Loss of a legend The name of the deceased person has been used in this article with permission from Yothu Yindi Foundation.n EAST Arnhem Land has lost an elder, an educator, a musician, a brother and a friend. After a long battle with kidney disease, the legendary frontman of Yothu Yindi, M Yunupingu, has died. Mr M Yunupingu changed the landscape of Australian music, and made the rest of the nation aware of Yolngu people and this part of the world. He passed away in his home in Yirrkala around midnight on June 2, at age 56. Mr Yunupingu was the first Aboriginal person from Arnhem Land to gain a university degree. In 1986, he formed Yothu Yindi, and co-wrote the group’s most famous song, Treaty. In 1990 he became principal of the Yirrkala Community School, creating another milestone as the first Aboriginal school principal in Australia. In 1991, as the success of Treaty grew to huge proportions, he left the position at Yirrkala to pursue his career with Yothu Yindi and tour the globe. Yothu Yindi rose to become the most-popular indigenous band ever seen in the country, producing six albums including the smash singles Tribal Voice and Djapana (Sunset Dreaming). In 1993, he was named Australian of the Year in recognition of his huge contributions to the education of Aboriginal children, and for helping to better the understanding between Aboriginal and Ngapaki (non-indigenous) Australians. In recent years, Mr Yunupingu suffered from poor health with advanced renal failure, and was on dialysis three times a week at Darwin Hospital. Last December he was rushed to hospital after collapsing at his home following a trip to Sydney to be inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Mr Yunupingu used his appearance at the ARIAs to call for formal recognition of Indigenous Australians into the country’s Constitution. He also managed to perform Treaty to a television audience of tens of thousands, alongside fellow musicians and friends Paul Kelly and Peter Garrett. Right up until his final weeks, Mr Yunupingu remained a vocal supporter of improving Aboriginal people’s quality of life; he took part in a renal health workshop in Gove on May 8. Continued Page 3 >>

A RECENT camping trip to Cape Arnhem turned into a rescue mission for a group of health workers and volunteers, when they ran across a stranded sea turtle entangled in ghost nets. The crew worked quickly to free the turtle - believed to be an endangered Hawksbill - from the nets, before carrying it down to the shoreline. After being placed on the sand, the animal then tried to drag itself towards the water. Returning to the same remote spot - known as Twin Eagles - the next day, the campers discovered the turtle still beached, and upside-down on its back, unable to move. They righted it, then placed it in the water - hoping it would return to its habitat unharmed - although they noted it looked weak as it swam off. Camper Simon Jackson, from Melbourne, who is currently volunteering at Yirrkala Arts Centre, said it was pretty upsetting to see the trapped turtle, as well as all the ghost nets on the beach. “We also spotted a dead turtle, higher
up the shoreline, on the same day. “It was just such a shame to see what these nets are doing to these animals.” Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation looks after and maintains the coasts of East Arnhem Land, undertaking programs with their Land and Sea Rangers including ghost-net clean-ups and turtle rescue. “We do the very best we can to get out there and patrol our beaches, but it’s incredibly difficult to get across the whole IPA as it is so remote,” Dhimurru Project Facilitator Vanessa Drysdale said. “If you come across a stranded animal, take a photo of it, and release it if it is still alive. Then please record the location you found them and what happened to the carcass of dead turtles. “We take skin/bone samples from the animals (alive or dead) which are sent to scientists in Darwin who can investigate their genetics with a view to building a picture of the origins of our local populations of marine sea turtles.” If you come across a stranded sea turtle, contact Dhimurru (8939 2700).
Stations are back on the air A NEW antenna was erected on Nhulunbuy’s Mount Saunders this week, meaning that after a couple months hiatus, radio stations Triple J (98.1FM) and SBS are back on the air. Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited have been working to get the new fixture up-and-running since requirements meant they could no longer share the same transmitter as Gove FM, and had to construct separate radio infrastructure. The works should also have fixed the town’s digital television transmission,

