Abducted woman released as Police close in
NHULUNBUY Police have safely located a woman who was believed to have been abducted in Nhulunbuy when she went for her usual morning walk at around 5.30am on Monday. Thirty-year-old Victoria Turner, of Feldegg Avenue, the woman feared to have been abducted, sparked the search when she failed to return from her walk. Police are still looking for a vehicle of interest in the alleged abduction, a 2008 white Toyota Troop Carrier with NT registration 992306, believed to be stolen.
Superintendant James O’Brien said the circumstances around the abduction are still sketchy but Victoria Turner was in police care on Monday afternoon. “Police were utilising a helicopter to search the area for the vehicle of interest. “The helicopter spotted the suspect vehicle approximately 30km from the township, and, as the chopper circled the vehicle, the occupants released Mrs Turner from the car and sped off,” he said. “Police and an ambulance crew responded immediately and I am very
BREAKING NEWS pleased to confirm that police have since taken Mrs Turner into care. She is currently being treated for injuries sustained in the attack. “Major Crime detectives from Darwin have been deployed to Nhulunbuy to investigate. Detectives will be following up all lines of inquiry and I anticipate they will be speaking with Mrs Turner soon. “We are eager to speak to anyone
who may have any information about the 2008 white Toyota Troop Carrier with NT registration 992306 and the alleged offender(s) involved in this incident,” said Superintendent O’Brien. Police continue the search for the vehicle of interest and are calling for witnesses who may have seen this vehicle in the area to come forward and call Police (131444) or Crime Stoppers (1800 333 000).

NHULUNBUY aquarium industry pioneer Barbara Koennecke, Northern Territory winner of the 2012 The Rural Industries R&D Corporation (RIRDC) Rural Women’s Award was congratulated for her efforts as part of the national award gala dinner at Parliament House last week. “Barbara is doing such great work through seafood industry groups and engaging with other women in the Top End, and I congratulate her on being among this year’s finalists,” said Craig Burns, RIRDC’s Managing Director. All seven state winners gathered in Canberra where SA viticulturist Mary Retallack, of the Adelaide Hills region, was named the national winner, receiving her award from Joe Ludwig, Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Mary’s award-winning project involves establishing a website for
‘Women in Wine’ to provide support and skills development opportunities for women in the viticulture sector. Catherine Marriott, of Kununurra, was announced as runner-up for her work in the beef industry and live export awareness activities. The 2012 RIRDC Rural Women’s Award was announced in front of more than 250 industry leaders, politicians and special guests at Parliament House. The Award identifies and rewards women’s contribution to primary industries and rural communities by providing financial assistance, mentoring, resources and support via its nation-wide network of business and community leaders for selected state winners. Barbara, Mary Retallack and all the state winners have a busy year ahead of them, as they implement their vision and plans for developing
the potential of rural and regional communities and industries. Barbara is the Principal of Arafura Aquatic Fish Pty Ltd, one of the professional aquarium businesses in the Northern Territory. She has made a significant contribution to the development of the industry through the NT Seafood Council, Primary Industry Training Advisory Council, Women without Boundaries network and other industry organisations. As part of the state Award, Barbara receives a $10,000 bursary and will use this to continue her work with Darwin Aquaculture Centre to support improved husbandry practices and reproduction in the giant clam industry, as a sustainable food source for the indigenous population. “I’m planning to use the bursary to travel to Vanuatu to learn from
their research into the restocking of giant clams,” said Barbara. Barbara has just spent a week in Canberra participating in the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) course prior to the national winner announcement. Mr Craig Burns said Barbara has a strong and positive vision for the future of rural Australia. “As a finalist of this award Barbara exemplifies the unique leadership traits of passionate rural Australian women. We commend her for the remarkable contribution she is making to the aquaculture industry and her community,” Mr Burns said. “We look forward to celebrating the achievements of Barbara and the other finalists at the national Award dinner and watching her develop as a leader in primary industries in the years to come.”

