Garma site proposed for memorial

A MEMORIAL to be held for the late singer of Yothu Yindi, Dr M Yunupingu, could take place at the site of the Garma Festival at the end of June. A large meeting of the deceased man’s family was held in Gunyangara (Ski Beach) last Saturday, June 8, to discuss issues such as the proper place and time for such a memorial to be held. The meeting reportedly lasted nearly five hours, and brought in family members from different communities across the region. The Arafura Times understands that the preference relayed by family members in this meeting was that the memorial would be held at Gulkula, the Garma site, 40km from Nhulunbuy, on June 30. The Northern Territory Government last week announced that Dr Yunupingu’s family had accepted its offer of a State Funeral, but this remains up in the air, pending a unanimous family decision. A State Funeral, or State Memorial, would mean the Northern Territory Government would provide some funding for the service, as well as being involved in some of the service protocols, such as giving speeches. The rare gesture of being offered a State Funeral underlines what a powerful and lasting contribution Dr Yunupingu has left on the NT and Australia. MLA for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker said it was right and fitting that the Northern Territory Government have offered the family of Dr M Yunupingu the special privilege of a state service. “The Territory’s first Yolngu principal, lead singer of internationally acclaimed Yothu Yindi, Australian of the Year, a founding member of the Yothu Yindi Foundation; he was a man of many firsts, breaking down barriers which affirmed his talent as well as his passion for his people and a better future,” Ms Walker said (full comment, page 8). It has also been confirmed by sources that the Garma Festival will definitely be going ahead from August 9 to 12, despite recent rumours following Dr Yunpingu’s death that it may be cancelled.

him realise his dreams. Nowadays Malati works as an interpreter at Gove District Hospital, but remembers his days as a part of Yothu Yindi fondly. In the early 1990s, Malati and Yothu Yindi were part of a tour with Midnight Oil where they flew to the United States. Over there the bands took on a hefty touring regime; giving 30 concerts in 30 cities, in 36 days. “Travelling to the USA helped me, us, realise our dream of sharing cultures. “We sent a message to the world about what Aboriginal culture was all about.” Each night Malati hit the stage painted in the traditional way, and danced the dance of the brolga, the kangaroo, and used clap-sticks to keep the beat of the band.

“I will never forget those days. “It’s in my heart until I pass away,” he said. He talked of the beauty of Yothu Yindi’s songs, and the lyrics penned by the recently deceased Dr M. Yunupingu. “His songs made the difference. “They connected with the land, the sea, the sky, the birds and the wind.” Malati said it was important for younger bands, like Yirrkala’s East Journey, to keep going. “Follow our footsteps, and spread the message across.” Events planned for August this year including the National Indigenous Music Awards in Darwin, and the Garma Festival, near Nhulunbuy, will be paying tribute to the music of Yothu Yindi.

15 trapped turtles in 2 weeks << From Page 1 IT’S been “turtle carnage” on the remote beaches of East Arnhem Land over the last weeks, say Dhimurru. In the last fortnight, 15 turtles trapped in discarded fishing nets (ghost-nets) have been found stranded on the beaches of Dhimurru’s Indigenous Protected Areas. Only five of these survived and were able to be released. Dhimurru Project Facilitator Vanessa Drysdale said it was the worst she’d seen in five years. “The worst I’d seen prior to this was one or two trapped turtles over a whole season.” The impending closure of Ghost Nets Australia could have severe implications on the marine life of East Arnhem Land, say officials. The Federal Government recently announced they would be stopping funding to the ghost-net removal organisation, which Ms Drysdale said was vital. “They are pretty much finished. “Now it means we will have to search for other avenues to assist in funding programs like important ghost-net helicopter surveys.” Many of the spots where the ghost-nets wash up are in inaccessible remote locations, making a helicopter the only way to access them. The Federally-funded Ghost Nets Australia worked with Indigenous rangers and has removed more than 12 thousand fishing nets, saving thousands of sea creatures. The program operated in the Northern Territory and Queensland, focused majorly on the Gulf of Carpentaria, and in Western Australia. Ghost Nets project coordinator Riki Gunn said the program’s closure meant many more nets would be left out at sea to endanger and kill marine life. The organisation will lose its Commonwealth funding from the end of June. A spokesman from the federal Department of Environment has said decisions on all applications for funding, including Ghost Nets Australia, were judged on the basis of competitiveness against the criteria, value for money and alignment with the program’s objectives.

