Backing for marine park
LOCAL environmental watchdogs and the recreational anglers have supported the Australian Government’s formal proclaimation of the
world’s largest system of marine parks around the coastline establishing 40 new marine reserves. The new reserve closest
to Gove is the Wessel Marine Reserve and Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation and the Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club (NRSFC) have
come out in support of this area. At this point there will be no changes on the water for marine users as the Com-
monwealth Government is yet to develop a management plan for this area. It is expected consultation with stakeholders in the
marine environment will be forthcoming in the near future to assist in the development of the plan. Continued Page 7 >>

Mature-age apprentice top of his trade for N.T. APPRENTICES are not always teenagers and last week a mature-age apprentice proved he was up to the task by receiving the Charles Darwin University School of Trades award for Most-Outstanding second-year Plumber. Brent Roath, 39, works for the Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited and said he was most grateful for the support he had been given in undertaking his apprenticeship. He started with the NCL five years ago as a plant operator and jumped at the opportunity to undertake a plumbing apprenticeship. “There are a lot of mature apprentices and I think we have the maturity to see that we complete all that is required of us,” he said. “I don’t think I could have done this without the support of the Corporation,” said the father of four. The NCL manager, engineering services, Keith Weymes, said that he and the rest of the crew were proud of Brent’s success and pleased he had been acknowledged for all his hard work.

“We would like to hear from plumbers in town who could offer him a wider range of opportunities while he is completing his apprenticeship with us,” said Mr Weymes. Brent added that he was gaining heaps of experience for work throughout the town, although he was not able to access domestic-type work in his current position. He said he felt it would make him a more-rounded tradesmen if he could also access working with a plumber dealing with homes and industrial areas. Brent is currently working on the replacement of water mains around town. As well as his certificate he also received a voucher with which to purchase more tools of his trade. 60+ drink-limit call AN Australian researcher is calling for national guidelines with lower alcohol limits for people over 60 after a survey showed one in five were drinking to dangerous levels. Dr Kim-Michelle Gilson, of Melbourne University, said seven per cent of older men binge drink on a weekly basis as a coping strategy, which was also related to depressive symptoms. She said older people were also more susceptible to alcohol-related accidents and falls, particularly if they were also taking several medications. “As we age, the metabolising of alcohol slows down with the higher percentage of body fat and lower percentage of total body water so that even a low dosage of alcohol can cause significant harm,” Gilson said. US drinking guidelines for men over 60 were for only one standard drink per day and seven per week. For women, the total was less, she said.
Local vet receives international recognition A VETERINARIAN working for the East Arnhem Shire Council has been recognised for her dedication to animal welfare by being awarded a prestigious IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) Action Award. Dr Emma Kennedy works for the Council as the Vet and Animal Control Manager, improving animal health and promoting improved animal welfare awareness across 33,000 sq km of East Arnhem Land, was presented with her award by IFAW Regional Director Isabel McCrea at the annual awards ceremony at Customs House in Sydney. “Emma Kennedy is one of those fabulous people who not only has made a career out of her passion, but on a daily basis goes above and beyond the job description to improve the health and welfare of animals,” Ms McCrea said. “We have heard that she has single-handedly improved the
overall health and welfare of many dogs on the remote Top End communities that previously had little or no regular contact with veterinary services. “As well as delivering outstanding animal care services, Emma also plays a key role in employing local indigenous people in animal management roles, while helping to raise awareness of animal welfare throughout the communities.” Emma Kennedy is one of 10 animal heroes across Australia to receive an IFAW accolade, which recognises people who have made outstanding contributions to animal welfare. “We hope that by highlighting some of these exceptional people more Australians will acknowledge and respect the important part that animals play in our shared world,” Ms McCrea said. This international accolade recognises the unsung heroes who have gone above and beyond the
call of duty to care for animals in our shared world. The winners were nominated for their awards by their peers, family, friends and local communities, for a wide range of work for animals. This year new category winners include a vet who works tirelessly online, a dog who saved the life of a neighbour and two of Australia’s mostexperienced Army explosive detection dogs. “By acknowledging the hard work of scientists, school students, rural vets, volunteers and animal welfare advocates, IFAW hopes to show that our animal heroes come from all walks of life. It’s not just the people doing hands on work with animals who make a difference - everyone can contribute. “Raising awareness and helping to change attitudes and behaviours towards animals is just as important.” Ms McCrea said.

