NEWS FOR EAST ARNHEM LAND, INCLUDING NHULUNBUY AND YIRRKALA
$2 – EDITION 932, 27 Mar - 2 Apr 2013
Harmony in the classroom RELIGIONS and cultures came together in unity last week, as schools of the region celebrated Harmony Day. Both Nhulunbuy High and Nhulunbuy
Primary looked like multicultural marketplaces when locals hailing from the countries of India, Papua New Guinea, Jamaica, New Zealand and many more
engaged students in some of their creative cultural practices. Pictured here are Nhulunbuy High students Ellie Misob, Maddy Slatter, Ila Ani
and Ny Nyamazana painted in traditional Yolngu body art of East Arnhem Land. More photos from the festivities inside on pages 10 and 17.
Government shaken: But gas plans not stirred By MATT GARRICK ALTHOUGH Canberra is a good 3000km as the crow flies from Gove, the region has still felt the ripple effect from the Federal Labor Government’s recent turmoil in Parliament House. With a Gas-to-Gove agreement yet to be underwritten by the Federal Government, locals have expressed unease over the plans getting lost in
political purgatory, as it gets changed hands from minister to minister. Former Federal Minister for Resources Martin Ferguson, who was responsible for underwriting the Gove gas pipeline agreement, stood down from his position last week in response to continued leadership strife that has been plaguing the Labor party. Just days before this, his office
had sent out a media release stating Labor would continue working with Rio Tinto and the Northern Territory Government, with a view to ensuring the long term viability of the Gove alumina refinery. “Supplying Gas-to-Gove would not only help to ensure the future of the refinery, but also stimulate exploration and development of gas fields across northern Australia,” Mr

Ferguson said. The media release did not state when a pipeline plan would be underwritten by the Federal Government, which would allow construction to get underway. With Mr Ferguson’s departure came the speculation that the plans may get lost in bureaucratic limbo; but politicians, both Northern Territory and Federal, have been quick
to claim nothing will change with progressing Gas-to-Gove. Member for Lingiari Warren Snowdon told the Arafura Times that the resignation of Mr Ferguson from the Resources, Energy and Tourism portfolio would have no effect on the progress of that work for the communities and people of north-east Arnhem Land. Refinery chief calls it a day ONE of the leaders of the Gove business community has announced he’s moving on. General Manager of Gove Operations Frank Willsdon has said family needs in his native United Kingdom have forced him to stand down as the local head of the Pacific Aluminium mine and refinery. He said he leaves with the feeling of having unfinished business. “We’ve had a lot of successes, but there is still a lot of work to do. “My task will be to hand over to my successor, Ryan Cavanagh, from New Zealand, to make sure the good progress we’ve been achieving here continues.” Mr Willsdon’s tenure as General Manager was marked by extreme ups and downs. In 2012, Gove Operations achieved record-breaking figures for alumina production, the best in the history of the business. “A key to achieving that was
having a mantra of stability about the place. “I think in earlier times, there was a very great pressure for production increases because of the G3 investments, but it wasn’t succeeding, and people were chasing maximum plant production on various units on the side. “But we changed that to focusing on stability of operations throughout the site, from front to back, and through that we created greater efficiency and steadily achieved greater production.” 2012 was also the year when Rio Tinto threatened to pull the plug on the refinery due to spiralling costs and the fact it was making a loss, which would have meant the demise of around 800 jobs. “I wouldn’t say I’ve suffered any more stress than anybody else that’s involved here at the refinery, the mine or in the town and the community. “We all got put through the ringer

of the doubts about the future; and now we’ve all had great relief and that weight lifted from our shoulders, with the good news that came out earlier (that the refinery would remain open).” He said if family needs had not dictated his decision to leave, he would have happily continued working on the journey of improving the site and the town. Local Member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker said Mr Willsdon has engaged with the community and the workforce on a level which has been exceptionally honest and genuine. “I thank him for the great contribution he has made. “His capacity to engage with people across all levels of our community has been a hallmark of his tenure and I wish him every success,” Ms Walker said (full comment, page 8). Mr Willsdon said one of the highlights of heading Gove Operations was the can-do attitude of his

Walker slams CLP for ignoring bush LABOR Member for Nhulunbuy and shadow minister for Indigenous Policy Lynne Walker (left) has slammed the CLP Government for “ignoring Territorians living in remote communities during their power price hike backflip”. Ms Walker said the CLP Government have admitted they have no plan or clue how they will reimburse residents in remote communities for their pre-paid power tokens. “The CLP have been far too busy fighting among themselves to worry about people living out bush including our most disadvantaged Territorians. “The admission by the CLP that they have no clue how to reimburse Territorians living in remote communities smacks of a government without a plan.” New NT Treasurer David Tollner (right) released a statement on March 22 acknowledging the fact that all Territorians have recently had to do some heavy lifting with Power and Water tariffs. “Now we need to look at how Government and the Power and Water Corporation will do its bit to drive down costs. “Changes are needed to increase efficiency and establish a commercially sustainable footing.” Some of these changes began this week, with the sacking of the board of the Power and Water

