French beefcake too tough for Croc to swallow

A FRENCHMAN enjoyed a beer at the Gove Boat Club on Sunday night just minutes after being attacked by a 2.5-metre croc, with it taking an hour to convince the professional barrafisherman that he should go to Gove hospital for treatment for his wounds.

Muscly Yoann Galeran, 29, proved to be tougher than a $1 steak when the juvenile crocodile attacked him at around 7.30pm as he swam out to his tinny from the Gove Boat Club - fighting the reptile until he was able to break free from the croc’s jaws.

The man vs croc battle wasn’t over just yet, however, with the croc attacking for a second time with Mr Galeran taking out round two before he was able to scramble to the safety of his aluminium dinghy, Mr Galeran’s skipper ‘Cooch’ told Arafura Times on Monday.

(As readers may be aware, Cooch - a.ka. Craig van Lawick - is the artist behind the Arafura Times comicstrip ‘Muddy River’, which details the life and times of the hapless crocodile Cyril).

Cooch, who is skipper of the commercial barramundi boat Ruby, said his deckhand was returning to

the boat around 7.30pm after spending some time ashore at the boat club on Sunday.

“He had just swum out from the beach to grab the dinghy when the croc came up behind him and grabbed him around the head,” he said.

Cooch said Mr Galeran, who is known as “Yo”, is “not really sure what happened. He just went into survival mode.

“He remembers trying to hit the croc and he wrestled with it a bit . . . got away from it and then it had a second go at him” before he was able to get into the dinghy.

The croc did attempt “to do a roll on” Mr Galeran at one stage, Cooch said, although he was strong enough to get away from this deadly croc maneouver.

“Yo is a strong and fit fella so that was definitely in his favour,” Cooch said.

Arafura Times visited the site of the attack early on Monday morning and talked with local Marty Jones who was with Mr Galeran in the bar of the boat club the previous evening, shortly after the attack.

Dhimurru: Attack avoidable DHIMURRU Aboriginal Corporation, which has the job of capturing the crocodile responsible for Sunday’s attack, says Mr Galeran was “foolish” for swimming after dark.

“We’re upset here at Dhimurru that somebody chose to take that sort of risk,” Executive Officer Steve Roeger told Arafura Times on Monday.

“We all understand that crocodiles are part of our environment and that swimming in the sea at any time, but particularly after dark, is just a very foolish thing to do,” he said.

Mr Roeger said the fate of the crocodile is being discussed with Traditional Owners, but highlighted the possibility that the croc would be euthanised, once it is caught.

“This person’s actions, by provoking a crocodile attack, will result in a number of consequences - not least of all consuming our resources but also requiring some definite action on our part with the crocodile, which would not have been the case if this situation hadn’t been created.

“The options now are to have the crocodile euthanised or relocated to a croc farm, but we all know how expensive that will be so it’s quite likely the animal will be euthanised as there is no way it will be re-released back into the environment once it has been captured,” he said.

COMMUNITY stalwart and local legend John Keogh passed away at Gove Hospital last Thursday, 18 April, after losing his battle with cancer.

The township joined together to celebrate his life only days earlier, with Mr Keogh returning from treatment in Darwin to attend the party on 14 April at the famous HOG Shed, which he co-founded.

Mr Keogh’s funeral will be held this Friday (26 April) at 3.30pm at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Nhulunbuy, followed by a procession to Gove Cemetery for burial.

Mr Keogh, who was 58, was celebrated by the community last week for his contribution to Nhulunbuy, where he has lived since 1978.

As a senior member of the Electrical Trades Union and President of the Nhulunbuy-Yirrkala branch of the Australian Labor Party, Mr Keogh was someone who believed in social justice and who worked as a strong advocate for workers’ rights.

As a co-founders of the HOG Shed through the old bike club, Mr Keogh continued his involvement with the HOG Shed through the East Arnhem Blues Society and always looked at home behind the bar on a Sunday night.

Mr Keogh, in a letter published in the Arafura Times on 10 April, thanked the community for the many displays of support during his tough fight with cancer.

“I will do whatever it takes to bet back to Gove to be reunited with my family and friends to pass this message on personally,” he wrote in the letter.

True to his word, Mr Keogh returned to Gove from Darwin to attend the 14 April celebrations at the HOG Shed, surrounded by family and friends.