The Corporation relayed in their Meeting Report on May 21 that Broadcast Australia would be installing digital ABC and SBS by the end of June, and Analogue transmission will then be switched off. The Voice’s Yirrkala connection ITUNES sales of Gurrumul’s self-titled first album sky-rocketed last week, after the Elcho Island musician appeared on television show The Voice to play a tune penned by the lead singer of Yirrkala’s East Journey. Gurrumul (left) performed the song Bayini, with Voice coach Delta Goodrem, which was written for him by his cousin, East Journey’s Rrawun Maymuru (right). After the show, his album rose to number four on the iTunes albums chart. Bayini was originally recorded with guest vocalist Sarah Blasko. The performance was included on the popular Channel Nine and Imparja show to recognise Reconciliation Week, with Goodrem singing partially in Gurrumul’s native Yolngu language. This episode of The Voice was viewed by 1.64 million Australians. Gove fans of Gurrumul should have the chance to see the blind artist in the region soon, as he is expected to perform here during NAIDOC Week, on July 10.

Member for Lingiari Warren Snowdon, who also attended the May workshop, said he felt very deeply about the loss of this great Australian and mate. “He was primarily an educator, a former school principal, a great believer in both ways of education and instrumental in a review of education in the Northern Territory and elsewhere in the 1990s.” Mr Snowdon said that as a mate, Mr Yunupingu was a wonderful bloke. “(He) always recognised the beauty of others. “He had a wonderful way of dealing with young people in particular, but all people, he was just that sort of person.” Mr Snowdon said Mr Yunupingu had a dramatic impact on
many spheres of life. “He’s had a universal impact on reconciliation through his music and he’s shown that you don’t need to be stump politician to be a leader. “You can be a leader through your art, your culture and through education in his case. “I think he’ll go down in history and history will see him very kindly, as it should.” Prime Minister Julia Gillard released a statement saying we have lost a great Australian voice in the efforts towards reconciliation. “We have lost a uniquely talented musician, a passionate advocate for Aboriginal people and a truly great friend. “His music set out challenges for us all in the road to reconciliation. “He will also be remembered
as a great educational leader and a champion for the Yolngu people.” She said he leaves a great body of work to inspire us and we will need all of that inspiration, for so much work remains undone. Mr Yunupingu also leaves a lasting and vivid cultural legacy on North East Arnhem Land. The foundation he helped to set up, The Yothu Yindi Foundation, continues to host the country’s biggest celebration of indigenous culture; the annual Garma Festival, to be held in August. His grandson Rrawun Maymuru fronts the successful group East Journey, also from Yirrkala, who cite Yothu Yindi as their primary influence. East Journey continue to captivate new audiences around the country. His nephew Geoffery Gur-
rumul Yunupingu, who began his career as keyboardist for Yothu Yindi, uses his music promote East Arnhem culture and language across the world. During his lifetime, Mr Yunupingu stood at the forefront of bringing Aboriginal music into the mainstream of Australian culture. His work assisted greatly in helping Yolngu people find an equal footing with the rest of modern society. He always said he believed that life should be balanced and in harmony and that his mother taught him important Aboriginal ideas about how to live with people and with nature. His name, Yunupingu, means rock - rock that stands against time. M Yunupingu is survived by his wife, five daughters and five grandsons.