Corporation. “I can confirm the termination of appointments to the Power and Water Corporation Board and the appointment of a temporary Board. These people were selected based on merit, energy and enthusiasm to oversee the reform of Power and Water in the twenty-first century,” Mr Tollner said. Ms Walker said the CLP have been too busy infighting to worry about people living remotely where the cost of living was already much higher. “It is these people, many of whom are disadvantaged, that need these reimbursements the most.” The Government must reduce the price hikes beyond the announced 10 per cent, she said. “Even a 20 per cent increase is too much for people, especially those living in remote communities.”. She called on the CLP to “put the knives away long enough to stand up for the bush” and develop a strategy to refund Territorians from remote communities.
Arrests over riot
THREE police officers were allegedly attacked during a riot in the Elcho Island community of Galiwin’ku on March 16. Two men were arrested over the melee, in which two police car windows were also allegedly smashed. The men, aged 22 and 45, were arrested and police reinforcements were called in after violence broke out, reportedly due to confusion relating to court dates. Community educator and author on Elcho Island Richard Trudgen has said the riot came about after some youths from the community were arrested and taken to Darwin for not appearing in court. “Many community members were very upset. “They feared for their young people in what they see as foreign jails where their people do not know the system.” He said this problem has been identified by many during the last 10 years, but governments have failed to remedy the situation. “They do not have a good grasp of English and are therefore alienated.” Police have said up to 30 people were involved in the disturbance.

ABBA band brings a gas to Gove . . . but only just QUICK thinking and the decision by a “lovely man from the mine” to charter a plane for stranded ABBA tribute band Bjorn Again might just have saved Gove’s open air concert last Saturday night. The comical Swedes did manage to hit the stage, and had hundreds of Goveites swaying in unison to the fun and familiarity of ABBA’s pop favourites, but due to a mishap with their flight, the band almost didn’t make it. One fourth of the group, blonde singer Agnetha Falstart, who apparently hails from the remote Swedish village of Abbaloney, explained through a thick accent how Pacific Aluminium’s Gove Operations boss Frank Willsdon saved the day. “We lost our flight on the way, and they took us to the other side of the country, and we stayed overnight in this awful place that was not close to here. “Then this morning, a lovely man from the mine, he bought a plane for us and he paid for it, and then two very handsome men in pilot uniforms came and picked us up and brought
us here just in time.” The humble Ms Falstart said for a group of such stature, Bjorn Again’s air travel delay should never have happened to begin with. “We should have a lot more respect than what happened to us.” The tongue-in-cheek attitude of the performer was reflected throughout the evening’s uproarious performance, with onstage banter between the four singers keeping the audience in stitches, except during the times when they were too busy dancing. The open-air concert was hosted by Pacific Aluminium as a way to say “thank you” to the residents of Gove for their patience and understanding through the difficult period of waiting to find out if the town’s refinery, and major employer, would remain open. Mr Willsdon said during a speech on the evening that securing a long-term future for Gove and the surrounding communities had been a wonderful achievement. “Many said to me they felt such an overwhelming sense of relief when that news came out about the

Government shaken: But gas plans not stirred << From Page 1 “I and the Federal Government stand by the commitment to work with Rio Tinto and the NT Government towards the construction of the gas pipeline for the Gove refinery.” In a Letter to the Editor, Mr Snowdon said the Gillard Labor Government has made firm commitments to continue working to keep the refinery operating. “The future may hang on the construction of a critical gas pipeline and a 10-year deal to supply gas to the refinery,” Mr Snowdon said (full comment, page 8). The Northern Territory Government, which has also been
subjected to a radical cabinet shake-up and changeover of Chief Minister in recent weeks, have also reiterated that changes in government would not alter Gas-to-Gove agreements. NT Minister for Infrastructure Peter Styles visited Gove last weekend, where he attended Pacific Aluminium’s open-air concert, held to celebrate the Territory’s agreement with Rio Tinto to keep the alumina refinery open, made in late February. Mr Styles said he didn’t think the upheaval in Federal Government would hurt progress. “When the Federal Government, or any government, makes commitments, if a portfolio changes, the
paperwork that’s in front of one minister is basically in there. “If they’re signed off by a previous minister, then they’ll commit to doing what the previous minister and the cabinet decided to do.” “I’m sure that they will come good on their bit, and assist us with the building of the pipeline, so we can get Gas-to-Gove. “And we’re hoping that’ll happen sooner than later.” The government media release last week stated that, with due diligence and feasibility studies into the project planned to be completed by December, 2013, gas was expected to be supplied to Gove by early 2016.

