Police warning to residents - especially women . . .
Beware of what’s happening around you While long regarded as a safe and friendly community, sadly Nhulunbuy is clearly not immune from people who are intent on doing harm: Lynne Walker
LOCAL POLICE are urging residents, especially women, to be ever mindful of what is going on around them. Officer-in-Charge at Nhulunbuy Senior-Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said this comes following the warnings by police two weeks ago, urging residents to ensure their homes and belongings are always secured. Local Member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker said: “I can’t begin to imagine how traumatic this ordeal has been for Ms Turner who had every reason to fear for her life, not to mention her family who waited anxiously for news following her disappearance. “I acknowledge the excellent work of police in apprehending the offenders and bringing them into custody. “While long regarded as a safe and friendly community, sadly Nhulunbuy is clearly not immune from people who are intent on doing harm. “Justice will now take its course through the courts, while I suspect Ms Turner will take some time to heal physically and emotionally.” Police were alerted last Monday when a mother did not return home after her usual morning walk in time to take a child to school, and soon found there was a serious cause for concern. Victoria Turner, 30, failed to return home and her phone and some other items were found in the street, sparking an immediate search. Police were already on the job investigating a series of unlawful entries in town overnight on Monday, and linked the vehicle, for which they were seeking,
with the disappearance. They contacted the owners of the vehicle who advised them it would likely be in the Cape Arnhem or Dhaniya Outstation area. Snr Sgt Muldoon called for assistance from Darwin and the assistance of a local helicopter from Jayrow who picked up two officers and searched for the vehicle. “They saw the vehicle near the Garma site and located it near the Bulman Track and Arnhem Highway. As the helicopter followed the vehicle, it was stopped and the woman released,” he said. An officer who was on the helicopter alighted and sat and waited with the woman while the helicopter pursued the vehicle. Police had left town when the helicopter first sighted the vehicle and were on the scene with Mrs Turner within about 10 minutes and waited for the ambulance. “Several police cars followed the vehicle through rugged bushland and backed off when it became too dangerous to pursue them. One police car was run off the road and blew a tyre in the process,” Snr Sgt Muldoon said. “We were concerned for the safety of the people in the vehicle as they appeared not to be wearing seat belts and thought the vehicle might roll. “Mrs Turner was safe and we had a fair idea as to the identity of the people in the car so called off the pursuit for the safety of the rest of the community. “A fixed-wing ‘plane and the helicopter assisted in the search which was called off at 6pm. “All the police attended for a debrief
and we received information all the males involved were drinking at the outstation. “The vehicle was seized by police when it was driven back to town by members of the community.”
An early morning raid by two local officers and five from the major crime team at a house at the Outstation located all five alleged offenders asleep. They also recovered a .22 rifle which had been stolen from

awards were presented by the Chief Minister Terry Mills. Nhulunbuy Town Administrator Ross Theedom said to hear the judges’ comments on our town was truly inspiring. “I know how good this place is, but to see it through the eyes of others and how highly they speak of our efforts was great. It made me proud to be the Town Administrator and part of the town,” Dr Theedom said. “The two awards are the result of the efforts of so many. “Yes, the Nhulunbuy Corporation Ltd played a role, but then so did many others like Gumatj Waste Management P/L, YBE(2) P/L, Arnhem Land Pest Control, Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation and Brown’s Backyard. “In their own right and/or in association with Corporation staff, these organisations cared for the town and public areas, managed our waste disposal and provided services that ensured that our environmental efforts were recognised. “And then the community played its part by caring for their gardens and the surrounds. So, our success is the result of our community’s efforts. And, everyone should be justifiably proud. “Being at the presentation was inspiring. To see what other communities are doing and what they have achieved makes you see just how forward thinking and progressive our NT communities are. “The overall Tidy Town winner, Wugularr (Beswick) was simply amazing. They were worthy winners of the award. “Such a small community (400 people) have achieved so much and become a model for the future. It also shows what can be achieved if you simply put your mind to it. “The 2012 Tidy Towns Awards have shown that the bar for achieving any award is extremely high. “Communities have already set their minds to 2013 and their renewed efforts will see that bar raised even higher. It is great to see the competitive side come out in so many areas as the winners from this competition will be the NT as a whole, the communities and the environment.” Jabiru in West Arnhem Land won the category for Best Resource Recovery Management CEO of Keep Australia Beautiful Council Northern Territory Heimo Schober said: “It is always a pleasure to be able to recognise and promote the work that many dedicated individuals and communities are undertaking to continuously improve the social and environmental developments within their own communities across the Territory”. Wugularr also received the Award for 2012 Best Medium Territory Tidy Town Community plus the 2012 Geoff Finch Memorial Cup. Mr Schober, said, “The community of Wugularr has maintained a proud involvement with the Territory Tidy Towns program this year and it’s great to see that the Roper Gulf Shire had taken the Top Territory Tidy Towns award again. “There has been some healthy competition between communities for the Tidy Towns Awards again this year - and it’ll be even more competitive next year as participation increases.”