Cessna belly flops into Ramingining A PLANE had to make an emergency belly landing in Ramingining last week - about 200km from Nhulunbuy as the crow flies - after a problem with its landing gears. The pilot of the Cessna 210 walked away from the incident unharmed, around 6pm on June 4. He was reportedly the only person on the light plane at the time of the emergency landing, and he was checked out by members of the local health service.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) are now investigating the incident. Ramingining Police said they would not comment further until the ATSB investigations has been completed. Program to pump up Indigenous music industry A GROUND-BREAKING program to develop 16 music industry “rangers” across the Northern Territory will take place in Yirrkala later this year. Charles Darwin University will be holding community-based training to build capacity for a more-robust indigenous music industry. Contemporary Music Lecturer Cain Gilmour said the ranger training was designed to focus on individuals who were already musically adept and who had the passion and drive to carry the music industry forward in their communities. “Each of the trainee rangers will

already be active in a local band and in most cases support the running of workshops, music events or rehearsals in their local area. SOLAR power could become a possible solution to the energy-price problems of East Arnhem Land. Reports that Yolngu people in communities, such as Yirrkala, had been spending upwards of $20 a day on electricity power cards and tokens, has spurred a Sydneybased solar company to begin distributing renewable energy ideas in the region. Company Yhi Solar, together with Lirrwi Yolngu Tourism, has launched a social venture project to distribute an energy-saving device called the Mandarin Ultra Solar Powered Light. This device recharges outside in six to eight hours of daylight in either bright, sunny conditions or overcast days. It has been engineered to withstand arid environments and is weather proof against rain. Chief Executive Officer of Yhi Martyn Dominy said their strategy was bigger than just distributing the light to the Yolngu community. “We want every household in Australia to be using the lights to reduce their carbon footprint and to save money on power costs.” Yhi Solar said they will donate 10 per cent of all net sales back to Lirrwi Tourism to assist in the development of their Indigenous Tourism Masterplan across the Northern Territory. Building economically sustainable tourism businesses for future Yolngu generations is a key direction of the Tourism Masterplan. Mr Dominy said the lights will be distributed across the country to indigenous people in remote and isolated communities, as well as to city dwellers living in low, socio-economic conditions.

MILINGIMBI’S Sebastian Maymayun was one of numerous young men and women from Arnhem Land who attended Mabo Day celebrations in Townsville on Monday, June 3. Mabo Day is a public holiday in Far North Queensland, hailing the achievements made by one of the country’s most-famous land-rights pioneers. Several hundred people converged on the town’s Central Park for the 21st anniversary celebrations of the Mabo native title High Court decision. The undoubted VIP of the morning was Aunty Bonita Mabo, the widow of Edward ‘Koiki’ Mabo. Sebastian stood with Elcho Island

girl Chimika Ganambarr near the monument to Eddie Mabo, and said it meant a lot to him. “He was a great man and what he did helps with our own land rights,” he said. Another Milingimbi youth, Denzel Baker, met with friends Police Liaison Officers Bradley Stout, Aaron Bowman and Ali Anmar. “Denzel is a talented musician and is going to Brisbane soon and will do well,” PLO Bowman said. After the ceremony, the Arnhem Land dancers who board at Townsville’s Shalom College performed for the crowd in the park event. Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said Mabo Day was a celebration of national and international significance.