MOU signed to facilitate Gas-to-Gove supply
NORTHERN Territory’s Chief Minister Adam Giles has signed an agreement with the Federal Government to affirm their ongoing commitment on getting Gas-to-Gove. On May 27, the
Commonwealth and NT Governments signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which has been heralded as an important step towards ensuring the NT’s gas supply is secured for the future.
Mr Giles said Gasto-Gove would further encourage investors who choose to do business to develop Northern Australia. “Onshore gas exploration is speeding up and the potential in the Territory is
remarkable. “The MOU focuses on ensuring that gas resources are sustainably developed in the national and community interest.” The NT Government said the MOU would under-
pin a coordinated approach to promoting the exploration and development of offshore and onshore gas resources.
with an interest in sea management. Dhimurru have said that despite the new IPA zones, the area’s fishermen will not have their rights impinged upon, providing they continue to fish within the law. Executive Officer of the Amateur Fishermen’s Association of the Northern Territory (AFANT) Craig Ingram said Dhimurru had consulted extensively with them in the period leading up to this announcement, and have listened to the needs of recreational fishers. “It’s been a constructive process. Having a good relationship between indigenous organisations and land owners and recreational fishers is very important. “Recreational fishers have obligations to make sure they fish sustainably and are protecting resources for the future, not just in IPAs, but everywhere.” The IPA dedication over sea country
is a non-legal process that does not impact on government agencies’ authority, fishery licences, access rights or native title rights. Any changes to current arrangements would occur only through negotiation and agreement under existing legislation and policies. The Dhimurru IPA includes coastal and island marine areas registered as sacred sites when it was first established in 2000. Dhimurru have said the dedication of the additional marine area as part of their IPA was a significant step in recognising and supporting Traditional Owners’ connections and responsibilities to land and sea country. They said it also provides a new model for collaborative marine management led by indigenous groups that have maintained and sustainably used their sea country for millennia.

Fishers safe in sea-country plan A SEA area bigger than the Pacific Island nation of Samoa has been formally dedicated for inclusion into Dhimurru’s Indigenous Protected Areas (IPA). Local Yolngu leaders have announced that 400,000 hectares of sea country surrounding the Gove Peninsula have been included into Dhimurru’s IPA, to help “better protect the cultural and natural values of the area, and ensure the sustainable Indigenous, commercial and recreational use of marine resources”. On May 26, the Dhimurru IPA Sea Country Management Plan was launched at the World Indigenous Network (WIN) conference in Darwin. The plan shows how Dhimurru will now be the principle organisation looking after and managing the sea country, collaboratively with Federal and Northern Territory governments, fishing organisations and other groups

Four arrested over crime spree << From Page 1 FOUR men have been arrested following a four-day crime spree in Gove. Two youths, aged 16 and 14 years old, and two men aged 30 and 22, have all been charged following the rampage which saw cars stolen, properties broken into and numerous disturbances and damages caused around the region. The spree allegedly began late in the night of Saturday, May 25, when offenders broke into a private residence in Yirrkala. Here a pair of bolt-cutters were stolen, which were allegedly used to break into the offices of Lirrwi Tourism. A shed at Lirrwi was then entered and a Toyota mini-bus stolen. The offenders then allegedly drove the car to Ski Beach where they
did doughnuts and caused extensive damage to the car. The car was then delivered back to the spot it was stolen from before dawn on Sunday morning. Numerous fridgings were reported over the night, but the offenders managed to evade police. Late on Monday night, the same alleged offenders broke into the compound of Laynhapuy Homelands, where they pried open a window screen and entered the building. Inside, keys were stolen for a Troop Carrier. To escape the compound, the offenders rammed the vehicle through a locked gate, buckling it from its hinges. The rampage then continued to Bunggulwuy Close in Nhulunbuy, where a Honda CR-V was stolen and used for a number of unlawful entries
and fridgings. Offenders then attempted to gain entry to the Gove Surf Club, but were disturbed by the club’s caretaker and ran away. Continuing to the Arnhem Club, the group broke-in and allegedly stole a large quantity of alcohol. Community liaison workers in Yirrkala reported finding the alleged offenders intoxicated well into the next afternoon and notified police. Three of the alleged offenders were arrested on Tuesday, May 28, and the fourth, the 22-year-old, turned himself in later in the week. The two youths appeared in Darwin’s Youth Justice Court on Tuesday, June 4, and the 22-year-old in Darwin Magistrates Court on June 3. The fourth offender has been bailed to face court in Nhulunbuy in July.