Chief Minister Adam Giles to not introduce a gas reservation policy that would have required new projects in the Northern Territory to supply a proportion of their production to local consumers.

Mr Giles announced the decision last Tuesday (16 April), saying such a policy - which was supported by his predecessor Terry Mills - would stifle business and reduce investment opportunity.

“We must ensure our jurisdiction is desirable for investment,” Mr Giles

said.

“Onshore gas exploration is speeding up and the potential in the Territory is remarkable. “ We w i l l n o t b e imposing a blanket gas reservation policy on the industry. Business and government can achieve mutually desirable goals provided businesses are willing to invest,” he said.

“With gas to Gove and the potential to tap in to the national pipeline network, we are confident that investors will choose to do business in the Ter-

ritory.”

Ms Walker labelled the announcement by the Chief Minister as “another policy backflip” by the CLP but said it was the right decision.

“Adam Giles in this case is doing the right thing. I don’t think the Northern Territory is ready for a gas reservation policy as yet. There is not the industry requirement at this stage, nor is there a population base to support it,” she said.

Ms Walker said a gas reservation policy may be

needed at a future time, depending on the Territory’s stage of economic development, but said gas reservation was “not a position Labor holds at this stage”.

“We need to establish and grow the gas industry first by bringing gas to Gove. The deal that has been struck provides gas for Gove for the next 20 years. Within that time we know there will be further exploration and we will also know that there will be further gas reserves,” she said.

G-2-G due diligence ‘by the end of the year’ THE federal government’s Export Finance and Insurance Corporation will have completed due diligence on the Gas-to-Gove project by the end of this year, NT Labor Senator Trish Crossin said last week.

Speaking as guest of honour at the 2013 ‘Business of the Year’ Awards held at the Arnhem Club last Wednesday evening, Senator Crossin said the Labor government was continuing to focus on the project, despite the recent resignation of resources minister Martin Ferguson, in the wake of failed Kevin Rudd leadership challenge last month.

Gove alumina production to fall 22.7% in 2013

By COREY BOUSEN THE temporary reduction in capacity at the Gove alumina refinery, following the shutdown of one of three digestion stages in late February, will reduce Gove’s full year alumina production by 700,000 tonnes in 2013, or 22.7 percent, when compared to the nearly 3.1 million tonnes produced in 2012,

Pacific Aluminium parent company Rio Tinto Alcan announced last week.

In the company’s ‘1Q 2013 Operations Review’, released last Tuesday (16 April), RTA said alumina production from Gove was 599,000 tonnes for the first quarter of 2013, which was down 10 per cent when compared to the same period a year earlier.

The report said the shutdown digestion stage will be back in operation by the end of 2013 following repairs and refurbishment works.

“The temporary shutdown is expected to reduce full year alumina production by 700,000 tonnes compared with 2012,” the report stated.

According to Arafura Times’ calculations, based on Pacific Aluminium’s reported full-year

production of 3,073,000 tonnes in 2012, the 2013 full-year production will be around 2.4 million tonnes when subtracting the announced 700,000 tonne shortfall, which equates to a 22.7 percent fall in production, year-on-year.

Bauxite mining operations at Gove for calendar 2013 are forecast to be steady at around 8 million tonnes, said the RTA Operations

Review, with 1.9m tonnes produced in the first three months of this year.

As previously reported in the Arafura Times, bauxite exports “will be increased to help offset the financial impact of reduced alumina production,” last week’s review said.

No figures on the quantities of bauxite exported from Gove were contained in the report.

THE refurbishment of key equipment at Gove Refinery has begun with the arrival of a heat exchanger unit at an engineering company in Coffs Harbour.

The unit is part of the temporary shutdown of one of three digestion stages at the end of February after inspections identified concerns about the weld integrity on some heat exchangers.

This decision was taken to ensure the safety and integrity of operations at the refinery.

The remaining two digestion stages at the refinery remain in operation. Production at the refinery is reduced by approximately one-third during the period of the shut-down.

Departing boss ‘proud’ of achievements to keep refinery open

Recently departed General Manager for Pacific Aluminium’s Gove Operations Frank Willsdon says he returns to the United Kingdom proud of what has been achieved to keep the refinery open.