Troopie trapped in croc-infested river AN ARNHEM Land family were left with a sinking feeling recently after their Troop Carrier became partially submerged while attempting to cross the East Alligator River. Police requested the assistance of West Arnhem Shire Council staff and their big rig loader after several vehicles, including a tractor, were unable to tow the car back across. Shire Works Officer Gabby Gumurdal drove the loader that rescued the vehicle. “I was at home (Gunbalanya) and someone came down and asked me to go to
the river as I am one of the operators of the loader,” Mr Gumurdal said. “So I jumped in the loader and went down, and there was a Troop Carrier belonging to a family from Maningrida stuck in the middle of the river. “At this stage the family had already been rescued but the car was still in the river. “I drove out there, and, as the loader got closer to the back of the Troop Carrier, a chain was tied around it and I backed the car up to the Gunbalanya side of the crossing. “The tide was coming in so
we had to hurry.” Several large saltwater crocodiles are known to inhabit the area around the crossing, which is a vital link between Arnhem Land communities like Maningrida and Gunbalanya and Darwin. The crossing is often closed until April, however the unusually low rainfall this year has seen the crossing opened up to traffic periodically. Residents should check access at http://kakadu.com. au/access before attempting to cross this point of the Arnhem Highway.

More than 80 per cent of the Northern Territory is now under application for unconventional oil and gas exploration, including most of Arnhem Land. While traditional owners can legally veto plans by Paltar Petroleum to frack their land, they have no rights over the deep sea. Mr Mason, a traditional owner of land in the Crocodile Islands, west of Milingimbi in East Arnhem Land, was one of the meeting organisers. He told the assembled traditional owners to “just say no.” “They’re going to rape your land, so you’ve got to get strong and hold your land and say no, I’m not going to sell my land,” he said. Concealed kava revealed in big bust

POLICE from the Remote Communities Drug Desk have seized 320kg of kava in three separate busts following a month-long operation targeting the supply of the drug into East Arnhem Land communities. Acting Commander Tony Fuller from the Crime and Specialist Support Command said the kava was secreted into drums and a compressor in a bid to conceal detection. "160kg were discovered inside the compressor and 130kg were found in two 44-gallon drums both destined for the same community. "Northern Territory Police, Customs and the Australian Federal Police continue to work together targeting this Territory issue." A 43 year-old woman was arrested following a third bust on Friday, March 22, when she was allegedly found
in possession of 30kg of kava in her baggage. "This woman has made several trips to the Northern Territory in the past and investigations are continuing into this case." "Police estimate the value of the seized kava to be $320,000 if sold in the remote communities." Acting Commander Fuller said it is always disappointing to find people profiteering by the distribution and sale of illicit substances in remote communities and said public assistance was very helpful to police in combating this behaviour. Anyone who has any information or knows something about the transportation and sale of drugs anywhere is encouraged to contact police (131 444) or Crime Stoppers (1800 333 000).

Man found dead at sea A 53-YEAR-OLD man of Filipino descent was found dead on a freight vessel bound for China, after loading cargo at the Pacific Aluminium refinery dock in Gove. The man’s body was discovered onboard the vessel about five hours after it had left Gove. It was then forced to return, where Nhulunbuy police assisted with the removal of the man’s body. Police are not treating the death as suspicious, and are working with the Chinese Embassy to help return the man’s body to his home country. A coroner’s report will be compiled in relation to the matter. WOMAN HURT IN VAN ROLLOVER POLICE attended the scene of a vehicle rollover on an open field in the outskirts of Nhulunbuy on Monday, March 18. The vehicle, a white van, had rolled over in a large, open dirt block in the bush near to the intersection of Melville Bay Road and the Central Arnhem Highway. Occupants of the vehicle walked away from the accident with one, a 17-year-old woman, receiving medical treatment for minor injuries.