The Showcase Convention Tour rocked into town for the workshop with Arafura Dance Association members, delving into styles like jazz, musical theatre, tap, hip-hop and lyrical. At the end of the weekend, dancers had a chance to show what they’d learnt to their parents and teachers, at a big dance performance held on Sunday evening. President of Arafura Dance Association Lesley Tankard said it was a great opportunity for the dancers of our remote town to see and learn some of the new contemporary styles that are out there. Gas-to-Gove will not bring ‘green benefits’ IN response to the article, “Green benefits from gas pipeline project, says PacAl”, (Edition 938, May 8). The Environment Centre NT wishes to strongly refute claims by Pacific Aluminium that the proposed Katherine-to-Gove gas pipeline will lead to “green benefits”. The pipeline will essentially lockin dirty fossil fuel power to Gove for decades to come.

The project will also involve large scale clearing of native vegetation through the heart of the world’s largest relatively intact tropical savanna. The current draft EIS proposed by PacAl does not provide a full analysis of options for powering Gove by renewable energy. PacAl should provide to the public a detailed feasibility study of solar and wind resources for the refinery

including a full life cycle approach to costings. By its own admission the company state that the pipeline will drive further investment in gas exploration and infrastructure. This is at a time when the cost of renewable energy technologies are becoming more and more competitive and we should instead be investing in a clean green NT for the future.

There are real opportunities for investing in renewable energy sources for the Gove refinery that Pac Al and the NT Government must properly examine and make available to the public. Only then will there be true green benefits for the Nhulunbuy and wider NT community. Rob Law, Policy Officer, Environment Centre NT.

IT is right and fitting that the Northern Territory Government have offered the family of Dr M Yunupingu the special privilege of a state memorial service to pay tribute to a man who was an outstanding and inspirational leader. The Territory’s first Yolngu principal, lead singer of internationally acclaimed Yothu Yindi, Australian of the Year, a founding member of the Yothu Yindi Foundation; he was a man of many firsts, breaking down barriers which affirmed his talent as well as his passion for his people and a better future. Sincere condolences to Gurruwun and her

daughters, grandchildren and the Yunupingu family on their significant loss, a loss which resonates around Arnhemland, the country and the world. LAST week, the Minister for Regional Development, Alison Anderson, announced the 2013-2020 Indigenous Economic Strategy draft document for consultation. It’s a thin document at just five pages, and is bereft of detail and almost entirely focused on private sector business and employment opportunities, ignoring the fact that the largest employer is the public sector. According to the Minister’s media release: “This

new strategy will increase Indigenous participation in our economy by promoting entrepreneurship, selfreliance and resilience.” It’s difficult to see how exactly this strategy will deliver this bold vision when we see two senior NT Parks and Wildlife ranger positions being withdrawn which provide support and mentoring to Yolngu rangers, along with the recent cessation of the Indigenous economic development officer position in the east Arnhem region. Parliamentary Estimates will be held in Darwin in the next fortnight, where government Ministers are required to appear at public

hearings and members of the Labor Opposition will ask questions about the new government’s plans, expenditure and policy. One of the key questions and underlying themes of Estimates will be how it is that the new CLP Government made so many promises prior to the election and has failed to deliver on just about all of them, not

THE founder and namesake of Eva’s Mini Park and Cantrell’s Skate Park, the colourful Eva Cantrell, has had enough. After more than 10 years of putting her passion into creating something for the region’s youngsters, who she refers to as ‘Eva’s Kids’, Ms Cantrell says it’s time for something new. “It was a magical thing. “Nothing could deaden the feeling I had when I was getting this skate park going; I knew what I had to do - and I did it.” Back in 2002, she worked with Nhulunbuy’s Town Administrator at the time, Mike Hindle, to raise around $200,000 and get the park open. A few years later, she drummed up another $174,000 to open Eva’s Mini Park - featuring ramps and dips to suit littlies under nine years old. Although it’s given her a lot of joy over the years, she says that, at 71 years of age, she is no longer physically able to keep going with it, and it’s time for a new generation to take-over. “I think it’s time now for parents and other community members to step in. “There needs to be a new skate park committee, to organise a roster and hold a few Fun Nights to give something for the children to look forward to.” Ms Cantrell was known for hosting the so-called Fun Nights, every Thursday at the skatepark, which featured food, music and prizes galore. She said she wanted to host one more before she hangs up her boots. “We’ll have one final night before school wraps up for the year, and there will be some excellent prizes.” Long-time Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited worker Ralph Pellenat, who helped to construct the park, said without Ms Cantrell and the fundraising she did, it

