000 kilometres away.” He said that on his previous visit he learnt of a man had taken his son, who had broken his leg, off to get help and wasn’t able to communicate what was happening with the tribe. They had a 130 metre tower which was built 10 years ago but nothing had ever been attached to it. He said he taught the children geography through a translator with the aid of a globe and a laminated map as most only knew their way up and down the river in dugout canoes. “I performed a number of first aid clinics and held the first fishing competition in the Western Province
of PNG.” “Before leaving I was made a member of the Tribe after receiving fellowship.”
The trip was followed around the world on Facebook and ABC Radio in Darwin did live talks to air via satellite phone. Crackers set up school sponsorship for remote PNG Tribal kids on www.friendsofpapuanewguinea.org His visit to Gove is just the beginning of his third trip and he will follow the Arnhem Land coast, the Gulf of Carpentaria, Cape York, PNG and possibly end at Cooktown or Cairns The Mayor of Darwin and Darwin City Council have donated funds towards medical and educational equipment for the Sibidiri Tribe and he received help and advise from remote area health. The equipment is being shipped to the east coast ready for the Torres Strait leg of the journey. He is Facebooking his adventures and has started YouTube uploads and will be promoting and uploading footage of my trip as I go. “I believe that people from all over Australia will want to follow my adventure and with the trip taking approximately six to eight months. “In this time I will have no income, no film crew or back up. I have previously traveled for five months in remote areas and am prepared.” He is being tracked online with near real time updates at www.esriaustralia.com.au/crackertracker/ You can also follow him on Facebook “Craig Hand Darwin” or YouTube - CrackersAdventures Also be sure to visit www.friendsofpapuanewguinea. org and www.crackers-remote-fishing-adventures. com

Death by chocolate a reality for pets WHILE it may be tempting to share a sweet treat with your pet, chocolate is dangerous to pets and can be fatal, according to VetShopAustralia. com.au. The online pet supply retailer said substances in chocolate which are safe for humans to consume can affect or kill dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and other pets. “The phrase ‘death by chocolate’ is no joke when it comes to pets, who can suffer chocolate toxicosis, or poisoning,” VetShopAustralia.
com.au head veterinarian Dr Mark Perissinotto said. “Chocolate contains theobromine which is a potent potentially lethal toxin for pets. Unlike humans our pets can’t metabolise these chemicals properly and are susceptible to the toxic effects,” he said. “Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive thirst and urination, rapid breathing, seizures, increased heart rate, coma or even death.”

$22,000 for upkeep on boat ramp THE local fishing club was presented a cheque for $22,000 on behalf of the NT Government last week. The $22k is a contribution from the NT Government towards the upkeep of the facilities at the Mud Wharf Ramps adjacent the Toll Marine Logistics operations over the next two years. Member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker made the presentation and said this is an interim arrangement while longer-term arrangements around tenure associated with the wharf are considered and ultimately resolved. “Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club has previously sought a contribution to the on-going costs around maintenance of the boat ramp facilities at the Nhulunbuy mud wharf and I have worked hard to support that bid,” Ms Walker said. “The Henderson Labor Government has now spent more than $600,000 on fishing infrastructure funding over the last five years in the Nhulunbuy region, representing around 10 per cent of the total fishing infrastructure funds spent by government during this same period. “Of this funding, $250,000 was spent for upgrades of the Gove Boat Club ramp as well as $25,000 for insurance costs, noting that there is a lease arrangement in place. A further $385,000 has been spent on the Mud Wharf boat ramp to enable completion of stage five and six of NRSFC’s Melville Bay redevelopment project. “I will continue to advocate strongly for Government to support stage seven of the project which would see construction of a large vessel pontoon.”
The Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club has been caring for this area for the past 30-plus years. In August, 2000, the NRSFC coordinated the upgrade of the existing, eastern single-lane ramp using volunteer labour and donations. At the same time, the club was responsible for the care and maintenance of the previous small-craft floating pontoon, while the NT Government contributed spare parts and materials. Club members provided the labour to extend the life of the pontoon when maintenance costs exceeded the replacement costs. However, when the floating sections begun to hole, it was removed by the club for safety reasons. Unfortunately, it was not replaced. The mud wharf is part of the Toll Marine Logistics lease and permission was granted in 2005 for the club to operate from this location if it took on the public liability, care and maintenance of this area and facilities. In 2006. applications to the Federal Government were successful for improvements and, in 2008, a double-lane ramp was installed to triple the launching capability of the facilities. Automatic wash bay, surveillance cameras and safety signage followed with a NT Government grant of $384K being awarded in 2010 for a concrete turn-around area, with remaining funds being spent on partly sealing the car park. The facilities are not only used by recreational anglers and trailer boat owners, but by all commercial operators and businesses in Nhulunbuy requiring water access - police, Customs, Quarantine, Norforce, charter operators and refinery maintenance crews.
Members of the NRSFC Garry Aards and Ralph and Robyn Pellenat received the cheque from Member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker at the Boat Ramp. An application was made in 2007 to the “This funding will see the next two years of NT Government to provide funds for ongoing public liability insurance, repairs and maintenance insurance and maintenance costs. of the ramp secured and will also assist with the A project application was submitted in 2011 continued maintenance of the Bromby Island for eight years of maintenance, insurance costs Repeater. and upkeep of the Bromby Island Repeater, “Less than 10 per cent of boat owners in town another community project by the NRSFC, along are members of the NRSFC, yet the club has taken with the installation of the new pontoon purchased responsibility to ensure these facilities remain safe by the club in 2009. and available to everyone.” Unfortunately, this application was not Like all non-profit organisations it always successful and the new pontoon remains moored welcomes volunteers and assistance. opposite the yacht club. CareFlight training community volunteers CAREFLIGHT is bringing its first NT medical simulation training course to Nhulunbuy for emergency service personnel. Local volunteers and emergency staff from the region will take part in the Nhulunbuy workshops early next month. In addition, CareFlight will have a stand again at this year’s Gove Peninsula Festival. After conducting an initial 15 courses across rural New South Wales, CareFlight has obtained sponsorship from Johnson and Johnson Medical to bring this vital training for frontline emergency service staff and volunteers. Already successful courses have been held at Katherine, Darwin and Palmerston and at the more remote communities of Timber Creek, Jabiru, Mataranka, Adelaide River and Batchelor.
CareFlight MediSim training course in the Top End.
CareFlight director Ian Badham said the sponsored courses were a separate activity to the organisation’s provision of the Top End Aeromedical Service which is funded by the NT Government. “The CareFlight MediSim is our charity’s way of giving back to the community we serve in a very practical and beneficial way,” Mr Badham said. CareFlight is expanding the rollout of its Trauma Care workshop designed to enhance the skills, knowledge and confidence of experienced emergency service personnel faced with at a trauma care situation such as a motor vehicle crash, or injury at remote location. The program is designed specifically for rural and remote regions and is a mix of theoretical and simulation based trauma training delivered by CareFlight nurses and doctors experienced in on-scene trauma treatment. Workshops cover the triage of patients, assessment and treatment in sustaining the life of a trauma victim and supporting medical teams in preparing patients. CareFlight provides the training modules which allow the personnel to work together with their colleagues to practice tasks and processes in lifelike clinical and critical scenarios. They learn about trauma care skills and communication from doctors and clinicians who have had years of experience in these stressful situations.
The program includes using CareFlight’s MediSim, a self-contained mobile simulation-based trauma education classroom and highly developed mannequins that can respond to treatment and simulate a real trauma patient. Through sponsorship from Johnson & Johnson Medical, and with support from Darwin’s National Critical Care & Trauma Response Centre, and the Department of Health, CareFlight is providing this training at no cost to the participants - NTES, Fire
and Rescue, Parks and Wildlife NT, National Park rangers and St John volunteers who give their time and effort to support the community. Since CareFlight started the MediSim program last year, workshops have been conducted training over 200 emergency service volunteers, while, this year, 32 workshops are planned with more than 600 volunteers from NSW, Victoria and the Northern Territory learning from experienced trauma care doctors, nurses and paramedics.