Man arrested in Nhulunbuy over Darwin sexual assaults A 40-year-old man, arrested in Nhulunbuy on Saturday afternoon, has been charged in relation to the alleged sexual assault of two women in Darwin on Friday. Sex Crimes Division Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Kieran Wells said : “Detectives from the Sex Crimes Division travelled to Nhulunbuy this morning (Sunday) to interview the man and he was later charged with: Attempted sexual assault; Deprivation of liberty; Make threat to kill; Indecent assault and two counts of aggravated assault.” “The man received Magistrates bail and will appear in the Darwin Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday November 20 . “The information we received from members of the public, as a direct result of social media, has been crucial in this investigation. “I would like to thank members of the public for their assistance; no matter how small the piece of information, it all helps build a bigger picture. “Once again social media has proven to be a valuable tool and this is a great outcome for the Community and Police,” said Detective A/Snr Sergeant Wells. NT Police released an image of the
man captured on CCTV footage that they believed may be able to assist them with their enquiries in relation to the assault of two women on Friday morning. Both assaults took place in Shadforth Lane, Darwin, within minutes of each other. “Between 12:25am and 12:35am, it is alleged an unknown man assaulted a 21-year-old woman in Shadforth Lane by grabbing her around the neck. “The woman was able to escape from the man and report the matter to licensed premises who then rang Police,” Detective A/Senior Sergeant Wells. “In a separate incident, an 18-year-old woman was sitting in a parked vehicle on Shadforth Lane when she was approached by an unknown man. “It is alleged the man entered the vehicle and attempted to sexually assault the woman. She was able to fight him off and escape from the vehicle where she then reported the matter to Police.” Police continue to encourage anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the area or anyone that may have further information to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Beware of what’s happening around you: Police << From Page 1 “The 16-year-old male was charged with aggravated assault, deprivation of liberty and possess/ use firearm unlicensed. “A 20-year-old was charged with aggravated assault, deprivation of liberty, drive speed at manner dangerous and drive unsafe motor vehicle.” Both appeared in Darwin Court on Thursday and the Court heard that Brian Yunupingu, 20, was the driver of a vehicle involved in the incident and allegedly took Ms Turner to a secluded beach for six hours, evading police. He was granted bail with a $1000 surety to appear in Nhulunbuy Magistrate’s Court on November 8 The 16-year-old is accused of hitting Ms Turner on the head twice with a woomera, briefly knocking her out before dragging her into the vehicle. He also allegedly threatened her with a hammer and later asked her for sex. He did not apply for bail and will
reappear in court on October 23. “Three of the male youths, aged 13, 14 and 15, were released without charge,” Superintendent O’Brien said. “The three boys are to be considered for Youth Diversion in relation to a number of unlawful entries which have occurred throughout the town in recent weeks.” Mrs Taylor was allegedly knocked unconscious by a 16-year-old and dragged into the vehicle. It was further alleged that, at one stage, she was asked for sex and when she declined the males went fishing. When she asked them could she leave, she was allegedly threatened with a hammer. Snr Sgt Muldoons thanked all who had been involved in the search including all local officers in town who were recalled to duty. He also thanked the Gumatj community for their assistance as well as Jayrow Helicopters and Laynhapuy Aviation.
History of serious incidents
Snr Sgt Muldoon’s calls for vigilance are highlighted by several other serious incidents in Nhulunbuy over the last two years although he did state the incidents were not related to last week’s incident. • On December 14 last year a teenager was assaulted on her way to work also at about 5.30am. The 16-year-old was heading towards the bakery from South and called her father when she became concerned about a group of men and youths. Two 18-year-olds and a 16-year-old and 17-year-old youth were taken into custody with one being remanded in custody and sent to Darwin. She was assaulted and robbed near the Peninsula Motel on Mathew Flinders Way. She was approached from behind and punched and kicked repeatedly to the head and turso area resulting in her being evacuated to Darwin Hospital for urgent treatment. • In May a teenage girl was assaulted when a man entered the family home; and • In April a five-year-old girl was also assaulted in her home. • On Januarty 6, 2011, a 38-year-old woman was murdered on an unnamed track. In March, 2012, Wayne William Robert-Barlow was found guilty of the murder of the mother of two. In May Barlow, 22, was sentenced to life with a 20-year, nonparole period.