Sacked - but Olga remains committed By MARJO HALLOWELL
DESPITE being sacked last week, the Northern Territory’s former Coordinator General for Remote Services went ahead with a series of public briefings about her annual report, a deciscion welcomed by Shadow Minister for Indigenous Policy Lynne Walker. Ms Walker welcomed Olga Havnen’s decision to go ahead and said it showed she was not deterred by the CLP’s decision to sack her. “She was holding the public meetings to discuss the findings of her report on spending in remote communities at her own cost,” Ms Walker said. “I am impressed with the decision and I have also met with Ms Havnen and have been equally impressed with the quality of her work. “Ms Havnen has focused on what has been working, with insightful recommendations for real improvements - moving on from the ‘blame game’ that that has often undermined real improvements. “Terry Mills said he believes the CLP Government can fix the problems that have plagued Territory Indigenous communities. An independent role assessing and recommending the best use of tax payers funds is crucial. Ms Walker said the recommendations made in Ms Havnen’s recent report are based on principles shown to work. “We can see that in the health sector where the previous Labor Government had made significant progress towards meeting National Closing the Gap targets,” she said. “Ms Havnen’s work also highlights important
policy gaps that need urgent attention, like issues affecting young Indigenous men. “It is unbelievable that Alison Anderson is more interested in having her own way without independent review and promoting more grog and mayhem in our remote communities. “The shameful sacking of Olga Havnen is depriving Territorians of independent scrutiny of government work at all levels,” Mrs Walker said. Ms Havnen volunteered her time to deliver the first public briefing in Darwin last Thursday, followed by sessions in Alice Springs, Katherine and Tennant Creek. She invited the public to hear her findings on how government money is being spent on services in the bush. “I was well paid in that role, so if it means spending some of my money to do these things, that’s fine,” she said. “I am happy to do that.” Ms Havnen’s report highlighted a lack of transparency about the billions of dollars in Commonwealth and Territory funds being spent in Aboriginal communities. Just days after she delivered the report, the Territory government abolished her position saying the co-ordinator’s responsibilities would be taken over by a departmental chief executive. “I guess I feel like I have a personal responsibility to provide information back to the people and organisations that assisted in the compilation of the report,” she said. “They provided a lot of information, a lot of data, and I think there was a level of interest in what the report had to say and what it found.” She used the meetings to explain why it is

Two rescued after boat sinks By MARJO HALLOWELL
2012 Northern Territory
Disability Services Awards
TWO old school mates were rescued after their boat sank last Wednesday, July 11. Jeff Murray and Jason Reedy, who were out for a fishing trip, were in their tender (dingy) fishing in the mangroves at Ingliss Island when they spotted that their boat was listing at the stern (rear). They immediately returned to the boat and it sank within minutes of their return so they went ashore. The 26ft Blackwatch Flybridge Cruiser was being taken on its first big outing - a three-day extended fishing trip. Mr Murray said the EPIRB was triggered as the vessel sunk at about 4.30pm. “I had the GPS EPIRB unit as recommended by Jeremy Chrzanowski after his incident (last November),” he said. “While leaving the vessel I grabbed the EPIRB and a couple of other essential items, and triggered the EPIRB.” A fixed-wing ‘plane in the area was tasked by emergency services to look for the boat from which the activation occurred, and Mr Murray said it was about an half an hour before they were spotted. The pilot spotted the boat 600 metres from the shore and the two men on the beach. A helicopter from Jayrow Helicopters was dispatched from Gove Airport to pick up the men. They were taken back to the Gove airport where Kelly Murray, who was called out of a meeting to improve safety on the water, was waiting. The vessel was salvaged by Arafura Sea Charters and returned to Gove on Saturday. Mr Murray wanted to extend thanks to those who assisted in the rescue. “Thanks to the ‘chopper pilot and co-pilot who attended the scene and all of the people involved with the co-ordination of the rescue,” he said. Officer-in-charge of Nhulunbuy Police Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said the men had an EPIRB on board and the signal raised the alarm. “The ‘plane flying in the vicinity was able to spot the men on the beach and the helicopter was able to pick them up without much delay,” he said. “This was an excellent example of how having the right equipment on board has saved many hours of searching.” Snr Sgt Muldoon was also at a meeting to help improve boat safety as local groups discussed what could be implemented to assist emergency services to locate boats that were overdue. The next meeting will be at the Walkabout Lodge at 5pm on Wednesday, July 25, for feedback on some of the ideas put forward at the first meeting and possible solutions.