THE recently departed local Pacific Aluminium boss Frank Willsdon says he is returning to the United Kingdom proud of what has been achieved in recent months to keep the Gove refinery open for business.

“I am proud of what we have achieved together in keeping the refinery operation going and of those who during troubled times stood up to the challenge and were determined to fight for the business and their town,” Mr Willsdon wrote in the 18 April edition of

Pacific Aluminium’s Gove Community Update publication.

“I leave Gove Operations knowing that we have achieved much success during the last year but also with some regret that there are a number of initiatives I would have liked to have seen completed as we continue on our improvement journey,” he said.

“That said, I have spent time with my successor, Ryan Cavanah, and am sure he will continue to build on the good work that has been done to date.”

Mr Willsdon said he leaves “taking a part of Gove with me and I leave a part of myself here. I wish you all well”.

“As a town and operation we have faced serious challenges over the past 18 months. Initially the divestment from Rio Tinto Alcan to Pacific Aluminium leading to a change of mindset at Gove Operations and a focus on reducing waste and improving our production stability.

“As a result we achieved a greater operational efficiency and a steady

increase in production. We then faced, with anxiety and uncertainty, the outcome of a strategic review. The decision to keep the operation open was met with much relief and celebration,” he said.

Mr Willsdon’s last day of work was 12 April after resigning from Pacific Aluminium to return to his homeland of the United Kingdom “to attend to family matters”.

By COREY BOUSEN SHOWCASING their deadly skills, army reservists from Norforce’s Arnhem Squadron have been undertaking training this month as part of a 10-day activity focusing on water operations.

10 Norforce patrolmen, drawn from across East Arnhem communities, plus five regular army soldiers based in Nhulunbuy, have been undertaking the excercise in preparation for the Australian Defence Forces’ annual Operation Resolute, later this year.

Arafura Times had an opportunity to see a number of the reservists in action on Tuesday, 16 April, conducting a beach landing from a dinghy near Perkins Wharf.

They also practised boarding aluminium dinghies from a LCM8 landing craft that has travelled to Nhulunbuy for the purpose of the training.

Major Tim Robinson, Officer Commanding for the Arnhem Squadron, said the training will run from 11 to 21 April, and was a chance for participants to develop key skills.

The soldiers were due to conduct exercises on Bremer Island from 17-18 April, which involved soldiers participating in a surveillance exercise and conducting foot patrols.

Lance Corporal Jonah Thingle, from Ngukurr community, encouraged other Territorians to get involved with Norforce.

Joining Norforce is a great opportunity “to experience new things, see places and get to make new freinds,” Lance Corporal Thingle told Arafura Times.

Fellow reservist, Private Warren Gaykamungu from Milingimbi, said he had enjoyed the training he’d received in navigation, weapons and first aid during the 10 day exercise.

The quality of the food also received enthusiastic support from the patrolman, with Army Reservist Pru Thomas doing an excellent job cooking for the soldiers.

Major Robinson said Norforce was always interest in recruiting new members from the region.

“Norforce conducts recruiting activity twice a year and the next one will be in October and people who are interested in a career with the Army or Army Reserves can call Norforce on 08 8986 8002,” he said.

At the conclusion of the 10 days of training, the local army community got together for a BBQ at Nhulunbuy Norforce Depot on Friday night (19 April), where a number of awards were announced.

Safety idea will save lives

By COREY BOUSEN IT was just after 6am at the Perkins boat ramp on Saturday and the keen anglers were enthusiastically launching their boats in preparation for what was sure to be a great day out on the water.

On hand were the volunteers from Northern Territory Emergency Services, who were sacrificing their Saturday morning to launch a very important safety initiative that is sure to save lives if the local boating community gets behind it.

Three boat ramps in the local area have had information boards installed that provide safety information and have forms that can be filled in by recreational boaties before heading out for a day on the water.

The forms, once completed, are then put in a water proof letterbox that are part of the information sign.

Should a boat fail to return as planned, the police will collect the form and begin to search in the locations that have been indicated on the form.

The water safety initiative is brought to us by the good people from East Arnhem Remote Safety

Information on the forms includes: • Who is on board, • What type / colour is your vessel, • Where do you intend to travel to, • What time have you departed, • What time do you intend to return, • What are your contact numbers (all people on board), • Who can you contact to notify if you decide to change your plans, • Are you carrying all the required safety equipment required under NT legislation for your type of vessel.

