Teens forfeit alcohol permits

THE number of alcohol permit holders, who are abusing their right to purchase alcohol by supplying their under-age friends, is becoming a major concern to local authorities.

As teenagers turn 18 they are eligible to apply for the permits.

Unfortunately, authorities say, some then abuse the privilege and buy and supply alcohol for their under-age friends or for people without permits.

Officer-in-charge of Nhulunbuy Police Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said he was hoping parents would talk to their children about the responsibilities that go along with holding a permit.

“These young people should be made aware of the problems associated with alcohol abuse, such as the increased rates of domestic violence and anti-social behaviour,” he said.

“They should also be aware that, in the Gove area, it is an criminal offense to supply alcohol to non-permit holders and, as such. they risk getting a criminal record if they appear before the Court.

“Police take this very seriously and work in conjunction with the Justice Department who issue the permits.”

Two teenagers, who had their permits only for a short time, forfeited their permits last week. These are additional to a female who lost her permit in March after having had it for just over a week.

“Parents of underage teenagers should also be aware that their children may be gaining access to alcohol from their friends who have already turned 18,” Snr Sgt Muldoon added.

Managing Director of the Arnhem Club, Nigel Baker said only financial members of the club can purchase from the bottle shop and you have to be 18 to become a member.

“The till will not operate until a current membership card has been swiped through its reader,” he said.

“We always ask for ID and proof of age for new members.

Then there is the alcohol-permit management system which is used for every transaction in the bottle shop.

“Without a valid permit, you cannot purchase takeaway alcohol.”

Manager of the Walkabout Tavern Tony Weldon said under-age drinking is a problem nation-wide and is not restricted to Gove.

“We are aware it is not just U18s who try to buy alcohol for teenagers,” he said.

“Everyone up here does need a permit to buy alcohol, but we have to be forever vigilant.

“And, if we even suspect someone is buying for under-age teenagers or people who do not hold a permit, we are expected to refuse service and report the matter so that the Department of Justice can then investigate.”

Indon. fishing vessel seized off Gove AN Indonesian fishing vessel, carrying seven crew and suspected of illegal fishing, has been apprehended north-west of Gove.

Customs and Border Protection officers, onboard ACV Corio Bay and operating and in cooperation with the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), apprehended the vessel last Thursday.

A spokesperson for Customs and Border Protection said the vessel was apprehended about 90 nautical miles inside the Australian Fishing Zone, with seven people on board.

Lynne Walker returned for second term 55.1% of vote despite 5% swing

By MARJO HALLOWELL AS the reign of Government in the Northern Territory changed from Labor to the Country Liberal Party on Saturday, Lynne Walker held on firmly to retain the seat of Nhulunbuy with a healthy majority despite a swing of five per cent.

Just six votes separated the other two candidates in Saturday’s Territory election, however Labor’s Mrs Walker was a clear winner from the earliest of counting.

Independent Kendall Trudgen was just six votes behind CLP candidate Allen Fanning although final figures will not be known until Friday after all the postal votes are counted.

Their combined figures - Trudgen 581 (22.3%) and Fanning 587 (22.6%) - still fell short of the 1435 (55.1%) received by Mrs Walker who, therefore, won with an absolute majority and no need for the allocation of preferences.

There were 120 informal

votes (4.4%).

There was a swing of 19 per cent against Mrs Walker on the primary vote, while there was a swing of 3.3 per cent against Mr Fanning.

Therefore, the entire 22.3 per cent swing went to Mr Trudgen.

On a two-party preferred basis, Mrs Walker received 1800 votes (69.2%), almost 1000 ahead of of Mr Fanning on 803 (30.8%). This represented a five per cent swing against Mrs Walker in the final analysis.

Voting on Saturday was at Galuwinbku, Yirrkala and Nhulunbuy and earlier in the week mobile booths had been set up throughout the Homelands.

Mr Trudgen clearly dominated in Galuwin’ku and scored well with the indigenous voters at the mobile booths.