East Arnhem Council’s CEO resigns
Youth invited to join round table
EAST Arnhem Shire Council’s inaugural Chief Executive Officer Mr Ian Bodill (pictured right) has resigned after more than four and a half years in the top job. Presidentof EASC Banambi Wunungmurra paid tribute to Mr Bodill and his significant contribution to the Council since joining in early 2008. “It is with great hesitation that I have accepted Ian’s resignation”, said Mr Wunungmurra. “Ian has worked tirelessly in bringing staff together following amalgamation and implemented changes to council’s operations that have benefited the organisation and communities of East Arnhem Land. “East Arnhem Shire Council is recognised as a progressive council within Northern Territory Local Government and this has been achieved under the vision of Ian. “The council as a whole would like to thank Ian for his invaluable service and leadership, particularly during the
NOMINATIONS are now open for participants in the Chief Minister’s Round Table. The current chair of the Round Table is Emily Osborne (pictured), from Nhulunbuy, who has represented the local youth, while Russell Burns, from Yirrkala, is also a representative. Miss Osborne said the Youth Round Table had opened up a world of opportunities for her. “It has allowed me to meet people with whom I would have never had the chance to meet otherwise. “I have presented to Ministers and members who actually listened and acknowledged my voice. The world is your oyster, and Youth Round Table is an amazing platform to start.” Since 1997, about 240 young people have participated in the Chief Minister’s
early stages of a new council; firstly learning to crawl and now walk. “We wish Ian every success with his future endeavours”, he said. Mr Bodill has enjoyed his time as chief executive and praised the dedication, commitment and professionalism of the Council and 300-strong shire workforce. “It has been a blessing to work with aboriginal communities of East Arnhem Land” Mr Bodill said. “You are only as good as the team around you, and I have had the absolute honour of working with not only a professional and dedicated workforce, but also a strong and stable council that has lead by example in the decision making process of council. “I look forward to the new opportunities and challenges that lie ahead and wish everyone all the best,” he said. Mr Bodill’s tenure has seen through the amalgamation of the community councils to the
East Arnhem Shire as well as the implementation of the Northern Territory’s first stand alone Reconciliation Action Plan. His resignation will allow Mr Bodill, who has spent a number of years working in Executive Local Government Management, to spend much valued time with his wife and to complete his second Masters degree. Mr Bodill final day was on Friday, October 19, and Chief Financial and Operations Officer Mr Kerry Whiting has been appointed Acting CEO.