A 23-year-old man is to appear in court in August to face charges of property damage following an incident at the local health clinic.

Superintendent Michael White of the Arafura Division said the man attended the Gapuwiyak Clinic at around 1:30pm last Wednesday in an agitated state.

“It is alleged he then armed himself with a large rock and smashed the windscreens of two clinic vehicles,” Superintendent White said.

“Police attended and arrested the man. He has been charged with property damage and going armed in public.”

False asylum-seeker boat sighting

SEA rangers last week said they were unable to find an asylum seeker boat which was reportedly spotted on an island just off the coast of Arnhem Land.

A local man who gave his name as ‘Bob’ told the ABC on Thursday the boat had been spotted on Entrance Island, just a few kilometres off the coast of the Aboriginal community of Maningrida.

At the time, Customs said it did not have any information about the report.

Ranger boats and a police vessel joined the search on the day.

David Bond, the CEO of the Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation which is based at Maningrida, says he could see Entrance Island and couldn’t see any sign of the boat.

Rural and remote regions are totally neglected: MacFarlane

By COREY BOUSEN COUNTRY Liberals candidate for the Federal seat of Lingiari Tina MacFarlane (right) believes rural and remote areas of the Northern Territory are “being totally neglected” and plans to do something about it if elected to parliament in September.

The New South Wales-born Mrs MacFarlane has been in the Northern Territory for 28 years and lives near Mataranka on the 9500 hectare Stylo Station with her husband, Lyndsay, while her 19 year-old daughter Skye is studying at Charles Darwin University.

High on her priority list is improving things for the nation’s small businesses, which she describes as the “engine room” for the Australian economy.

“I’ve been involved in small business all my working life and I know we need to do something about the amount of red tape small business faces. The government puts road blocks everywhere.”

Mrs MacFarlane grew up on a mixed use irrigation farm and studied agriculture at university.

Her passion for the land has continued throughout her life, and she would like to see more be done to facilitate the development of agricultural industries and exports to Asian markets on the Northern Territory’s door step.

Also on the economic front, Mrs MacFarlane believes there is much to be done to encourage and nurture the mining industry in the Northern Territory, while learning from the mistakes made in other states.

“The mining sector is on the cusp of development in the Territory. We can do thing sustainably while maintaining the integrity of the Territory and strengthening our economy.”

Requiring a 3.5 percent swing against the 12-year Labor incumbent, Warren Snowden, Mrs MacFarlane says she can win the seat if she works hard to travel the vast electorate and listen closely to what the electorate wants.

“If I win it will be a reflection of my hard work in getting out and listening to the community. They are currently being taken for granted.

“We really have to be listening to everyone so that everyone is represented in Canberra and it’s not Canberra dictating to us.

“There’s so much potential to move ahead,” she said.

Mrs MacFarlane was in Nhulunbuy on Wednesday (17 April) to attend the 2013 East Arnhem Region Business of the Year Awards and says she will return in the near future to spend several weeks in East Arnhem Land, where she will “head out to the communities and do some door knocking and meet the people”.

With the likely win by the Coalition in the 14 September election, Mrs MacFarlane said, with Tony Abbott as Prime Minister, there will be a greater focus in ensuring better value for money in spending on Indigenous projects.

“An Abbott government will ensure that the money is being spent on the people on the ground, not being lost in bureaucracy on the way through,” she said.

Tim Broadbent (pictured), the owner of diversified local retailer East Arnhem Trading, whose interests include IGA and Mitre 10, says he has recently secured the franchise for the two locations and he expects the pizzas to be coming out of the ovens “within two months” following a visit to Nhulunbuy by Eagle Boys management last week.

Mr Broadbent already has part ownership of an Eagle Boys franchise through his 50 percent stake in Timber Creek’s Wirib Tourism Park, 285km west of Katherine. He said he decided to go with Eagle Boys due to the quality of the pizzas and the Australiangrown brand being “huge” across the nation.

Plans are underway to transform the Nhulunbuy’s IGA’s Country Fried Chicken floorspace to integrate the Eagle Boys pizza ovens and other equipment, while the Yirrkala outlet will be based at the local IGA and will operate as an Eagle Boys Express Store, which means the pizzas will be pre-made.