tion by Gove Surf Club, Mr Beachcroft had the chance to have an actual shower and a sleep with a real roof over his head for the first time in awhile. His arrival in Gove followed a long trip crossing the Gulf of Carpentaria from Cape York, during which he spotted rare birds, sharks, dugongs, snakes, dozens of turtles, and yes, plenty of saltwater crocodiles. “It is generally my goal not to see them. “I choose where I camp fairly fastidiously, and I don’t paddle up rivers. “I’ve camped fairly close to water on occasions, but I place my boat in front of my tent
to provide an obstacle. “I’ve heard they prefer an easy feed over a hard one.” He also said his little boat gets attacked by sharks on a daily basis. “They come up and try and take a bite of my rudder, or knock into it to see what it is. “It’s always a surprise, to say the least.” Mr Beachcroft will paddle along the most isolated stretches of the northern Australian coastline in order to reach his goal of being the first kayaker to circumnavigate the entire mainland, as well as Tasmania. “It’s been an amazing trip so far. “I’m planning to take
around 15 months to complete it, and I’m four months into the journey now. “Once I hit the 10,000 km mark, I think it will all be downhill from there.” He said support for his quest has been outstanding. “The first thing people say when they meet me is usually, ‘mate, you’re crazy’. Then they follow this up with, ‘but good on ya,’ and they’ll shake my hand.” To follow the adventures of Mr Beachcroft as he heads on towards the top coasts of the Top End, then off towards the Kimberley, surf to his website on http://www. jasonbeachcroft.com/.

Improving access to autism support PARENTS of children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder had a chance to learn more and share experiences about the issue at a workshop held in Nhulunbuy last week. Recent studies have suggested that around one in 100 Australians are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, sometimes called by the umbrella term autism. This lifelong condition affects the way a person interacts socially, communicates, behaves and responds to sensory experiences in their environment. Positive Partnerships Coordinator Kim Schroeder said the Nhulunbuy workshop was incredibly successful with a great turn out of local parents and car-
ers of school age children with an autism spectrum disorder. “Having autism can present particular challenges for children during their school years. “It’s important that the support these students receive takes into account their individual strengths, challenges and situations.” She said that a focus of the Positive Partnerships program was to build mutually beneficial partnerships between families, schools and communities in support of students with autism. “We are also committed to improving access to support for parents, carers and teachers in regional and remote areas.” As well as the workshop for parents and carers, held
at Nhulunbuy Primary School, Positive Partnerships hosted two sessions for teachers and school leaders from all of the local schools. Readers interested in finding out about how to support their child, or their student, with autism at school can access a range of free resources, information and online courses at www.positivepartnerships. com.au.

Teacher finds new a species on Bush Blitz
SCIENCE teacher Cassie Duykers (right), from Nhulunbuy High School, has discovered a new species of spider in the depths of the Australian outback. She made the find while participating in an innovative science-based nature discovery program called Bush Blitz TeachLive, from May 14-22. During her journey, Ms Duykers discovered the unknown spider, which she has given a name which may cause it embarrassment in the animal world. “I named it the Ants Bum Head Spider.” She called it such because of its tiny head. “I found it in my observations as I wandered through the paddock. “I thought it was unusual, and I like unusual things.” The find was confirmed by scientists as a new species. Ms Duykers worked alongside some of Australia’s top scientists for Bush Blitz, on a remote station called Henbury, two hours south of Alice Springs. “I was getting hands-on experience helping scientists carry out their field work. “From laying pitfall traps, collecting plant specimens, and documenting a whole range of animals including spiders, dragonflies, frogs, insects, reptiles and mammals.” Ms Duykers said a special part of the Bush Blitz TeachLive program was that she could share it with students. “I could ‘teach live’ back to the classroom via skype, video blogs and lessons plans. It allowed me to link the theory I teach the students in the classroom with practical on-ground work that scientists do in the field. “Hopefully via the Bush Blitz TeachLive program, we will inspire the next generation of Australian scientists.” To follow the teachers at the Henbury Bush Blitz go to www.bushblitz.teachlive.org.au.