Regional coordinator with the NT Electoral Commission Laurie Jaensch was in Nhulunbuy for two weeks before the election allowing early voting.

“Figures for those voting early were up by about 100 on

last year, with many stating shift work or camping as reasons for utilising the service,” he said.

“Counting at Galuwin’ku and Yirrkala was completed by about 7pm on Saturday and in Nhulunbuy by about 8pm.”

Updates were sent to the tally room which were updated on line every minute.

All the material will now be sent to Darwin for doublechecking and will not be finalised until Friday.

Mrs Walker acknowledged the backlash in the bush based around John Howard’s 2007 NT Emergency Response and the widely held perception that Jenny Macklin’s Stronger Futures Legislation sees its continuation.

“I have never taken anyone’s vote for granted and am humble enough to have never assumed this is a safe seat,” she said.

“Though seated on the Opposition benches, I look forward to continuing to serve the people of the Nhulunbuy electorate and to represent the best interests of

the constituency in the same way I have in the past four years; with hard work and a determination to do the right thing.”

A swing of five per cent to the CLP was not enough for change and Allen Fanning said he was disappointed the people of Nhulunbuy didn’t want to go with the change promised by the CLP. “It is time for a change in Government and the bush seats have more than recognised that need,” he said.

Mr Trudgen congratulated Lynne Walker and the Labor faithful for retaining the seat of Nhulunbuy.

“Thank you to those who have supported my campaign and who voted for me on the day.

“I know our base feels happy that we provided a solid alternative and that we succeeded in raising the level of political accountability for the electorate.

“I now return to my work in Galiwinku, and look forward to spending more time with my family,” he said.

In her 70s, Traudell votes for first time A long-term Nhulunbuy resident in her 70s has voted for the first time in her life.

Traudell Dursteler, who has lived in Gove for 35 years, took the plunge on Saturday to make her vote count in the Northern Territory election.

The German-born Ms

Dursteler was never able to vote in her homeland and needed to maintain her German nationality so that she could continue to easily visit her children in Berlin.

When she first arrived in Gove she fell in love with the place and has lived here ever since.

She still regularly visits her family in Berlin, but her heart is in Gove.

Becoming an Australian citizen in 2008 this is the first opportunity she has had to cast her vote.

“I am a virgin voter; there is always something you can do for the first time,” she said.

Returned for a second term, Labor’s Lynne Walker casts her vote on Saturday, but will now sit on the Opposition benches.

Change of Gov’t for the Territory

INDIGENOUS voters have voiced their discontent with the Labor Government by electing the CLP to power in the Northern Territory.

The CLP has 14 of the possible 25 seats.

Terry Mills (pictured), Leader of the CLP and Chief Minister-elect, said: “Traditional people have not been given proper respect.”

“The Indigenous population showed they were fed up with Labor and its policies and saw the CLP as a viable alternative.

“They have reacted to the federal Stronger Futures legislation, passed in June, which extends key aspects of the Howard government intervention across Northern Territory communities. It also strengthens welfare punishments for parents who repeatedly fail to send their children to school.”

Another factor in Labor’s demise is the local government reforms and the replacement of the old community government council model with Shires.

Labor senator for the Territory Trish Crossin, said: “I think you will find that for the first time in this nation’s history, in any state or territory, the outcome has been decided by people in the bush, indigenous people.”

Labor has held onto urban seats but two Ministers in the Henderson Government lost their seats, Malarndirri McCarthy and Rob Knight.

More than half the 230,000 population of the Territory live in Darwin where Labor remained firm.

Seven years ago they held 19 of the 25 seats so voters have voiced more than minor discontent.

About a third of the Territory population are Indigenous compared to just three per cent nation-wide.

SINCE the fire at the Gove Peninsula Surf Lifesaving Club (GPSLSC) earlier this year, the members have rallied to ensure their services to the public remained unchanged.

They have managed to do this and are now well on the way to seeing their new clubhouse become a reality.

