‘Over a year or so’ to fix road issues ROAD safety issues in Nhulunbuy which have been described as being provided “in a ad hoc manner” could be corrected in “over a year or so”. Town Board member Lyn Percic said: “Basically there are quiet a few hazards around town. Paths, signs etc have been put up in a ad hoc manner. “Probably, because they can get away with it .” Town Administrator Ross Theedom says: “The Corporation will now prioritise and program work and have it carried out over the next year or so.”
The commitment comes after recommendations by a senior officer from the NT Department of Lands and Planning who has inspected roads around Nhulunbuy. The safety of pedestrains on the roads around the school has been a constant concern for parents in Nhulunbuy. Confusion surrounding the pedestrian refuges in Chesterfield Circuit and Jasper Street was highlighted in an article in the Arafura Times in the October 26 edition last year when Police and the Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited had two different opinions on
what the road rules were. The NCL, at that time, said that, when the flags were out at the school crossing further down the road, the children had right of way. The Police said the pedestrians had to wait until a stop/go person stopped the traffic. In October, the Town Administrator Ross Theedom said he was considering moving the safety havens and was looking at other options. At the time Sergeant Rob Gordon said regardless of what he decided he needed to act quickly. Continued Page 4. >>
Suggested changes
The changes that have been suggested are: • Removal of the refuges in Chesterfield Circuit and Jasper Road; • Complete removal of the old crossing near the Primary School. It is visible despite it having been covered with bitumen; • Better signage around the school area. The signs are now non-compliant so we will be upgrading them to bring them into line with the Australian Road Rules. • A pathway in Thunderman Road to take people off the road itself. • Line marking at various points around the town including at Thunderman/ Chesterfield corner and Matthew Flinders/Melville Bay intersection. • New signs for the Taxi rank in Westal Street, which will limit the number of taxis at the rank to two. • Removal of several parking spots in Westal Street to provide a clear view for children and adults crossing to and from the pool. • Removal of some paths in Franklyn, Westal and Chesterfield that lead people nowhere or into dangerous situations.

Hairdresser finalist in business award A NHULUNBUY businesswoman was named last week as a finalist in the 2012 Telstra Northern Territory Business Women’s Awards Teresa Betts, owner of the New Look Beauty Salon & Selections Boutique, is a finalist in the Commonwealth Bank Business Owner category in these Awards. Mrs Betts said: “I know I had what it took to be a business owner and, although I didn’t have all the answers, I was going to give it a very good go and learn along the way.” One of the biggest challenges faced by Mrs Betts’s in business was buying her own hair and beauty salon in remote Nhulunbuy while completing an adult apprenticeship in hairdressing at age 29. She had to manage the operation, New Look Beauty Salon & Selections Boutique, while being supervised by her own staff until she became fully qualified. Her drive to succeed was fuelled, she said, by detractors in the mining town who doubted she would remain in business long, especially as she had no formal qualifications when she bought the business. The salon has flourished with Mrs Betts now employing 13 staff. Dedicated to helping others in the industry, she has just completed a Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessing and plans to use this qualification to work with local educational providers to make training opportunities available to the Nhulunbuy community. Kate McKenzie, Group Managing Director Telstra Innovation, Products and Marketing and Ambassador of the Telstra Business Women’s Awards, said the Awards were a celebration of the enormous diversity of amazing businesswomen in the Northern Territory. “For 18 years, the Awards have shone a spotlight on the achieve-

The innovation in ideas and technology that they reveal is vital to the future of the Territory’s economy,” Winners of the 2012 Telstra Northern Territory Business Women’s Awards will be announced at a gala luncheon on Tuesday, October 9, in Darwin. The Northern Territory winners proceed to the national finals of the Telstra Business Women’s Awards that will be announced in Sydney on November 21.