The vehicle sustained considerable damage, although police said alcohol On The was not a contributing factor to the crash. Beat Investigations into the matter are continuing. with FRIDGING PROWLER RESIDENTS have been urged to NT remain vigilant about securing their outdoor refrigerators, after beers were Police stolen from a property on Pandora Circuit on Sunday, March 17. Reports have alleged that an unknown offender entered the property within the Nhulunbuy township area and removed 15 XXXX beer cans from a fridge at the rear of the house. At this stage, no suspects have been identified, however police have reminded residents to keep an eye out for any suspicious persons or behaviour and report it to Nhulunbuy Police Station (8987 1333).
A GROUP of teens who allegedly stole a vehicle from a remote Northern Territory school were “relieved” to see police after ending up stranded without fuel on the road to Numbulwar. Sergeant Andrew Littman from the Numbulwar Police Station said the youths were apprehended by Police after the vehicle ran out of fuel 30 km from Numbulwar. “The youths had allegedly broken into the school where they located the keys to the vehicle. “Their intention was to travel to Numbulwar however they ran out of fuel near Policeman’s Crossing on the Ngukurr access road.”
Four youths between the ages of 14 and 16 and an 18 year-old were taken into custody following the unlawful entry of the local school and the theft of a Toyota Hilux. “Police attended and placed the youths under arrest before putting some fuel in the recovered vehicle and driving it back to Numbulwar,” Sergeant Littman said. He said it was fortunate the group were found when they were as they had no provisions and were suffering various levels of exposure, thirst and hunger. “Their situation could have become very serious and they appeared quite relieved to see police.” Four of those arrested were charged with offences relating to the unlawful entry of the school and theft of the vehicle. One was released to be considered for Youth Diversion.
A wild night of crime on Groote
A STRING of break-ins and damages including two car rollovers have lead to the arrest of five young men on Groote Eylandt. The group of five, all aged between 16 and 21 yearsold, were arrested following the series of unlawful entries and the theft of two motor vehicles. Officer in charge of the Alyangula Police Station Anthony Deutrom said two of the offenders were alleged to have stolen alcohol from a private residence in Alyangula at about 6pm on March 19, before gaining access to and unlawfully using a Toyota Landcruiser from a compound near Angurugu. “Police will allege a 21-year-old and a 17-year-old then consumed the stolen alcohol while driving the vehicle to Umbakumba. “Reports that a vehicle was been driven in a disorderly and reckless manner around the community prior to rolling over were received by police.” He noted that by the time officers found the vehicle, the offenders had already left the area. Senior Sergeant Deutrom said later in the evening the offenders returned and again stole the same vehicle. “The vehicle was driven back to Angurugu where police will allege a number of co-offenders were picked up and transported to a local business where they have forced entry and stolen a quantity of alcohol. “Later the group were alleged to have entered another compound near Angurugu where they stole a laptop and the keys to a Jeep Cherokee which was subsequently stolen.” Senior Sergeant Deutrom said the Landcruiser was then rolled a second time near Angurugu in which a 17 year-old received injuries. “The youth was flown to Darwin in a stable condition, and was very lucky not to have been more seriously injured.” Four alleged offenders were arrested at the scene. Senior Sergeant Deutrom said more arrests were anticipated, and the Jeep had not yet been found. He said police were disappointed with the recent property offending, and were calling on the community to report any suspicious behaviour in a timely manner.

Aircraft vandalised in Gapuwiyak
IN WHAT police believe was an attempt by a petrol sniffer to locate fuel, an 18-year-old man has been charged over the alleged break-in and vandalism of an aircraft in Gapuwiyak last Wednesday night. Nhulunbuy Police Acting Senior Sergeant Alex Brennan said the offender entered the Gapuwiyak airport at around 6.30pm on the evening. “Police allege the offender attempted to lever open a rear passenger access door of the GippsAero G8 Caravan, and has damaged the door seal in the process. “The alleged offender then entered the aircraft from the front door and removed the control locks, throttle, propeller and mixture controls. “He was charged with damage to property and has been bailed to appear at the Gapuwiyak Court of Summary Jurisdiction April 2.” He said police believed the offender was looking for fuel, as this type of offending was typical of the problems sniffers cause in remote communities.

Entsch wants heads to roll over Barrier Aviation case By MARK BOUSEN MEMBER for Leichhardt Warren Entsch (pictured) says he will make the bureaucrat, he regards as primarily responsible for the demise of Barrier Aviation, accountable, “even if I have to wait to get into Government later this year”. And Mr Entsch also vowed to revamp the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) of which he has been scathing since the airline’s licence was suspended on December 23 and cancelled on March 13. Mr Entsch has slammed CASA, identifying “vested interests” as playing a key role in the airline’s crisis. “It’s a bloody disgrace - there are people in CASA who should be sacked over this,” he said.
“By the time the true facts behind all this come out, the victim (Barrier Aviation) will have been financially destroyed.” (Mr Entsch’s seat of Leichhardt takes in all of Cape York and the Torres Strait and part of Cairns.) Mr Entsch said Barrier Aviation’s 20-year safety record had been ignored in CASA’s “ambush” of the company and confirmed he had called the aviation authority to express his concerns. “CASA are on a ‘go slow’ campaign to send Barrier bankrupt. I have contacted them and tried to expedite the investigation process but they were not interested.” Mr Entsch said the suspension was causing a huge financial, emotional and personal toll, with 50 families reliant on the family-
owned business. “As well as the employees who have worked for them for many years and never had a problem, there are also numerous local businesses that rely on Barrier from Haggerstone Island Resort to Wongai Hotel on Horn Island and