The slabs have been poured and physical changes can be seen week after week.

Club president Greg Whelan said work is progressing very well on the surf club building.

“The whole slab has now been poured and Kowhai Constructions are getting ready for the building construction,” Mr Whelan said.

“At this rate we would hope to be finished by the end of September.”

This work is on top of the creation of additional

outdoor space with the new locally acquired outdoor seating and a freshen up of the bar area.

The lack of the building has not stopped the regular Friday night barbecues which are always popular.

Each Sunday morning the GPSLSC opens Town Beach during the dry season provided there are no stingers or crocodiles around.

They also have a very active Nipper program and are always training their members.

Midges biting around full moon TOP Enders and visitors to the NT are being advised to take precautions against a seasonal rise in mangrove biting midges three days before and after the full moon on Friday, August 31.

“Residents and visitors should avoid areas where midges breed or are active, especially during the hour on either side of sunrise and sunset from August 28 to September 3,” Director of Medical Entomology Peter Whelan said.

He warned that the highest number of mangrove biting midges occur between August and December around the full moon, although midges are also active around the new moon at lesser levels, and at reduced levels throughout the year.

“Biting midges are likely to be an appreciable pest problem all around the NT coast within 1.5 kilometres of the extensive areas of coastal mangroves where their major breeding sites exist,” he said.

“People near coastal areas around the NT especially newcomers and young children, need to take extra precautions against being bitten, as the saliva that midges inject when they bite contains chemicals that can cause pain, swelling and local reactions,” he said.

Mr Whelan said the one way to avoid being bitten is to cover

up with long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, socks and shoes and to apply DEET or picaridin-based repellents.

“Insecticide coils can offer some protection in sheltered areas.

Mosquito lanterns can offer very good protection for small localised areas.

“Insecticide barrier applications of bifenthrin to low screening plants, leaf litter and grass around houses can offer excellent protection for larger areas around residences and recreation areas.

“Do it yourself two-litre sprayer

kits of bifenthrin are available in most supermarkets and good barrier sprays can offer up to six weeks protection from both midges and mosquitoes,” he said.

“The area bitten can be extremely itchy. People should avoid scratching the bites and reactions because this can easily break the skin, introducing bacterial infections that can lead to unsightly sores.

“Soothing lotions may provide relief and ice packs can be applied to the site of stronger bite reactions, but a severe reaction may require medical advice.”

Help to clean up the Top End IT’S almost time for the Great Northern Clean Up and Clean Up Australia wants Gove residents to join the team and help clean up the Top End on September 14-16.

In 2011, more than 6200 volunteers across 156 sites removed an estimated 340 tonnes of rubbish.

Territorians put in a gold winning performance with an estimated 1056 volunteers removing over 51 tonnes of rubbish at 23 locations.

This year the Gove Scouts will be cleaning up at Buffalo Creek meeting at the Surf Club at 8.30am.

Members of the public are invited to come along and join them or to set up their own clean up site.

The Great Northern Clean Up was created in 2009 after feedback that March weather made it difficult for communities north of the Tropic of Capricorn to participate in Clean Up Australia Day. Since then the Northern event has gone from strength to strength and their aim is to beat last year’s participation by 10 per cent.

Ian Kiernan AO, founder and Chairman of Clean Up Australia, said the growth of the Great Northern Clean Up reveals the abundant community spirit and environmental commitment of Territorians.

“Clean Up events are not just about doing great things for the environment, they’re about getting involved in your local community, getting out and about with your neighbours and doing something rewarding,” he said.

“The Territory attracts tourists from around the world to its world-renowned beaches and waterways but unfortunately rubbish still threatens these environments. Preventing rubbish from entering our rivers, creeks and seas helps protect marine life from the deadly impact of plastics and other wastes.

Teenager is found supplying cannabis

TWO teenagers were observed acting suspiciously in Endeavour Square on Friday just after midday.