Suter - Snowdon in heated clash at Gas2Gove meeting By MARJO HALLOWELL A MEETING between the East Arnhem Regional Alliance and Member for Lingiari Warren Snowdon (right above) became somewhat heated when he was asked questions as to whom the Alliance should to be consulting at a Federal level. Mr Snowdon had been speaking to the Alliance when East Arnhem Chamber of Commerce chairman David Suter (left above) asked him whom the Alliance should be approaching to express their concerns. Mr Suter was asking as Mr Snowdon earlier admitted he was not privy to conversations about the building of a pipeline for the gas. When Mr Snowdon said they should “talk to me”, Mr Suter questioned him and again pointed out that he had earlier admitted he was not part of the discussions. Mr Snowdon became very volatile, loud and used offensive language in his heated response and Mr Suter also become very emotive. Mr Snowdon said he had known Mr Suter for many years and said: “I know
how full of sh.t you are”. When the exchange abated Mr Snowdon assured the Alliance that he would make representations of behalf of the people and businesses of Gove to the Ministers involved - Minister for Resources and Energy Martin Ferguson and Minister for Regional Development Simon Crean. He said: “It is not a done deal and ultimately it is up to the Prime Minister and is a Cabinet decision.” Earlier he had said the issue was with the NT Government as they had to guarantee 10 years’ gas supply. “It will then be up to the Federal Government to underwrite the pipeline. “We’ll know in a fortnight (if the NT guarantees the gas).” He said they would need to look at the options if the gas could not be guaranteed. “It hinges on whether a gas supply is guaranteed by the Chief Minister (Terry Mills) and I am confident they will get it.” He asked for a specific list of what services will be gone and asked the Alliance to wait for two weeks before they made any further moves.
He wanted a report on the value to the economy of local businesses and asked the Alliance to gather that information and also advise him on who would stay and who would go if the plant was mothballed or closed. Contingency plans would be discussed with Mr Crean, and Mr Snowdon said he would be holding discussions in Canberra this week. “I’ll be very surprised if there is no pipeline,” he said. Local Member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker said she was aware of potential buyers of Pacific Aluminium once the gas was secured. Also at the meeting was Denise Fincham who had earlier last week met with Simon Crean and senior advisors and she said he was acutely aware of what was happening in the region and he was to discuss gas supply with Chief Minister Terry Mills. “They are all over the issue and have a full understanding on the impact in the region,” she said. When she later suggested the Alliance speak directly to Martin Fergusson, Mr Snowdon responded: “I don’t care who you ring”.

Banubanu a winner at Brolga Awards Helen Martin and Trevor Howsie providing memorable experiences for their guests. ECO-RESORT Banubanu has taken out the Tourism NT Business Growth Award at the Brolga Northern Territory Tourism Awards. The resort on Bremer Island was originally a fishing resort but, in the last few years, has switched its target market and now also includes special offers for local visitors. Member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker said: “Helen (Martin) and Trevor (Hosie) are so thoroughly deserving of recognition in the Brolga Awards.” “They have worked hard to develop a product which is unique, highly personalised and located in a spot which makes Banubanu an absolute gem. “With a renewed emphasis on tourism under the new government’s
three hub economy, this will help to put NE Arnhem Land on the map. “However, there needs to be greater investment into the region to help support and grow the current operators within EALTA including the relatively new and emerging eco cultural tourism products that Banubanu and Lirrwi have to offer,” Ms Walker said Minister for Tourism\ Matt Conlan congratulated the winners of the 26th Brolgas. The Brolga Awards recognise and encourage tourism businesses that strive for excellence. “The Brolga Awards shine a light on one of our most important industries,” Mr Conlan said. “Tourism in the Northern Territory is world-class, we need to acknowledge those businesses
which maintain our reputation and ensure tourists keep coming back. “Tourism is one of the largest employers in the Territory; it is an industry we can grow and expand.” All business category winners of the 2012 Brolga Northern Territory Tourism Awards will be finalists in the 2012 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards to be held in Hobart in February 2013. A short boat ride from Nhulunbuy, it is the ideal location for a weekend or mid-week escape and more businesses and social groups are now availing themselves of the facility for parties, girls’ time out and now Christmas parties. Banubanu is also accredited with Ecotourism Australia.

