Exchange student arrives in Gove By MARJO HALLOWELL NHULUNBUY Rotary club will be hosting an exchange student from Finland for the next 12 months. Emilia Anttikoski, 17, arrived from her hometown of Turku in Finland last week, and, on Wednesday night, made a presentation to the Rotarians about herself, her family and her home. Turku is a harbour city which is 700 years old and has a population of 180,000. She has one brother and one sister. Emilia’s mother is a teacher

and her father a photographer and sales manager. She used to play basketball and now enjoys tennis. while acting is also one of the activities she enjoys as well as bodyjump and zumba. Her dream is to own her own company and learn about different cultures and the way people live; and that is partly the reason she came to Gove. Saunas are a part of everyday life with most houses having one. Skiing is also a sport that she is keen on, however, she will not be seeing much snow in Gove.

The beaches have captivated her and Emilia admitted it was quite a bit warmer here than it was in Finland. Her first hosts are Leanne and Pino Parise and during the course of the next 12 months she will also stay with Stephanie and Paul Free and Brendan and Maria Muldoon. Home is just a skype call away and she has already spoken to her family showing them around by using her ipad. Emilia was keen to start school and is now a student at Nhulunbuy High. Hosts Leanne and Pino Parise with Emilia Anttikoski.

Boat sinks in shallow water A BOAT that sank off Wallaby Beach last week sparked a search by police divers. The boat, commonly known around Gove as The Ark, is a 20metre, steel mono-hull cruiser that had been moored in Gove Harbour for many years. It can be seen at low tide and there is now a red buoy attached to warn other boats in the area of

danger below. Police were unable to confirm reports how the vessel appears to have been skuttled in 30 metres of water as the investigation is continuing. No charges have yet been laid. When Police were notified of the vessel, Police divers conducted a search of the vessel for occupants. A red buoy off Wallaby Beach warns passing vessels of danger below.

Nursery re-opens in Yirrkala THE Yirrkala Community Nursery has reopened in Yirrkala, marking an important step in the development of Nuwal Environmental Services. Nuwal is the product of three years of development by traditional owner Banduk Marika and Gareth Wise. After the closure of Landcare several years ago, Banduk wanted to see the establishment of a new organisation to fill the void. She invited Mr Wise to come to Yirrkala for two months to help train staff and, now three years on, he has carried on as manager, often funding the business out of his own pocket. The nursery forms the hub of the business, providing plants for sale to the general public, for bush remediation and other projects. Mr Wise has been carryng out landscaping and garden maintenance work to raise the funds to get things going and now employs several staff, as well as gaining volunteer assistance from Yolngu and non-indigenous community members. He has recently been carrying out successful programs at Yirrkala School with both curriculum-based gardening and special needs projects.’ Miwatj Health is working alongside Nuwal as part of their popular “Strong

Fathers” project, coordinated by Scott Beverstock. Gareth’s work saw him recently being a guest speaker at the ‘Tropical Garden Spectacular’ in Darwin alongside Costa, Leonie Norrington, and other gardening experts Some may remember the nursery featuring on the SBS production “Costa’s Working in the nursery. Pearling company Wonga has its assets sold Creek

A PEARLING company has had all its assets sold into a managed investment scheme. The remains of the company, Arafura Pearls, is still listed on the Australian Securities Exchange. Administrators KordaMentha will hold a creditors’ meeting on Monday to discuss what should be done with the company which is subject to a deed of company arrangement. Manager appointed to reduce litter in communities

THE Keep Australia Beautiful Council Northern Territory (KABC NT) has appointed Shane McNamee (pictured) to manage the National Bin Network East Arnhem Shire Council Pilot Trial. The Trial was launched with $230,000 Industry funding to reduce litter and recover resources

within seven of the Territory’s Growth Towns over the next 12-18 months. The program is part of the National Bin Network (NBN) $100-million, fiveyear industry funded plan to increase recycling and reduce litter nationally under the COAG National Waste Policy review, providing an effective and efficient alternative to some of the options being considered under the review. The NBN is fully funded by industry and is at no cost to Territorians. It also addresses all litter and packaging recycling and not just a sub-set group such as beverage containers. Mr McNamee said: “I am really looking forward to being a part of this pilot and trust that we can talk about positive progress in East Arnhem Shire over the next 18 months”. “This will allow everyone within their individual communities to be part of the solution towards cleaner and healthier communities,” Mr McNamee said. Under the pilot, KABC(NT) will roll out the new Clean Up Book and other resources to help local communities clean up, recycle and keep their communities clean into the future. Seven Territory Growth Towns in the East