IN MEMORY of FATHER BARRY HANSON (1937-2013)
Gove farewells a humane and humble leader GOVE has lost the “peaceful, humble and humane” leader of its Catholic Church. Father Barry Hanson died on Monday May 27, in a
hospital in Darwin. His brother Lloyd, a great friend to Fr. Barry throughout his life, was able to be with Barry for some of
that time in hospital. Barry died as he lived; quietly, peacefully and with no fuss. Fr. Barry was the par-

ish priest for the Catholic Church in Gove and on Groote Eylandt since 1999. He arrived here after spending over 30 years living in Papua New Guinea. Father Barry always spoke very fondly of his time in PNG, and had great affection for the people there. One great friend of his from PNG, Hohoa Hohoa, visited Gove in the week after his death. Father Barry was wellloved by his parishioners and by many friends in town outside the church community. Daily Mass was offered by Father Barry throughout his time in Gove, until the day he flew out of town. During the week, he would offer Mass to just one, two or a small handful of parishioners, sometimes none, just Father Barry saying Mass at his ministry. Weekend Masses were different. For the Saturday evening vigil Mass and Sunday morning Mass the church filled up. It was easy to come to Mass offered by Father Barry. He gave wonderful sermons and embraced a very inclusive parish, welcoming as many to the altar as wished to serve with him, and giving
the choir free reign to sing a variety of hymns. He never batted an eyelid if people came to the church once in a lifetime or religiously every day; everybody was welcome and included. Having a number of small children in the parish, each Sunday Father Barry made a ceremony of handing the little ones the Children’s Bible at the altar before they left to attend liturgy. He used to smile at how he would unintentionally give the Bible to the same few children looking at him most eagerly each week. In consideration of his parishioners with tired children on a Sunday morning, instead of starting Mass strictly at 8.30am, as would happen in most churches, he regularly waited at the back of the church another ten minutes or so until all the faithful had arrived. He was very faithful to his ministry. Up until very recently, Father Barry’s habit was to rise at 4am for prayer (referred to as office). He was at the end of the phone for anyone in need of a priest and was a friend to anyone who needed one. He always had a good ear and wise words to say.
He carried out his duties with great faith and humanity and love. He was a honourable and humble man. He refused to allow his parishioners to arrange for the upgrading of his home, the presbytery, although it has been in need of work for some time. He wanted to live simply, he believed it was his duty as a priest to do so. In recent times, Father Barry was blessed by the presence of two wonderful nurses and a doctor in the parish. Trudy Guiney, Mary Clare Arkcoll and Dan Dwyer were a wonderful support to Father Barry over the last months since his return from hospital in Melbourne, where he had spent eleven weeks receiving treatment close to
his family. Father Barry’s memory will live on in our hearts and minds here in Gove and in that of Gove’s diaspora who have moved on to other parts of Australia and the world. Father Barry Hanson will be greatly missed, but we take comfort that our great loss is truly Heaven’s gain. Rest in Peace Father Barry. Nhulunbuy Catholic Parish Association secretary, Bernadette O’Grady.

letters to the editor/opinion Supporting children suffering with autism A LACK of access to allied health services in our region was highlighted last week during a threeday visit from Autism NT executive officer Merryn Affleck along with Kim Schroeder, who works with families and educators of children on the autism spectrum. There is no doubt that access to a speech pathologist, occupational therapist and psychologist for children on the spectrum is
critical in the knowledge that early intervention is vital. However, what was also very apparent at workshops held for educators, parents and carers, is that we do have many children in our schools with ASD, and with it a need for support and a potentially strong network to support one another, in the absence of regular visits from service providers. Geographic isolation
does make remote living and access to services challenging which is why we need to establish a network amongst families. For this reason, I am funding Merryn Affleck’s next trip to Nhulunbuy as a follow up to her initial visit last week. In the meantime, I will continue to lobby the government to see allied health professionals make regular and more frequent visits to Nhulunbuy, or, even better, re-instate positions locally.
Any families who were unable to participate in the workshop, but would like to be kept informed, please feel free to call me (8987 0125) to chat. This includes families who have a child who may not have a formal ASD diagnosis. NEWS on Monday morning of the passing of Mr Yunupingu marks a sad day for our nation with the loss of such an incredible individual.