Sex Offenders Bill to be reintroduced ATTORNEY General John Elferink has re-affirmed his commitment to reintroduce the Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders) restraint bill into Northern Territory Parliament. Mr Elferink said the Country Liberals Government is committed to protecting the safety of all Territorians. Legislation rejected by the Northern Territory Parliament last year will
be re-introduced into Parliament later this year. “The legislation will allow the Supreme Court to place an order on a high-risk inmate convicted of a sexual offence to indefinite detention,” Mr Elferink said. “This is a public safety measure that I believe is necessary to protect children across the Northern Territory.
“The legislation will require the Attorney General to apply to the Supreme Court for a Public Protection Order which will allow the prisoner to be kept in jail beyond the limits of their sentence. “The Supreme Court will have to be persuaded by the Attorney General that there is a high chance the prisoner will re-offend.”

Body of missing bike rider found POLICE have located the body of a missing man near the East Alligator River. Acting Superintendent Nathan Finn said a search helicopter located the body of James Browne on Friday, about 2.5km north-west of where his quad bike was located on Thursday. “Police conducted an extensive search for the 23-year-old man since he was reported missing on Thursday morning, however he was located deceased in heavy mangroves at around 2:30pm adjacent to the East Alligator River,” A/Supt Finn said. “It appears the man left his quad bike when it became bogged and continued walking along the river.” An extensive air and land search for the missing man was conducted in the vicinity of Mount Borradaile and Waidaboonar outstation, about 40km from Oenpelli. Members from the Territory Response Group, local Police from Oenpelli and Jabiru and volunteers from Northern Territory Emergency Services used helicopters, quad bikes, motorbikes, cars and foot-search teams to locate Mr Browne. A/Superintendent Nathan Finn said Mr Browne was reported missing to Police on Thursday morning and was last seen about 10’clock on Wednesday night, asking for directions at the Mount Borradaile Safari Camp. “On Wednesday afternoon, Mr Browne left Darwin with two friends with the intention of going hunting near the Waidaboonar outstation overnight,” said A/ Superintendent Finn. “Sometime after passing through Oenpelli and just before dark, Mr Browne was dropped off with a red Suzuki King Quad bike and continued along a few tracks in the area alone.
“During this time his two friends travelling in the car have lost sight of the quad bike and continued to drive around the area in an attempt to listen for the quad engine noise. The men failed to locate Mr Browne and remained at the location overnight due to a flat battery. “Mr Browne was reported missing to Police at 10am on Thursday and local Police, Rangers and NTES volunteers conducted land and air searches.” A/Superintendent Finn said: “Park Rangers, NT Emergency Service Volunteers and Police from the Territory Response Group and local stations all assisted tirelessly with the search. “I’d also like to thank the assistance from members of the Oenpelli community and especially members of the man’s family and friends.” During the search there were two helicopters used, six quad bikes, 10 vehicles and more than 30 people searching on foot. Police will now prepare a report for the Coroner.
EARS needs more sponsors to ensure safety in remote areas THE East Arnhem Remote Safety group is still on the lookout for sponsors for the signs they are planning to put up throughout the area. So far Gove Tackleworld and Outdoors and Gove Operations Pacific Aluminium have come up with funding towards the signs promoting safety for those heading out onto the water or into the bush. The signs are being made locally and Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation will erect those within their area. The group hopes to get half a dozen signs up to highlight the need for taking safety equipment and advising others of their intended destinations. Trip sheets and letter boxes are part of the signs and should someone or a group not
return by the time they are expected back Police and Emergency services can access this information and at least have a point at which to start the search. It will also let the emergency services know how many people are on vessels should they not return on time. The signs will also indicate the number of people rescued each year by the emergency services. As part of EARS the Nhulunbuy Rotary Club has donated funds to establish an emergency channels recording system. This is in the process of being installed and should be operational by the end of the month. Anyone who is able to assist with sponsorship is asked to contact Snr Sgt Brendan Muldoon (8987 1333).