QantasLink upgrades regional aircraft GOVE passengers are to benefit from a major upgrade program by QantasLink. The first QantasLink Boeing 717 (B717) aircraft to be reconfigured as part of a multimillion dollar interior upgrade program took to the skies last week providing customers with increased levels of comfort. QantasLink is upgrading its entire fleet of B717 aircraft. This includes removing all existing seats and installing 125 new ergonomically-designed seats featuring an adjustable headrest. The B717 aircraft are primarily used to link Brisbane and Perth with destinations in regional Queensland and Western Australia - connecting towns, cities and communities. These aircraft operate out of Gove to Cairns and Darwin 14 times per week.
QantasLink’s Executive Manager John Gissing said this week marks the first flight of the reconfigured Boeing 717 aircraft. “QantasLink is committed to serving regional Australia and its communities by investing in a modern fleet,” Mr Gissing said. “Boeing 717 aircraft are a vital part of the QantasLink fleet and are used on 17 destinations across our network, including Gove. “Our refreshed Boeing 717 aircraft will not only provide our customers with an improved onboard experience, it will also provide them with access to more seats at peak times. “These new aircraft interiors are aligned to Qantas’ contemporary styling and we expect these changes to be very popular with our customers.” The upgraded interiors will also feature
new carpet, a top-mounted magazine box in front of each seat to maximise legroom, and an additional seat pocket. QantasLink’s second reconfigured aircraft is expected to enter into service in late December. Currently QantasLink’s B717 fleet operates to a number of domestic destinations including Paraburdoo, Port Hedland, Broome, Karratha, Newman, Gladstone, Mackay and Rockhampton. QantasLink is a key part of the Qantas Group and Australia’s largest regional airline. It was named Regional Airline of the Year for 2012 by Air Transport World. Servicing 56 destinations, QantasLink grew capacity by 15 per cent across its network this year.

YIRRKALA band East Journey has returned home after a series of successful performances in eastern states. They returned last Tuesday night after performing in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne at the Australasian World Music Expo. There they met with music industry movers and shakers, touring events groups and festival and music coordinators from Australia and international arenas. East Journey also performed at the Seymour College for three different age groups, with interactive dances and question and answer sessions, sharing their knowledge about culture, language, music and education, and working with schools will be a big emphasis in 2013/14. East Journey is fast becoming recognised as the ‘next big thing’ in Indigenous music with their music at the National Indigenous Music Awards being described by Rolling Stone Magazine as ‘explosive’. East Journey formed in October, 2010, made the independent album Guwak and one EPK documentary Music is in our Blood. They had a lot of fun making the video clip for Song of Arnhem Land
which was nominated for National Song of the Year, and NT Song of the Year, and featured in Qantas inflight entertainment during the month of September. The music video for Ngarrpiya won the NT Music Video of the Year at the National Indigenous Music Awards in August 2012. Mandawuy Yunupingu presented East Journey with the GR Memorial Burrarwanga Award at the same awards ceremony. East Journey also currently work on a language, literacy and numeracy program with inmates from the Sydney Correctional Centre, using music as a tool to discover new ways to engage people in vocational education and training, through the Jailbreak Health Project program, and aim to visit correctional facilities in 2013. East Journey’s backing vocalist Malngay Yunupingu will be travelling with Yothu Yindi (as he is part of that band also) when the band is inducted into the Hall of Fame at the ARIA’s and to perform together one last time. Rrawun Maymuru, lead singer for East Journey, and writer of the hit song Bayini for Gurrumul, also toured overseas with Yothu Yindi in their hey day.