LEFT: Actors John and Sue Nash in The Invisible Husband. RIGHT: Actors Beverley Hulme and Rhoda Shine in Quiet. EVERYBODY gets obsessed with something during in their lives - and the group from Gove Arts Theatre have pinpointed some extreme cases, in their new play, Collected Obsessions. An ego-driven bird watcher, a tyrannical landlord who can’t stand noise, an insomniac mother and an invisible husband - these are just a few of the quirky characters who appear throughout this collection of seven plays. The Arafura Times was lucky
enough to be invited to watch this talented troupe of actors perform their dress rehearsal, and see the obsessive series of stories unfold. The play has something for everybody; Mothers can find a giggle in the woman who becomes an insomniac by default because of her irritating children, pets and snoring husband, played to a tee by Kasey Lloyd. Fathers may find comfort in that feeling of being a ghost around the home, when they watch the
somewhat tragic piece, the Invisible Husband, starring hubby and wife team John and Sue Nash. Den of Iniquity will appeal to those who have ever taken pleasure in a secret vice, by watching Lawrence Walker enter a house of ill-repute on the wrong side of town, where all is not what it seems. Without giving anything away, these and the rest of the well-staged and superbly acted pieces cast a light on everyday obsessions, while
still taking audiences on a ride off the beaten track. Collected Obsessions is a journey that is sometimes bizarre, often poignant and very funny. It’s well-acted and filled with a zest for life, exploring what odd obsessions lurk in the hearts of man. Get you tickets before they sell out, $30 from Lynne Walker’s office. Performance dates are June 7, 8, 14 and 15 at The Cell. Doors open 7.30pm.
Professor Palmer a titanic threat to Parliament LOOMING over September’s elections is the shadow of Queensland’s richest man - Professor Clive Palmer. Clive is proving to be good at looming. It is his only strategy at the moment as he struggles to get his Palmer United Party off the ground and running in time for the elections. He has to establish his party’s credentials, make sure everyone knows what he stands for, and fend off the inevitable attacks from our entrenched political class. Not an easy job, but Clive is a capable man. He did not get to be a zillionaire by being dumb and lazy. Just having him standing around
is a major irritation for Our Julia and Tony Ears. When one of them says something like; “I will improve health care, I will make sure the rich pay taxes, I will cut red tape...”, the voters respond with - what have you been waiting for? Why haven’t you done those things already? When Clive makes the same claims, we might be tempted to listen, and even give him a go at the elections. It is very annoying for Tony and Julia to have some-one as smart and successful as Clive looking over their shoulders every day, and they really, really wish the media would

ARTS and ENTERTAINMENT
Yolngu actor awarded for lifetime contribution OVER the last five decades, actor David Gulpilil has given audiences some of the most memorable performances of all Australian cinema. Last week he was given something back for his lifetime contribution to the arts; the prestigious Red Ochre Award. Mr Gulpilil accepted the annuallygifted award - which has also been won by musicians Jimmy Little, Archie Roach and Warren H Williams - at a ceremony in the Sydney Opera House on May 27. Fifty-nine-year-old Mr Gulpilil said he would use some of the $50,000 prize money to fund jobs programs for young indigenous people living in Arnhem Land. “I want to take young people to come
here and perform like I did. “I want young people to become film directors or film writers or a camera operator. “I want to see Aboriginal kids growing up and learning so that they can tell the stories of Australia,” Mr Gulpilil said. His career began in the 1971 film Walkabout, before he had learnt to speak English. Since then he has played lead roles in landmark Aussie films including The Tracker, Rabbit Proof Fence, Ten Canoes and Baz Luhrmann’s Australia. He’s recently finished work on a new film named Charlie’s Country, by Rolf de Heer, who also directed the East Arnhem Land-based Ten Canoes. Legendary actor David Gulpilil wins the Red Ochre Award.
Get ready to dig Spud
Mark ‘Spud’ Murphy will be in Gove on June 15. FOR those in the market for a giggle or two, better get down to the Golfie on June 15 to dig the comedy stylings of Mark ‘Spud’ Murphy. Spud is about as Aussie as mozzies by the Mary River, but a million times funnier. You might have spotted his cameo in the recent ABC1 telemovie, Cliffy, about a potato farmer-turned marathon runner, which was written by his brother, Dean Murphy. “Blink and you would’ve missed me,” Spud laughed. Similar to Cliffy’s protaginist, Spud grew up in the agricultural life; son of a dairy farmer in North East Victoria, in a small country town called Kergunyah. For those of you who are unsure where that is, Spud said it’s at the foot of Mount Murramurrangbong, over the hill from Yackandandah and just up the road from Tangambalanga. “I come from a bit of a show-biz family. “We used to have a family band, which I played in, and I always dreamed of being a stand-up comic. “When we were kids, my brother would adamantly say, ‘I’m going to be a movie-maker’, and I’d say, ‘I’m going to be a comedian’. “He’s written Paul Hogan’s last three films, and I’m a stand-up on the road!” Back in 2001, Spud entered into a talent comics night and to his surprise won the contest and hasn’t looked back since. Spud’s talent of musical comedy acts, word play sketches, one liners and stories have been said to capture audience’s hearts and give them a cracker of a time. He has regularly performed on the Sydney and Melbourne comedy circuits, but is best known in the towns of regional Australia. And he can’t wait to get to Gove. “I haven’t been up that way for awhile. “I just hope the humidity doesn’t melt me.” The Spud Murphy Comedy Show at the Gove Country Golf Club Clubhouse costs $60 per person, which includes a sumptuous buffet dinner. Tickets are limited, so get in early - contact (8987 3191) and sorry kids, but this one’s for adults only.