Open speed limits could return to NT 3 FOR
Jacobs Creek Core Range 750ml
OPEN speed limits could be restored to outback Northern Territory roads within a year, a senior government minister says. A maximum speed limit of 130km/h was announced by the former Labor government in late 2006. The Country Liberals, who have opposed the speed restrictions since they came into force in January, 2007, returned to power in August and NT Attorney-General John Elferink said open speed limits could be revived within a year despite some evidence showing a link with road fatalities. “We certainly haven’t ruled that out,” Mr Elferink said ahead of a meeting with his federal and state counterparts recently. “The open speed limits have been controversial but, in truth, we are a territory which enjoys certain liberties and freedoms but nothing, nothing at all about an open speed limit says that a person can drive dangerously. “What it means is we trust drivers’ judgement to drive in a safe manner suited to the road conditions.”

THIS week is Australian Carers Week and it will run from October 14 to 20. In Australia there are about 2.6 million unpaid carers and this is a week set aside to acknowledge their commitment and devotion to their work. Carers Week is is a time across the nation that we can take the time to treat the carers we know with some extra care and attention. Carers provide family and friends with a disability or mental illness, chronic medical condition, terminal illness or are frail aged. They include parents caring for children with an intellectual or physical disability, school kids who have to support their chronically ill parent or sibling and partners of
Measles alert for the Northern Territory
people with mental illness Unpaid caring is a hugely important role and a big responsibility. It is therefore essential that unpaid family carers receive effective support and recognition for their
caring role. What’s more, it’s important that Australians realise that at some stage of their lives, they too are likely to become a carer for a family member or require care themselves.
THE Centre for Disease Control (CDC) has issued an alert for measles following a second case of measles in the past fortnight. A young child who was infected in Darwin and this follows the case of measles in an interstate traveller a short time ago. Centre for Disease Control Acting Director Dr Steven Skov explained that the child had only been in Darwin around the time of infection. “Measles is highly infectious so it is likely that more Territorians who are not immune may fall ill as a result of contact with either of these cases.” Dr Skov said. “This might occur over the next two to three weeks. Measles starts with fever, cough and red eyes with the blotchy rash developing two to four days later. “Measles can be a very serious illness with severe effects and it is important that the public is aware so that the spread can be minimised.” The measles vaccine is a free vaccine and is available from your community health centre and most general practitioners.

Yolngu Nations call on Australian Government to stop ‘the bullying’ BY MARJO HALLOWELL THE second annual Yolngu Nations Assembly (Yolnguw Makarr-Dhuni) met over the weekend to discuss current and future governance issues affecting their people and called for a stop to the “bullying” by the Federal Government. Independently established 12 months ago in Galiwinku, the Assembly met in Maningida where representatives from East, Central and West Arnhem Land came together to talk about the long walk toward self-management and self-determination. Rev. Dr Djiniyini Gondarra OAM (pictured right) is the spokesman for the Assembly which called for self-determination and democracy and for the power of the people in Arnhem Land, and in all Aboriginal communities, to be recognised and respected. “We want the Intervention to be thrown out and we want the Northern Territory Government to lobby the Federal Government on our behalf. “The Federal Government must start to listen to the voices on the ground. No more deception, no more lies, we want the Intervention out now and self-determination to be taken seriously,” the report stated. “We will not tolerate this bullying and it is no way to treat human beings.” The report also stated that their laws, their
culture and whole identity were being undermined. The NT government was called upon to fundamentally recognise the existence of the Madayin System of Law which has always kept the peace in their communities. Their law is no longer recognised in Court and creates serious problems in the communities as it prevents respected people from dealing with those problems. They also called for NT Police to go through more cultural training to understand the complexities of clan relations and how their law works. Children’s welfare was a major concern and the report stated the self-harm and suicide rate is five times higher now than it was before the intervention. “We need genuine empowerment to come up with solutions and be able to work with children’s and family service providers. “Many of our communities were selfnominated dry communities long before the intervention. We refuse to be collectively branded as having problems with alcohol abuse because it was our decision to be alcohol free and we enforce that. “Our dry areas and alcohol permit systems must stay; this is the responsible will of the people.”
The report calls for bilingual education to be promoted as the successful program it was and local law holders, clan leaders and family old people to have influence over cirriculum development and school structures. They called for the abolition of the Super Shires model of community governance and the return of community councils and assets, with equal funding for all communities and they want the National Partnership Agreement on Remote Indigenous Service Delivery that underpins the hub-town model to be scrapped. Local, community run organisations building and maintaining housing assets was seen as a better solution to housing shortages and also ensured jobs for community members. Before the meeting ended the group met with the newly elected NT Chief Minister Terry Mills, and member for Arafura Maralampuwi Xavier, to present their position on Federal and Territory Government policies affecting Yolngu communities.
Government’s reshuffle a ‘backward move’ THE new Government’s latest reshuffle of the administration arrangements of the NT public service has seen the Department of Children and Families merge with the Department of Education in what many regard as a backward move. This is completely at odds with their initial approach last month of breaking up Labor’s 23 government departments into 33 in order to bolster smaller agencies to make them more effective and somehow more cost efficient. In October 2010, following an independent inquiry into the state of care and protection of children in the Territory, the Growing Them Strong Together Report provided 147 recommendations, all of which were accepted for implementation.