A 15-year-old Nhulunbuy youth was searched and found to be carrying three deal bags of what was believed to be cannabis and a quantity of cash.

The cash was seized by Police.

He has been referred to Youth Diversion for possessing and supplying an illegal substance.

His 16-year-old male companion was found to be carrying a tobacco-like substance which was not identified as cannabis.

New big boys’ toy for mine SOME of the men (aka big boys) working at the mine will be working with a new dozer.

The CAT D11 was unloaded off the barge last Thursday before a slow trip out to the mine.

It travelled along the conveyor belt track keeping it off road for much of the journey.

Travelling in first gear and at low speed all the way it was a slow trip along the 22 km from the barge to the mine.

To maintain public road conditions rubber was placed under the tracks for those sections.

The CAT D11 is a replacement for an existing piece of equipment.

Moving the machine over such a distance was a challenge to manage properly.

Traffic was managed during the section on the bitumen from the port to the overland conveyor as well as making sure the road surface was not damaged.

After that, the long haul down the conveyor started. The machine had to constantly have its track temperatures monitored to make sure they did not get too hot.

Additionally, every 20 minutes of tramming the machine required a 20-minute break to allow for the tracks to cool. A long but rewarding process for all.

MEMBERS of the cast of the upcoming Gove Arts Theatre production were at the markets on Saturday encouraging market goers to secure their seats for the show.

Dinkum Assorted will open at The Cell at the Captain Cook Community Centre Complex on September 14.

The show will be on September 14,15,20,21 and 22

with a matinee on Sunday, September 16 .

The closing night is already sold out.

Dinkum Assorted is set in a biscuit factory during WWII and the all-female cast has been rehearsing for the last three months to ensure they are all on cue.

Tickets are $30 each and children’s tickets are available for the matinee only at $20.

“The NT CLCs travel huge distances to offer outreach services to small and remote communities.

“Yet demand for free legal advice is just as strong in the south, major towns and remote communities.”

Darwin Community Legal Service Executive Director Caitlin Perry said that the Darwin CLC strived to meet demand beyond Darwin and the Top End, despite not being funded to work NT wide.

“We know we are the only general CLC in the entire NT, so we try very hard to make sure we offer some outreach services, but it’s getting harder,” she said.

“A major problem that our clients present with is income management and debt problems. People shouldn’t have to - and often simply can’t - travel for miles to receive advice and assistance about their rights.

“We call on the next NT Government, whoever it might be, to work to increase Territorians’ access to justice.”

Yirrkala Baby Show is on this weekend

MONDAY, September 3, will see the return of the Yirrkala Baby Show at Rika Park in Yirrkala.

This year there will be a special focus on Fathers (September 2 is Father’s Day) and on keeping our babies healthy and happy, marking the start of Child Protection Week.

The show is a collaboration between the Yirrkala Health Centre, FaFT (Families as First Teachers), the Miwatj Strong Fathers Strong Families (SFSF) program and the DCF Community Child Safety and Wellbeing Team, together with the help and support of Yolngu staff and friends from the Yirrkala area.

Every baby is beautiful and so every baby entered will get a prize, the show is not about picking just one baby but about honouring what is beautiful about every child and every family.

The Baby Show team would like to thank the Arnhem Club for their support in coming up with a healthy dinner for all the participants and their families.

Arnhem Land strongly represented in Deadlys

Ursula Yovich ARNHEM LAND artists have figured promiently in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Music, Sport, Entertainment and Community Awards, aka the Deadlys.

Among the finalists are Ursula Yovich and Rarriwuy Hick who are both finalists in the Female Actor of the Year category Other nominees from Arnhem Land include Janet Manyarryan and Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu (pictured right).

Actress Ursula Yovish who grew up in Maningrida is a well-known Aboriginal singer, songwriter and actor.

She is a member of the Black Arm Band and has performed in musicals, including The Sapphires and Magpie Blues, as well as the films - Jindabyne and Australia.