It shows a decline of 16 per cent in the anaemia rate for Aboriginal children aged 0-4 in remote parts of the Northern Territory between 2007 and 2011. The report also showed the hospitalisation rate for malnutrition for children aged up to 14 years has declined by 56 per cent from 2000-01 to 2010-11. Ms Macklin said the results were encouraging. “The Government’s record investment in programs and services to communities as part of the Northern Territory Emergency Response and now Stronger Futures in the Northern Territory is making a difference. “There are now more than 200 additional health professionals on the ground in remote communities, a School Nutrition Program to make sure kids are fed and ready to learn, and regular hearing and dental health checks.” Mr Snowdon, who is also the Member for Lingiari, said the Government was committed to continuing work to improve people’s lives in the region. “These additional services are helping to tackle the chronic levels of disadvantage in remote Indigenous communities,” Mr Snowdon said. “The Australian Government is continuing to work with Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory to tackle the unacceptable levels of disadvantage too many people still experience. “We know that sustained change will take time.” The report also showed a decline in the mortality rate for Indigenous Australians living in the Northern Territory.
pilot training services in Cairns. “I personally have used Barrier on many occasions and they have been outstanding. “But, when the allegations come from a disgruntled employee who was demoted because of circumstances, CASA are denying natural justice.” Mr Entsch said the complaint originated from a former employee who was cautioned and demoted following a number of procedural issues, left the country and then filed a complaint of unfair demotion. The Member for Leichhardt traces the problem as far back as May, 2011, almost two years ago when Barrier Aviatoon lodged a formal complaint, through the director of CASA, that an Airworthiness
Inspector (AWI) lacked the experience to fulfil his role and duties and lacked the ability to correctly interpret CASA regulations. “The matter was referred to the Industry Complaint Commissioner but, as of this time, Barrier has not heard a single word back from them,” Mr Entsch commented. “Given the seriousness of the matter, wouldn’t you think that while it is being investigated, CASA would have allocated another AWI? “But no action has been taken.” Mr Entsch said Barrier Aviation has had no opportunity whatsoever of being able to test any of the information they are charged with including these false allegations. “You do have to ask if there is a vendetta.”
Barrier requests urgent Appeals Tribunal hearing By MARK BOUSEN BARRIER Aviation has requested a hearing before the Administrative Appeals Tribunial as a matter of urgency following the cancellation of its operator’s licence earlier this month by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). The airline’s managing director David Kilin says he is at a loss to understand the attitude of the regulatory body, and called for a review of the organisation. “We underwent two audits last year, and our licence was renewed in late November following those two audits. “Then on December 23, our licence is suspended.” “The audits were carried out in April and October/early November, yet our licence was suspended three weeks after our licence was renewed. “How can that be?” Mr Kilin said: “If you are reading this and you fly on light aircraft, I encourage you to contact your MP to call for an immediate overhaul of CASA, particularly the laws that it is supposed to enforce. “It may be too late for Barrier Aviation due to the crippling cost of this ambush by CASA, but regional Australia depends on light aircraft. “If CASA continues to wipe out small charter aviation airlines, the public and politicians alike, are going to have to get used to driving long distances because there will none left operating.” Mr Kilin continued: “After all of the
work done by CASA last year and the granting of the Operator’s Licence to Barrier in late November, how could the serious alleged (and supposedly ingrained) cultural issues have suddenly appeared? “What could possibly have changed in three weeks? “If Barrier Aviation is such an unsafe airline, why have we got such an impressive safety record spanning over 20 years? We’ve never had a passenger or a crew member harmed any of our flights (doing 15,000 flying hours per year). “Why did CASA refuse to try to resolve any issues? Barrier Aviation have been 100% cooperative every step of the way. “It appears clear that CASA’s objective was to close down Barrier Aviation from the start with no justified reason. Certainly there has been no attempt to resolve any alleged issues or to work with Barrier to get the airline operational again. “The question is why? And is this an abuse of power,” Mr Kilin said. In a media release last Wednesday, CASA said it cancelled Barrier Aviation’s air operator’s certificate on March 13 following a “comprehensive investigation of a wide range of critical safety issues relating to aircraft maintenance”. “The investigation found Barrier flew aircraft with major defects, and in some cases multiple major defects existed on the same aircraft for some time. “The operation of aircraft with serious defects created a serious and imminent risk to air safety.”
FACT FILE APRIL 2012: CASA commenced a scheduled two week audit of Barrier Aviation. AUGUST 2012: CASA reported on the audit. Some issues, Barrier Aviation responded accordingly. Further liaison was required. -OCTOBER 2012: A follow up audit was conducted by CASA in late October/early November. NOVEMBER 2012: Barrier Aviation’s AOC was renewed late November following both audits. DECEMBER 2012: Suspension issued Sunday 23 December (3 weeks after the AOC was issued). MARCH 2013: Operator’s Licence cancelled. 7 March.

