Crime rates lowest ‘ in years ’
$2 – EDITION 941, 29 May - 4 Jun 2013
Barking up the right tree . . .
Hopefully this will reassure the whole community that this area is a fantastic and safe place to live.
By MATT GARRICK
NHULUNBUY residents can rest easy tonight knowing crime rates in the region are the lowest they have been in more than three years. Statistics were released last week citing how domestic-violence, alcoholrelated assaults, unlawful entries, thefts and property damages had all dropped substantially - by between 20 and 30 per cent - since the last financial year. Nhulunbuy’s Officer-in-Charge, Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon, has attributed the low figures to good, hard work done by local police and enforcement committees. “We’ve had a considerable clean-up of outstanding warrants; we also have three very strong liquor permit committees in Gunyangara, Yirrkala and Nhulunbuy. “Also the considerable work that’s been done around cleaning-up volatile substance abuse by community, and by Alcohol and Drugs, and by the interagency tasking co-ordination group.” Liquor permits have limited the influx of booze into communities on the Gove Peninsula, and helped slow rates of alcohol-related violence. “These strong liquor permit committees are very stringent in their enforcement, and take their role seriously in ensuring that people that do have access to take-away alcohol in this region are responsible. “And those who prove to be not responsible have their permits revoked. “When they reapply, they are moni-
tored very closely.” Local MLA Lynne Walker said the rest of the Northern Territory could take a leaf from Gove’s book. “I think we’re setting a good model for the rest of the Territory here. “We have good police officers on the ground who work at addressing issues before they become issues.” Ms Walker mentioned the one resource police were lacking was enough Aboriginal Community Police Officers, to help maintain strong cultural relations with members of indigenous communities. “Unfortunately we are seeing a government which seems intent on cutting services, so I won’t be holding my breath for this any time soon,” Ms Walker said. Snr Sgt Muldoon said although crime rates were at present the best he’d seen since arriving here in 2010, becoming complacent now would be a mistake. “Complacency would allow all types of things to creep back in. “The Nhulunbuy Police Station and its members will remain vigilant and continue to arrest those people who cause damage and commit assaults in the community, and we will continue to put them before the courts.” For now, Goveites can rest assured they are reasonably out of the danger zone. “Hopefully this will reassure the whole community that this area is a fantastic and safe place to live,” Snr Sgt Muldoon said.
STAFF member at Yirrkala Arts Centre Max Gumana knows a thing or two about traditional art techniques used in the region. That’s why he was picked to help demonstrate bark harvesting techniques to a group of visiting art conservators, who travelled to the region from major art and educational institutions from across the

New CEO to face disadvantage head-on AFTER over six months of searching, East Arnhem Shire have welcomed a new Chief Executive Officer. John Japp (right) started as the Shire’s head on May 14; and he comes packed with plenty of ideas and an impressive CV. He’s recently completed a three-year contract as CEO of the Shire in the Cape York community of Aurukun, and before that he was CEO at Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council, also in Far North Queensland. He noted that the challenges he expects to face here could be similar to those in the troubled community of Aurukun. “The major challenges are employment, business development and these sort of activities. “Recent statistics from the last census have identified the East Arnhem Shire as the eighth most-disadvantaged community in Australia. “There are certain reasons for that, and something has to be done to reduce that level of disadvantage.” Mr Japp said the East Arnhem Shire was one of the largest employers in the region, and so it was important, as an employer, to see

that local people were engaged within their own community. “I’ll be looking at the ways to do that, trying to see at how it can be achieved. “There have been a lot of initiatives in the past which have failed, and we don’t want to repeat the same failures. “The best thing I’ve found is to find out what the people want.” Mr Japp has worked alongside dire poverty, having lived in Papua New Guinea for 17 years. “Getting a feel with what was happening in PNG - I was in Rotary there and getting out to the villages. “It really opened my eyes to what very simple, easy things could be done to improve the quality of life in any community. “And I can see what could happen to improve the situation in indigenous communities, and the Council is a very important
part of that.” The approachable Mr Japp is just starting to settle into Nhulunbuy, so if you spot him around say g’day.