Mr Broadbent said there are no plans to operate a home delivery service, although he would consider offering such a service down the track if there was sufficient demand.

Despite East Arnhem Trading’s local operations facing very tough trading

conditions over the past 18 months, with the general slowdown of the local economy, Mr Broadbent continues to work hard on delivering new initiatives.

Negotiations are near complete on plans for the Northern Land Council’s Aboriginal Investment Group to take a 50 percent stake in his business interests.

“The joint venture with AIG is still happening,” Mr Broadbent told Arafura Times.

As part of that venture, a new store will be built at the Gurrumuru turn-off on the Central Arnhem Highway that will also sell fuel.

In a major boost to residents in Gangan, Mirrnatja and Baniyala, East Arnhem Trading is adding facilities that will allow for 24 hour purchase of fuel. Using the new facilities, customers can put credit on a pre-paid card during store operations hours, to purchase fuel at any time of the day or night. Such a system already operates at Gapuwiyak.

Mr Broadbent’s participation in the Wirib Tourism Park is in equal partnership with the AIG, with the group asking him to get involved following “management issues” at the park.

 letters to the editor Four issues affecting Galiwinku’s wellbeing GALIWINKU and Nhulunbuy are connected by kinship, and electoral boundaries.

Here are four issues concerning our wellbeing: 1. The road to the new subdivision, Buthan, is unsafe and creates economic disadvantage.

This residential road is subject to large potholes and corrugations, and is now a foot lower then ground level due to attempts to maintain it with grading alone.

This is the only road connecting the new subdivision built by SIHIP, Buthan, and the main town. Every rent paying resident of the new division must drive this road to go to the shops, get petrol or go to work. The Buthan road needs to be built up and sealed. This is unfinished business from the SIHIP project and its current state is both a road safety issue and further economic disadvantage for Galiwinku citizens. The footpath, which is the only other formal access, is also eroded in low-lying areas.

All roads are generally dilapidated and in an unmaintained condition in Galiwinku. This is despite all car owners paying the same vehicle registration costs as a person in Darwin.

2. As a major economic deterrent, and possibly the greatest

current social inhibitor for Elcho Island, the road from Galiwinku to Gäwa, some 40kms long, is also in a disastrous condition. Car destroying corrugations on this road have at times been 2 inches deep. Other areas are sandy bogs and many parts are half a meter below ground level. The outcome is that most of the population of Elcho Island cannot afford to drive this road, and those who must, like Gäwa school residents, burden extreme maintenance costs for their cars.

Furthermore, because Galiwinku is the Islands service hub, and with the road being unusable for regular travel, the vast majority of the population of Elcho Island (approx. 2000 people) are contained in town, at the Southwest end of the island. Consequently what entrepreneurial opportunities are available on country, outside of the former mission town, are currently out of reach for the average Joe. What’s more, the social, educational and health improvements that would be gained by people being able to live in homelands or access clan estates for recreational purposes are currently severely limited.

3. The post has become irregular and unreliable. In the past years we have received mail three times a week by air. This was a reasonable

service and consistent enough to enable businesses, service providers and citizens to make plans based on mail delivery. It was also regular enough to enable residents to participate in processes like the courts, which rely on letters, and to receive bills in time to pay them.

Since before Christmas 2012 the post has become so irregular we can no longer make plans based on the arrival of mail, participate fairly in state processes or pay bills on time. The cause is that Australia Post assigns Galiwinku mail on a private carrier, whom have business reasons to refuse the carriage of mail on random days when they can make an easier buck.

4. Finally, on a different keel but even more fundamental, Yolngu law cannot continue to be ignored by politicians. It remains that until the Federal and Northern Territory parliaments begin processes to integrate Yolngu systems of authority, institution, statutes and convention, with those of the Australian system, we will continue to see destructive cross-cultural interplay outweigh any positive enhancements to wellbeing and prosperity for the majority of East Arnhem Land citizens. I say this is advance of the Elders of the Galiwinku and Marthakal region, whom I am not so privy to know will soon release

a letter to authorities and the public addressing this very concern.