Brolgas set to be cast in bronze Arafura Dance flings to Cairns THE Arafura Dance Association is flinging their way to Cairns for a Highland dancing competition. The dancers held a special dress rehearsal at the town hall on the weekend as part of their fundraising for the trip. Sharlene Cardilini said they were heading to Cairns for the competition on October 20. Taking part in the competition this year are: Alicia Wong, Codi Roath, Emily Tankard, Keala Florian, Kirsten Savage and Megan Donovan. Highland dance instructor with the
ADA, Ms Cardilini said: “Arafura Dance Association was pleased to present the Highland Dancing display showcasing the six wonderful local dancers. “Our incredibly talented girls, aged six to 14 years, have been in training preparing to travel to the City of Cairns Festival of Highland and Irish Dancing Competition. “It promises to attract Northern Queensland’s best dancers, and we promise to show them the Territory is best.”

RIGHT: Brolgas ready to be preserved in Bronze. A CONCERTED effort working 18 hours a day for five days saw a pair of brolgas ready for casting into bronze in the largest-ever moulding process undertaken in a remote Indigenous community. Sydney artist and sculptor Kassandra Bossell, assisted by volunteer Danny Kennedy, worked tirelessly applying layer after layer of silicon and plaster over the two huge birds until the 24 separate moulds were removed to be transported to Sydney. Brolgas as well as magpie geese and jabiru are usually seen around as the dry season starts to bite and flood-plains around the region start filling up with waterfowl seeking their freshwater springs. Last week two huge brolgas made an unexpected appearance at Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre in Yirrkala. Award-winning artist Gunybi Ganambarr completed two spectacular life-size dancing brolgas which will be cast in bronze by a Sydney foundry. After they were finished the laborious process of creating moulds of the models, the work was overseen Ms Bossell, assisted by volunteer Mr Kennedy, and two students on work experience from Nhulunbuy High School - Layla and Rachel - as well as Max Gumana, a Buku staff member on an ANKAAA traineeship. The original sculptures of the brolgas are no longer required but have been put on display at Buku until the bronze birds arrive in 2013.

Working for you Bronze is a medium the art centre has been exploring since 2010. Nawurapu Wunungmurra had his Mokuy (spirit sculptures) cast into bronze and are now permanently installed in the gardens at parliament house in Darwin. Gunybi had a set of hand-carved saratoga and archer fish cast into bronze which were shortlisted for the 2011 Togart Contemporary art prize. The complete bronze dancing brolgas will be seen in a major exhibition at Annandale Galleries in mid-2013. A set will be held in the Buku Larrnggay Mulka museum collection for viewing late in 2013.