Arnhem Shire Council will participate in the pilot - Galiwinku, Milingimbi, Gapuwiyak, Ramingining, Angurugu, Yirrkala and Umbakumba. The pilot NBN program has adequate resources and support to work collectively with local councils, community groups such as schools, stores, and environment groups to reduce litter and increase recovery of our valuable resources. KABC(NT) CEO, Mr. Heimo Schober said: “KABC NT is all about positively engaging the community to generate real environmental outcomes. We’re supporting this pilot as an alternative to the options being considered under the COAG National Waste Policy review. The National Bin Network is efficient and collaborative and has the potential to deliver strong social and environmental outcomes. “Based on our four decades of experience, we believe Territorians love to recycle and will do so when they’re given an opportunity. We expect the trial will be very successful and we hope it provides fresh ideas to government for more effective litter and recycling policies in the Territory,” said Mr Schober.

Kids tops at conserving water SOME interesting information has been released by CensusATSchool. To conserve the environment, 86 per cent of Australian students turn the tap off while brushing their teeth. Walking is the third most-popular method of travelling to school by students Australia-wide, with Victoria having the highest percentage (18 per cent) although figures for Nhulunbuy were not available. Trends in internet use among Australian students remain consistent from 2011 - girls mostly use the internet for social networking (45 per cent), while boys mainly play games (50 per cent). The most-popular sport for girls in 2012 is netball (26 per cent), unchanged since students were first asked about their favourite sport in CensusAtSchool 2008. Boys prefer soccer over AFL: 19 per cent compared to 12 per cent.

1 - 7 August 2012

These interesting facts, sourced from a random sample taken from the 2012 CensusAtSchool questionnaire data, reveal rich information about Australian students in 2012. Since 2006, approximately one in four schools and over 200,000 students have participated in this voluntary nation-wide questionnaire. This year, approximately 22,000 students from Years 5 to 12 participated nationally in the CensusAtSchool questionnaire. CensusAtSchool is an annual project designed for education purposes only. Its aim is to spark students’ interest in statistics. This interactive questionnaire allows students to complete 30 questions by entering data on topics such as their height, what they had for breakfast and their opinions on environmental and social issues.

CDU ecologist snares big fish award CHARLES Darwin University aquatic ecologist Alison King (pictiured) has been nationally recognised for her contribution in the field of Australian fresh-water fish biology. Associate Professor King, a Principle Research Fellow at CDU’s Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods, received the Early Career Excellence Award at an Australian Society for Fish Biology conference in Adelaide last week. The award acknowledges scientists in the early phase of their careers, whose contributions to the study of fish biology or fisheries have fundamentally changed the understanding or management of fishes. Dr King, an internationally published aquatic ecologist, said : “The award primarily recognises the research I undertook at the BarmahMillewa forest on the Murray River, which provided new knowledge on how flow regimes influence fish spawning and recruitment.”

Six charged over $200,000 kava haul On The Beat with NT Police

SIX people have been charged after 201kg of kava, with an estimated street value of about $200,000, was seized at Nhulunbuy Airport on Saturday night. Two Tongan nationals - a man and a woman aged 20 and 54 - from Sydney were remanded in custody and were scheduled to appear in court in Darwin on Tuesday of this week. Two men and two women from Gapuwiyak and Ramingining were bailed to appear in court in Nhulunbuy in August, after being charged following the discovery and seizure of 85kg of kava and a bottle of alcohol, believed to belong to the alleged offenders. The kava, discovered aboard an in-bound flight from Cairns, was found during a routine search by Police.