Last week, November 19, a male was charged when he collected a parcel containing 3kg of kava which had been posted to him from Melbourne. He has been summonsed to appear at Nhulunbuy Magistrate’s Court in December. In a separate incident on November 11, two men, 61 and 22, had flown to Nhulunbuy from Gapuwiyak and also collected parcels containing kava from the Post Office. There were no injuries and no one is to be charged over the accident. Service delayed after bird strike
THE Qantas flight to Gove last Wednesday night, November 21, was delayed by several hours due to a bird strike. Qantas flight QF1944 travelling from Cairns to Gove to Darwin was delayed due to the aircraft being involved in a bird strike on an earlier flight. A Qantas spokesperson said: “The incident occurred in Ayers Rock where an engineer inspected the aircraft. “Following the inspection the aircraft resumed scheduled services including flight QF1944. “Qantas apologises for any inconvenience this delay caused its customers.”
It’s that time of year: Snakes on the lookout for food Dave Suter with a snake with a liking for chook eggs. AS the Wet approaches there is an increased number of slithery creatures looking for food. The first point of contact for anyone sighting a snake in an area where they are not welcome is Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation. Last week East Arnhem Pest Control caught an olive python in a local chook pen. David Suter said people needed to be aware of what was around at the moment and not leave food lying around outside and said the Dhimurru had called him to remove the snake from a resident’s yard. “People with chooks should be especially mindful as their eggs are a treat for snakes,” he said. It was taken to bushland where it was released.

Water restrictions changes WATER levels are seasonally low at the end of the dry season and it is a challenge to draw water from the bores as the levels drop. Generally flows are slower and at this time there is also greater water usage by the town, especially sprinkler use as the ground itself is dry. A spokesperson for Pacific Aluminium said the usual town capacity is 300m3 however with increased usage at the moment the town peaks around 550 - 600m3 per hour. As a result there is increased pressure to increase flows to the town and the pipes struggle to meet the demand and the water is drawn down from town water tanks. “Town water tanks are the main source of water for the town and need to be at certain levels to ensure sufficient water is available to service all the town needs, but especially in case of an emergency,” she said. “Once the tanks go below 30 per cent there is not enough water for the town in the event of a fire which reduces the safety of the town.” Gove Operations, with the support of NCL and LJ Hooker, are introducing new water restrictions which will enable residents to continue to use sprinklers while allowing the business to better manage peak period usage and more efficiently maintain the safe operating levels of water tanks. “We will continue to maintain current sprinkler water restrictions 5pm - 9pm daily, however new restriction are in place to residents based on household Sprinkler restrictions will soon be changing to odds-andnumbers.” Odd-numbered houses water Wednesday, Friday evens. and Sunday; and Even-numbered houses water on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday This is designed to be a permanent change to water • Water is an important resource to both the restrictions to reduce confusion within the town and community and Gove Operations and we have to use it to encourage a change of mindset prior to 2013 dry responsibly. season. • Need to minimise the draw on the water system and This will reduce peak flows, ensure sufficient water restrict water usage to using sprinklers as per the odd in towns to increase safety of the town and will reduce and even numbered housing system. the number of total sprinkler or full water bans. • We need to act now and restrict our water usage “We appeal to all community members to support • Reducing water use will ensure there is sufficient the new watering regime,” she said. water in the town water tanks to service the town in the “If we all play our part in responsible water event of a fire. management we will all be less effected by ad- hoc • Ensure the safety of you and your family by sticking sprinkler bans and be contributing to responsible with the water restrictions management of our water resources.”