keeping life the waY it always was THE two huts built behind Gapuwiyak’s Windmill Camp stood solid in the late morning, as smoke billowed past them from a fresh, big billy of tea. CEA workers busied themselves around these structures, laying finishing touches on a lavish spread - held on May 30, to celebrate the opening of a new cultural concept, of which the two huts played central roles. Community elder Peter Guyula, whose face reads like an ancient parchment - time-worn yet filled with ageless wisdoms - designed the huts to teach younger generations about the old days. “I want to tell them what we old people did, teach them knowledge. “Show them the ways of camping, take them to look for bush tucker.” The huts showcase the practical simplicity of the way Mr Guyula and many members of his generation spent their day-to-day life growing up. Although the huts appeared basic enough, their practical design calculated all the trials and tribulations of the seasons and life outdoors; from mosquito protection, to warmth, to sanctuary from the weather wilds. Mr Guyula said the community was

seeing the ways the old men lived would help keep the younger mob’s culture strong. “We can learn for the future. People have always been living like this, so we can help keep it the same way too.” In an era when hip-hop, footy and technology exist to distract the concentration of the community’s youth away from older culture, the two huts provide a glimpse at how simple and smart Yolngu life has always been. Peter’s son and one of the community’s young leaders, Damien Guyula, spoke of the wisdoms contained in this way of life. “Everything in Yolngu world is free. “The trees are free, the food is free. “You don’t have to buy a lease to live here. “The most-beautiful thing about Yolngu culture is it’s all about sharing.” Damien’s poignant last statement was immediately recognised, when a horde of school-kids teemed in to share a big barbecue lunch, and Yolngu and Ngapaki (non-Indigenous people) alike were treated to the wisdoms of local elders as they told stories about the huts and how life once was. The Chief Minister expresses his sincere condolences to the family of Mr Yunupingu, who died at his home in Eastern Arnhem Land on Sunday night.
Sincere condolences to the family, friends and parishioners of Father Barry on the loss of a wonderful and caring member of our community.
Mr Yunupingu was an outstanding Australian; a musician of international repute; the first Indigenous Australian from Arnhem Land to gain a university degree; a former Australian of the Year; and Australia’s first Aboriginal principal.
A selfless, wise and witty individual, his spiritual and pastoral care role extended well beyond the boundaries of the Sacred Heart Parish to embrace all of us.
Our thoughts at this time are with Mr Yunupingu’s wife and five daughters. Hon Adam Giles MLA Chief Minister Northern Territory
He will be sadly missed, may he rest in peace.