It was located in 11 bags, with seven, containing 116kg, belonging to the Tongan nationals, and one each to the other four alleged offenders. Men, aged 20, 38, 41, and women, aged, 54. 20 and 40, have all be charged with possession of a commercial quantity of kava and trafficking a commercial quantity of kava. Officer-in-Charge of Nhulunbuy Police Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said: “Northern Territory Police will continue to target kava traffickers. “Particular people are making a lot of money from the communities and

we’re determined to put a stop to it. If any member of the public has information in relation to kava, drugs or alcohol in remote communities please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.” Luggage in which kava was detected at Nhulunbuy Airport on Saturday night. Photo courtesy NT Police.

Kava prevented from going into communities DRUGS believed to be destined for north-west Arnhem Land were seized by police last Monday, July 23. Police from the Dog Operations Unit and the Drug and Organised Crime Squad intercepted 75kg of kava believed to be destined for an Indigenous community. A total of 327kg of kava has been seized by Police in under three weeks following another kava bust in Darwin last Tuesday, July 24. The seized kava was packaged into 16,600 individual plastic bags for sale in indigenous communities. Detective Superintendent Tony Fuller said the latest bust brings the potential total value between $332,000 and $830,000 for the kava seized in recent weeks. “It is not just the health impact on the community members or the profits to be gained which concern us, it is also the economic impact that the large amount of money will have leaving the community,” he said. The money does not stay in the community or the Northern Territory for that matter, it ends up lining the pockets of a few in the southern states who profit significantly from this illicit trade. “NT Police appreciate the excellent assistance provided by members of the public who share our concerns and provide valuable information about these illegal substances.” The three consignments consisted of the following weights: • 162kg packaged into 8100 small bags - June 28. • 90kgpackaged into 5500 small bags - July 19. • 75kg packaged into 3000 small bags - July 23. If anyone has any information in relation to these or other drug matters please call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

TICKETS go on sale on August 1 for the Variety Queens ‘Oojah on the Grass Bash’ on August 25. One of the Variety Queens Angie Moyle said the event is to be held at the Gun Club and is their major fundraiser for the year. “The theme is country so don your jeans and cowboy hats,” she said. “A good night of entertainment is assured.” There will be a licensed bar and tickets include food and transport to and from the event. Tickets are on sale from August 1 at Qantas in Endeavour Square. A lot of people missed out on the New Year’s Black and Bling Bash so be sure to get in early to avoid disappointment. “Oojah Cockraine is the band and they also came and played at our last

part of the concert with contributions from Yirrkal, the Nhulunbuy Christian College and the Arafura Dance Association. One of the volunteers is Rebecca Harris (pictured right), principal cellist and a lecturer in cello for the School of Creative Arts and Humanities at Charles Darwin University. She has achieved equal success as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player, teacher and performer of contemporary music. Refusing to be boxed into one style, she is in the Darwin-based rock band, worldfly. The band won the 2005 5th Australian Songwriters Award with their single Someone Special. Prior to moving to Darwin, Rebecca performed with the Tasmanian and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras’

big fundraiser. They were a local band with some of the members moving on from Gove but they are reuniting again for this event to help fundraise for the sick and disadvantaged children of the Territory. “The lead singer Lara Conaghan dedicated her time to the Queens during her stay in Gove, and always comes back to help us raise these funds so it is just as passionate to her as it is to the current Queens,” said Ms Moyle. The Variety fundraising year ends at the end of August and the funds raised from this event will go towards, hopefully, keeping the Queens as the highest fundraisers for the NT for Variety as they vie for the “Top Hat” award. This is an 18 and over event and tickets are $75 each. Transport leaves from 6.30pm.

On the classical front, Rebecca has performed Elgar’s Cello Concerto with the Darwin Symphony Orchestra, and debuted for Musica Viva and Darwin Festival with Duo Lointain, which then made its German debut in 2007 performing

in Bavaria. In December, 2008, Rebecca was joined with didgeridoo player William Barton and German Guitarist Wulfin Lieske where they performed at the Adelaide International Guitar Festival. Tickets are available through Lynne Walker’s office, LJ Hookers and Gove Tackle and Outdoor.