NEW CITIZENS: Ramsey Failey and Jwan Jalay with baby Xeina Failey, Anne, Larah, Hannah and Mike Fourie and East Arnhem Shire President Banambi Wunungmurra. WELCOME: East Arnhem Shire President Banambi Wunungmurra presents young Larah Fourie with her certificate of citizenship. WHEN former champion wave rider Mike Fourie was a younger man, 25 years ago, he arrived in Australia to take NORTHERN TERRITORY part in surfing competitions. Maybe it was staring at those pristine Aussie beaches that did it, but whatever the case, he knew from then on he would one day settle down in Australia permanently. All these years later, on May 24, Mr Fourie and his family - wife Anne and children Larah and Hannah - were formally granted Australian citizenship at a ceremony in Nhulunbuy. Also accepted into the fold was Iranian lady Jwan Jalay - partner of local taxi-driver and Iraqi refugee Ramsey Failey. The couple, whose baby girl celebrated her first birthday just days before the citizenship was granted, said words could not express the freedom they felt. “When I first left Iraq, a war was on. “It had started when I was just 16 years old. “As soon as I touched Australian soil after leaving my country, I felt freedom,” Mr Failey said. South Africa, too, where the Fourie’s hail from, is no stranger to the tumult of violent politics. As Australians, Mr and Mrs Fourie will have to cast their votes in Sepwww.nt.gov.au/health tember’s less-violent Federal election between Tony Abbott and Julia Gillard.

“It’s part and parcel of being Australian to go and vote. “But watching all the media reports, it gets confusing to know who to vote for! “I guess we’ll have to chew on the decision over a barbecue or two. “At least it will be politics based on non-violence,” Mr Fourie said. The ceremony was conducted in the Bali Pavilion, in the Arnhem Club, and was hosted by East Arnhem Shire Council. Shire President Banambi Wunungmurra congratulated the families and welcomed their choice to become Australians. “Australia can take enormous pride in your decision,” he said in a speech.

New GM sights set on benchmark NEW General Manager of Pacific Aluminium’s Gove Operations Ryan Cavanagh (pictured right) wants people to remember what being a part of a world-class operation felt like. With the departure of former GM Frank Willsdon in April, Mr Cavanagh stepped into a position on May 1 many might find less than enviable; the period of limbo waiting for real movement on the Gas-to-Gove pipeline project. But Mr Cavanagh sees his new role as an opportunity to get everyone aligned and working together, to get more bang for the company’s buck. “There’s a great team here, but it can even be better. “Ten years ago, Gove was the benchmark refinery in the world. “It was the pinnacle; everyone looked at Gove and went, ‘our operation has to be like theirs’.”
Around 20 per cent of employees at Gove Operations have been working for the company for 10 years or more, he said. “That’s 20 per cent of the team that remember what it was like to be world class and have everyone in the world aspiring to be the same. “I think that’s really important for people to remember what that feels like.” Mr Cavanagh is no stranger to uncertainty and fluctuation in the mining business; the section of Pacific Aluminium he was working for in New Zealand for the last three and a half years, NZ Aluminium Smelters, faced unprecedented market conditions that resulted in cash losses of $50 million last year. “The increase in electricity prices in the new contract, which took effect from January 1, placed a significant cost burden on the smelter,” he has said in the past.
He blamed company structural issues in Gove Operations’ past when Alcan took over Nabalco and they went through the G3 expansion
18 jobs pegged for redundancy at Laynha REPORTS are circulating that 18 positions at Laynhapuy Homelands Aboriginal Corporation will be made redundant by the end of the financial year on June 30. Employees currently working in programs, including the soon-to-be-defunct CDEP with Laynhapuy, were preparing to make a transition into a new employment pathways program named Remote Jobs and Communities. Following a company board meeting last week, reports have suggested the organisation has decided to withdraw their tender in place
to act as an agency for Remote Jobs and Communities, due to data released which suggested the program may not be financially viable. If so, and Laynhapuy do not reverse this decision to abandon the Remote Jobs and Communities program, the employee positions currently in the CDEP program will be up in the air. Laynhapuy acting Chief Executive Officer Chris Marshall was on leave and unavailable to comment at time of deadline. The board are expected to hold an emergency meeting this week to finalise a decision.
project - for knocking the plant off its world-class perch. “We were left with some legacy issues that we have been dealing with. “We’ve been playing catch up ever since then.” He said since record production was achieved last year, the plant has been on its way back. To travel towards world-class performance, the new manager said it was all about having a well gelled team. “I’m a pretty simple person; for me, everything is about creating relationships. “I want to create a team that cares about one another and care about the work they do.” Mr Cavanagh could not comment on the exact state of the gas-pipeline project due to confidentiality issues, but said things were progressing at a steady rate.
QANTAS flight cancelled
QANTAS have blamed a mechanical issue for the forced cancellation of a flight from Darwin to Gove last Thursday morning, May 23. Passengers were left waiting at Darwin Airport after an announcement was made that the plane would not fly due to a hydraulics problem. A Qantas spokesperson said although the issue had been minor, they had wanted to put safety first. “An additional service was put on in the afternoon, so impacted passengers were still able to fly on the same day.” Qantas have apologised for the upheaval.