Hills International College sent a record 16 players to compete at the World Junior championships, representing 10 per cent of the field from 28 countries. A record-breaking 292, three shots better
than the previous record, from Quayle saw him finish third. Hills’ director of golf Tom Berndt said it was a courageous effort from Quayle. Brendt said: “In my view, we are by far the strongest high school in terms of depth that we have and we have been producing the highest amount of good quality players
for a long time.’’ ``We are a good breeding ground for players who are finding us from all around the world.” In the three divisions contested by Hills, it had two top-10 finishes in the open boys, seventh in the under-15 and three top-15 finishes in the open girls.
Nominations for junior Hall of Fame open JUST two weeks remain for Australian junior athletes to apply for The Sport Australia Hall of Fame (SAHOF) 2012/2013 Scholarship and Mentoring Program which closes on August 1. SAHOF’s vision is to preserve the history of Australian sport and to excite the next generation of Australians to achieve their potential in both sport and life and the SAHOF program is one opportunity to continue achieving this vision. Supported by SAHOF major sponsor/official airline Etihad Airways and Victoria University, five scholarships will be awarded for 2012/2013 to young Australian athletes (under 21 as at December 31, 2012), providing encouragement and funding to help them reach the highest level of their sport. More importantly scholarship holders will enjoy unrivalled access to and personal mentoring from SAHOF inductees - surely no greater way to inspire young sports people. Each 12 month Scholarship, valued at over $10,000, will apply from October 1 2012 to September 30, 2013 and will consist of; * Personal Mentoring by a SAHOF inductee * $5000 cash sporting grant presented at the prestigious SAHOF annual induction and awards dinner - October 11, Crown Palladium, Melbourne (incl travel costs)) * Etihad Airways flight - one return economy flight within the Etihad Airways network. * Scholarship Recognition Certificate * Invitation to exclusive SAHOF events Past scholarship holders who have benefited greatly from the Program, many of whom will compete at this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in London include;
school,” Ms Macklin said. “Encouraging young people, particularly those from remote communities, to go to school regularly gives them the best start for a bright future.” The Aboriginals Benefit Account holds and distributes statutory royalty equivalent monies generated from mining on Aboriginal land in the Northern Territory for projects that benefit Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory. The AFL has invested $1.5 million into the project, underlining the importance of the Northern Territory to the code. Acting Chief Executive Officer of the AFL Gillon McLachlan sees the Learning and Leadership Centre as a significant development for AFL football in the Territory. “The Northern Territory has long been a producer of elite talent, along with mass community engagement in football,” Mr McLachlan said. “The Learning and Leadership Centre ties these two aspects together to strengthen football in the Territory and create outcomes in education and employment that promise widespread social benefit.” More information on RDAF can be found at www.regional.gov.au