A water cooler installed in the park just three months ago has since been vandalised by someone having hit it with a skateboard or bike. Although disappointed with the damages, and the fact that she has not been unable to find somebody to look after the park after she stops, she is still happy with her legacy in the town. “I feel I’ve given everything I could with it, now it’s time for me to sit back and enjoy my life. “This was a gift to my kids, something that will last forever.” She said she wanted to give a big thanks to the organisations and townspeople who have sponsored and supported her over the years.

British survival expert reckons locals are ‘croc crazy’ A FEW years ago, British survival expert and television presenter Ray Mears was camping on a beach just west of Gove. Out here he had an ‘aha’ moment. For a man who made his name helping ordinary Brits reignite their passion for the bush, this was a big ‘aha’. In fact, this crocodilian ‘aha’ was 4m long, flashing his teeth and walking a menacing path just outside his tent. At the time, Mears didn’t think too much of it. But having since returned to Arnhem Land to observe interactions between humans and crocodiles on numerous occasions, he is now convinced that incident was too close. And after his latest visit to the Kakadu region a couple of weeks ago to film a new documentary, Mears is more certain PHOTO: May Nango, Cusack Nango, Mark Djandjomerr, Danny Teece-Johnson from Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation and British television presenter Ray Mears.

than ever some people are taking “crazy risks” at popular fishing spots like Cahill’s Crossing in West Arnhem Land. “The crocs’ speed and power is just such that they could take someone each and every day if they wanted to. “I watched a person wade across the crossing up to their waist, while a 3m crocodile swam close by, and he was completely unaware of it.” It’s this complexity - how humans live alongside dangerous animals like crocodiles - that brought Mears back to Kakadu last month. He is filming a documentary for Britain’s Terrestrial Channel. According to Mears, it’s not sensational or a “let’s be scared by them” show, instead he is “taking the time to get to know the crocodiles’ potential”. “I am actually in Australia filming for two shows. “The first is about Tasmania . . . which is a microcosm of conservation issues that face the world. “It highlights the loss of habitat and the complexity of humans living alongside animals, and unpacking some of the misconceptions Europeans have held about conservation.” Mears’s second documentary - the one filmed partly in Kakadu and Arnhem Land - follows a similar line. “It’s about crocodiles, and what we need to know to be safe around them,” Mears said. “This part of the world is a great place to film this. “You have Aboriginal people who live in very close proximity to crocs, many who have great respect and learn to live alongside them. “I have made three films already in Arnhem Land. “Wherever I go I have been welcomed into the communities around Kakadu and Arnhem Land and I feel very privileged.” Mears latest documentaries are planned to be screened in Britain later in the year, and will hopefully make it to Australia in 2014. Marngrook Footy Show hosts Leila Gurruwiwi and Grant Hansen at Gove FM.

Marngrook is kicking goals against scabies FANS of NITV’s Marngrook Footy Show might have noticed a couple of familiar faces in the community last week. Marngrook hosts Leila Gurruwiwi and Grant Hansen were in town to appear as special guests at Yirrkala’s Healthy Skin Party on June 3 - which unfortunately had to be postponed due to community Sorry Business. The event was to be held in the name of scabies prevention; organisations One Disease at a Time and the Jimmy Little Foundation planned to go to every home in Yirrkala and encourage residents to apply preventative creams, with an afternoon of live music and footy meant to follow. Although the day was postponed, the chipper pair still managed to meet members of the community, and even had a yarn on our local radio station, Gove FM. DJ and Station Manager Michael Stimpson chatted to the pair, who were all for ridding our communities of scabies. “I think it’s a really good initiative, the whole idea of eradicating scabies within indigenous communities, especially Yolngu communities because it’s quite rife,” said Lucy. “I’ve had it before, and it’s not the most amazing feeling on the planet, with the itchiness and whatnot.” The hosts were excited about seeing the football matches that were pegged to be held on the day, although had to miss out for this trip. Although the Marngrook hosts had left already, a more subdued Yirrkala Skin Day was still held, last Tuesday, June 11.