Hypnotist set to mesmorise Gove A HYPNOTIST is coming to the Arnhem Club in September for fun and entertainment. Bizarre Gazzard! (Rohan Gazzard) is coming to Gove for two shows. The first fun show on Saturday, September 8. for which the Club is providing a dinner-and-show deal, or you can just attend the show. The second show on the Sunday is a ‘quit smoking’’ show for all those who might want to give it a go. To witness the Bizarre Gazzard is an experience you will never forget. You will be amazed and dumbfounded by the power of the mind then laugh yourself hoarse at the antics of your friends. You’ve seen other stage hypnotists on TV, now imagine this combined with a true blue Aussie larrikin, the Bizarre Gazzard. The Bizarre Gazzard is a fully qualified clinical hypnotherapist who has over 10 years of stage experience as has his partner in crime, brilliantly funny stand up comedian and musician, Adam Chicken Palmer. Combining music, costumes, comedy and props this is a must see show where the only people having a better time than the audience are the volunteers themselves. These are the real stars of the night.

The Bizarre Gazzard creed is the show is based purely on fun and enjoyment for the volunteers while fully entertaining the audience at the same time. No moral boundaries are ever compromised and no volunteer will ever be humiliated. No personal secrets are revealed and only purely willing volunteers are utilised. Subjects are never asleep and are actually very aware of everything that is going on around them. The volunteers are made to be the stars of the night and will feel absolutely wonderful at the end of show. He has a website that tells you everything about hypnosis and clinical hypnotherapy (the quit smoking thing) and heaps of other cool facts and pictures (and the videos are a good laugh). His website is www.bizarregazzard.com.au

Change of date for author’s talk THE presentations by children’s author will be on Wednesday, August 1. 1 - 7 August 2012

I WAS one of just two people who took up the open invitation to attend the independent candidate’s public meeting last Tuesday, July 24, in Nhulunbuy. I congratulate Kendall Trudgen, a former student of mine, for initiating the forum. Who knows whether the poor turnout was because of general apathy and disinterest, or the lack of support for an independent candidate. There’s no doubt that independents have an important (and at times influential) role to play in democratic representation in the country’s legislatures, but ultimately it is the major political parties which form governments including minority governments. Many people have commented to me, from both sides of the political divide, that they wish whoever is in government had the mandate to govern and simply get on with the job, without being beholden to independents. Even independents are rarely or truly independent; they form alignments and allegiances. I certainly believe strongly in the power

of one, but I believe even more strongly in the power of the collective to deliver positive and sustainable change, social justice, equity and opportunities for those I represent whether Electoral News in government or op- by NT Member for Nhulunbuy LYNNE WALKER position. And within that collective, I have an independent voice which allows me to speak up and represent all constituents of my electorate because Nhulunbuy is not Darwin. From what I’ve seen so far, Kendall Trudgen’s platform is based primarily on Indigenous matters. He must surely be as concerned, as I am, that the CLP’s platform about no permits and open

access is in complete denial of the existence of the Federal Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1976 which was borne out of the start up of bauxite mining in this region, which was challenged and lost by traditional owners in the early seventies. CLP candidate Allen Fanning must explain to the electorate and to TOs in particular, about what the CLP Manifesto means exactly when it states: “We don’t want to be told where we can and can’t fish,” given that the electorate exists on Aboriginal Land Trust. Where does this stance leave organisations, like Dhimurru, who manage the recreation areas in our region and provide employment for Yolngu rangers who are caring for land and sea country to minimise the impacts of visitors, both environmentally and culturally?

Meeting conflicts with previous commitments LAST week the Chamber of Commerce wrote in the Arafura Times about their upcoming forum. As I have communicated with the Chamber, August 8 is a very impractical date. I have requested that the forum be changed to a date closer to August 12, which is the already decided day of the Gove FM debate, and August 15 which is the beginning of mobile polling. On August 8 I am committed to be in Galiwinku, where more than a quarter of our electorate’s voters are

located, continuing my campaign and fulfilling end of financial year reporting for my Not-For-Profit group. At this stage, I can only commit to a video link for this forum. I will also endeavor to post answers to the chambers questions on my website. www.nhulunbuyindependent. com/news Kendall Trudgen, Independent candidate for Nhulunbuy