Snapshots back to the 2007 G Spot Challenge which provided another excuse to dress up in Gove, and where challenges are limited only by the imagination. that will long be remembered and will achieve their goal of providing an avenue for people to lend a hand. “We want to be able to ease their burden and also give those who have been asking me ‘what can we do to help’ an avenue to be able to offer some assistance,” Jackie said. The group came up with their own challenge - ‘The G Spot -revisited’ - which is a fundraiser being held on November 17. The orginal G Spot Challenge was held in 2007 and was organised by Michelle Ormsby. The fun of the event had been firmly implanted on the memory of those participating (including Tania) and was based on the TV series - The Amazing Race. The name - well that came simply from ‘a spot in Gove’. The event will feature over 10 locations which will each offer the participants a challenge - whether it is for one or two team members or the whole team. The clues for the next location - nothing
simple - all cryptic and the activities - as Fiona said are all about having fun. “We don’t want people to get too frustrated but just to have a lot of laughs . . . but we can’t make it too easy either,” she said. “The event is all about raising money to help out friends,” said Jackie. There is a limit of five participants per team and a cut off of the number of teams paricipating. Each team needs to pay $150 to ensure their spot in the challenge and all entrants need to be 18-years or older to participate because of the nature of some of the challenges. Each team needs their own car; a 4WD is not
necessarily required. A ‘Sober Bob’ or designated driver needs to be appointed on each team to ensure the safety of all involved, and Fiona said that, by the end of the challenge, the drivers are often the ones who can figure out the clues. The organisers, who started with the event only last week, have been delighted that teams have already signed up. “Someone also asked to sponsor a challenge and we would like to hear from anyone else who can help in this way or by offering prizes or monetary sponsorship,” said Jackie. “We are also holding a raffle which will be drawn
at the presentation and have a voucher from Banubanu, a scenic flight by Laynhapuy Aviation, and an ipad from Lynne Walker as major prizes already.” As with many events in Gove there is the opportunity to dress up and have a theme for your team. A prize will be given to the best-themed and decorated team and transport. For those new to town or not able to get a team together - that is no problem as the organisers can co-ordinate teams. Anyone with offers of sponsorship or wanting to register a team call Jackie McGrath (0417 831 930) or Fiona Pearce (0427 886 560).
Arabian theme for Maternity Ward fundraiser ONE might be excused for wondering where they are if they think they are hearing music more akin with a harem next Saturday. A group of women has organised an Arabian-themed night of dance and Champagne as a fundraising for the Maternity Ward at Gove District Hospital. One of the organisers of the event, Pauline Cassar, is a midwife at GDH and also part of the Nhulunbuy bellydancing group. “I have taken part in similar events in Adelaide that were held at the bellydance school I used to attend. They called these events, Harem Hafla’s, a women’s only dance party where the students and teachers would perform dances for each other and where everyone could let down their hair and just enjoy themselves in the company of other women,” she said. “I’ve been dreaming of holding a
similar event here in Gove and when I mentioned it to a couple of friends - Meaghan Kennedy, also a midwife, and Jacque Knyvett, a nurse, they were inspired to help make it happen.
“All three of us have given birth to at least one of our children at the maternity ward here in Gove and we decided to use the Champagne Shimmy to raise funds for the unit, to help purchase items to make women’s stay on the ward more enjoyable, starting with 10 brightly coloured bed spreads to brighten up the rooms.
“Our Nhulunbuy bellydancing group is also excited about the event; we always love to have the opportunity to perform and, sadly, this may be our last show as many of our dancers have left Nhulunbuy or are leaving soon. So if there are any bellydancers out there make yourselves known.” The event will be held at the Lion’s Club house in Arnhem Road (behind the bakery) on Saturday, October 27. The fun will start at 7.30pm and there will be a limited number of tickets available at $25 each. There will be lucky door prizes and the entry includes a light supper, champagne and entertainment by the Nhulunbuy Bellydancers. The event is supported by the Australian Breasfeeding Association and tickets are available at Lynne Walker’s Office.

A GROUP of 12 people was located safe and well onThursday after their vessel experienced mechanical problems off the coast of Numbulwar. Senior Sergeant Tony Deutrom, from Alyangula Police Station, said the group, from Umbakumba and Angurugu Communities, departed Numbulwar in a recreational fishing vessel bound for Groote Eylandt on Wednesday evening. “The vessel encountered mechanical difficulties and broke down a short way into their journey,” Senior Sergeant Deutrom said. “The occupants managed to get the vessel to shore, about 40km north east of Numbulwar, and used their mobile phone to call

Police from Alyangula and Rangers joined the search utilising a fixed-wing aircraft and a Rangers vessel.
“The party of 12 was located in good spirits on a beach near Hart River at around 10:40am. The Rangers conveyed all of the occupants to Bickerton Island. “This was an excellent outcome, and a great example of how Police and the community have come together to avert a potential tragedy. East Journey’s debut album Guwak was issued to key national media representatives in print, online, radio and TV in June. A radio edit of ‘Song of Arnhem Land’, which upon release was picked up by triple j, ABC Local and Radio Australia for airplay during NAIDOC week was also sent out. visited the Yirrkala school, banana plantation and art centre. On Wednesday afternoon the flew out heading to Horn Island to rejoin their ship before heading to Thursday Island. The set off from Darwin on October 12 and completed their cruise in Carins on October 23 before flying to their respective homes. The passengers described their trip as an expedition and not a holiday. The had visited Elcho Island and the Victoria Settlement before coming to Gove. There were guest lecturers on board the ship and the active retirees joined in cultural, artistic and naturalist activities and talks. Several said this was their second or third trip on the Coral Princess - taking different cruises each time. The Coral Princess visits Gove twice a year and the passengers said one of the advantages of a smaller vessel was that they could go up some creeks and rivers, and get to a lot of places they couldn’t get to by road.