Turtles to transmit ghost-net information

Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation has asked that if anyone finds a stranded turtle or large dumps of ghost-nets in an East Arnhem Land Indigenous Protected Area to record the location and contact them (8939 2700).

This juvenile Olive ridley will assist CDU researchers protect sea turtle populations.

Murray Valley mossies on rise

LOCALS are being urged to protect themselves after numbers of the mosquitoes that can transmit Murray Valley Encephalitis (MVE) increased over the past weeks. Conditions are optimum for the mosquitoes to breed in

freshwater lagoons and wetlands with water drying up but plenty of vegetation still around to protect them from predators. Acting Director of Medical Entomology for NT Nina Kurucz said to avoid mosquito borne disease, residents were urged

to use personal mosquito protection and to avoid outdoor exposure around mosquito prone areas - especially after sundown. Murray Valley Encephalitis is a rare disease, but can potentially be fatal.

A NEW research project is being undertaken to try to protect turtles from the biggest threat they face in East Arnhem Land and beyond - discarded fishing nets, commonly known as ghost-nets. Two turtles fitted with satellite transmitters have been released back into the wild, to assist Charles Darwin University researchers in following migratory patterns and finding information on where nets drift. The turtles, reared by the Territory Wildlife Park after being rescued as hatchlings, were fitted with satellite transmitters and released at the remote Bare Sand Island. CDU researcher Dr Kiki Dethmers said this would be the first time juvenile Olive Ridley and Flatback turtles were monitored simultaneously. “We don’t know much about the juvenile turtles living in northern Australian waters,” Dr Dethmers said. “Tracking two different species will give us valuable information about how the species interact and if their migration and feeding routes overlap.” The project will focus on the Arafura and Timor Seas, and will assess the impact of ghost nets on turtle populations in this region. Dr Dethmers said that, while a lot of good work was being done by Indigenous sea rangers to clear debris from beaches that were vital nesting sites for turtles, more information was needed. “We need to find out more about where the nets enter the system and how they move through North Australian waters before they washed up on shores.” Members of the public can follow the rehabilitated turtles’ progress by visiting the link: http://www.seaturtle. org/tracking/?project_id=802&dyn=1354801813.

The symptoms can include severe headache, high fever, drowsiness, tremor, seizures (especially in young children), and in some cases the disease progresses to delirium, coma, permanent brain damage or death.

STATE-OF-ORIGIN, GOVE BOAT CLUB

ONCE in a blue moon, NSW comes good and wins a State-of-Origin game. Last Wednesday, the Gove Boat Club was filled with diehards there to watch the first in this year’s three-game NRL favourite. A few punches thrown by NSW captain Paul Gallen, and a few nail-biting runs toward the line by Queensland fullback Billy Slater and the crowd was pumped. As one Maroons fan mentioned at the game’s completion, after it had been won by NSW 14-6: “Now we’ve got them right where we want them.” Can Queensland make it eight straight? Their next match is at home at Suncorp Stadium, in Brisbane, on June 26.