Mixed lolly bag filled with cannabis, intercepted on its way into a remote indigenous community. Photo courtesy NT Police. POLICE from the Remote Community Drug Desk seized 61 grams of cannabis secreted in a mixed lolly bag at a remote airport on May 23. Detective Superintendent Tony Fuller said police were acting on information received when they attended a local airline company and searched freight destined for one of the region’s indigenous communities. (Police could not confirm the exact identity of the community, citing that it could hinder their investigation into the crime. They did say, however, that it was headed for this part of the Top End). “It is not unusual for Police to find cannabis hidden in children’s toys, nappies, food, detergent bottles and a wide range of other products. “This lolly bag had been resealed so they have gone to some effort to conceal the true contents, thankfully to no avail. “Police believe the cannabis could have been sold for $6,000 if it had reached its destination.” Detective Superintendent Fuller said investigations into the cannabis find were continuing.

Local to curate Telstra Awards
Curator for the 2013 Telstra Indigenous Art Awards Allison Thatcher (centre) with her Northern Land Council colleagues Susan Sandery and Damien Djerrkura. A NHULUNBUY-based anthropologist will curate the country’s most-coveted indigenous art awards. Allison Thatcher, who has been working for the last 20 months as the Northern Land Council’s Regional Anthropologist for north-east Arnhem Land, has scored the gig as curator for this year’s Telstra National Indigenous Art Awards in Darwin. Ms Thatcher - who began her journey into the world of indigenous art when she volunteered at Yirrkala Arts Centre in 2003 - knows she’s got some challenges coming her way. “I’ve had a lot of experience in the field, having worked at art centres, with Yolngu people, as well as working down in Alice Springs editing and writing. “I’ve got a good eye for art, and how things should be displayed and documented. “But, certainly there are going to be some challenges, I just don’t know what they’ll be yet,” she laughed. Having left Gove last Friday for the bright lights of Darwin, Ms Thatcher said there would be plenty she’d miss about this region, and her job for NLC. “I’ll miss the Yolngu people. “The senior old people who just know so much. “They’re so open and accessible for Balandas (white people) to come in and just learn.” The finalists in the running for the $40,000 main Telstra Award were announced last week, with the winner to be known when the exhibition opens. The winning works will be on display at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory in Darwin from Friday August 9 to November 10.

letters to the editor/comment NSW artist wins NAIDOC poster competition AN Aboriginal artist from NSW has won this year’s NAIDOC Poster competition, for her work promoting the fiftieth anniversary of the Yirrkala Bark Petitions; the theme for this year’s NAIDOC Week. Artist Gail Naden, from Gilgandra, will receive $5000 and her artwork will feature on the 2013 National NAIDOC poster. The poster will be distributed across the country to promote NAIDOC Week 2013, which runs from July 7-14. National NAIDOC Committee chair Benjamin Mitchell announced Ms Naden’s submission, titled Claiming Our Ground, as the winning artwork. Mr Mitchell said the winning entry, a digital artwork, cleverly reflected the year’s theme of ‘We Value the Vision: Yirrkala Bark Petitions 1963’. “Claiming Our Ground is a dynamic and highly skilled artwork, and the Committee liked the way the theme came through with the use of a digital medium,” Mr Mitchell said. The 2013 National NAIDOC Poster Competition received more than 130 entries, but the Committee
Artist Gail Naden and her winning poster. was unanimous on the selection of “The concept is about gaining Ms Naden’s work. land through education, through Ms Naden was delighted when perseverance and through believing told she had won the competition that we can attain success ourselves. and said her artwork represented “The message is about grabbing perseverance and success. hold of something that you really
believe in and making that a success in your life, like the Yolngu people did 50 years ago.” To order free copies of the 2013 National NAIDOC Week Poster, visit www.naidoc.org.au.
Local government reforms or just a re-badge? LOCAL government reforms in relation to the shires have been the subject of consultations around the Territory in the past two months following an ‘options paper’ which was the outcome of a regional governance working group which was appointed by Chief Minister Adam Giles. Far from “getting rid of the shires”, a phrase recently reiterated by Adam Giles when I heard him speak at Gangan, the reforms appear to be little more than a re-badging from ‘shire councils’ to ‘regional councils’. Last week I managed to attend the public consultation meetings at Galiwin’ku (Elcho Island) and Yirrkala which were poorly promoted and poorly attended. The logistics and costs ($2.3 mil-