JUMPING off the boat with backpacks, a couple looked like they were visiting Banabanu for the duration rather than the usual short stay for which the eco resort has become well known throughout the region. Shelly Haggas and Mark Blackburn received a phone call while they were in Cairns the night before an quickly shifted their plans from going to work on a watermelon farm to coming over to work on a tropical island. Last chance to see a total eclipse UNLESS you were around in the year 710 AD, or plan to stick about until April 25, 2237, then Wednesday, November 14 may be your only chance to view a total eclipse of the sun in Northern Australia. The eclipse will take place from 5.45 to 7.40 on the morning, and astronomers have said Cairns and nearby regions will be among the best places on the planet to watch the proceedings. Those who will be watching the solar eclipse, with their sunglasses on for safety, will see the moon block out the sun as it passes between it and the earth. At the time of the total eclipse, the sky will become dark and a glowing light will line the horizon. Planets and bright stars will be visible and the sun’s spectacular outer atmosphere (the Corona) will appear.

people in the news - DJIRIRRA WUNUNGMURRA
The people have spoken and: Gangan artist is their choice GANGAN artist Djirirra Wunungmurra (pictured) has been voted the People’s Choice Award winner as part of this year’s 29th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award. The 44-year-old artist received 118 votes of the 1544 votes cast for her bark painting Yukuwa (pictured right), which is one of the artist’s personal names and is also a yam, whose annual reappearance is a metaphor for the increase and renewal of the people and their land, She also took out the The Telstra Bark Painting Award when the winners were announced in August. Manager at the Buku-Larrnggaqay Mulka Centre Will Stubbs said Art prizes aren’t a democracy. “They depend on the taste of a small group of experts. When you win the People’s Choice as well (as her brother Nawurapu did in 2010) that means that your art has touched the most number of people. It is like Idol or Australia’s Got Talent and anyone can vote,” Mr Stubbs said. “At the time she won (in August) there was a lot of buzz around that it was the best thing there and should have won the overall first prize. “This is the 26th award that Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre artists have won over the last 18 years. This is a record that the whole region can be proud of,” he said. Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) Director Pierre Arpin and Telstra Area General Manager for the Northern
Territory Brian O’Keefe congratulated Ms Wunungmurra on her win. “Yukuwa is a remarkable bark for both its subtlety of colour and complexity of form,” Mr Arpin said. “The use of the yam imagery radiating from the centre to the outer edges of the bark makes this a most-magical work. “We are also very pleased to have acquired this bark which is now part of our Telstra NATSIAA collection.” Mr O’Keefe congratulated Ms Wunungmurra
on receiving the People’s Choice Award and commended all 63 artists represented in this year’s exhibition. “Each year we see some of the finest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists represented in the Telstra Art Award. “It’s fantastic that so many people have had the opportunity to view the exhibition here in Darwin and also online around the world.” Tiwi Islands artist Timothy Cook won the $40,000 Telstra Award in August for his insightful painting Kulama that demonstrates his strong connection to culture and country at the 29th Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award. The Wandjuk Marika Memorial ThreeDimensional Award, sponsored by Telstra, was awarded to Maningrida artist Jack Nawilil for his work Namorroddo. Mr Nawilil has used paperbark, bush string, natural pigments, beeswax and feathers to create this work that tells the story of Namorroddo who was travelling for a long time in a dream from Gapuwiyak to Ramingining looking for honey. Artworks in this year’s exhibition are featured in an online gallery and on an interactive website www.nt.gov.au/natsiaa, which offers users from around the world the opportunity to view moving images of this year’s artworks and listen to recordings of the stories behind the works through a virtual online gallery.
people in the news - BOLLYWOOD BELLES By KELLIE FRANCIS A COMBINED ladies’ Variety team from Gove and Townsville completed the recent 2012 NT Variety bash, in a 30-year-old Mercedes Benz as the Bollywood Belles. All team members had Bollywood names and these included Akeepacummin Belle (Debbie Doust), Bacca Belle (Sally Putland), Luvabiriyani Belle (Les Mallard), Despisacurry Belle (Jo Peters) and Akneedaraja Belle (Kellie Francis). Unfortunately one of our team mates Keshinibaldi Belle (Cath Lane) could not make it but we took her along in spirit. This is the second Variety team originating from Gove, alongside the legendary team the ‘Queens’. This year, the Queens took out ‘top fundraiser’ again, which they have done now for nine of the last 10 years. The Queens raised $60,000 for NT Variety with the Bollywood Belles raising $8500. The bash this year started in Kuranda in Queensland and finished in Katherine - some 2800 km of dirt, rivers, station gates, grids and bitumen (black stuff). There were 28 cars on this bash with around 100 travellers (bashers) plus around 15 support crew of mechanics, cooks, photographers, truck drivers, sweep, Bash Chairperson, NT Variety President, NT Variety CEO and other organizers . The Bollywood Belles had been in preparation mode from about March, 2012, with the Townsville team members getting the car ready with the assistance of some fabulous sponsors and support from businesses and selling raffle tickets, while the Gove girls got cooking. Morning teas were well supported at Gove Hospital, a raffle plus some community sponsorships and donations plus a few cleaning jobs were undertaken by the team to get that money in the bank. The theme was decided, costumes purchased and bells polished. A red faces act was also on the cards and a ‘bash’ afternoon tea was also scheduled with an Indian flavor. The final dinner was a great night with the Army Reserve Band entertaining us for the evening where we danced the dirt away till the early hours of the next morning. Unexpectedly we took out two awards for the night. The Show and Shine award - for all our hard work with team and car presentation and also the Best Basher Contribution award for our hosted arvo smako at King Fisher Camp. Our awards would have not been possible if it were not for some unbelievable Bollywood Belle supporters and sponsors. The Bash is an Australian’s tradition, started by Dick Smith in 1985 - it is something truly special.