NEWS

Meet the creator of an online sensation FORMER journalist and school teacher Amanda Pehi was driving home from the supermarket with her sister one day, complaining about the state of the pin-up noticeboard out the back of Woolies. All the phone numbers and addresses had been ripped from the advertisement posters tacked up there, preventing people from calling to check-out whatever was on offer. The two ladies had a brainwave; to create a new digital, online noticeboard, using Facebook, to help put an end to these technologically outdated problems. So Ms Pehi started up the website, Nhulunbuy

Notice Board - and the rest is history. At time of publication the Noticeboard had 4151 Facebook ‘Likes’ - it has been jettisoning higher by the dozens every week. Since its inception in 2009, administrator of this online sensation Ms Pehi has seen the likes of cat-fights, copycat competitors, police involvement and the hurly-burly of hundreds of Goveites trying to hock their used goods. Ms Pehi recently sat down with the Arafura Times to chat about the online beast she has created and where it’s headed to in the future.

That’s how it all started. So, Amanda, tell us a little bit about your background. I was a journalist a long time ago (laughs). About 10 or 15 years ago, I started off in journalism. I was in the Wide Bay region, around Bundaberg and Gladstone. I was also in Brisbane for awhile, all mainly on radio. All these years later, you’ve created an online sensation. How did it begin? Well, it all started from the noticeboard outside Woolworths. My sister and I used to go to the garage sales every Saturday morning, so we’d go in to town to check the board. And I think some people were kind-of like...they’d want to get to the sales first, so they’d rip the whole tag down, and you wouldn’t be able to see what was there, ‘cause they’d taken the whole post away with them - and then we’d miss out on where the sales were. We thought it was unfair - so we were talking about it in the car, and we said to each other, ‘We should probably start up an online page, so that way everyone can just get it on their phones’. Now everyone knows where the garage sales are, and if anyone wants to sell anything or advertise for fundraisers or whatever, they can do that too. Because at the time, everything like that was advertised on the Woolies noticeboard. So we were just going to turn the Woolies noticeboard into an online noticeboard.

Did you ever imagine how much it would take off? No, I didn’t. I just shared it with my friends at first, then they shared it with their friends, and it was just a small group. But then it just started growing and growing, and yeah. It’s become pretty big actually. I get a lot of phone calls regarding stuff that’s put on there. I’ve had messages from the police to take stuff off there. Just recently I’ve had a mining company in South Australia contact me to advertise for them. So how much of your time does it take up, administering the Notice Board? I keep thinking maybe I should take some other people on board. You can’t always please everybody. Half the people are happy with the way it’s run, then there are a few who are not, and I’m kind of stuck in the middle. So, I don’t know. I don’t spend much time on there, because it’s not my personal page that it’s attached to. I specifically opened that page for the Notice Board. So, I don’t get all notifications. But when people ring me and ask me to remove stuff, I’m on it. Do you ever feel like it’s a bit of a beast that’s out of your control? Sometimes. There are a few cat-fights that

have happened on there, and during the weekend my phone will just be on overload with people ringing me. And we’re all adults here. And I think everybody should act like that sometimes. So sometimes that kind-of gets to me, when people don’t act like adults. You must have seen every kind-of thing posted up there. As you say, there’s been catfights, gossip . . . what do you think is the best thing you’ve seen posted? I’m an animal lover, so I’m glad people advertise lost pets on there. And I’ve seen a lot of that happen, so that’s good. I recently lost my dog; he followed my son to the bus stop. And I was waiting for him for half an hour, and I didn’t even think about the Notice Board. I was sitting outside waiting for my dog to return, then the next thing minute I thought, ‘I should just go inside and check my phone’. So I checked the Notice Board and there it was; someone had found my dog. Do you make much money from the Notice Board, or have your ever thought about it? No, no, I don’t make money. It’s not opened for profit. It’s a community service, it’s there for everyone. Where do you see it evolving to from here? I’m not quite sure. I’ve seen a few people have left

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

A misunderstanding will be resolved easily when both of you are in the right mood. Now is not the best time. Wait for the tension to clear. Romance. Your partner will be much more positive than they have been for some time. Try to take on this same sense of wellbeing.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) The Moon/Neptune Midpoint in your sign may, regrettably, cause you to overreact a little this week. Apologise for any wrongs you are about to do. Romance. You are in a very positive mood and will achieve a great deal, so long as you are not put off by those around you.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd)

FOR KIDS

Don’t allow yourself to be tempted by an offer which you know will cause problems in the future. It’s easier to decline the offer now versus reconciling later. Romance. Make sure that you really think things through. You may be a little rash with your partner at the moment.