Don’t diss my ability (to tune out) ISN’T the internet a wonderful thing? If I try hard, I can remember when news meant the ABC radio version. I don’t count the frothy stuff on the music channels - suffering through the presenter’s inane babble to hear a few rushed headlines is not worth it. And by the time the quality newspapers (yes, Samantha, there used to be such things) arrived here, whatever they had no longer qualified as news. Now a few clicks of the mouse and my news is hot and fresh, and coming from such a variety of sources I ought to be able to distil a balanced picture of what is happening in our wide brown land. Yes, I ought to be able but . . . What is it between the newspapers and our Julia? This month she finally got around to doing
something for Australians with disabilities, and I say - bless her little heart! I can totter around fairly well at the moment, but if I ever get stuck in a wheelchair and need continuous help . . . All over the country, thinking Australians approve and even accept a dollar-a-day levy to pay for it. (Except for presenters of those music channels who would prefer to spend their dollar at Starbucks). So why am I whinging? Look at the newspapers. Although our Julia has done something most us like - even Tony Ears supports the idea - the newspapers are still treating her like the Wicked Witch of Canberra. If she had decided to eat live fluffy bunnies for breakfast she would not have got a worse press. I happen to like Julia, mostly because she is clever

the awards ceremony! Well done, Don. AS an addendum to my column last week about what the Territory budget is (or isn’t) delivering to our community, I’ve had several people ask me about the CLP election promise to provide $1.5 million to complete the upgrade to the Melville Bay boat ramp. Sorry, no sign of that promise being kept. ON a closing note, best wishes to all involved in the School Sport NT basketball competition which is being hosted in Nhulunbuy this week with teams from across the Territory travelling to compete. Hats off to coordinator Ian Darlington for all his hard work, and a big thanks to the many generous families who are taking in billets.

Nhulunbuy Primary and the childcare centre have been running a program for the last eight weeks, where the school’s English as a Second Language (ESL) students have challenged themselves by reading storybooks to toddlers. ESL teacher Shane Ogg said the idea was to show the young Yolngu kids enrolled in ESL how relevant reading was in everyday life, not just in schoolrooms. “One of the things we have seen is that their confidence has just bloomed, and their knowledge and understanding of the texts has shone through. “They love it.” After two months of the program, the ESL students have evolved their reading skills to being able to answer questions the childcare kids asked them about the books. “It’s also been a way to pool our resources across the community,” Mr Ogg said. The school and the childcare centre have plans to expand the scheme and continue it into the future.

Community mourns loss of Father Barry Hansen
Local MLA Lynne Walker with Father Barry Hansen at an Anzac Day service in April. THE region’s Catholic community are in mourning, after the head of Gove’s Sacred Heart Parish, Father Barry Hansen, passed away in Darwin on Monday morning, May 27. Father Hansen was reportedly flown to Darwin last Friday, May 24, for hospitalisation due to ill health. Local MLA Lynne Walker said Mr Hansen was a wonderful person who had been in the region and involved with the Catholic church for around 10 years. “This is very sad news for the community,” she said.

WORKSHOP TEACHES ANCIENT ARNHEM ART TECHNIQUES BUKU-LARRNGGAY MULKA A RARE workshop showcasing the techniques used by Yolngu artists to create East Arnhem Land’s renowned bark paintings was held in the region from May 14-16. A group of 16 conservators from around the nation - the people whose job it is to look after art and maintain
it as it ages - travelled to the region to learn about innovations in how to cut and preserve bark art. Yirrkala Art Centre (Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre) hosted the workshop, which had artists and local leaders showing the conservators the process of creating a bark artwork.
The process, as can be followed in the pictures below, went from; 1 and 2. Cutting and stripping the bark out of a tree. 3. Removing moisture and straightening the bark on a fire. 4. Transporting the bark. 5. Painting the bark.
Art Centre Coordinator Will Stubbs said barks have an undeservedly bad reputation for not staying well-preserved. “There are 70-year-old barks that are still in great nick. “We wanted to give the conservators a chance to see some new techniques which are being used to preserve barks
which are also actually just old Yolngu techniques. Bark is an Australian medium that is here to stay,” Mr Stubbs said. Nhulunbuy residents are able to view some of our region’s artist’s bark paintings down at Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre, opposite the supermarket in Yirrkala.