Backing for new Marine Park << From Page 1 Dhimurru looks forward to being part of this process to ensure Traditional Owners and Custodians are at the forefront of any management outcomes in the future. Dhimurru said the conservation considerations, which lead to the declaration of this area, include the important resting area for turtles between egg laying (inter-nesting area) and internationally significant foraging habitat for breeding aggregations of the common noddy, roseate tern and crested tern. The Wessel Marine Reserve also includes examples of key ecosystems and ecological features which are considered examples of high conservation values and should be included in a national reserve system. The Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club (NRSFC) is also pleased that their input was taken on board and are quietly confident that the final sign off will meet all requirements from the green, commercial and recreational sectors. The Project Officer of the NRSFC Peter Cox said the Northern Marine Protected Area second consultation process for the Northern Territory was released mid-year. “Unfortunately, the only green zone proposed for the Northern Territory’s Northern MPA was placed directly over a local and very popular bill fishing area, southeast of the Wessel Island group,” Mr Cox said. “The area in question is approximately 5500 sq km in size, 80nm north of Nhulunbuy, adjacent to the East Arnhem Land Region. “As soon as this had been announced, the NRSFC and Northern Territory Game Fishing Association (NTGFA), with the support of Amateur Fishermens Association Northern Territory (AFANT) launched a campaign to promote an alternative proposal. “A larger green zone east of the initial area was identified covering an estimated 9,000 sq kms. “
As the initial green area had not been listed by the Marine Division as an area of interest during the lead up to the consultation process, the NTGFA was able to argue that this non-disclosure was outside of the agreed process. “By suggesting an alternative area, we provided an opportunity for the Marine Division to shift the proposed green zone away from the popular bill fishing area. “Not being content with gaining back the bill fishing area, the NRSFC and NTGFA also successfully extended the limited fishing zone another 5000 sq km south of the regional township of Nhulunbuy towards Groote Eylandt waters,” Mr Cox added it was pleasing to see that the campaign coordinated by the NRSFC and NTGFA, and supported by AFANT and recreational anglers across the NT successfully promoted an outcome acceptable to all parties. “Although there is a third and final step in this process, we are quietly confident that the final sign off will meet all requirements from the green, commercial and recreational sectors,” Mr Cox said. Collectively, the new marine reserves will add more than 2.3 million square kilometres to Australia’s marine reserve estate and they will be managed primarily for biodiversity conservation. The Commonwealth waters start about three nautical miles from the coast and extend to approximately 200 nautical miles out to sea. The inner coastal area which includes the sea from the coast to three nautical miles is managed by the state and territory governments in conjunction with local management agencies such as Dhimurru. letters to the editor Heartfelt thanks from Tania for G Spot fundraiser TO all the organisers, the girls and boys who supported this wonderful event that was the G Spot Revisited. We would like to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your support. It has been a great support to know we have the love and thoughts of the people of this beautiful town of Nhulunbuy. We love this town for the way it comes together and support those in need of a little bit of love and care. I am doing great. I just have to overcome this last hurdle and then we will be on the home straight. Thanks and love to everyone. Tania Peters and Russell, Darcy, Quinn and The Bogan Ballerinas: Kristy Maggs, Caren Erasmus, Kelly Murray, Stacey Wise and Sonya Campbell added some Kelly Jorgensen colour and laughter to the G Spot Challenge Revisited.
Bipartisan approach to secure a gas supply THE biggest issue on people’s minds in the community remains the future of our region while we await the outcome of Rio Tinto and Pacific Aluminium’s strategic review. I have no doubt our federal MP, Warren Snowdon, has taken back to Canberra and the cabinet table, a strong message at grassroots level from this community about the imperative to bring gas to Gove. I have also communicated directly with Chief Minister Terry Mills and, ‘though we sit on opposite sides of parliament, we share a very firm commitment to ensure a strong and viable future for the region. I know Terry to be sincere when he tells me that the NT Government are ‘leaving no stone unturned’ and that he remains ‘hopeful’ of securing gas. There is bipartisan support and the suggestion that the bid to secure gas may be jeopardised because the seat of Nhulunbuy is not held by the CLP government is nonsense.