Memo from Lynne Walker to the Chief Minister . . .
‘Remember the Gas Task Force: It’s been operating since March’ MEMBER for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker (left) is wondering if NT Chief Minister Terry Mills (right) has had his head in the sand for the last six months, following his accouncement last week that the Country Liberals Government is committed to working with Pacific Aluminium and the Nhulunbuy community to find an alternative energy source which will allow the Gove operation to continue. Mrs Walker said the Gas Task Force has been operational since March and was an initiative of the Labor Government. “The reason why Pacific Aluminium Chief Operating Officer Duncan Hedditch is based in Darwin was to enable close proximity to this high-level group of government executives which included the under Treasurer and the head of the Department of the Chief Minister,” Mrs Walker said. “Paul Henderson, as Chief Minister,
was also closely involved but not an actual member of the task force. The focus was on exploring possible sources of gas within the NT which induced the Blacktip gas field in the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf, west of Darwin (which supplies Channel Island power station in Darwin) as well as lobbying the federal government for assistance around the construction of a gas pipeline into N.E. Arnhem Land.” Mr Hedditch said Pacific Aluminium welcomes the support from the Northern Territory Government to secure a gas supply for Gove Operations. “The aluminium industry is facing very tough market conditions. Pacific Aluminium looks forward to exploring options that would enable the alumina refinery to be converted from heavy fuel oil to gas,” he said. “Securing a gas pipeline to the North-East Arnhem Land region will also bring the further economic
development, including additional employment and training opportunities. “I would like to thank the Chief Minister and his government for their support.” Mr Mills said : “There is a clear role for Government in assisting Pacific Aluminium achieve its objective of securing a reliable and sustainable gas supply to power the Gove refinery. “Converting the Gove refinery to gas will significantly improve Pacific Aluminium’s economic and environmental position and underpin the long term operating life of the refinery. “Some work in this area has already been done, and the Country Liberals Government understands the importance of Pacific Aluminium to the East Arnhem, Northern Territory and national economies. “The Gove refinery contributes about $500million to the Territory’s Gross Regional Product every year of
which about $375 million goes into local service providers and suppliers. “But in addition to its impact on the general economy, the Gove facility is about people and any downgrading of existing operations could potentially devastate towns and communities in the East Arnhem region. “I have directed that the pipeline strategic action group report regularly to the Chief Minister and have included in the body a senior representative from my office. Further changes to its make-up will be announced in the near future. “The pipeline working party will: • Identify gas sources that could be used to power Pacific Aluminium’s Gove operation; • Develop mechanisms for using current PowerWater Corporation gas reserves; • Identify the investment required by Territory and Commonwealth
government to support the pipeline construction: and • Focus on the long-term sustainability of Nhulunbuy and the Entire East Arnhem region. “Key stakeholders the working party will consult with include Pacific Aluminium, PowerWater Corporation, the Commonwealth Government, Northern Land Council and East Arnhem Shire. “The strategic action group will meet for the first time on Friday.” Leader of the Opposition Delia Lawrie was in Nhulunbuy last week and said: “I am pleased Mr Mills is coming to grips with the task ahead. “There are many issues that need addressing including clearances from the Northern Land Council,” she said. “We had planned for gas to be available by the end of the year. “I urge him to get on with it and make it happen.”
School fete a sellout MONTHS of preparation by parents, students and staff ensured the Nhulunbuy Primary School fete was a great day for everyone. Money raised on the day will go directly to the school and its needs and about $10,000 was raised on Saturday. Part of this year’s fete included an historical display and past students came along to see what they, and others, looked like all those years ago. Set up in the library it provided some interesting comments. The lucky dips were the first to sell out and, by just after 1pm (the fete started at noon), several others, such as the tombolla and cake stalls, were also getting very low on stock. Cakes and plants were popular as was the art exhibition where many works were sold throughout the day. For those stopping for a cake