She has performed as a singer across Australia and internationally and appeared in The Sydney Theatre company’s production (in association with Bangarra Dance Theatre) of Bloodland.

Growing up with a Serbian father in her mother’s country she defied the odds to become one of Australia’s mostcelebrated performers.

Rarriwuy Hick is a professional dancer and actor who combines traditional Indigenous dance with contemporary styles.

She recently visited her mother, Janet Munyarryun, in Yirrkala.

Miss Hick has performed traditional dance all her life.

This year she has appeared in the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of Bloodland, a production which seeks to evoke the unenviable no-man’s-land

that so many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people find themselves trapped in.

This year, Rarriwuy appeared on Move It Mob Style, produced by Vibe Australia with support from the Australian Government through the Department of Health and Ageing.

She has also appeared in Wrong Skin, which played at the Sydney Opera House in 2010.

Wrong Skin was an Aboriginal version of Romeo and Juliet that was about love and the pressures faced by

remote Indigenous communities trying to maintain their identity and culture, while finding a place for their children in the modern world.

The Deadly’s is back for its 18th year at the Sydney Opera House on September 25.

And I look forward to not only holding the CLP and Terry Mills to account with their spendthrift election commitments but challenging them on some of their more bizarre promises, including the dismantling of the Banned Drinker’s Register and the creation of ‘prison farms’ to deal with problem drunks.

I will also be holding the new government to account to see Labor-funded initiatives delivered including the new crossing at the Goyder River and further upgrades to the Central Arnhem Road, new housing at Yirrkala and the upgrade to Gove Hospital’s A&E Department.

Finally, a huge thank you to my friends, supporters and family for their incredible hard work and support, before and during the campaign.

A PAIR of brolgas was spotted on Town Beach last Thursday morning.

They performed a dance before heading towards the sand dunes just around the point from Warrawuy.

The Brolga (Grus rubicunda), formerly known as the “Native Companion”, is a bird in the crane family.

The bird has also been given the name Australian Crane, a term coined in 1865 by well-known ornithological artist John Gould in his Birds of Australia.

The Brolga is a common gregarious wetland bird species in tropical and eastern Australia, well known for its intricate mating dance.

It is a member of the Gruiformes-the order that includes the crakes, rails, and cranes, and a member of the genus Grus.

The renowned ornithologist John Gould had given the species the name Grus australasianus and noted it to be widespread in the north and east of the country.

ROTARIANS have been out and about encouraging teams for the upcoming beach volleyball competition.

The competition is one of the major events on the annual calendar of the Nhulunbuy Rotary Club.

It will be held at Middle Beach on September 16 and Rotarians have been based outside Woolworths on Saturday mornings and will be there again this Saturday.

Entries close on September 1.

The family event saw 46 entries last year and the surf club is on call to patrol the beach for swimmers.

Children’s events are held on the beach under the supervision of the Gove Tennis Club while the more serious, and those just having fun, get into their volleyball games, The community event sees a number of clubs getting involved including the The Speedway who will be providing the food.

The Rotary Club will be operating the bar and Gove FM will be pumping out the music on the day.

The Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union made Brolga, a popular name derived from Gamilaraay burralga, the official name of the bird in 1926.

The Brolga, Sarus Crane (Grus antigone), and White-naped Crane (G. vipio) were seen as forming a natural group on the basis of similarities in calls in 1976. This was further confirmed by molecular studies of DNA. It is unclear which two of the three species are most closely related The population is estimated at between 20,000 and 100,000. The International Crane Foundation began a captive breeding population with three pairs of wild Brolga that were captured in 1972.

Brolga are non-migratory but do move in response to seasonal rains.

NHULUNBUY INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

There were many running competitions.

LAST Friday, August 17, Nhulunbuy High School students gathered on the school oval for the annual inter-house athletics carnival.

“We welcomed teams from Yirrkala Homelands and Yirrkala School, who joined our representatives from Roper, Latram and Giddies,” said Principal Frank Greene.