KIDS’ CALENDAR
Primary Students took part in a calendar competition and the winners were announced on Thursday.
Kids’ calendar winners announced
A RECORD 300 entries were received for the Pacific Aluminium Gove Operations annual calender which first started in 2004. Organised by the Health Safety and Environment department in conjunction with the Community engagement team the calender invites local primary students to submit a drawing depicting a theme. This year the theme was ‘Water’ and it is hoped the competition helps the students raise their own awareness by coming up with an entry and also the awareness of others by producing the calendar. Leon Stuade, from HSE, said he was delighted that so many children had taken the time to submit entries and that judging had been no easy take. The finalists for each age group are displayed at the Nhulunbuy Community Library and he thanked the staff for their assistance in putting the display up. The announcement of winners took place last Thursday to co-incide with water week. Mr Staude also thanked Gove Tackle and Outdoors who had come onboard and supplied prizes for all the 13 finalists. Each was presented a certificate and their art work will be featured in the 2013 calendar which should be available in December. Students from Nhulunbuy Primary School, Nhulunbuy Christian College, Yirrkala School and Homelands Schools all participated. Students who will be featured in the calendar are David Yunupingu and Dayparra Wunungmurra from Gapuwiyak; Hannah Devon, Liam Henderson, Maree Adams, Ritayan Misra, Urja Pugalia, Conor Rossiter and Isabel Blundell from Nhulunbuy Primary; and Jorja Eales, Katie Farnsworth , Kira Whyte, Linda Zuglian from Nhulunbuy Christian College. LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) You will be in quite an adventurous mood this week. If you can find some suitable outlet for your energy, everything will go well. Spend your time outdoors. Romance. Don’t allow family duties to get in the way of a romantic evening. It’s important to designate time to your personal relationships as well.
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) Try to avoid getting into an argument with a colleague. This person can be very petty at times. You will only be giving up precious time. Romance. A new relationship may seem to be slowing down a little. An honest discussion will help to clear the air. Avoid routine and spice up the relationship later this week.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st)
FOR KIDS
A group of friends that you do not know very well may want to see more of you. Don’t be afraid to get involved. They will bring new ideas to the forefront. Romance. You will meet an interesting person later in the day. Your first impressions may not be very favourable, however. Allow time for this relationship to develop.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) You will not be very pleased if somebody wastes your time because they can’t decide what they want. You may have to decide for them. Romance. This will be an excellent day for romance. Both you and your partner will be in just the right mood for an evening on the town. Take your partner dancing to really spice things up!
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th) An improvement in your relationship with your colleagues will help you to feel much more positive about your work. However, it’s not always healthy to rely on others’ opinions. Romance. Your partner may want to tell you how much they care. You will need to put them at ease first. Are you making the relationship more difficult than it should be?
PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) Try not to mention a subject which you know might lead to trouble. This week is not the best time to discuss sensitive issues. Save your opinions for later. Romance. Don’t try too hard to catch your partner out. Your curiosities may get the best of you and leave you feeling guilty.