The opening of the Seven Sisters exhibition. A SUITE of eight prints created at the Yirrkala Print Space celebrating the Yolngu connection to the heavens was opened at the Garma Festival in September and is still on public display at the Buku Larrnggay Mulka Centre. The prints were created by seven Yunupingu sisters, Dhopiya, Nyapanyapa, Barrupu, Djakangu, Djerrkngu, Ranydjupi and their recently deceased sister Djotarra. The subject of the prints was the constellation of the Seven Sisters
or Plaiedes. This star formation is an important part of Gumatj clan law and was extensively painted by their famous father Mungurrawuy Yunupingu. The heliacal rise of the formation marks the start of the harvest season in north east Arnhem and it is only once they have set and lit their own fire that it is permissible to set fire to the bush for the seasonal cleansing. Premature ignition will cause them to cry and put out those fires with unseasonal showers.
Information given in the course of the women sharing their story suggests that this knowledge is based on actual observation over millennia of fire/smoke/dust coming from the North in extreme events. The exhibition was opened with a rare keening ceremony by women of the family including the artists and was witnessed by the Garma attendees. Of the 20 editions 10 have already been reserved including by the National Gallery.

PHOTO: MARK ROY BELOW: The three 1000nm legs of the Sinelnik twins’ journey shown on their map of Australia in Cryillic, the Russian alphabet. IT’S not every day that you see what looks like an ancient Viking ship, flying under the outlaw flag of a Russian motorcycle club, moored at the Seisia beach on the tip of Cape York. But it’s not every day that you come across sailors like Russian twins Sergey and Alexander Sinelnik, either. The vessel is the Rusich, which the brothers - who built the boat themselves - solemnly describe as “an old Slavic wood-castle”. I first met this pair of professional adventurers five years ago in Carnarvon, with my good friend and Russian translator Kirill Evgenevich Ivoutin, as they set out on the second of two ill-fated attempts to row across the Indian Ocean to Tanzania in what looked like a floating yellow submarine. On that trip they had to be rescued by the RAAF, but sometimes their oddball adventures do go roughly according to plan. Each year, it seems, these fierce Russian patriots embark on a random, ill-advised and ludicrous expedition to cover some part of the globe by one improbable means or another. They have already crossed the Caspian Sea in their 15-metre Slavic “wood-castle” wearing heavy suits of armour. And dispatched the deserts of the Middle East on giant three-wheeled motorcycles. Community gardens promoted by health body A NEW website to promote remote Aboriginal community gardens The Menzies School of Health Research (Menzies) has congratulated Dr Andy Hume for developing a website to document and promote remote Aboriginal community gardens in the Top End. Funded through a General Practice Education and Training grant and supported through Menzies, the NT gardens website provides free access for gardeners to create and edit their own garden page. Dr Hume said the website will ensure Aboriginal community gardens don’t go unnoticed. “Most people don’t realise there are more than 40 known remote Aboriginal food gardens in the Top End,” he said. “These gardens are growing fresh fruit and vegetables in schools and communities, employing local people, and providing fresh food to those involved. In schools they are providing nutrition and horticultural education to the next generation of territory gardeners. “NT gardens is a way to promote what gardeners are doing and to put gardeners who remain physically isolated in remote places in touch with other people doing similar work.” To get involved or for more information, go to www.ntgardens.org

SUDOKU No. 120
Your Lucky
Stars
LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) You can be too generous for your own good at times. Don’t be afraid to refuse to help people if you are too busy. If you don’t finish your own work, you won’t be able to help anyway. Romance. An offer to go out should not be turned down. Although you are a little apprehensive about the person involved, this is an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed.
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) Be careful you don’t get into trouble at work. A misunderstanding with a colleague could spiral out of control this week. Be sure to have onlookers to agree with your side of the story. Romance. A romantic get-together will help you to ease recent tension. The date may not go as you had expected, but the company of this person will put you at ease.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st)
FOR KIDS
You will be having slightly more contact with your parents than you really want at the moment. Although they are trying to be helpful, you could find their attention a little intrusive at times. Romance. Your emotions will be much stronger than you realise. Don’t do anything without thinking first. Wait until later in the week when your emotions have settled to make decisions.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th)
Your ability to think through a problem will help you to come up with a solution where others have failed. Concentrate on the key issues. Allow others to take part in the process. Romance. You can look forward to a quiet romantic evening at home at some point this week. A surprise treat will help to cheer you up.
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)
A task that is impossible to do by yourself will be easy, so long as you can get the right help. Choose your helpers wisely as the work may take a good amount of time. Romance. Don’t let a recent dent to your confidence hold you back. Seek out the relationships you desire. You are in control.
PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) People may seem a little on-edge at the moment. Do your best to avoid getting into an argument. Walk away from unsolvable conflicts. Romance. Try to find a subtle way to show an admirer what you think about them. They will get the hint very quickly and you can move forward.
FINDWORD No. 120 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA
ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) Too much time spent analysing a situation will not help. You cannot change the past. Move on and learn from previous mistakes. Romance. A romantic gettogether will be much more successful than you may be expecting. Plan a second location so you can move quickly from one place to the next without interrupting the date.
TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)