Wild About Gove
BUT the bipartisanship ends there. Territorians are rightly up in arms about massive increases to power, water and sewerage tariffs. Having come to the election on the back of a cost-of-living platform then to turn around and slug people with 30 per cent price hikes shows how out of touch with reality the new Government is on this front. Businesses, service providers and households will all be hit. Though a sector of our community enjoys employment conditions which mean they don’t pay power bills, we will feel the impact, knowing cost of living in remote areas is already much higher. With power bills to increase for our schools, hospital and health clinics, what programs and how many jobs in education and health will be cut to cover the big increase in operating costs? How will businesses cover their increased ANDY Macgrath took these two shots on the night of the full moon over Gove on October 30. ARTS
Arnhem Land art heads to far-off lands By MATT GARRICK A FAMOUS Frenchman, an Australian actor and a safari club owner from Paraguay all entered an art gallery in Darwin. It reads like the beginnings of a lame joke. But in actuality, the anecdotes are true. During recent years, the Mason Gallery in the Top End’s muggy capital has hosted the likes of French film-star Gerard Depardieu and Aussie thespian Jack Thompson, who stopped by to view some of the best Aboriginal art from Arnhem Land on offer. Gallery owner Debra Mason said it was often hard to predict where the next buyer of the remote region’s artwork might hail from. “I recently had a large sale go to Paraguay. It was for a wild safari club over there, and they bought Arnhem Land paintings and Tiwi sculptures. “They’ll be a nice touch to showcase in their club,” she said. Since Arnhem Land started to gain a reputation in the 1970s for producing some of the boldest and most -inventive Indigenous art in Australia, famous figures and collectors of exotic objects have flocked
through the doors of NT galleries in droves. And much of the industry’s success has been due to clever marketing by stalwarts of the Territory’s art scene over the years. One such marketeer is Shirley Collins, who is in no small way responsible for getting Arnhem Land culture firmly into international focus. “I was part of the initial explosion of desert art,” she said. “We’d go along in the four-wheel-drive all through Arnhem Land, sitting in the camps, writing the stories, categorising and marketing the qualities and pricing of the art.” Collins was also arguably the first person of Aboriginal heritage to operate an art gallery in the NT. “My mother was from the Stolen Generation from the Borroloola area. “Hence, I had the background of Aboriginal culture, but when I started I didn’t really think I had the knowledge to understand all the arts of Aboriginal culture throughout Arnhem Land,” she said. Decades later, Shirley has worked alongside and marketed artworks by the who’s who of desert culture, and today her knowledge is as deep
as the Arafura. She said despite a current slump in the industry, blamed on problems in the global economy, Arnhem Land artists continued to thrive and evolve. “It’s slowed down a lot compared to the early days. But there are still plenty of artists who are emerging and developing and coming out now,” she said. Nowadays Shirley works as an advisor at the Mason Gallery. Deb Mason, daughter of the gallery’s deceased founder, Reg Mason, said Shirley’s mentorship into marketing desert art has been priceless. “Without her assisting me, I wouldn’t have been able to go any further,” said Mason. Equipped with this knowledge, Mason advised up-and-coming Arnhem Land artists on how to find success in today’s modern market. “Keep your quality as high as possible. Make sure you know your stories as good as your father or grandfather, and make sure you get yourself known,” she said. And judging by recent clientele, you never know just who might buy it. You have done something similar. Romance. The Moon/Ceres Midpoint in your sign will help to make you especially responsive to your partner’s feelings this week.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) Don’t rush to tell everybody what you have been up to. If you can keep quiet for a little bit longer, you may be able to get away with it! Romance. You may be surprised how independent some members of your family are becoming! This independence may lead to friction, unless you are flexible.
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) A friend who thinks that he knows more than you may actually know less. Don’t ignore your own judgement. You’ve done the necessary reading. Romance. Map out your route to avoid this. Romance. You may be upset because of a recent let-down. Don’t respond until you have had a chance to relax. Maybe it was for the best.
VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)
A difficult decision could create some stress for a while. So long as you ignore other people’s advice, you are unlikely to go very far wrong. Romance. Concerns for financial security will be important in your relationship over the next few weeks. Make the necessary cuts where you can.
LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd)
QUOTE OF THE DAY
“
“
Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one. – Malcolm Forbes
SOLUTIONS No. 126
Don’t divulge too much information about yourself. The more you tell, the nosier others will become! If you want something to remain private, keep it to yourself! Romance. Your partner will be very impressed by a warm-hearted gesture. Make it on the spur of the moment to make it more remarkable.
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) A member of your family who has been difficult recently may suddenly start to behave a little better. Don’t be too suspicious of the change! Romance. Don’t be afraid to jettison an idea which has lost its usefulness. You may need to ignore other people’s advice. Taking your own advice will be more worthwhile.

ARE dingoes the top dog in the Australian bush and do they have a role in protecting our native biodiversity against the impacts of feral cats? A new study led by James Cook University researchers and published in the Journal of Applied Ecology, suggests that dingoes may be keeping feral cats at bay in northern Australia, and preventing them getting free access to native wildlife. Leila Brook, a PhD Candidate in JCU’s School of Marine and Tropical Biology, said previous studies had suggested dingoes could suppress foxes and feral cats by attacking and killing them. However, cats could still be found where there were plenty of dingoes, she said. “That makes it easy to argue that dingoes make no difference to cats, but cat behaviour might be limited in the presence of dingoes, in ways that could reduce their impact on native animals,” Ms Brook said. Researchers from JCU, the University of Tasmania and Deakin University surveyed pairs of large cattle properties across northern and central Australia, where one property controlled dingoes using1080 poison baiting and sometimes shooting, and the other left dingoes alone. “This design allowed us to measure the effects of predator control on dingoes, and test how reduced dingo numbers might affect feral cats,” she said. “We found that predator control may be doing more than just reducing dingo numbers, it might actually change their behaviour and effectiveness as a top predator in the Australian food chain. “We found that as dingoes were removed in higher numbers using poison baiting, cats were recorded at higher rates, suggesting that cat populations can be larger in areas with fewer dingoes.” The researchers also looked at the predators’ activity patterns. “Dingoes and feral cats both eat nocturnal mammals that come out at dusk

ENTRANTS and sponsors of the 2012 XXXX Gold Gove Game Classic attended the Nhulunbuy Regional Spots Fishing Club rooms recently to congratulate the winners of this year’s event. Organisers were pleased to confirm that 26 sponsors fished the event this year, a record participation rate for the event and a strong sign of support for the community and club. After eight days of fishing the entrants returned to dry land to see who had taken the Championship prizes and swap yarns and tall tales of what went down during the tournament. Anglers fished in teams of two, three, or four entrants and were able to select their days, with many splitting their fishing with a lay day or two between days on the water. Organisers were interested to see that there were always six or seven teams out on the water at any one time. So after many hours of fishing several winners were announced last Saturday evening. Sailfish were tagged and released by Bernice Cox, Steve Mackie, Ian McKay and Ralph Pellenat, with Ralph, Vjek Puljic and Todd Hannaford tagging a black marlin each. Winning billfish angler was Ralph Pellenat and winning billfish team was Ralph Pellenat, Bernice Cox and Les Telfer. Savanne Canobie, on Ulua Gove, won champion junior angler, while Bernice Cox won champion adult female. Champion male angler was Vjek Puljic, from Brisbane. Champion boat under six metres was Team Streaker while champion boat over six metres was Team Clean Sweep. Team points were Clean Sweep 9650pts, XXXX Gold1 2850 pts, True Blue 2000 pts, Ulua Gove 1150 pts, Reelax 700 pts, Streaker 700 pts, and Team Wet Dreams 400 pts. Thanks to our great sponsors who continue to support the club and the many tournaments and activities. A full breakdown of winning entrants and team is available up at the NRSFC Clubhouse. Call up to the next monthly meeting on Tuesday, December 4, to snap up a pre Christmas bargain of tournament or club shirts and coolers.