Mystery bottles were a hit.
and cuppa they also got to see the winning cakes and also the best decorated cakes which had been awarded their prizes. Popular also was the cent auction and the chook poo lotto although there were a few delays waiting for the chooks to identify a winner. The Teddy Bear’s picnic was a hit with the youngsters and the games on the oval kept the older children amused and occupied. The fete was also about encouraging parents and students to participate and there were many ‘manning’ the various stalls around the school. Students’ work was also on display in some of the classrooms. The fete was just another example of how communities such as Gove all work together to ensure successful events that benefit the whole community. This year 40 teams entered and the winners were Grinners who defeated Beach Bums 85 to 30. Organised annually by the Rotary Club, months of preparation ensure a successful event. Each year community or sporting groups help out to maker sure everything runs smoothly. Frank Willsdon from Pacific Aluminium officially opened the competition. Some 344 people played 100 games in the round-robin section before the best eight teams played off for a chance to play in the final. Children were kept occupied by Gove Tennis Club who organised activities including sand castle building and an egg-throwing competition. The Gove Peninsula Surf Lifesaving Club was again on hand to patrol the water for those wanting a dip between games. Many took to the water after they were eliminated. ‘Over a year or so’ to fix road issues << From Page 1. In July this year, Dr Theedom sought the services of a road-safety expert and presented the recommendations to the Town Board in August. “The NT Department of Lands and Planning’s Mr Aftab Abro, Manager Traffic in the Road Network Division, has inspected the roads around Nhulunbuy and made a number of recommendations,” Dr Theedom said. “These have been provided to the Nhulunbuy Town Board for consideration. The Town Board is in agreement with the suggested changes and would like the Corporation to implement them as soon as practicable. See panel on Page 1. >> “The Corporation will now prioritise and program this work and have it carried out over the next year or so,” Dr Theedom said. “The Corporation will also be looking at all road signage to ensure it complies. Any that do not will be replaced as part of the upgrade program. “The Corporation and Town Board appreciated the assistance of
the Department of Lands and Planning and Mr Abro. The Corporation now has a strategy moving forward and hopes to implement this strategy as quickly as possible,” Dr Theedom said. The Arafura Times contacted the NT Department of Lands and Planning and asked for some clarification regarding the recommendations. Mr Abro was unavailable for comment although a spokesman for the Department said they had no jurisdiction in Nhulunbuy as it was a private town. He said Mr Abro had given traffic engineering advice and it was up to the Corporation what they did with that advice in their precinct. He said it would be inappropriate for the Department to make any comment. When the Arafura Times contacted the Corporations works department engineer, Keith Weymes, he said that he had not yet seen the recommendations and all comments needed to come from Dr Theedom. Town Board member Lyn Percic said they agreed to the ‘professional’s’ recommendations. “They are based on National
Standards, keeping in mind our transient population, people coming from different states (and countries),” she said. “Remove refuges - these are not a national standard. The one on Jasper is actually situated in the bus stop. “The footpaths will remain to direct pedestrians to cross here, away from the corner. “School kids should be encouraged by their parents to cross on Jasper and then walk down to the school crossing. “It is very messy there with the driveway into the TAFE area. “The Zebra lines at the corner need to be covered properly; they are too visible and have potential to cause confusion. She said that in Thunderman Road, near the pre-school, there were too many signs and some markings on the road need to happen to direct traffic where to give way. Town Board member Lyn Percic said: “Basically there are quiet a few hazards around town. Paths, signs etc have been put up in a ad hoc manner. “Probably because they can get away with it .”