A man of the cloth, no matter of what faith, in the military is called either Padre or Chaplain irrespective of the rank he may wear, more commonly as Padre. Padre Barry Hansen was invited to participate in a RSL commemorative service at the turn of the century. His involvement enhanced our service and, after doing a great job, we sought his attendance at our next service. Upon being approached, he responded “Same as last time, keep it short (aside: Barry’s words were ‘cut the bullshit’) and say the necessary words so the Veterans can get out of the sun”. From that day on we knew we had a Padre who cared. Many years later, as a token of appreciation from the RSL, Padre Barry was presented with a “Slouch Hat complete with a Padre Service Badge” in appreciation of the devotion he provided to our group and to the Veterans he has assisted. Padre Barry, some people leave a big pair of shoes to fill, however, with your devotion and caring for our servicemen, you have left a big hat to fill. Lest we forget.

20 on the ball in shortened NRL round
No change on top THERE was no change in the pecking order after the weekend’s games in the split round of round 12 of the Arafura Times/Arnhem Club NRL footy tipping competition. Only three games were played over the weekend, with Monday night’s game between the Broncos and the Warriors not completed when the Arafura Times went to press, and, of course, nor was the State-of-Origin clash to close the round. Tipsters were on the ball on the weekend after last week’s horrendous results, with

match, but a well-honed Gapuwiyak didn’t let them down. The team was there for the four quarters, and showed off that they’d been training hard since their match at Ski Beach against table-leaders Gopu three weeks ago. Most weeks the team have to travel six hours down and back the track to Gapuwiyak to play, so it was to their testament they could take home a well-earned first win.
20 correctly forecasting all three winners. Marlinman, Kaffir and Andres Hoffman are all on 66 in front. Malkzok1remains in outright second with 65, while doodlecuckernochc and Tanya Hoffman are on 64 and Wayno on 63. 62: Graham Hughes. 61: Shaun Dennis, Jez, Duggie, Luke Cole. 60: Waggy, Halwes, Putty. The winner of the Arafura Times/ Arnhem Club NRL tipping competition wins $500.
Tipsters strike back TIPSTERS were all on the ball in round 10 of the Arafura Times/Arnhem Club AFL footy tipping competition on the weekend. Five correctly tipped all eight weekend winners, with Monday night’s game between the Eagles and the Tigers not completed by the time the Arafura Times went to press. On the ball were Joseph Benn, Dobbo, Crocbait, broccoli and WestAussieGirl136 all with eight from eight. There were 14 with seven correct, with the Bulldogs’ win against Port and the Dockers’ victory against the Crows the major stumbling blocks.
Darren Nunn (7 correct) continues to show the way with 70. The number who were in second place prior to the weekend dropped from five to two, with Forbesy (7) and Pleb (7) now on 69. Hayden4x (6), Duggie (6) and Kaffir (6) are now third on 68, one ahead of Waggy (6), Tanya Hoffman (7) and crackers (7) pm 67. 66: David Gibson, Joseph Benn, WestAussieGirl136. 65: Wayno, Travis Dehnert, Agron. 64: Woodsgal, Dobbo. 63: 43, VanDam. The winner of the Arafura Times/Arnhem Club footy tipping competition wins $750.

Total overhaul for BMX Park THOSE who headed down East Woody Road during the last couple of weeks might have noticed some dramatic changes happening in Nhulunbuy’s BMX Park. Construction works were underway giving the park a complete overhaul, upgrading the BMX tracks.
After the $13,000 plus upgrade, the only original fixtures left in the park are the canteen and the light tower. President of the Nhulunbuy BMX Club Ken Leahy said the new track will help the young riders become more competitive. “The new tracks are just like the ones
they race on in competitions. “We hope it will help gauge more interest in the sport around the community. “After all, these days it’s an Olympic sport.” Mr Leahy said there were plenty of sponsors who chipped in to make
the upgrade possible, including YBE, Pacific Aluminium, Deltareef, JBM, Gove Industrial Supplies and Levai Civil Engineering. The track opened for the first time last Friday night, for kids to have a test run and get to know the track. Racing will start this week on Sunday
afternoon, where the club will also be cooking up and selling their famous BMX Burgers. The club currently has 55 licensed riders, and is always looking for more, especially ladies. All ages are welcome, contact Ken (0429 342 055) or find them on facebook.