MUDDY RIVER
You might work a little better if you were not bossed around so much. Show people that you are more capable than they realise! They may be expecting you to simply comply. Romance. It’s possible that your partner may have had a difficult day. Try to be as sympathetic and understanding as possible. Listen to their needs.
GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) A meeting in an unusual place could be significant. You will shortly be seeing this person again. Make time in your schedule for future meetings. Romance. Try not to be too erratic. Your partner will become confused if they are not sure what it is that you really want. Voice your needs and they will certainly be heard.
CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) You may be spending too much time helping other people and not enough on looking after your own needs. Don’t feel responsible for other people’s chores. Romance. This should be a very good week for romance. However, you need to take it easy and allow for things to happen naturally. Don’t force the situation.

Although it may be some time before you have more money coming in, you will be able to cope without too much trouble. Be inventive with how you spend what money you do have. Romance. Your partner may be a little unpredictable at the moment. Don’t expect too much and you won’t be let down.
VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)
You may be a little too keen to jump in without considering other options. Don’t let other people rush you into the wrong decision. Do some research before returning to this topic. Romance. A colleague could be much more interested in you than you realise. Do you want to mix business with pleasure?

Testing conditions for 10th annual fishing comp. THE 10th Walkabout Lodge John Jones Memorial Billfish Challenge was held last weekend under testing conditions. Twelve teams contested the event this year and many took advantage of the sheltered waters of Elizabeth Bay some 45km north of Gove for a muchneeded rest after day one on Saturday. Anglers were unable to tag a billfish o n S a t u r d a y, h o w ever, conditions eased enough Sunday morning to allow several billfish to be tagged and released. The results are currently being scrutinised and assessed, with the results to be announced this Saturday evening upstairs at the Walkabout Lodge Function Room. The evening will kick off from 6pm with the presentation following shortly after dinner. The event has been run for the past 10 years following the passing of John in February, 2003. His wife, Dawn, was present at the first Tournament named in John’s honour in October, 2003. He was a past president and life member of the club and was known for his strong beliefs of responsible recreational angling ethics and good sportsmanship by fellow anglers, not to mention
the having the reputation of the best home brewer in Nhulunbuy. Dawn visited and fished last year’s Gove Game Classic and spoke to club representatives following the weekend, always keen to find out who fished and how the event panned out. The NRSFC is holding a raffle in conjunction with the event for $800 tackle which will be drawn at the presentation and proceeds from this event and the Gove Game Classic fund raising will be donated to the Gove District Hospital’s Children’s Ward.