Colourful cultural festival is back for 2013 RAMINGINING’S Bak’bididi Festival is the birthplace of one of the Northern Territory’s biggest online phenomenons. Although the remote East Arnhem community is home to only approximately 800 people, over two million viewers have tuned in to YouTube to watch the fantastically quirky Zorba the Greek dance,Yolngu-style, filmed during the festival in 2007. Now the colourful cultural festival is back, with dates for 2013 announced last week. The Bak’bididi Festival, which celebrates the unique mix of traditional and contemporary performing arts, culture, heritage and sporting talents of Yolngu people, is set to be held from September 27 to 29. The festival will again host a range of visual, traditional and contemporary activities with local and nationally-known indigenous artists. Visitors must note that Ramingining is a traditional Aboriginal community with restricted access, meaning a fee for entry may apply. Permission to visit is required by law and can be made through the Northern Land Council directly. Total alcohol restrictions apply. In early stages of planning, the Bak’bididi Festival organising committee is currently seeking expressions of interest for festival partners, sponsors and performers. For more info or to express interest in performing or sponsoring the festival email ramingining@eastarnhem. nt.gov.au, (phone 08 8979 7906), or check out the official Bak’bididi Festival Facebook Page.

Riding through the ups and down of Gove life
THE people of the Top End are a resilient mob, and over the last six months they have done a remarkable job of riding through the ups and downs surrounding the Gove alumina refinery. At the height of the turmoil around new contracts and the continued operation of the refinery, I met with locals on several occasions to speak about their concerns with the Northern Territory Government failing to commit to keep the refinery operating. The indecision and intransigence of the NT Government meant the 1100 employees and
their families were left in the lurch, not knowing whether their jobs, livelihood and their community would survive. The Gillard Labor Government has made firm commitments to continue working with Rio Tinto and the NT Government to keep the refinery operating and to ensure its long term viability. The future may hang on the construction of a critical gas pipeline and a 10-year deal to supply gas to the refinery. A deal which the NT Government had to be dragged kicking and screaming to make at the
Eleventh hour. But credit where credit is due, the deal has been done and everyone in north-east Arnhem Land can breathe a sigh of relief; but the stress and turmoil of the preceding months need never have happened. That turmoil can be shelved home to the CLP Government and former Chief Minister Terry Mills. The Federal Government can reassure the Nhulunbuy community that we are committed to working alongside Rio Tinto to achieve a better, more prosperous future for north-east Arnhem Land
and for everyone living in this wonderful part of the Territory. Warren Snowdon (pictured), Federal Minister for Regional Services Delivery.
Government shake-up will not compromise our future LAST Saturday’s community celebration at Hindle Oval was a huge success if the large crowd of perhaps 2000 people was anything to go by. And how lucky were we with the weather? The afternoon and evening’s entertainment held appeal for everybody and brought back memories for me of the music which featured in my younger years . . . and judging by the audience participation, I don’t think I was alone. The massive free concert, organised and funded by Pacific Aluminium, was a wonderful opportunity to mark the securing of gas to Gove and, with it, the end to many months of uncertainty about the future of the town and the region. Thanks to the many community groups which supported the event; from set-up to clean up, catering, entertaining, and the ever present St John volunteers who kept an eye on everyone. EVENTS in the last couple of weeks with the changeover of people in critical roles have prompted people to ask me if there might be any
threat or compromise to plans which will deliver gas to Gove. The simple answer is no. Terry Mills, the former Chief Minister who secured gas to Gove by allowing 10 years of contracted gas to the NT to be released and on sold to Pacific Aluminium, has gone to the backbenches of the CLP government. In similar political upheaval, Federal Minister for Mines and Energy Martin Ferguson has also moved to the back bench. He was a critical player in the negotiations for the Federal Government to underwrite the construction of the gas pipeline from Katherine into Gove. AND at local level, I’m disappointed to learn that the Gove Operations general manager Frank Willsdon will be departing mid-April for family reasons. Frank has engaged with the community and the workforce on a level which has been exceptionally
honest and genuine and I thank him for the great contribution he has made. His capacity to engage with people across all levels of our community has been a hallmark of his tenure and Electoral News I wish him every by NT Member for Nhulunbuy LYNNE WALKER success. I acknowledge the positive contribution from all three of these men to the critical role they have played in getting gas to Gove, and reaffirm my confidence that, in spite of their departures, the commitments remain solid. I will be in Darwin this week for parliamentary sittings and return home on Good Friday. Best wishes for a safe and happy Easter.
Swap it like it’s hot ERIC’S BLUE MAN GROUP: Government health mascot Eric the Balloon Man visited Gove last week, encouraging locals to swap unhealthy habits for healthier ones. He’s pictured here with some loyal followers at Gove Aquatic Centre.
ERIC the Balloon Man may look like a big, blue bag of fun, but the message he brought to Gove last week was a serious one. Over recent years, Eric’s belly has become way bigger than it used to be, so he’s begun to make some changes in his life - and he’s encouraging others to do
the same. Eric’s campaign motto is Swap it, Don’t Stop it, which he brought down to the Gove Aquatic Centre on March 21, and asked locals to make some small adjustments in their day-to-day lives. The Australian Government health campaign aims to show
Australians how they can take steps to help reduce their waist measurement and improve overall health and wellbeing. The campaign highlights the fact that, as Eric said, “you can lose your belly without losing out on all the things you love”. It encourages people to con-