Working for you
If it gets nicked, report it IF your bike is stolen from your front yard, or beer cans ripped off from an outdoor fridge, who are you going to call? Certainly not Ghostbusters - and complaining about it on Facebook won’t help much either. Police have urged residents to report any property stolen - from fishing gear to a pushbike - to the local police station. A police spokesperson said a bike which was stolen from a resident on May 9 was recovered last weekend, due to their having reported the crime. “Because the owner had reported it stolen with an accurate description, we were able to return it to them, and they were very happy. “People have to alert us if they are victims of a robbery; it’s no good posting about it on Facebook.” Police said the incident was also a timely reminder for residents to keep their property secure. “Also, have your licence number engraved on the bottom side of your bike frame. “Police have an engraver at the station, so stop by and we will be able to engrave your bike to make it easier to trace.” To report any incidences of theft, contact Nhulunbuy Police Senior Aboriginal Community Police Officer Rodney Singh in Nhulunbuy (8987 1333). donation. Gift of Life seeks, through entertainment, to increase active engagement and awareness of organ and tissue donation. The play was written by Ben Graetz, a Darwinbased playwright of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander/Germanic heritage. It is a story about family, loss and love and the extraordinary gift of giving through organ and tissue donation. Following a wellreceived pilot tour delivered by Artback NT in 2012, Gift of Life will tour, as well as Nhulunbuy, communities across the NT including Barunga, Bulman, Timber Creek, Nauiyu, Wooliana and Adelaide River from Monday, June 3 to 14. NT Medical Director of Organ and Tissue Donation Dianne Stephens said the Northern Territory has the highest incidence of kidney disease in Australia. “We’ve been trying for many years to get the message about organ donation out into the Indigenous community … this play is just perfect.” Angela O’Donnell from ArtbackNT said addressing a sensitive issue through the arts was a great way of connecting with people who might not otherwise consider organ and tissue donation. “The outcomes of this

New leader for AFL tipping Trio retains lead in NRL comp.
Tipsters take a heavy battering TIPSTERS took a real battering after seven of the eight games had been played in round 11 of Arafura Times/ Arnhem Club NRL footy tipping competition on the weekend. Monday night’s game between the Rabbitohs and the Sharks had not been completed at the time the Arafura Times went to press. Only Jez managed five of the seven winners, while a mere seven correctly forecast four winners - Duggie, aaron tilley, Travis Dehnert, Malkzok1, Putty, Halwes and Graham Hughes. Twelve had three winners. Surprisingly, there was no change at the top of the ladder, with Marlinman, Kaffir and Andres Hoffman all on 63, after all three got only three correct. They all tipped the same winners Bulldogs, Sea Eagles and Titans. Malkzok1 (4 winners) moved into outright second with 62, while doodlecuckernochc.(3) is on 61 and Wayno (2)