Labor takes no accountability for actions WELL, finally our little girl has made her safe arrival. Amira Jane Fanning was finally born on July 24. As a proud father I will make sure she has a great life in the Northern Territory. I would like to thank the people at the Gove District Hospital for their support over our stay there. A special thanks to to the midwives and doctors in Ward 2 who assisted in the birth. I was unaware of the role of a midwife before the birth. Their knowledge and professionalism is amazing. I cannot give them enough praise and thanks. I hope you are enjoying the dry season and, if visiting, enjoy our winter. I have been talking to residents over the past weeks and Financial Assistance Grants (FAGs) funding is an issue that has been mentioned. FAGs funding is disturbed to local governments around Australia for roads and general purpose expenditure. The town of Nhulunbuy is unable to access these funds due to our zoning as a mining lease. I have written to Senator Nigel Scullion to advise of this issue in the hope we can gain funds that are rightfully ours. Last week the Country Liberals announced our five-point plan: 1. Cut Labor’s waste and reduce debt. 2. Strengthen law and order. 3. Grow a ‘3-Hub’ Economy. 4. Plan properly for the future of the Northern Territory.

5. Be accountable. This plan forms the basis of our strategy forward to get the Northern Territory back on track. Our policies make up the ‘nuts and bolts’ of this plan. To develop these policies we have listened to you, the people of the Territory. For further details look at the Country Liberals website or have a chat with me. For me the best part of our plan is accountability. For too long the Labor government has not taken accountability for their actions. An example of this is the Mandorah ferry service in Darwin. I know this is not in our electorate but the same government is responsible. They approached a southern state operator to apply for a tender, which they won. This has resulted in the ferry service operating well below contractual agreement and the needs of locals. The Attorney General of the Northern Territory lives at Mandorah and has not been seen on the ferry service for a while. Once again, highlighting the zero accountability of the Labor government. The Central Arnhem Highway tender was recently awarded at $1.3 million for 36 months. It is fine to budget $15 million for a bridge over the Goyder River, but it is no good if we can’t get there due to the poor condition of the road. The Central Arnhem Highway is a gate-

way to our seat and all parties involved along the way should work together to spend tax payer funds with accountability and transparency. I know that children’s safety, securing a good education and having good health services whilst continually maintaining them is paramount. I believe it is time for Nhulunbuy to become the economic hub of East Arnhem Land and not just a term used by Labor. Regional development of business is the key to a successful and sustainable region. I will be leading from the front to work with all businesses to make this a reality. Upgrading of infrastructure within the region is a priority to encourage better servicing for our region with less dependence on government. For the seat of Nhulunbuy to be the best it can be and for a successful and sustainable future, it needs to move away from Labor and Lynne Walker. On August 25 to make a real change vote Allen Fanning - the voice for the future. Allen Fanning, CLP candidate for Nhulunbuy

Water: Where do we get it, do we have enough? WATER in Gove seems to always be in plentiful supply as the water for the town is drawn from local bores which draw on local aquifers. There are 19 bores with 17 at the airport and two at Latram. There are also a number of bores in local communities although not all are connected. The water is checked weekly by a maintenace crew which ensures levels are maintained. The water does, however, come at a cost, as the water is made even purer than its original state through an aeration process which is power driven. Gove Operations Pacific Aluminium (GOPA) has a licence, as issued by the NT Govt (NT Water Controller) to draw water from the borefield. Water is extracted from a groundwater supply or ‘aquifer’ and transferred via production bores from the aquifer to the South Pumping Station. Here the water is split into two feeds at the South Pumping Station to the Gove Operations refinery which includes small users (Ski Beach and Wallaby Beach) and to the town which is sufficient for overall town

RSPCA pays part of desexing costs By SARAH HOWLAND IN conjunction with RSPCA Nhulunbuy’s free pickup and drop-off service, RSPCA Nhulunbuy would also like to offer $50 towards the cost of de-sexing your pet. This offer is for the first 50 pets. Families with several pets are eligible for each pet they book in to be de-sexed, provided the 50 pet quota hasn’t been reached. We can’t reiterate enough the importance of having your pet de-sexed because we, here at the RSPCA, really don’t want to be euthanising dogs or cats just because we can’t find a home for them due to over-population. There are also many benefits for both you and your pets. De-sexed pets make better pets, councils offer significantly cheaper registration fees, your pet is less likely to wander, run away or fight, and de-sexed pets live longer, healthier lives with reduced risks of mammary cancer and uterine infections. RSPCA Nhulunbuy is trying to simplify this process for you. All you

not have to pay for their water, need to be aware of the importance of conserving water to ensure there is always sufficient available during emergencies.