NEW steps have been put in place at the town pool to allow easier access for all swimmers. Manager of the Gove Aquatic Centre Rachel Verdel said she was delighted they had finally arrived and have been installed so all the users of the pool have easy access. “This will be great for our pregnant mums and also for people needing to get into the pool for physio,” Mrs Verdel said. “It is great they are here for the season and will benefit many pool users who found the regular steps too awkward to negotiate. “The graduated steps now give them a much-more convenient way of entering and leaving the pool.” The steps were installed by the Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited (NCL) last week. “Keith (Weymes) from the NCL depot has been great. He investigated the options and found these which are best suited to the diverse user groups at the pool,” Mrs Verdel said. The steps will allow all users easier access to the pool. If there are carnivals being held at the pool the steps can be easily removed.

Croc shot - police seek information
NT POLICE are calling for public assistance after a saltwater crocodile was found dead in Maningrida last Monday, September 10. Senior Constable Rebecca O’Brien said the crocodile was discovered by Police at Man River Crossing, approximately 60 km from the community. “One of our members made the gruesome discovery while travelling back to the community on Monday afternoon,” she said. “It appears as though the crocodile was shot dead. The tail of the crocodile had been cut off and its mouth was propped open with a stick.” NT Police are working in conjunction with Parks and Wildlife and members of the public are reminded that it is an offence under the Territory Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act to take or interfere with protected wildlife, including crocodiles. Any members of the public who observe any suspicious or illegal activity are encouraged to contact the Croc Management Unit on 0419 822 859 or Police on 131 444.

JUST about everyone looks forward to Fridays . . . but a surprise visitor to Nhulunbuy Christian College started the weekend fun a little early. Constable Ward Tucker called in at the school with a giant Zorb Ball weighing 60kg. Lunch-time games of cricket and basketball were immediately suspended as students lined up for a turn inside the enormous Zorb Ball. All students from Transition to Middle School Year 9’s laughed and rolled their way around the oval under the watchful eye of Constable Tucker. A few teachers were also seen testing their Zorb skills too. The Zorb Ball is just one of the ways the police force engage youth. Constable Ward also runs the Blue Light Disco in Darwin and out bush to get children of all ages involved. The experience really just confirmed that Nhulunbuy is a place where almost anything can happen and Fridays are indeed one of the best days of the week.

Rare rat spotted in Gove A RARE animal was the cause of some excitement last week although, at 4.30am, Cassie Duykers was concerned her neighbours may not have appreciated her dog’s incessant barking. Her dog, Misty, a female staffy, was raising the alarm at spotting a Black-footed Tree-rat in the early hours on Friday. Ms Duykers apologised to all her neighbours if her dog woke them. “I managed to get a couple of photos and we called Steve at Dhimurru and they collected him. “It is very rare to see one in Gove. Hope he pulls through OK as the poor thing didn’t look healthy.” Steve Roeger, from Dhimurru, said they are identified as ‘near threatened’ and declining populations are noted in WA and Queensland. “We rarely see them and we don’t think they are abundant in our area,” Mr Roeger said. “We know they have been recorded elsewhere in our IPA in recent times however. “They are nocturnal and secretive so would not normally be seen even though adults are very large about the size of a ringtail possum or a biggish cat.” The Black-footed Tree-rat Mesembriomys gouldii is one of Australia’s largest rodents. The spectacular creature, perhaps the Australian equivalent of a squirrel, inhabits tropical woodlands and open forests in coastal areas of the Kimberley in Western Australia; the Top End of the Northern Territory and the east and west coastal areas of Cape York Peninsula. Early distribution records suggest that populations have contracted from southern and more inland areas of the NT, around Daly Waters and the lower McArthur River in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The species is considered to be uncommon to rare in the Kimberley and Queensland and still common but patchily distributed in the NT. The Black-footed Tree-rat is nocturnal, sheltering during the day in tree hollows, pandanus stands, or even under the roofs of buildings. Little is known of their diet. Analysis indicate that fleshy and hard fruits and large seeds are a major food item, supplemented by grass
and measures of cholesterol, blood glucose and iron. For the first time, the ABS will directly measure obesity and blood pressure levels, as well as nutritional status and chronic disease. By combining the self-reported information together with the biomedical samples, a more complete picture of the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples will be available. HOSTED BY

gardening expert, believes the challenge will be a great chance for kids to discover the amazing natural wonders in their own backyards. “No matter where you are in Australia, from the tropics to the outback and everything in between, young people only need to look to their own backyards to learn about nature and see how plants grow. Getting involved in a project like this will give kids a genuine appreciation for the natural environment around them,” she said. Yates and Junior Landcare expect to see a range of themes, which could include: a thriving herb garden that is used in the family’s cooking; a community garden where neighbours grow and share their produce; a garden that has been hit by floods and in the process of rehabilitation; a prized bed of roses that requires
Abby and Maddy working on their entries.
THE largest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health survey has been started by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The survey will improve the knowledge of the health issues affecting this group of Australians. This survey will expand on the 2004-05 survey by increasing the number of participants by 30 per cent, collecting new information on exercise, diet (including bush foods)