dropped from equal second to fourth on 60 with Tanya Hoffman (3). Shaun Dennis (3) and Graham Hughes (4) sit on 59. 58: Waggy (3), Jez (5), Luke Cole (3) Duggie (4). 57: VanDam (3), Putty (4), Halwes (4) 55: Killer, KaRon1, broccoli. 54: Travis Dehnert, aaron tilley, grimmus8u. The winner of the Arafura Times/ Arnhem Club NRL tipping competition wins $500.
THE Bulldogs’ stunning win against the Saints proved costly for all but one lone tipster in round nine of the Arafura Times/Arnhem Club AFL footy tipping competition on the weekend. Woodsgal was the only one who had the courage to go for the Bulldogs. No one again correctly predicted nine winners, and, given the weekend’s results, only Crocbait and renae forbes managed eight. Tipsters were caught out with a variety of results, including the Swans’ win against the Magpies, the Blues’ victory against the Lions and the Crows’ one-point triumph against the Kangaroos. Seven players scored seven wins - Tanya Hoffman, David Gibson, Tracey xxxx, Damo, hayden4x, forbesy and Darren Nunn. Eighteen were correct with six - Kaffir, waggy, crackers, Joseph Benn, 43, Maggie May, Woodsgal, Andres Hoffman, Jendj, VanDam, KaRon 1, govegal, Spudly, Graham Hughes, Jez, dixienormous, Killer Kowalski, Noni Dj,
Tipping Competition
The turmoil in the scores has resulted in a new leader, with Darren Nunn showing the way with 63. Five are on 62 - Hayden4x, Forbsey, former joint leaders Duggie and pleb both got five right, amd Kaffir (6 correct). Waggy (6) sits alone on 61. 60: David Gibson (7), Tanya Hoffman (7), crackers (6). 59: Agron (5). 58: Wayno, WestAussieGirl136, Joseph Benn, Travis Dehnert. 57: 43, Maggie May, Woodsgal. 56: Andres Hoffman, renae forbes, Jendj, VanDam, KaRon1, Dobbo. SPORT NHULUNBUY Motorcycle Club members revved their engines on May 19, to hold two ripping events out at Nhulunbuy’s Motocross track. These were the Laynhapuy Aviation Senior Enduro and Junior Round 2 MX. The Laynhapuy Aviation Enduro consisted of a threehour endurance race on an 8.8km circuit, containing many technical sections where the participant’s skills were tested, with some riders pushed to their limits. A few spectators were lucky enough to witness the action close-up, when participants went through the roughest part of the circuit known as ‘The Gully’ - where riding over logs, rocks and even having to go under a branch or two was an extreme test. Congratulation to Dan Jones who took first place, with a winning score of 14 laps. Second place went to Anthony Howard, third place to Nick Twomey and fourth place to Luke Dawson. Great effort put in by all riders. While the seniors were tackling the enduro track, junior riders participated in their event; the Junior MX Round Two. Riders did laps of the motorcross track to earn points towards their end of year trophies, and put on a spectacular show on for the spectators. Congratulations to all participants. NMCC would also like to thank Laynhapuy Aviation for sponsoring the enduro event, as well as St John’s Volunteers, Dan Wagg, Alice Bosak, Paul Fuhrmann, Jared Cislowski, Jordan Ross, Dan Coxon, Jamie and Shawn Gordon, Iris and Pete McCormack, Chad Dwyer, Darren O’Dwyer, Tim Wagg, Rob Aston, Matt Watson, Mitch Whitmore and Tan Foster for their hard work during the day. If you would like further information on the club or events contact Pete McCormack (0447 801 141) or Cassie Hennig (0477 818 888) or find us on facebook. NMCC Secretary, Cassie Hennig

Superfish Tony smashes N.T. 50-metre record OUR residents superfish, Tony ‘The Bike Man’ Maddison, has smashed the Northern Territory record for swimming the 50 metre freestyle in the 55-60 age group. After a steady regime of training, Mr Maddison travelled to Sydney where he took part in the Masters Swimming Australia 2013 National Championships, late last month. He competed in a number of events, but said the freestyle was the one he was after. Although he didn’t take first place in the race, his time of 29.5 seconds has made him the new NT champion. “The guy that won the race broke the national record, with 26.48 seconds. “The competition was very stiff. “But I realised that it would be, as I’d raced against him before; so I went solely to aim for this record.” The previous record of 30.73 seconds had stood for five years before Mr Maddison
managed to snatch it for himself, and for his swim club the Darwin Stingers. The Stingers also took part in a relay during the event, for which they grabbed a bronze. “We hadn’t seen each other for two years, as I’m the only member based in Gove. “We just got down there and threw a relay team together and competed against 96 other teams. “So that’s why we’re really proud that we got a bronze.” The other members of the Darwin Stingers relay team were John Pollock, Gerda Williams and Bobbie Lee. Mr Maddison said he couldn’t have achieved what he had without the support and motivation of his Gove training partners Trudy Guiney and Roger Spragg, and the sports therapy from Monique at Gove physiotherapy and masseuse Amanda Tony Maddison is the new NT record holder for the 50m freestyle for ages 55-60. Des is now the six thousand-kilometre man LOCAL fitness fanatic Des O’Sullivan completed a ten kilometre run recently - a big feat, considering it was his 600th time doing so. Des clocked up kilometre number 6000 on May 18, winding up on the rocks at Wirrawuy Beach just in time for the end of a spectacular sunrise. “About 10 or 11 years ago I started doing this run along the beach. “It’s such a beautiful run and it’s never got boring. “It’s exactly a ten kilometre run for me, from my house and back, and I’m really happy to have clocked up 600.” Without fail, Des has recorded his time following each morning run, with his best time in the high forty minutes. “That was a few years ago. “It’s probably around the middle fifties these days,” Des said. With the beach pretty much to himself on each run, Des said he’ll continue, and there’ll be no stopping him on his way to 1000.
Local Des O’Sullivan completed his 600th ten kilometre run on May 18.