MANY Indigenous people living in coastal northern Australia would leave their traditional country in order to adapt to climate change, a Charles Darwin University academic has uncovered.

Research led by Senior Research Fellow Dr Kerstin Zander suggests that although living close to the sea was important for their well-being, many Indigenous people would be willing to leave should the threat of severe cyclones increase due to climate change.

Entitled “Stay or leave? Potential climate change adaptation strategies among Aboriginal people in coastal communities in northern Australia”, the research revealed the safety of the respondents’ families was their greatest motivator to move.

“Despite their strong connection to their traditional country, a lot of the cultural aspects of their lives could be carried out in other locations,” Dr Zander said.

“We found that many of those willing to relocate would consider moving inland because they had traditional connections to other regions from either their mother’s or father’s families.

“Indigenous people are traditionally very mobile, and for many it would not be a big issue to move from their coastal homelands in order to adapt to climate change.

“There’s a lot of literature that suggests how vulnerable Indigenous people are, however, the results of this research suggest Indigenous people might be more resilient to climate change than more sedentary societies.”

A key recommendation of the study was to accommodate Indigenous peoples’ adaptation preferences into existing policy to minimise social impacts of climate change. Although many Indigenous people were aware of climate change, they made it clear that other social issues (e.g. unemployment, violence) were currently more important and should be addressed first.

Sea Swift buys Tiwi Barge Services

NORTHERN Australia marine transport provider Sea Swift has acquired Northern Territory-based community sea freight operator Tiwi Barge Services.

Sea Swift will continue to operate two services a week into Tiwi Islands/Bathurst, and is now operating weekly scheduled services into both West Arnhem and East Arnhem, which incorporates Croker, Goulburn and Maningrida, Milingimbi, Lake Evella, Elcho Island and Ramingining.

Outside of the weekly scheduled services, Sea Swift also has vessels that can accommodate for bulk aggregates, large housing modules, and any project related type charters that may be required, up to an impressive 2500 deadweight tonne (DWT).

PHARMACY WINS ‘BUSINESS of the year’ GOVE Amcal Pharmacy was announced 2013 ‘Business of the Year’ for the East Arnhem region at a gala evening hosted by the Northern Territory Chamber of Commerce last Wednesday.

The awards night was held at the Arnhem Club’s Macassans Restaurant and a packed audience of small business stakeholders really enjoyed the opportunity to join together for a night of celebration after the very tough time the local economy has endured over the past 18 months.

Winners on the night were: Service Excellence: Gove Motors Recommended Employer: Yolngu Business Enterprises (YBE) Environment Sustainability: Banubanu Wilderness

Retreat Community Contribution: Nhulunbuy Rotary Club Outstanding Achievement: Nhulunbuy Rotary Club Business of the Year: Gove Amcal Chemist Guest of Honour was Senator Trish Crossin, who gave the audience an update on the Federal Government’s work on the ‘Gas to Gove’ project.

In receiving the Business of the Year Award, pharmacy owner Darryl Stewart said the business has grown significantly since he took over ownership in 2005.

“We now have 16 staff and look after 12 Indigenous Health Centres around East Arnhem Land,” he said.

Rio’s landmark Reef research project sets sail

A SPECIALLY built science laboratory installed on a Rio Tinto bauxite ship has completed its maiden voyage to collect research data along Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

This is the first research of its kind to monitor ocean acidification along the length of the Great Barrier Reef.

In 2012, Rio Tinto Alcan, CSIRO and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation announced a landmark three-year, $1 million research project called Future Reef MAP. The project involves the deployment of an ocean sensor system on a Rio Tinto

vessel that travels between Weipa and Gladstone.

The vessel, the RTM Wakmatha (pictured sailing on the Great Barrier Reef), will continuously collect samples and record data that will help in understanding the impacts of climate change on the Reef.

CSIRO ocean carbon research team leader Dr Bronte Tilbrook said the major difference between this reef research project and any other was that the data would be collected over a three-year period, along the same, 2000km route.

“The infrastructure has been in-

stalled, the sensors have been tested, and we are starting to receive data in our labs in Tasmania,” Dr Tilbrook said.

“For the first time we are able to collect data to map ocean acidification over the entire Great Barrier Reef and determine if there are parts of the Reef that are likely to be more exposed to acidification changes.