need to do is phone Gove Veterinary Services (8987 1101) and mention the $50 discount when you make an appointment for your pet. The next step is to then phone RSPCA Nhulunbuy (0437 526 502) and book our delivery service. We will pick up your pet from home before 8.15am on the day of the appointment and then drop them off after 4pm when they have recovered from surgery. We are more than happy to work around you so if you need to go to work early we can arrange boarding for your pet (at your expense) for the night before and then return your pet the following evening. Nothing is impossible. Please phone and discuss any queries you have regarding the logistics of getting your pet to and from the vet. We have four gorgeous kittens. Matty (male) is pictured, Nikki (F), Jack(M) and Rogue (M) who are looking for loving new homes. They are about 10-11 weeks old, litter trained, vaccinated, wormed and will be de-sexed. Then there is Jimmy, the mostexquisite Burmilla cross. He is 18

months old with plenty of personality, loads of affection and he loves to spend his days curled up in a cosy spot near you or padding around the house following you like a big old jaguar.

Quayle third in Golf World Cup LITTLE did the parents of a seven-year-old realise that when they bought their son a toy golf set that 10 years later he would be playing in major international competitions. Anthony Quayle and partner Jake McLeod finished third in the Third Annual Optimist Golf World Cup last Wednesday, just two strokes behind the joint winners. This was on top of Quayle win-

ning the Fort Myers competition the previous week in a play-off with Jake Sherwin at the Cypress Lakes course in Florida. Quayle is currently on tour in the U.S. and returns at the end of July. While he was there, accompanied by his father, Ben, they took the time to check out Oakland University in Michigen where he has been offered a full scholarship.

Quayle has been at the Hills International College for almost three years focusing on his golf, and has travelled extensively, playing throughout Australia and overseas with a trip to Jakarta last month where he finished third and this tour of the U.S. His mother, Margaret Quayle, said she was delighted at his success., “I’m very excited and jealous (that I am not there) and as proud as punch,” she said. “Neither Ben nor I play golf and, when we bought him the toy set, we took him to the golf course and he became hooked. It wasn’t long before we had to buy him a proper junior set and he was invited to go to a week-long coaching camp. “The Pro at the time recognised his potential and talent and he went to the camp as an eightyear-old.” Mrs Quayle said she saw her husband in the background in a shot of her son putting in the play-off in the Fort

Myers competition and was wishing she was there. “With so much time away playing, he will have to get back and knuckle down to study for Y12 when he returns,” she said. “I am amazed by the determination and dedication Anthony has displayed for so many years. “He has worked long and hard to get to where he is and has perhaps missed out on some thing but he is doing what he loves.” LITTLE did the parents of a seven-year-old realise that when they bought their son a toy golf set that 10 years later he would be playing in major international competitions. Kids urged to write to Olympians

MEMBERS of the Gove Peninsula Surf Lifesaving Club have been busy with additional training to ensure they keep our beaches safe. Denise Marrable was giving advanced training to holders of Bronze Medallions on the water-rescue craft. Last Sunday they were practising how to rescue both conscious and unconscious people from the water. Those taking part had to already have achieved a certain level of competency in rescue techniques before they could work with the rescue water craft. The Surf Club patrols Town Beach every Sunday during the dry season between 8am and noon with nipper training from 9am.

OLYMPIC legend Cathy Freeman (pictured) is urging students to write letters of encouragement to Australia’s Olympic and Paralympic Teams in London. Students taking part in Australia Post’s Letter Link program with teachers this year ordering around 300,000 pre-addressed Letter Link envelopes. This is more than double the 120,000 envelopes requested in 2008. It is the first time students have been able to write to Australia’s Paralympic Teams since the program began in 1992. This year, students and their teachers can also draw from the resources on the Australia Post Letter Link website, including colourful letter templates, information about the games and how mail is delivered.