Landcare challenges kids on ‘your backyard’ YOUNG green thumbs are being challenged by Yates and Junior Landcare as they launch a kids’ environmental photo and video challenge Whether it’s a farm, a suburban veggie patch or an apartment balcony herb garden, Yates and Junior Landcare are asking kids around Australia, “How does your backyard grow?” The 2012 Yates Junior Landcare Backyard Challenge is getting kids to answer this question with a short film or series of photos, allowing them to showcase the unique aspects of their local environment. The challenge is a fantastic opportunity for young people to explore their backyards, learn how plants grow, and share what they have learnt with other kids and the wider community. Public service under review THERE has been a major review of public service positions by the NT government as Chief Minister Terry Mills makes a number of changes. Mr Mills, announced a number of new appointments to key positions in the Northern Territory Public Service. “We need a strong, efficient and effective public service to deliver the new Government’s key priorities of law and order, strengthening our economy, growing our unique lifestyle and reducing the cost of living,” Mr Mills said. “For most public servants, I expect the new arrangements to have a positive impact on their day- to-day work. “Today’s decision brings the establishment of 33 agencies from the existing 23. I remain convinced that the community can only progress if it has a vibrant, engaged and strong public service, and our challenge is to create it.”

I WAS really pleased to host a two-day visit for new Opposition Leader Delia Lawrie last week as she makes her way around the Territory’s remote regions following the election. We managed to touch base with a number of organisations and headed out with our swags to make an overnight visit to the M rthakal homeland of Mata Mata. A born-and-bred Territorian and daughter of former independent politician Dawn Lawrie, Delia is just as astute and assertive in Opposition as she was in Government and I look forward to working closely with her for another four years as Labor gears up for the next election. ARTS
Dinkum Assorted’s message relevant now as well as then By MARJO HALLOWELL IT WAS hard to pick who was having the most fun at the Gove Arts Theatre’s opening night last Friday night. GAT is celebrating 40 years of productions this year and Dinkum Assorted is their second play for the year. The all women cast range in ages from 15 to 60+ and the range is almost as great between the experience of the actors. First-timers and seasoned performers
could not be distinguished from each other as all were in top form last Friday for the shows opening. Set in war time Warrabadanga, the small country town is threatened with the closure of a biscuit factory - (some local undertones there) which will impact on the whole town. As well as having the audience in stitches there were also some poignant moments throughout the play as a variety of issues were addressed.
The ladies had been rehearsing for a number of months and their work had paid off with excellent performances from the entire cast. Two of the younger players, Shenayde Martin and Tara Doyle-Thompson, put in stellar performances. Without giving too much away - I would hate to run into Grace (Wendy Troe) on a dark night. Fortunately first-aid techniques have improved somewhat since the ARP days
featured in Dinkum Assorted. Laughter is said to be the best medicine and, if you were relying on the ARP ladies to make you feel better, you would be more likely to laugh yourself back into health than benefit from their rescuscitation techniques. As always, the actors are only as good as their support team. In a community the size of Nhulunbuy, it’s “many hands make light work” and the list of thanks on the program show
just how many people were involved in making this production such a success. The show was produced by Shelley Martin and directed by Barbara White with Bernice Cox and Wendy Troe being assistant directors. It may have been set in WWII Australia but there are many issues that can be related to life today. If you haven’t got your ticket yet Saturday is sold out, and Friday only had one or two seats left so be sure you get your seats for Thursday’s performance.