NEWS LOCAL favourites East Journey are taking over the country one front page at a time. A couple of weeks ago, the Yirrkala band featured on the cover of the Koori Mail - the highest circulating indigenous newspaper in the country. To give an indication of what this can mean for artists, Gurrumul Yunupingu was featured on the cover of Koori Mail long before he was on the cover of Rolling Stone. Front-cover fame aside, the busy lads from East Journey have just undertaken a whirlwind tour of the east coast, playing gigs in Sydney as well as hitting the big stage in front of thousands at the country’s leading world music festival, WOMADelaide, earlier this month. They also dropped into Sydney’s Level 7 Studios, owned by Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns, to lay down their brand new single, Bright Lights, Big City. Having recently returned home, the crew wowed a large crowd of locals when they performed in Pacific Aluminium’s Gove Operations open air concert at Hindle Oval on Saturday, March 23. Before the gig, their amiable acoustic guitarist Arian Pearson took the time to sit down and chew the fat with the Arafura Times for an interview, where he spoke about East Journey’s bright and busy world.
Bright lights burn for East Journey
A moment from East Journey’s visually arresting performance in Gove on Saturday, March 23. INSET: East Journey adourned the front page of indigenous newspaper Koori Mail earlier this month.
You guys have had a few big weeks. How has it been treating you?
our culture and our music. And it was really great; Koori Mail was there, and got some photos off us.
back down to earth in a way. It’s a rock melody mix, more of a Paul Kelly sort-of sound. It’s good.
Are you guys liking the added publicity?
How is it for you guys, who come from such a small community, to spend so much life in the big city?
on time, yeah, it can be hard at times. Adelaide was just a really good experience for us, playing alongside lots of different artists from around the world; it was just an uplifting and a great experience all round. Is it new exposure for you guys to be up on that world music stage? Absolutely; the bigger stage has meant a new level of exposure. For us it was a great learning curve down there, seeing how we can get out there to other people. We were meeting and greeting people from all over the world.e the world. From your performance down there, East Journey ended up on the front cover of the Koori Mail (an independently-owned indigenous news outlet, published nation-wide). We did a workshop down at WOMADelaide, where we did a bit of dancing, and spoke about where we were from. It was sort-of an educational workshop about
It’s pretty good; we’re still trying to get used to all the media and stuff like that, but it’s definitely good. You’ve just recorded your new single, Bright Lights, Big City due out in May. Can you tell us a bit about that?
Yeah, you’ve got to try and balance a bit of both. We’ve got a lot of commitments back at home, with culture, with work, and stuff like that, so it’s good to be able to balance all of that as well as travel around and tour and play music and record. What are the plans for you guys now?
We recorded our new single in Level 7 Studios, in Sydney. The studios used to be owned by Savage Garden, but Daniel Johns from Silverchair recently bought it off them. We laid down the track there.
We’ve got plenty coming up; some gigs down south, in Perth, and we’ve heard there could be a trip to the UK on the cards...so we might be going there next year, hopefully.
How would you describe it?
With ten of you in the band, including dancers and management, is it logistically hard to get around together?
Bright Lights, Big City is about how people in the city these days are rushing all over the place, and time rushes them around, and the world is now moving so fast. Not a lot of people get to sit down and come
At times, it can be very hard. Carrying all the equipment around, and I guess leading up to shows and having meetings and programs, going through programs to always run
Now that you guys have played on big stages like at WOMADelaide, how is it to come back and play in Gove? We always love playing at home, it’s great. All the local people here...it’s great to support things like this in our own community. It’s our ground base, it’s where we come from, and that’s who we are. So it’s great to be here and be able to help out with the town. How’s the future of music around East Arnhem Land looking? There’s lots of talent out here, it’s actually flourishing at the moment. There are heaps of new bands coming out, and that’s what we want to see, and what we want to do. Part of our job is to do workshops with kids and sort-of guide them on to pathways . . . encourage others to keep going with music, and they can see from us how much can be achieved.