CLASSIFIEDS Position Vacant AdministrAtion/ CleriCAl Position Full–time

Taking on the continent’s toughest run IT’S known as the toughest off-road, long-distance race in the Southern Hemisphere - which is one of the things which makes it so appealing to a group of Goveites running it for their fourth time. The North Face 100 is a gruelling 100km and 50km race held annually in the Blue Mountains, in NSW. This year it took place in chilly conditions over May 18 and 19, with a number of Gove runners joining in the action, including husband and wife Vanessa and John Drysdale. Vanessa, who ran the 50km race on the day, said the course was stunning but brutal. “It’s all off-road; we run on fire trails ; there’s a section where you go up 900 stairs. “You cover a lot of spectacular country and scenery; that’s for sure.” Runners must also carry a pack which weighs about 5kg on their backs - filled with water, food portions, safety gear and a headlamp - for the race’s duration. Vanessa finished the race in just under seven hours. John, who raced the 100km, completed the course in 13.5 hours - two hours faster than his time last year. Local Terri Dupe also took part in the race, and she finished the 100km in 15 hours, after running the final two hours on a sprained ankle. “She gets the tough-arse award,” Vanessa said. The runners were involved in a gritty training regime before heading to NSW; in the weeks leading up to the event, Vanessa’s training would peak at about 100km per week; running to and from the airport. She said she sometimes begins her runs at 2.30am, so she can run long-distances and still beat the heat. “We’ve had a few close run-ins with buffaloes, and the dingoes seem to be interested in our dogs, who come for the run.” She said that upon completing the North Face 100, she felt completely empowered. “You feel like you can leap tall buildings; at least, you do after you lie down for a couple of days.” Also, finding camaraderie with fellow runners in isolated stretches of the Blue Mountains race was a highlight, she said. Vanessa also wanted to give thanks to her training buddy Nicole Hovelroud, who she named as a ‘Trojan’ for getting up every morning and doing sprint training, long runs, taking on wild dogs and rarely complaining. She also put out a big thanks to local Scott Davey, who, she said, was an absolutely stunning support crew. “He needs to have his name in lights. “He drove around, supplied coffees, pizza and at the end, scotch.” For those interested in long-distance runs, the 2013 Runners North Half Marathon will be held in Gove on August 10. The 21.1km run featured more than 70 participants last year. For more info, phone Terri (0407 859 660).

A life spent in the service of others, Dr Yunupingu leaves behind a proud and incredible legacy as an educator, musician, and tireless advocate and ambassador for the rights and recognition of Indigenous people. His memory will live on in the hearts and minds of all who were touched by him during his too short time in this world.

the region, as well as works by East Arnhem indigenous artists. Marjo said going through her photos to decide which ones she would exhibit helped her relive her life and experiences from up here in Gove. “It made me realise how much I’d loved it and how many friends I’d made.” The exhibition will run from June 13 to 18.

Tipsters struggle again in NRL round

No change on top TIPSTERS again struggled to follow the fluctuating results in round 13 of the Arafura Times/Arnhem Club NRL footy tipping competition. Seven games were played over the weekend, with Broncos and Raiders clash not completed at the time the Arafura Times went to press. Of the six games played, four correct was the best result and then only seven could manage that - Travis Dehnert, Malkzok1, grimmus8U, broccoli, Halwes, Graham Hughes and Jez.

No one tipped the Tigers’ win against the Panthers, and only Waggy nominated the Saints to down the Knights. Marlinman, who struggled with only three from the six games, clings to his lead with 71. However, many of his challengers also floundered with their tips. Kaffir (3 correct) is on 70, one ahead of Malkzok1 (4), doodlesuckernobagchc (3) and Andres Hoffman (3). 67: Tanya Hoffman (3), Graham Hughes (4). 66: Wayno (3). The winner of the Arafura Times/Arnhem Club NRL tipping competition wins $500.