MUSICIANS from Yirrkala were among some of the Territory’s most-talented young performers who took part in the biggest performing arts showcase Shine, which began last Wednesday. A record number of students participated in three nights of spectacular performances for this year’s Beat Festival, September 12-14, which is now in its 33rd year. The Yirrkala band Moeity performed Hands Up on the packed program. The band won the Battle of the Bands earlier this year and also took out the National Indigenous Music School Band Award. Band members are Justin Emmerton, Marshall Guruwiwi, Dimotheya Burarrwanga, Yirrnga Yunupingu, Mabo Yunupingu, Datji Mununggurr and Butjarri Burarrwanga. The boys sang World Turning Right with the choir in a very powerful piece with words and music by Witiyana Marika and Mandawuy Yunupingui. Dimotheya was also the soloist in Djomula performing the song written by Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu with the choir, orchestra and dancers. Marshal was a soloist in the Blacfella Whitfella piece. orchestra with NT Music School teacher from Nhulunbuy, Tim Webb, on bass guitar. Students from Alyangula and Galuwinku were also performing on stage. Andy Mison, Principal NT Music School, Chairman of the Beat Foundation and Director of the Beat Festival, said it was exciting to have an event that showcased the hard work of all NT schools. “This is the biggest event we’ve had and it’s a real credit to the teachers, staff and students who have worked so hard to bring it all together,” Mr Mison said. “It is the culminating event for arts programs running in schools throughout the year.” More than 1100 students from across the NT have spent hours in rehearsals for choirs, dance troupes, instrumental ensembles, circus acts and solo performances. Schools from Arnhem Land, Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine, Alice Springs, Central Australia, Tiwi Islands, Groote Eylandt and other remote parts of the Territory came together at the Darwin Entertainment Centre. “Many senior students performed for assessment as part of their NT Certificate of Education,” Mr Mison said. WATERSLIDE DAY AT THE GOLF CLUB By ESTHER RIKA GOVE Country Golf Club’s new manager Jamie Henderson was impressed with the organisation and running of the recent Junior Golf waterslide day, held on September 9. “It was great seeing the kids and those not so young, having fun sliding 50 metres down the slope of the 7th tee onto the mini 3-par junior course. You wouldn’t see this
at any other Club in the country, as they wouldn’t allow children to run amuck on the course,” said Jamie. This great junior golf fundraising event is unique to Gove and the smiles on everyone’s faces, said it all. Families relaxed in the great atmosphere of the club, enjoying a cool drink with a sausage sizzle, face painting and icy cups for the kids. The Father’s Day Raffle was also

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) You may be a little surprised by some recent comments. Your friends will soon be following your advice, however. Romance. Djerrkura to head home to Gove WESTERN Bulldogs forward Nathan Djerrkura has quit the club and the AFL to return home to Gove, afl.com.au reported on the weekend. The 23-year-old has played 25 AFL games since being taken by Geelong with pick 25 in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft. After being traded from Geelong for pick 58 in 2010, Djerrkura played 21 games and kicked eight goals in his two seasons with the Bulldogs. The retirement comes as a surprise, with Djerrkura seemingly a part of future plans with the Dogs after playing 13 games in 2012 - including eight of the last nine. “My decision to retire from AFL football and return home after 10 years away was a difficult one but one I feel comfortable with,” he said. “I have given the best part of my life, wholeheartedly, to playing AFL football and have had some terrific experiences. “But being away from my family, community and the cultural responsibilities I hold, are reasons
enough to head home.” The Age reports the 23-yearold already runs youth leadership workshops in Gove. The newspaper reports Nathan as saying: ‘’My decision to retire from AFL football and return home after 10 years away was a difficult one but one I feel comfortable with,’’ he said. ‘’The Western Bulldogs have been terrific to me throughout my time here. I know the club is heading

in the right direction under Brendan and I want to thank the club, my teammates and especially Brett Goodes for his counsel and friendship.’’ James Fantasia, the Bulldogs’ football manager, said Djerrkura had made a strong impression in his two years at the club and they had mutually agreed to part ways. ‘’You could never have questioned his commitment, but he’s obviously come to a point in his own mind where he thinks it’s time for him to move home, and we respect that and wish him all the best,’’ he said. ‘’I think it’s played on his mind a bit. “He always knew there would be a time when he would want to go back to his family and to give a little more back from a community and cultural point of view. “He’s not someone who makes rushed decisions, he’s given this a fair bit of consideration and he was certainly very well regarded around the footy club and very popular amongst the guys.’’