HARMONY DAY, march 19, nhulunbuy high school

ON Tuesday, March 19, cultures and religions came together and felt the love of Harmony Day at Nhulunbuy High School. Cultures from countries across the globe including India, Papua New Guinea, Jamaica, France, Thailand, Tonga, New Zealand and right here in Australia were represented during the festivities. Unique parts of these cultures were celebrated and shown to the students, with activities such handicraft making, traditional body art and dance taking place throughout the day. Students from years seven to ten came together in unity with the many cultures for the occasion.

Gapu boys fly high with Swans in Sydney THEY may not have won the AFL Premiership trophy themselves, but, when 15 schoolboys from Gapuwiyak recently held the cup in their hands, it was evident they’d still achieved great feats. The boys had earned their places in a healthy lifestyles excursion which took them to Sydney earlier this month, due to their hard work in community and commitment to school attendance. Healthy Lifestyle Coordinator from Miwatj Health Kevin Bird said the trip had come about due to the community and school of Gapuwiyak focusing on their young people making healthy lifestyle choices. “These boys have been part of a program encouraging education, nutrition, exercise and sustainability since September last year, and it’s culminated in this trip. “We link it very much into behaviours and respect and participating in normal community life, which they do.” While in Sydney, the youngsters took part in a range of healthy lifestyle activities, including rugby union workshops, a barbecue at one of the city’s private schools,Scots College, a hairdressing demonstration and a sharing of their dance and culture.

Upset win throws NRL tipsters Only three tip both AFL winners
THE Titans’ courageous win against the Sea Eagles threw almost every tipster in round three of the Arafura Times/Arnhem Club NRL tipping competition on the weekend. The final game in the round between the Cowboys and the Knights played on Monday night had not been completed at the time the Arafura Times went to press. Only four tipped the Titans to win, and, for the second time in three rounds, no one tipped all eight winners. Nine tipped six of the seven winners – Shaun Dennis, Forbsey, Andres Hoffman,
VanDam, Kaffir, doodlesuckernobagchc, Malkzok1, Baz and Jeremy 4X. The results have resulted in a two-way tie at the top of the tipping ladder, with marlinman and Malkzok1 both on 19 wins. Hot on their heels are Kaffir and Wayno on 18, while Joseph Benn, Shaun Dennis, Tanya Hoffman, Andres Hoffman, Travis Dehnert, Van Dam and Jeremy 4X all sit on 17. The winner of the NRL competition will receive $500 in cash, sponsored by The Arnhem Club and the Arafura Times.
IT’S that time of year again, when our local community starts sporting some crazy hairstyles or going a little rogue with the razor. It’s not some new fad or Hollywood trend, but all in aid of raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. At Nhulunbuy Christian College, students and staff went for both colour and style with all students from Transition to Year 10 involved in this year’s Crazy Hair Day. Teacher Mr Anthony Collier even
shaved half his beard off for the cause. Since the inception of the World’s Greatest Shave annual fundraiser 14 years ago, $138 million has been raised for the Leukaemia Foundation helping provide practical and emotional support to people with blood cancer as well as investing millions in research. Participation in this annual event assists students to develop an awareness of the needs of others as well as raising money for a good cause.
Hair-raising times at NCC
ESSENDON BOMB TIPSTERS SURPRISINGLY, only three tipsters selected both winners on the opening games of the AFL competition on the weekend which is being played over two weekends. Only seven tipped the Bombers to beat the Crows on Friday, while only 14 chose the Dockers to beat the Eagles in the local derby on Saturday. The three atop of the ladder are Duggie, Damo and crackers, while 15 tipsters are on one. The remainder of the almost 50 tipsters
are winless. The AFL winner will walk away with $750 in cash, also sponsored by The Arnhem Club and the Arafura Times. The tipping competitions on both the NRL and AFL will run indepently of each other with separate prizes for both. The Arafura Times/Arnhem Club NRL and AFL footy tipping competitions are free - there is no joining fee and no charges whatsoever are associated with it. The competitions are computer generated, with all selections being lodged to an independent, national footy tipping website.

Luck of the Irish at St Pat’s Day Ambrose before retiring to the clubhouse for a few refreshing Irish ales. The pot of gold at the end of day, based on net score, went to Gus Gomez, Lindsay Waters and Paul
Birch - gross 36/net 24. On a count back for second place was Damien, Nick Twoomey and Wayne Jago - gross 33/net 26. In third place, having to roll the
dice again, was team Wayne and Mary Manager, Tom Edwardson, Karo Ani and Mark Oliveira, with a gross 34/ net 26. The NAGA award team of Scott,
Liz, Kim and Dean may not have played their best golf but certainly looked good around the course. The best dressed team and buggy was “The Clovers” - Gail Palmer, Steven Spears, Jenni and John Peters.