“What a great day we had with Latram running out overall champion house on the day. Another big winner on the day was the school spirit which was on public display.

“The encouragement and participation from students and staff was a pleasure to see and was noted by all visitors to the event.”

School team performs well at titles Local rugby club has strong * By NIKKI MAYER

IT has been a full on past six weeks at the tennis club.

After finishing the BP Gove Classic in May, it was preparation for the juniors to get ready to compete in Darwin in the NT School Sports Tennis Championships at the end of term 2.

Nine athletes had been training to represent their cluster in hope of also being selected for the NT Bruce Cup team.

Brendan O’Sullivan, Eytanhnyia Scott-Jones, Zachary Scott-Jones, Darcie Hockings, Anthony Miller, Jack Kirby, Tallis Naughton, Chloe Grieve and Luke Jardine had been training in readiness to do their schools, family and club proud.

The school sport event was played over the last three days of term 2. It was a fantastic three days of tennis and great sportsmanship behaviour from all athletes. It was the best team I have taken away in the 13 years of taking kids away for school sport. They were great fun but worked hard when they had to.

For some of them it was their first time away for school sport and also the first time they had been away from their parents for a long period of time. There were some disappointing results for some, but for others, they were shocked that they won games.

The team finished in 5th position and team member Eytahnyia Scott-Jones was named in the girl’s side for the Bruce Cup team and should find out this week if she has made the final cut.

Most of the team members stayed on to compete in the Darwin & NT Age Titles. This meant another eight days of tennis off the back of the school sport event.

The Darwin and NT Age Titles were a real test for the Gove athletes, as the minimum match format was best of three sets. All team members did extremely well.

Playing in his first tournament away from Gove and first time away from mum and dad, Luke Jardine was like a veteran. Very focused and wanting to win, and prepared to work hard.

Luke was runner up in the JDS Green Ball Singles. Luke only started playing tennis this year and has taken to it really well. Early in the year Luke impressed the Talent Development Coach, Pat Coburn, with his work ethic and attention to listen and perform outcomes.

Zachary Scott-Jones, has had a huge year already with traveling to tournaments in Perth, Darwin and Katherine, was also runner up in the 10&U boys singles. Zachary also has impressed the NT Talent Development Coach with his natural ability to play the game. Zachary is always a strong contender when he steps on the court and also won his first round in the 12 singles in the NT Age Titles.

The kids then had to back up again for the Darwin Age Titles. Some were getting a little homesick, or was it the parents missing the babies?

The Gove athletes were now wiser of the format for play and the toughness of their competitors and stepped it up a

notch with most of them gaining better results.

Zachary Scott-Jones won the 10 boys singles consolation draw over team mate Luke Jardine in a close game 6-4. Zachary was also runner up in the 10&U doubles.

Brendan O’Sullivan finally found his mojo after a disappointing first two events. Brendan worked much harder and found his swing line to make it to the doubles final in the boys 12&u. It was a great effort from Brendan and coach Nicky was pleased to see him finally make it to a final.

All players need to be congratulated for their hard work and great sportsmanship whilst away. As a tennis coach, I was pleased with the way the kids held themselves on and off the court and their parents should be proud.

The team flew home at the end of the event which finished at the end of the first week of the school holidays.

A GROUP of talented boys travelled to Sydney recently to compete in the Australian SchoolBoys’ rugby selections.

They did an excellent job for a team thrown together with little or no training or bonding.

Of the 23 boys from the Northern Territory, eight were from the East Arnhem Rugby club.

The boys played very well under some terrible conditions and, in particular, they tried hard even when they were sick.

The boys played against the Lloyd McDermott Indigenous side in their first game and where ahead at the end of the first half.

They tried to maintain the momentum from the first half but were unable to follow up with a win.

The same happened against South Australia where they were 23-0 at the end of the first half but a series of unanswered trys in the second half ended in a close finish.

Of our eight boys from East Arnhem, two got selected in the Australian Prime Ministers’ 15 team to play the visiting Tongan Schools team.