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) This week, you will be able to enjoy the company of a few friends. There is lots of gossip to look forward to. Free your schedule for this gathering. Romance. Be careful to separate reality from fantasy. Everything will go well, but it will not happen in quite the way you have been expecting.
TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) A person whom you have always thought was boring may be quite interesting. You should open yourself up to people more often. Romance. An office romance could gradually become more serious. Tread carefully, until you are sure. Be careful of power roles and how a relationship will affect your work life.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) Try to rely on your gut feelings about a difficult situation. There may be some hidden pitfalls. If you are open to some small setbacks, this venture can be good for you. Romance. You will be thinking very positively about the long-term future of your relationship at the moment. Keep these positive feelings going all week.
CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) You will become frustrated if you don’t manage to find a new outlet for your energy. You have achieved a lot recently, but need to move on. Start a new project. Romance. Your partner will be very supportive of a recent change. Be sure to acknowledge this support and to also take charge of this new direction you’ve chosen to take.
LEO (July 24th - August 23rd)
QUOTE OF THE DAY
“
“
Consider how hard it is to change yourself and
you’ll understand what
little chance you have in trying to change others.
– Jacob M. Braude
SOLUTIONS No. 121
You may find it difficult to “see the forest from the trees” at the moment. Try to get a different view on the situation from someone that you trust. Romance. Ceres is in good aspect this week. You may want to “nurture” your partner a little more than usual. Invest more time in this relationship and you will enjoy the result.
VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) Try to forget a recent remark. This is not something that you should take seriously. It was simply a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Romance. A wild fling is on the cards. Be careful not to do anything which you will regret later. Is this person someone you’d like a meaningful relationship with?

Expressions closing after eight years THERE was no slowing down for Eleisha Sloane and Kristy Smith at Expressions Boutique on Saturday, October 14, as they closed their doors in Nhulunbuy for the last time. It was not a drop off in business that forced the closure, but a dispute over a lease on the building. Expressions owner Selina Sloane said that, when the problem first arose, she had pursued a couple of other avenues for a change of location but to no avail. She had even gone to the expense of spending $20,000 on an alternative premises, only to find out at the 11th hour that she couldn’t move in or operate out of the semi-industrial location in Arnhem Road. She said she had turned down an offer to buy the business as the people, making the offer, just wanted the clothing component and Ms Sloane did not want to put her four staff members out of work. “The beauty component is a major part of the business. We did not close our business because we wanted to or because it was floundering. “We closed because we were having issues with the lease. Our lawyers are now addressing these issues. “We have been running the business for eight of the 12 years that we have been in Gove and we have always supported the community,” Ms Sloane said. Eleisha said she was really going to miss the customers as many had been coming to them since they opened. “Saturday was our last day and now we are just packing everything up. “We are very sad to leave and even sadder at the way we feek we have been forced out. “We had a great clientele and many of them have also expressed how sad they are that we are leaving,” she said.