Netball girls perform well in Sydney A SQUAD of netballers from East Arnhem spent a week in Sydney last week. T h e 1 5 Yo l n g u schoolgirls from Yirrkala, Gunyangara and Gapuwiyak returned to Gove last Tuesday after a hectic schedule which saw them not only take part in coaching clinics but also take part in a number of school visits, healthy lifestyle activities and daily educational learning. There had been a netball clinic in April and since that time each girl has achieved and attendance rate of over 85 per cent. The trip was made possible by Anglicare, Miwatj Health and the Gove Netball club and the three communities which the girls proudly represented. The trip was an outstanding success and Kevin Bird from Miwatj Health said: “The experience that we all had, will no doubt become a part of these young ladies

developing into strong young Yolngu women in the future.” There were eight activity oriented parts of the trip which focused on health, mind, heart, soul, spirit, culture and safety. “The girls coming home were different from those who left.
‘Any port in a storm’ race THE Runners North half marathon is attracting runners who have competed in International marathons. Arian Pearson competed in the New York Marathon last year and Jamie Wunungmurra competed in the Boston Marathon. Both were participants in the Robert de Castella Indigenous Marathon Project. Justin Gaykamangu, from Ramingining, who is training for this year’s marathon under the IMP, is also hoping to be participating. Runners North contacted the IMP to encourage Indigenous participation. The half Marathon, being held on October 6, will be another step for Justin towards his goal. He is training for the New York marathon which will be held four weeks after the Gove event. Justin is keen to use the event as a lead up race to the marathon. Justin, and the rest of this year’s IMP squad, will be travelling to Alice Springs this week to take part in their 30km test events, with the final team to travel to New York selected shortly after. Arian and Jamie are both from Yirrkala and Arian is hoping to enter a team into the event. The marathon will start at the Gove Aquatic Centre (GAC) at 6am. The event will cater for both individuals and teams of up to four runners and there is a major spot prize of a one hour joy flight for up to seven passengers. Other activities have been organised at the GAC and food and drinks will be available after the event. The giant inflatable water slide will be in use from 9am to noon.
By NEAL BAULCH THE weather for race four of the Melville Bay series was almost identical to the previous race, providing a 10 to15 knot breeze, a lovely sky and a pleasant sea. By the time briefing came around there were three boats that signed on for the race - Dean on Everly Blue, Lee on Waitere and Pat on Sans Souci. As I set the course earlier in the week, it became apparent that every mark was required to be rounded to port. This epiphany resulted in the birth of ‘any port in a storm race’. At sign on, all race entrants received a port package, containing one highly expensive bottle of port and some plastic shot glasses. As each mark was rounded, all crew except the captain, were required to partake in a shot of port. Excluding the start and finish lines there were eight marks, here forth, to be known as port reminders. As Waitere and Sans Souci made there way to the start line, those onboard became anxious as the start time drew near, with no sign of Dean on Everly Blue. It
They came back with much more confidence and self assurance,” he said. He thanked all those who assisted to ensure the program was a success increasing the awareness of healthy lifestyles for a better future. Tori Standen, campus bookings
coordinator at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence, said it had been a pleasure to have had the girls stay with them. “We would like to wish each and every one of the them all the best for the future and hope to see them at the Centre again,” she said.