“Data collected during the vessel’s travels will also help us determine how processes like the major flood and storm events recently experienced in Queensland influence longer term changes in ocean acidification.”

Bombers win wet-season Grand Final

THE top end turned on an absolute cracker of a day for the 2012-2013 Gapuwiyak Wet-Season Grand Final on Saturday, 13 April.

As AFL hasn’t been played in Gapuwiyak for the last few years, the town was abuzz with excitement and it seemed as though half of East Arnhem was flying in for the event, so much so that the umpires were in danger of not getting a seat on the plane in.

The two teams vying for the premiership cup were the Bombers and newly formed Lakers.

The Bombers had been one of the form sides all year, while Lakers were looking to top off a fairy tale season after sitting on the bottom of the ladder for most of the season and having to win every game in the last three weeks to make it to the grand final.

The first quarter was played at an intense tempo with both sides playing-on at all costs and breaking the defensive lines.

Both backlines held strong and it wasn’t until the midway through the first term that Lakers broke the deadlock with Andrew Marrawwungu kicking true, and then backing it up again one minute later to go two

goals up.

Bombers finally found their feet and started to get on top in the midfield through Nathan Garrawirrtja and Gilbert Dhamarrandji. By the end of the first quarter they had worked their way back into the game and held a narrow lead of three points.

After quarter time, the game turned into a shoot-out with both sides going goal for goal, the Bombers midfield was now taking command of every stoppage but they could not convert this dominance on to the scoreboard.

It seemed as though the Lakers were finally starting to tire after a

long finals campaign, but two classy long range goals from midfielder Darren Gundalmirriwuy sparked the team again.

During the last quarter the Bombers took a hold of the game and Cliffton Gurruwiwi started to provide the Lakers with a massive headache, as he kicked three goals in a matter of minutes.

A miracle goal from the boundary from Jake Babui gave the Lakers another glimmer of hope but from then on it was all Bombers as they ran out eventual winners by 30 points.

Cliffton Gurruwiwi was named man of the match with a massive nine-goal haul.

THERE was no change to the Arafura Times/Arnhem Club NRL tipping competition on th weekend due to the representative matches.

The Kangaroos defeated the Kiwis 32-12 and Country downed City 18-12.

There is a three-way tie for the lead after round six of the NRL competition.

Malkzok1 has been joined on top by marlinman and Andrew Hoffman on 37, while Tanya Hoffman sits on 36 and is in hot pursuit.

‘Mosquito fleet’ makes major impact

By ALF WILSON DIMINUTIVE Arnhem Land youths Ronnie Dirdi and Elijah Dhamarrandji were amongst the smallest players at the National under 15 KickStart Championships in Townsville, but that didn’t prevent them being highly effective.

They were by no means alone as NT had by far the biggest percentage of “mosquito fleet” players of the six competing sides at the April 8-12 carnival.

Along with Sebbo Garawirrtja, Ronnie and Elijah were stars for NT which finished third.

Other sides at the carnival were WA, Victoria/Tasmania, SA, Queensland and NSW/ACT. Elijah (Milingimbi), Sebbo (Elcho Island) and Ronnie (Gunbalunya) picked up many possessions as they waited for the ball to fall to terra firma after the big men flew high.

Footy season kicks off

FOOTY season got underway on Saturday, with the six team competition for 2013 meaning the spectators were able to enjoy three fantastic games at the Hindle footy oval.

The scorers for the games had headed bush before Arafura Times was able to get the results for the weekend’s games, but we do know that the Saints (13-11-89) enjoyed a solid win over Gapuwiyak

(6-9-45), dedicating their victory to John Keogh, who lost his battle for life a couple of days earlier.

THE soccer season is underway, with the Gove Junior Football Club holding a “Meet the Coaches” session at Hindle Oval on Friday (19 April).

More than 80 kids have signed up for their chance to play the beautiful game, but the Club is happy to accept late sign-ons.

Weekly training for the Under 6’s, Under 8’s and Under 10’s began on Monday (22 April) and goes from 4.30pm to 5.30pm every week, while Under 12’s and Over

13’s have their first training session today (Wednesday 24 April) at Hindle Oval from 5pm to 6.30pm.

Games start for all this Friday (26 April) at the oval from 4.30pm with the season running through to 16 August.