Djerrkura Cup highlight of weekend A WEEKEND of togetherness through sport is being planned for Yirrkala next weekend as members of the Geelong Football Club head to the Gove Peninsula, along with Nathan Djerrkura. The main event for the weekend is the Djerrkura Cup which has been named in honour of Nathan’s father, the late Mr Gatjil Djerrkura who died in 2004. Mr Djerrkura’s vision was to see a strengthening and empowering bond develop between Indigenous and non-indigenous people. He wanted to see all walk hand in hand towards reconciliation. “If we want to break away from a colonial past and begin anew we have to walk together hand in hand , side by side, as a truly reconciled nation,” are words he stood by as he inspired younger generations to work together for a better future for all. To that end the Djerrkura Cup was established three years ago to foster strong links between all nationalities. It will be held on Sunday, October 28, with a family fun day on the Saturday. Nathan Djerrkura recently announced he was leaving the football arena and returning home to Yirrkala. He left the Gove Peninsula in 2005 to attend year 11 and 12 at Scotch College in Melbourne. From there he was drafted to the Geelong Cats before also playing for the Western Bulldogs. After eight years away from home he is returning to Country and family. It is members of the Geelong Football Club that will be accompanying him this year to take part in the Djekkura Cup. The weekend is all about working together. There will be a meet and greet at the Bali Pavilion at the Arnhem Club on Thursday afternoon and the Geelong FC will be auctioning off some of their merchandise to raise funds for the Leaders of Tomorrow to continue to bring the program to community. The LOT and the Geelong FC will head out to Gapuwiyak with Miwatj Healthy Lifestyles to run clinics with Homelands students on the Friday. Raypirri Rom well-being programs manager at Miwatj Fiona Djerrkura said the Saturday family fun day has been organised to involve participation by members of both the Indigenous and non-indigenous communities. “It is all about walking hand in hand and side by side, as was my father’s vision,” she said. She said in the past NT Thunder and Tim Forsyth had been involved in the Cup weekends and this year, as well as the Geelong team, athlete Eliza Kurnow will
also be attending. The family fun day on Saturday will include a number of sporting activities from 2pm to 6pm at the Yirrkala Oval. ‘There will be soccer, volleyball and softball as we are encouraging participation in a variety of sports,” Ms Djekkura said. “We want to see what sports are attracting kids.” Face-painting and spear making displays, as well as the Miwatj Mobile clinic and cross cultural activities have been organised to keep the whole family busy for the day. A bus service is available for pick up from Ski Beach and town to transport people to and from Yirrkala oval. There will be a softball match between the young girls and the old girls and there is a special training session for that this weekend. (October 20) Local partners include Pacific Aluminium Gove Operations, East Arnhem School Sports, East Arnhem Shire Council, NT Softball, Kansas Bus Service, Secondary students from Yirrkala, and the Strong Fathers/Strong Families group. The main event on the weekend is on Sunday where the junior boys will play the curtain raising match from 2pm. The main event between Miwatj and Homelands begins at 4pm and promises to be a game not to be missed. After the game there will be local entertainment including school band North East Arnhem Land Boys who will be performing prior to East Journey on Sunday evening. The entertainment is set to start at 6pm and go through until 9pm. For further information, please contact Fiona Djerrkura (0429 454 179) or Kevin Bird (0407 789 467) or email birdk@miwatj.com.au

Former Milingimbi principal to head AFL initiative FORMER Milingimbi school principal Richard Stewart (pictured) has been appointed General Manager AFL Cape York House, a $5 million Cairns-based residential facility for young men from remote Indigenous communities. More than 40 students from Cape York, the Torres Strait and Gulf of Carpentaria will live at the Buchan Street residence and attend public secondary schools. Stewart, a former CEO of the Milingimbi community comes to the role with extensive experience in the education, boarding and careers sector. The new General Manager will oversee the Cape York House facility which will provide a unique opportunity for young Indigenous men to complete school in an environment that promotes education, leadership, career pathways and footy. AFL Cape York Chairman John Hollander welcomed the appointment of
Stewart and said the establishment of AFL House will provide comprehensive support for young men aged 13 to 17 years from Cape York, Thursday Island and the Gulf at a critical time of development. “Stewart’s extensive background within the education and careers sector make him a great fit to lead the program,” said Hollander. “Young men participating in the initiative will be kept very active. In addition to attending school they will play a role in setting up their own football club on site, footy training, volunteering, and for some part-time work,” Hollander said. “I am proud of the innovative approach we are taking to indigenous education. This is more than a footy camp or hostel visit. Education, career pathways and leadership will underpin all we do. There will be on-the-ground support with mentors and house parents.”

Talks to secure more NRL games CHIEF Minister Terry Mills has held talks with the National Rugby League in Sydney about more NRL games being played in the Northern Territory. Mr Mills said he met with interim NRL CEO, Shane Mattiske, to discuss future opportunities for the sport in the Northern Territory. “My Government is keen to develop Rugby League in the Northern Territory,” Mr Mills said. “One way of achieving this is by
having big NRL games played here. “In the past 17 years, only one NRL match for premiership points has been played in the Territory. “In order to grow the sport, we need our juniors to see their roles models in action in these big game matches. “While the previous Labor Government let negotiations lapse after the last deal expired in April this year, my Government will continue to engage with the NRL for future possibilities for the Territory.”