became evident as the race began without him, that after the issuing of the port package, he must have decided that there would not be any sailing undertaken on his watch this day, and casually spent time down below. I’m sure it was no brown paper bag scene. With the first leg to windward, Sans Souci managed to hold off Waitere and did so until the last mark before the finish. For some unknown reason, Sans Souci had a mind of her own and headed straight for the finish line after rounding Preston buoy, forgetting all about half tide rock until she saw Waitere heading in a slightly different direction. A quick tack, but it was too little too late, as Waitere took out line honour’s and a well-deserved first place. A great piece of sailing from Lee and crew and it was a pleasure to see. (The port had nothing to do with it). We look forward to the next race on September 23, and then there will be a three week break until the final race for the series on October 14. See you all soon.

GAFL GRAND FINAL PREVIEW to decide the BEST TEAM in ARNHEM LAND
GOPU v NGUYKAL at Yirrkala By HAMISH SIMPSON GOPU’s victory in Saturday’s GAFL preliminary final will see them battle it out with Yirrkala’s determined Nguykal outfit to decide the best team in Arnhem Land. Nguykal have certainly been the massive improvers in 2012. Des O’Sullivan and Graham Mununggurr have moulded an energetic bunch of footballers into a sharp and resolute outfit. They have the firepower up forward with the likes of Lapsie Mununggurr and Rranga Mununggurr. Ricardo Mununggurr,
who plays in a unique and powerful manner that is almost impossible to stop when he is ‘on’, will be another force to be reckoned with. Gopu will have bad memories of his abilities when he kicked nine goals straight to single-handedly sink them in the 2009 grand final when he was playing for Djarrak. Their midfield has also been bolstered by Robert Clements’s strong inside work that allows the likes of Gurrna Mununggurr and Elcho’s Ernice Dhamarrandji to show their skill outside the congestion. The story of the day could see
Damien Djerrkura, the founder of the Nguykal team, walk away with another premiership medallion. His now aging body has repelled many an opposition attack over the years and he will again be leading the double blues with characteristic sportsmanship and passion. The match looms and an epic battle and I encourage everyone to get down to Yirrkala for a full day of exciting football. The women’s competition has been an outstanding success this year. Numbers have been growing
week by week and the skill improvement shown by the ladies has been outstanding. This weekend will be the fifth and final match for the year. What started as a one-off event has developed into a thriving competition. NOMINATIONS
Name: Contact details: By HAMISH SIMPSON SATURDAY saw the GAFL preliminary final played between Gopu and Djarrak at Yirrkala oval in absolutely delightful conditions. These two teams have contested the last four grand finals so there was no lack of experience on either side. After injuring his knee the previous week, Gopu’s veteran captain Danny Bromot was a doubtful starter. He was unable to assume his normal midfield role and played
in the key forward post instead. His first quarter of football was outstanding as he managed to kick five of Gopu’s six, first-quarter majors. In an excellent quarter of football Djarrak were also held goalless. Djarrak, coached by Richie Seden and Vern Patullo, have proven their superior fitness and their fighting qualities in the last month of football. They have finished very strongly in all their matches, with the previous week’s elimination final being an excellent example.
They trailed Baywarra by 28 points with 15 minutes remaining in the final quarter yet were able to steamroll them in a thrilling finale so Gopu were bracing for a battle. The second quarter was testament to this form as they banged on five straight goals, through the classy Longy Maymuru and Michael Mununggurritj. Gopu’s backline, led by the young guns Donnga Maymuru and Marshall Gurruwiwi, again stood strong in the third term allowing just one Djarrak goal whilst the bigger bodies of Uray
Small and Gapan Yunupingu in Gopu’s forward line were proving a handful, kicking three goals with the wind to take a lead of 76 to 39 heading into the last quarter. The final quarter was an even contest with Djarrak’s Sebastian Wanambi and Gopu’s Marcus Maymuru displaying some exquisite Yolngu skill and athleticism through the midfield. The final score saw Gopu hold onto their six-goal advantage and run out convincing winners 102 to 63 to reach the grand final against Nguykal.