Man found week after being lost A 38-year-old man, who went missing from Alpurrurulam on Saturday, October 13, has been located safe and well. Superintendent Craig Barrett said the search for Lawrence Campbell was suspended last Friday after an extensive, three-day air and ground search. “Mr Campbell told Police he got bogged near a river and decided to walk to Barkly Downs Station. “Mr Campbell walked to the water holes through Austral Downs Station and across into Barkly Downs Station, where is brother was staying,” said Superintendent Barrett. “Mr Campbell and his brother returned to the community on the weekend and attended the local Police Station to advise he was no longer missing. “Local Police, cattle station workers, members of the community and Queensland Police members from Camooweal

covered over 28,000 sq km of area in the search for Mr Campbell. “It is a great outcome for Police and the family of Mr Campbell to have him return to the community safe and well. “The Northern Territory outback can be a very unforgiving place if you become stranded or lost. “If you plan to travel long distances you should always inform someone of your detailed travel plans, including your estimated time of arrival, and carry an EPIRB.” During the search family members had told Police Mr Campbell left the community at around midday on Saturday, October 13, and was travelling in a white Holden commodore utility to Urandangi in Queensland for a cricket match. Investigations have revealed Mr Campbell never arrived at the cricket match and had not accessed his bank account.

V8 Supercars return to Darwin THE V8 Supercars will return to Darwin in 2013, with a date now locked in for next year’s Championship. Minister for Tourism and Major Events Matt Conlan said the Territory can now look forward to the V8 Supercars visiting on June 14-16, 2013. “The V8 Supercars are a much-anticipated event on the Territory calendar and are a fantastic boost to the Territory economy,” Mr Conlan said. “The 2013 V8 Supercars Championship will have an added element of excitement, as Nissans and MercedesBenz AMGs compete for the first time.
“This year’s event drew a crowd in excess of 48,000 and was a huge windfall for local businesses. “But undoubtedly the big winners are motor-sport fans who have a great opportunity to get close to the track and see the drivers and their fantastic high performance vehicles. “The Country Liberals first secured the Hidden Valley round back in 1998 and the event is now secure until at least 2018. “Darwin comes alive when the V8 Supercars are in town in what is a mustsee Territory event.”

Emily Tankard and Ashley Verrall.
From gymnastics to dancing WHEN a young girl arrived in Gove from South Africa she found she could no longer pursue her passion of gymnastics so changed to dancing. Ashley Verrell, 13, a year 7 student at Nhulunbuy High School, has just returned from Darwin where she, and fellow competitor Emily Tankard, did extremely well at the Showcase NT Titles. Both girls, members of the Arafura Dance Association, have now qualified for the National titles to be hosted in Queensland on January 18-20 at Jupiters Casino on the Gold Coast. Ashley performed in the ballet and jazz sections and achieved a High Silver second Award in ballet and a High Silver in Jazz.
When Ashley lived in South Africa she had been competing in Gymnastics for four years. In 2007 and 2008 she achieved the silver level and achieved her provincial colours so that she could represent her county, although she was too young to compete abroad. Ashley had choreographed her own jazz routine and had incorporated elements of gymnastics into her routine. “I hope to perform on Broadway and work in New York,” said the teenager. “I know I have a lot of hard work ahead of me and that I need to remain very focused to get there but I am determined to do my best.” Emily Tankard did exceptionally well in four categories.
Emily received First High Silver awards for : student own choreograph, ballet, Broadway jazz and contemporary. True Blue winners of fishing comp. THE winners of the Walkabout Lodge John Jones Memorial Billfish Challenge were announced at the Walkabout on Saturday night. The Challenge, organised by the Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club (NRSFC), was held over the previous weekend in some very testing conditions. The winning team was True Blue - Mischa Bertschi, Bruce Arkcoll and Murray Nivett - with
the trophy presented by Talitha Weldon. Mischa Bertschi won the first prize with his black marlin and sailfish, while Ralph Pellenat from Team Tess was second and Bob Dunn from Are We there Yet? third. The competition was a tag-andrelease and, although Saturday proved to be void of fish, Sunday saw a couple of great catches.
Kylie Piddick received a meritorious award for her 23kg long tail tuna. The Challenge was started in 2003 in memory of John Jones who promoted responsible Billfishing in the surrounding waters of East Arnhem Land with the NRSFC. He was a past president and life member of the club known for his strong beliefs of responsible
recreational angling ethics and good sportsmanship. The next fishing challenge for the club is the 2012 XXXXGOLD Gove Game Classic which will be held over eight days. Fishing is between November 9-16 with anglers fishing any four days during that period. Anglers will compete for prizes valued at over $20,000 in 29 prize categories. Paul Grover and Cassandra Duykers.