Broccoli cooking BROCCOLI stood alone as the only tipster to record all five winners in the games played in round 11 of the Arafura Times/Arnhem Club AFL footy tipping competition on the weekend. The biggest hurdle was the Suns’ win against the Kangaroos, with only Broccoli, Noni Dj, VanFam and Damo the only ones to get it right. The Demons-Magpies match was not completed at the time the Arafura Times went to press. The other results went pretty much to plan for tipsters, with 19 recording four wins. Darren Nunn (4 correct) continues to show the way with 74, one ahead of pleb (4).

Tipping Competition

Third are hayden4x (4), Forbesy (3) and Duggie (4) on 72. 71: Waggy (4), Kaffir (3), crackers (4). 70: David Gibson (4), Joseph Benn (4), Tanya Hoffman (3). 69: Wayno (4), WestAussieGirl136 (3), Agron (4), Travis Dehnert (4). 68: Dobbo (4), 67: Woodsgal (3). 66: Renae Forbes (4), Jeremy 4X (4), VanDam (3). 65: Jendj, Andres Hoffman, 43, broccoli, marlinman. EIGHT Pistol members from the Arnhem Gun Club have successfully competed at the IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation) Territory titles in Darwin on May 25-26. Seven of the eight came home with medals or trophies. After the 12 stages, many shooters from other clubs - including interstate competitors - commented on the level of the group and on how much they had all improved in a short space of time. Three were first timers and conducted themselves with both safety and eager competitiveness. The other five had taken part at the Australasian Games and Australian Handgun nationals in Rotorua, New Zealand, earlier this year. All five completed the 24 stages over four days, and came back with renewed enthusiasm - as some stages were very complex. Forest trails, a Jeep, helicopter and a boat floating in a water-filled tank were just some of the props used to

Djerrkura a step closer to New York Touch of magic in Wet Season finals FORMER AFL player and Yirrkala local Nathan Djerrkura has been training in cold Canberra, bringing him a step closer to running the New York marathon with the Indigenous Marathon Project in November. The six male members of Rob de Castella’s Indigenous Marathon Project squad arrived in Canberra in late May for their first training camp. Alongside Mr Djerrkura, athletes Luke McKenzie from Murray Bridge, Tali Tabuai, from Saibai Island, Jack Wilson, from Townsville, Justin Miller, from Katherine, and Colin Sampton, from Yulara, undertook the five day camp. It included a number of training runs in the icy Canberra mornings. The participants also had to start units of their Certificate IV in Health and Leisure. The team took part in a 16km time trial, putting their training and hard work into practice. For many of the men, it was the furthest they have ever run. The men will next come together with the women’s IMP squad to run the Gold Coast half-marathon on Athlete Nathan Djerrkura during a training session at Stromlo July 7. Forest in Canberra.

CONGRATULATIONS to all the touch footy players who took to the field in the Grand Final matches of the Gove Touch Association’s Wet Season competition. In the A-Grade Men’s final, Tigers were up against Melonfarmers. In what was a very close match, Tigers walked away with a 6-4 win, with a number of tries taken by the Kidner Brothers. Deltareef ran away from CTARF with a convincing 10-2 win in the Men’s B-Grade Grand Final. A number of Deltareef’s tries came from Nathan Djerrkura. In the Ladies’ Division this season, the

two Grand Finalist teams had been fighting for top of the ladder. The battle came to a close when Yirrkala Sunrises won against Shut Down in a nail-biting match. Victoria Mastin ran in two tries for Yirrkala Sunrises, and another one was planted by Meagan Morris. The try of the night came after a spectacular run away by Roberta Mununggurrtji, that potentially won them the match. Bec Thomson, Vice-President, Gove Touch Association