The players in the NT side were: Richard Ofa (NT & Aust PM’s 15); Jack Tourish (NT & Aust PM’s 15): Matt Tutini (NT); Robert Greenwood (NT); Rhys Regan (NT); Kane Tuhiwai (NT); Peter Mastin (NT) and Aeden Bryce (NT).

Four other boys were selected in the NT squad but could not go due to other commitments.They were: Thomas Pearce, Matt Hancock, William Pickett and Marshall Gurriwiwi.

Effectively we had 12 boys from the East Arnhem Region who were successful in gaining selection into the NT squad this year. This was the most we have ever had from a particular age division.

We now have the possibility of getting between eight to 10 players selected for Rep. duties with the U16 in September as well.

All bodes well for Rugby in the future for the East Arnhem Rugby club and the East Arnhem Region.

Players wanted for Country championships

By COL SNOWDEN THE East Arnhem Rugby Union is seeking players interested in competing in the upcoming NT Senior Rugby Union Country championships at tje Katherine showground on Saturday and Sunday, September 22 and 23.

The NTRU Country championships are in their inaugural year and will see teams from Alice Springs, Katherine, East Arnhem Shire, Jabiru, Litchfield and Palmerston compete.

East Arnhem Rugby Union has already nominated a team and is very keen to travel and then contest this tournament against the other country teams.

So far teams nominated include East Arnhem, the Lions, Pirates and Barbarians from Katherine.

Also sure to nominate are the Brahmans, Litchfield Swamp Dogs from Darwin’s rural area, Jabiru BushRatz, Palmerston Crocs B Grade and teams from Alice including Federals and Cubs.

The tournament is being held to select an NTRU Country team to play an NTRU City team as a ‘curtain-raiser’ to next February’s Australian Super Rugby trial match at Darwin’s Rugby Park Marrara.

The ACT Brumbies have been confirmed as one of the combatants with the

opponent yet to be finalised.

The tournament will also select an NTRU Country team to compete in Darwin on the Australia Day weekend in the Hottest 7’s competition which sees international, national and regional teams from all over competing for great prize money.

The NTRU Country championships will be held over two days as a roundrobin tournament comprising two pools.

The games are 20 minutes each way with unlimited interchange to assist in injury management and fatigue issues.

The East Arnhem Rugby Union is seeking interested players and believe that we have the basis of a very good and competitive team, a team good enough to win the championship and load the Country representative team with talent.

Previously the East Arnhem Rugby Union club has contested the Singapore CC International 7s (17 years) and has also won numerous U18 and U16 State titles in 15-a-side and also 7-a-side.

Two Nhulunbuy boys represent Territory at titles

TWO local lads have returned home after they were chosen to represent the Northern Territory in School Sport Australia U12 Rugby League championships.

Tom McGrath and Caleb Epiha travelled to Mackay for the championships which were held from August 4 -11.

They were selected to play for the NT in May during the NT School Sports 12 Years and Under Rugby League championships in Darwin.

The boys left Gove to travel to Darwin on August 1 and went into camp for two days with the rest of the NT team before travelling to Mackay.

One of the highlights for the boys (and girl) were meeting the Brisbane Bronco players while they were in transit at Brisbane airport.

They got lots of photos and signatures and put the kids on a real high.

Over the course of the week they played sides from ACT, NSW, WA and SA. Finishing in fourth position they then went into the cross-pool games to decide first place down to eighth place.

Their first cross-pool game was against the Queensland Invitational side which, if they had won, would have had them playing for first or second position.

They lost that game by a small margin.

They then met Victoria for third or fourth position. Unfortunately they didn’t win that game either but they came a credible fourth position overall out of the eight teams.

Queensland edged out the Queensland Invitational side as eventual winners of the competition.

Tom and Caleb both played extremely well throughout the tournament. A testament to their playing skills is that they haven’t played rugby league in Gove since the season finished last November.
